So excited to finally share the beautiful work that @stardisnight created for @pragmatic-optimist and me, based on a scene from the second chapter of By All Means, Rome.

Cristina was lovely and kind and so easy to work with. She truly captured the vibe of the scene, just as I had imagined it. Thank you, so, so much.

Roman Holiday Dreamling AU

Dream the young, ethereal prince on a goodwill tour of Europe. Hob the handsome reporter assigned to cover his trip. Dream, anxious and overstressed, running away from his responsibilities and the embassy and falling asleep in Hob’s taxi. Hob, taking him home and realizing the story of the century is snoozing in his spare pajamas.

they quote poetry at each other and ride around Rome on a Vespa and Dream gets a haircut and eats ice cream and has his one mad day in the sun, just living normal life like a young person should. Hob shows him the sights and takes him to a café and they go dancing. and they fall terribly, painfully in love, in just one day, because without realizing it they were, each of them, what the other was desperately looking for without even knowing it. they kiss, wet with river water and with tears, on the river bank after jumping off the barge. and again, dried off and aching with unnameable longing, in Hob’s little flat, and Dream wants so so badly to stay, to live this normal life, dancing and eating gelato and riding Vespas and kissing.

but Dream is, above all, a creature of function. of duty. and though he might have run away from his responsibilities once, when the time comes he is always going to return. so he returns. Hob drops him off around the corner from the embassy and they kiss one last time and Dream walks away without looking back.

and the next morning, at the press conference, Dream is perfectly composed, perfectly formal in his suit and gloves, even with his new haircut. and Hob is there, in the front row, and their eyes meet and they exchange an absolute novel of emotions in a few seconds’ worth of eye contact. and then Dream leaves, flanked by his attendants. and Hob lingers a moment in the gallery, and then he, too, walks away.

I have such a soft spot for somewhere in the heart of rome … I probably enjoy your below deck au just as much, but that one will always be special for me for how it evoked such a specific and beautiful vibe without ever over-explaining anything 🩵

DATE NIGHT A Roman Holiday ficlet "Ready to go?"

Kate glances up at Rick's voice, confused. "Go?" she repeats. "We're in a lockdown, Rick. We can't go anywhere."

Rick grins and holds out his hand. "Trust me."

She sighs and takes his hand, lets him pull her from the couch. She pauses when she sees the picnic basket by the door, but she follows Rick's lead and slips on her shoes.

Considering she basically moved in with a near-stranger at the beginning of a public health crisis, this past month has been about as good as it can be. And it improved dramatically when they relocated to Rick's Hamptons house last week when they started getting serious cabin fever.

She knows just how lucky she is.

When Rick pulls the car into a park twenty minutes from the house, she looks around in confusion. "What are we doing?"

"You'll see."

Her jaw drops when he backs the car into what looks to be a campground. But it isn't just a patch of dirt surrounded by trees; there are also Christmas lights strung up, and a large white sheet hanging between a couple trees.

She follows Rick out of the car, watches as he opens the trunk, revealing a pile of blankets, pillows, and a projector.

He unpacks the picnic basket, setting out a makeshift charcuterie board and bottle of wine, then climbs in and holds out his hand. "Join me for a movie?" he asks, motioning next to him.

She shakes her head in disbelief and grins before taking his hand and letting him help her into the car. "What are we watching?" she asks, nudging his elbow with hers.

He drops his arm around her shoulders and pulls her into his side. "Whatever you want."

In the end, it doesn't matter what movie she picks.

They don't pay attention.

Roman Holiday AU

Historical or modern-day AU

In which Irulan, who's a diligent, hard-working royal, is asked to rest and do something she enjoys for 24 hours. She's been on a whistle-stop tour of Thailand and has had no opportunity to see the sights. She leaves the embassy and falls asleep on a wall, where Paul, a photographer, finds her. Thinking she's drunk, he takes her home. Irulan is supposed to hold a press conference the next morning, which is postponed in her absence. Paul misses the press conference because he oversleeps, but when he sees Irulan's photo, he's certain he can get an interview with her... Follow the plot of Roman Holiday but in a new setting.

