monza is for believers // nyck de vries
Tumblr media
summary: nyck gets his f1 debut, and y/n is there to watch his dreams come true. after the race is over, he makes a decision that will alter the course of their friendship forever.
pairing: nyck de vries x female reader (friends to lovers!)
warnings: monza 2022 ( don’t worry the curse will get him next year !! ) and indications of sex. mentions of health issues & chronic illness (iron deficiency anemia)and brief mention of pregnancy (like it’s barely there)
authors note: if I was latifi and just got my ass handed to me by the other nyck, I’d quit then and there 😭. i still dont believe that this man doesnt have a seat for next year.
saturday - qualifying
“nyck, this is incredible, honestly. you really didn’t have to do this.”
y/n y/l/n was pure awe as she stepped out of the mercedes, looking around at the italian track. this was monza, the temple of speed.
obviously it wasn’t her first time at a track. she’s been to zaandvort before, in the grandstands. but she’d never watched from the pit lane before, much less the mercedes amg hospitality suite.
“of course i did! your mom called and told me you needed a break.” nyck laughed, throwing an arm around y/n’s shoulders
she rolled her eyes. “you’re insufferable today, de vries.”
they’d known each other for over ten years. once up a time, y/n had wanted to give karting a shot, fascinated by all things fast and car related. of course, a few seasons later she was frustrated and ready to throw in the towel. she had only ever won one race, and lacked the self confidence to keep going.
but her coach adored her and wanted to keep her around, so he started training her in different aspects of the team: managment, stewarding, mechanics. anything that he could think of to keep y/n somehow connected to the sport.
and now she worked in the manufacturing department for porsche: engineering and repairs and anything else mechanically inclined that people were needed for.
“god, I missed the racetrack. like, marrakech and new york were incredible, but there was no roar of engines, no smell of gasoline.”
nyck chuckled as he swiped his pass at the paddock entry gates. “the burning rubber is still there.”
“still not real racing. not the way that we were taught.”
“shut up. I’m not the one that quit.”
“you weren’t a backmarker.”
“my mom thought you were really good.”
y/n rolled her eyes, pulling her sunglasses over her eyes as nyck stopped for autographs and photos. “she’s your mother, she had to support us both.”
“she loves you.”
“and don’t I know it.”
they walked together through the mercedes hospitality suite, getting hot drinks before settling in at a seat near the window. the sun was streaming through the windows, reflecting off the softness of nycks skin, the familiar pang in her stomach that reminded her they couldn’t be anything more than friends.
it was the lifestyle he lead, a relationship would never work for him: the long nights, weekends away, camera always trained on him wherever he went.
and as much as it hurt, she needed to accept that she and nyck could never be more than what they were. more than friends.
“nyck!” a thick voice shouted out from across the suite as toto wolff came striding across the small cafe area
“hey, toto.” nyck flushed, waving at the team principal. “this is y/n, I don’t know if susies told you about her? she and I used to go karting together years and years ago.”
y/n went pink, slapping at nycks arm. “I went the technical route. I help build engines for porsche in amsterdam.”
toto laughed. “so you’re the smart one in the relationship than?”
they both flushed pink, nyck and y/n talking over each other to try and refute the team principals assumption.
“we’re just friends. nycks invited my family to a few e-prix but it’s not like I go everywhere with him.”
“hey, nyck, I know that you were with aston yesterday and hoped you’d be able to watch from mercedes this weekend, but alexander albon is is the hospital, he has appendicitis.”
nycks jaw fell wide open. y/n reached across the table to put a hand on his arm, her magenta nail polish contrasting his tan skin. “nyck, go. I’ll meet you in the garage after I call your parents and make sure they’re watching.”
nyck nodded, grabbing his jacket and taking off across the hospitality suite while y/n grabbed for her phone, searching for mrs. de vries’ number. she got up from the wooden chair, grabbed her backpack and moved to follow nyck before toto stopped her.
“susie told me about your crush on him. neither of you are getting any younger. tell him before it’s too late.”
———————
“for optimized performance, you need to send him out on the mid compound tyre, it will last longer so you have a better chance to get quicker laps, since you’ll be able to stay out for more. based on weather patterns, we should als be starting with them tomorrow when the race begins-“
“you realize we have proper engineers for this, right miss y/l/n?” jost capito asked gently, passing y/n a pair of headphones.
y/n rolled her eyes, taking the soundproof headphones and slipping them around her neck. “just trying to be helpful. that’s my childhood best friend you’re sending out there.”
