Sagarmatha National Park: The No. 1 Best Destination for Trekking and Mountain Expeditions
Sagarmatha National Park is highly renowned for housing the world’s tallest mountain, Mount Everest (8,848.86 meters), and the popular trekking destination, Everest Base Camp. Sagarmatha National Park is a true ecological hotspot, with its diverse geography, native flora and fauna, breathtakingly lofty mountains, and vibrant Sherpa culture.
Background and History
The name of Sagarmatha is derived from two Nepali words: "Sagar,” meaning sky, and "Matha,” meaning forehead. So altogether, Sagarmatha means the forehead of the sky, and it is known as Chomolungma in Tibetian, which means "Goddess Mother of the Earth." Since the 1950s, tourism has taken the shape of mountaineering and trekking in the Everest Region, resulting in a positive change in the local economy as well as a change in the landscape, livelihood patterns, resource management, and infrastructure development. As a response to concerns about conservation, the Sagarmatha National Park was established on July 19, 1976 AD.
Following its establishment after three years, Sagarmatha National Park was also listed on UNESCO’s World Heritage Site List for its ecological diversity and unique culture. Furthermore, on January 1, 2002, a 275-square-kilometer buffer zone was declared, including the park's settlements. Then, on September 23, 2007, Gokyo and its surrounding lakes were recognized as Wetlands of International Importance under the Ramsar Convention.
Sagarmatha National Location, Map, and Getting There
Located in the north-eastern part of Nepal, the Sagarmatha National Park spans 1,148 square kilometers, encompassing the Himalayan ecological zone of the Khumbu Region. The protected area also adjoins the Makalu Barun National Park and Rolwaling Valley of the Gauri Sankar Conservation Area to the east and the Qomolangma Biosphere Reserve in the Tibetan Autonomous Region of China to the west.
The route to Sagarmatha National Park and also the popular trekking destinations such as the Everest Base Camp Trek, Gokyo Lakes Trek, and the Three High Pass Trek, as well as the Everest expeditions, and Kalapathar follow the same path. The distance of the SNP from Kathmandu is about 135 kilometers. So, you have the option of a flight to Lukla, which is either from Kathmandu or Manthali, Ramcehhap. The flight is about 25 minutes. Alternately, you can also catch a flight to Phaplu or Tumlingtar and trek the remaining distance, which is two days of walking. There is also the option of a direct helicopter ride to SNP.
The best route by road is to take a bus to Salleri, then, from there, another ride to Thamdada. From Thamdada, you will have to trek for another two days to reach the Sagarmatha National Park.
Flora and Fauna
The Sagarmatha National Park is one of the ecological hotspots in the Himalayan region of Nepal. The area inhabits rare and endangered species of both plants and animals, which has brought about the conservation efforts of this protected area. 69% of the total land in the protected area is barren above the altitude of 5000 meters, 28% is grazing land and the remaining 3% is covered with forests.
The park has six different types of vegetation. The lower subalpine zone is above 3,000 meters and has forests of blue pine (Pinus wallichiana), east Himalayan fir (Abies spectabilis), and drooping juniper (Juniperus recurva). The upper subalpine zone is above 3,600 meters and has a birch-rhododendron forest with Himalayan birch (Betula utilis), Rhododendron campanulatum, and R. campylocarpum. The lower alpine is above the timber line at 3,800–4,000 meters and has scrubs of Juniperus species Rhododendron anthopogon and R. lepidotum. The upper alpine zone is above 4,500 meters and has grassland and dwarf shrubs. The sub-nival zone is between 5,750 and 6,000 meters and has cushion plants.
The park also has a thriving faunal habitat with 152 high-altitude breeding species of birds, including blood pheasant (Ithaginis cruentus), robin accentor (Prunella rubeculoides), white-throated redstart (Phoenicurus schisticeps), grandala (Grandala coelicolor), and several rosefinches. There are also a total of 28 species of mammals, such as the northern plains grey langur (Semnopithecus entellus), jackal (Canis aureus), grey wolf (Canis lupus), Himalayan black bear (Ursus thibetanus) (VU), red panda (Ailurus fulgens) (VU), yellow-throated marten (Martes flavigula), Siberian weasel (Mustela sibirica), snow leopard (Panthera uncia) (EN), Himalayan musk deer (Moschus leucogaster) (EN), Himalayan tahr (Hemitragus jemlahicus) and Himalayan goral (Naemorhedus goral).
