50 Days of HypnoKink - Day 49: Hypno in Media

My heavens... we made it to the finish line. Tomorrow is the final day.

I wanted to save an obvious one for the end because I do so enjoy MC in fiction so very much. So much, in fact, that I made a Twitter thread with 110 recommendations and never even came close to emptying my resources.

I know so many of these scenes, both that Twitter thread and this page are skimming the surface.

I'll be using some of those recommendations here but let's divide by category:

Film

So let's get the obvious out of the way. You have

Trance

A Danny Boyle thriller with a terrible plot and Rosario Dawson as a hypnotherapist trying to get hidden information from James McAvoy's mind. Silly movie but one that doesn't get brought up a lot. Dawson learned hypnosis to get into the role.

Candyman

Horror movie in which the director literally hypnotized the actress so any time she was being stalked by the titular killer she looked completely entranced. Link above is an interview discussing this.

Hypnotic

HORRIBLE movie on Netflix but Sleepyhead and I have hosted a number of watch parties and let me tell you, this is the PERFECT movie to watch with a bunch of rowdy hypnokinksters. The therapist is unethical to a laughable degree and his office looks like it's inside of the Death Star. He's a living breathing red flag. The movie does have a really hot freeze scene, a good ragdoll and the dollification sequence. It's just enjoyable because it's terrible. Check CWs first though, this movie has a bunch of things that can make it an uncomfortable viewing experience.

The Great Hypnotist

This is a Not For Daja movie. A Chinese movie that doesn't get brought up a lot. Like Trance above it is a thriller with some twists and turns that I don't really want to spoil.

Stir of Echoes

A visualization of a dissociation induction designed to make a person view events on a screen so they are separate from the memory. It's a remarkably well done scene.

Now You See Me 1/2

The hypnosis in these movies is STUPID and I love it. The first movie has a punchline that every time Mark Rufallo's character makes a frustrated comment people who Woody Harrelson has hypnotized will start acting as if they're in an orchestra. Second movie has a twin Woody Harrelson as an evil hypnotist and he uses a pizza box as an evil induction. It's amazing.

Sherlock Holmes Woman in Green

This induction is one of the coolest I've seen in a film and I try my hardest to channel the energy of this when I am doing a relaxation focused scene.

TV

Charlies Angels

This is bar none my favorite hypnosis scene in any fiction. The typewriter induction is amazing, the hypnotist has such a smooth voice, the entranced gazes are lovely. It's just perfect. Heck, the link above is "hypnosis scenes" from the episode and is 26 minutes long. From a single episode of television.

Doctor Who

Sarah Jane gets hypnotized so often that I could make a list purely from her.

Legion

I just wanna link this one as it's one of those scenes that works so much better without context and the aesthetics are incredible. Plus who doesn't like Aubrey Plaza?

Nyx do incredible games which are designed to hypnotize the viewer and their consent practices are wonderful. They recently teamed up with Secret Subject to release a vampire enthrallment game and let me tell you, there is not a single word in that synopsis that doesn't make me happy.

Mind Melting Massaging Machine

The best tool for VR hypnosis. Upload custom files and program spirals, subliminals and chose between static spiral or headtracking. I have had so much fun with this over the years. There's a desktop version too but VR is optimal for this experience.

Spiral Clicker

It's such a simple concept. Click on the character and watch their will go away. Spiral Clicker is backed with a fun little universe, fun characters both original and community sourced, amazing art and a clever little gameplay loop that is quite addictive. Careful, the game features a constant spiral, you may find yourself falling in to trance. Don't worry. The game will wake you up. You can even ask the game to include suggestions for you :)

The sequel is being worked upon now and I cannot wait <3

15 anime to watch in October oooo

Here is my list of some nice anime shows with some scary elements that you could watch around Halloween time :3

I’m only gonna include shows I’ve personally seen and completed, and not including movies.

In no particular order:

- Ghost Stories

This works both dubbed or subbed, but dubbed would be better. U can watch these kids solve ghost mysteries with their possessed kitty

- Hell Girl

You can stop after episode one cause it gets repetitive. It has all these characters sacrifice themselves to hell for eternity over the most minor inconveniences, but there’s a creepy schoolgirl with black hair and red eyes so thats good.

