Something about roses symbolizing unsatisfied women/women realizing they don't need their respective unfulfilling male partners. Something about the "blonde mother" motif not necessarily being that these mothers are "bad" bc they forsake/leave their neglectful/abusive husbands (go queens), but that the choices they make when they realize they don't want to be forced into that life hurt their children and continue the cycle.

Joyce is a single mother, who is clearly not a blonde mother, like obviously. She's a brunette. It's intentional. It wasn't wrong that Joyce divorced that POS Lonnie, not at all. She doesn't need him. It's that Joyce continues to support and love her sons even when it got so hard for her and she doesnt have many choices being a single mother in a conservative town. When Lonnie came back and tried to make her let go of Will, she pushed him out and never gave up on getting Will back no matter what.

You have Karen who is naturally a brunette but dyes her hair blonde. We see that she almost cheats but decides not to, putting her kids wellbeing first and foremost over her happiness ultimately.

Or blonde mothers like Billy's mother who just leaves. I can't judge her of course- it's intentionally complicated. These sorts of things happen to families and the only one who holds all the blame is Neil- the abuser. But as you see Billy, without he presence of his mother, goes onto become like his father.

Or the shittier mothers like Mrs Cunningham and Virginia. Enforcing high standards on their children and abusing them. Both these women are portrayed as highly powered (Mrs Cunningham clearly is the person who runs the house and Virginia is the one who goes out to Brenner without consulting Victor) and are independent of their distant husbands. These women enforce the conformity on their kids that was forced onto them, never actually learning their lesson or trying to make a better life for their kids.

And as we see El after leaving NINA has her rose shirt. She's now becoming fully aware she doesn't need Mike and she's so much more dissatisfied with him after the confession. I mean she's literally pinned up against the rose door during it, can they even get more obvious?

A few things that raise suspicion that some kind of foul play was at hand (only listing things that have been confirmed by multiple sources, police reports, taped records, etc):

Kurt Cobain did a huge (allegedly very lethal) amount of heroin, then shot himself, which is not only extremely rare - the two acts in combination, I mean - but also pretty hard to do

His heroin paraphernalia was neatly packed away in its box after he injected himself with an absolutely massive dose of heroin

His sleeves were rolled down (I believe)

The gun casing was on the wrong side

Someone had slashed the tyres on Kurt Cobain's car

The suicide note reads much more like a letter of resignation to fans, except for the part in what looks a lot like different handwriting

Their lawyer and family friend, Rosemary Carroll, confirmed on tape that Courtney Love had a bag with a handwriting practice sheet in it

Courtney Love called in the police report to say he was missing but gave Kurt Cobain's mum's name, not her own (the policeman, Terry O'Connor maybe, who she named in the report and was friends with, was later killed in one of the only fatal police shootings in Seattle at that time)

Kurt is confirmed to have spoken to Cali, the nanny and ex-boyfriend of Courtney Love who was living in the house at the time, and his girlfriend, yet this was never mentioned by Courtney Love, who exchanged several phone calls with Cali

Cali's girlfriend, Jessica Hopper, left in a hurry and vomited in the driveway on her way out

Cali left a really suss note on the stairs at this time - worth a read

Cali was immediately sent to LA to go to rehab on Courtney Love's dime

Kurt Cobain's friend, Dylan Carlson, who bought the gun, also received a lot of money from Courtney Love

Courtney Love knew the coroner who did the autopsy (he also fled across the country and died in some weird base jumping accident, though I am guessing this was just a coincidence)

Kurt was planning to quit Nirvana, potentially losing millions of dollars in the process

Kurt had contacted their lawyer about getting a divorce around two weeks before his death: Courtney Love stood to lose millions if they divorced as they had a pre-nup. With his death, she inherited half his estate and was set for life

Courtney Love lied about Rome - she described a suicide note, but then also said that it was about getting a divorce

After leaving rehab, Kurt Cobain actually tried to contact Courtney Love at her hotel, and also spoke to other people - he was not, in any real sense, missing

Punk rocker El Duce claimed that Courtney Love offered him 50,000 dollars to kill Kurt Cobain - El Duce was one crazy dude, but his story was corroborated by the owner of the Rock Shop, where it was alleged to have happened, and El Duce also passed a lie detector test (again, not proof, but an indication of some kind)