There is limited information regarding the documentation of reptiles and amphibian species. It is estimated that there are seven reptiles and six amphibians, while there have been records of 30 species of butterflies within the protected area, among them the orange and silver mountain hopper (Carterocephalus avanti), which is not recorded elsewhere in Nepal, and the rare red apollo (Parnassius epaphus).
Note: VU-Vulnerable, EN-Endangered
Mountains, Rivers, and Glaciers in the Sagarmatha National Park
The mountains of the Himalayas are considered to be geologically very young mountains, including the world’s highest Mt. Everest (8848.86 meters). Other notable peaks over 8000 meters include Cho Oyu (8,188 meters) and Lhotse (8,516 meters), along with 6000 and 7000-meter peaks such as Baruntse, Nuptse, Pumo Ri, Guachung Kang, Nangpai Gosum, Ama Dablam, Lobuche, Tabuche, Kang Tega, Thamserku, and many more.
The upper headwaters of the Bhote Kosi, Dudh Kosi, and Imja Khola rivers, which splinter beneath the Himalaya Mountains on the Tibetan border and converge close to Namche Bazar, the area's primary settlement, make up the core portion of the park. The rivers in Sagarmatha National Park are fed by glaciers at the top of each valley. Key glaciers include Imja, Nangpa, Ngozumpa, and Khumbu.
The 20-kilometer-long Ngozumpa Glacier is bordered by four Gokyo lakes. While all glaciers are retreating, Imja Dzo has expanded since the 1970s, now covering 1,200 hectares and 45 meters deep. Several new glacial lakes have also formed recently.
Communities and Culture of the Khumbu
The natives of the Khumbu region are the people of the Sherpa caste. The history of the Sherpas dates back to the late 1400s and early 1500s when the Samlo Gang in the eastern Tibetan territory was said to escape from military and political pressure. In the early 1530s, they migrated into Nepal over the Nangpa La Pass, splitting into two groups that settled in Khumbu and Solu, further south.
One of the biggest influences on the Sherpa communities has been the introduction of mountaineering in the 1950s, which revolutionized their economy. They are the followers of Tibetan Buddhism, which was founded by Guru Rinpoche. Monasteries like Tengboche and Pangboche and other smaller gompas are held in high regard, which is the prime location for their celebrations and ceremonies. The routes and trekking trails are often covered with inscriptions and flags of the Buddhist prayer Om mani padme hum, "praise to the jewel of the lotus flower."
Seasons, Weather, and Climate
The weather and temperature of SNP vary in accordance with the season and the diversity of the geographic location. Lower alpine regions such as Namche Bazaar are considerably humid with seasonal monsoons during summer, whereas the higher altitudes are very cold and dry, even dropping to a negative 25 degrees Celsius during the winter season. Autumn and spring have a more moderate temperature and a clear sky, which is the perfect time to visit SNP.
Even so, the average temperature in the Himalayas has increased by 1°C since the 1970s, nearly twice as quickly as the 0.6°C global warming that the Inter-Governmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) reported. This indicates that climate change is a serious problem. There have been visible impacts, such as the risk of the Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF), retreating glaciers, untimely snow and rainfall, and reduced snowlines.
Trails and Landmarks of the Sagarmatha National Park
The Sagarmatha National Park should be on your list to visit at least once in your lifetime. There are a variety of options you can choose from; from trekking to mountain expeditions to having a religious retreat, this protected area has got you covered. Peak Climbing in Nepal
In the lap of the mighty Himalayas, Nepal is a haven for adventure seekers and mountaineering enthusiasts alike. While the country is renowned for its towering peaks, such as Everest and Annapurna, it also offers a plethora of lesser-known summits that provide a thrilling challenge for those seeking to push their limits and test their mettle.
Peak climbing in Nepal is not just about conquering summits; it is a journey of self-discovery, resilience, and camaraderie. It is an opportunity to step outside one's comfort zone and embrace the raw beauty and untamed wilderness of the mountains.
One of the most popular destinations for peak climbing in Nepal is the Langtang region, home to a cluster of majestic peaks that rise like sentinels against the azure sky. Here, climbers can embark on expeditions to peaks such as Yala Peak and Naya Kanga, each offering its own set of challenges and rewards.
