Dayenu: A Pesach Miracle
Remember how a few weeks ago, I shared about how an issue at work had turned sour, so sour it might have even been antisemitic? Well, last week, on Rosh Chodesh Nisan, a miracle occurred. Click below to read what! #dayenu #Pesach #musings
Remember how a few weeks ago, I shared about how an issue at work had turned sour, so sour it might have even been antisemitic? Well, last week, on Rosh Chodesh Nisan, a miracle occurred. It wasn’t a huge miracle; nothing like the splitting of the Red Sea, but it was my miracle. My little miracle, or Hashem’s way of telling me everything is going to be okay. I can’t reveal everything now, all…

30 Nisan 5784 (7-8 May 2024)
Chodesh Iyyar Tov! In Hebrew months with thirty days the thirtieth day of the month and the first day of the following month are both part of Rosh Chodesh (the beginning or “head” of the new month). The 30th of Nisan is also the first night of the third week of the Omer count. Last night was the fourteenth day of the Omer. After tonight’s count, 34 days remain before Shavuot.

Shabbat HaChodesh 2023 / שַׁבָּת הַחֹדֶשׁ 5783
Shabbat before Rosh Chodesh Nissan 🕍
Shabbat HaChodesh for Hebrew Year 5783 begins at sundown on Friday, 17 March 2023and ends at nightfall on Saturday, 18 March 2023. This corresponds to Parashat Vayakhel-Pekudei.
Shabbat HaChodesh (“Sabbath [of the] month” שבת החודש) precedes the first of the Hebrew month of Nisan during which Passover is celebrated. Exodus 12:1-20 and the laws of Passover. On the first day of Nisan, G-d presented the first commandment of how to “sanctify the new moon” (kiddush hachodesh) for the onset of Rosh Chodesh and thus Nisan becomes the first month of the Jewish year (counting by months.).

Good Rosh Chodesh Nisan Blessings, Amen. As we enter the gateway of the Lunar month of Nisan, holy spiritual shimmering rays of liberty, freedom and salvation touch our eternal core Biblical roots. Nisan greets us with shared values and a deep inner soulful longing for the sanctuary of the upper worlds of beauty, purity, peace and grace. May hope and faith shine uplifting beams of love upon us and into our world.
May Am Yisrael's greatness, strength, and resilience continue to forge goodwill, enhance Oneness, and overcome adversity to support tribalhood that helps humankind evolve towards a better, brighter future with beautiful good fortune realities in our lives, our communities, and our world. Wishing us all this golden feeling, Amen.

Excerpt from the weekly pre-Shabbat email from my local-ish synagogue with exact location details and names redacted:
Standing outside, the temperature will drop, and all natural light will fade. Nocturnal animals may even start to rouse themselves, fooled by the total darkness. You might remember a similar celestial occurrence, the "Great American Eclipse" of 2017. [...] If 2017 was a warmup, 2024's eclipse will be the real deal. And, according to NASA, the next total solar eclipse that will cross the US is expected in August 2044.
I've been excited to experience this eclipse since first hearing about it. [...] Plus, this eclipse occurs hours before Rosh Chodesh Nisan - the month that ushers one of four Jewish new years and is marked by the spiritual energy of freedom (representing the escape from Egypt and the birth of the Israelite nation.) As you might have guessed, I've had the date marked on my calendar for a while now, and most of the [synagogue] staff is tired of hearing me talk about it.
With that said, I was surprised to read that Jewish tradition views solar eclipses as bad omens. I expected there to be a bracha to recite upon seeing the eclipse, but with some research, I actually found quite the opposite. There's even a midrash that states that we should pray for the bad omen (the eclipse) to come to an end.
This burst my bubble. Plus, Jewish tradition certainly doesn't stand alone in interpreting an eclipse as a bad omen. Countless cultures and ample folklore link solar eclipses to impending doom.
For me, this is a good time to instill a "when you know better, you do better" approach. Thanks to astrological and mathematical advances, we have a much better understanding of our planet and solar system than our ancestors did. Not only do we know the eclipse will end, we know it’s coming. So, while there isn't a long-established celebration of the solar eclipse in Jewish culture, it still feels important to me to sanctify this experience of God's creation.
I hope we can bring our modern wisdom into play to welcome this solar eclipse, rather than to fear it. I want us to revel in this wholesome, harmless natural phenomenon, and to celebrate this exceedingly rare opportunity to collectively appreciate God's creation, whether it inspires awe, doom, joy, or all of the above. And you'll be glad to know that – while there might not be a halachically endorsed bracha — Rabbi S says that reciting the following blessing would be appropriate:
בָּרוּךְ אַתָּה ה’ אֳלֹהֵינוּ מֶלֶךְ הָעוֹלָם עוֹשֶׂה מַעֲשֵׂה בְרֵאשִׁית Baruch atah Adonai, Eloheinu melech ha-olam, oseh ma'aseh v'reishit. Blessed are You, Lord our God, King of the Universe, Author of Creation.
[This has been scheduled to post on Sunday, 7 April 2024, or the day before the total solar eclipse.]