El Duce let slip the name 'Allen' to a BBC documentary maker, Nick Broomfield. Then, not long after, in a local interview (available online), he said the name Allen Wrench, one of his good friends

I believe the next day, El Duce was dead, decapitated by a train after allegedly falling asleep on a train track. Confirmed as the last person to see him alive: Allen Wrench

Allen Wrench then got a Lexus, a new recording studio and toured Europe with his low-grade band

Kristen Pfaff, who was rumoured to be in love with Kurt Cobain and who had been threatened by Courtney Love in the past, soon quit Courtney Love band's Hole, where she had been the bassist. She returned home to get clean and rejoin her old band. She then died of a heroin overdose when she went back to Seattle to pick up her stuff. Her diary was found with the pages from the week that Kurt Cobain died ripped out.

Courtney Love recently settled a very similar case with her daughter's ex-husband, Isaiah Silva

Also, I really recommend checking out the artwork of Michael 'Cali' DeWitt, who is confirmed to have been in the house at the time of Kurt Cobain's death.

Things in favour of it being a suicide: Kurt Cobain suffered from depression, had marital problems and was having trouble trying to escape Nirvana, too.

So, you know, both options are possible, but to me one explanation explains away a lot, whereas the other one really doesn't. Kurt Cobain was certainly prone to erratic behaviour and depression, but Courtney Love shaped the narrative of a suicidal person before, during and after this period to such an extent that it made it extremely hard for most people to look at the case objectively - from the very first instant, with Rome, the missing person report filed under a false name and other police incidents, people were led to look at the case in a particular way that may not have been wholly accurate.

At the very least, I believe that people who ask some questions should not be dismissed out of hand.

Jack and Eleven, the tropes of the evil and monstrous children.

I need an AU world where Jack from "Supernatural" and Eleven from "Stranger Things" meet and they are like that Ben Affleck smoking a cigarette meme. “Stranger Things” is not over yet so I can’t draw final conclusions but it’s still fun to see the similarities and differences between these two characters born out of the creative minds of American screenwriters circa 2015-2016.

Pre-birth

So far we only know a general outline of what happened before Eleven's birth. We know that her mother was literally used for experimental purposes in Hawkins National Laboratory but there's a rather unsettling blank as to how she got pregnant. Jack’s pre-birth story can be pretty much summarized as “Lucifer was throwing a tantrum and experiencing the ups and downs of having god-complex problems when your father is the literal God”. While we're not showed Jack's actual birth, we unfortunately see the moment before conception, a moment of deception and abuse to the detriment of his mother. Additionally, both Jack and his mother are referred as one famous pair: Rosemary complete with the baby. I hope this was a non-subtle way with which the writers wanted to signal us the underlying abuse but I have my doubts.

The mothers

Terry Ives and Kelly Kline have been violently abused, period. Terry’s story is perhaps even more tragic because of the sufferings she had to endure during her “participation” in the MKUltra Project. Kelly suffered severe trauma during her pregnancy and died after giving birth to Jack. Terry tried to get her daughter back (she was likely taken away from her after birth) only to be restrained and removed from the facility. She's still alive but in a catatonic state and we don't yet know if it was induced nor what happened after she got thrown out of the laboratory.

The fathers

Both Jack and Eleven have multiple father-figures. Jack’s biological father is the President of the United States possessed by Lucifer while his putative father is Castiel. Eleven’s biological father is unknown so far but who she considered as her “Papa” while she was a kid was Doctor Brenner. Her putative father is Jim Hopper. In this respect, Supernatural writers were bolder because Jack explicitly states that his father is Castiel, not Lucifer. Although they didn’t pick up on that in season 14, it still was something quite powerful that briefly broke from the never-ending “I am your father” reveals that perpetuate ancient-as-fuck theories about the predominance of the biological father in the formation of the subject. This doesn’t happen in “Stranger Things” and unfortunately I think we’ll have an “I am your father” reveal in season 5 which bleah ( I dream of a day where screenwriters will break from the "Star Wars" spell, guys you need to move on, there is a life to live, bikes to ride, roads to walk, sunsets to enjoy. LET.GO.).  Both Lucifer and Doctor Brenner are the bad and evil fathers, while Castiel and Hopper are both PTSD-suffering former soldiers who… let’s say they try to do their best to be the protective caring fathers.

