Summary: Before the meetup on Traxxon III, the Guardians try to relax and prepare, but some inner turmoil and bad blood make for a rough night.
Author’s Notes: Title is from ‘Help is on the Way’ by Rise Against
Chapter 20: Help is on the Way
They spent the last couple of hours before the meetup playing card games and drinking coffee, occasionally going over smaller details of the upcoming plan. Peter even managed to score a few wins against Gamora, who was using the same old strategy she had used back when they'd first started playing in his universe, before she changed tactics and proceeded to claim almost every game afterwards.
Eventually, the time grew close and they broke apart to get everything ready. Nebula came down and, after a brief discussion, tied Gamora's hands in some sort of special knot that supposedly Gamora could undo herself if she needed to.
Cosmo had brought some lightweight communicators with him which could be clipped onto their ears. They were standard equipment of the Knowhere guards and would allow them to communicate with the ships above. The Ravagers had all been given the frequency codes and Peter attuned his mask with relative ease. Gamora's was hidden on her person so it couldn't be easily seen, and if it was found could easily be misconstrued as having been placed there in secret by one of the others.
Their preparations were interrupted by the trilling of the communications system.
"Hey there, Pete," Kraglin greeted when they piled up into the now rather crowded flight deck to answer the hail.
"Kraglin? What's up, where's Yondu?"
"I don't know what you'n' the Cap' discussed in private, but he got real quiet and left shortly after. Said he had one more ace up his sleeve, but it wasn't the kind'a place you can jus' call up. So he left me'n Horuz in charge of the ship an' the crew and said to make sure you don't get your 'dumb-ass killed or captured down there 'for he got back.' His words." Kraglin looked so small seated in the Captain's chair. He more closely resembled the little bobbles resting on the side than the imposing man who it belonged to.
"So Yondu just left?" That didn't sound like something the captain would do.
"Yeah. He said to go on with the plan, and if things go wrong, just hold out and stall 'em. I don't know what he's up to, but it seemed real import'nt to him." Kraglin looked a little upset. "I don't suppose you'd have any clue what he's up to?"
"No. No idea," Peter said truthfully. Kraglin seemed to be a bit mollified by that, at least. He had always been a bit jealous of Yondu's obvious soft spot for the Terran, and it had been a source of strain on their relationship growing up. It had largely faded away after Peter had left and made it clear he had no intentions of usurping the first-mate's hard-won position. Still, every now and then the old rivalry between them would rear its ugly head in the oddest of ways.
"A'right, well, most a'the ships are in place and ready. Just wanted to touch base and make sure everything's ready on your end."
"Yeah. We're almost all set here. I'll send a signal when we're ready to make the jump."
"Good. See you on the other side." He reached for the button that would cut off the call, then hesitated. "Good luck, Pete'."
"Yeah, Kraglin, you too."
Kraglin gave him a quick but sincere smile and the screen went blank.
"Alright, guys." Peter turned to face his friends gathered behind him. "Here we go."
-x-
Traxxon III was just as small and lifeless as promised. In person, it was a rustic red and sandy brown little orb with very little in the way of defining features, and most of it was obscured by the thick layer of asteroids caught in its gravitational pull. As Peter coasted in, an unknown hail signal lit up his communication console.
"Hello?" he answered.
"Star-lord," came the familiar voice of Korath.
"Hey Korath!" Peter greeted with such force Korath's carefully schooled face wavered a bit. Nerves were making him a little too jittery, and Peter tried to reign it in a bit.
"You're late," Korath hissed, recovering quickly. Peter was pretty sure they weren't late, but Korath's barbs weren't the top of his list of concerns right now. "I am sending the co-ordinates for where we've landed."
"Okay. Let's get this over with quick and we can all be on our merry way. And remember. No tricks. I'm not landing until I see Rocket."
"He'll be there," Korath promised darkly before disconnecting from their talk. A moment later, a set of co-ordinates blinked to life on the navigation panel and Peter guided them down through the asteroid field.
"I don't like that he was here so early and chose the meet-point," Nebula grumbled from the Co-pilot's seat.
"It doesn't matter," Peter replied firmly, possibly more to himself than to her. "We planned for him to ambush us, so whatever he's up to, we'll be fine."
His crew-mates didn't look convinced, but no one else spoke up.
The tiny dark dot of Korath's ship finally came into view, situated in the center of a wide flat basin of some sort. The floor of what might have once been a deep valley was filled almost to the brim now with a flat and featureless desert that afforded nowhere for any enemies to be hiding in wait. Peter could easily see for miles in all directions. That was a good sign. If Korath was planning an ambush of his own, it would have to be pretty far away, and that's what they were banking on. As they drew close, Nebula pulled up a magnified image from the ship's cameras of the Kree fighter below.
The enemy ship's loading ramp was wide open. Heavy boots were visible at the top of the ramp, but the rest of the bodies were obscured inside the entrance from this angle. They were probably the crew for Korath's fighter. It was at least twice the size of the Milano and polished with obvious care. At the base of the ramp stood a match set of Kree guards, with Korath in the center, a heavy blaster cradled lazily in his arms. At his side was none other than Rocket, ears pinned back and tail twitching. The ship and crew were bathed in the red ambient light from the thick atmosphere, turning their black armor and the ship's hull an eerie deep crimson.
Peter's hands felt clammy where they wrapped around the controls at the sight of his friend.
Peter guided them in to land a few ship-lengths away from where Korath was parked, prepping the ship for a fast takeoff before joining the crew at the loading ramp. Cosmo was standing off to the side, where he would remain hidden on the ship to keep a look out for other telepathic influences, and signal the fleet when it was time to engage.
"Alright guys," Peter said, jogging up to take his position at Gamora's side and activating his mask. "Show time."
The ramp lowered and Peter was immediately buffeted by the warm dry atmosphere. Despite the dim red lighting, it was so warm it felt like opening an oven or peering into the engine rooms mid-flight. The strange contrast just added a layer of disquiet to his already on-edge nerves.
"STAR-LORD!" Korath boomed across the distance between them. "Let's get this over with!"
"That's just what I was thinking," Peter grumbled to himself.
"Not so fast!" Nebula stepped forward as they had planned. "We want the Obedience Collar Controls, Korath. Hand them over."
"Fine," he sneered so quickly he'd probably been anticipating this demand, reaching to unclip something from his belt and holding up a small object that Peter assumed was the controls. "But I want the Godslayer."
Nebula's eyes flickered over to Peter's and he gave a brief nod. They'd be retrieving Gamora anyways, so it wouldn't matter. Nebula just gave a short huff and retreated into the ship, returning a moment later with the Godslayer in hand, waving it at Korath dramatically, before attaching it to its usual place on Gamora's belt.
"You'd better not stab me with this when I retrieve you," Peter heard her hiss under her breath.
