The West Mesa Bone Collector
In February 2009, Christine Ross was walking her dog, Ruca, around a dried-out wash in Albuquerque, NM, when the dog found what appeared to be a human bone. Considering the worst but hoping for the best, Ross snapped a photo and sent it to her sister, a registered nurse. After Ross's sister confirmed that it was, in fact, a human femur, Ross called the Albuquerque Police Department. The gruesome discovery prompted a search of the area, where authorities uncovered the remains of 11 women between the ages of 15 and 32.
The 2009 case, known as the West Mesa murders, was the most horrifying discovery that Albuquerque had witnessed. It took forensic experts almost a year to identify the remains - all Hispanic young women who had gone missing between 2001 and 2005. All but one of the victims had ties to sex work or sex trafficking, unfortunately making them easy targets for a potential serial killer. Estranged from families and relatively unnoticed by the general public, some women hadn't even been reported missing when medical examiners identified their remains.
FBI agents were never able to find the killer, dubbed the “West Mesa Bone Collector.” Many believe he escaped long before Ruca unearthed the first found corpse. Authorities did piece together a timeline to find each young woman's last whereabouts, but their time and cause of death remain a mystery.
Although the profiles of two different men emerged as probable suspects, the killer didn't leave enough evidence at the scene to tie either of them to the murders. Fortunately, however, both men are off the Albuquerque streets. Joseph Blea is serving a life sentence for sexual assault cases, but knew many of the women found in the wash-out and possessed jewelry that might have belonged to the victims. Lorenzo Montoya was killed when an enraged boyfriend found that Montoya had strangled and murdered his girlfriend, who worked as a dancer.

20 Questions for Fic Writers
Tagged by @m-b-w and answered under the cut!
How many works do you have on Ao3?
16 at current count. I've written way more fic in my lifetime, but I've only had this account for a few years and for a handful of those I've been in an off and on creative slump.
2. What's your total Ao3 word count?
347,414
3. What fandoms do you write for?
At the moment, pretty much exclusively 9-1-1, but my previously published fics were for Legally Blonde (the musical) and Girl Meets World. And I have some drafted wips for things like Leverage and Criminal Minds that I'll probably revisit someday if the inspiration strikes.
4. Top 5 fics by kudos?
Looking for my Heart (9-1-1; Buddie)
All the Courage You Have Left (9-1-1; Buddie)
Because Reasons (Legally Blonde; Elle/Emmett)
A Missing Voice (Girl Meets World; Rucas)
The One to Survive (9-1-1; no pairing)
5. Do you respond to comments?
This is a habit I'm trying to build--so up until recently no, but I am getting more consistent about it.
6. What's the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
Right now it's probably The One to Survive, since that one very much leaves things hanging to hopefully be continued at a later date. It's a a 9-1-1 AU that takes place right as Maddie and Chimney are headed back to LA after Maddie completes her treatment and features character death and some tough decisions.
7. What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
Mm...probably Because Reasons. It's a Legally Blonde AU that has Elle and Emmett as rival teachers and is basically a condensed rom-com. Since I typically write things that are more on the angsty side, my endings are often hopeful but not necessarily happy, but this one is definitely a classic roll credits moment.
8. Do you get hate on fics?
Not as of yet, thankfully.
9. Do you write smut?
As a completely inexperienced and uninterested asexual, I am more of a fade-to-black, rejoin the characters in the afterglow kind of author.
10. Do you write crossovers?
I have not, but if the inspiration was right I definitely would.
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?
At one point someone tried to post one of my Girl Meets World fics on Wattpad, a site that I never plan on using. But it got taken down pretty quickly.
12. Have you ever had a fic translated before?
Nope
13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?
I have not
14. What's your all-time favorite ship?
Oof. Idk. I honestly don't know that I have an all-time OTP that I read/write/come back to over and over no matter what. There are lots of pairings that speak to me, but my focus shifts frequently.
15. What's a WIP you want to finish but doubt you will?
Twists and Turns. This was a massive Girl Meets World AU I tried to undertake. I'm not even sure that I want to finish it so much as I'm disappointed with myself that I deleted it in a fit of depression/frustration and never got to the big secret reveal I was going for, but I'm fairly certain I'll never go back to it.
16. What are your writing strengths?
Asking me to compliment myself is very mean but I'm usually pretty happy with my depictions of darker feelings/trauma.
17. What are your writing weaknesses?
Action and endings. And the previously mentioned smut.
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language?
I tend to avoid it since I'm not fluent in anything except for English. I'll usually just imply it.
19. First fandom you wrote for?
Nancy Drew and the Hardy Boys probably. Wanting to continue stories with them is how I discovered fandom and I think I dove in pretty quickly after that.
20. Favorite fic you've ever written?
Of what I have published and finished write now I'm most proud of All the Courage You Have Left (linked above). It's a 9-1-1 lawsuit era fic that takes a turn and an approach to Buck's history that I hadn't seen before, and I really loved exploring how that changed things as I was writing it.
