Top 10 treks to do in Nepal for the highest elevation gain
Nepal is a country in the Himalayas. Eight out of the ten highest mountains are located in Nepal. These highest mountains have evolved the most diverse ecosystem on the planet. To embrace this rich nature hundreds of thousands of trekkers come to Nepal every year. Over a hundred trekking trails lead to the base camps, glaciers, high passes, alpine meadows, lakes, and villages with ancient lifestyles and beliefs. If you are looking for treks to go to the highest elevation, here are 10 treks that will lead you above 5000m. - Makalu Sherpeni Col Trek - 6143m - Tashi Lapcha Pass Trek - 5810m - Everest Base Camp Trek - 5644m - Annapurna Circuit Trek - 5416m - Dhaulagiri Circuit Trek - 5360m - Upper Dolpo Trek - 5320m - Makalu Base Camp Trek - 5250m - Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek - 5143m - Langtang Ganjala Pass Trek - 5122m - Manaslu Circuit Trek - 5106m
1. Makalu Sherpeni Col Trek - 6143m
Mount Makalu 8436m, 5th tallest mountain in the world as seen from Sherpeni Col 6180m. Photograph by Mark Horrell, Flickr. Makalu Sherpeni Col trek or the Ice Col trek is the most difficult trek to do in Nepal that offers an elevation gain of 6143m in the Sherpani Col. The col separates the Makalu and Sagarmatha national parks. Week-long camping is required to cross the strenuous section between the Makalu base camp and the Chukkung village. It takes almost 3 weeks to complete this trek. The trek starts with a flight from Kathmandu to Tumlingtar airport in the Arun valley. Jeep drive to Num and the trail leads to the Makalu Barun national park and conservation area. The protected area got its name from the world’s fifth highest mount Makalu and Baruntse 7162m. You will trek through the villages inhabited by Rai and Limbu communities practicing Kiratism with their unique language, tradition, and costumes. After crossing mostly foggy and snowy Shipton La at an elevation of 4216m you will enter the exceptionally beautiful Barun valley. The trail follows along the Barun river through the alpine meadows to Makalu base camp. The trail heads further passing the Barun Pokhari at 5250m along the Barun glacier. You will pass the Sherpeni col just below the mount Baruntse and enter the hidden Hongku valley. From the valley, you will cross the Amphu Labtsa Pass at 5778m and get to the Chukkung village in the Everest region. From Chukkung you will trek back the popular Everest base camp route to Lukla for a flight back to Kathmandu.
2. Tashi Lapcha Pass Trek - 5810m
Trekkers climbing up towards the Tashi Lapcha pass from the Rolwaling side. Photography by Nabin Poudel. Tashi Lapcha Pass 5810m is the world’s second highest mountain pass after the Sherpani pass. It borders the Sagarmatha national park with the Gaurishankar national park. The pass can be crossed from either side starting from Lukla or Simigaon. Gaurishankar national park is dominated by the holy mountain Gaurishankar 7134m, its summit has been referenced for the official timezone of Nepal GMT +5:45 hours. The park is well known for the Tsho Rolpa lake at an altitude of 4580m, a glacial lake slowly eroding from the edges on the verge of explosion. The lifestyle of people in the Rolwaling valley hasn’t changed much over the decades. The region is inhabited mainly by the Sherpa communities. This trek requires 3 camping nights, the first night beside the Tsho Rolpa lake, the second night on the top of the Tsho Rolpa glacier, and the third night on the Tashi Lapcha pass. From the Tashi Lapcha pass, you may see people climbing the Pachermo peak 6187m. Rest of the days you will trek through the more touristic Sagarmatha national park through the village of Thame and Namche Bazaar concluding the trek in the Lukla airstrip. This trek can also be extended to the Gokyo lakes and the Everest base camp for an additional one week. Check out Rolwaling and Everest Basecamp Trek.
3. Everest Base Camp Trek - 5644m
A view from the Kalapatthar 5644m with Mount Everest 8849m in the Sagarmatha National Park, Nepal. Photography by Daniel Oberhaus, Flickr A most popular destination for any trekker, the Everest base camp trek gives you an elevation gain of 5644m at the Kalapatthar summit. You can do this trek without any need for camping in less than 2 weeks. Trekkers often choose to fly in from Lukla, though it can also be done by taking a jeep drive to Jubing village and trekking additional 4 days. Some of the beautiful mountains seen during the trek are Amadablam, Cho Oyu, Kangtega, Makalu, Tobuche, and Pumori. Mani walls, prayer flags, and yak herds are often encountered on the way. A must-do trek for any adventure seeker with excellent terrain and warm hospitality to rejuvenate your mind and body. There is also an internet facility in the Everest base camp so that you can share your epic moments right away with your loved ones. The tea houses and food are relatively standard to other trekking trails in Nepal. This trek can be combined to include breathtaking Gokyo lakes for additional 3 days.
