Opinion: Town Sums up the Delusions of the Right Wing
The embrace of the country star’s anti-city ‘modern lynching song’ by Republicans encapsulates their nostalgia and paranoia
— Arwa Mahdawi | July 20; 2023
Tumblr media
‘Small towns are full of “good ol’ boys” who were “raised up right”. Cities, meanwhile, are hotbeds of violence … and diversity.’ Photograph: Wade Payne/Invision/AP
Jason Aldean is a country music star and a big fan of law and order. He loves the law so much, in fact, that he’s willing to take it into his own hands.
If you come to his (imaginary) small town and disrespect a cop or engage in any sort of protest, you will regret it.
Such is the theme of Aldean’s new song, Try That in a Small Town, which is all about how the singer and his pals will aggressively deal with unseemly behaviour on their turf. A sample extract: “Cuss out a cop, spit in his face … Well, try that in a small town / See how far ya make it down the road. / Around here, we take care of our own …”
A little later in the song Aldean elaborates further on what might happen if lines are crossed. “Got a gun that my grandad gave me / They say one day they’re gonna round up. / Well, that shit might fly in the city, good luck.” He is, it would appear, referencing a conspiracy theory that the government is going to confiscate Americans’ guns to impose martial law.
Try That in a Small Town was released in May but when the music video came out last Friday it generated immediate controversy. The video leaves little doubt as to what Aldean is trying to communicate: it intersperses footage of him singing in front of Maury county courthouse in Tennessee – the site of the lynching of a Black man, Henry Choate, in 1927 – with footage from protests, looting and civil unrest. Small towns are wholesome, the message is. Full of “good ol’ boys” who were “raised up right”. Cities, meanwhile, are hotbeds of violence … and diversity.
That last bit isn’t spelled out – it’s not like Aldean yells “I’m a massive racist!” in the middle of the track – but the dog whistles are difficult to ignore. The song has been called “a modern lynching song” by detractors and the video was pulled from Country Music Television (CMT) on Monday. (While CMT has confirmed the video was taken off rotation, it hasn’t put out a statement as to why.) Fellow country star Sheryl Crow has also voiced her disapproval. “There’s nothing small-town or American about promoting violence,” Crow tweeted on Tuesday. She further noted that Aldean should know better, “having survived a mass shooting”. Crow was referencing the shooting at Las Vegas’s Route 91 Harvest festival in 2017: the deadliest mass shooting by a lone shooter in modern US history. Aldean was performing and got out unscathed. He was lucky. Sixty people were killed and 867 injured. Those people weren’t killed and injured by a Black Lives Matter protester. They were killed by Stephen Paddock, an angry white man from Iowa.
Try That in a Small Town has generated a lot of criticism, but it also has fervent supporters. Including, of course, GOP lawmakers. “I am shocked by what I’m seeing in this country with people attempting to cancel this song and cancel Jason and his beliefs,” the South Dakota Republican governor, Kristi Noem, posted in a video on Twitter on Wednesday. The Tennessee house GOP leader, William Lamberth, similarly tweeted: “Loved this song since it was released and will continue to fight every day to spread small town values … Give it a listen. The woke mob will hate you for liking this song.” Sarah Huckabee Sanders, the governor of Arkansas, also didn’t miss the chance to stoke a little culture war. “The Left is now more concerned about Jason Aldean’s song calling out looters and criminals than they are about stopping looters and criminals,” she tweeted.
Aldean, for his part, is furious at insinuations there is anything racist in his song about shooting outsiders who come to his little country town.
“In the past 24 hours I have been accused of releasing a pro-lynching song,” Aldean tweeted on Wednesday, “and was subject to the comparison that I (direct quote) was not too pleased with the nationwide BLM protests. These references are not only meritless, but dangerous. There is not a single lyric in the song that references race or points to it – and there isn’t a single video clip that isn’t real news footage.”
If Aldean isn’t trying to make a point about the Black Lives Matter protests, what is Try That in a Small Town about then? Community, apparently. “When u grow up in a small town, it’s that unspoken rule of ‘we all have each other’s backs and we look out for each other,’” Aldean wrote on Instagram when he launched the video. “It feels like somewhere along the way, that sense of community and respect has gotten lost.”
Tumblr media
Jason Aldean, from the ‘small town’ of Macon, Georgia. Photograph: Amy Harris/Invision/AP
Perhaps you’re wondering which quaint small town Aldean grew up in. The answer is: he didn’t. Aldean is from Macon, Georgia – a city with a population of about 153,000 people. Now he lives in Nashville, a city with a population of approximately 700,000. The small town he’s singing about is a product of his imagination.