"The controls!" Peter called, when the sword had been clipped on and Nebula had stepped back. Korath seemed satisfied at least, and chucked the item with impressive strength and aim straight to Peter who caught it with significantly less grace. He fumbled around with it for a moment like a wet bar of soap before finally managing to get a hold of it and held it up for inspection. It was a little black plastic cube, small enough to fit in his palm, with a series of buttons that he couldn't identify and a little screen of some sort on the bottom that was maybe half the size of his pinky finger. It distantly reminded him of a garage door opener he'd once played with as a child, only this time he didn't have the urge to mash the buttons repeatedly or see what happened if you press more than one at the same time. Carefully, he tucked it into the inside pocket of his short jacket where he hoped it wouldn't get jostled around too much.
"Is that all?" Korath called.
"Yeah. We'll send them out at the same time. Nice and easy." Peter pulled out his quad-blasters and gave Gamora a little nod. If it was his Gamora, she'd know he was winking at her under his mask right now and probably roll her eyes at him. Instead, she stepped forward, her eyes hard and focused straight ahead.
Korath said something that Peter couldn't catch across the distance and Rocket moved forward as well. He did not look terribly pleased about any of this, his eyes were narrowed into little slits and his ears were pinned back until they nearly fused with his skull. He appeared to have been stripped of most of his weapons, although Peter would be hard-pressed to believe he didn't have something hidden away, and his hands were held up as though in surrender. Peter was grateful his mask would hide the heavy frown and discomfort he was certain was written across his face.
Peter's fingers flexed and fiddled with the triggers of his quad blasters while he struggled not to fidget too much. The distance which had felt so short when he was landing felt like an endless stretch now while he waited for Rocket to make his way to the ship. Nebula and Drax were doing a good job of remaining still, but behind himself Peter could hear Groot shifting anxiously as well. Just a few more yards. Rocket was close enough now he could see a small nick in his right ear, and a scar across his temple where the fur had grown back white.
From underneath the muzzle, Rocket's face scrunched up further as he passed Peter, probably curling his lips as he turned an ugly glare up at him. Peter kept his finger on the stun setting just in case.
Groot took advantage of Rocket's momentary distraction to make his move. A huge palm that he had gathered before the landing slammed down around the raccoon, wrapping around him tightly and pinning his arms tight against his side. Rocket let out a muffled snarl of indignation, but Peter didn't have time to focus on him. Nebula and Drax had already shot forward after Gamora, who had reached the far ship at the same time, and Peter began firing straight for Korath in a flurry of shots that were more rapid than well aimed, but they did the trick.
Korath was forced to retreat several steps back towards his ship, and Gamora ducked to the side, making room between herself and Korath's forces under the guise of dodging Peter's fire. Nebula reached her first, weapons drawn and connected into a staff which she used to drive her sister even further away from Korath's ship and his soldiers, which were caught between trying to assist Gamora and shield Korath from Peter's ongoing assault.
Groot still had Rocket caged in one hand and was using his other to form a sort of wall for Peter to duck behind and fire through. Between lining up shots, Peter saw Drax drive elbow-first into Gamora's side, slamming her into the ground in a move that probably would have broken some ribs were he not holding back. It still stunned her enough to allow him to grab her by the still-bound arms and haul her after himself as he sped back towards the ship. Nebula followed behind them, drawing a pistol she had brought with her and firing back to cover their retreat.
Korath, seeming to finally realize what they were doing, gave a loud shout and ducked behind one of his soldiers, using them as cover as he lined up a shot at the retreating trio with his heavy blaster. The rest of his crew renewed their efforts as well, focusing on Peter and forcing him to duck behind the wall Groot was building.
"Damnit!" Peter screamed over the sound of the enemy fire turning Groot's arm into mulch. "Groot, buddy, I need another opening."
"I am Groot!" The vines next to his face shifted to open up a narrow slit for him to fire through. Through the gap, Peter could make out Korath aiming straight for Drax, but couldn't line up his own shot through the chunks of wood and sawdust pinging off his mask.
"C'monC'monCmon," he hissed, getting ready to just take his chances over the top again when a fresh wave of shots rained down from the sky, scattering Korath's forces and forcing him to retreat to the cover of his ship. Their reinforcements had arrived, and Drax and Nebula redoubled their efforts to return to the ship, dragging a half-struggling Gamora behind them through the volley of ship's fire.
"YES!" he shouted, leaping back to his feet as they reached the ramp and sprinting for the flight deck, vaulting up the steps and diving for the pilot's chair as he deactivated his mask. "Grab a hold of something!" he yelled back as he mashed the button for the ramp and began to pull the ship from the ground. "It's gonna get a bit bumpy!"
Strange ships that must have been from Korath's fleet were already heading in, peeling off from another portion of the same asteroid belt the Ravagers and Cosmo's crew had come from and descending upon the fray like a swarm of bats. By the time the Milano was air born and up to speed, the enemy ships were mixing into the M-ships, scattering their formation, and forcing Peter to keep low as he skimmed over the unremarkable surface of the planet and searched for an opening he could squeeze through to get to the jump point buried in the asteroid belt above.
"What's going on?" Nebula's voice rang out as she and Gamora joined him on the flight deck. Nebula beat out her sister by a few inches for the co-pilot's chair. "Why aren't we off-planet yet?"
Gamora, who's hands were unbound now, gave her sister a reproachful glare before grabbing a hold of one of the oh-shit straps instead. Behind him, the heavy pounding of boots heralded Drax's approach as he took control of the weapons system in the third seat.
"I'm trying, but I can't find a hole to get through," Peter ground out, darting towards a brief gap of red-sky between a trio of M-ships, only to have to give up and roll out of the way when a Kree battle ship darted straight down through the gap, firing at the Milano and nearly colliding with them midair. "Damnit!"
"Horuz!" Peter called, activating his communicator. "What the hell is going on? I can't get into the air!"
"They're bottling us in from above," Horuz's voice crackled back, sounding strained even through the static. "We're try'na punch through, but they got some sorta heavy shields up. Try goin' around. We'll keep you covered from above."
"Something's wrong," Gamora said, leaning forward and craning her neck to peer up at the cover of ships through narrowed eyes. "There's too many of them, and this maneuver is too advanced for Korath's fleet to execute so well."
"And Korath doesn't have any Black Cruisers," Nebula added darkly, staring at something off to their right. Peter risked a glance at what she was looking at, and found a handful of very sleek, very fast looking ships skimming low to the ground and heading straight for the Milano.
Peter hastily steered them away, aiming for a mountain range that bordered the wide, flat, valley they were in. Korath's suspiciously agile fleet was using the open land that Peter had initially thought was too big and open for an ambush as a sort of pot, and their ships were the lid keeping them from escaping. If he could make it to the edges, he could use the uneven mountains as cover to try to get above the fleet and into the open sky.
Whatever those Black Cruisers were, they were fast. They quickly outpaced the Milano, cutting fearlessly through the wild shots raining down from the skirmish above and boxing them against the rocky wall of the steep Canyon-like edges of the mountains.
"Why haven't they taken us out yet?" Gamora asked as the ships drew so close Peter might have been able to see the pilots through the windshield if he wasn't so busy looking for an exit as their pursuers pressed them even closer along the wall.