- Blood+

Nice anime that will give u 2006 adult swim nostalgia (if u were around back then)

- Tokyo Ghoul

But skip the anime and just read the manga

- Mononoke

Short horror anime with a unique art style :3

- D Grayman

A shonen jump show with some goth-y and spooky vibes

- Another

I found it to be mid, but it works for Halloween time cause it’s a mystery horror anime.

- Higurashi

This one is a fucked up gore-y mystery with some best girls. I think it’s one of the most successfully done horror anime.

- Mermaid Forest

It’s a mermaid horror anime. But I recommend the manga especially, it’ll give u Rumiko Takahashi’s art with creepy episodic mysteries

- Rosario Vampire

This ones kind of trash but hey

It has lots of different monsters and some best girls like Mizore and Kurumu >:)

- Soul Eater

Super Halloween aesthetic

- Monster

Watch because it’s a creepy mystery and has a main antagonist that terrifies people.

- School-Live

Good anime with zombies and some psychological stuff

- Death Note

Death Note is best anime. It’s very aesthetic and it has shinigami, an unstable traumatized girl who will do anything for her love interest, and a boy with messy black hair and dark eye circles.

- Vampire Knight

This one’s a shojo anime with vampires that aged not so well. But it has vampires and scary elements, plus will give off a 2008 emo fujoshi mood :3

Obsessed part 1

Vampire!Shaun x Reader x Incubus!Joseph - Rosario + Vampire AU (kind of)

Shaun didn’t like you socializing - like at all. Call it his jealous friend era, or maybe the fear of you getting found out as human and having your precious blood his new friend getting taken away from him by The Faculty was eating up at him, but something about this new …fella… hanging around you seemed off.

He went by Joseph Haberdae. A new freshman. Brunette, fairly hunky, and always wore those nearly unbuttoned dress shirts that made way to a decently scruffy set of pecs. Plus, a little mole in the corner of his eye. 

So obviously, he held no candle to Shaun.

After your little arrangement had been made and he started taking your blood, Shaun made it a point to accompany you to classes so his scent can mask yours. And there was an unspoken agreement among the students on campus to keep away from you so as to not anger the “fearsome and totally powerful” vampire. Though it seemed Joseph hadn’t gotten the memo.

It had started when Shaun had been walking you to class, same as always, and once you turned the corner, all the books had practically been knocked out of your hands.

“Oh gosh, I’m so sorry!” Joseph said, “I hope I didn't hurt you.” 

You were quick to wave it off, smiling goodnaturedly, “These things happen, don’t worry about it.”

“Well, at least let me help carry your things! It’d be such a hassle to get them up all on your own.”

“Sure, I’ll help you.” You replied.

He made a show of scrambling to get your books, brushing your hand every now and again then retracting it like he touched hot water. Shaun just stood by awkwardly observing the sudden scrimmage. Like, was he just not here or…?

You had gotten up and gave him a sour look. “Don’t rush to help or anything like that, Shaun.” You snapped.

He simply put his hands up in defense, “Don’t look at me, you and Brownie had it.”

“It’s Joseph,” He said stonily.

Shaun gives a fake sweet smile, “Alright then, Joseph. Don’t you have somewhere to be? Maybe a class to get to or-”

“Oh, that’s right! I’m still sort of new here and I can’t seem to find my way to classes…You’d help me, right?”

“Of course!” You replied instantly.

Though as the two of you walked on, completely disregarding Shaun, he couldn’t help but place the distinct scent of caramel in the air.

There wasn’t one place you went where Joseph hadn’t followed. Walking you to class became a consistent thing, and soon after he was studying, going to the library and even attending lectures with you. Shaun of course accompanied you whenever he could. And when he couldn’t, he was still there (usually behind a bush or something). Though most of the time he sat idly by as you and the brunette chatted it up. He knew he had no right to be jealous. It wasn’t like you two were dating or friends with benefits. But he’d just grown so accustomed to you being by his side that the thought of anybody else around drove him nuts!

Was that possessive? Whatever.

One night you all headed to your dorm building after another “study session” (it was just Joseph tittering about how hard classes were while you did his work). 

“Thanks again for helping me with my homework.” Joseph said.

