CALLAWAY, Fla. — They arrived by the hundreds last year after Hurricane Michael sliced through the Florida Panhandle, packing 160-mile-per-hour winds that snapped pine trees in half, mangled steel posts, ripped off roofs and upended people’s lives. Without electricity, potable water or reliable accommodation, a rapid-response labor force got to work carting away the wreckage.
In the ensuing months, the workers — nearly all of them from Central America, Mexico and Venezuela — toiled day and night across Bay County to reopen Panama City’s City Hall, repair the local campus of Florida State University and fix damaged roofs on several churches. In towns like Callaway, which saw 90 percent of its housing stock damaged by the Category 5 storm last October, they are still working.
The Congressional Budget Office estimates that 1.2 million Americans live in coastal areas at risk of significant damage from hurricanes. The increased frequency and severity of such disasters have given rise to a new recovery-and-reconstruction work force.
It is overwhelmingly made up of immigrants...
...Many of the hurricane workers are undocumented immigrants who entered illegally across the southwestern border. Others are asylum seekers, fleeing persecution in their home countries, or tourists who were supposed to remain in the country for only a few months. Many said they came because they knew the work was plentiful and promised to pay well.
But since arriving in Bay County during the chaotic weeks after Hurricane Michael, many of the immigrant workers have been exploited by employers who do not always pay what they are owed, or landlords who charge exorbitant rent for their temporary quarters. In this relatively conservative corner of the country, some have been stopped by sheriff’s deputies and transferred to Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
“Sometimes we work and work, we trust people and then we don’t get paid,” said Will, a 44-year-old Honduran immigrant who has worked successive hurricanes since Katrina in 2005. Like others, he asked to be identified only by his first name out of concern that he could be targeted for deportation, which he said was a constant worry. (Read more at link)
Just thought people might want to know, there are many kinds of victims with hurricanes.

How To Build a Golf Simulator On a Budget
Tumblr media
In case you're similar to me, the long winter months and absence of chances to get out and swing the sticks make me distraught. Indeed, it's pleasant to have a white Christmas and all that however there is just so much solace nourishment and I can eat, so much more distant family I can deal with thus time on the sofa I can spend. For a long time I look out my front room window and consider playing golf. Obviously, I scratch the tingle on my indoor putting mat, hit flop shots off the rug when my better half isn't looking and swing my weighted club in the carport. Be that as it may, toward the day's end there's not a viable alternative for the genuine article.
As I kept on stewing throughout the entire winter, I harkened back to my school days when we made our very own variant of a golf test system. It was entirely brilliant. At any rate we suspected as much. It was a canvas suspended from the roof and moored to the floor with cushions stuffed behind it. What's more, obviously we never needed to hold up until the go to get brew, the cooler by our hitting mat was in every case well-supplied.
Since its absolutely impossible I could pull off such an arrangement now, I began doing some exploration on indoor golf test systems. What I found is that there are a wide range of cool choices out there and… they cost a large portion of my outstanding home loan. In any case, with somewhat more burrowing, I found that it's possible to construct your very own test system for a small amount of the expense of having one introduced expertly.
Instructions:Buil your own golf simulator
You may feel that you need a wide range of extravagant gear and PCs to manufacture your very own test system yet such isn't the situation. All you truly need is sufficient space, a hitting mat, a projector, a screen or net and programming that enables you to play the world's best courses in 3-D.
Space
There's no way to avoid the way that golf test systems occupy room. At any rate you're going to require a space 10 feet wide by 15 feet long by 10 feet high. Except if you're blessed enough to have vaulted roofs, the in all likelihood space to put a test system is in your carport. On the off chance that you need to get particularly detailed, you should consider building a wood casing secured with work mesh to house your whole arrangement. In the event that you extravagant working with a pneumatic nailer and table saw, you can even form a work area for your PC and a rack for your clubs. In case you're searching for something less complex, buying programming like OptiShot enables you to hit balls into a net and watch the ball trip on your TV progressively.
Hitting Mat
You've presumably hit off modest mats at your neighborhood driving reach. These mats fill a need however you're going to need something somewhat more pleasant for your indoor golf test system. On the off chance that you plan on hitting drivers or fairway woods, you're going to require a tangle that you can get a tee in to. On the off chance that you need to recreate various untruths like fairway and harsh, finding a tangle with various statures is an alternative too.