“she builds engines for a living, jost.” nyck pointed out as he got suited up in his williams fireproofs. “she also did like, four seasons of karting as a driver before our coach started training her in he behind the scenes. maybe she’s worth listening to.”
nyck never understood why someone as smart as y/n still hung around him all the time. sure, he was talented and famous, but nowhere near as brilliant as she was. she could have gone places, but instead she worked on the assembly line at porsche.
but y/n was always smiling, because it was something she was good at, something she enjoyed. she was happy slaving away and working to build something with her hands rather than sitting behind a desk looking pretty.
she wouldn’t have survived a day in the office: the hem of her white embroidered camisole tied so far up on her chest that one could see the royal blue lace on her bralette, the piercings crawling up her ear, her curly hair pinned up in a messy bun and the skin-tight jeans that made her ass look so good that it gave the dutch boy a hard on if he stared at her for longer than a minute.
and that damn tattoo. the three small dragons that trailed from the top of her jeans and up the side of her stomach, the small glittery stomach piercing in the middle.
basically the opposite of what an f1 wag was supposed to look like.
nyck wasn’t sure when he had started falling in love. and it hurt to know that he could never hold her like he wanted to, kiss her like he wanted to, make love to her like she deserved.
he wanted to blame it on his job, but the fact of the matter was that he was a coward scared to face his feelings for the one woman who had been by his side throughout everything.
“hey, nyck?”
the cold metal of the rings that she wore was pressed against his skin, making him suck in a breath.
“be careful out there, okay? I know you’ll play it safe, you always do, but come back to me in one piece, okay?”
nyck nodded, clutching her hands in his. “I promise.”
“pinky promise?”
y/n smiled, extending her pinky finger. “promise.”
every nerve in her body was on edge as she watched him walk towards that car, slowly backing away from the garage so that the drivers could get ready for fp3.
“you’re not exactly convincing me that you’re just childhood best friends.”
nicholas latifis voice made the reserve drive jump as he was trying to pull his balaclava over his head.
“what’s it to you?” nyck said coldly, staring at the canadian.
nicholas shrugged. “I just see two people who are madly in love with each other and too afraid to admit it.
sunday - race day
ah, race day. y/n loved everything about it.
it was cold in monza as she walked with nyck to the williams hospitality suite, clouds hanging low in the air.
“you need med-“
the driver laughed, finishing the sentence for her. “medium compound tyres, I know. and god knows jost does too, you’ve ingrained it in his mind after yesterday.”
because of the cold, the top that she wore was more conservative today, only one of the three dragons on her stomach visible. but this tank top showed off more of her cleavage, and it was all nyck could do not to stare in wonder at y/n’s double-d’s, a little bit of dark brown lace visible from the bra.
the previous night hadn’t been the first night that nyck had to touch himself in the shower to get her off his mind and it probably wouldn’t be the last. he loved everything about her so much that it hurt.
“hey, you’re going to do great out there, nyck.” y/n said softly, placing a hand on his shoulder. nyck reached up to place one of his hands on her arm, wishing that she wasn’t wearing her plaid flannel, that way he could find comfort in her soft skin. “you’re starting p8, you can do this, that’s a good place to be.”
“y/n, I’ll be okay, just a little nervous.”
he could tell that she didn’t believe him.
and then she did something really stupid.
y/n curled her fingers into the collar of his williams polo, pulling him towards her as she pressed her lips to his. after a moment of shock, nyck fell into the kiss, his hands coming to hold her hips as their lips moved in perfect harmony with each other, a low moan emanating from the dutchmans throat before y/n pulled away.
“wow.” she said simply, nyck echoing her thoughts, or lack thereof.
“now do you see why I need you to come back to me in one piece?”
nyck exhaled. "listen, y/n, this is a can of worms that I really can't afford to open when i'm about to get in a car going three-hundred miles per hour. but i promise we'll talk about this as soon as i come back, okay? because i have a lot that i really need to tell you."
y/n swallowed the lump in her throat, fighting off tears as she just simply said: "stay safe out there, de vries. remember: medium tyres."
nyck smiled, pained at the thought that he might be causing y/n more emotional pain. but he knew that if he said what she wanted to hear, what he needed to say, he wouldn't make it out onto the racetrack in time.
"medium tyres, got it." he squeezed her hand, ready to walk away before changing his mind at the last second, turning back on his heel to press another kiss to y/n's lips before taking off to go put his fireproofs on.
it hurt her to watch him go, but she had to remember that he also kissed her and she hung on to the hope that what he had to say wasn't going to break her heart in the end.
because she didn't think that she could handle it if it did.
———————
"that's p8 nyck, p8. magnificent job, kid!"
"hey nyck, it's y/n. i'm proud of you, dumbass."
despite himself, nyck laughed. "have you been backseat strategizing this entire time?"
"what, of course not." y/n joked sarcastically. "i might have gaslit jost into offering me a job as race engineer."
"god help us all." nyck chuckled. "can we talk after i've gotten weighed? i'm not mad about what happened earlier, i swear to you, but i have something i need to tell you."
any unease or worry left in y/n's soul evaporated when she saw nyck walking back towards the williams garage, fluffy hair ruffled and matted from the balaclava, helmet in his hand as he opened his arms to engulf y/n in a tight hug, bodies pressed together, fingrs digging into fabric.