“Oh, it’s no trouble. Shaun is pretty much my personal tutor so I know that stuff by the letter.” You replied.

“That so? Maybe I should get some pointers from him too…”

Oh God, kill him now.

“Also, if you don’t mind, could I walk you up to your room?”

You blinked and rubbed your arm, “Oh! Uh…sure, if you’d like.”

“Great, because there’s something I really need to talk to you about… alone.” 

“‘Kay. Shaun could you…?”

Shaun shrugged and put some carefree energy into his voice, “Don’t worry about it, I’ve gotta head to my apartment anyway.”

In a puff of smoke he turns into a bat and flies off.

“So, a vampire, huh?” Joseph said.

“Sure is! But uh, don’t tell anyone. It’s against school rules.” You said, putting a finger to your lips. 

Joseph smiles and mimics your gesture, “Secrets’ safe with me.”

Shaun crawls above your dorm building, hovering over your window, just low enough to get a peek inside without being discovered. Soon enough, You and Joseph entered. Using his powers - he listened through the window.

“I had fun tonight,” Joseph said.

“If doing homework is your idea of fun, I’d hate to see what boring is.” You replied.

“No, of course not. Spending time with you was the fun part!”

You lightly shove him with a smile, “Aw, you’re such a softie sometimes!”

“I mean it, I’d like to hang out with you again,” Joseph takes a step closer, taking your hand in his, “but next time I’d like it to be more than just a study date.”

“Wow so…a date date?”

“You like me don’t you?”

“Yeah, of course!”

“And…you’d do anything for me, right?”

As you're about to answer, that familiar scent of caramel comes back. Shaun smells it through the window!

You finally answer, but your voice is monotonous, “Yes.”

Joseph grins wolfishly, stroking a hand along your chin, “Sooo, if I asked you to ditch that vampire tomorrow for a nice dinner date would you do it?”

“Yes.” 

What the fuck!?

“Perfect. So that’s at five on the dot at the diner a few blocks from campus. Get plenty of rest.” He instructs before giving you a chaste kiss on the lips. You don’t move all the while, only staring ahead like a zombie.

“See you there, doll.” He whispers.

Shaun sits dumbfounded at the window, not even bothering to move as you robotically retire to your bed. And he doesn’t miss Joseph smirk at him once he leaves.

All these potential bombs are getting defused, so why do I not feel relieved?

I've made this comparison before, but I came to this story expecting another Rosario Plus Vampire. Nothing against that show. I watched at least a few arcs and enjoyed them. ("Know your place" as comedy morphing into "know your place" as "I will protect you" T_T)

But even with Caim Camui, even with Crocell's crush on Iruma, EVEN WITH THE CROSS DRESSING JOKES

...M!K is still an entirely different type of story. Evidenced partly by Caim getting some character development, Crocell being more than a one note character, and the cross dressing shading into gender presentation fluidity.

And, you know, everything positive about the series.

Iruma going from "can't say no spider sense protag" to a guy with a social circle, an ambition, and self confidence... I was not expecting it and, I loved to see it.

And, as my hopes were raised, I started wondering how the climax would play out. There are any number of emotional bombs the author could drop.

Except... the bombs keep getting defused.

Iruma gets revealed as a human to his friends?

Asmodeus and Clara already know he has secrets.

Iruma learns that Narnia wants to murder him and Kirio wants to eat him?

He already knows.

The teachers figure out his identity?

Balam is one of his staunchest allies, and Kalego is going way out of his way to maintain plausible deniability.

So, if none of those are going to be the big emotional moment of the story's climax...

Okay so Yes she is crazy, and she has a justifiable backstory for it.

The manga version is 100% better at explaining it. If you get a chance read the manga. (The anime was turned into a pure fanservice mess. The manga shifts to become an intense thriller with complex character motivations and drama)

But yea, I had a MASSIVE crush on Mizore, and yes I’m aware that breaking her heart is dangerous… but I’d be lying if I said I wouldn’t risk it.