The birth

We don’t yet know much about Eleven’s birth but we’ve partially seen it from her point of view (that was a ballsy, fantastic move, well done to “Stranger Things” doing proper homework on trauma). Jack’s birth, on the other hand, checks all the boxes of the birth of the “monster” as “prodigy”: massive power outage, a rift between worlds was opened, the usual.  Unlike Eleven, Jack is… a bit “different” because he is both angel and human so he gets to grow up super-fast after his birth.

The training

They both get some training to do because people want them to use their power to open a gate into a different dimension. In Eleven’s case things are way more awful, she didn’t get the Sam-Winchester-weak-ass training of moving pencils and talk about feelings, she was literally used as lab rat by Doctor Brenner stripped of her identity, branded with a 011 and even her name, Jane, was changed into said number. However, Jack did end up in the other dimension he had opened the rift to, got captured, maybe tortured (?) and eventually found himself to fight in a random war he had nothing to do with. So, you know. They eventually both grow up as...

The weapon

Both characters are compared to weapons multiple times in their respective shows.

The loss of powers

Both Eleven and Jack lose their powers at some point.  While Eleven has to re-start her traumatizing and abusive training sessions with Doctor Brenner, Jack does… whatever the hell they made him do it, i.e. the usual cannibalization of other angels’ grace etc. (which, to the writers' credit, is still thematic since the random war he was fighting was against the same angel he ended up cannibalizing, everything works in full circle etc etc).

The underground

Although in Jack’s case it wasn’t intentional (since the bunker already existed well before his birth), both characters are raised in an underground, hospital/military-like facility.

The performance

They both perform a “normal” persona for other people’s benefit. In Jack’s case, this persona is an infantilized, less-threatening version of himself. Eleven, on the other hand, performs femininity: in each season there are different people who put make-up on her face and who give her different styles of clothing and hairstyles. In season 4 she lies to Mike and pretends to be a popular girl in school who has a lot of friends while, in reality, she gets violently bullied by her peers. And this leads to…

The sacrifice

People rely on their power to solve problems or they’re too concerned with the way they decide to use their own power. It seems that everybody agrees that said power should be used for “good” but recoil when accidents happen or when both Jack and Eleven end up using their power for somethig less... “good”. This results in both characters having heart-breaking self-sacrificing tendencies, they seem themselves as monsters who need to prove themselves worthy of the human status. They sense when people who’re supposed to love them are scared of them and it makes them want to become "better" or more like "everybody else". I said heart-breaking because, while it may be a tiny bit less obvious in Jack’s case, it’s strikingly and visibly evident in Eleven’s story that theirs is the realest tragic story ever, the story of the children who get sacrificed for the" greater good" (I am, once again, begging storytellers to change this narrative, it can be done, the world will not end, I personally promise). She's got the weight of the world on her shoulders and people have these huge expectations of her ability to save them from evil and death while she's just this tiny, abused, traumatized and scared child. I don't know, man. My heart cries when I see certain scenes, I can't take them anymore.

The trauma

Eleven manages to “relive” her past and see it for what it is in all its horror. This allows her to break free from her evil father’s leash and see what he has really done to her (although more is to come for sure but she’s on an interesting journey of self-discovery). Jack, on the other hand, doesn’t get to break free from his trauma. He tries to find meaning by visiting his biological past in the shape of his maternal grandparents but there’s nothing for him there. Maybe his trauma is that he never was a child, he was forced to grow up too soon and, even though he’s the most powerful being on earth, he’s still also a human who has the right to go through all human experiences.

Friends

The second thing that set them aside the most is the presence/absence of friends. Eleven’s got quite a few of them and this is especially important to her growth. It’s not just about her family, it’s about an extended system of support who cares about her. Jack, on the other hand, sadly doesn’t have the same support.

I think I could go on forever but I’ll stop here to reflect on how Jack is mostly framed as “evil” while Eleven is almost always compared to a “monster”. Jack's story is very much tied up to morality while Eleven's to deviancy and craziness. They’re both presented as white, able-bodied, young humans who have “something” inside of them that makes them different. People around them are very quick to pick up that “different” vibe but very few people are willing to go beyond and look at the constant trauma that is their life. I think that Jack’s story doesn’t ultimately end well for him so I really, really hope the same won’t happen to Jane/Eleven.