"It doesn't matter!" he cried out in relief as he saw a narrow gap that looked like a river had cut a smaller valley through the mountains ahead. "We can lose them in the mountains."
"In the...? WAIT-!" Nebula's warning came too late, Peter was already making a desperate dive for the opening, twisting the ship onto its side and giving a whoop of triumph as he shot through before the Cruisers seemed to realize what he was doing.
His triumph was replaced with horror as the narrow gap opened up into a smaller valley where a new fleet of those strange sleek ships were waiting for them.
"SHIT!" Peter screamed, yanking the controls straight up, but it was much too late. A handful of Cruisers peeled off from where they were hovering like bats around the edges of the new canyon, and the group that had herded them in here spilled in from behind.
A barrage of heavy fire tore their shields apart like tissue paper, setting off nearly every alarm his ship had at once. As Peter turned the Milano's nose down in a desperate dive towards the sloping edge of the sandy valley floor, the shields fell completely and something big struck the side of the flight deck with an explosion that tore a hole through half of the windshield and reduced the wall behind Gamora to twisted wreckage. The blast and sudden rush of wind was cut through by a scream.
Peter risked another glance and felt his blood run cold. The shrapnel from the blast had struck Gamora, who had been closest to that wall. Dozens of smaller metal strips has sliced through her skin, some pieces still sticking out of her arm which was shielding her face, like a pincushion, and a thick twisted hunk of the ship's paneling was sticking out of her side, just above her right hip which was already turning dark with blood underneath the hand pressed against it.
His brain hardly had the time to process what he was seeing when a second blast struck from the other direction, rocking the ship on its side. It seemed to happen in slow motion; the ship was tipping, and Gamora, who had released the strap to cover her head from the first blast slipped towards the gaping hole behind her. The flash of surprise in her eyes was burned into his mind even as she was tossed into the open sky and vanished.
"GAMORA!" he screamed, struggling out of his seatbelt.
"Damnit!" Nebula spat, leaping from her own seat as he sprung past to grab him by the back of his jacket and fling him back into his seat.
"STAY HERE!" she shouted over the screeching wind. "I'll get her."
"Drax, take the controls!" Peter ignored Nebula's orders and leapt from his chair again as she dove after her sister, but hardly a moment after she vanished, a shimmering light closed over the hole like a force field, blocking the wind out and Peter in.
"Cosmo, what are you doing!?" he demanded, pounding against the bright field and trying to steal glances of the assassins as Drax swerved and dipped haphazardly through their flock of pursuers. They had, thankfully, been relatively close to the ground, and between the twists and turns he caught glimpses of Gamora slowing her decent by driving her Godslayer into the wing of one of the mysterious Cruisers, and landing in a tumble in the dusty sand. "Let me out!"
Cosmo is sorry, brother Peter, but is not wise. Let blue friend retrieve her sister, we must continue.
"They're going to get killed!" he heaved. Foot soldiers had been hiding in the crevices of the valley walls. Peter watched in dawning horror as they swarmed down the wall and into the clearing towards the plumes of dust where his teammates had landed.
Green friend is in no danger here, and Blue friend will be alright. Cosmo has already alerted allies. Reinforcements are on way to pick them up. Best we can do is keep going and draw attention away from them.
"Gamora's injured!" Another blast rocked the ship and Peter caught a glimpse of Gamora pulling herself to her feet and making a break towards the direction from which they'd come. Nebula was closing the distance between them when the soldiers closed in and Peter lost sight of them both behind the swarming black bodies.
"Shit! Gamora!" Peter switched his mic back on. "Gamora, can you hear me?"
"Quill!" Drax's voice blared out behind him.
"Gamora!"
"QUILL!" Drax tried again.
"Nebula!? Someone answer!"
"Enough!" A large hand wrapped around his arm in a bruising grip and yanked him down into the co-pilot's seat. "You must focus!"
Drax had moved into the pilot's seat and was struggling to keep them airborne as the swarm of cruisers closed in tight in what was clearly a well practiced maneuver, boxing them in and forcing them to descend. Cosmo shoved himself between the two seats, eyes still glowing with the effort of holding the ship together.
Cosmo is doing best to shield ship, but they are trying to force us to land.
A proximity alarm was going off, alerting Peter to the impending crash and prompting him to engage the landing gear. Peter flicked the prompt aside and grabbed the controls. Drax gladly turned the steering over to him and re-activated the weapons system instead.
"Do you think you can manage if I try to punch through these guys?" Peter asked as he watched Drax's attempts to hit them with the ship's weapons glance off the Cruiser's sleek sides harmlessly. They were really getting uncomfortably close to the ground and Peter wanted to get out of this death box they were trapped in.
Do what you must. The light in Cosmo's eyes seemed to glow a bit brighter, and the shimmer started to overtake his body again like it had on Knowhere. Cosmo will hold us together.
"Okay." Hopefully Groot was holding on to something down in the common room. Peter angled the wing of the Milano towards the narrow gap between two of the Cruisers and began pulling them to the side, driving the wing like a wedge between the two ships and wincing at the screech of the panels sliding over each other. The horrible crunch of warping metal accompanied the whine of the Milano's struggling engines as the enemy ships pressed back against the ship that slid stubbornly between them.
"C'mon, baby, you can do this," he whispered as the Milano forced its bulk between the Cruisers. The other Cruisers seemed to realize what he was doing and folded in, pressing so close around them, that the windshield was blocked entirely and they were enveloped in darkness. The engines were screaming and the smell of burning was beginning to flood the cockpit, making his eyes water and his nose sting. "Son of a-"
In one co-ordinated movement, the ships below them peeled away and the ones on top shoved them down, decisively driving them the last small distance into a dune rising like a frozen wave from the valley floor. They hit with a bang, the nose catching in the sand and sending them flipping nose over tail and throwing up a massive spray of chalky red dust that obscured everything. Peter could do nothing but screw his eyes shut and pray that Cosmo could keep them from being torn apart.
Eventually the rolling stopped and Peter peeled his eyes open to asses the damage. The hull was washed in a dim orange, the only light filtering in through the heavy blanket of dust hanging in the air around them. The lights on the console and the noise of the engine were gone, and Peter had been in enough crashes to know that they weren't coming back online any time soon. His ears were ringing, and he was going to have some very deep bruises in the shape of the seat belts, but he'd live, through the crash at least. What was waiting for them next was another matter entirely.
Drax was looking much the same, and was working himself free of his own buckles already. Beside him, Cosmo had somehow managed to not be thrown around at all by the tumble, probably through his telekinetic powers, but as the ship settled into a slanted, though mostly upright position, the light enfolding his body faded away and the dog slumped heavily, his haunches hitting the floor and his head hanging as he panted.
"Cosmo, are you okay?"
Da. Even the voice in his head sounded a bit strained and little puffs of dust slipped through the gaps of the wavering field over the hole in the ship's side. Cosmo is alright. Just needs to catch breath.