4. Annapurna Circuit Trek - 5416m
Thorong Pass 5416m in the Annapurna conservation area. Photography by Andrew Smith, Flickr. Annapurna circuit trek gives you an elevation gain of 5416m at the Thorong pass. The trek can be done in just about a week. It is the most popular trek to do in Nepal with awe-inspiring views of the Annapurna range, Hiunchuli, Nilgiri, and Dhaulagiri. The Thorong pass connects Manang and Muktinath regions. The pass can be crossed from either side but starting from Manang is relatively easy and gives better acclimatization. Manang has the best monasteries in Nepal. Manangis are indigenous people of this region with rich trading history and living Tibetan culture. The region is also inhabited by Bhotia, Tibetans, and Gurung communities. The Thorong pass can be done throughout the year but doing it during the winter needs walking in the snow. Crossing the pass you will get to the Muktinath valley, where lies the famous Vishnu temple Muktinath at an elevation of 3800m. The temple has been an ultimate pilgrimage site both for Hindus and Buddhists for over 2000 years. Devotees bathe in 108 freezing water sprouts to purify from sin and attain spiritual liberation. The region represents a melting point of Hinduism and Buddhism. Annapurna circuit trek is best suited for excellent mountain views and high elevation gain in a shorter duration.
5. Dhaulagiri Circuit Trek - 5360m
Mount Dhaulagiri 8167m as seen from below the French pass 5360m is the 7th highest mountain in the world (Photo: Donald Macauley). From Kathmandu, we head northeast on the Friendship Highway which connects Kathmandu with Lhasa. A Lamosangu, we leave the Friendship Highway and take another way to Jiri. Earlier the motor able road used to be only up to Dolakha. But nowadays because of the Tamakoshi hydropower construction works, we can drive upto Shigati. From Shigati we trek to Suri Dobhan for our overnight stay.

Trek along the river, and then continue on the flat land. We cross several streams and jungles with varieties of orchid, rhododendron and other vegetation. Cross the suspension bridge to reach Jagat, a small town with people of different ethnicities.
Day 05: Trek Jagat to Simigaun (1,990m/6527 ft) :5 hrs
At first, we follow the normal flat path, then the trail ascends and descends through the jungle. The trail follows the river bank. As the valley narrows, we cross the suspension bridge over the river. A steep climb takes us to the Sherpa village of Simigaon, spread on the terrace of the mountainside. The village is mostly inhabited by Buddhists and there are also a few Hindus.
Day 06: Trek Simigaun to Kharka (2,900m/9512 ft):6 hrs.
We pass by a few more Sherpa settlements. On a clear morning the views of Gaurishankar above the Rolwaling Valley is fascinating. From the ridge top at Simigaun , we continue towards the Rolwaling Valley. The trail climbs a rocky, wooded ridge with beautiful pine forests. Descent again to the river of Rolwaling Khola.
Day 07: Trek Kharka to Beding (3,690m/12,103 ft):4 hrs
Our trail ascends uphill through different varieties of plants and Rhododendron trees. Continue along the left bank of the Rolwaling Khola. Continuing along the deep river valley, we arrive at a tributary river from Gaurishankar. Enjoy the unfolding views of the Gaurishankar. The trail rises further until we come across an easy and relatively flat terrain. Finally, we arrive at the Sherpa village of Beding located by the river.
Day 08: Trek Beding to Na (4,180m/13710 ft):5 hrs
An easy walk along the norther bank of the Rolwaling River begins our today’s trek. We pass across the summer village of Beding, several yaks grazing and people busy in their fields of buckwheat and barley. The crestline formed by the 6000ers such as Chekigo, Bamango, and Konyklemo rise on the immediate left of the village. We arrive at a monastery believed to be a meditative place of the Buddhist Guru Padma Sambhava. Walking along the valley floor, we finally reach the summer village of Na surrounded by potato fields.
Day 09: Trek Na to Tso Rolpa Lake (4,588m/15048 ft):7 hrs
At first trek through the leveled plane and gradually ascend to witness the Himalayan Lake filled with the chilling water of the glaciers. The views of Menlung and Tibetan Side Mountains add glory to the unfolding vista. We trek along the right bank of the river and then cross the river to climb up the rocky lateral moraine of the Glacier. We then walk to Tso Rolpa for the night.