Plus she mellows out later and even was on board with the idea of a harem during a chapter (that was a more comedic chapter but it made me laugh)

Voiceplay Visuals: My Mother Told Me

This video was released on the 24th of April, 2021, and currently sits at a very-impressive 6.7 million views! It features Jose Rosario Jr (in his first collabration with Voiceplay (on a full-length video at least)), who for a few years performed with Rockapella! (Rockapella is an acapella group who have been around for over 35 years, they were part of the OG Where In The World Is Carmen Sandiego show, and they were a bit of an inspiration to Voiceplay (originally 4:2:Five) in their early days).

I wasn't actually sure whether or not this video would give me a lot of moments to point out/talk about (it's been a while since the last time I watched it), but it's obviously a big production (epic, even), and I will undoubtedly be talking about its "sister video", Valhalla Calling, when I eventually get around to it, so long story short, I'm doing this. Let's go!

Each vocalist got filmed separately for this one, each with their own backdrop (and then were all spliced together for "group shots" in the video), so each member gets their own picture when I'm talking about them in this post!

Jose is wearing some textured blanket-looking thing, plus a plain brown shirt/tunic, and he's got a pair of blueish lines on his face that almost look a little bit like scars. He's standing in front of a sort of desert plains landscape, maybe with some large red mountains/rock formations?

Oh yeah and also it's a little hard to see, but just at the neckline of Jose's shirt, underneath his beard, there's a cool viking(?) symbol on his neck that also shows up in Valhalla Calling (and on the merch for that video too)!

Eli appears to have a bit of dirt and grime on his skin (which would be intentional of course), as well as some cool-looking tattoos (even on his head!) (fake ones for the video of course), and some very heavy eye makeup. He's standing in front of some grass, rocky cliffs (possibly with water down below?), and sea mist

(Also Eli is credited with "virtual production" on this one, so I guess all these greenscreen backgrounds were his doing? Massive shoutout to Eli!)

J has the same symbol on his forehead that Jose had on his neck/chest, as well as some white powder-looking makeup stuff on his cheeks. No clue what kind of top/shirt that is, but I like the big fur coat, and cool arm cuff things as well! He's standing in front of a frozen (or partially-frozen) lake, with snow-covered mountains/rock formations behind it.

(Fun fact: Geoff re-used a few costume pieces from My Mother Told Me when filming the videos for his covers of Far Over The Misty Mountains Cold and I See Fire!

Layne has got a makeup design to Eli, with similiar tattoos on his face, and a bit of extra dirt/grime as well. He's got fur trimmings(?) on his shoulders like Eli, but it looks more like the fur that J is wearing. He's standing in front of wide open plains I guess? I'm not sure, I can't make out a ton of detail.

I think Layne's outfit might be my favourite one of this video; it seems the most complex, like it has the most going on with it, and I like the patterned cuff design thing on his right arm!

And I haven't forgotten Geoff, of course I haven't forgotten Geoff, and seriously oh my god

I'm honestly not sure if I could give a good description of Geoff's outfit even if I tried, but it works! (Also wait I literally only just realised that, once more, he's the only one in the video with exposed shoulders (well, one exposed shoulder, but still!))

This honestly might be one of Geoff's most terrifying looks of any Voiceplay video so far, if not the most terrifying. Vampire!Geoff in This Is Halloween was "scary" in the "yes please give me more of it" (i.e. hot) way. Oogie Boogie!Geoff in Oogie Boogie's Song was just theatrical and entertaining. Mr Hyde!Geoff in Kidnap The Sandy Claws was (to me at least) just a little bit strange and hard to wrap my head around. But Geoff here? This is "makes you want to move very quickly in the opposite direction" scary!

(So like well done to Rick Underwood on the makeup (but in regards to everyone else as well))

Jose, J, Eli, and Layne all got cool aesthetic landscapes as their backdrops. Geoff got darkness and STUFF ON FIRE (...yeah that checks out 😆)

Even the fingernails!!! Even the fingernails look like they've got grime on them! (Also, Geoff at his least-terrifying moment of the video)

Aaaand we're back to "time to run away very fast" mode!

Also did Geoff do a bit of hair colouration for this video? Because yes he's got a bit of grey in his hair now, but not that much grey, and it's not always that noticeable (though personally I do love the grey streak he often has in his bangs, it's rather fetching if I do say so myself <3)

And that's the video! Man, can you believe these are the same dudes (well except Jose) that did the Aca Top 10 videos, being all silly and fooling around? Acting skills were freaking on point here! Everyone crushed it!

