Royal Canin Hepatic (Liver) Dry & Wet Dog Food Review - The Dog Nutritionist
In this video, I'm Cam Wimble, a certified Dog Nutritionist, sharing my review of Royal Canin Hepatic (Liver) Dry & Wet Dog Food. I discuss the importance of healthy dog food and how it can support your dog's liver function. I explain the role of the liver, the factors affecting its function, and the ingredients in this prescription dog food.
The liver is like a computer in your dog's body, needing natural food to function well. Unnatural foods can strain the liver unnecessarily. Feeding your dog fresh, healthy food to support its liver without overwhelming it is crucial.

The yeast colony only becomes a problem when something causes it to grow out of control. Yeast thrives in warm, moist environments, so ear and paw infections are common in dogs. Between their wrinkles, wrinkled dog breeds such as Shar Peis and English Bulldogs are also susceptible to yeast infections. However, yeast may infect a portion or the entirety of your dog's skin. Possible yeast infection symptoms include: Irritated or itchy skin Skin that is crusty, flaky, or scaly Hyperpigmentation (darker-than-usual skin) is a common skin condition. Thickened skin ("elephant skin") Hair loss Yellow, brown, or bloody effusion (like from the ears) Musty odor (might smell like yeast, popcorn, or Fritos) Chronic or recurrent ear infections A yeast infection can be treated both internally and externally. Your veterinarian may recommend either approach. 1- Internal (oral) Therapy If your dog has a severe, widespread, or chronic yeast infection, your veterinarian may prescribe oral medication. Your veterinarian will typically prescribe an antifungal medication such as fluconazole, itraconazole, or ketoconazole. Yeast infections can also result in secondary bacterial infections, so your veterinarian may recommend an antibiotic. It may be necessary for your dog to take these medications for several months. 2- External Treatment (topical) In addition to (or sometimes in place of) oral medication, your veterinarian may prescribe a medicated shampoo as a topical treatment for your dog. Two times per week, you may need to apply an antifungal shampoo to your dog's coat and leave it on for at least 10 minutes before rinsing. Up to 12 weeks of twice-weekly baths may be required to eradicate a yeast infection. Also Read : Best Food For French Bulldogs With Sensitive Stomach What Ingredients Should an Anti-Yeast Dog Food Not Contain?
Good yeast-resistant dog food should be devoid of the following: Sweeteners : Yeasts grow when sugars are present. Therefore, anti-yeast foods cannot contain added sugars. Sugar-Rich Foods : As an energy source promoting yeast overgrowth, starchy foods such as wheat and rice are harmful. The same holds for fructose-rich substances such as corn syrup. Common Allergens : Common allergens (soy, corn, and dairy) can exacerbate a yeast infection and should therefore be absent from anti-yeast foods. Conclusion We hope you found Best Dog Food For Allergies and Yeast Infections on our list that can help your dog overcome his yeast infection. We've attempted to include low-carbohydrate, low-sugar, and common allergen dog foods to cover a variety of yeast infection causes. What is your opinion on raw feeding for cats?
My view on this topic will probably generate anon hate again, but I will answer your question anyway.
I am against raw feeding, RMBD and BARF and all that. And no, I am not just another vet who’s been bought by Royal Canin, Hill’s or Big Pharma or The Illuminati or whatever. I am against raw feeding because of the significant health concerns and zoonotic risks that need to be taken into account. I know there is this new trend of feeding raw and not vaccinating, but some of the advocates of this lifestyle need to realize how dangerously ignorant they are.