Day 10: Tso Rolpa to Trakarding Glacier (4800m/15744 ft): 4 hrs
Early morning trek to head toward Trakarding glacier. Walk past the glaciers throughout the day and explore the beauty of the surrounding. The trail will still be ascending through some rock climbing and a gradual walk on the glacier moraine, occasionally passing rocks overhangs.
Day 11: Trek to Tashi Lapcha Base Camp (5,010m/16432 ft):5 hrs
The walk follows high slopes above the glacier to avoid the lower section, but further up we have to trek along the centre on the hard rocky glacier. Steady walk leads us to the lowest point of the icefall and then climbing to the easiest point to gain the Drolambau glacier. Here we will be surrounded by superb high mountain scenery. Continuing further downhill, we camp at Tashi Lapcha Pedi Camp at the foot of Tashi Lapcha, surrounded by absolutely grandiose mountains over 6000m with 360 degree panorama.
Day 12: Cross Tashi Lapcha Pass (5,755m/18876 ft):5 hrs
Continue trekking to Trashi Lapcha Pass (5755m). From the pass, the view of senior Khumbu peaks is magnificent. Some hundred meter downhill trek under overhanging rock, we camp at a superb location, with magnifiscent sunset views.
Day 13: Ascension Pachermo (6272 m/20572 ft) – Thengpo (4370 m)
We climb again to the neck of Trashi Lapcha and from there we start the ascent of Pachermo. The snow slopes lead us to the final ridge, sometimes requiring fixed ropes. From the Pachermo summit, enjoy the fantastic views of the Khumbu peaks including Everest, Makalu among others. Descend to Col then to Thengpo. The Pachermo ascent takes about 5 to 6 hrs and then another 3 to 4 hrs descends takes us to Thengpo.
Day 14: Reserve Day
There is no such guarantee that we can get quite a favorable weather especially on our planned day for the Parchemo summit, so this day is used as a contingency. If weather became exceptionally unfavorable we wisely have to postpone the program of summiting the peak.
Day 15: Trek to Thame (3,820m/12530 ft):5 hrs
Today you will be experiencing a bit easy walking, the walk from here will be enjoyable most of the way to Thame. A gradual descend brings us to Thame Village, the first hint of civilization since Beding. There is a very old and interesting Monastery at the upper end of the village. Now you have a glimpse of first really good views of the great peaks of the Khumbu including Mt Everest, Nuptse, Lhotse, Ama Dablam, Thamserku and Kusum Kangaru.
Day 16: Trek to Namche Bazaar (3,440m): 5 hrs
At Thame, the old trade route over the Nangpa-la into Tibet branches North, following the Bhote Koshi, which incidentally is the 2-3 river so named on this trek. The trail descends gently at first and then steeply to a bridge over the river Dudh Koshi at Phunki Tenga. Passing by several villages and numerous teashops, the trail ascends steeply to Sanasa where local Sherpa people sell the Tibetan goods. The way from Sanasa to Namche has small ups and downs with view of forests, scenery and mountains.
Day 17: Trek Namche to Lukla (2,840m)
The trail descends steeply downward so we need to walk slowly and under control as our shaky legs continuously battle the rocky terrain. After crossing the suspension bridges over the fast flowing Dudh Koshi and its tributaries the trail becomes more level and natural. Although we are travelling the same route down, we feel completely different views. We snap a mixture of open plains, rhododendron and pine forests, and in the distance snow covered peaks. We walk through the Sherpa villages’ noticing impressive faith in Buddhism and culture of prayer stones and prayers flag while we walk through the villages. On arrival in Lukla, we stretch those sore legs and recall the experiences of the last couple of weeks. We experience the culmination of a fantastic trek on a happy note with everyone back safe and sound with smile on their faces!
Day 18: Flight: Lukla – Kathmandu.
We fly back to Kathmandu after our long mountain journey. The early morning flight drops us at Kathmandu. You can rest and relax throughout the day in your hotel. If get interested to take some gifts home from Nepal for friends and relatives, visit to some nearby shops or venture out in Thamel for typical Nepalese goods which can be assisted by our guides or you can do it yourself too. If you want to explore any other areas of Kathmandu take the time to do that today! Remember, we will be hosting a fantastic celebration dinner together for successfully completing your adventure!
Day 19: Departure
We hope you enjoyed the tour with us, and are sure you’ll be back in your trip somewhere in the Himalaya again. Approximately 3 hours before your scheduled flight a representative from mountain sun valley treks will transfer you to the airport.
