Lore Dumping About D&D Characters, Part 1

I may not be able to play all of these characters anymore, but that doesn’t mean I can’t yap about them and show them off like special little figurines!

Taura Elistacia - Half-Elf Battle Smith Artificer (Status: Retired)

Since I lost the friends I played the campaign that Taura was in with, which was set in Wildemount, I can’t play her anymore, but she is by far my favorite of my D&D characters to date.

“Hailing from the industrial town of Hupperdook in the Dwendalian Empire, Taura was the daughter of a renowned human inventor and an elven woman. Her mother left shortly after she was born, something she never got over, leaving her to be raised by her father until she was ten, when he was murdered in front of her. After that, she was forced to live a life on the streets, struggling to survive as, all the while, she taught herself in the ways of inventing and engineering, using both her father's teachings and what she learned on her own, from watching others and figuring things out herself. Eventually, using her newfound skills, she managed to get herself out of the streets, and, alongside her robot companion, Tink, finds herself ready to explore just what's out there waiting for her.”

Fun Facts: Her prized weapon is a rifle called “The Matron’s Whisper”, imbued with the power of the Raven Queen, and whenever she gets a critical hit, she turns invisible; she is a Percy De Rolo fangirl; despite having a 9 in charisma, she had the most romantic success of anyone in the party; she cried her way out of jail; she had a prosthetic hand (she accidentally blew her hand off while testing out one of her guns); she wears a gold necklace with a red jewel in the center given to her by her father and rarely ever takes it off

Styrmiria - Tiefling Path of the Storm Herald Barbarian/Storm Sorcerer (Status: Retired)

Another character I can no longer play without the friend group, Styrmiria was part of a homebrew campaign, and I love her very much. She is the reason Barbarian is now one of my favorite classes to play.

“Styrmiria was born into Clan Siris during one of the largest Maelstrom expansions in a century, thereby gaining the power of the storm due to the circumstances of her birth. She spent much of her youth training and honing her talents, eventually becoming a good enough warrior to be allowed to join the Unifier's Honor Guard as a representative of her clan. However, after one particular mission, in which she was charged with accompanying the Unifier into the Maelstrom to get to a diplomatic meeting in Marielen, she was exiled from her clan due to having contact with the Maelstrom, a choice she willing made knowing the consequences. Unable to return home, she instead made her way to Vandrin's Folley, where she met Cade Underbrough, a halfling scholar, and began a relationship with him. During her time in Vandrin's Folley, Styrmiria has begun having ominous dreams of the Maelstrom dying and releasing its energy somewhere, ending with visions of the storm clouds gathering over mountains in the north and the howling of wolves...”

Fun Facts: She fought and killed a giant boar single-handedly and then sent the head to her boyfriend; her great-ax is called Scourge and it prevents anyone it hits from healing; she was the mother-figure of the party; she has the ability to charm people because on her homebrew Tiefling sub-race

Laressa Laenys - Tiefling Circle of Land (Desert) Druid (Status: Active)

Laressa is part of a homebrew campaign with entirely different people than the others, so she is still one that I play! She is very iconic and very traumatized and I love her.

“Laressa was born to a half-elf father and human mother, Andol and Lerile Laenys in a small town located at the base of a mountain called Alryne. She was one of two children, the other being her younger half-elf sister, Londrai.

Although she was loved and accepted by her family, others didn’t share their sentiment, and she was often the subject of ridicule and resentment.

Despite her parents’ attempts to shield her from it, Laressa was well-aware of what was going on, and as a child, it made her very upset. Oftentimes, she would get into fights with other children who made fun of or insulted her for being a Tiefling, which only got her into more trouble and made things worse.

However, when she was around 12 years old, in one particular fight with a boy named Raylen Slatebane, she accidentally burned him with an unintentional use of Hellish Rebuke, severely damaging his face. The townspeople were furious with her and demanded that she be punished. Her parents managed to prevent her from receiving any serious repercussions, but Laressa never forgave herself, and neither did the townspeople.