-----
I'm honestly not sure of any folks that I follow/that follow me that are writers who would want to engage in a survey like this so I'm not tagging anyone specifically but instead, if you see this and you want to share feel free to say I tagged you!

Rucas Writer Appreciation Week
The writers of our fandom have been through a lot. Instead of continuing to spread the negativity it’s time to spread the positivity.
So, let us gather as a fandom to support our writers, to remind them that we appreciate that they take time out of their days, their lives to create something for us.
How do I participate?
Reblog/Link to your favorite fanfic authors work and make sure to tag them by “@”-ing their username so it shows up in their notes.
Seriously recommendation lists are always a win!
You can also create fan art/edits, glowing review posts, whatever you feel that you can do to let them know you appreciate their hard work. You will make their day with even a simple “I love this story by *ficwriter* reblog”.
When is this event?
August 14th, 2017 until August 20th, 2017
What’s the schedule?
August 14: One-Shots August 15: Romance August 16: Angst August 17: Under-Rated* August 18: Fluff August 19: Alternate-Universe August 20: Multi-Chapter
*Under-Rated, meaning a fic/writer you believe deserves more attention than they’ve gotten in the fandom at this point.
Why a whole week?
Because one day seems fleeting, and a whole week gives more people a chance to participate, create, and spread the positivity.
What if my favorite author isn’t writing anymore?
They can still be appreciated for their past works, and they should be. So show them some love as well.
I have questions, how can I contact you?
Our ask box is open, anon is not on, we can always respond privately instead of posting an answer.
Remember the purpose of this week is to show your favorite authors how much you appreciate them and the works they’ve created.

Girl Meets Season 5 - Episode 1 – Girl Meets Artemis
Synopsis: What can you expect when you’re finishing high school? For Riley her entire world will turn upside down and picking up the pieces will bring her and her friends closer together.
A/N: Because the first entry in this Season 5 fic just had to be the fluffiest thing in the world! Enjoy!
Episode 1 – Girl Meets Artemis
It had been an eventful first day of school for Riley, well not as crazy as getting Saturday detention like the year before, but still eventful. Except it wasn’t school that was on her mind as she walked home after going to the library to return a book she had borrowed over the summer. What was on her mind was the soft barking sounds of the small puppy in her hands, as it wiggled under her sweater. She hadn’t needed the sweater during the day since it had been a cool 80 degrees outside, because summer never really ends in New York until late October some years. Yet her father had insisted after seeing her shirt that day, short sleeves weren’t a crime to her and it had been a hot day, but the closer she and Lucas got the more paranoid her father became. She wouldn’t be surprised if he made her wear turtlenecks by the end of the week, even though the weather wasn’t going to let up at all.
Cheerleading practice had been short that afternoon, but Lucas had to stay behind for practice leaving her to walk home alone, her sweater tied to her backpack because of her father and the weather making her sweat like crazy. Of course that sweater had come in handy when she had heard the first yipping sound from the puppy. She had only planned on feeding it a bit of her beef jerky, and some water but that’s not how it worked out.
So now her sweater held a small little ball of fur, completely covered in mud, who had been tormented by a couple of middle school students as she was walking home. They had been throwing water balloons at the poor thing before one of the boys had dumped a fist full of mud on the dog. Riley had seen it play out before rushing across the street to save the dog, only to get hit by a water balloon as she rushed off with the dog in her hands. The water on her back had been refreshing, but she didn’t enjoy it at all, she was angry that they had seen fit to torment a small animal.
She wondered how Lucas would have reacted if he had seen what had happened, she knew he loved dogs but he also cared about her and having those boys throw something at her, well she knew that he would have attacked those kids. Texas Lucas was not someone to mess with especially when it came to the girl he loved and small defenseless animals.
As she reached her house she was suddenly reminded of one small problem, and that was the fact that her building didn’t allow animals. She didn’t understand why, especially since most of the other buildings in the area allowed people to have pets but now she held the small bundle and wondered if she would be able to get it pass her parents before they realized what she had with her. Instead of climbing through the front door she went to the ladder and climbed up through the bay window, the puppy nestled in her backpack for the journey, with enough open so that the poor thing could get some air.
Her room lights had been off and she was glad that Maya hadn’t been there waiting for her because Riley wasn’t sure what she would do if Maya had scared her. Once inside she settled the puppy on the corner of her room near her closet and watched the baby as it slept. Riley hadn’t checked to see if it was a boy or girl but it didn’t matter she was in love with the little thing and she wasn’t sure if she would ever want to let it go.
Riley had gone down to the kitchen to get some water and food that she could give the dog and noticed that no one was around, and the lights were off. A note on the door of the fridge told her that her father had to stay behind at school for a meeting and that Auggie had gone with her mother to the café with Ava.
“I could have gone through the front door,” she said to herself.
