Angela Carter wasn't born in Bristol, but she studied at Bristol university and wrote more than half of her novels here, and so the city has always claimed her as its own. She is special to me because her novel, The Magic Toyshop, and her short story collection, The Bloody Chamber, were the first texts on the women's writing module I had reluctantly taken in my first year at university. I didn't want to be associated with what I understood feminism to be at the time. I was an idiot.