She closed herself off, spending more and more time away from the town, in the woods beyond it. She had always had an affinity for nature, with a special connection to it that no one could quite explain. Her father believed it came from his mother, a once-famous elven druid named Zylphine Laenys, while her mother thought it was a blessing from the gods.

Regardless of where her abilities came from, Laressa had them, and she decided to focus on learning how to control them so that she would not hurt anyone else and use them for good.

For a while, she was making good progress, until an incident, when she was 16 years old that ended up in the destruction of several buildings in the town and several injured people when she unintentionally caused an earthquake in response to being harassed by a group of teenagers, including Raylen. One of the teens, Raylen’s girlfriend Zelile, ended up being killed in the earthquake, and after that, Laressa knew that she couldn’t stay anymore, as the townspeople who had so despised her would never forgive her.

So she ran away, without even getting a chance to say goodbye to her family. She does not know if they are still there or what has happened to them since she left.

After wandering for several months, crossing over the mountains, she ended up in a vast desert, where she became lost and almost died, before being saved by a caravan of earth genasi druids, who took her in and trained her in their ways. She became close with a woman named Torra, who became her mentor and maternal figure and taught her many of the druidic arts that she currently uses. She also formed a close relationship with another girl around her age named Fiara. They quickly became friends once Laressa joined the caravan, and their close friendship eventually became something more.

Laressa stayed with the earth genasi, traveling the desert and learning their ways, until she was 23 years old. It was then that the caravan was attacked by a female ancient blue dragon, Kariyth, whose hoard was located within a desert mountain the caravan was passing by. Most of the caravan was killed, and Laressa was forced to flee with Fiara when Torra sacrificed herself for them to escape.

They made it to an oasis city, Drona, run by an eccentric elven warlord called Hernelis Danorron, who found use for their druidic abilities and allowed them to stay if they swore themselves into his service, which they agreed to, ready to do whatever it took to survive.

However, a few months after arriving in the city, it was attacked by another desert warlord, and although Drona was able to defend against him with the help of Laressa and Fiara, in all the chaos of the fighting, Fiara was mortally wounded. Laressa held her as she died. And for the first time in a long time, she lost control.

After that, Laressa swore to take revenge on all those who had taken the people she loved from her, the warlord and Kariyth alike, and to protect those who cannot protect themselves, so that no one had to experience the pain and loss she had, to go through the life she had.

But for now, she wanders, offering her services to those who need it, biding her time until she can get her justice and leave the world better than when she came into it.”

Fun Facts: She has a crush on someone in the party; she barely hits anything ever lol; she prefers to wild shape when she fights (I just usually forget to do that); she has a pan flute that lets her summon an army of rats (no I am not making that up)

Lelouch and Suzaku's childhood traumas explained through the enneagram

I love finding parallels in the works I'm reading or watching and I love even more when they're intelligently done and confront them. Code Geass is an excellent work that uses narrative duality. Lelouch and Suzaku are the most obvious parallel because I think it's the only one that the series deliberately teaches you because they try to build a compelling rivalry that wins hearts, despite the fact that in CG they abound more and are just as interesting (you are more otakus than me, therefore, they know that the topic of rivalry is very common in the anime industry, especially if the work is aimed at a male audience). You must understand that Suzaku and Lelouch are each other's reverse mirror. So much so that I think it gives rise to analyze the development of the relationship of both because the paths of both are intertwined and affect the narrative arc of the other. But unlike Shirley's, Rolo's, and C.C.'s story arcs, which are totally dependent on Lelouch, Suzaku's story arc stands on its own (Lelouch plays a key role in his evolution, but it's not everything). In that sense, it's more like the Kallen and Nina story arcs (this is something I respect and like about Kallen and Suzaku as main characters).

Today I want to focus only on the childhood of Lelouch and Suzaku, where it all began, taking advantage of the fact that in my previous post I talked about the enneagram.