Our preferred indoor mats are the:
PGM3660
Callaway FT Launch Zone
Rukket Tri-Turf
Truedays
Sklz Launch Pad
These mats are moderately reasonable and give you better input at that point mats you find on an open air driving extent.
Projector
Despite the fact that you can utilize your TV or PC for your golf test system, having bigger display makes for an increasingly practical encounter. For this you're going to require a projector. While the best ones available can cost a great many dollars, something somewhere in the range of $300 and $500 ought to carry out the responsibility.
In case you're considering getting a dir-modest projector, we exceptionally dishearten doing as such. Despite the fact that there are a lot of alternatives out there for under $100, practically every one of them do not have the splendor expected to see your shots and the course clearly.
Our best proposals that won't use up every last cent are the:
Epson VS230
BenQ MS 524
ViewSonic PJD5533W.
Before you swipe your Visa for a projector however, ensure that is has inputs that are perfect with your PC. More often than not a HDMI port is all you need.
Screen
The screens utilized for top-rack test systems can be exorbitant. Fortunately there are a few different ways to set aside cash without gambling flying golf balls breaking something in your home.
Numerous individuals settle on a straightforward net like the one you may have in your back yard. Brands like Rukket, Callaway, Jef World of Golf, Galileo, GoSports and Club Champ all make golf hitting nets that dependably assimilate the effect of full-speed golf shots and give a cost-productive alternative to progressively costly screens.
On the off chance that feel aren't that essential to you, utilizing a rock solid light-hued covering or canvas is another choice. Before you completely introduce it, you'll need to test the nature of your projector's picture against the snare to ensure it is clear enough so you can sufficiently observe course includes and the trip of your ball.
In the event that neither of the alternatives above work for you, you can make the shoddy speculation of froth golf balls. These balls are made explicitly to be hit inside and except if you hit your mother's china with a shot, you shouldn't need to stress over breaking anything.
Programming
In the event that you've hit balls in a test system in a business space, there's a reason you pay upwards of $50 every hour. Those machines, however truly cool, cost as much as $50,000 a piece. The best programming for your home test system is OptiShot which expenses under $500. While this program won't give you crush factor, dispatch edge and turn rate numbers, you will get precise input on details like club head speed, separation, shot shape and swing way.
The OptiShot likewise enables you to play an assortment of world-well known courses, modify climate conditions and play various configurations against your companions.
So What Is Total Cost?
On the off chance that you need to manufacture a straightforward no frills test system that gives you the impression that you're playing a genuine round of golf, your cost breakdown should look something like the accompanying.
Programming: $500
Projector: $300
Hitting Mat: $60
Hitting Net: $40
Complete: $1,000
Additional Features
In the event that you have somewhat more space in your financial limit, you can buy a portion of the things recorded above with some additional highlights or you can select some cool additional items to upgrade your experience.
One choice is purchasing an Ipad and introducing swing examination programming like V-1, SwingTIP or SwingSmart. These kinds of projects enable you to utilize a camcorder to take a video of your swing and after that moderate it down, draw lines and see one next to the other pictures of your swing and the swings of the Pros from various edges. A few projects even accompany pre-stacked instructional tips or enable you to pay for a membership for tweaked proficient guidance.
Another choice is to construct a fenced in area for your test system that keeps surrounding light out and light from your projector in. This includes the expense of materials like wood and some kind of covering. Covers can be anything from work mesh to shower window ornaments, essentially, anything to shield errant shots from flying out of the fenced in area and causing harm.
The choices to alter your test system are boundless. Don't hesitate to get as innovative as you need and as your spending limit permits.
Practice
Presently that you're fully operational it's an ideal opportunity to put your golf test system to utilize. The principal thing that most likely rings a bell is working on during when the climate keeps you from heading outside. Regardless of whether you're taking a shot at swing mechanics or dialing in separations with your short irons, having the option to see your ball flight and numbers inside is the thing that you assembled this test system for you know.
Play Where the Pros Play
Possibly you simply need to play the absolute most renowned courses on the planet that you likely won't get the opportunity to play, all things considered. For me that was Augusta National, the most select club on the planet where ex-presidents are even denied access. In the wake of dumping one in the water left of the green on Hole 11 and making intruder, I birdied the notorious standard 3 twelfth over Ray's Creek and parred the standard 5 thirteenth. I played Amen Corner in even standard! How cool is that? Your golf test system programming comes pre-stacked with notorious courses and at a little cost you have the choice to download others and keep them forever.