Instead of dwelling on what could have been, she grabbed everything and went off to her room settling a bowl of water and bite size pieces of turkey next to the makeshift bed. The pup woke up at the smell of food and started chomping down on the food making Riley smile as she watched it take small bites. Once the puppy was done she grabbed the baby, because of course it was her baby now, and took it to the bathroom for a quick bath, using her strawberry shampoo. That’s when she saw that the puppy was completely white, she wasn’t sure on the breed, and she would have to ask Lucas about that but Riley though it was the purest baby she could have ever found, when she was almost done washing the dog she saw that it was a girl which only made her smile even more.
“You’re so cute aren’t you,” Riley cooed at the puppy. “I’m going to call you Artemis, because she was a goddess and so are you, my cute little goddess.”
Riley dried the dog and put some newspaper down in the corner so that if the pup had to go to the bathroom she could do it on the newspaper. Instead Artemis fell asleep on Riley’s sweater and all Riley could do was sit there and watch. After a while she started on her homework until she heard her family coming home. She quickly put her books away and went to meet them so that she wouldn’t be found out.
“Hey Riley guess what?” her brother said rushing towards her. “Ava and I are trying out for the school play this year.”
“We’re going to be married on stage,” Ava said smiling as she twirled her hair around her finger.
“No they’re not,” her mother said as she walked in through the door, Riley rushed over to grab the bags from her mother’s hands.
“What play is it Auggie?” Riley asked curious as to why they were going to let a couple of kids play husband and wife on stage.
“Alice in Wonderland,” Auggie said smiling. “I’m trying out for the Mad Hatter.”
“Ava, who are you trying out for?” Riley said as she walked across the living room.
“I’m going to be Alice and I’m going to marry the Hatter,” Ava said making Riley snort.
“Ava sweetie I told you that’s not how the play goes,” her mother said.
“Fine,” Ava said before walking to the fridge and taking out a fruit and cheese platter and eating the cheese.
Riley could swear that the little girl lived at her house more than she lived in her own, but it didn’t matter as long as her brother was happy. Her mother started on dinner as Riley finished putting away the groceries.
“Riley should we expect Maya or Lucas for dinner today?” her mother asked and at that moment Riley realized that she had never asked. Normally she messaged them the minute she got home but she had forgotten to even go to the café for their traditional study session.
Rushing off Riley went looking for her phone only to open the door to her room to see Maya climbing in through the bay window.
“Riles, why haven’t you answered any of our messages?” Maya said as Farkle followed her into the room Smackle not far behind, followed by Zay and Cassie, and Lucas came in last.
“We’ve been worried sick,” Farkle said as Lucas walked over to where Riley stood.
“Oops,” Riley said shrugging her shoulders. “I sort of forgot.”
“Right, you never forget and we left together,” Cassie said as she sat on Riley’s bed. “By the way, why did we just climb in through the window?”
“I’ve been asking that for years,” Zay said sitting next to Cassie.
Riley couldn’t help but smile every time she saw the pair together, they had grown closer over the summer. Zay helped Cassie babysit her brothers, and they had dinner at each other’s houses twice a week. They had become an adorable couple and she was happy that Zay was happy.
“That doesn’t matter, it’s tradition,” Maya said.
Lucas had stood next to Riley but didn’t do anything because his eyes were trained on the small white ball of fluff on the floor.
“Riley when did you get a dog?” he said which caused everyone to turn to see what he was looking at.
“I kind of… sort of… found him on the way to the café and instead of going to meet you I brought her home with me,” Riley said smiling at everyone.
“Your building doesn’t allow pets,” Farkle said as Riley scooped up Artemis.
“I know but some kids were being mean to her and I couldn’t leave her behind, plus Artemis is mine and I love her.”
“She named it and now it’s going to be bound to her,” Smackle said looking between the dog and Riley.
“This is going to be a problem,” Maya said looking around the room. “Riley, sunshine you can’t keep it.”
“But I want her so much, she’s my baby,” Riley said as Artemis let out a yip. “See she knows it too.”
Riley sat at the bay window next to Maya and played with Artemis’s hair, the group was surprised that Lucas hadn’t said anything but when Riley looked at her boyfriend he was looking at the dog with the sweetest look on his face, so she held out Artemis so he could pet her.
“See Lucas likes her,” she said looking at her friends.
“Lucas falls in love with every animal he sees, the man cannot be trusted,” Zay said so Riley held Artemis out to him. It took him less than ten seconds before his eyes began to glow. “Apparently I can’t be trusted either.”
“An animal cannot have that much power over a person, it’s scientifically impossible,” Smackle said so of course Riley turned the full force of the puppy on her. “Apparently science can be proven wrong… honeybuckets I want one.”
Riley watched as Farkle pulled his girlfriend away from the puppy smiling as she tried to gain control of her senses.
“Riley, it’s time for dinner,” she heard her father say two seconds before the door swung open. “What is that… that thing in your hands?”
“Well…” she said before Auggie and Ava burst into the room and zeroed in on the ball of fur in her hands.
“Oh my god,” her brother squealed before launching himself towards Artemis. “Can we keep it?”