"I am Groot?" Came the creaking voice from below, as Peter pulled himself from his seat as well.
"We had a bad landing. Get ready, I'm sure they won't give us long to recover."
Groot joined them in the flight deck, carrying in one arm a heavy tangle of branches that likely contained Rocket. Peter was glad to see that the colossus looked entirely unfazed by their hard landing. As he approached Peter, he paused to hold up his other hand, opening his fist to reveal the Orb cradled in his palm.
"I am Groot."
A wave of trepidation rolled through Peter's body at the sight of the Orb. That same unsettling feeling that chased him through his dreams seemed to arise whenever he laid eyes on the thing, but Groot was right. It was too dangerous to leave it behind, and the Milano was going nowhere fast.
"I am Groot?" Groot asked with a hint of concern when Peter's hesitation became obvious.
"No, I'm fine," he assured his friend, reaching out to accept it and shoving it into the pocket on the inside of his jacket where it rested, heavy and cold, against his side.
"Horuz? Chromoly?" Peter tried over the coms. "Can you hear me?"
"Quill?" He was met with the faded voice of Colonel Jakkeh instead. "What's your status?"
"We're down," he reported, glancing around at his remaining companions, the details of their faces becoming clearer as the dust around the ship began to settle and more light eked through.
"Injuries?" she prompted tightly. Through the link, Peter was pretty sure he could hear the sounds of the air battle going on around her.
"We're fine, but Gamora was hit and thrown from the ship. Nebula's with her. They're near where we entered the valley." Through the dust settling outside of the ship, a long dark shadow was beginning to form and Peter squinted as he tried to make sense of the wavering blob.
"Cosmo already alerted us. I've sent ships to locate them, but we're heavily outnumbered and outgunned up here." Through the static and distance, Peter could hear the strain in her voice.
"Yeah," Peter said absently as a breeze picked up and the dust rolled aside to reveal the dark blob had been a line of heavily armed soldiers in black uniforms that looked a bit fancier than what Korath usually brought with him. Standing at the center, his war hammer held proudly at his side like some sort of banner, was Ronan the Accuser. "I think we're feeling the same down here."
"Stay alive," Colonel Jakkeh ordered. The sounds of battle through the com were beginning to bleed into the real world as the Ravagers and Knowhere's forces must have made it through the opening to the smaller valley. "Help is on the way."

The Skrulls Take Temporary Shelter At The Rambeau Residence Where Talos Recovers From His Injuries And Once They Decide To Leave, Carol Decides To Go With Them To Help Them Find A New Home...
But Before She Leaves, She Gives Fury A Modified Transmitter/Pager To Call Her In The Event Of An Emergency As Fury Drafts The Protector Initiative Which Is Quickly Changed To Avenger Initiative When He Sees That Danvers Call Sign Was Avenger...
We Get A Mid Credits Scene, Which Sees The Remaining Avengers (Banner, Widow, Cap And Rhodey) Finding Fury's Pager And Analyzing It At The Avengers Facility Before Carol Herself Shows Up Asking Where Fury Is...
We Also Get An End Credits Scene Where We See Goose Spit Up The Tesseract On Fury's Desk While He Wasn't In His Office...
Which Still Doesn't Help The Continuity Problems In This Movie...
And That's Captain Marvel And...It's Okay...
While The Story Is So-So, The Characters Were Well Written (Despite Billions Of Anti-Feminists Hating On Brie Larson So Much That There's A Petition On-Line To Get Marvel To Fire Her)...
The Effects Were Great I Loved How Well They De-Aged Both Clark Gregg And Samuel L. Jackson And The Villain Was All Right With The Supreme Intelligence However I Would Have Preferred It If Jude Law Had Played Mar-Vell Instead Of Annette Benning...
Either Way Though I Say Don't Listen To The Haters And See It....
Till Next Time, This Is Duke, Signing Off

The Kree Starforce in Data East’s Avengers in Galactic Storm, feat. the Supreme Intelligence, Korath the Pursuer, Ms. Minerva, Ronan the Accuser and Att-Las, all of whom appeared in the Captain Marvel movie.
I was psyched when Ronan and Korath were first featured in Guardians of the Galaxy, I’m glad that at least Ronan is the front and center villain while Korath was relegated into the disposable mercenary enemy.
There lies the main problem with the Captain Marvel movie, none of the characters really left an impact. The Starforce members are basically glorified cameos which can be replaced by regular mooks with alien names. No solid set-up on why at least Ronan and Korath became the renegade zealots of the GotG, nor creative team-up of powers which was a perfected MCU staple for years. It’s as disappointing as Baron Strucker in Age of Ultron.
Case in point: Arnim Zola was an ancient computer in Winter Soldier, but he definitely resembled his source appearance. In the movie, there was no allusion to the tentacled-alien-head of Supremor, just a nebulous A.I. The Galactus Cloud in the FF 2007 movie definitely comes to mind.

"CAPTAIN MARVEL" (2019) Review
"CAPTAIN MARVEL" (2019) Review For several years, many movie fans, critics and feminists have criticized Disney Studios and Marvel Films for failing to green light a Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) film that starred a person of color or simply a woman. And for years, producer Kevin Feige have assured these critics that the studio was planning such a film for the franchise. Ironically, it took the plans of a comic book film from another studio for Feige to fulfill his promise.