Although Lelouch and Suzaku are mirror inverses of each other, there are scenarios in their lives that are similar and their responses have been more or less similar. One of them is the trauma that forged their character. To begin with, Lelouch and Suzaku are the sons of two very powerful men (Genbu isn’t the Emperor of a world superpower, but he is the Minister of Japan; he is someone important, he isn’t the man who sells fruits in your neighborhood) who, in turn time, they are horrible parents. Without intending to sound like a psychologist (because I'm not), for boys, the relationship with their fathers is important since they are the model of the man they want to be in their lives (a model that they can reject, accept or idealize). In the case of Lelouch and Suzaku it's cutely obvious: they reject him (and the devilishly ironic thing is that the more they try to get away from them, the closer they get; in Lelouch it's more obvious xD).

On the one hand, we have Suzaku. A 1w2 enneatype (even when I find traits of a 1w9 enneatype, I lean towards the option of Suzaku being a 1w2 since he also goes about correcting the people around him, even if he is a self-preservation subtype and, by extension, is so preoccupied with fixing himself. I don't rule out that he's looking at his Faith cognitive function because Suzaku is an ISFJ, but I think, in that case, his Faith would boost his wing 2 even more than wing 9... Anyway, we won't let's divert). 

Regardless if his wing is 9 or 2, his enneatype is 1 and the emotional wound of the Ones is that they see themselves as imperfect beings. They have a great feeling of inadequacy because in their childhood they were not given the message that they were good (or it was a message that was lost) and surely it was because their parents demanded a lot of them. I entered the field of speculation assuming that Genbu was a strict father given his role as Minister of Japan (at least, he is in my headcannon and in my fanfic). Hence, Suzaku insists on correcting the error that "perverted" him and strives like a beast to improve himself (and his environment) with his ethical values, always trying to be morally blameless and consistent with his ideals to justify himself. himself and avoid being judged by others (in R2 episode 17, Suzaku angrily yells at Lelouch that the Geass order he gave him broke his convictions; for Ones, who are hyper-moralistic and want to be examples of virtue , this is a curse).

Without a doubt, Suzaku lost sight of that message that he was good when he killed his father. Suzaku sees himself as a bad person. A monster. That is the reason why Euphemia asks him not to hate himself. It's pretty fucked up because since the Ones can't live up to his unrealistic standards and neither can the others, they finds it hard for them to forgive; so if Suzaku doesn't forgive himself for killing his father, don't expect him to forgive Lelouch for killing the girl he loved.

I feel like little Suzaku got a tremendous disappointment from his father. I think that children tend to idealize their parents (with time and maturity, this idealization weakens and when they are adults they have a more realistic or demonic image of their parents, it all depends). Not only Suzaku realized that he was imperfect (and bad), but also his father. Imagine the feelings that little Suzaku must have experienced when he saw his father persist in forging ahead with the war against an empire that Japan had no chance of winning, because their pride was more important than the lives of the citizens who he had pledged to serve. 

From here, Suzaku unconsciously psyched himself up: "My father was bad and imperfect; but I won't be, I will be different, I will defend the people I serve, the methods I use do not transcend my purpose, much less my principles, I will try to be good". Consequently, we have a Suzaku who lives to reach an unattainable ideal in order to correct what is wrong with himself and Britannia and he will never achieve it because mistakes are unforgivable, in his opinion (the good thing is that the Zero Requiem brought peace to his tormented conscience, not just to the world).

It is not true that Suzaku went completely unpunished. He gave himself a punishment: he forever refused forgiveness. He chose to live a life of suffering. 

By the way, don't think that all Ones are as obsessed with his mistakes as Suzaku. He is an insane One. This is because he, in his crazy head, believes that he can regain lost goodness or achieve perfection at the expense of his own life (that's something we saw for example in Natalie Portman's character in Black Swan: Nina, a self-preserving One pretty insane).