"you did it, de vries."
"i'm in love with you." he hadn't meant to start his grand speech like that, the words just slipping out. "and i have been since we were sixteen years old. when you stopped karting, it stung because i wasn't sure if i was ever going to see you again. so when i saw you at the track a few weeks later, learning how to fix an engine, i thought it was a miracle, a sign. but i was too much of a coward to tell you sooner."
"i'm not the kind of girl that guys like you go out with." y/n confessed. "even going to the e-prix i realized that i never fit the mould of what a racing wife was supposed to be like. and when you got into f2 and started travelling a lot, even though you brought me with you as often as you could while i was still in school, i felt lonely and i knew i couldn't put myself through that, that we would never work. even when i was with you, i always felt out of place. i don't look like those other girls with their fancy clothes and their toned stomachs and their modelling careers."
"I'm going to stop you right there, y/n. i'm in love with you. not those other girls, you. tattoos, piercings and assembly-line job and all. and we can make this travel thing work, i promise. but i don't want to spend another day pretending that i don't want to hold you in my arms and kiss every inch of your skin."
“kiss me, nyck.”
nobody needed to tell him twice.
the garage burst out into cheers as they embraced, her lips soft against his. nyck tasted like sweat, but y/n tasted like peppermint from the chap stick she was wearing, the taste of dark chocolate still on her tongue. she cradled his face in her hands, his arms tightening their hold around her waist. one of the engineers ran up to nyck and took his helmet from him so he could hold y/n with both hands, both parties giggling into the kiss, wide smiles on their faces when they finally split apart.
"are you saying that we could have been doing that for eleven years by now?"
nyck lowered his voice, raising an eyebrow in an attempt to be sexy. "then i guess we'd better make up for lost time."
———————
the hotel room window was open, a soft breeze causing the sheer curtains to billow in the wind. clothes were scattered all over the wooden floor: plaid flannel shirt crumpled by the front door, a polo shirt and jeans thrown over the arm chair, tank top draped over the television. nyck and y/n were on the bed, basking in each other's company now that they finally had each other.
the rest of the hotel floor were probably glad that the two were finally finished moaning each other's names at the top of their lungs. it had been a long hour and a half for the people in the rooms on either side.
y/n was wearing one of nycks shirts, bunched up under her breasts to show off her tattoos, the ones that nyck found utterly fascinating as he traced the path that the dragons took from the hem of her calvins and up over her navel with his fingertips.
“why dragons? I’ve always been curious.”
“do you remember when I quit karting?” she paused, waiting for nyck to nod. “it wasnt just because I wasn’t confident in myself any more. that was also the year that I got my diagnosis.”
nyck didn’t mean to say it, it just slipped out: “shit.”
“I was still just a kid, and I was terrified. I couldn’t deal with things properly. the dizziness,the fatigue, shortness of breath. I think one of the hardest parts was learning that I could have problems during pregnancy if I ever decided to have kids. I was young and I was scared. hell, I’m twenty seven and still don’t have kids. I don’t even know if that’s something I want, I just know that I’ve spent too much time being scared. to the celtics, dragons meant courage, and to the chinese dragons represent good fortune. they were two things I thought I needed a bit more of.”
she had been diagnosed with an iron deficiency three months after her performance in karting began to seriously decline. she was holding down the midfield okay, still finishing races in the points, but out of nowhere, she couldn’t keep up with the middle of the pack anymore, she was finishing races out of breath and dizzy. when her period came around, she would just bleed and bleed and bleed, never letting up. that was the year she found out she’d need to spend the rest of her life on iron supplements.
she did some things she regretted that year, and some days she wondered if quitting karting was one of them. it was definitely one of the less irresponsible choices she made, she always wondered if she could have gotten better once she understood her body and her condition a bit better.
but at the same time, her condition had lead her to start fixing engines, which is what lead to her job at porsche.
what lead her back to nyck.
the dutchman took her hand in his. “whatever comes next, I promise you that we’ll get through it together, okay? if you do decide that you want kids, I’ll be right next to you through it all, okay?”
she nodded, tears threatening to fall. “I wouldn’t want them with anybody else but you.”
“I love you, nyck. there’s never been anybody else for me.”

On This Churly Morn, From John Lennon’s In His Own Write (1964)
Leslie arrived at McCartney's house that summer with a bag of gifts from fan-club members ― sketches, poems, trinkets, love letters, and a bouquet of flowers. There was a crowd of girls outside the gate; no one was going in or out except a team of electricians doing repair work. Leslie attached a note to her flowers: Hi, Paul, I'm president of your New York fan club and I brought gifts. Minutes later, the door opened. Which one of you is Leslie?