But that’s conservatives for you. Last month Nikki Haley tweeted about how much better the US used to be back in the days before marginalized people had rights. “Do you remember when you were growing up, do you remember how simple life was, how easy it felt? It was about faith, family, and country,” she tweeted.
Was the past really that easy for the former South Carolina governor? By her own admission things have got a hell of a lot better for people who, like her, aren’t 100% white. “Years ago I was disqualified from a pageant because they didn’t know whether to put me in the white category or the black,” she wrote on Facebook in 2012. “I was neither. Tonight I watched my daughter get first place in her school pageant. God has an amazing way of bringing things full circle.” God also has an amazing away of depriving people like Haley of self-awareness.
Aldean’s song doesn’t just epitomize manufactured rightwing nostalgia, it also encapsulates rightwing paranoia. People on the right are obsessed with the idea that big cities are violent hotbeds of crime where you risk your life every time you nip out for a pint of milk. In reality, however, big cities tend to be safer than small towns. A 2013 study by the University of Pennsylvania, for example, found the risk of death from an injury was more than 20% higher in rural small towns than in larger cities. “Cars, guns and drugs are the unholy trinity causing the majority of injury deaths in the US” one of the researchers told NBC News at the time.
The pandemic, to be fair, saw a rise in violent crimes in cities. But even still, you’ve got a better chance of living a long, healthy life in a city. A 2021 US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report on mortality data from 1999 to 2019 found people living in rural areas die at higher rates than those living in urban areas. That’s because they have less access to healthcare and are more likely to live in poverty.
So what’s next for Aldean? Well, I’ve got some good news for all the Republican lawmakers screeching about how unfair it is that Aldean has been cancelled by the woke mob: he’s going to be fine. Indeed, he’s going to be more than fine. Country music (and America) has a way of opening its arms to people accused of racism and making them feel right at home. Just look at Morgan Wallen, for example. In February 2021 TMZ published a video of the musician drunkenly yelling the N-word during a conversation with a friend. He was shunned from polite society for a few months but made a rapid comeback. He won album of the year at the Academy of Country Music Awards in 2022. His song Last Night is currently in its 14th week at number one on the Billboard Hot 100. If it sticks there a little longer he’ll beat the 19-week record currently held by Lil Nas X’s Old Town Road, featuring Billy Ray Cyrus.
While people on the right may be railing about Aldean being “cancelled”, the sad truth is that this will probably help his career. He’ll go on Fox News and yell about wokeness. He’ll wallow in his imagined victimhood. His song will probably be played in rallies for the next Republican nominee for president. Aldean hasn’t been cancelled or silenced – his message has been amplified.

It’s been seven years since the Route 91 Harvest festival massacre, and it’s completely disappeared from public consciousness — but it had already disappeared from public consciousness outside of Las Vegas basically as soon as it happened. The reason is simple and obvious: no one’s ideological narrative was served by talking about it.
A guy with no particularly visible politics besides being a gun nut shot up a country music festival in Nevada, murdering 60 people and wounding hundreds more. It was deadlier than the Pulse shooting the previous year. The victims didn’t interest the left and the perpetrator didn’t interest the right. Do you, reading this, know that it happened? I know the impact this event had on my then-spouse and her friends and family in Las Vegas. I know that at the time I made many posts, right here, in the vain hope of a single solitary click from anyone at all.
I think at this point in the post you're probably expecting me to draw a sociopolitical conclusion from this.
Which is kind of the point.

I'm obsessed with VGK's Stanley Cup ring.
Golden Knights' championship rings full of symbolism, surprises
The Golden Knights are having 50 rings made for the public that are almost identical to those the players received. They will sell for $75,000 each.
And.
Those diamonds are set in the shape of a star, as seen in the team's "Vegas Strong" banner from 2017 that paid tribute to the victims of the Route 91 Harvest music festival shooting on the Las Vegas Strip. The Golden Knights have reflected on that tragedy, which occurred on Oct. 1, 2017, throughout their time in the NHL. The franchise honored victims and first responders before its first home game on Oct. 10, 2017.
$75,000 per ring that's available to the public. Holy moly.
ETA: I legit think the detachable pendant is GENIUS! And if I was a member of VGK that won the Cup I'd fucking wear the pendant at ALL times. They will need to pry it out of my cold dead hands.

Las Vegas police arrested a man who allegedly threatened a mass shooting during Tuesday’s Stanley Cup Final Game 5 at T-Mobile Arena, according to multiple outlets.
