Plant of the Day
Monday 10 February 2025
The cultivar Rubus 'Glencoe' (raspberry) was bred at the Scottish Crop Research Institute to have fruits that are a very deep purple. This is a tall-growing thornless raspberry and one plant will form a multi-stemmed clump. It is a floricane (summer bearing) variety which flowers quite early producing its harvest in midsummer on canes produced in the previous year. Here the beautiful red canes have been pruned and tied in readiness for the coming season.

A quick video I made to show the difference between the two invasive and one native blackberry species in the Pacific Northwest. All three have edible berries and leaves and grow abundantly west of the Cascades. (Plus every berry you eat of the invasive species is one less load of seeds getting deposited with fertilizer by a bird later on!)

#2657 - Rubus schmidelioides - White-leaved Lawyer
Tumblr media Tumblr media
AKA bush lawyer (possibly because after it has its hooks in you it won't let go?) and  tātarāmoa which refers to the feet of the rooster.
A climbing Rubus species endemic to New Zealand, mostly in the Canterbury region of the South Island.
The hooked branches allow it to climb across the ground and into shrubs and trees, and the fruit is an important food supply for birds, as well as being collected for cordials, eaten raw, and used as medicine.

Plant of the Day
Thursday 7 November 2024
The silvery foliage of the deciduous shrub Rubus thibetanus (ghost bramble) looked great with the late flowers of Verbena bonariensis (purple top, Argentinian vervain, South American vervain) emerging from the thicket of purplish prickly stems heavily bloomed white in winter.

Bramen, pracht of plaag