Practice With a Buddy
Possibly you and an amigo have a mutual objective for your golf games. Regardless of whether it's breaking 90 just because or figuring out how to hit a draw rather than a cut, golf test systems accompany a training mode where you can simply beat balls on a driving reach. You'll get criticism on each shot and have the option to gauge each other's advancement the whole time.
It's imperative to practice like you play as well. An incredible method to do this is by keeping your training focused with basic games. You have the opportunity to get as innovative with this as you need. One of my preferred games is KP's. The principles to this game are really straight forward. You and your accomplice concur on an objective and each hit 10 shots estimating who is nearest on each shot and the most player with the most KP's after every one of the shots are hit is the victor.
Fellow or Gal Time
Each person or lady longs for having their very own variant of a definitive man or lady cavern and for enthusiastic golfers, having a test system and a major level screen is at the highest priority on the rundown. For me, school football Saturdays resemble religion. Most Saturdays during the season will discover me tossing a spread for a couple of my companions where we have all the significant games on and crush in 36 openings while giving each other trouble. Whatever the event might be, having a golf test system just improves the experience for everybody.
Begin a League
One of the best time things you can do with your golf test system is begin an association that gets together all the time to contend. You can structure the group anyway you pick however guaranteeing that groups are equitably coordinated is vital to ensuring everybody has a decent time. In my group, we have four-man groups all comprising of an A, B, C and D player. We play an alternate configuration consistently and groups are granted focuses for where they wrap up. Be that as it may, once more, you're allowed to set this up anyway you need. Ultimately, ensure there is something to play for toward the finish of the period. It doesn't need to anything incredible, however having a prize for the triumphant group propels everybody to appear and remain intrigued throughout the entire season.
End
The chilly dull a long time of winter are hopeless for genuine golfers. The huge names aren't playing on TV and your odds to get out to play yourself are constrained, best case scenario. For a moderately little venture be that as it may, you can construct your own golf test system and have a great deal of fun with your companions all while taking a shot at your game. The best part is the point at which the golf season at last comes around, you'll be miles in front of your pals that haven't contact a club in months.

VAVA House in Seattle
Design: Fivedot
Location: Washington, USA
Photos by Mark Woods
VAVA House, Seattle, WA
The design of the VAVA House emphasizes the creative ways families share space and help each other grow, learn, and play. Located in Seattle, Washington, the clients asked Fivedot to design a house that reinforced a connection to their neighbors and their new community.
In response, the design team flipped the typical arrangement of a suburban house which normally is closed off in the front and more open to the rear. In contrast, the 3,643-square-foot home is designed to open onto an expansive front patio with multiple gathering areas which then cascades down to a small park across the street. A custom charpai (swing) anchors the covered front porch which also contains a firepit and a heater making it a true four-season space.
Programmatically, the VAVA House has a total of four bedrooms – one main bedroom, two kid’s, bedrooms with built in beds/closets and a guest bedroom – three bathrooms, an open living/dining/kitchen room, a gym, upstairs lounge, office, and tinkering room.
The house also has a green roof, extensive solar panels, and utilizes previous concrete to reduce any runoff. Some additional fun design details include:
the porch swing was made by Fivedot from roof joists salvaged from the original house with hardware the clients brought back from India;
the clients provided prints of their children when they first walked which were put into CAD and the contractor CNC’d them into the interior floor;
there are a couple of mural prints on the walls from Mario de Miranda;
and, there is a custom plant rack for hydroponic growing.

“We have a butcher, a baker, and a candlestick-maker,” said Leah Larabell, co-owner of High Garden Tea, an apothecary-style shop.
She’s not reciting a storybook rhyme. The East Nashville neighborhood where she and her husband Joel built and run their business really has that legendary trio of retailers as part of the business community that support its eclectic amalgam of residents, including many musicians and artists.
“As I go through my day, every single part of my day affects the East Nashville economy: going to the dry cleaner, getting meat at Porter Road Butcher, picking up wine at Weiss, and then going to a show at The Basement East,” adds Libby Callaway, an East Nashvillian and owner of The Callaway, a marketing and branding firm.