It's a great arrangement as well (shoutout to Layne!). The song is actually just one single verse, which here is sung like 5 or 6 times over, but you barely even notice it (if at all) because the whole production is just so mind-blowingly good!

I also wanted to do this video because I'll be skipping over You're My Best Friend and Man In The Mirror, so this'll be the last video I'm doing where J is actually a part of the group. It was of course very sad that he left Voiceplay, but he's come back as a guest artist in like 6 full-length videos now (not even counting the minis), and hopefully he might one day return to Voiceplay full-time, once he's done with his stint in the US Navy band!

Random Fanfic Idea 2

SPOILERS FOR ROSARIO+VAMPIRE AND ASSASSINATION CLASSROOM

For people who don’t know Rosario+Vampire is my favorite manga and I really wish it was more popular. I mean it would probably be more popular if the anime had done the manga justice, it so needs the FMA Brotherhood and Fruits Basket treatment. 

But anyway, onto the actual idea. I like all of the snake imagery found with Nagisa throughout Assassination Classroom, so imagine a naga Nagisa in the story of R+V. (I know that there are no nagas in Rosario, but there is a lamia and that is good enough) 

I just love the idea as a whole because this series has so much potential with crossovers, maybe I am biased but whatever. Plus you could easily add other characters from Assassination Classroom in this case, because that would be fun. 

Sorry, crossovers are some of my favorite things to find within a fandom. What people decide to do with them is just so much fun, in this case, Rosario+Vampire deserves more fans and that is that.

I was looking up the Snowstorm, the theme song of Mizore, on Spotify and instead got a playlist of main songs in Rosario + Vampire (snowstorm isn't on there/couldn't find it). Shiroi Honoo, one of my favorite songs from the series and Kokoa's theme, is on there. I haven't heard this song in a long time, so, I went on Youtube instead because there's lyrics & translation on there, plus i'm more familiar with the version sung by the R+V seiyuu. In the comments, someone mentions that this song sounds, like, way out of place for the series and almost sounds like a Revolutionary Girl Utena song. Turns out, R+V is only covering this song and it's actually from a series called Sukeban Deka.

On Google the main girl looks. Well familiar. And then I read the plot. Kill la Kill, one of my favorite anime of all time, the entire thing is based off this series. Ryuko's design is just this main girl. The elite four. Probably waaayy more that I'm missing. And then, even funnier, apparently Sukeban Deka (70s/80s) was one of the foundational anime of its time, was responsible for the girl gang (sukeban) craze in the 80s, and it also paved the way for shows like PreCure and Revolutionary Girl Utena. That's insane considering those two shows themselves paved the way for entire genres, including in Western media. It's also insanely popular in Japan, too, so everyone who watched Kill la Kill there probably was just like "oh cool a Sukeban Deka reference". How did I just find this out in the year 2024???

Currently into all about monsters in general (insert my post about monster school shows) and it’s completely unintentional that it’s Halloween month. I’ve never really gotten the opportunity to be spooky / goth / monstery despite the fact that I’ve always wanted to so what better time than now! I love horror and the supernatural so much so I’m trying to consume as much of it as I can, I’m so fascinated by monsters :) would love any recs. I need to go through all the classic horror movies so my list is loooong but I am excited heheh <3

I don’t know if I have any favorite monsters atm… love them all!! But I don’t feel like I Know Enough to pick a favorite. I wanna deep dive all the lore (not just interested injust fictional stories but also the actual myths and legends! I really love history and how these kinds of phenomena affect humans and how humans draw inspiration from these sort of horrific ideas so I wanna know more. Humans are so fascinating. Plus these stories are just cool :P) and I wanted to write something about vampires so I have the wiki pulled up on my phone XD will say tho I super love mummy’s I think they’re so cool tuti my beloved…. Also Really love how they interpreted Frankie in monster high btw love that she’s a girl frankenstein love that she has a boyish nickname (Frankie is SUCH a good girl nickname I’ve known many Frankie’s!) love that her body falls apart, truly a classic monster trope and she’s super nice so I’m happy with her character so far :) can’t wait to watch more monster high it’s so good the designs are great the fanart is wonderful and the DOLLS ARE BEAUTIFUL!!!