Sometime in 2014 or 2015, Warner Brothers Studios announced it plans for a solo film featuring one of D.C. Comics' more famous characters, Wonder Woman. The character had first appeared in the 2016 movie, "BATMAN V. SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE" before moving on to a solo film. This decision by Warner Brothers and the success of the Wonder Woman film eventually led Feige to push forward his plans for a film about the Marvel Comics character, Black Panther aka King T'Challa of Wakanda. The character first appeared in the 2016 movie, "CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR", followed by a solo movie released in early 2018. Following the success of "BLACK PANTHER", Feige immediately set in motions for the MCU's first film with a female lead - "CAPTAIN MARVEL". The comic book origin of Captain Marvel is decidedly complex and a bit controversial. The first Captain Marvel was a Kree military officer named Mar-Vell, who becomes an ally of Earth. The second Captain Marvel was Monica Rambeau, an African-American police officer from New Orleans. She eventually became another costume heroine named Spectrum. Four more characters served the role as Captain Marvel - all of them aliens - before an Air Force officer named Carol Danvers became the sixth and most recent character to fill the role. Feige and Disney Studios had selected Danvers to be the first cinematic Captain Marvel. Directed and co-written by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, "CAPTAIN MARVEL" begins in the Kree Empire's capital planet of Hala in 1995, where a member of the Empire's Starforce, Vers, suffer from amnesia and recurring nightmares involving an older woman. Both her mentor and commander, Yon-Rogg; and the empire's ruler, an artificial intelligence named Supreme Intelligence her mentor and commander, trains her to control her abilities while the Supreme Intelligence, the artificial intelligence that rules the Kree, urges her to keep her emotions in check. During a Starforce mission to rescue an undercover operative from the Skrulls, a shape-shifting race that are engaged in a war against the Kree, Vers is captured. The Skrulls' commander, Talos, probes Vers's memories and discover that the individual they are looking for might be on Earth. Vers escapes and crash-lands in Los Angeles, where she meets S.H.I.E.L.D. agents Nick Fury and Phil Coulson. Vers recovers a crystal containing her extracted memories, which leads her and Fury to an Air Force base. There, they learn that the mysterious woman that Vers had been dreaming of and for whom the Skrulls are searching is a Doctor Wendy Lawson, a woman who was working on a S.H.I.E.L.D. project known as Project Pegasus (one of the Infinity Stones - the Tesseract). They also discover that Vers is actually a Human Air Force officer named Carol Danvers, who was also working on Project Pegasus . . . and who was reported dead six years earlier in 1989. Vers (or Danvers) and Fury set out to keep the Space Stone out of the Skrulls' hands and to learn more about her past and how she had ended up with the Kree. Many critics and fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) were doubtful that "CAPTAIN MARVEL" would prove to be a hit. After all, the movie's lead was a woman and the actress portraying her, Brie Larson, had a reputation for left-wing politics. Nevertheless, these doubting Thomases were proven wrong. "CAPTAIN MARVEL" went on to earn over one billion dollars at the box office. Did the movie deserve this kind of success? Hmmm . . . that is a good question. "CAPTAIN MARVEL" did not strike me as one of the best MCU movies I have seen. I could say that it is your typical comic book hero origin story. Somewhat. "CAPTAIN MARVEL" had the unusual distinction of starting midway into Carol Danvers' tale. In fact, screenwriters, which include directors Anna Fleck and Ryan Fleck; along with "GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY" co-writer Nicole Perlman; made the unusual choice of wrapping Carol's past and the circumstances of her amnesia in a cloud of mystery. Movie audiences were first given the peep into Carol's past during Talos' probe of her memories. Between the Project Pegasus file and Carol's reunion with her former best friend, former Air Force pilot Maria Rambeau, the mystery was finally cleared. A part of me admired the screenwriters' attempt to utilize this different narrative device to convey Carol's past. At least four other MCU films have utilized the flashback device (limited or otherwise) for their narratives. But "CAPTAIN MARVEL" is the only MCU movie in which the protagonist's past is written as a mystery. Another twist that the screenwriters had revealed concerned the identities of the film's antagonists - the Skrulls and their leader Talos. All I can say is that their goal turned out to be something of a surprise. "CAPTAIN MARVEL" featured some well done action sequences. I thought Boden and Fleck provided solid direction for most of the film's action scenes. I enjoyed such scenes like the Starforce's rescue attempt of their spy from the Skrulls, Carol and Fury's escape from the Air Force base and the Skrulls, and the film's final action sequence involving Carol, Fury, Maria Rambeau, the Starforce team and the Skrulls. But if I had to choose my favorite action sequence, it would be the Los Angeles chase sequence in which Carol encounters Fury, Coulson and other S.H.I.E.L.D. agents, while chasing the Skrulls. My head tells me that I should be more impressed by the final action sequence. But I simply found myself more impressed by that chase sequence in the movie's first half. What can I say about the performances in the movie? They were pretty solid. I seem to use that word a lot in describing my feelings about "CAPTAIN MARVEL". Well . . . I thought Brie Larson's performance as Carol Danvers aka Captain Marvel was more than solid. She seemed to take control of the character rather easily. And I thought she did a great job in combining certain aspects of Carol's personality - her ruthlessness, dry humor and flashes of insecurity. Although he had a brief appearance in the 2018 movie, "THE AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR", Samuel L. Jackson returned in full force as former S.H.I.E.L.D. director Nick Fury for the first time in nearly four years. Only in this film, he is a mere agent. Jackson's performance in this film proved to be a lot more humorous than in his previous MCU appearances. I also noticed that he and Larson, who had first appeared together in the 2017 movie, "KONG: SKULL ISLAND", managed to create a very strong screen chemistry. Another memorable performance came from Ben Mendelsohn, who portrayed the Skulls' leader, Talos. Thanks to Mendelsohn's skillful performance, Talos proved to be one of the most subtle and manipulative antagonists in the MCU franchise. Other performances that caught my eye came from Lashana Lynch, who portrayed Carol's oldest friends and former Air Force pilot, Maria Rambeau. Does that name sound familiar? It should. In the movie, Maria is the mother of Monica Rambeau, the first woman Captain Marvel . . . at least in the comics. Lynch gave a subtle and skillful performance that portrayed Maria as a pragmatic and reserve woman with a dry sense of humor. Jude Law was convincingly intense as Carol's Starforce commander and mentor, Yon-Rogg, who was unfailingly devoted to the Kree Empire and who also happened to be searching for the missing Carol. "CAPTAIN MARVEL" also featured competent performances from the likes of Clark Gregg as S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent Phil Coulson, Gemma Chan as Starforce sniper Minn-Erva, Vik Sahay as Hero Torfan and Annette Bening, who portrayed Kree scientist Mar-Vell aka Dr. Wendy Lawson and provided the voice for the Kree Supreme Intelligence A.I. Akira and Azari Akbar portrayed the young and feisty Monica Rambeau at ages eleven and five respectively. Also, Djimon Hounsou and Lee Pace (both who had been in 2014's "GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY") reprised their roles as Korath the Pursuer and Ronan the Accuser. Only in this film, Korath was a member of Starforce and Ronan had yet to become a homicidal political extremist. Do not get me wrong. I enjoyed "CAPTAIN MARVEL". And I do plan to purchase a DVD copy as soon as possible. But . . . it is not perfect. And it is not one of my favorite MCU films. One, I wish this movie had not been set in the past. I do not think that Andy Nicholson's production designs, along with Lauri Gaffin's set decorations and the art direction team had convincingly recaptured the late 1980s and the mid 1990s. Honestly, I have seen other movies and television shows that did a better job. I understand that Carol Danvers was an Air Force officer before she became Vers and later Captain Marvel. But I found the movie's pro-military atmosphere a bit jarring and uncomfortable. I do not understand why Disney Studios thought it was necessary to