Larabell and Callaway were among those who awoke Tuesday morning to see that their community had been devastated by tornadoes. Four separate tornadoes hit Middle Tennessee around 1 a.m. on March 3, 2020, one of which stayed on the ground for more than 50 miles. The storms, which reached wind speeds of more than 175 m.p.h., battered the metro area, suburbs, and rural counties. Within the city, the neighborhoods hit hardest, like East Nashville, were those with concentrations of small businesses, from dry cleaners to boutiques to restaurants. At least 25 people lost their lives, with more than 400 homes and nearly 200 businesses destroyed, including the popular Basement East music venue Callaway frequents. The Weiss Liquor store is open, but lost the iconic neon sign that greeted Main Street visitors long before East Nashville had its creative cachet.
The building that houses Larabell’s business is now short several walls, its roof, and $180,000 in merchandise. Within hours of the storm, loyal customers started a GoFundMe campaign raising enough for the couple to be able to pay their 12 employees for at least two weeks while they regroup.
Nashville’s recent population growth has been well-documented; for parts of 2017 and 2018 more than 80 people moved to Music City every day. The city’s population increased from 569,000 in 2000 to 705,000 in 2020, with the greater Metro area now topping 1.75 million. But as the city has grown, the small town-nature of this neighborhood, which was hit by tornadoes in almost the exact same spot in both 1933 and 1998, has not dissipated. The losses of these businesses—whether temporary or permanent—have had both an emotional and an economic impact on its residents.
The Soda Parlor, another nearby business that suffered the wrath of the storms, was nationally known because of its owner, Olan Rogers, a YouTube comedian and the creator of TBS’s Final Space. Fans flocked for old-fashioned sundaes and custom merch, sure, but thanks to the free retro arcade games, it was somewhere local kids and parents regularly hung out after school.
As Nashville has grown and East Nashville real estate has skyrocketed, there has been hand-wringing about too many restaurants and too small of a labor pool. But as the neighborhood woke up to splintered power poles and insulation hanging from trees, it became clear that collaboration and charity trumped competition.
Hospitality is the city’s second-largest industry, by number of employees, and keeping those folks paid is essential to rebuilding, says Butch Spyridon, president and CEO, Nashville Convention & Visitors Corp.
Because Tennessee doesn’t have an income tax, the economy relies on sales tax. “It is more expensive here today than it was on Sunday,” he says of the loss of sales tax revenue.
Nashville native and Chef Jessica Benefield, owner of Two Ten Jack and The Green Pheasant, was lucky in that her restaurants were spared from the storms. She started a GoFundMe campaign with the intent of buying grocery gift cards for out-of-work chefs and waiters.
Countless restaurants offered assistance to business owners who, on a regular day, are competitors, offering to hire staff for a night or a week or a month, making shifts for extra sous chefs and servers, all the while making clear that there is no poaching going on in this tight labor market: Everyone will be welcomed to go back to their original jobs when restaurants re-open.
At other businesses, the owners literally made space, often for the competition. Some restaurants cleaned shelves in their walk-in coolers so that restaurants that lost power could store ingredients. Co-working spaces, including Collective615, a woman-only space across town and the Nashville Entrepreneur Center near downtown welcomed displaced entrepreneurs with a desk and an Internet connection. Boutiques, including Apple and Oak in East Nashville and Hey Rooster General Store in Hillsboro Village, welcomed other merchants to come sell their wares in their shops.
Mike Krajewski lost his personal-training gym, MK Fitness, and was flooded with offers of places where he could train his clients, many from gym-owners he has never met. Krajewski, who emigrated from Canada, thinks the high number of transplants in Nashville might contribute to the supportive business community. “This is a spot where we’ve chosen our family. We have chosen the people we want to be around.”
As cleanup crews work to remove debris, two neighborhood entities, CreativeMornings and Center 615, an East Nashville co-working space, teamed up to offer a less practical, but more poignant, help. They urged volunteers to drop off the sentimental, but not necessarily valuable, items found in the rubble for future re-uniting with tornado victims. Their lost-and-found bins feature photographs, stuffed animals, and handmade quilts. In true Nashville fashion, one of the first things found? A GRAMMY certificate.

15 Months Post Michael
We are just past 15 Months Post Hurricane Michael and we are still dealing with things. There are buildings that collapsed during the hurricane that have still not had anything done to them. You drive around and see empty lots and can’t seem to remember what was on the lot.