Wanted in all 4 kingdoms, behind over one hundred robberies, connections to at least one of the mafia heads in Mistral, Roman Torchwick has made quite the name for himself for someone that our department struggles to find records on.

What we do know is that, for the last seven months, Roman has been behind a string of Dust robberies of all things. In the past, criminal organizations have bought and stolen Dust in bulk before commiting large scale crimes, but the sheer scale at which Roman has been conducting his recent activities is unlike anything seen before. It's almost as if he's stealing Dust for the sake of it, or perhaps trying to create an artifical shortage.

At this rate, a detective is no longer needed to stop Torchwick. We need a huntsman.

Chapter One: Sweetness And Decency

Henry leans over the balcony railing and stares wistfully at the festivities overtaking the street below.

Twinkling lights hang between the trees as the sound of live music and laughter floats up to him. Couples dance, loose and easy, sleeves rolled up to elbows while skirts twist around legs and ankles.

It feels like unbridled happiness that Henry has always longed to be a part of, but he knows that he wouldn't know what to do with it if given the opportunity.

He's always been on the outside looking in, hanging back in the shadows as centuries of familial obligations bear down on him. He feels like he could collapse beneath the weight and tumble out of the embassy window. A beautiful prison fit for the king he'll never be.

RubyNeo accademy au?

waves oh so sweetly.... so basically my ruby/neo lady beat's AU (as much as i dont particularly care about rh) has the events of roman holiday happen during the time that WOULD be volume 1.

for timeline reasons: lady beat's starts in march/beacon starts in april. at the end of march trivia is taken to lady beat's by her mother and around the same time (roughly a week later) ruby is fighting torchwick in the street. (neo is 17, ruby is 15)

when glynda rescues ruby and ozpin comes to talk to her, noting her silver eyes, resemblance to summer, and connection to qrow (and therefore taiyang) he decides it would be far too dangerous to enroll her at beacon so early but it's also too dangerous to just leave her at signal (around 5 ish years prior is when that one student tragically loses her life at signal academy.) oz is worried that roman is working for salem and so he fears that salem will start looking for ruby within the huntsmen combat/upper academies. he and taiyang agree it will be safest to hide her in plain sight amongst the troubled girls of the upper class attending the preparatory school.

so two months into the semester, ruby is enrolled in the academy. trivia is intrigued by her but is certain that the other girls will make sure ruby avoids and hates her so she ignores ruby's initial attempts at friendship.

trivia finds ruby reading by herself one day and recognizes the book (the girl who fell through the world) and tentatively starts a conversation about it. ruby doesn't mind that trivia has to type out her questions and trivia likes that ruby doesn't ask why she doesnt talk. then ruby stops reading the book right before the final chapter where alyx makes it home and trivia asks her why? and ruby explains her mom was a huntress and when she was little promised to finish the story when she got home, but she never came home. so ruby can never finish the story.

the girls quickly become pretty close after that, and when the malachites destroy trivia's uniform, ruby helps her fix it.

trivia is a little protective over ruby because ruby is softer around the edges and so nice and she doesn't want to see the other girls hurt her because ruby can't tell when they're being cruel sometimes.

the spiders and roman are both working for salem in this AU btw. so when trivia and ruby sneak out to follow the malachites they find them meeting with roman and cinder and ruby tells trivia "those two...the man and woman...i fought them a few months ago..."

ruby and trivia spend the next few months trying to figure out this tangled web they've found themselves in until it all comes to a head during the volume 2 finale. they've been thorns in cinder and roman's sides for too long and so while cinder oversees the mountain glenn project, roman makes a deal with the vanilles to bring trivia back home since she still is not acting how they want her to, uses some of junior's men and hei xiong sr's weapons and kidnaps ruby, taking her to the vanille manor in hopes of luring trivia there. unfortunately for roman, ironwood's army is on direct orders to investigate every disturbance and it turns into a fire fight between the atlas military and roman.