allow the U.S. Air Force to have so much influence on the film. I understand that the filmmakers had hired Kenneth Mitchell to portray Carol's father, Joseph Danvers. Why did they even bother? Mitchell was wasted in this film. He was for at least a second or two in a montage featuring Carol's memories. And he had one or two lines. What a waste of a good actor! And if I must be brutally honest, I found the movie's pacing rather uneven . . . especially in the firs thirty minutes and in the last half hour. And as much as I enjoyed some of the action sequences, my enjoyment was limited by the film's confusing editing, which has become typical of the MCU. Despite being a woman - and a progressive one at that - I found that entire moment with Captain Marvel kicking ass to the tune of Gwen Stefani's 1995 song, "Just a Girl" rather cringe worthy. The MCU has proven lately that when it comes to promoting feminine empowerment, the franchise can be rather shallow and subtle as a sledge hammer. My biggest problems with "CAPTAIN MARVEL" proved to be its inconsistent writing - a trait that has become a hallmark of the MCU in the past several years. On "AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D." Phil Coulson had informed his team that Nick Fury had recruited him into the agency, while he was in college. That should have occurred at least 10 years before this film's setting. Yet, Clark Gregg had portrayed Coulson as if the latter was a newbie agent. And to be brutally honest, Gregg's presence in the movie proved to be rather limited. Unfortunately. Speaking of S.H.I.E.L.D., why did Fury, Coulson and other S.H.I.E.L.D. agents appear at that Radio Shack store after a security guard had reported her presence? Why? Before Fury's discovery of the Skrulls' presence, S.H.I.E.L.D. was more focused on unusual scientific projects. There is also the matter of the Tesseract aka the Space Stone. Apparently, the Infinity stone, which was discovered and lost by HYDRA leader Johann Schmidt in 1942 and 1945 respectively, was discovered by S.S.R. scientist and future S.H.I.E.L.D. founder Howard Stark in 1945. S.H.I.E.L.D. kept that stone for over 40 years until it became part of a joint S.H.I.E.L.D./Air Force operation in the late 1980s called Project Pegasus. Seriously? Why would such a secretive agency like S.H.I.E.L.D. even share knowledge of the Tesseract with the U.S. Air Force, let alone allow a non-S.H.I.E.L.D. scientist (Dr. Lawson) and two junior test pilots (Carol and Maria) be the main participants in this project? Movie audiences also discover how Nick Fury had lost his eye. I want to state how his eye was lost, but I am too disgusted to do so. Okay . . . Dr. Lawson aka Mar-Vell's space cat (or whatever the hell it is) named Goose had scratched out his left eye. That is correct. Fury's speech about trust issues in "CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER" originated with a space cat that scratched out his eye, because he got too friendly with it. Jesus Christ! Talk about taking an important character moment for Fury in one film and transforming it into a joke in another, five years later. In doing so, both Boden and Fleck came dangerously close to neutering his character. They, along with Kevin Feige, actually managed to accomplish this with the Monica Rambeau character. They took Marvel Comics' first female Captain Marvel and transformed her into a child, who happened to be the daughter of Carol Danvers' best friend. I found this both frustrating and disturbing. Earlier, I had complained about the movie's 1989-1995 setting. I have a few questions in regard to portraying Captain Marvel's origin during this setting. If Captain Marvel had been around since 1995, why did Nick Fury wait so long to summon her? He did not summon her until the chaos surrounding Thanos' Snap in "THE AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR" began to manifest . . . twenty-three years later, as shown in one of the film's post-credit scenes. If Captain Marvel had been saving the universe during those past twenty-three years, where was she when Ronan the Accuser had threatened to destroy Xandar in "GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY"? Where was she when Ego had threatened the universe in "GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY, VOL. 2"? Where was she when the Dark Elves had attacked both Asgard and Earth in order to get their hands on the Aether (or Reality Stone) in "THOR: THE DARK WORLD"? Where was she when Loki and the Chitauri attempted to invade Earth in "THE AVENGERS"? Where was she when Ultron threatened the Earth in "THE AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON"? Where was she during all of these major galactic crisis? The more I think about this, the more I realize that Carol's origin story should have been set after the recent MCU film, "THE AVENGERS: ENDGAME". Despite my complaints about "CAPTAIN MARVEL", I did enjoy it. The movie had enough virtues for me to do so, especially an entertaining adventure set in both outer space and on Earth. I also thought the screenwriters, which included directors Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck had created an engaging and interesting mystery that surrounded the protagonist's past and origin of her abilities."CAPTAIN MARVEL" also featured some impressive action sequences and first-rate performances from a cast led by Brie Larson. I do look forward to seeing this movie again.

Ridiculous "Captain Marvel" predictions/theories
At some point in the movie Carol listens to the song "O-o-h Child" by the Five Stairsteps, and Ronan the Accuser overhears it and secretly kinda likes it. Which is why in Guardians of the Galaxy when Peter Quill starts singing it on Xandar, Ronan stops dead in his tracks and looks shocked/bewildered. The song reminds him of his time working with Carol in Starforce.
Nick Fury loses his eye to Korath the Pursuer, and likewise Korath's head gets injured by Fury, requiring the cybernetic enhancements he has in GotG.
Coulson is a Skrull or Kree agent/mole, but Fury uses a Kree brainwashing/memory-wiping thing (that appears to be used on Capt. Marvel in the trailer) to make him think he's human.

Captain Marvel Will Reveal Coulson’s (Strategic Homeland Intervention Enforcement and Logistics Division (S.H.I.E.L.D.) Origins Clark Gregg says Captain Marvel will explore Agent Coulson's early history as a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent. As the film is set in the 1990s, this will be the closest fans have gotten so far to an Agent Coulson origin story. Directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, Captain Marvel stars Brie Larson as Carol Danvers, a U.S. Air Force pilot who develops super powers after having her DNA fused with an alien. As an adaption of the Kree-Skull War, Captain Marvel will send Carol Danvers on a cosmic adventure that may introduce a key Marvel character: Mar-Vell, the original Captain Marvel. The film will also feature a number of established MCU characters, including Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson), Agent Coulson (Gregg), Korath the Pursuer (Djimon Hounsou), and Ronan the Accuser (Lee Pace), and it will explore many of their early years. In an interview with EW, Clark Gregg talks about the character of Agent Coulson in Captain Marvel. Greggs refers to Coulson as "a bit of a new guy at S.H.I.E.L.D." and compares the character to the more experienced S.H.I.E.L.D. agent fans meet in the first MCU film, Iron Man. "He’s a lot younger. It’s the earliest we will have seen him, so when he says, ‘Mr. Stark, this isn’t my first rodeo’ in Iron Man, this is maybe the rodeo he’s talking about." It appears that Coulson's role in Captain Marvel will finally add context to the character's "rodeo" line. In his appearances in the Iron Man films, as well as Thor and The Avengers - not to mention Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. - Coulson has been portrayed as a person who is no stranger to bizarre occurrences. A brush with a superhero, the Kree, or the Skrulls in Captain Marvel could provide an explanation for that. It seems only fitting that Coulson will be "a new guy at S.H.I.E.L.D." in the upcoming movie, considering that the movie will take place more than 20 years before the events of the first Iron Man. Audiences already know that Coulson may be de-aged in the film, but it's not yet clear how much younger he'll appear. Fans are excited to see Coulson in Captain Marvel, as the film will be the character's first role in an MCU movie since his death at the hands of Loki in The Avengers. Since the MCU and the Avengers have "moved on" from Coulson, and have so far ignored Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., it eventually became apparent that Coulson's place in the MCU would continue to be relegated to TV. However, that's not exactly the case. Thanks to Captain Marvel, fans will be able to see a new side of Agent Coulson, one that may add even more layers to the character.