The storage place that we had stuff in, has been leveled and things that were left in the units that were not damaged (I think) have been put together on the property. There are houses the still have tarps on them. A friend will have to have their house rebuilt because the mold got really bad in the house. It was not checked on often enough and the tarp wore out and water leaked in the house.
We finally have a roof, but have to start moving things out of the house so that we can get the inside repaired. Lots of work to do. But trying to keep my spirits up and to remember that once everything is done, our house will be almost like new.
Just keep the Eastern section of Bay County, FL in your prayers. We are still recovering. Panama City Beach has been up and running since three days after the storm because they were not hit like the rest of the county. Panama City Beach is not the same as Panama City, Lynn Haven, Callaway, Parker, Springfield and Mexico Beach. The latter cities were the ones that were greatly affected by Hurricane Michael, while Panama City Beach was not. The PCB Mayor did not want to help “the town people” in any way.

FEMA hiring locals to help area recover from Hurricane Michael
FEMA
NORTHWEST FLORIDA (Press Release) – The latest FEMA Disaster Recover Update:
• FEMA is hiring people who live in areas affected by Hurricane Michael to join our recovery team as temporary employees. Hiring temporary staff locally allows FEMA to diversify the workforce while affording opportunities for survivors to help other survivors. Jobs are available in Tallahassee, Panama City and other areas in Florida recovering from Hurricane Michael. Interested applicants can view open positions on USAjobs.gov, and search using keywords "FEMA" or "local hire" and "Florida" in the location field.
• The Emergency Prescription Assistance Program (EPAP) for survivors who do not have health insurance has been extended to Dec 15. EPAP covers prescription drugs, vaccines and other medical supplies damaged in the hurricane. A list of more than 72,000 participating pharmacies where claims can be filled is available at the HHS website
• The application deadline for Disaster Unemployment Assistance is Friday, Dec. 7. DUA is available to Florida residents and businesses in Bay, Calhoun, Franklin, Gadsden, Gulf, Holmes, Jackson, Leon, Liberty, Taylor, Wakulla and Washington counties. DUA is available for unemployment beginning October 14, 2018 until April 13, 2019, as long as the individual’s unemployment continues to be a result of the disaster. Find more information about application criteria at www.floridajobs.org.
Stay in Touch with FEMA • Contact FEMA if you have any updates or changes to your application for disaster assistance, including access to your primary home, utility service, and current location. • Visit DisasterAssistance.gov or call the FEMA Helpline 800-621-3362 (TTY 800-462-7585) to update your application.
Don’t wait to clean up and make repairs to your flood-damaged home • Take photos or videos of all damage before you start cleaning or repairing your property and save your receipts for any clean up or repairs. An inspector will contact you to arrange an inspection. Inspections are free.
Temporary Housing
• FEMA contractors have begun placing the first travel trailers on private sites. Direct housing is temporary. These units are not permanent dwellings. FEMA staff will meet with survivors regularly to determine their continued eligibility and demonstrated needs and assist them in developing a permanent housing plan. • The state-led Florida Housing Task Force surveyed available rental resources in the hurricane-impacted counties and found rental housing resources were insufficient to meet the high demand for housing in Bay, Calhoun, Gadsden, Gulf and Jackson counties. • On Oct. 28, FEMA authorized the Direct Temporary Housing Assistance Program for these counties. • Direct Temporary Housing Assistance is available to eligible applicants whose primary residence is uninhabitable if FEMA determines that eligible applicants cannot use financial Rental Assistance due to a lack of available housing resources in the area. • Direct housing is just one form of temporary housing assistance being provided by the state and federal agencies. Many survivors have received grants for basic repairs and rental assistance, and temporary roofs provided by the Corps of Engineers. • Obtaining a travel trailer or manufactured housing unit is not an automatic process. Eligibility must be determined after survivors apply for assistance and according to guidelines developed and approved by the state of Florida and FEMA. • Additional phone interviews are being conducted to determine applicants who are identified and qualified for direct housing assistance. • As individual eligibility for direct temporary housing is determined, sites to place the units are inspected to assess feasibility for placement. • Installation of a temporary housing unit includes: • Site preparation • Placement of the unit • Anchoring of the unit • Utilities hookup • Compliance with local permitting and completion of final inspection • Once installation of the unit is complete, an occupancy inspection will take place. When the unit passes inspection, it is ready for occupancy. At that point, the applicant will sign a license-in agreement to occupy the unit while they work on their permanent housing plan. • Direct housing is temporary. These units are not permanent dwellings. FEMA staff will meet with survivors regularly to determine their continued eligibility and demonstrated needs and assist them in developing a permanent housing plan. • To remain eligible, survivors must demonstrate continuing progress on a permanent housing plan. FEMA staff will keep survivors up to date on program details and deadlines through face-to-face meetings, phone calls and letters.