Another enticing destination for peak climbing adventures is the Rolwaling Valley, a remote and rugged region located east of the Everest region. Here, climbers can tackle peaks like Ramdung Go and Parchamo, navigating through glaciated terrain and steep ridges to reach their lofty summits.
In the far west of Nepal lies the stunningly beautiful Dhaulagiri region, home to some of the highest peaks in the world. Climbers flock to this area to take on the formidable challenges posed by peaks such as Dhampus Peak and Thapa Peak, which require technical skills and mountaineering expertise to conquer.
But perhaps the ultimate test of endurance and skill lies in the remote and enigmatic region of Mustang, where climbers can attempt to summit peaks like Tukuche Peak and Chulu West. Here, the landscape is stark and surreal, with towering rock formations and wind-swept valleys that seem to belong to another world.
Peak climbing in Nepal is not for the faint of heart, but for those who are willing to brave the elements and embrace the unknown, the rewards are beyond measure. From the exhilaration of reaching the summit to the breathtaking views that stretch out before you, every moment spent in the mountains is a testament to the indomitable human spirit and the power of nature to inspire and awe.
In conclusion, peak climbing in Nepal is a thrilling adventure that promises to challenge, inspire, and transform all who dare to undertake it. Whether you're a seasoned mountaineer or a novice climber, there is a peak in Nepal waiting to be conquered, a summit waiting to be reached, and an adventure waiting to be lived. So pack your bags, lace up your boots, and prepare to ascend to new heights in the land of the Himalayas.

Gokyo Renjo La Pass Trek is a popular and challenging trekking route in the Everest region of Nepal. It is an alternative route to the traditional Everest Base Camp Trek, which takes you through the stunning landscapes of the Gokyo Valley, crossing the high-altitude Renjo La Pass.
The trek starts with a scenic flight from Kathmandu to Lukla, and then the trail follows the Dudh Koshi River through lush forests and traditional Sherpa villages. You will pass by several monasteries, chortens, and mani walls adorned with Buddhist prayer flags along the way.
The highlight of the trek is the Gokyo Valley, which is home to the serene turquoise Gokyo Lakes, and the climb to Gokyo Ri (5,357m), which offers spectacular panoramic views of the surrounding Himalayan peaks, including Mount Everest, Cho Oyu, Lhotse, and Makalu.
After exploring the Gokyo Valley, the trek continues towards the Renjo La Pass (5,360m), which is a challenging and rewarding section of the trek. The pass offers breathtaking views of the Rolwaling Range and the Tibetan plateau.
The best time to do the Gokyo Renjo La Pass Trek is during the spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) seasons when the weather is clear and stable, and the views are spectacular. The trek takes around 15-18 days to complete, depending on your pace and itinerary.
It is important to note that this is a high-altitude trek that requires a good level of physical fitness and acclimatization. It is recommended to take enough time for acclimatization, stay hydrated, and follow the guidelines of your guide to ensure a safe and enjoyable trekking experience.

Top 10 treks to do in Nepal for the highest elevation gain
Nepal is a country in the Himalayas. Eight out of the ten highest mountains are located in Nepal. These highest mountains have evolved the most diverse ecosystem on the planet. To embrace this rich nature hundreds of thousands of trekkers come to Nepal every year. Over a hundred trekking trails lead to the base camps, glaciers, high passes, alpine meadows, lakes, and villages with ancient lifestyles and beliefs. If you are looking for treks to go to the highest elevation, here are 10 treks that will lead you above 5000m. - Makalu Sherpeni Col Trek - 6143m - Tashi Lapcha Pass Trek - 5810m - Everest Base Camp Trek - 5644m - Annapurna Circuit Trek - 5416m - Dhaulagiri Circuit Trek - 5360m - Upper Dolpo Trek - 5320m - Makalu Base Camp Trek - 5250m - Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek - 5143m - Langtang Ganjala Pass Trek - 5122m - Manaslu Circuit Trek - 5106m
1. Makalu Sherpeni Col Trek - 6143m
Mount Makalu 8436m, 5th tallest mountain in the world as seen from Sherpeni Col 6180m. Photograph by Mark Horrell, Flickr. Makalu Sherpeni Col trek or the Ice Col trek is the most difficult trek to do in Nepal that offers an elevation gain of 6143m in the Sherpani Col. The col separates the Makalu and Sagarmatha national parks. Week-long camping is required to cross the strenuous section between the Makalu base camp and the Chukkung village. It takes almost 3 weeks to complete this trek. The trek starts with a flight from Kathmandu to Tumlingtar airport in the Arun valley. Jeep drive to Num and the trail leads to the Makalu Barun national park and conservation area. The protected area got its name from the world’s fifth highest mount Makalu and Baruntse 7162m. You will trek through the villages inhabited by Rai and Limbu communities practicing Kiratism with their unique language, tradition, and costumes. After crossing mostly foggy and snowy Shipton La at an elevation of 4216m you will enter the exceptionally beautiful Barun valley. The trail follows along the Barun river through the alpine meadows to Makalu base camp. The trail heads further passing the Barun Pokhari at 5250m along the Barun glacier. You will pass the Sherpeni col just below the mount Baruntse and enter the hidden Hongku valley. From the valley, you will cross the Amphu Labtsa Pass at 5778m and get to the Chukkung village in the Everest region. From Chukkung you will trek back the popular Everest base camp route to Lukla for a flight back to Kathmandu.