MOONAGE DAYDREAM Chapter One
Word Count: 2,760
Summary: Being trapped on a spaceship with an intergalactic pirate wasn’t as bad as you had originally thought it might be, but a mechanic from Xandar and a Ravager-gone-rogue from Terra quickly turned into a story for the ages. Quill infuriated you until, one day, you found out why he has always annoyed you.
Pairings: Peter Quill x Y/N Spencer
Warnings: Language
Parts: Part 1 (you are here) / Part 2 / Part 3 / etc.
“This is your fault, Star-Prince.”
The words were muttered from your mouth before you realized they were being said. You’d always had a bad habit of speaking before thinking, and you’d always paid for it. Thankfully, being in the company of a self-proclaimed superhero wasn’t as bad as you’d originally thought.
It started on Knowhere, where you were a mechanic. Your boredom had gotten the best of you one day, and you began to walk around the city-scaped planet in a desperate attempt for something fun to happen. Unfortunately, the only “fun” thing to do was put up with Peter Quill’s cocky attitude as he asked you to fix his ship. If it weren’t for the fact that you were in desperate need of the units, you would’ve told the space pirate to bug off and go look for help elsewhere.
That was two years ago. Peter took a liking to you and convinced you to come on board of his precious Milano, becoming his partner in crime. Of course, you hated the man, but that didn’t stop you from finding him surprisingly attractive; but, you hated yourself for it.
Peter turned to look at you, a small smirk appearing on his chiseled face, and his honey-colored eyes glistened with mischief. "C'mon, Princess. What harm will this one teeny-tiny, harmless mission do?"
You decided to run your hands through your dark brown hair, pulling it into a long ponytail. "Quill, I swear to God, if you make one more promise to me about this being a harmless mission and it goes haywire, I'm going to punch you." He knew better than to mess with you, as you were a tough mechanic who worked out regularly.
Peter rebutted with the snide comment, "It's just Morag," before sliding out of his pilot's seat and strutting towards the back of the ship. Sure, it's just Morag; before this, it was just Fraindol, before that just Hainstrül, and so on, every time being worse than the last.
You follow Peter to the back of his ship, slipping on your dark purple leather coat. He turns to send you a smile before opening the bay door and stepping onto the barren planet. You follow cautiously, watching as Peter clicks the button under his right ear and his mask appears across his face. "If it's 'just Morag'," you mock, "why did you put your helmet on?"
"Because you can never be sure, Y/N," your partner clarifies, his voice muffled by the mask. You keep one hand close to your thigh holster, prepared to grab your gun as soon as possible in case of danger. You couldn't be blamed for your paranoia--every other mission Peter Quill took you on always ended in gunfire. "I think this is it."
You both approach a dark cavern, apparently empty of communicable life. Extraterrestrial lizards were scurrying back and forth across a clear-cut path towards a set of intimidating double doors. You assumed the bounty you were sent to collect was hidden behind those doors and began to walk forward. You pass Peter who is fumbling with the Walkman on his belt. Come and Get Your Love by Redbone began playing and you couldn't help but sway your hips to the tune as you walk along the path. You turn around to see Peter dancing as well, his fist in the air as he bumps it to the beat. He approaches you quickly and you laugh as he takes your hand, leading you around the cavern in a silly hopping dance. He twirls you out carefully, but you spin too fast and your right shoulder collides with a hard wall. "Ow," you moan as you look at the surface you ran into.
Without even realizing, you and Peter had reached the doors. He walked up with a bit of swagger in his step, as though sending a silent 'I told you this would be easy,' and pushed them open with ease.
To you, this was all incredibly anticlimactic. A metal orb sat behind the doors on a pedestal. "What the hell is that thing," you asked in disbelief.
Peter shook his head as he stepped forward to grab it. "I have no idea, Y/N, but apparently it's important enough for someone to be willing to pay two hundred mil for it."
You still gawk at the price, even though you'd heard it a million times already. Two hundred million units. You'd be set for life! You could buy your own spaceship, fly wherever you wanted and start your life on one planet instead of hopping from place to place.
"What are you waiting for, Star-Prince?" you tease, utilizing the nickname you'd given him the day you two met.
He shoots you a look. "Would you stop calling me that?"
You shrug. "Only if you want me to downgrade to Star-Dick."
"Trust me, Princess. This dick would have you seeing stars."
You gag in feigned disgust. "Quill, I see enough stars as it is. In fact, I'm so tired of stars I'll be glad if your dick comes nowhere near me." It didn't make sense, but you don't care. "Get that damned orb and let's get the hell out of here!"
You hiss the last few words and Peter laughs, giving in to your whines and stepping towards the orb. He grabs it quickly and turns around, a grin on his face, but it quickly disappears when he looks behind you.
"Well, fuck," you whisper, closing your eyes and taking a deep breath.
"Drop the orb!" a powerful voice booms from the entrance of the cavern, echoing around the slick walls with such force to shake your bones. You turn slowly to see a familiar face: Korath.
Korath the Pursuer works for Ronan the Accuser, trained alongside two of the daughters of Thanos, and was known for the death toll he wrought on uncooperative cities. Just a week ago, you and Peter had heard that Korath had led a platoon of Sakaarans to take Nebula and Gamora, the two daughters he trained alongside, to Praxius IX. You two weren’t sure at the time what Korath was looking for, yet you assume he was looking for the orb the two of you just found--your assumption was confirmed by the rather large gun pointed in your direction.
“Uh, hey,” you say nervously.
Korath ignored me as his cronies come closer to myself and Peter. “Drop it, now!” he demands again. His henchman approaches you as you twist to look at Quill, who is watching you with concerned eyes.
“Hey, hey!” Peter shouts, pulling Korath’s attention. “Cool, man. No problem.” He slowly sets the orb down on the rocks he stands on before standing up straight again, arms still raised. The henchmen watching Peter step closer to him, guns raised. He looks at you again, his honey eyes locked on yours. “No problem at all.”
One of the henchmen watching Peter picks up the orb and tosses it to Korath, and you watch as it flies through the air. “How do you know about this?” Korath demands as he catches it.
You answer before Peter has the chance to fuck this up any more than it already is. “We don’t even know what that is. We’re just junkers, man. We were just…” you thought of an excuse that the assassin might buy, “...just checking stuff out.”
“You don’t look like junkers,” Korath confronts. “You’re wearing Ravager garb.”
Standing up a little straighter, you realize he’s right. How the hell are you supposed to dig yourselves out of this one? “This is just an outfit, man,” Peter answers, much to your relief. A henchman pokes his shoulder and he mutters, “Ninja Turtle, you better stop poking me.”
“What are your names?” Korath questions with the same booming voice he’s been using, this time with more urgency.
He begins to walk towards you; meanwhile, Peter speeds to answer before anything happens to you. “My name is Peter Quill, okay? And--and this is Y/N Spencer.”
Korath seems to accept Peter’s answer but reaches for your arm. “Hey!” you shout in protest, attempting to rip your arm from his grip.
