Eurovision 2002 - Number 46 - Rosa - "Hay que vivir"
youtube
For 2002 RTE had a plan. Instead of a standard, if large national final, why not merge choosing their Eurovision entrant with a new reality TV show? And lo, Operación Triunfo was born. It was a combination of the X Factor and Big Brother with the contestants themselves voting to save fellow competitors at risk each week.
Throughout the competition there had been a public favourite who was topping the vote almost every week: Rosa López. She easily made it to the final in which the three remaining contestants sang three songs, which the jury and public whittled down to a single song, then voted on their winner. Rosa won the final Gala Eurovisión with nearly 50% of the vote. It was never in question.
But she didn't win with this song. Hay que vivir (We Have to Live) was the song that was eliminated first (by the judges) of the three that Rosa sang in the final. It's a fighting-the-good-fight song. In the dark times, there is hope, struggle through and things will get better. The opening feels distinctly un-Spanish with a solo violin line. Then the acoustic guitar kicks in and we've got a warm, pop ballad that showcases Rosa's amazing voice. There are some Celtic flourishes are points, but for the most part that guitar keeps the song firmly in Iberia.
Rosa was taken to the hearts of the nation. That and the involvement of the public in selecting her over a three month period led to a massive investment of many people in Spain in the Eurovision final itself. It was the most watched final in the country ever. In fact the 2002 Eurovision Song Contest remains the most watched TV programme in the history of Spanish TV. Really.
After Eurovision Rosa started a recording career. Her first album released in 2002 went five time platinum in Spain. She also took up dance partly through taking part in the Spanish version of Strictly Come Dancing/Dancing with the Stars - which of course she won with an even bigger percentage of the public vote than she'd won Operación Triunfo with. She loved dance so much she became the nominated candidate to take Spain's place in the second Eurovision Dance Contest in 2008, but she had to pull out before the competition.
Rosa López has been Spain's sweetheart now for two decades and she's still making music. Her most recent album was released this year. Here's a track from that album Señales, Puertas Abiertas

A reminder, scores go from 1 to 7 and then 10. Jury do not need to justify their scores and the guess judge do not cast a vote.
Roberto: ... among those 4 people we have tonight’s gala winner (17.02.2023). And there’s one who steps down the podium at this moment, and is going to accompany me. Jorge Lorenzo come with me
Boris: (J)orge
Mariló: oy, oy oy  *expression of incredulity*
Rosa: come on boy (this one is a maybe because I don’t hear it properly)
Roberto: Jorge Lorenzo, let’s remind not an easy challenge driving/piloting a dron through a complicated route. How did the jury assess it? It is in here.
Boris: Oh my God (He says it in English)
Roberto: 14
Boris: Super Jorge
Roberto: How do you see it?
Jorge: Logic, logic
Roberto: enough? Do you like it?
Jorge: I thought I was going before (Lower score) Boris
Rosa: is very difficult
Jorge: but due to the mistake. I had that mistake that would hade meant to do it perfectly. And in my opinion, Laura deserves to win the contest not with a 10, but with an 11
Rosa she is just repeating very difficult as Jorge is talking. The 3 of them. Guau
Jorge: but it was that mistake. I’d like for them to control the dron to know the difficulty it has, but from the outside it seems easier than what it is.
Roberto: well, Santiago did said that... he tried it in his own skin (this makes reference to Santiago trying the dron before the program and having troubles. He himself admitted that is more difficult than it looks like) *Santiago nods in confirmation*
Pilar: I want to say something Roberto. Look at it Boris’ challenge and Jorge Lorenzo’s one looks to me equally complicated
Roberto: yes
Pilar: but I saw show in Boris’ one. I saw challenge and I saw show, that is something I missed from Jorge Lorenzo.
Jorge mumbles something, maybe he tries to explain why didn’t he make a show out of piloting/driving a dron
Pilar: that’s why the score are like that (She gave her 5 to Boris and a 4 to Jorge)
Boris: let’s say Jorge’s was more active
Jorge: sports-like
Boris: masculine
Jorge: and you’re a showman/yours a showman
Boris: and mine was more glamour
Mariló: he loves it
Jorge, Roberto and Boris laugh
Mariló: he is flirting with Jorge
More laughs from Jorge, Rosa and Roberto
Mariló: he is between 2 Jorges/going from 1 Jorge to the other (Jorge Blanco is the one wearing black pants)
Boris: how divine Pilar. I completely agree
Roberto: there are the 14 for Jorge Lorenzo
Boris: Bravo
Roberto: Be careful...
This is the 6th gala scores for all contestants
Tumblr media
For today’s gala, Rosa is challenged with the apnea, and Jorge is going to do Film’s percussion. He will play with orchestra the melody from Back to the future.
Tumblr media
This is how the board is looking after 6 galas. Jorge is in 3rd position, 13 points behind Laura Escanes and 6 from Ana Guerra. Jorge Blanco is 10 behind him. Laura seems to be very far, and has won 2 galas, but to be honest, she is pretty inconsistent (so does Jorge Blanco). Jorge’s real competition is Ana Guerra. Ana’s worst score was a 14 and Jorge got twice a 12. Jorge is being pretty consistent so far.
Tumblr media
This is a scoring summary of all the galas. Pink indicates the loser of the gala, the one with the least amount of point, while the green indicates who was the winner.