2. Tashi Lapcha Pass Trek - 5810m
Trekkers climbing up towards the Tashi Lapcha pass from the Rolwaling side. Photography by Nabin Poudel. Tashi Lapcha Pass 5810m is the world’s second highest mountain pass after the Sherpani pass. It borders the Sagarmatha national park with the Gaurishankar national park. The pass can be crossed from either side starting from Lukla or Simigaon. Gaurishankar national park is dominated by the holy mountain Gaurishankar 7134m, its summit has been referenced for the official timezone of Nepal GMT +5:45 hours. The park is well known for the Tsho Rolpa lake at an altitude of 4580m, a glacial lake slowly eroding from the edges on the verge of explosion. The lifestyle of people in the Rolwaling valley hasn’t changed much over the decades. The region is inhabited mainly by the Sherpa communities. This trek requires 3 camping nights, the first night beside the Tsho Rolpa lake, the second night on the top of the Tsho Rolpa glacier, and the third night on the Tashi Lapcha pass. From the Tashi Lapcha pass, you may see people climbing the Pachermo peak 6187m. Rest of the days you will trek through the more touristic Sagarmatha national park through the village of Thame and Namche Bazaar concluding the trek in the Lukla airstrip. This trek can also be extended to the Gokyo lakes and the Everest base camp for an additional one week. Check out Rolwaling and Everest Basecamp Trek.
3. Everest Base Camp Trek - 5644m
A view from the Kalapatthar 5644m with Mount Everest 8849m in the Sagarmatha National Park, Nepal. Photography by Daniel Oberhaus, Flickr A most popular destination for any trekker, the Everest base camp trek gives you an elevation gain of 5644m at the Kalapatthar summit. You can do this trek without any need for camping in less than 2 weeks. Trekkers often choose to fly in from Lukla, though it can also be done by taking a jeep drive to Jubing village and trekking additional 4 days. Some of the beautiful mountains seen during the trek are Amadablam, Cho Oyu, Kangtega, Makalu, Tobuche, and Pumori. Mani walls, prayer flags, and yak herds are often encountered on the way. A must-do trek for any adventure seeker with excellent terrain and warm hospitality to rejuvenate your mind and body. There is also an internet facility in the Everest base camp so that you can share your epic moments right away with your loved ones. The tea houses and food are relatively standard to other trekking trails in Nepal. This trek can be combined to include breathtaking Gokyo lakes for additional 3 days.
4. Annapurna Circuit Trek - 5416m
Thorong Pass 5416m in the Annapurna conservation area. Photography by Andrew Smith, Flickr. Annapurna circuit trek gives you an elevation gain of 5416m at the Thorong pass. The trek can be done in just about a week. It is the most popular trek to do in Nepal with awe-inspiring views of the Annapurna range, Hiunchuli, Nilgiri, and Dhaulagiri. The Thorong pass connects Manang and Muktinath regions. The pass can be crossed from either side but starting from Manang is relatively easy and gives better acclimatization. Manang has the best monasteries in Nepal. Manangis are indigenous people of this region with rich trading history and living Tibetan culture. The region is also inhabited by Bhotia, Tibetans, and Gurung communities. The Thorong pass can be done throughout the year but doing it during the winter needs walking in the snow. Crossing the pass you will get to the Muktinath valley, where lies the famous Vishnu temple Muktinath at an elevation of 3800m. The temple has been an ultimate pilgrimage site both for Hindus and Buddhists for over 2000 years. Devotees bathe in 108 freezing water sprouts to purify from sin and attain spiritual liberation. The region represents a melting point of Hinduism and Buddhism. Annapurna circuit trek is best suited for excellent mountain views and high elevation gain in a shorter duration.