“Move!”
“Why?” Peter struggles against the henchmen holding him back from stepping between you and Korath. He’d always been protective of you since you ran away from Knowhere with him.
“Ronan may have questions for you.” Korath’s answer was short but passed through gritted teeth.
You, having the ability to read people clearer than they can read themselves, froze; Peter of all people knew that when you wanted to pick someone apart mentally, there was no getting you to comply with anything. “You’re afraid of him.” Korath attempted to counter, but you cut him off. “You--you don’t want to follow his rule. You, Korath the Pursuer, are under the control of Ronan the Accuser, but you’ve never been under control a day in your life. You control others, so I ask you: what are you doing following Ronan?”
Korath seemed to become angry at this assumption and turns away from you. He begins to stomp away but stops once Peter Quill opens his infamous large mouth once again. “Hey, you know what? There’s another name you might know me by.” You roll your eyes and fight back a groan as Korath turns on his heel. Once Peter has the attention of everyone in the room on him, you realize he’s trying to escape. Your right hand twitches next to your blaster, the trigger-happy index finger dying for a chance to show it’s skill. “Star-Lord.”
Everyone in the room falls silent. Korath tilts his head a little, his white eyes boring into Peter’s. “Who?”
Peter sighs heavily. “Star-Lord, man.” With no response, he continues. “Legendary outlaw.” He then looks at the henchmen next to him. “And she’s--”
“Don’t drag me into this. I’d rather answer to Ronan.” Your comment was meant as a joke but it came off harsher than intended. You mouthed sorry to Peter and let your right hand get even closer to the blaster.
Peter sees your hand and gives you a small smile--undetectable to anyone who he hadn’t spent the past two years with. “Ah, forget this.”
He draws his blasters and you do the same, first shooting the henchman behind you then Korath. He drops the orb and you retrieve it, sprinting up the steps towards Peter, who had dropped both of his henchmen. Behind you, Korath rose to his feet and shot at you, missing by mere inches. Peter’s arm wraps around your waist and you throw your arms around his neck. He turns on his rocket boots and flies backward through the back wall of the cavern, shooting at Korath behind you. When you land outside (very ungracefully, as the pain in your shoulder disagreed with your rough landing), you both sprint to the Milano.
Korath and his men shoot repeatedly at the ship as Peter pulls away from the planet, yet loses control and drops with the gravitational pull. “Quill!” you scream as the ship plummets towards the ground. He manages to pull the controls up and the ship hovers inches from the planet’s surface before you both get thrown back from the impact of takeoff.
You stand from the spot you’d fallen to and brush off your jacket. “Star-Prince, I’m going to kill you.”
He chuckles. “Like I said, it’s just Morag.”
“Peter?” We both turn to see a pink-skinned woman emerging from Peter’s bedroom. You excuse yourself to the kitchen so they can catch up on the events of last night.
Quill’s flings never bothered you before, but in the past few months, you’ve realized how annoying it is to go on missions, only to come back and find that he’s forgotten about the body still lying in his bed. Civilian casualties are not something you need nor want on your record, yet Peter doesn’t seem to understand. It’s Peter’s ship, sure; but, it’s your shared space. It’s what you call home. You don’t bring men onto the ship for one-night-stands then forget all about them mere minutes after you wake up in the morning. Then again, you’ve always been horrible at one-night-stands. You’ve always wanted something real in life, and a small part of you has hoped for the last two years that it would be with Peter--yet with every girl who walked out of his room on mornings like this, that part of you shrunk, knowing that you’d never end up with Peter. You just weren’t his type.
Munching on an alien fruit you and Peter had picked up on Xandar when you’d made the deal to pick up the orb (you’d long forgotten the complicated name), you watched the news monitor mounted to the wall. You turn up the volume as the reporter discusses Kree information, and Peter and the Fling enter the kitchen. “Scattered riots broke out across the Kree Empire today protesting the recent peace treaty signed by the Kree Emperor and Xandar’s Nova Prime.”
“Um, you have a call,” the Fling says, but before Peter has a chance to stop her, a familiar blue face appears on the screen.
You and Peter had grown accustomed to the ugly mug of Yondu Udonta, but the blue-skinned, yellow-toothed Ravager captain was more pissed off than usual. You’d always been afraid of Yondu since you and Peter teamed up, but you never let it show.
“Quill!” Yondu shouts. “Spencer!”
“Hey, Yondu,” you say casually, leaning against the kitchen table as Peter sighs heavily. You know he’s wishing he could miraculously teleport himself anywhere but here.
Yondu grits his teeth. “I’m here on Morag. Ain’t no orb, ain’t no you.”
Peter put on a smile. “Well, I was in the neighborhood.” His tone was friendly and innocent, but you knew he was hiding a sassy remark of his own. “I thought I’d save you the hassle.”
“Well, where you at now, kids?” The blue man’s gravelly voice hadn’t changed a day since you first met him, and his blunt tone always rubbed you the wrong way.
You and Peter both exhale before you say, “I feel really bad about this, Yondu, but we’re not gonna tell you that.” You see Peter smile slightly in your peripheral vision and stand a little straighter.
“I slaved putting this deal together--”
“‘Slaved’?” Peter confronts. “Making a few calls is ‘slaved’?”
“--and now you’re gonna rip me off!”
The two of them talk over each other for a moment before Yondu takes a deep breath. “We do not do that to each other. We’re Ravagers, you and me. We got a code.”
You know Yondu is only referring to himself and Peter when he says, ‘We’re Ravagers, you and me,’ and it frankly pisses you off. You’d been working alongside Peter Quill for two years now, you’d proven your worth ten times over, yet you were still treated like an outsider by all of the Ravager factions. Your eyes shift to look away from the blue man on the screen and you let yourself steam.
Peter notices you turn away and argues with Yondu further. “Yeah, and that code is ‘steal from everybody’.”
“When I picked you up on Terra--”
“‘Picked me up’.”
“--these boys of mine wanted to eat you.”
“Yeah?” Peter taunts, clearly angry.
“They ain’t never tasted any Terran before. I stopped ‘em. You’re alive because of me! I will find you, I will--”
Silence fills the ship. You turn to the screen to see it filled with black. Peter had ended the call and was watching you with careful eyes. “You know he didn’t mean that, about you not being a Ravager,” he starts quietly, but you cut him off.
“He’s right.” You sigh heavily, letting the whir of the engine compete with the tension in the air. “I didn’t grow up a Ravager like you or Yondu or any of them. I’m an outsider. I don’t follow a code, and I don’t have a family.” You turn to look at Peter, finally meeting his eyes with your own. “I don’t need a family to know where I belong.”
Peter begins to open his mouth, but you continue. “Let’s just get this orb to Xandar. You can get the units and I’ll repair the ship from your shitty takeoff. You did some serious engine damage on Morag.”
You walked to your room and Peter stayed silent, wishing all the while he’d fought Yondu for your right alongside himself as Ravager when he’d had the chance.