ruby, trivia, and roman survive, carmel and jimmy do not. roman is arrested, and ironwood takes ruby and trivia to beacon to discuss what will happen with them. ozpin decides to just make the girls students as soon as the second semester is finished. to try and keep them safer ozpin gets them set up in a dorm on campus that would have been used by the CMSN team if this was in show canon.

during their time bumming around beacon, ruby helps trivia design hush, and they train together.

so volume 3 sees trivia and ruby joining in on team ABYS (Abyss, made of ilia, blake, yang, and weiss) and JNPR's wacky hijinks. cinder's team has also infiltrated the school and (with lionheart's help) faked an entire other student who is, oh so tragically, back in mistral with a horrific injury and simply cannot participate in the vytal tournament this year :(

the rest of the volume carries out basically the same as canon. beacon falls, ozpin dies, yang AND ilia go to try and help blake (yang still loses her arm, ilia barely manages to get all three of them out alive), weiss ruby and trivia go to beacon tower at jaune's urging to save pyrrha but they're too late. ruby unlocks her silver eyes.

trivia pulls a blake and takes off before ruby wakes up post Silver Eye Blast because she blames herself. if she hadn't pulled ruby into helping her tail the malachites and torchwick they would still be more or less safe within the prep school.

Yang and Ruby are Heavily Traumatized by these new abandonments and do NOT know how to talk to each other about it. and then ruby takes off.

volume 4 would see the split as:

yang, alone in vale

weiss, alone in atlas

blake, with ilia and sun in menagerie

ruby, heading to mistral. JNR tags along with her even though they don't know her as well in this AU because they need to feel like they're doing anything useful in the wake of pyrrha's death

brief flashes to trivia travelling on her own under the alias neopolitan, gathering information on the spiders and torchwick and trying to uncover who cinder is/who she's working for

then we come to volume 5! the Reunion Volume

neo catches wind of something brewing in mistral and starts heading that way. yang decides to seek out raven to find ruby faster than just searching every inch of land on the continent of anima. weiss runs away, hoping to find winter in mistral but her airship is downed. blake rallies the people of menagerie to aid the people of mistral. and ruby does her best to bond with JNR and oscar.

first reunion: weiss and yang

second reunion: weiss, yang, and RNJR

third reunion: qrow runs into neo while trying to find the huntsmen of mistral. nobody but ruby recognizes her on first sight. Things are Tense and Emotional for a bit. ruby is still upset trivia left her, neo is terrified that they're biting off more than they can chew.

blake and ilia return to the main crew!

the battle for haven proceeds as it did in canon, basically. neo is doing her best to help ruby and be her support in the fight, the tides truly start to turn when ilia and blake join the fray.

ilia defends jaune and weiss while jaune heals weiss. the first thing weiss sees when she opens her eyes is ilia's back and hears the SNAP of lightning lash and knows she's safe for another moment.

ABYS is reunited, with Weiss throwing her arms around Blake and Ilia and then dragging Yang in. Ruby and Neo stand off to the side and have a little reunion of their own

volume 6:

while ilia and jaune do their best to rally their teams behind them and do some Team Bonding, ruby and neo have a quiet moment to talk. the last two weeks have been trying so hard to get everyone up to speed with every one else, neo only now realizes she has to truly look up at ruby to meet her eyes, and tells her as much. she apologizes for leaving, ruby forgives her. ("i forgave you the moment you left and the instant you came back.") it's not all fixed but they're going to try.

WUH-OH BEE TENSION (ilia and weiss are sipping coffee and ignoring the other two. they'll work it out if ilia has to beat them over the head with a relationship self help book)

ruby fully uses her silver eyes for the second time to save neo, screaming out her name as the apathy take her down. (in a few moments maria's words would echo in her ears. think about the people who love you.)

ruby controls her power for the first time, grabs neo, and drags her out of the cellar.

volume 6 more or less continues as it did before. cinder finds herself teaming up with roman to hunt down ruby.

the bees kill adam.

ruby petrifies the leviathan and cordovin finishes it off.

they escape to atlas. (and neo pulls ruby off to a dark corner of the airship to check on her. was she okay? did she need anything? and ruby presses their foreheads together and tells her she's fine, they were okay. they were finally safe.)

cinder and roman follow.

