It is early October 2023. You go to the mailbox and see a package you’ve waited far too long for. After two delays and 2+ weeks of shipping, it’s finally here. Good Smile Company’s Nendoroid Kobeni Higashiyama from the hit manga/anime, Chainsaw Man. The package is slightly damp. You pay this no mind. It rained earlier that day. Like a goblin pilfering a trinket, you snatch the parcel and scurry inside. You lay the box on the table and gently slice through the packing tape with your trusty xacto knife, before parting the cardboard. It smells like a gym. You pay this no heed, as you are excited to display your favorite character from the hit manga/anime Chainsaw Man on your shelf. You take the Nendoroid box and open the top. Another hit of the gym smell. Curious. You slide out the plastic tray containing the figure, and remove the top half. There are sheets of paper wedged between certain parts of the figure to prevent paint transfer. You delicately remove them. They feel sodden, like the paper that lined the basket of greasy chicken fingers you bought at the carnival that one time. The ones you regretted on that summer evening as you fought for your life on the porcelain throne. You’re getting distracted - back to the task at hand. Nendoroid #2014: Kobeni Higashiyama lays before you, ready to be posed and displayed on your shelf. You gingerly grab the figure. It is damp to the touch. You did not expect this. You shudder in surprise, and the unexpected pressure of this motion makes the lubricated Nendoroid slide out of your hands like one of those rubber water tube toys from the aquarium gift shop. Y’know, the ones people always joke about sticking your dick in. You watch in slow motion as Kobeni flies out of your hands and sails across the room. Sweat beads on her plastic forehead, and not just the sweat printed on by the manufacturer. She looks as if she may cry at any moment. Thunk. She hits the wall, and lands on your bed. You check the figure. No paint scuffs. Good. You check the drywall. Was that water stain always there? No matter. You swap parts to put the Nendoroid into your favorite pose. The plastic feels a little slippery. Must be some leftover mold release from the factory. You place the figure on your shelf. It almost looks like another bead of sweat has formed on Kobeni’s face. You are impressed by Good Smile Company’s attention to detail. As Kobeni Higashiyama stands guard on your shelf, a bead of sweat rolls down her suited form and pools by her feet on the clear plastic stand. It is early October 2023.

I have always thought that TNG and all Trek shows of that era use touchscreens because it was the "futuristic and cool" design aesthetic at the time.
But Mike Okuda says otherwise. He says it was a cost measure. If you are making a control panel with physical switches, that costs a lot to manufacture per square inch of panel. The absolute cheapest way to do a control panel is to have a sheet of plexiglass with a graphic sheet behind it, and a small backlight behind that. So that was what they went with, and the futuristic look was just a bonus.
Which then made the Enterprise show's control panels cost a lot more, because they had to be physical toggles and buttons. Like, at least 3x more expensive. Even with cutting corners! Like, a lot of the "buttons" were not actually buttons, they were just little stick-on rubber doo-dads, like you stick on the bottom of furniture so it doesn't scratch the floor.

let’s dispel once and for all the fiction that mechanical keyswitches are good. They aren’t that much better than the alternatives.
More earnestly: the number one benefit of mechanical keyswitches is that they grant a designer an extraordinary degree of latitude when it comes to the structure and design of a keyboard. Unless you really highly value clickiness the majority of their features can be matched by high quality rubber domes from any decent keyboard manufacturer.
Their real strength is that you can pick consistent, reliable switches and put them anywhere you want in 3D space and just run wires to them to make a unique 1 of 1 keyboard that perfectly fits you, and you can easily stick a microcontroller with custom firmware in there to implement whatever features you want.
I got a Logitech ergo rubber dome today and it feels great, the biggest issue is that I wish it didn’t have a numpad and I wish it had more thumb buttons so that they could do more work. And of course I would! That’s what my homemade custom mechanical split keyboard looks like! I could make that to exact specs with some wood tools and a laser cut sheet of brass for the switchplate, whereas this Logitech is a miracle made of over a dozen unique injection moulded parts with an overall mould cost probably exceeding USD 50k!
I would love to have exactly the perfect high end rubber dome mass-produced keyboard of my dreams, but no one makes it, and that’s, reasonable, I have very specific dreams, but I have never understood bog standard layout mechanicals. You could be having a much better time with something with nicer switches!
Sorely tempted to figure out if I can physically hack off the numpad here and sneakily hot-glue some kailh choc switches to the wristrest as thumb keys. At the moment I'm just putting my trackball square on top of the numpad which works fine. I'll print a cap for it later. This is going to end up at Gainful Employment Location not home. At the very least I want to see if there's a way to distinguish the two spacebars in software and use some clever hacks to make them behave as enter/backspace/both.
ISO enter keys were sent by the devil but I don't really have a lot of good options unless I want to import ANSI keyboards.