On the other hand, we have Lelouch. I will tell you what the Eights' wound is because if you read my other post, you should know: vulnerability. This is because when they were children they weren’t protected by their parents, so a conflict deprived them of their sweet innocence. By now you should know what I mean. At the beginning of R1 episode seven we are given a flashback to Lelouch's last conversation with his father. A little Lelouch complains to his father why he didn’t protect his mother who was murdered and, although he doesn’t express it, this claim extends to his sister, who was left paralyzed and blind, and himself. His claim verbalizes his trauma: "why didn't you protect my mother? [Why didn't you protect my sister? Why didn't you protect me?] Weren't you supposed to be the most powerful man in the world?" (of course, I’m paraphrasing and what is in brackets is what he does not say, but feels). Here you can see the childish disappointment of his father figure: his father isn’t an all-powerful, omnipotent, omnipresent man who is the image Holy Britannia projects of his Emperor. What does Charles do? Well, if little Lulu and his sister had a minimal amount of protection from his father, now they will have nothing since he will exile them to Japan (he has left them totally helpless).

Both Charles and Genbu justify themselves, hiding behind the image they must give. But with Charles, the childish disappointment is double because, in addition, he excuses himself in the ideology of Britannia: he abandons Nunnally because he is weak and the individuals who are fit to survive must do it on his behalf, thus demonstrating their strength. I don’t want to mess with Social Darwinism because it isn’t my intention to go off on a tangent, but these words are very important because they will shape his personality. From then on, he will assume vulnerability as something bad. I don't know what little Lelouch's position was regarding the ideology of the Holy Empire of Britannia. I’m going to assume that he accepted them by natural disposition (like, for example, us with gender roles that until we properly document ourselves do not begin to question them). This sinister, in particular this discussion, made Lelouch rethink the ideology of his homeland and reject it. To finish off poor Lelouch, Charles yells at him that Lelouch is nothing without him (well, he's dead without him because he gave him everything he is; I don't know what seems stronger to you).

And what does Enneatype 8 have to do with it? ALL! As a result of this wound (which has not healed in the case of average and insane Eights), Eights learn to fend for themselves and be self-sufficient because they assimilate that the strong survive and develop a protective instinct towards others. weak and their relatives. It goes without saying that Lelouch was psyched that he was going to prove his father wrong: "My father is not powerful and he believes that I am incapable of surviving without him; he does not define me; I will prove to him that I am alive without him; I will become strong ; I will be independent; my sister will not miss my father because she will have me; I will protect her; I will not fail her like my father did". It doesn't matter if it is Lelouch, he was a child and a child isn’t called the atrocities that Charles said to him, look at him in the photo, isn't he cute? That reminds me that type 8 is called the Challenger, what does Lelouch do when his father boasts? He challenges him yelling that he doesn't want to be his heir xD).

Lelouch never shows vulnerability because he subconsciously believes that it is to be weak and he needs to be strong and to do so, he must keep himself under control. Even when he feels vulnerable, he tries to suppress it. But being a sexual subtype, emotions get the better of him more times than he'd like to admit, and they often come out in a negative way. Lelouch has terrible emotion management and zero emotional intelligence (it's not for nothing that he confused romantic love with filial love in that phone conversation with Shirley or he's not sure what to say to her when she asks him if he loved that girl he was talking; Eights have a hard time giving and receiving love because they only understand that people are either for them or against them). He has a hard time recognizing the emotions and feelings of others and himself because it is his Achilles heel.

Also for this reason Lelouch is wary of people and prefers to keep them at a distance since he interprets them as signs of vulnerability (essentially I mean the Black Knights, but even the people who managed to gain Lelouch's trust struggled to earn it).

By the way, I heard somewhere that each country has an ideal citizen model that corresponds to an enneatype (for example, the United States is enneatype 3, long live the American dream!). In the case of Britannia, I dare to say that it is the unhealthy enneatype 8. Starting from that idea, we would see that the ideology and values ​​of Britannia contributed to the formation of Lelouch's personality (does the same happen with Suzaku? I only know that the Japanese have a strong sense of community rooted, not like Westerners that we are more individualistic, and they repress inappropriate behaviors. Suzaku is a person who acts for the common good and is interested in the community, so...).

Still, it's amazing that Lelouch turned out an 8 average. He has things to work on himself. But he could have been worse.