MISCELLANEOUS OTHER STUFF BEFORE I PASS OUT SLEEPY STYLE:

Neo's birthday is December 21st, the winter solstice (so in this AU they have roughly a 22 month gap between them)

Ruby's 17th birthday still takes place between the end of volume 5 and beginning of volume 6, neo doesn't get a chance to give her a gift until the wardrobe update in volume 7 (it's a very simple pink and white braided bracelet. ruby keeps it in her belt pouch so she doesnt lose it in a fight)

ruby nearly kills roman in the volume 8 finale fight because he throws neo off the yellow brick road.

penny doesn't play as large a role because ruby literally doesn't know her.

roman severly injures neo after he lures them to the jabberwalker's acre and then uses ruby's distraction to set a bunch of the leaves of the tree on fire and force ruby to inhale the smoke + ascend because she thinks neo is dead.

the cat possesses neo because she regains consciousness as ruby "falls" into the tree.

okay im going to bed now good night i love you anon

roman chooses to ascend at the end upon realizing he has nothing waiting for him back in remnant as he is.

Holiday Plans (Monstrous Roommates AU fic)

So the thing is: Fireworks go boom.

There were raised voices in the kitchen, which was surprising. Thomas rose up out of his doze and headed over, more or less sitting on the kitchen pass through. All four of his roommates were gathered around the table, which had lots of pieces of paper on it, and Logan’s laptop to one side.  The paper proved to be a map of the surrounding area, from the looks of things printed off Google and patched together.

“-this does of course, not include people who have just gotten them somewhere and will let them off whenever they please.”

“Yeah but those are quieter.” Virgil countered. Patton whined uncomfortably, leaning against Roman. Roman was perched on the counter, and kissed Patton’s neck in response.

Virgil glared down at the paper. 

“We can’t do anything about those. So planning for them is out.”

“Barring weather conditions they’ll start here at eight forty five on the second, continuing here and here until ten at the latest.” He drew points on the map, and after a moment’s study, Virgil drew circles around them. 

“Again, the weather’ll change it, but that’s about the range.”

Thomas moved past them, and brushed up against Patton and Roman, letting them know he was there with a chill.

“Hello Thomas.” Roman said brightly, but looking in the wrong direction. 

“Over here.” Thomas corrected, pushing himself to become visible. “Sorry, went through you a little bit.” 

“So that’s what that was.” Patton gave a weak smile. 

“What’s going on?” Thomas asked. Over at the kitchen table, Logan and Virgil had changed pen colors, apparently, and were discussing the third. 

“Fourth of July plans.” Roman explained. 

“Ah, gonna find the best place to watch the fireworks?” 

Before anyone could answer, there was a sharp echoing bang somewhere down the street. Patton jumped and whined, fingernails looking at little dark and thick where he was holding on to Roman’s arms. 

There was a pause, then another bang. Outside there was a flash of light. 

“... firework.” Logan said after a moment. “Not gun.” 

“You’re sure?” Virgil asked. Logan nodded.  Now that he was looking, Logan looked a little strained as well, and Virgil was chewing on the cord to his hoodie. 

“Not quite.” Roman smiled at Thomas. “My beloveds do not care for fireworks. Logan is bothered by the lights, Patton is bothered by the sound, and Virgil hates both of them. Our last home was in the city, and the fireworks usually were set off at the edges, or more lost to the city sounds.”

“And assholes who shot ‘em off early got caught by the police. All cops may be bastards, but at least they knew a fire hazard when they saw it.” Virgil said grumpily. 

“We weren’t quite prepared for how… enthusiastic the area was last year.” Logan explained. “This year, I have made some charts, and Virgil is helping me estimate how far the sound will carry.” He frowned down at his map. “We’re in an overlap for no less than three displays- and four on the fourth itself, oddly enough.” 