Since you’ve asked about cats, I will stick to this topic. I am a vet who has spent quite a lot of time at the microbiology department during university years, and I’ve done a lot of research, so before anyone starts throwing tantrums, I know what I am talking about. The main concerns when it comes to this type of diet are the health risks that arise during handling and feeding of raw meat. In fact, even though not all pets get sick, they become carriers and they shed the pathogens, so humans can get contaminated by handling the raw meat, the feeding bowls, faeces or by being groomed by the cat. People need to understand that there is no way of obtaining a raw meat that is pathogen free. If you thought that the meat you eat is ‘sterile’, I have bad news for you. The meat that is destined for human consumption is also contaminated, but cooking destroys the parasites and bacteria. Advocates of raw feeding who claim that freezing the meat will kill ‘everything’ may be right, but it works only in case of parasites (Toxoplasma, Sarcocystes) and some bacteria. But not all of them, and certainly not against their toxins (Clostridium botulinum and its toxin cannot be destroyed by boiling, freezing and not even radiation). Salmonella and E.coli are real bad boys, with their mighty toxins and antibiotic resistance (especially E. coli). There is also Campylobacter, and let’s not forget about Listeria monocytogenes, which is a cold stress resistant bacterium; some strains resist freezing at -18°C and thawing. And guess what: the fatality rates of listeriosis exceed Salmonella and the mortality rate is high even in developed countries. Immunosupressed patients, pregnant women, infants and elderly are at greater risk.
Uncooked (or cooked) fat is also dangerous, because it can cause vomiting and diarrhea. Some people claim that bones help clean the teeth and prevent plaque formation, but they can lead to stomatitis because of trauma, dental fractures or choking; also, there is a risk of intestinal obstruction or worse, perforation caused by splinters. Raw fish can also harm the cat because some of them contain an enzyme that destroys thiamine ( an essential vitamin), that can lead to neurological diseases. Feeding liver can cause vitamin A toxicity.
Those who recommend raw feeding claim that it is the closest to their natural diet, that it is something the cat’s digestive system is prepared to tackle. While this is true for a feral cat who’s been living on mice, lizards and small birds all its life, it’s not the same in case of Mr. Snuggles who sleeps on the windowsill all day and has chronic kidney disease. The feral cat can die of salmonellosis, at the ‘ripe’ age of 2 years, after eating a contaminated mouse, while Mr. Snuggles lives to be 16 on his well balanced, but safe diet. Immunosupressed cats (FeLV, FIV) are at risk of developing life-threatening forms of diseases which would not kill a healthy cat. Cats with renal disease, those who have hepatic problems, cats with diabetes, those with urinary tract infections, cardiac disease or food allergies benefit from a well-balanced, special diet. You can’t feed raw chicken to a cat with CKD who needs protein restriction. My point is, the disadvantages clearly outweigh the advantages. There is no solid, scientific research to back up raw feeding, so until then, all I can do is inform the owners about the potential risks, but in the end, the choice is theirs. I will not start an argument with someone who is adamant on feeding a raw diet to their cat; I’ve read one too many comments on forums made by people who ‘have done their research and know better than vets who are in this just for the money’.
Thank you, Anon!

The prominent stereotype of the fat, happy pet cat with a fish in its mouth turns out to be simply that: a cute stereotype, and a somewhat misleading one. In reality,
felines advanced from desert pets whose diet plans were comprised of all the birds and rodents they can catch. In today’s food, that converts right into red meat and also fowl– as well as just sometimes fish. In this article, we discover protein-rich alternatives for the best damp cat food.

Is Wet Food Better?
A diet plan of top notch wet food can supply all the pet healthy proteins, fats, and also nutrients our kitties need. Unique diets respond to the demands of felines with sensitive tummies, allergies, kidney problems, and age-related requirements. That said, there are reasons why several pet parents decide instead for dry food or feed their cats a mix of wet as well as completely dry food.
Right here are several of the advantages and disadvantages of a wet-food diet: Advantages: Plenty of healthy dampness. Wet food supplies hydration, which felines need. If your cat is not a passionate water drinker, a diet regimen of damp food can make sure that they get fluids.
Variety. While some cats demand one taste of food, others obtain burnt out quickly and a variety of food urges them to eat. Lots of damp foods been available in little containers or plans as well as are sold as assortments. This makes it simple to keep your finicky eater interested at mealtime.
Structure. Whether your pet cat gobbles, nibbles, or licks, there’s likely to be a damp food that suites their design. Select from plates, broths, pieces, and creamy gravies. My rescue felines all had severe
oral concerns that disrupted consuming. With limited teeth left, they value those patés.