“No, no no no no,” her father said before screaming, “Topanga.”
It took her mother five seconds before she walked in through Riley’s bedroom door and see what was happening. Her mother’s eyes zeroed in on the puppy before she walked over and picked up Artemis out of Riley’s hands. That’s all it took before her mother started cooing at the puppy and petting her hair.
“Topanga,” her father said. “The lease says.”
“No it doesn’t, I didn’t tell you earlier but the owners sold the building, I got the letter this morning, and the new owner doesn’t care about pets,” her mother said as her lawyer mode came out. “I double checked the lease agreement to make sure that they weren’t going to raise the rent above a fair value, but since it was just finalized two weeks ago I was thinking of surprising you all with a puppy… Riley just beat me to it apparently.”
“Where was I when all of this was happening?” her father said looking around the room. “And when did we gain so many kids?”
“The kids have been here for years… well except Cassie but she’s ours now,” her mother said as she made kissy noises at Artemis. “And I tried to tell you about the lease, but Shawn showed up and you rushed over and hugged him even though he lives nearby with Maya and Katy, but somehow it’s useless to try and tell you anything when he’s around.”
“So wait does that mean we can keep Artemis?” Riley said looking at her mother smiling.
“Yes Riley we can, and nice name, it reminds me of when I was your age,” her mother said smiling. “But you can’t take her with you to college, and you have to walk her every day.”
“Can I help too,” Auggie said jumping up and down.
“Yes Auggie you can, this is going to be our family pet, so it’s up to you and your sister to take good care of her,” her mother said.
Riley watched her father looking around the room murmuring something about kids, and his wife and how he has no control over anything. Until he zeroed in on Lucas. “You.”
“Daddy Lucas didn’t even do anything,” Riley said rolling her eyes.
“No everything is because of him, he wants to be a veterinarian so of course there’s a dog in our house, he smiles and you melt, he’s the cause of all of my problems.”
“Oh boy here we go,” Maya said smiling before jumping onto the Bay Window. “Matthews versus Friar, round 105.”
“No daddy,” Riley said before her father launched himself towards Lucas who was already out the window. Her father grabbed Lucas’s shoe and yanked it off, but Riley grabbed the shoe and glared at her father before handing the shoe back to Lucas.
“Thanks Riley,” he said before he quickly kissed her on the lips and ran off.
“Friar,” her father yelled but since Lucas was on the baseball team, and the basketball team, he was already down the ladder before her father could even attempt to climb out the window.
The rest of her friends laughed as they watched but Riley was just tired and she wanted her baby Artemis.
See you tomorrow, Lucas send in a message with a small purple heart at the end.
That night Artemis slept in Riley’s room, and alternated between her and Auggie’s room throughout the week. Riley was happy because they had a puppy, but also because their family had gotten a little bit bigger.

okay i ignore 99% of you guys but since i have a half hour to kill before leaving the house, i want to make sure i get this right.
l/eyton is archie and betty, right?
and b/rucas is jughead and betty, right?
okay.
l/eyton is also lucas and peyton.
and b/rucas is lucas and brooke.
so the real question is: since we know you're just using who was "endgame" in these scenarios, how on earth do y'all reconcile that lucas is both archie and jughead depending on who you need him to be?
so, let me get this straight:
lucas is archie because he's the main character but he's also jughead because one of his relationships fails? or are you going with lucas being betty in this scenario and peyton is archie and brooke is jughead?
because i have to tell you, that still makes no sense.
is it because it's a sort of love triangle in a teen show where the main dates one girl off and on for a couple of seasons? because again, still doesn't fit our rvd counterparts.
and even if you're going as the girls are the boys deal, where's veronica? you can't ignore her just because she's inconvenient to you. and if you're saying veronica is brooke then, again, why are jughead and archie the same character to you?
sure, you can say that it's wrong person/right time or whatever but you're still comparing two very different things without giving me the narrative reason as to why you believe that outside of "b/rucas doesn't end up together." because i can turn around and say that about all the post time jump relationships for our rvd characters.
but also, if you're going to compare characters based on...whatever, then i get to say that lucas, the brooding, sort of loner author who, at the start of the show, is crushing on the girl he ends up with in the end fits jughead better than either archie or betty without explanation and you should just accept it because i said so, right? or does that only apply when you're in my inbox?
i'm not making that comparison though because these characters are not some random inserts for other characters to make yourself feel better about your ship being shafted for years on the show you're currently watching.
#anti b*rchie#listen#it's not even that they compare them#it's that they do it so surface level based on who ends up together#like#at least give me an archetype#or trope#it's not even that hard#but you can't forget veronica#and you can't stuff her into some random side character either#wait until they find out if pressed i'd say brooke is more like cheryl#than any of the core 4#and yes#i have my narrative opinion on why

West Mesa Murders: Theories differ on the identity of the West Mesa Bone Collector, or if he even exists
On Feb. 2, 2009, Christine Ross was walking her dog Ruca in a suburban housing development on Albuquerque’s West Mesa when they found a bone. Realizing it was a human femur, Ross contacted the police. As they investigated the area where the body was buried, authorities uncovered the remains of 11 women and one unborn child.