A Los Angeles Theatre Review: 'Ghost Waltz'
You can consider yourself fortunate when you watch good theatre that has meaningful diversity. But it’s not often that you come across a piece that enthralls you completely from beginning to end that when it’s over, you immediately wish for it to be seen all over the country, in both big and small theatres alike. Such is the case for the world premiere of Ghost Waltz at the Latino Theater…

It’s mostly safe. Between 1:09 and 1:33 there’s a slow-Mo of Jorge moving and setting the torches on fire with his own body.
Roberto:Let’s take a bit of air as the team also does the cleaning/removing of all the torches and we lower the heart beat (he uses turn them back on place)
Mariló: Jorge guy (in surprise/disbelieve)
Roberto: a big (gigantic) applause for Jorge Lorenzo
Jorge and Pedro talk but is not cached by the microphone.
Rosa: you can see the back he has burned it. Damn it!.
Roberto: let’s turn him around as it was suggested by his coach Pedro, so we ha can see how Jorge Lorenzo’s back looks like. Jorge. We where saying 30 seconds
Juan: To 0
Roberto:...and 0
Juan: to 0
Roberto: you’ve gone to the limit
Jorge: (Jorge is barely making sense in Spanish, probably still shaky from the experience) No.. one can get used to.. they are always... when you have the fire... in the back, in the back... You want to go as fast as you can, but I had to be precises, and wait 2-3 seconds. It was difficult, but... everything went well
Boris: very well, extraordinarily well
Jorge: I was feeling very hot, but I don’t think I got burned, but we will check later but
Other contestant: you are incredible.
Boris: you are the king
Roberto: let’s see you never better said. Look at yourself in the slow-Mo cam. The very slow one.
Jorge: I never watched myself Damn it! (I’m not sure, but I think Jorge says ‘Que putada’ which could be interpreted and how insane, but music is too low for me to understand it properly
Roberto: well *without words* all yours
Juan: For moments like, I believe that this programme is the best in the TV (someone said arghsi in complain) because in here, there’s an emotion and tension eh enormous.
Jorge: I did well in taking this off (? what is he talking about? The balaclava?)
Juan: and we feel it like this from here. Congratulations Jorge for the temperance of stopping to set all the torches on fire. For me it’s a challenge, with this I always have an small argument with Santiago, it’s a challenge that enraptures me and I think it holds lots of credits just for trying to do it. (Pilar(?) says yes). Congratulation.
Jorge: thanks!
Pilar: I’m going to congratulate Jorge and I’m going to give a small scold/reprimand to the program in general. Let’s see, on each side, we had 15 torches. 15 torches  and we said he needed about.. that he could only stay 30 seconds with the suit (Waru’s note, Jorge said 2-3 seconds per torch and it was 15 torches per side, so he actually needed 30-45. Conclusion: it was a miracle he managed to complete the challenge). He only has 2 seconds per torch (Waru’s note (again) this considering that each torch at each side is lit at the same time and easily). You gone a little on the limit (Waru’s note (again) this is like going to Austria with normal brake disc and expect that nothing happen (reference to Race 2 in Austria in 2020 and Maverick Viñales). Poor Jorge ,Poor Jorge
Jorge: Knowing... I don’t know my time.
Someone: guy  it was 30 seconds
Pilar: this was was very extreme
Santiago: Pilar
Pilar: no, no, no
Santiago: to defend the programme, I’ll tell you that the torches where covered with a flammable liquid and I don’t think that the precision was so good
Pilar: would you be able to do this?
Santiago: for me it was more difficult, what Rosa López did
Rosa: no way
Santiago eating the plastic with the teeth upside down (she and Ana Guerra had to scape from the plastic covering the torso while being upside down at 6m of high and then jump) than what Jorge (driving a 3000kg truck over a 8m long line of glasses) and Jorge (this challenge)
rosa *laughs* no
Roberto: if anybody understands about fires in this table, it’s Roberto Brasero
Brasero (invited judge. He had his own challenge that does is not in contest. He usually is the weatherman for Antena3, the channel where El Desafío is broadcast). No, you went for a walk of 400ºC, as you told us. In here, you can also smell it because people from home can’t smell it. The smell of burning of petrol/gasoline, that you felt so many times. I think that apart from the physical abilities, it had a mental component your ... moment as a rider,
Jorge: yeah, totally
Brasero: I suppose it was one of your nightmares, seeing yourself engulfed in flames and it this case, you have surpassed it. And I’ll only say something to you, the hood goes directly to the trash. Do not try to
Jorge, that’s for sure
Rosa: look, it’s cool
Roberto: Well, Jorge Lorenzo, challenge completed, we will see ho the jury will asses it later. You can go calmly there, (signals one side), they are saying there (shows the other way) But before, go there and change (and that we see is... announcing the next challenge and contestant)

Cose Olimpiche
Legni: Sono 25 i quarti posti nelle competizioni olimpiche dell’Italia.