Disadvantages:
Feeding timetable. You don’t desire to leave a heap of damp food in a bowl if you function lengthy hrs. It can attract bugs, plus it will be less appetizing– as well as
harmful– in 4 hours. But if you feed small amounts as well as get home late, you’ll be greeted by a yowling, anxious cat. Mess and
odor. Damp food often tends to be messy and also foul-smelling; you’ll need to clean bowls extensively daily. Dental health. While some completely dry foods will certainly assist keep your pet cat’s teeth devoid of tartar, wet food has no cleaning effect. You will certainly have
to do some regular tooth treatment. One problem to take into consideration when feeding your feline damp food is what to do with feline food leftovers. They require to be cooled, but some felines will certainly give you the stink-eye if you provide them cooled food. Keep in mind that damp cat food will certainly last in the refrigerator for a week at the really the majority of if your cat is ALRIGHT with leftovers. Afterwards, throw it.(Want to stay clear of waste? Freeze, then thaw, the leftovers.)
Picking the most effective Wet Cat Foods

These foods have what’s called “the AAFCO statement”– a label stating that they satisfy the basic minimum nutritional demands for felines that have actually been established by the Feline Nutrition Expert (FNE) Subcommittee of the

Do Siamese Cats Have Sensitive Stomachs?
As a passionate cat lover, you might know a lot about different breeds of cat, but the slinky Siamese cat is different from those other cat breeds.
It has been bred selectively over generations to have a lean and muscular body and a thin triangular jaw that adds to the uniqueness of this particular breed.
However, these beautiful and distinctive features are combined with a delicate digestive system, which means you need to take special care of their nutrition before they start troubling you.
Why Do Siamese Cats Have Sensitive Stomachs?
So, the question that your cat keeps asking you, “Why does my stomach keep roaring Hooman?” can be answered most commonly on nutritional grounds.
The food that you give to your Siamese must maintain their lean mass, while also making sure that they avoid weight gain. Most Siamese owners fail to give their cat the specific, digestible feed they need.
Moreover, since they have a unique jaw shape, they are used to kibbling, i.e. chewing before swallowing. This slows down their speed of food intake and also reduces tartar on the teeth.
While this jawline puts them at an advantage, if you do not care about their nutrition enough, it is going to come back and bite at you!
Sometimes, it is the combination of food that you give that upsets their stomach. Since most cats are used to a combination of wet and dry food to maintain their taste palates, increasing one of them in their diet may upset their stomach.
Moreover, most vets are of the opinion that you should avoid giving a wheat-rich diet to your Siamese, which may be the reason for their runny stomach or other digestive issues.
Signs that Your Siamese has a Sensitive Stomach
There are clinical signs that indicate your cat may be suffering from digestion problems. An occasional episode of diarrhea or vomiting must not be a cause of concern, however, if the episodes start recurring, you should look for the following symptoms:
Weight Loss
Chronic Soft Stool
Multiple episodes of diarrhea and vomiting over a 30-day period
Loss of appetite
Refusing food
Signs of pain and discomfort (cry for help)
Inability to keep the food in stomach (vomiting)
Sickness and Lethargy
Multiple episodes of vomiting in a day, despite no intake of water or food
When you observe any of these signs, you should consult a vet that will perform radiographs, bloodwork, and even ultrasound in some cases to rule out any other possibilities behind the signs and symptoms.
What Can I Do to Prevent Diarrhea?
Since it is clear now that Siamese do get their stomach upset easily, you should take care of the following:
Do not feed your Siamese cat the food that it avoids on a regular basis (Even if it is over the counter, it can cause diarrhea)
When you are planning to switch foods, do it at least over two weeks’ time
Make sure that your cat is on the monthly heartworm prevention program that protects them from gastrointestinal parasites.
Have them tested every six months or every year for parasites and other similar diseases that may cause digestion problems.
For your convenience, here are some home remedies to help prevent Diarrhea in your Siamese cat:
Include pumpkin (fresh or canned) in their diet – It helps increase fiber intake
Include white rice in your cat’s diet
Give your cat bland food
Give them Greek yogurt in regular food
Include probiotics that are labeled as suitable for cats
Include hairball remedy supplements if they are having a hard time coughing out hairballs
Signs That It Could Be More Than Just Digestive Issues
Some vets are of the opinion that they do not have a sensitive stomach, but are just picky about their food or the diseases mentioned below may contribute to the problem that is keeping your Siamese up all night.