I left you with these traumatized little ones and their horrible parents who, because of them, didn’t have a healthy growth. Thanks for screwing everything up, Genbu and Charles. I think most of you will think that Charles is worse than Genbu. Honestly, I think they're both just as terrible.

Little Suzaku needed someone to hold him and explain that it's okay to make mistakes because he's part of growing and learning. "You're not perfect, but it doesn't mean you're not good."

Little Lelouch, for his part, needed someone to hug him and tell him that being vulnerable is not weak and that he can trust others without feeling the fear of being betrayed.

Hugs for mini Lelouch and mini Suzaku. They need our love. Stop hating them. They already hate themselves enough. Don't make it worse.

Hydrogen Shot - Probably functionally a flamethrower, if it shoots a stream of H2 out of a firearm, which would presumably ignite the gas. (If he can shoot it without igniting the gas, I don't think it would otherwise harm a person unless it flooded the area around them enough to asphyxiate, but Percy could find some interesting applications for it as a non-weapon.)

Long Duration Storage Shot - Puts target into stasis in some kind of containment (like a pokeball or something)

Carbon Negative Shot - Removes all carbon from target, so if you shoot, e.g., an organic lifeform, it disintegrates into a collection of its remaining constituent elements and a lump of coal goes shooting out the other side.

Enhanced Geothermal Shot - Lava. Definitely lava.

Floating Offshore Wind Shot - This is a weird one. I suppose a gun that blows your target out to sea has it's applications, but what happens if you're significantly inland?

*It's a set of clean energy research programs called "Energy Earthshots," which IMO already strains the terminology of a "moon shot" to its breaking point, but once they started listing the six ones announced so far, the comparison to Percy's Ice Shot and Fire Shot was all I could think of.

My favourite albums of 2022

After two years of Covid, the year 2022 was finally the year when one felt like things got back to normal, at least felt that way when it comes to my cultural life (definitely not normal when some old dickhead starts f* war). To be precise why it felt normal is the fact that comparing to two previous years I managed to see 37 concerts (if I counted correctly my photos on insta) + 2 festivals + managed to get to normal cinema as well (not that I missed that one much with home cinema at home :P). There are definitely some highlights from it as well, from cinema its most notably one of the greatest movie of last years - The Worst Person in the World (J. Trier at his ultimate best), from concerts there are The Armed (the f* best active live band), but there were more like Porridge Radio (who managed to release two masterpieces during covid years), reunited Maybeshewill or Sigur Ros from post rock, Mitski, Birds in Row, my youth nostalgic concerts with Artic Monkeys & Bright Eyes, seeing Nothing live in club and festival, finally seeing Beck, and post-punk highlights from Soft Kill & Fontaines D.C. 

But this piece was supposed to be about my most favorite albums which were released in last 12 months, right? So there is the list:

Mitski - Laurel Hell > I wouldn't mind Mitski taking as many breaks from music industry as she wants, because if after every break she comes with such album as this one, the world for all loners would be brighter place. I could listed to Love me more on repeat for hours!

Porridge Radio - Waterslide, Diving Board, Ladder to the Sky > While Mitski sings “love me more”, Porridge radio are shouting “I don't wanna be loved” in The Birthday Party song, but kind of feels the same. These are the songs that manage to take you back to your teenage years and expressing the same what you felt then and what you feel now when the moment just take overwhelms you. Porridge radio released their debut in spring of 2020 when all the lockdowns started, might be the occasions that I happen to be at those time that it speaks directly to me, or just we have this great band and we can expect much more.

The Beths - Expert in Dying Fields > This indie band is from New Zealand, that all explains probably why on my list right? Kiwi accent is enough :) but even of those who haven't got this thing for Kiwi bands, after bit weaker second album (it happens if your debut rocks), The Beths are back at their best, definitely one of the best indie pop groups you can catch seeing live.

Birds in Row - Gris Klein > Not sure if more adorable are albums of this French trio or their live shows. The more I am listening to their 2022 piece the more hooked I am getting, the same happen to me with their previous one and I believe the same will happen again. 