FEMA Individuals and Assistance Programs
Eligible Counties • Bay, Calhoun, Franklin, Gadson, Gulf, Holmes, Jackson, Leon, Liberty, Taylor, Wakulla and Washington
Individuals & Households

10 days after hurricane, football offers a welcome escape
PANAMA CITY, Fla. — Castor Gay knew his life had changed the moment he watched his back fence disappear into the howling wind and water started pouring from his ceiling. Mike Maddox sensed the same thing when he packed into a tiny pantry closet with his mom, brother and five dogs while his house shook.
Hurricane Michael delivered quite a punch when it hit the teenagers who make up the Mosley High Dolphins football team.
But just 10 days later, under the bright sunshine at Tommy Oliver Stadium in downtown Panama City, a small return to regular life had already begun. Gay was back in his bright orange, white and green jersey while doing his job on the offensive line protecting Maddox, who was once again a quarterback.
For a few hours, football was important again.
And the Dolphins were ready to punch back against the Pensacola Tigers.
“We ain’t got to hit nobody in the mouth in a couple weeks,” Mosley coach Jeremy Brown said as his voice rose to a crescendo during an emotional pregame speech. “We ain’t been able to practice because we ain’t got no field because all our fields have nails and roof tacks all over them. But there ain’t none of them out there on this field today.”
“Hit them in the mouth!”
In many ways, it was almost shocking to see football being played in the midst of such widespread devastation. From the higher seats of the stadium, the effect on Panama City was evident, with debris, utility crews and snapped pine trees as far as the eye could see.
There was a FEMA trailer in the parking lot and during game timeouts, officials talked about city-wide news like electricity, water and gas issues to an estimated 1,500 fans in attendance. But for the most part, it was a joyful gathering where everyone forgot their worries. Fans, football players, cheerleaders and band members from several area schools were at the game.
“Man, this is great,” said Nate Starr, the lead game official whose home in Callaway was heavily damaged during the storm. “It gets the community together. We’re all family now.”
Frank McCall, who has two sons on the Mosley team, acknowledged that when he first heard about Saturday’s game, he thought it was crazy. But after realizing admission and food would be free and it would provide an escape for the community, he changed his mind.
“Sports are always the one thing, that regardless of race or religion, always brings people together,” McCall said.
In many ways, Hurricane Michael was an equalizer for the diverse population of Panama City. There was hardly any home that was spared the storm’s wrath and everyone at Saturday’s game could commiserate about insurance adjusters, fallen trees, shattered houses and altered lives.
Gay’s house is in an upper middle-class neighborhood in Lynn Haven, a hard-hit suburb just north of Panama City. He said his family prepared for the hurricane in the usual way, grabbing some puzzles and downloading a few movies as they prepared to go without power for a day or two and then go about their lives.
Then came Michael’s 155-mph (250-kph) winds and the snapping of trees.
“This wasn’t going to be a normal hurricane party,” Gay said.
Much of Gay’s time since the storm has been spent picking through the remains of his house in the stifling north Florida heat.
Tarps covered the roof. Shingles lay everywhere outside. He’d lost a lot — but not his humor.
“I just try to look at the bright side,” Gay said with a grin. “Me and my parents always wanted to redo our front porch and flower bed, kitchen and living room. This certainly gives us the chance to do that.”
About a mile away, at Maddox’s house, he and his family had spent an hour in a closet under a staircase with their five dogs as the worst of the storm hit. A few windows were blown out and water got into some rooms.
Like several other Mosley players, Maddox spent much of the past 10 days at the houses of out-of-town friends or relatives who had power. Communication with teammates was difficult.
Many of them thought the football season was lost.
Then Brown began to spread the word: The Dolphins would practice on Thursday in an effort to get ready for Saturday’s game. When a little more than half the roster gathered under the shredded roof of Mosley’s football office — including most of the starters — the game was on.
