At no point in these 10 years, was I aware that the context of this gif is that he is flirting with Roscoe Arbuckle's character in drag.. and It Goes On

IT WAS 1918. Literally literally at this moment, Siegfried Sassoon is writing plausibly deniable yearning poetry in another damp French trench. Meanwhile, in sunny ~SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA~, Arbuckle and Keaton are mooning around mouthing their fingers at each other for the camera.

This Day in Buster…August 19, 1917

The Statesman Journal reports that Roscoe Arbuckle, Al St John & Buster Keaton are real patriots, with the former buying up $50k in Liberty Loan war bonds to fund the war effort.  Only Buster would end up at the front, although he described it as ‘the back’.