Rolo Tomassi - Where Myth Becomes Memory > Yes I admit, I cant be objective, I was loving this new album before I heard it, because I was so excited that new album means new live shows and well there are not many things with which you can be 100% sure it will be great, and I know that in February 2023 it will be just fucking great.

Fontaines D.C. - Skinty Fia > You wouldn't find better representative of post punk these days than these Irish guys, another great album, great show, if you haven't listen to them yet this is a must.

Black Country, New Road - Ants From Up Here > This is another band who released magnificent albums fusing all genres that I love during covid. Some may say its bit weaker that first one, but still works. Big shame that the whole line up who stood behind these albums is no longer available to see.

I’ve seen a few posts around the net lately about method acting, and they reminded me of this part from Gather Your Drama and I thought I should share it. It’s a really interesting (and funny) conversation about it by a group of actors with fairly varied backgrounds in the industry.

Honestly, I’d recommend watching the full show to anyone who has an interest in acting. It’s insightful, enthralling, and hilarious (also some mild nightmare fuel at the end, thanks Alex). It’s on Geek & Sundry’s twitch under Gather Your Party. Does require subbing to G&S to watch, but I’d say it’s worth it (and check out some of the other episodes, the two Gather Your Goth ones are my other favourites).

What is a RoRo ship used for?

RoRo ships are designed to carry cars, agricultural tractors, mining and road machinery, trucks, semi-trailer trucks and trailers, buses, industrial vehicles, lorries… Unlike LO-LO (lift-on/lit-off) vessels that use cranes to load/unload the cargo, these kinds of ships have a built-in ramp that allows the equipment to roll on and off the vessel: 

on their own wheels for self-propelled machines  

on handling equipment equipped with wheels for the machines that are not self-propelled. Hence they remain on this equipment throughout the sea voyage. 

The ramp can normally be found on the bow side (front) or the backside (stern) of the ship, and sometimes on the sides or even on land. Thanks to this system, the loading and unloading of the wheeled cargo are much easier and safer with these ramps than if they were done with a crane.  

RoRo ships can have up to 13 decks. Most of them have a capacity of 4,000 to 5,000 CEU (car equivalent unit). However some can hold up to 8,000 vehicles. Once a vehicle is on board, it drives on covered internal liftable ramps that connect the decks to reach the location it has been assigned to, just like in a car park. Its location depends on its length, height and weight. Then it is secured with lashings.

What are the types of RoRo vessels?

Whereas ferries, cruise ferries and barges can be used to move vehicles across rivers and other short distances through the sea, the term “RoRo” is commonly used to call large deep-sea vessels used to ship vehicles. The biggest ones are able to withstand up to 10 tons of pressure per square meter, which makes them perfect for heavy cargo shipping. Apart from vehicles, they can carry high-and-heavy cargo, break bulk, special products and the heavy-duty transport of steel and paper. 

Depending on the nature of the cargo carried, different kinds of RoRo vessels are used: 

Pure Car Carriers (PCC) and Pure car/truck carrier (PCTC) are dedicated respectively to cars and trucks as well as car transportation. They have a box-like framework and multiple decks and some of them are larger in order to perfectly suit to bigger vehicles.

A GNR, no dia 3 de junho, deteve um homem com 47 anos, por furto em estabelecimento industrial e recuperou material furtado, no concelho de Vila do Conde.

No âmbito de uma ação de fiscalização rodoviária, no concelho de Vila do Conde, um condutor ao aperceber-se da presença dos militares da Guarda, efetuou uma manobra suspeita, tendo sido intercetado momentos depois. Durante a ação policial foi realizada uma busca ao veículo onde foi possível verificar que no seu interior se encontravam 14 vigas em alumínio e um rolo de cabos de telecomunicações que haviam sido furtadas do interior de uma serralharia. No seguimento da ação, o material recuperado, avaliado em cerca de mil euros, foi apreendido.

O detido foi constituído arguido e os factos foram comunicados ao Tribunal Judicial de Vila do Conde.