“There were a few tears shed,” Maddox said. “It was more emotional than I thought. But that’s a good thing.”
The 43-year-old Brown said the best part of the first practice was being able “to put all our arms around these boys and hug them.” Like his players, Brown and his family — which include four kids ages 6 to 17 — are dealing with storm damage.
But Brown said it was important that he also concentrate on his “second family.”
“We tell the kids all the time that every team takes on a different personality,” Brown said. “Well this one’s got an extremely different personality now with everything they’ve been through.
“The whole thing — man — it’s still kind of unreal.”
That’s why police lieutenant Mike Renaldo, who works for the Bay District Schools department, said it was so important to have a few hours of fun. Just like everyone else, he’d spent the past week and a half sweaty and stressed out.
He took a big bite out of a fresh hot dog and smiled.
“You should go grab one of these: It sure beats an MRE,” he said with a grin, referring to the ready-to-eat meals many had been eating for days.
As for the game, the fans saw a great one, but Pensacola rallied to beat Mosley 24-21. Gay was emotional afterward, but not because the Dolphins lost. He suddenly realized that for a few moments, when he was sweating and pouring out his emotions on the football field, it was like Hurricane Michael had never happened.
“I felt better than normal, felt like old again,” Gay said wiping away tears. “There was no loss. Nothing. It was all back. I don’t care about the scoreboard — I’m back with my friends, family and brothers.”

LYNN HAVEN, Fla. — Michael Rollins shook President Donald Trump’s hand Monday at the front door of his hurricane-ravaged home in the Florida Panhandle, saying he decided to ride out the storm because he didn’t have anywhere else to go.
“I knew I had made my commitment to stay with my animals,” Rollins told the president, standing by a massive pine tree down on the front lawn.
The president, along with first lady Melania Trump, listened to stories of survival and struggle as he surveyed the wreckage of Hurricane Michael. As Trump toured, the death toll stood at 17, with thousands of buildings gutted and tens of thousands of homes and businesses without electricity. Trump paused his election-season campaign blitz for the visit, largely — but not completely — putting politics on the backburner for the day.
Trump visited an aid distribution center, set up in a parking lot filled with boxes of diapers, piles of clothes and bottled water. He and the first lady handed out bottles of water to residents who came to see him and tell him their stories about the storm.
“Somebody said it was like a very wide — extremely wide — tornado. … Beyond any winds that they’ve seen,” Trump said. “Look behind you. I mean, these massive trees are just ripped out of the earth. This is really incredible. This road — five hours ago, you couldn’t ride on it.”
Trump was joined by Florida Gov. Rick Scott, Federal Emergency Management Agency director Brock Long and Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen.
Before visiting the city of Lynn Haven, Trump took a 55-minute helicopter tour of the region to see how the local and state rescue efforts were progressing. He saw houses stripped of their roofs, a water tower that had toppled to the ground and 18-wheel trucks scattered in a parking lot.
Trump also saw the heavy damage inflicted on Tyndall Air Force Base.
The president landed at an airport near Panama City, where power poles bowed toward the ground, pieces of metal roofing were scattered about and pine trees had been uprooted or were snapped in half. The view during the drive included houses smashed by trees, bent billboards and a demolished trailer park.
Power crews were working to restore power to thousands.
“Everything I’ve asked the president for, he’s come through,” said Scott, the Republican candidate for U.S. Senate. “We still have a lot of work to do. We’re still getting water out, getting food out.”
Rollins was among many people in the Panhandle who rode out the storm. Kayla Runyon, 22, said she evacuated to a hotel in Callaway with some relatives.
“We watched out the window and we just watched buildings be demolished,” Runyon said. “Steel beams started coming through the hotel windows and through the walls. There were windows busting. We were scared. It was scary.”
Trump also surveyed storm damage in Georgia, where the focus was on farmers whose crops were wiped out by the hurricane.
At a farm in Macon, Kevin Rentz, a fourth-generation cotton and peanut farmer, told Trump he lost his entire cotton crop. Rentz said he’s still digging up peanuts, but the problem is storing them without electricity.
Trump tried to reassure the farmers, asking whether they had insurance and promising that electricity would be restored soon.
“You’ll get it back,” Trump told Rentz.