The women had gone missing between 2001 and 2005 and were similar — most of them were sex workers, most of them were Hispanic, and all of them were murdered. Authorities believe that a serial killer was responsible for the deaths, but in the almost 12 years since the crime became known, no suspects have ever been named.
The Albuquerque Police Department considers the West Mesa murders an active investigation, but as time goes on, it seems less and less likely that the city will ever learn who killed the women — or whether they are the only bodies buried on the mesa.
BONES ON THE MESA
In 2005, Albuquerque police detective Ida Lopez compiled a list of missing women after noticing that an inordinate number of women with ties to drugs and prostitution had vanished off of the city’s streets. Four years later, ten of them — Jamie Barela, 15; Monica Candelaria, 22; Victoria Chavez, 26; Virginia Cloven, 24; Cinnamon Elks, 32; Doreen Marquez, 24; Julie Nieto, 24; Veronica Romero, 28; Evelyn Salazar, 27; and Michelle Valdez, 22, who was four months pregnant when she was killed — were found buried on the mesa. The other one, Syllania Edwards, was 15 and had run away from her foster home in Lawton, Oklahoma.
The area where the bodies were found had been barren, empty land before housing developments began to encroach on it in 2006. The 2008 Housing Bubble collapse, however, halted that development before it reached the burial site. Before it ceased, the development had covered an existing arroyo, and complaints of flooding from nearby residents led the developer, KB Homes, to build a retaining wall to channel rainwater into a retention pond. This construction inadvertently uncovered the bone found on Feb 2.
The resulting criminal investigation, which uncovered the bodies of the 11 women over a two month period, was the largest in the history of New Mexico. It took almost a year to identify all of the victims, and the bones did not reveal how they were killed, though authorities have said they suspect strangulation. The fact that the bodies were found in a group led investigators to believe they were killed by one person — a serial killer who has come to be known as the West Mesa Bone Collector.
The investigation, at least publicly, was unable to establish any major connections between the women.
“We know that some of these women definitely would have known each other just by virtue of where they were,” said Tierna Unruh-Enos, an Albuquerque-based journalist who started “The Mesa,” a podcast delving into details of the murders, this year. “Albuquerque is not that big of a city. There have definitely been some more interesting connections that have come out in terms of like family members somehow knowing each other randomly, children of the women being in dance classes together, even though that wasn’t necessarily a factor either.”
Very little, if any, evidence was uncovered pointing toward the identity of the person who killed the women. As a result, the police have never named anyone as a suspect in the case, which remains active. They have, however, mentioned two individuals as persons of interest. (The distinction is important: A “suspect” is someone the police believe committed a crime; a “person of interest” may or may not be involved or have information about a crime.)
On Dec. 19, 2006, 19-year-old Shericka Hill met Lorenzo Montoya, 39, in a chat room and agreed to meet in person. During the meeting, police told the Albuquerque Journal, Hill and Montoya arranged for Hill to come to his mobile home — a few miles away from where the West Mesa victims would be found three years later — to perform a dance for him. Hill’s boyfriend, Frederick Williams, drove her to Montoya’s house and remained in the car while Hill went inside.
After waiting an hour, Williams grew concerned and went to check on Hill, bringing his gun with him. He encountered Montoya outside the home and Montoya brandished a gun. Feeling threatened, Williams shot him dead.
Williams found Hill dead inside the residence, bound with duct tape and strangled. It appeared that Montoya was transporting her body to his car.
“You don’t see this type of violent act committed the way it was,” Albuquerque Police Chief Ray Schultz said at the time. “It seemed like he knew what he was doing. It was very well planned and orchestrated, and that is what is worrisome about this.”
According to court records, Montoya had previously been arrested in 1999 under suspicion of sexually assaulting a 23-year-old prostitute, who told police Montoya had put his hands around her throat and choked her before he was caught by detectives. The case was later dismissed in metropolitan Court and never refiled. Montoya had also been arrested on suspicion of patronizing prostitutes in 1998 and 2005.
As Unruh-Enos points out, the fact that he killed one sex worker and may have tried to strangle another does not necessarily mean he killed others. No evidence connects him to the West Mesa killings. But notably, all of the West Mesa victims were killed before Montoya’s death.
JOSEPH BLEA
Within a week of the discovery of the first bone on the West Mesa, April Gillen contacted the police and suggested that they look into her ex-husband Joseph Blea. The man already had a significant history with the APD.
According to a search warrant affidavit, between 1990 and 2009, police had run across him over 130 times, usually in the area the West Mesa victims were said to have frequented — the East Central corridor. He was charged with the rape of a 14-year-old he knew, but that case was dropped. And his DNA was found on a prostitute left dead on the side of a street in 1985, though he was never charged for that crime.