the 9th of february 2024
And a post from yesterday by John Parsons:
This evening (at sundown) marks Rosh Chodesh Adar (רֹאשׁ חוֹדֶשׁ אַדָר), or the beginning of the Hebrew month of Adar. On the Biblical calendar the month of Adar is the *last month of the year* counting from Nisan, though during a Jewish “leap year” (as we have this year) an additional month of Adar, called Adar Sheni (or Adar II), is added to the calendar.
The month of Adar falls during February/March on the secular (goyishke) calendar. The 14th day of the last month of the year (i.e., either Adar or Adar Sheni during a leap year) marks the holiday of Purim -- which is always celebrated exactly 30 days before Passover (Megillah 1:4). During both Purim and Passover we celebrate God’s deliverance of His people, and therefore Adar is considered one of the happiest of the months of the Jewish year. As it says in the Talmud, “When Adar comes, joy is increased” (Ta'anit 29a).

Consider These New Beginnings
17 Nisan - Noah’s Ark safely rested on Mt. Ararat (Gen 8:4) Note that the seventh month was later designated as the first month at the time of the Exodus (Ex. 12:2).
17 Nisan - Hebrews entered Egypt (Exo 12:40-41) 430 years before deliverance. ...even the self-same day it came to pass...
17 Nisan - Moses led the Israelites through the Parting of the Red Sea (Exo 3:18, 5:3)

17 Nisan - Cleansing of the Temple by Hezekiah (eight hundred years after entering the Promised Land. (2 Chronicles 29:1-28)
17 Nisan - Queen Esther saved the Jews from Elimination (Esther 3:12, 5:1)
17 Nisan – Resurrection of Messiah
There are no coincidences in God. The odds of just two of the above events happening accidentally on the same day of the Hebrew year (360 days) are one in 129,000. And the odds of these events all happening coincidentally on the same day of the Hebrew year are one in 783 quadrillions, 864 trillion, 876 Billion, 960 Million (783,864,876,960,000,000).
All these events point to one truth, God planned and orchestrated each of the events culminating it with Messiah defeating, once and for all our enemy Satan. Death was overturn by the resurrection of Yeshua Jesus on that faithful 17 Nisan. Hence giving humanity a new beginning. Death was turned into life and defeat into victory. Our responsibility is to accept Jesus as our savior, live righteously and walk in the newness of His saving grace.
Peace be unto you in Yeshua’s name.

We’re in a particular window of time starting yesterday that sets these next three days apart from the others. In Jewish tradition, 3 is significant for the number of days in which we must descend in order to ascend, with the rebirth being complete on the third day. This sacred time, mixed with the Rosh Chodesh of Nisan, Spring Equinox, and Masechet Rosh Hashanah, means we have a super-charged week ahead. I consider this special window of time as the portal for moving dreams to reality. Winter is heavily associated with the dream state for me. It’s a very inward journey and very focused on planning (dreaming) for the future. I’ve had the pleasure of spending all winter dreaming of my garden, my offerings, and community once the thaw begins. This is the time to manifest your dreams into a reality, to set your intention and make it happen, to reach out to your allies and your comrades to build coalitions and create the new earth. Now is your time to make your dream a reality. https://www.instagram.com/p/CqDY9-1u-R1/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