5. Dhaulagiri Circuit Trek - 5360m
Mount Dhaulagiri 8167m as seen from below the French pass 5360m is the 7th highest mountain in the world (Photo: Donald Macauley). The Dhaulagiri circuit trek is a two weeks long camping mode trek where you will get an elevation gain of 5360m at the French pass and at least camp for 10 days. The major attraction of this trek is Mount Dhaulagiri and the hidden valley in between the French pass and Dhampus pass 5258. Mount Dhaulagiri is the world’s seventh-highest mountain scaling 8167m above sea level. Dhaulagiri translates to dazzling white and beautiful in Sanskrit. The mountain form’s the deepest gorge in the world Kaligandaki gorge with mount Annapurna 8091m. The trek starts after driving from Kathmandu to the Shibang village in Myagdi. You will trek through the remote villages inhabited mostly by Gurung, Chettri, and Magar communities. The trail offers magnificent views of the mountains such as Gurja Himal 7193m, Dhaulagiri II 7751m, Tukuche 6920m, Nilgiri 7061m, Putha Hiunchuli 7246m, and the Annapurna range. The trek continues to the Italian base camp at 3660m through the dense oak, bamboo, and pine forest. Further trekking you will reach the Dhaulagiri base camp at 4748m. After acclimatizing at the base camp, you will cross the French pass, enter the hidden valley and cross the Dhampus pass finally descending through the alpine meadow to the Marpha village. You will see many apple orchards and wine distilleries in the village. From Marpha you will have an option to fly out or drive back to Kathmandu.
6. Upper Dolpo Trek - 5320m
Kangla Pass 5320 in Upper Dolpo. Photography by Bruno Rijsman Upper Dolpo trek is a 3-week-long wilderness camping trek inside the Shey Phoksundo national park. Only opened in 1989 for the trekkers, you will need at least 2 people to get the permit for doing this trek. For half of the duration, you will be trekking over 4000m and gain the highest elevation at the Kangla Pass 5320m. The park got its name from the turquoise blue Shey Phoksundo lake surrounded by forests, rocky crags, and snow-capped peaks. Also, an 11th-century Shey Gompa is another attraction of the trek. Shey means crystal in the Tibetan language, the whole region is under the influence of Bonpo and Buddhist religion with several ancient monasteries in Dho-Tarap, Namgung, and Saldang villages. The Dho-Tarap village is the highest human settlement in Nepal at an elevation of 4080m. Upper Dolpo is the most remote and less visited tourist destination in the Himalayas. The trek starts by taking a flight from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj and another flight to Juphal airport. From Juphal it is 4 days trek to the Shey Phoksundo lake and it takes another 3 days to reach the Shey Gompa and Crystal mountain crossing the Kangla Pass. The trail continues further through high-altitude Yak pastures, several villages, and monasteries and finally concludes in the Juphal airport circling the Shey Phoksundo national park.
7. Makalu Base Camp Trek - 5250m
Mount Makalu 8463m as seen from its base camp is the 5th highest mountain in the world. Photography by Mark Horrell, Flickr. Makalu base camp trek gets you to the highest elevation of 5250 at the Barun Pokhari. This trek can be done in two weeks by staying in the tea houses. The park's major attraction is the 46Km long Barun valley. Buddhist books consider this valley as one of the seven Shangrilla where life will be safe even in the case of global catastrophe and is filled with mystical powers. The trek starts by taking a flight from Kathmandu to Tumlingtar airport following the jeep drive to Num village. From there you will cross the Arun river and ascend through the farm fields and settlements of the Rai and Limbu communities. The last village on this trek is Tashi Gaon. Trekking further up the village you will cross the Shipton la and get down to the Barun valley. The valley is rich with orchids, high waterfalls, alpine meadows, and the most pristine forest on earth.