After the discovery of the West Mesa Murders, police tailed Blea’s car for four days as he drove back and forth along Central Avenue. Police wrote that he appeared to be stalking prostitutes but never approached them. When police searched his home in late 2009, they found women’s jewelry and underwear. His wife, Cheryl Blea, told police that she and her daughter had found articles of both that didn’t belong to them around their home.
Years later, Robert Cloven, the father of West Mesa victim Virginia Cloven, told the Journal that families of the victims had noticed that the women’s jewelry was missing.
The only piece of evidence that the APD says may connect to him the murders, however, is a plant tag for a Spearmint juniper that was found near Virginia Cloven’s buried remains. The tag was traced to a nursery in California that provided plants for others in Albuquerque. Blea’s business records as a landscaper showed that he bought plants from those nurseries.
The case for charging Blea as the West Mesa Bone Collector never materialized, but evidence of other crimes did.
A rape kit collected in 1988 after a 13-year-old eighth-grader was assaulted near McKinley Middle School was tested in 2010 and led investigators to Blea. He was convicted for the crime in 2015. He then pled no contest when charged with the rapes of two women and another child that occurred between 1990 and 1993.
Blea, who is now 63, is currently serving a 90-year prison sentence. He has repeatedly denied any involvement in the West Mesa Murders, and he has never been charged with killing anyone.
OTHER THEORIES
It’s far from the most popular theory, but some believe that there is no individual West Mesa Bone Collector.
Thomas Grover is currently a lawyer in Albuquerque, but from January 2004 through December 2011, he was an officer with the APD, with the rank of sergeant when he resigned. These days he spends a lot of time representing officers throughout New Mexico in administrative matters and bringing whistle-blower actions against law enforcement agencies.
To him, the inability of the Albuquerque Police Department to find a suspect in the killings is emblematic of the disorder within the department.
“The best way to describe it is like a giant family domestic relations dispute where you’ve got some alliances working together, you’ve got antagonisms between others,” he said. “Ranks within the department personnel, cliques within the department, even units or divisions, have this acrimony, and from that, you don’t get the best application to whatever issues are going on that the community needs addressed, whether it’s large scale crimes, criminal events, ongoing patterns of criminal activity — criminal rapes for instance.”
He describes a department in which many of the best officers have departed over recent years, and supervisors with little experience and a relatively weak knowledge base are running the show. As a result, the APD has gotten increasingly less efficient and effective. Grover said that when he left the department, he thought it was going off the rails by not recognizing the concerns of citizens about the use of force and the escalating number of officer-involved shootings. That trend eventually brought the Department of Justice in to investigate the APD, which he said further reduced the police department’s efficiency.
As for why he doubts a West Mesa serial killer exists, he points to the fact that there was not a search for one prior to when the victims were found. Though Grover was never involved in the investigations, he knew people who were and confirms that there was a perception that prostitutes were disappearing — something that officers like Ida Lopez were concerned about at the time. But patterns of behavior surrounding the disappearances never suggested that they were directly related or that one person was behind them.
Grover compares this to the efforts to capture a serial robber who stole from Albuquerque businesses in the early 2000s by disassembling safes after hours. He said that even beyond the burglary unit, there was a massive effort among street-level officers to know what to look for that might indicate a robbery was being committed by this individual rather than a common thief. The burglar was never caught, but the search nevertheless illustrates to Grover that even a department in chaos was able to devote resources to catching a serial offender when they thought one existed — something that was never done in relation to the vanishing sex workers.
“Whenever there was a notion that there was an adversarial type entity out there, whether it was the burglar, or some sort of gangs, or something that really attracted a lot of attention among folks in the department ... just sort of the notion that there was a true bad guy out there — this is why a lot of people become cops,” he said. “You don’t necessarily want to go after the guys that are just committing crimes to fund drug habits. I mean, we’re talking about someone who’s a true antisocial adversary. And when those types of investigations were going on, everyone would sort of hear about it. And even if — and I don’t think this would be the case — but even if you’re talking about someone who preyed on the most vulnerable ... spectrum of society, sex workers, I don’t think that would take away from anyone’s interest.”
Why were the West Mesa victims all found in the same general area? That’s just where bodies ended up in Albuquerque, regardless of the crime.
That’s sort of the history of the West Side and the unincorporated abandoned area,” Grover said. “Detritus would just get left out there.”
ONGOING INVESTIGATIONS
The West Mesa Murders have never been designated a cold case by the Albuquerque Police Department, allegedly because the team investigating them, the 118th Street Task Force, consistently gets new tips about the killings. This also has the obfuscating effect of the department sharing few details about the investigation with the media and public, citing that doing so would interfere with the case.
This is part of the reason Tierna Unruh-Enos started her podcast. Now the managing editor and associate publisher of The Paper, Albuquerque’s new alternative weekly news publication, she was a journalist at local ABC affiliate KOAT when the bodies were found. She said the media covered the investigation extensively for about a year as it got national and international attention. But then interest died off and now it only really gets dusted off about once a year for anniversary stories.