On Tuesday, police reportedly responded to a local business before noon where a man, who was later identified as Matthew DeSavio, 33, made the shooting threat.
According to the Associated Press, which cited the arrest report, there were at least three people who reached out to authorities about DeSavio, including a relative with a restraining order against him.
The suspect reportedly posted incriminating messages on social media about the game, saying the city should be ready for a “massacre.”
“I’m coming for you guys tonight and I hope you get every [expletive] police officer in Vegas Golden Knights there to defend you!” one message read, police told KLAS. “Hope Sin City is ready for the Mandalay Bay massacre part duex [sic].”
Golden Knights players celebrate after their 9-3 Stanley Cup-clinching win over the Panthers in Game 5.AP
The latter part of the message refers to the Las Vegas Strip massacre in October 2017, where 58 people were killed on the night of the shooting while over 500 were injured at the Route 91 Harvest Music Festival.
It is the deadliest mass shooting in US history.
“I warned y’all October 1st was just a preview,” DeSavio reportedly wrote in a separate post.
Matthew DeSavio was arrested after allegedly making the threats.LVMPD
During his arrest — just hours before the game — Tuesday, police officers reported that DeSavio “declared several excited utterances asking if anyone had seen his Facebook posts yet and that the Knights need to win by a certain amount or he will do a repeat of the Mandalay Bay 1 October shooting,” per KLAS.
This week’s incident wasn’t the first time DeSavio has been investigated for threatening social media posts.
In October of last year, DeSavio was reported for a “disturbing Facebook post” and ordered by a judge to undergo a competency evaluation, but would later be released without treatment.
“Something big is about to hit the Vegas Strip. #October1stwasjustapreview! Let’s [expletive] [expletive] up before I literally #blowup Paradise NV,” a Facebook post read, according to police, KLAS reported.
Though not formally charged yet, DeSavio now faces charges of threatening an act of terrorism or mass destruction and is being held on $60,000 bail, according to the AP.

SMART BOMB
The Completely Unnecessary News Analysis
By Christopher Smart
July 16, 2024
“GUNS DON'T KILL PEOPLE”
Hey Wilson, how many times have you heard Republicans say,“Guns don't kill people, people kill people.” Way too many. We heard it after Sandy Hook; we heard it after the Route 91 Harvest music festival in Las Vegas; we heard it after Uvalde, Texas – the list of mass shootings in this country goes on and on and on. There may be limits on the First Amendment but with the Second Amendment, not so much. We have some 400 million firearms in the United States – more than one for every man, woman and child. This is a violent country with well over 40,000 gun-related deaths per year – an average of 120 per day. The United States imported or manufactured 2.8 million AR-15 assault-style rifles in 2020 alone. It is by far the biggest selling firearm and was designed for one purpose – to kill people. Not surprisingly Donald Trump was shot by an assault rifle purchased legally. Since 2016, Trump more than any other major political figure, has contributed to a rising trend in violent rhetoric. Now, however, Republicans are blaming Democrats for the attempted assassination, as though Dems had called for the violent insurrection of Jan. 6, 2021. No one knows why 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks wanted to kill Trump but one thing is for sure – he wanted to do it with a gun. Call it freedom.
DEMONIC PORTAL OPENS OVER WHITE HOUSE
“Satan get thee behind me.” That's just one of the phrases heard echoing around Milwaukee's Republican National Convention where Democrats aren't political opponents but enemies to be smitten down like Kraken. Christian Nationalism has swarmed over the GOP confab, preaching that America's godliness is under siege and Christian soldiers must rise up to take it back. It's a fun-loving bunch who can throw down with the best. A “demonic portal” has opened above the Biden White House, said Donald Trump's fixer Roger Stone in The Washington Post. Former national security adviser Michael Flynn, called former House speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) a demon, the Post reported. As many MAGA acolytes know after watching a viral Trump video, God sent him to Earth to save it. They have, along with the former president, himself, compared Trump's trials and tribulations to the plight of Jesus of Nazareth. Proof positive: God saved Trump from an assassination attempt last weekend. Earlier, Trump declared election day, Nov. 5, as “Christian Visibility Day.” But it's not love the Trump faithful came to Milwaukee to spread but a call to arms. Matthew 10:34-36: “I came not to send peace, but a sword.” Oh yeah, and God bless America.