"I was in his yard for over an hour," she says, "and I brought a heavy reel-to-reel tape recorder. He was fine with it! I asked loads of questions, interviewing him, and as I was going through my stuff I had this book of John's. And he picked it up and started reading from it."
The poem that Paul read that day, "On This Churly Morn," shows Lennon working in the same nonsensical vein, being guided along not by meaning, but by sound, thought-association and even typing mistakes. Though "On This Churly Morn" is not a great poem, its rhythms nonetheless insinuate themselves into the mind. Perhaps its greatest value is that it opens a window onto the artistic process that would power one of our greatest songwriter's greatest works.
After recording McCartney's impromptu reading Leslie took the number 73 bus to the London suburb of Weybridge to meet the Beatles' other front man, the poet himself.
"Everybody said he could be a bit cold, and could be cruel," says Leslie, "but he was amazing. He was warm and nice. I'd seen in the paper that he'd just taken delivery of his psychedelic-painted Rolls Royce. He said, 'You can go sit in it, if you like.' This was like a dream ― but it happened."

Fic: Took My Days With You
I originally posted this on AO3 but wanted to share this with y’all:
There’s one thing that she hated the most about herself:
The fact that she grew up.
Lydia didn’t want to, but that was a part of life. She left fifteen years ago to pursue her dream career of becoming a photographer. Her success with that led to her becoming an author and multiple of her publications became New York Times hits. Her autobiography came soon after, and people were enthralled by her life story. Obviously she had to leave out the... interesting bits of her teenage years other than telling her audience that she lived in a house where the previous tenants died and telling them that she could feel their presence everywhere she went in that house. And she told her story to all who would listen, they seemed to enjoy it claiming that it was all in the name of fiction but to her it was real. When she left, all five of her family members waved farewell and wished her the best of luck. Delia and Charles helped her pack, Adam and Barbara made provisions and supplies for her trip and Beetlejuice, the sentimental bastard, waited and bid farewell to her on the roof where they met. But one devastating phone call from Skye sent Lydia into a panicked frenzy, she hurriedly left her home of Salem, Massachusetts to Winter River, Connecticut. With her car supplied for only a week's worth of clothes, and now 40 years old, she returned to her home. She was always nearby, and never too far from her family, she didn’t have the heart to go that far.
Lydia drove past the sign of Winter River with a somber look on her face, her black convertible rolling down the familiar town. The town didn’t change much, it was still a small town and the nostalgia factor was striking a hard chord in her. She couldn’t stop the wetness running down her cheeks though.. This is where she grew up and now…. it’s gone..
Not like gone, but in the more ‘this no longer feels like home’ vibe. She had a home and lost that one with the death of her mother, but she rebuilt a new one with a second set of (ghost) parents and a strange and unusual best friend. Lydia could see it in the distance, a raggedy looking building faded with age. The surrounding hill hasn’t changed, other than the fact that her dad actually pulled through with that gated community deal with a different partner other than that snob Maxie Dean. It was a nice area though, multiple houses lined the way to her house, or rather the ‘flagship model home’ her dad nicknamed it so long ago.
She pulled up to the driveway, taking note of the dead vegetation around the property. She hasn’t been back in years, and it certainly has seen better days. The paint was chipping off from the wind, and there wasn’t even a strong breeze blowing. No one has lived here for a couple years either. Her father and stepmother died 3 years ago and she never got the chance to return to Winter River. She was always so busy, and whatever time she had to herself, she would throw herself into her work. Always working on the next big thing that her fans would enjoy.
The windows had been covered with wood and the door was left wide open. Multiple cans of bear and graffiti littered the front porch and the front door. Lydia was afraid to enter in, not because of the ghosts that she hoped were still in there, but how empty it looks from the outside.
She left her things in a hotel already and chose to come straight here rather than getting some rest. The hotel manager so it seem, was a big fan of Lydia’s and asked if she was going to return to her house that she used to live in. Rather than disclose that information, she said no. He said it was a shame what happened to her old house, it fell out of repair and no matter how many times realtors wanted to sell it, no one would buy it. According to the locals, no one would buy and live In a house that is haunted by its old occupants. It also became a place that was frequented by juveniles to get a good scare from this place. Which did work cause they claimed that some monster always chased them out. She knew who it was and the reason for Skye’s call:
The monster sightings and other weird stuff happening in her old house suddenly ceased.
The porch creaked beneath her feet, as if the wood would snap at any moment. Normally the Maitlands would come rushing out and greet her at the door and Beetlejuice would be in the living room watching whatever he wanted to, but there was nothing, and that definitely made Lydia pause her advancement towards the rickety old house. Her nose wrinkled from the old, wet, wood smell emanating from the house.