“Watching this whole thing for the past 11 years, I just thought, there is a different way to tell the story,” she said. “I don’t want to just keep rehashing the same details over and over and over again that just don’t really take anyone anywhere. I want to talk to the families — a lot of these women had children, and those children are now adults or teenagers. And, you know, let’s talk to them and further the story than what was really being done with it.”
She is also seeking to humanize the victims.
“They were not just women who were on the street. They were not just women who were possibly a victim of their lifestyle — although that still hasn’t been proven. They were mothers, they were daughters. And this is a legacy that their children now have to deal with. And I think there’s a lot of people out there who don’t really have a lot of sympathy and kind of just want to move on and put in the past,” she said.
The majority of the women on Ida Lopez’s list of missing sex workers were identified as victims in the West Mesa Murders. But six were not. Felipa Gonzales, Nina Herron, Leah Peebles, Darlene Trujillo, Anna Vigil, and Shawntell Waites were all in their 20s when they disappeared between 2001 and 2005. They would all now be in their 30s or early 40s.
Since 2009, the West Mesa, which was previously open space, has exploded in development. A memorial park was built over the acre where the bodies were found, but the other 95 acres of that lot have gone undeveloped. Unruh-Enos believes it’s only a matter of time, though, before KB Homes finally develops that area as well. Perhaps at that time, more bodies will be found — assuming they’re not already under existing houses.
According to the city of Albuquerque’s website, a reward of up to $100,000 is still being offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for the murders. The 118th Street Task Force can be reached at 1 (877) 765-8273 or (505) 768-2450.

BLCD Review: Alpha ga Alpha o Dakeru Houhou
Title: α ga α o Dakeru Houhou (αがαを抱く方法)
Release Date: 2020/01/22
Author/Artist: Tokishiba
Cast:
Eguchi Takuya x Kumagai Kentarou
Yamashita Seiichirou
Tsuchida Reiou
Synopsis: “Alpha” is a high-ranking official host club which only gathers alphas and specialises in leading gay partners. The no.1 host, Ruca, and his cheeky underling, the no.2 Leo, should be pairing up together with a regular, but––…?!
Review Proper
Why didn’t Fifth Avenue just adapt Yagi to Ookami instead? 😂 I mean, what did I even expect? I believe that this has the most bullshit excuses to make their characters have sex out of all of Tokishiba’s other works. This is definitely “much ado about nothing” no. 2 after Hello Morning Star, but instead of drama, it’s sex. 😂 I just find it so funny that all the characters looks so serious and intense when the plot couldn’t be more trash the opposite. Yagi to Ookami and DoS are better written than this, but this had the best art considering that it’s Tokishiba’s latest. Really does remind me of the JAVs my rich nerd classmates made me translate back in the day that had good-looking actors yet trash plot. 😂 I wonder if Tokishiba ever thought of becoming a porn director?
Anyway, enough with the plot.
I’m sorry, but the people who have cast Eguchi Takuya as an uke needs to get their ears checked. This man is a natural seme what the fuck? Egu used a slightly lighter pitch here as compared to Kaburagi in Shinkon-san, but when he grunts during the mattress mambos here in AxA, he goes even lower!
I don’t think I would’ve pulled through this BLCD if it wasn’t for Eguchi Takuya’s acting.
Kumagai Kentarou, on the other hand, visibly struggled here. I’m not sure why, but you can really hear the strain in his voice as he lowers it. Luca does have a slightly lower pitch than his natural one, but his performance as Sosuke in Kimi to Boku no Sekai was also low (maybe even lower), but he did fine in that. 🤷 That aside, I’m just confused as to who Kumagai Kentarou really is! Eguchi Takuya was already sounding like a better Furukawa Makoto as Leo, and now we have Kumagai Kentarou sounding like Shingaki Tarusuke/Okitsu here, too! WHAT THE HECK?! But the dynamics of Luca and Leo’s relationship is somewhat similar to that of Ryou and Riku’s, so that may have also contributed to the similarity in tone. So far, I’ve heard Kumagai Kentarou sound like Ono Yuuki, Maeno, and Satou Takuya—what a scary, scary, man. 😂 I’ve listened to Kurowashi where he bottomed, and now he’s a bottom again, but the next BLCD I’m going to listen to this is Goriyou where he’ll top Okitsu! I really suck at making lists. 😂
As for our side VAs, they did well in their respective roles, too. I laughed way too hard on the Cast Talk when Reiou asked Eguchi why he and Kentarou were always making wet noises and Eguchi said: “Well, he’d get hurt if I just thrust it in, right???”. 💀💀💀
My personal feelings on Tokishiba works aside, this BLCD did have fairly decent voice work. It also followed the manga closely—they even adapted the little epilogues of each chapter. I was wondering why the manga only had three and a half chapters, and it turned out that it’s still ongoing, so there’s a high chance that the second volume will also be adapted into a BLCD like DoS Obake’s. If you’re a fan of the series, I would definitely recommend listening to this. 👍

Rucas Fic Week 2017 // Day 3
title: we tear ourselves apart, just to feel something again pairing: riley matthews / lucas friar word count: 2,100+ rating: 13+ for: day 3 of rucas fic week 2017 (all fics tagged here) author’s note: day 3 is ‘one exception au’ and I went with; what if lucas got hurt while riding the bull in texas? // I just want to say this fic was extremely hard for me to write, for many reasons. Guilt is one of those emotions I think Riley struggles with the most. She feels it way more than any of the other characters in the gmw-verse and writing her in this was extremely heartbreaking. I struggled with this piece, but it finally came together and I hope you all enjoy it, even if it’s sad. special shout outs to: @friarlucas & @rileysmatthews for putting this fic week together and being very supportive readers I really appreciate it!!! // and ofc @ginsharry for being like a sort of cheerleader for me while writing this and reading it over for me--it was a difficult piece for me to write, so thank you!