HEY GOV. COX, GO AHEAD, EAT YOUR DAMN CAKE
OK, we know politicians can talk out of both sides their mouths, but this takes the cake: (WARNING – possible neck injuries due to whiplash.) At the National Governors Association’s meeting last week Gov. Spencer Cox said he would not vote for Donald Trump but hopes he wins. Eat your cake and have it, too? Incredible. Yep, he's the same Gov. Cox who urged us to be kind to transsexuals and then signed legislation to keep them from public restrooms. What is wrong with our politics? Here's a clue: The Utah Supreme Court just ruled the state legislature can not mess with citizen initiatives – in this case, one that would create an independent commission to draw voting districts. The initiative passed after Utahns – particularly Salt Lake County residents – grew sick and tired of Republican gerrymandering that sliced up the county like rhubarb pie. True to form lawmakers twisted the public's petition into the same old pretzel. Voters sued. And guess who submitted an amicus brief on behalf of the legislature – Spencer “Disagree Better” Cox. Surprise! The court's unanimous ruling was met with sour grapes from GOP leaders. House Speaker Mike Schultz and Senate President Stuart Adams issued a joint statement, saying in part, “Boohoo. Who's democracy is this, anyway. Boohoo, boohoo.”
Post script – Well that's gunna do it for another historic week here at Smart Bomb where our staff keeps track of political rhetoric so you don't have to. Utah Sen. Mike Lee: “We need government control, not gun control. Otherwise, tribalism advances at the national level.” WTF. Former White House attorney Ty Cobb: “[I] think it was always Judge Aileen Cannon's objective, frankly, to prevent this (Trump's classified documents case) from going to trial.” House Speaker Mike Johnson: “When the message goes out constantly that the election of Donald Trump would be a threat to democracy, that the republic would end, I mean it, it heats up the environment.” Ohio Sen J.D.Vance (just selected as Trump's running mate): “I’m truly skeptical that Mike Pence’s life was ever in danger (on Jan. 6). I think politics and politics people like to really exaggerate things from time to time.” Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (AOC): “Corruption, without consequence, infects all it touches. And that is why Congress has a constitutional and moral obligation to hold these (Supreme Court) justices accountable...” she said introducing a pair of resolutions calling for the impeachment and removal of Justices Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito.
Hells bells Wilson, it's kinda like we've collided with a parallel universe where everything is crazy or maybe someone put LSD in the water supply. You know, they are selling all kinds of new bottled water said to be magic. Who knows. What we do know is that you and the band have something apropos for this moment in history. So, hit it, Wilson:
One pill makes you larger And one pill makes you small And the ones that mother gives you Don't do anything at all Go ask Alice When she's ten feet tall And if you go chasing rabbits And you know you're going to fall Tell 'em a hookah-smoking caterpillar Has given you the call Call Alice When she was just small When the men on the chessboard Get up and tell you where to go And you've just had some kind of mushroom And your mind is moving low Go ask Alice I think she'll know When logic and proportion Have fallen sloppy dead And the White Knight is talking backwards And the Red Queen's off with her head Remember what the dormouse said Feed your head Feed your head

Which is the better option, Darjeeling or Manali?
Choosing between Darjeeling and Manali depends on your preferences and the type of experience you are seeking. Both places offer unique attractions and have their own charm. Here are some factors to consider for each destination: Darjeeling:
Scenery: Known for its breathtaking views of the Himalayas, Darjeeling offers stunning landscapes with tea gardens, lush greenery, and the iconic Kanchenjunga mountain.
Tea Gardens: Darjeeling is famous for its tea plantations. You can visit tea estates, learn about the tea-making process, and enjoy scenic walks in the tea gardens.
Cultural Diversity: Darjeeling is a melting pot of different cultures, with influences from Nepal, Tibet, and Bhutan. You can experience diverse traditions, cuisine, and festivals.
Toy Train: The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, offers a charming and nostalgic journey through picturesque landscapes.
Manali:
Adventure Activities: If you're into adventure sports, Manali is a great choice. It offers opportunities for trekking, paragliding, river rafting, and skiing (in winter).
Natural Beauty: Manali is surrounded by snow-capped mountains, pine forests, and meandering rivers. Solang Valley and Rohtang Pass are popular destinations for their scenic beauty.
Hiking and Trekking: The region around Manali provides excellent trekking routes. Beas Kund, Hampta Pass, and Chandratal Lake are some of the trekking options.
Cultural Experience: Manali has a unique blend of Hindu and Tibetan culture. You can visit ancient temples, monasteries, and explore local markets.
Consider your interests, the time of year you plan to visit, and the kind of activities you enjoy. If you prefer a serene mountain experience with cultural diversity, Darjeeling might be a better fit. On the other hand, if you're seeking adventure activities and a mix of Hindu and Tibetan culture, Manali could be the ideal choice.