Trump still had politics on his mind, despite the devastation he was about to see. Before leaving the White House, he tweeted about his rally crowds, claiming they are bigger than ever before, including during the 2016 election. “Never an empty seat in these large venues,” he said.
The president refused to cancel a campaign rally in Erie, Pennsylvania, last Wednesday — the day Michael struck the Panhandle — saying he couldn’t disappoint the thousands of people who had been lining up for hours to see him. Trump also held rallies in Ohio and Kentucky before the Florida-Georgia visit.
In Florida, the mood at the FEMA aid distribution center seemed lighthearted despite the surrounding devastation, as Trump bantered with a crowd that seemed more interested in selfies with him than in the bottled water he was offering in the heat and humidity.
A woman carrying a toddler posed for a photo and then told Trump he should come back for barbecue. Another woman thanked the first lady for her anti-bullying campaign.

Crowbars, cadaver dogs in search for survivors, bodies after Florida hurricane
MEXICO BEACH, Fla. (Reuters) – Search and rescue volunteers have located hundreds of people reported missing in the U.S. Southeast after Hurricane Michael tore through their Florida Panhandle communities, but the death toll of at least 18 was expected to rise.
Crews heard cries for help and crowbarred into a mobile home crumpled by the storm in Panama City, freeing a mother and daughter, both diabetics who had been trapped in a closet without insulin for two days and were on the verge of diabetic shock, rescuers said on Saturday.
“We had another lady who was on her last tank of oxygen. No cell phone, no power, no nothing. There are people out here on dialysis, but there is no power,” said Taylor Fontenot, 29, a roofing contractor from Sugar Land, Texas, and founder of 50 Star SAR, a volunteer search and rescue organisation.
In door-to-door searches, teams consisting mostly of off-duty police officers and firefighters have found more than 520 of the 2,100 people reported missing since Michael crashed ashore near Mexico Beach, Florida, on Wednesday as one of the most powerful storms in U.S. history.
“We expect that number to go up dramatically today,” said Matthew Marchetti, co-founder of the Houston-based CrowdSource Rescue, adding that hopes were raised by an influx of volunteers on the weekend and the restoration of power in some areas.
“Volunteers are working side-by-side with first responders. They are cutting holes in roofs. They try to take a picture so we can call the family and tell them we made contact,” he said.
But as roads were cleared to allow wider searches, the death toll was expected to mount. As of Saturday, authorities were reporting at least 18 deaths in Florida, Georgia, North Carolina and Virginia.
Rescue teams, hampered by power and telephone outages, used cadaver dogs, drones and heavy equipment to hunt for people in the rubble.
Fontenot, who said he alerts authorities when he finds corpses, has a cadaver dog with his group.
“When we pulled into Mexico Beach, she was trying to jump out the window because she smelled so many bodies,” he said.
In Callaway, Florida, an especially hard-hit town, Catholic Christians barbecued hamburgers on Saturday and Scientologists handed out water.
“I’m homeless,” said nursing assistant Carla Covington, 45, who is caring for her mother and two children after their house was destroyed by falling trees.
She said it felt good to receive comfort, but was also hard.

“I’m used to helping people and not asking for help,” she said, her voice breaking with emotion.
Panama City port worker Josh Jackson, 29, had three cars damaged. The rented home he lived in with his girlfriend and son was wrecked, as were their possessions.
“I lost everything so I got to start over,” he said near a tent in a parking lot where a Geico insurance agent was taking claims. Jackson said he plans to move to a community that was not so badly hit, but was concerned that delays processing his insurance claim might hold him up.
Michael ripped most of two walls out from the red-brick St. Andrew United Methodist Church in Panama City, but parishioners spent Saturday handing out food, water and clothes to others.
“Our whole city was hit. There has got be a way it can recover,” said Jo Ann Sutter, 73, a volunteer who was married in the church. “We will.”
The tropical storm, which grew in less than two days into a Category 4 hurricane, tore apart entire neighbourhoods.
More than 1,700 search and rescue workers were deployed, including seven swift-water rescue teams and nearly 300 ambulances, Florida Governor Rick Scott’s office said.

Power and phone service were being slowly restored, with about 236,000 homes and businesses still without power in North Carolina, down from a peak of more than 600,000, said spokesman Keith Acree of the North Carolina Department of Public Safety.
It could be weeks before power is restored to the most damaged parts of Florida.