PREVIEW:
She remembers the beeping the most.
Not because of how annoying it sounded, or how rhythmic it was to her ears. No, the incessant noise was the only reminder of the life the beautiful boy before her clung to. The same beautiful boy she let her heart cling to.
Flashbacks of the events prior run through her head like a broken record. She watches him fall and fall, over and over again in the containment of her mind. And she can’t make it stop, can’t make herself forget.
And all she feels is guilt.

Hi. I’ve been a reader of your Rucas fics from the beginning and I just wanted to say thank you. You honestly have no idea how much reading your stories has helped me. I was going through a really dark period when I read Pas de Deux for the first time and it gave me something to look forward to and the more stories you created the more I fell in love with your writing. You quickly became my favorite author so I just wanted to say thank you for creating and giving me a world to escape to.
I’m sorry that you were going through a dark time. I hope things are better now.
I can def relate about the escaping thing, because that was one reason I started writing in the first place.
Tbh, this ask absolutely, positively means EVERYTHING to me, anon. I’m so insanely grateful that you sent me this. I’m so glad you enjoyed my fics.
Thank you for reading them and for the support. It seriously means more than you’ll ever know

Can nurse practitioners increase access to care in rural areas?
According to a recent paper by Young, Gruca and Nelson (2020), the answer is ‘yes’.
The authors use data from the Iowa Health Professions Inventory (IHPI) to measure the number of professionals in a given area, data from the US Census’ American Community Survey (ACS) to measure the number of individuals in a given area. Census minor civil division (MCD) were assigned one of a 10-level urban-rural continuum using rural‐urban commuting areas (RUCA) definitions. They assumed that physician assistants/nurse practitioners were 11.4% less productive than primary care physicians.
Using these data, the authors apply the following optimization model:
The allocation procedure starts with population demand points located at MCD centroids. One MCD is selected at random and its population is allocated to the nearest provider until the capacity of that provider is reached or the entire population is allocated. Any unallocated population can be apportioned to the next nearest provider within the maximum travel time threshold of 30 minutes. Once demand has been allocated or all available capacity within the maximum travel time threshold has been exhausted, another MCD is selected at random and the process repeats until no further allocation can occur.
This approach is repeated multiple times with the order in which the MCDs are selected done at random. The models were run two ways: the first just with primary care physicians counting as potential providers, and then second including physicians as well as physician assistants and nurse practitioners as potential providers in the primary care setting.
Using this approach, the authors find the following:
Considering only primary care physicians, the average unallocated population for primary care was 222 109 (7 percent of Iowa’s population). Most of the unallocated population (86 percent) was in rural areas with low population density (< 50/square mile). The addition of NPPs to the primary care workforce reduced unallocated population by 65 percent to 78 252 (2.5 percent of Iowa’s population). Despite the majority of NPPs being located in urban areas, most of the improvement in spatial accessibility (78 percent) is associated with sparsely populated rural areas.
While this paper may be of academic interest, the question of interest may be much more relevant if there is a surge in demand due to COVID-19.

5, GMW 16 and 20
5. Has fandom ever ruined a pairing for you? I don’t think so...? I think it’s amplified feelings I already have, but I don’t think it’s ever completely changed my mind or anything.
16. If you could change anything in the show, what would you change? (GMW) I would have shifted the classroom focus from Cory’s class to Harper’s. This would have allowed Cory to function solely as a parent to Riley, and she would be able to look at his advice as that of a parent (rather than as a parent/teacher amalgamation which most certainly lent certain pieces of advice that should have been taken with a grain of salt a whole different level of authority...) At the same time, with Harper being an English teacher, the lessons wouldn’t feel so shoehorned and forced because (as we saw in New Years in their random school vacation classes) their are books that do have relevant parallel situations to most life conundrums. And they wouldn’t be drifting from a proscribed curriculum.
Also, Harper was awesome and we deserved more episodes with her and to see her forming mentor-ships with her students.
20. What is the purest ship in the fandom?(GMW) I mean, I’ll admit my bias here but I have to say Rucas. They built their relationship on communication and mutual respect/adoration and moved forward as was appropriate for them.