9 QTPoC books for your 2023 Pride Month TBR
Happy Pride Month! Every year, I do a little round-up of YA books starring LGBTQ and BIPOC characters that have come out so far this year. This year was particularly exciting -- there were so many books that I loved or have at the very top of my TBR! So, without further ado, here's 9 of them for your TBR!
The Wicked Bargain by Gabe Cole Novoa El Diablo is in the details in this Latinx pirate fantasy starring a transmasculine nonbinary teen with a mission of revenge, redemption, and revolution.
On Mar León-de la Rosa's 16th birthday, el Diablo comes calling. Mar is a transmasculine nonbinary teen pirate hiding a magical ability to manipulate fire and ice. But their magic isn't enough to reverse a wicked bargain made by their father and now el Diablo has come to collect his payment: the soul of Mar's father and the entire crew of their ship. When Mar is miraculously rescued by the sole remaining pirate crew in the Caribbean, el Diablo returns to give them a choice: give up your soul to save your father by the Harvest Moon or never see him again. The task is impossible--Mar refuses to make a bargain and there's no way their magic is any match for el Diablo. Then, Mar finds the most unlikely allies: Bas, an infuriatingly arrogant and handsome pirate -- and the captain's son; and Dami, a genderfluid demonio whose motives are never quite clear. For the first time in their life, Mar may have the courage to use their magic. It could be their only redemption -- or it could mean certain death.

Finding home. Falling in love. Fighting to belong. The Santos Vista neighborhood of San Antonio, Texas, is all Ander Martínez has ever known. The smell of pan dulce. The mixture of Spanish and English filling the streets. And, especially their job at their family's taquería. It's the place that has inspired Ander as a muralist, and, as they get ready to leave for art school, it's all of these things that give them hesitancy. That give them the thought, are they ready to leave it all behind?
To keep Ander from becoming complacent during their gap year, their family "fires" them so they can transition from restaurant life to focusing on their murals and prepare for college. That is, until they meet Santiago López Alvarado, the hot new waiter. Falling for each other becomes as natural as breathing. Through Santi's eyes, Ander starts to understand who they are and want to be as an artist, and Ander becomes Santi's first steps toward making Santos Vista and the United States feel like home. And when, eventually, the world starts to win.

Things are heating up between them, and not just in the kitchen. As the competition intensifies, Shireen will have to ignore all these factors and more― including potential sabotage―if she wants a sweet victory!
My Dear Henry by Kalynn Bayron In this gothic YA remix of Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde, a teen boy tries to discover the reason behind his best friend's disappearance—and the arrival of a mysterious and magnetic stranger—in misty Victorian London.
London, 1885. Gabriel Utterson, a 17-year-old law clerk, has returned to London for the first time since his life— and that of his dearest friend, Henry Jekyll—was derailed by a scandal that led to his and Henry's expuslion from the London Medical School. Whispers about the true nature of Gabriel and Henry's relationship have followed the boys for two years, and now Gabriel has a chance to start again. But Gabriel doesn't want to move on, not without Henry. His friend has become distant and cold since the disastrous events of the prior spring, and now his letters have stopped altogether. Desperate to discover what's become of him, Gabriel takes to watching the Jekyll house.
In doing so, Gabriel meets Hyde, a a strangely familiar young man with white hair and a magnetic charisma. He claims to be friends with Henry, and Gabriel can't help but begin to grow jealous at their apparent closeness, especially as Henry continues to act like Gabriel means nothing to him. But the secret behind Henry's apathy is only the first part of a deeper mystery that has begun to coalesce. Monsters of all kinds prowl within the London fog—and not all of them are out for blood...
As You Walk On By by Julian Winters The Breakfast Club meets Can't Hardly Wait with an unforgettable ensemble cast in another swoony YA contemporary from award-winning author Julian Winters!
Seventeen-year-old Theo Wright has it all figured out. But when the promposal goes epically wrong, Theo seeks refuge in an empty bedroom while the party rages on downstairs. Though, as the night goes on, Theo finds he's not as alone as he thinks when, one by one, new classmates join him to avoid who they're supposed be outside the bedroom door. Among them, a familiar acquaintance, a quiet outsider, an old friend, and a new flame . . .