) called will their cleric. how vecna's curse is literally necromancy in the form of draining a person's life force and how henry should have died from the radiation burns he got traveling between dimensions or disintegrated like jason was by the gate opening in the creel house but didn't because he just necromanced like thirty people. and how the mindflayer isn't actually a mind flayer but a tool and the physical representation of the hivemind that henry is the brain of as the actual dnd mind flayer and so henry is a paradox in that he is both the mind flayer and the undead (lich? zombie? both? who knows!) that can resist the mind flayer's thrall oops i started reading about thralls and having revelations

billy was DEFINITELY a thrall, and will was well on his way before being blasted out of it by the power of love and seventy space heaters. i think the shadow is like a physical representation of the thrall and plugs you into the telepathic network and is also possible to expell Like A Demon so they could do a quasi-thrall that was reversible?

the rest of the flayed in season 3 i think were somewhere between ceremorphs and (reverse?) oblexes? possibly because ceremorphs henry wasn't really looking to make more mind flayers and ceremorphs ? he was just looking to kill? the hive mind. let me be coherent in a different paragraph (although i will say oblexes were introduced just over a year before season 3 came out as the creation of a make-a-wish kid and thus the similarities might've been a happy coincidence)

ceremorphs. illithid tadpoles injected into beings to eat their brains and take over their bodies and either become mind flayers themselves or become some other ceremorphized being that either was a subset of the hivemind to boost psionic ability or to find new victims to become food/members or other stuff idk etc, or in special cases becoming a being powerful enough to split from the control of the elder brain and start their own colony. the flayed in s3 get their faces sucked by tentacles a lot like will in s1, when the tadpoles were first deposited. they certainly look like corpses whose brains are currently being devoured from the inside.

anyway i don't think henry was particularly looking to make more mind flayers at this time partially from his fixation on el and will and also thinking pretty much the entire planet isn't worth it and they don't deserve the power and are better off as food and then as a biomass in his meatflayer that we still don't really know the end goal for? and so their orders were to munch the brains and then destroy the host body! yummy chemicals! the meatflayer ALSO could've been his attempt at literally physically creating his own elder brain. tadpoles plus nutrients plus hivemind shadow particles plus biomass? all the makings of a big ole brain ready to stew in some brine in a deep dark cave with lots of tunnels oh yeah that's why they were digging the tunnels

also btw besides ceremorphs a super rare tadpole will birth a super powerful mind flayer whose job it is to split the colony and move somewhere else and to become a new elder brain :)

Just started thinking of the stranger things gang going to see Cats. Who do you think drives them there, Steve, Joyce or Hopper? Whose idea do you think it was to go, Eddie or El? What do you think each person's opinions of the show are?

so i firmly believe that because Steve's parents are Rich Assholes, they got tickets to the opening night of Cats on Broadway, as well as a super exclusive and fancy after-party, and took Steve along with them, and seeing Terrence Mann as Tugger is what made him realize that oh, he liked both girls AND guys (yes i'm projecting shhhhh)

so he'd absolutely jump at the chance to take his lil found family to see the show, as a lil "hey we survived the apocalypse!!!" celebration like a year or two after the final Vecna confrontation, and Joyce and Hopper immediately agree.

El absolutely adores the show, and was fully sobbing during the reprise of "Memory" (because... come on...)

I feel like the older kids know why Cats is important to Steve, but none of them have seen/listened to it, but as soon as Eddie sees Tugger's number, he sort of gets an "oh... oh..." moment, and that's what leads him and Steve to finally telling each other how they feel.

Mike's one of the people who hates Cats for no reason other than "ughhh it doesn't have a plot and it's creepy"

Will probably loves the costume design, Lucas thinks the dancing is cool, Dustin's definitely obsessed with the lighting and little tricks, and Max is stubborn but she absolutely also got teary during "Memory".

Meanwhile Robin's just staring at all the pretty ladies in cat costumes and whacking Steve after the show because how DARE he keep this from her for so long!!!

and absolutely as soon as the 1998 movie was released, Steve bought a copy and had a lil watch party, and his lil celebrity crush on Terrence Mann was completely shifted to John Partridge and he absolutely was swooning during Tugger's song.

(also i'm thinking about Eddie singing Misto's song to Steve and doing the soft adoring voice that JP does after Deut's brought back and holy SHIT i'm emotional)

but i feel like, as a whole, the Party likes the show! After Steve, El's definitely the one who loves it the most, and Robin and Eddie after, mainly because of Steve's connection to it, and they just think the actors are all stupidly attractive.