Since all the digestion problems start from the alimentary tract that is beyond the throat, we know that something else can be wrong too, apart from the nutritional requirements.
Esophageal Hypo Motility
This disease results in weak muscular activity, hence the food takes a lot longer to pass through the gullet of your Siamese.
Adenocarcinomas
It is a particular cancer of the small intestine in the body that can make digestion difficult. Siamese cats also usually have high chances of cancer, therefore ruling out this option may be comforting, but it will not be a smart move.
Pyloric Stenosis
Young Siamese kittens usually suffer from this disease where the stomach starts narrowing, thus not allowing enough space for the food to digest easily. It can result in vomiting and gastric distention.
Hepatic Amyloidosis
Although unlikely, but one of the serious symptoms of this disease include vomiting and nausea, which can be linked to sensitive stomachs. However, as mentioned earlier, it is highly unlikely that your Siamese may be suffering from this disease.
A Pre-deposition of Eating Wool
Cats like to lick their coat, so a pre-deposition of wool may be one of the causes of concern, but again, it is highly unlikely that this is making the stomach more sensitive. Although, it may contribute to irritation in your cat’s stomach.
One other theory suggests that if your Siamese is a purebred, i.e., a slender body with a long face, it may be biting off more than it can chew. This is because they may suffer from vague immune system issues more often than Siamese cats normally do.
One of these diseases include an Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) that is caused by the immune system reacting negatively to the bad bacteria or certain foods, or any other substances produced within the intestinal tract by parasites.
What Feed is Best for My Siamese?
As a Siamese cat owner, you must be aware of the fact that Siamese cats make for pricey pets. They are generally expensive than other cat breeds and therefore, buying an expensive pet just to put them in poor conditions does not make any sense.
So, I am sure you are very careful when it comes to your pet’s health, but doing a bit of research and taking extra care of their diet will keep you out of the vet’s office.
As mentioned earlier, Siamese cats must take a balanced diet, which should include dry, wet as well as fresh, and mostly homemade food.
Dry Feed
As kittens, Siamese must be given a feed that is rich in proteins and fats that promote growth. You should also make sure that their dry feed is rich in vitamins and calcium. It is recommended to keep 2 to 3 brands of feed at a time that suits your Siamese.
When adults, they should have a well-balanced feed, with around 40% fat, 25% protein, vitamins, Omega-3, Omega 6 and a diet that is rich in fiber. If your Siamese is neutered, they will have a different feed to other Siamese cats.
Older Siamese may not require such a nutrition-rich diet since their day does not involve as much physical activity, however, you must make sure that you do not cut off too much nutrition.
Wet Feed
You must be familiar with a range of off-the-shelf products that are either in cans or air-tight containers. Therefore, once opened, they should be stored in the refrigerator.
Wet feed should contain a minimum of 15-25% fat, and 35% protein while the carb content should not be more than 5%. The feed should also contain Omega-6 and Omega-3 fatty acids. Moreover, slightly higher than 0.10% of taurine should also be included in the diet. Essential elements like calcium, phosphorus, iron, potassium, and magnesium should also be present.
It is also advised to not overuse wet feed because it can contribute to bad breath, soft and stinky feces, as well as dental plaque.
Homemade Feed
Your homemade food for your Siamese should complement their feed. As mentioned earlier, the best-balanced diet for your Siamese will involve a mixture of wet, dry and fresh foods.
Slices of home-cooked turkey and ham are some of the favorites for Siamese. Other foods include chicken, cod, hake, and salmon. You should also remember that these foods should never be served raw – You need to grill or boil them before serving. Also, make sure that there are no bones in the fish when you serve.
Another advice – Plant birdseed in a pot so that your cat can use the buds for cleansing
Keeping all the nutrition in check may be a tad too overwhelming for you at the moment, but it is actually a piece of cake. All you need to do is to check the labels whenever you buy an off-the-shelf product.
You can save money at the vet’s office just by keeping these things in check.