Lydia trudged on anyway and went past through the threshold, and what she saw saddened her. The roof had given out at one point and that pile of wood was tucked away to the side. The living room was a mess, riddled with dust and more garbage thrown around. And call her crazy for keeping it, but the sculpture that she used to stab Beetlejuice with was knocked over. The stand was crushed to smithereens and the pole and the adorning head piece laid far away. The pole was resting by the fireplace and the spiky headpiece was near the base of the stairs. Multiple photos of herself and her family were callously left on the floor, leaving the glass frame shattered and the photos caked with grime.
“Adam? Barbara?” Lydia called out to the empty house, “Lawrence?” her demon adopted brother would usually hiss at her for using his first name, and she got no response from her ghost parents or Beetlejuice. “Anyone home? It’ me, Lydia!” She called again, but only the echoing tones of her voice reached her.
She entered the kitchen next, leaving her just as devastated. The stove had been ripped out of the wall and the table was smashed to pieces, knives, pots and other cooking utensils were scattered on the island, sink and counter tops. the backdoor to the garden was no better. The door hung off its hinges and the backyard was full of dead grass and weeds, like the entire life of the house just disappeared.
Scared of what that entailed, she rushed towards the staircase and climbed up it without disregard. The hand rail fell off the moment she touched it but ran up, ignoring the protesting groans of the wood. She had to know.
She had to.
The hallway was filled with odd bits and bobs of the rooms, a smashed mirror was on the floor, a mattress was laid against the wall, pieces of metal stuck out from the mattress too. Making it seem that someone repeatedly stabbed the thing multiple times. Lydia cautiously stepped around the debris to head towards the door to the attic and out of all things that were destroyed, the door was the only one that looked like it hadn't been touched.
With hope rejuvenating her system, she busted down the door only to find no one inside. The attic was an absolute mess, the room was torn inside and out. Barbara and Adam’s bed was ripped to shreds, the love seat’s ripped and the fluff from inside the cushions were strewn along the floor, Adam’s model town was no longer here and Barbara’s clay pots lay shattered on the shelves. The window opening to the roof is left wide open causing a draft into the room. There was a small pile of clothes in the middle of the room, all looking like it was haphazardly thrown there.
“Adam? Barbara? Beej?” Lydia pleaded to the open air that one of them are still around. “Please, I’m here!” Now she couldn’t stop the tears from forming, “Beetlejuice? Ghost-mom? Ghost-dad? Where are you?!” Lydia started to feel the adrenaline and panic flood into her system, she frantically went to every nook and cranny of the attic throwing anything that might have obscured a hiding ghost, but no luck. There was no trace of the ghost couple and the green haired demon here. Her tearful gaze turned towards the roof, she checked every room of the house and no one responded to her calls.
The cold, crisp autumn air embraced her once more.. The weathervane rusted beyond recognition and the barriers between the edge of the roof and the solid ground she stood on were missing, most likely they were the things stabbed into the mattress. A hoarse scream left her throat and Lydia sunk onto her knees clutching her chest.
They were gone… She was alone, again. Forsaken. Invisible.
Her family has been scattered to the winds, Dad and Delia have expired, only days apart the doctor said. Lydia alone paid for the funeral and their gravesites to be dug, she didn’t return to Winter River. Instead she went straight into her work and wrote a hit, “The Demon Among Us.” It was about her experience with a literal demon, but over analytical professors and English majors chalked up her demon character (Beetlejuice) and said it was a personification of depression. Which would have been awesome… if that was what she wrote about.
Adam and Barbara were nowhere to be found, and the house they loved so much was falling apart. Their precious items, littering the lawn to the backyard to the front yard. If they could see what had happened, they would be surely hopeful and ready to fix it.
Beetlejuice didn’t appear instantly when she called his name, and since Juno was eaten by that Sandworm… Beetlejuice never had a problem with saying his name or getting anyone to say it. He did mention there was a slight tug from the after effects of the curse being lifted, but other than that he said it was manageable.
Lydia cried onto the roof tiles, the family she had built… vanished.
She pounded the ground, cursing herself for not making time, screaming that her life was taken away from her hands again. This was worse than when Emily died, back then she had her father to talk to about things like this. Delia would give insight of finding distractions to move past grief.. While Barbara and Adam gave Lydia a shoulder to cry one whenever she was upset. Beetlejuice made her laugh again and even though he was dead, or born-dead, he made her see that life is worth living. That even if it is a struggle, she could pull through.
Now they were not here, her decaying memories and odd photos of the family were the only things that helped remind her that they existed and were real to her.
“Lydia?”
Lydia turned around to find the familiar stench and sight of her black and white striped demon best friend. She gasped, got up and ran towards her friend. The demon had his arms wide open for her to collide into which she crashed into wholeheartedly.
“Beetlejuice…” she cried into his lapel.
“Heya scarecrow.. nice to see ya. You’ve changed.” Beetlejuice shakily rubbed her back.
“And you haven’t,” she let go to take a good look at him, “Oh Beej, your hair.”
