Kirsten Dunst and Daniel BrĂŒhl will join a now-confirmed Keanu Reeves to power the A-list cast of double Palme d’Or-winning filmmaker Ruben Östlund’s next feature The Entertainment System Is Down.
The film is set on a long-haul flight where the entertainment system fails and passengers are forced to face the horror of being bored. Filming is scheduled to kick off in early 2025.
The film, Östlund’s seventh and his second in the English language following Triangle Of Sadness. It reteams the director with Erik Hemmendorff of Plattform Produktion and Philippe Bober at Coproduction Office. The latter is also handling international sales.
Östlund said his inspiration for the film was a Virginia University study that found participants did not enjoy spending time in a room by themselves with nothing to do but think and many preferred a painful electric shock to boredom.

Was rewatching this earlier tonight. It’s such an ace film.
[SPOILER ALERT, IF YOU HAVEN’T SEEN THIS MOVIE BEFORE.]
I think it’s strength lies in its being totally different from other movies. It does have something of a plot. In that, Claes Bang’s character has his wallet and phone stolen off him at the start. And the rest of the film is loosely based on him trying to recover his items. And – that’s the point – because that loose base allows lots of other wacky stories to drift in and out of the narrative.
(Also – when I first watched it, I didn’t see the theft at the start: even though it happens right before you. The two characters who pretend to be in trouble and they’re yelling. You don’t notice that the girl nicks the phone and wallet out of his pockets from behind. I only saw it on the second time of watching.)
And the wacky stories fill in the rest. It’s quite a long film. Two and a half hours. And it’s often hard to keep such a long movie entertaining. But it never gets dull.
I suppose you could argue that it’s trying to make points about class divisions in society. But, umm, the film is a comedy.
That bit where Claes Bang goes back to Elizabeth’s Moss house after the party. And whilst he’s waiting on her bed, an ape walks into the living room. He just stares at it. And she never explains why she has a pet ape in her flat. And then they have sex. I’ve never really been a fan of sex scenes in films: as they often seem a bit tacky and needless. But this one is just funny. How they argue over the condom after he’s finished with it, and he doesn’t want to give it to her.
But there are moments of sharp drama as well. When he goes into the flat block to post the letters – and the lights are flickering overhead.
And the famous bit with the man in the museum pretending to be an animal. That’s a mix of drama and comedy, and, the scene is dragged out for so long that you don’t really have a clue what’s happening – as Ruben Ostlund is very good at doing.
Ace film indeed.

In a video for Vanity Fair, Ruben Östlund confirms that Yaya, played perfectly by Charlbi Dean, notices the check as it's placed on the table. It was clear that she is in control and, with the entire restaurant open behind her, has room to navigate what happens while Carl, an equally excellent Harris Dickinson, literally has his back against the wall but I never noticed she'd glanced at the check.
Despite what the film wants to say about power and gender roles and beauty and work and wealth and shit and vomit, it actually matters very little, or dilutes what it manages to get across, if she did. It would've been more fun if Östlund had left us to argue as we left the cinema or fought to rewind and pause this scene as soon as the film ends.