“So I’m guessing no barbeque?” Thomas joked. 

“We will probably be leaving tomorrow morning.” Roman confirmed. “I quite like fireworks, but I wouldn’t want to leave them alone.” 

“You don’t have to.” Patton mumbled. “You could stay and have a blast.” he gave a weak smile. 

“Thank you, no.” He kissed the top of Patton’s head. “If I want to see fireworks, I’ll take a trip down to Disney.”

“Disney.” Virgil and Logan groaned together, and Virgil made another mark on the map, down at the edge. 

“I never thought it was an option.” Patton told Thomas. “When I was younger I just had to put up with it, because no one else seemed to have a problem.” 

“If we can’t find a good place, it’s going to be noise canceling headphones and a lan party this year.” Virgil grumbled. “I mean, fun, but I’d rather not be forced into it. But we don’t want to go too far, and we need someplace to stay. So it’s tricky.” he sighed. “I remember I liked the fireworks when I was a kid, but now it’s just too bright and loud.” 

Logan reached out and patted Virgil’s shoulder, staring down at the map. 

“Why don’t you guys go somewhere else entirely?” 

“Well, I’m still concerned about the epidemic, personally.” Logan pointed out. “Of the four of us, I am the most likely to contract a disease. Beyond that…” he shook his head. “It’s not as if we can travel far outside the United States in any good time. So anywhere we went we would be faced with the same problem. I think preparation like this is as good as it’s going to get.” 

“Last year of highschool, Logan and I went camping. We hiked for miles out into the wilderness.” Patton offered. 

“The stars were lovely.” Logan remembered. 

“Yeah, but you were so sore you could hardly walk back.” Patton gave a whine of concern. 

“We perhaps pushed too hard.”

“It took us twice as long to get back.” Patton admitted. “We ran out of food and I had to hunt. So even if we were near a big enough park, I don’t know if I’d wanna risk it.” 

“I should hope I’m in better shape now, with all the effort I put into physical therapy.” Logan huffed. “But I suppose it’s better not to take that risk.”

“I mean, I could probably carry you back, but I’m not a huge fan of camping in the first place.” Virgil said with a grimace.

“It sounds like you need an off highway motel. Most of those are further away from towns.” Thomas suggested. “If you had more time, you might be able to find like an island rental in the keys.”

“I vote that!” Roman said excitedly. “No fireworks for you and a beach for me!” 

“Yeah, sure.” Virgil said sarcastically. “You find one and I’ll put up with being on a boat.” 

Roman pulled out his phone and started typing, and Virgil rolled his eyes, going back to his intense map-marking with Logan. 

“Are you going to be okay Thomas?” Patton asked suddenly. 

“Yeah, I’m used to being alone.” Thomas admitted, flickering a little bit. He didn’t like it, but really, being a ghost lent itself to being lonesome.  From the expression on Patton’s face he felt bad about it. Logan and Virgil argued quietly about locations and populations. 

They were still at it a half an hour later, when Roman’s phone pinged and he looked at it.

“Ah-ha! I’ve got it!” 

“What?” Virgil looked surprised. 

“I put out some feelers- okay, Remy helped, and he and his mind-witch want to come as well.” Roman smiled brilliantly. “We have, should we want it, a private island for the week. With a nice little vacation home.” there was another ping. “Ah-” Roman’s shoulders shook as he laughed looking at the message. “Apparently it’s a summer home of someone Remy knows, and they go north for the Fourth. And it’s no longer optional. Remy says he’s going to show up at our door tomorrow. With a minivan.”

“If Remy’s willing to drive a minivan, it must be serious.” Virgil said with a straight face. 

“Ah well.” Logan looked at the map. “It was a fun mental exercise.”   He began folding up the map, and putting the pens into a cup. 

“We should go pack, I guess.” Virgil rubbed the back of his neck. “Sunscreen time.” 

“I wish you could come with us.” Patton told Thomas.

“Yeah. Me too.” he smiled, and faded out.