Beetlejuice sadly smiled, his hair being a deep purple with even darker blue tips, his dress shirt was tinged purple too. She now got a better look at him, his face, stained with tears and wrinkle lines dominated his forehead. His eye bags were heavy as if he didn’t sleep for a long time. “I know.” He replied, “Things happened when you were away.”
“What happened?”
“The Maitlands…” His breath hitched. “They’re gone.”
Lydia stared at Beetlejuice and waited for the punchline. This was Beetlejuice, he was a prankster. Lydia laughed a little.
“You’re joking right?” She playfully shoved him, “They probably moved to the Netherworld, did you check there?”
“I checked… They aren’t.”
“Bullshit.”
“I’m serious. They’re gone… Adam, Barbara… They vanished.” Beetlejuice rubbed his shoulder, “I’ve searched the Netherworld top and bottom, they aren’t there.”
Lydia stood dumbfounded, staring at Beetlejuice with wide-eyes.
“Here, I’ll tell ya what happened.”
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
2 years ago
The couple scared off its next batch of kids that thought it was cool to party when the Maitlands were around still, haunting their now decaying house. Beetlejuice hung around giving the ghastly couple tips on what could be scary for these new kids coming in and trashing their house. Delia and Charles passed peacefully during a trip at their vacation spot in Lake Tahoe. They never got to go to the funeral, but letters addressed to Lydia were mailed here. Offering condolences to her and informing any other occupants that the Deetz couple have passed away.
The house quickly fell in disarray, Barbara and Adam couldn’t step outside the house in fear of being teleported to Saturn and being eaten by a Sandworm, so the plant life outside died. Beetlejuice tried to revitalize the plants by gardening, but nothing he did made the grass green again and the plants to grow. Barbara and Adam tried their best to coach Beetlejuice but the pants wouldn’t grow. Nothing was growing in the house.
At one point, during a cold winter, the three had become a throuple. Barbara initially asked Beetlejuice if he was interested, and with Adam’s happy smile, the three became a relationship. They slept on the same bed, kept each other company, and scared everyone who dared enter their territory. They kept the house unoccupied in hopes of Lydia returning one day.
But she never did.
One day when Beetlejuice was finishing scaring off a particular group of kids who seemed impervious to his usual tactics, returned to the attic to celebrate another successful spook, only to find no one there. Thinking it was a joke, Beetlejuice playfully rummaged through the attic to find his partners. Nothing. The roof was next and still: nothing. He checked all points of the house and each empty room he entered, he got more worried and scared that they have been abducted into the Netherworld by one of Beetlejuice’s enemies. After Juno, a lot of Netherlings seemed to come after Beetlejuice. He easily deflected them off but now if they came after the people he loved then there would be hell to pay.
He investigated the attic once more to see if there was any sign of struggle but there was nothing. Not even evidence of a door being open to the Netherworld. He checked anyway, he drew his passageway to the Netherworld and entered. Beetlejuice asked multiple people if they have seen the couple anywhere, and all of them have said they haven’t. Even Miss Argentina said she never saw them, and they were decades past their date of death. If they came through to the Netherworld, she would’ve seen them.
Beetlejuice returned to the house with a broken heart, and fearing the worst, he thought they were done with life. Done with him, and teleported themselves to Saturn for suicide. But that didn’t sit right with him, Adam and Barbara said they loved him. That they cared for him, was that all a lie?
Beetlejuice transported himself to Saturn to search for his partners, and when a Sandworm started following him and nudging at his palm, he concluded that Sandy was the one who followed him and consumed the Maitlands. At first he was furious, hair flushed a deep red and yelled at the Sandworm to spit out the couple, if he was there early enough they could be still alive within the Sandworm. Sandy tilted her head to the side like a dog, confused why Beetlejuice was yelling at her.
He continued to berate the worm into telling him where they are, but Sandy only stared with puzzlement.
Beetlejuice cried and begged Sandy to show him where they at least ended up so he could say goodbye on top of their graves, she agreed and took both Beetlejuice and herself back to the attic. She shrunk and dragged herself to the middle of the attic and curled around herself.
Beetlejuice finally understood.
The Maitlands have… died, again.
After some time, if they don’t go to the Netherworld, ghosts usually fade into nothingness. He has seen it a couple times, and all of them writhed and squealed with pain. It was sudden too, you never know when it will happen. Beetlejuice had gotten enthralled with the prospect of being loved for the first time that he forgot about this and he paid the price.
He then let an anguished cry, and laid on top of the floor. He was unable to hold them as they reduced to ash and disappeared into the void. He scratched the floor and roared. The entire house shook, and he left the attic in a flurry of rage and grief. Beetlejuice tore through each room, tearing it asunder and plowing it of all  memory of a happy family within each wall. He grabbed the metal spikes from the roof and stabbed them into a mattress, he tore the oven out of the kitchen wall and threw it out the door. He brought his fist through the table and slit his arms with the knives over and over again. Causing them to bleed over and over again. He smashed Delia’s sculpture next, throwing each piece to the opposite ends of the room. He returned to the attic and smashed Barbara’s pottery and set Adam’s model ablaze.
He blamed them, he blamed himself for falling in love, he blamed their stupidity for not heading to the Netherworld when they had a chance, he blamed the universe. Cursing it. It took away his happiness and he would burn down the world to force people to feel how he felt.
But he couldn’t, it would dishonour their names. It would dishonour his love to them, he won’t hurt anyone. He’ll scare off anyone who comes nearby the grieving demon.
People started coming in troves everyday, and it was fulfilling at first… But without them, it meant nothing. Beetlejuice became defeated, each scream never satisfied him as much anymore. Not without them.
He collected a pile of Adam and Barbara’s clothing and placed them in the middle of the attic floor and he would sleep on it, and he would dream the sweetest dreams. Adam and Barbara cuddling him and making him feel loved. He would dream of everyone, Barbara, Charles, Delia, Adam and Lydia having a great time. He would dream of Christmas parties and softer moments with his partners. Sometimes he dreamt of memories, a kiss there, a fleeting touch, a smell from Barbara’s perfume and Adam’s cologne would linger in the air when he suddenly woke.
He always woke up crying, knowing that he’ll never have them again.
And one day, he wrote a note:
To the Maitlands,
For the past couple of months I haven’t been able to sleep much or if not, not sleeping at all. I mean, I already had problems sleeping but with your disappearance, it got worse. By all means, this does not seem like I am pointing fingers or blaming anyone… Although it is easy to blame someone for something.. I loved and still love you guys. I still do… I mean it, one hundred percent. All those little kisses we shared, stay with me everyday. Any place I want to be, I want you guys here with me. With you guys, my whole undead life found meaning again. My world, my days, my nights, my hopes, my dreams, was there in front of me and I didn’t do anything about it. This place fills me sorrow, and I can’t bear being here without you two.
Thinking back, you had grand ideas and many stories that the world should’ve heard. All the things you’ve told me were fascinating. All those conversations we’ve had will always be in my memories. Even forgotten, they will be there.
Each day it is depressing to know that I’ll never get to see you two ever again. You guys had so many things to do, and I was left with those broken hopes and dreams. I’ll never get to see your happy faces and feel the same happiness you two gave me, this hurts beyond human and even demon comprehension.
You know, all the time I ever smile and laugh, I instantaneously frown and have a huge wave of sadness run over me. The thought of: “why are you happy? You don’t deserve to be happy.” shut me down. Even with the sweaters and photos left behind, it has both given me great relief and immense sadness. Cause it is a constant reminder that you’re not here with me.. Selfish as it is, I just wished I would’ve spent one more day with you. And I would do anything to have that one last day.
I am haunted with each day that passes. Most, if not all, of my dreams always have you in them. I see you, I hear you, I feel you. When I wake, I loathe to get out of bed. Cause I want to be with you, even if it was just a dream.
Countless memories flood my mind each night before I sleep. From the time I harassed you two, and to the time where we three fell in love. I am overcome with joy and sadness when thinking with those memories. And I’m sad I can’t make more with you. I don’t sleep until 3 or even 5 AM because the thought of seeing you in my dreams puts me in great agony and some nights I lay in anticipation for you to come barreling to my room saying that more breathers have entered the house.
I’m sorry that I’m saying all of this now that you’re gone. I’m sorry I think about you every night. I’m sorry for my brash and lewd nature. I’m sorry that I didn’t make enough time for you two. I’m sorry that I didn’t try hard enough. And I know I am apologizing for nothing but it hurts. Everything hurts. Everyday I’m putting on a mask to hide my emotions because I’m afraid.
I will never stop looking for you in this house. I will never stop hearing your booming laughter in these hallowed halls. I will never take down your photos. I will never stop being your friend and lover.
Everyone knew that there was something wrong with all three of us being dead and all… You two knew what was wrong with me, and I to you. We comforted each other at times, You guys were smart. Funny. Talented and beautiful. And undeniably sexy. A couple with hearts of gold.
I love and miss you guys,
BJ
Beetlejuice wrote multiple letters that he left scattered to the winds, and everyday he thought it was all a nightmare and he would wake up to find them on top of him smiling their bright smiles at him. But no, he would wake up to empty air and breathers rummaging around the house. Beetlejuice kept the door to the attic shut and would lock each time a breather would try to pick the lock.
He hoped that they would walk in through a portal from the Netherworld and make him feel better but it never happened. Days passed, weeks, months and eventually a year.
He laid unmoving from the pile of clothes, until a voice called out to the empty house.
“Adam? Barbara? Lawrence? Anyone home? It’s me-“
It was Lydia.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
At one point during his retelling, Lydia and Beetlejuice went to the roof and sat on the edge just like they used to do. They cried together, comforted each other. Lydia hugged Beetlejuice when he stopped to catch his panicking breath, and returned it to Lydia when she curled into herself. They stayed like that for minutes and finally moved when Lydia stood.
She wiped her eyes, “Beej we have to leave. It’s not healthy for us to stay here,” she looked over to the setting sun. “I rented a place here for a week, it would be nice if I had a friend with me,” Beetlejuice opened his mouth but was cut off by Lydia, “I know, I want to stay here too, grab a picture of them and grab a piece of their clothing and maybe find their perfume and cologne”
“But what if they come back?” Beetlejuice asked her, with desperate hope in his eyes.
“I… wouldn’t bet on it Beej,” she sadly replied, “Here I’ll help you grab some stuff.”
Lydia headed back towards the house with Beetlejuice following. They grabbed one of Adam’s green flannels and one of Barbara’s oversized coats. During her time in this house, she found a way to take a picture of the ghost couple, and Beetlejuice took the family photo and stuffed it within his suit pocket. Barbara’s perfume and Adam’s cologne was stuffed in a closet that was full of their junk, Lydia quickly did a search on her phone. Luckily enough, the companies that made the perfume and cologne still made them.
Their treasures in hand, they headed towards Lydia's car in silence. They both got in and headed towards the hotel.
“Wait, before night falls, I have to show you something.” Lydia quickly made a detour, and reared towards the graveyard.
“Lyds, the graveyard?” He asked incredulously.
“Just wait, I came here once and discovered something. Got that letter with you still?”
“Yeah, why?”
“You’ll see.” Lydia smiled at her demon best friend.
They pulled into the parking lot and Lydia frantically left her vehicle, yakking at Beetlejuice to come after her. She has been here before and quickly went down the path. During the ride, Beetlejuice had changed into Adam’s flannel and donned Barbara’s coral coat. It was warm underneath, and he could still smell them.
“M….” Lydia scanned through the multiple rows. “Here! Lawrence come on!”
Beetlejuice slowly trudged down the path, meeting Lydia at two gravestones. Two gravestones, engraved with the Maitland’s names. A little poem alternating between the two headstones:
Warm summer sun,
   Shine kindly here,
Warm southern wind,
    Blow softly here.
Green sod above,
   Lie light, lie light.
Good night, dear heart,
    Good night, good night.
Beetlejuice immediately seized and collapsed to his knees, hugging the two marbled stones.
“I’ll be in the car if you need anything,” Lydia rubbed his shoulder and left Beetlejuice there crying.
“Thank you Lydia.” Beetlejuice looked at her with sad eyes.
Lydia nodded and walked away, her boots digging into the gravel path, the sound retreating as she got further and further away.
Beetlejuice rubbed the gravestones longingly, hoping that wherever they ended up that they might feel his soothing touch. Lydia brought him here to say goodbye and to leave the letter he wrote.
He couldn’t do It right away, but opted to sit there a little while longer. It seemed like ages went by but he knew that Lydia would be in the car and she had to go to bed and eat sometime. He’d hate to leave but he could always teleport here anytime. Beetlejuice bit down on his thumb, biting down hard enough to make it bleed. Knowing a rune that he had learned as a child, smeared his blood on Adam and Barbara’s grave. A triangle and three circles on each point and then a small inverted heart in the middle. He’s going to come here often.
Beetlejuice summoned a bouquet of flowers for each of them.
For Adam:
Rosemary
A Crimson Rose
Purple Hyacinth
Red Carnation
For Barbara:
Pink Carnation
Primrose
Sweet Pea
Forget-me-nots
He placed them and stood up, but before he would forget, he dug a little hole where he stuffed his letter in. They wouldn’t read it, but having it nearby their graves made it feel like that would.
He returned to the car soon after, and let himself in. Lydia had it running and was ready to go when he got in.
“Thanks again,” Beetlejuice said softly.
“You needed closure and you can always come back,” Lydia leaned over her seat and hugged her best friend again. “I’ll miss them everyday.” She sighed. Beetlejuice nodded his head in agreement, it was a small movement but nonetheless it was seen. His hair throughout this entire interaction has never reverted to its usual green, staying on that deep purple and blue. Lydia let go and drove to her hotel.
It will never be the same for Beetlejuice ever again, he loved them and knows he’ll never see them again and will never feel that same love again. Sure, Lydia is his best friend, but nothing would fill that void left in his unbeating heart after today. Lydia reassured him that time heals all wounds and even she missed her dead mom, dad and step-mom but it got easier when she met people like Beetlejuice to make her feel better. He had a little flutter in his chest but paid no mind to it. He wished that he didn’t have to live this cursed world, but having good company made it worth the while.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
They watched the car drive past the graveyard gates from up above, tears flowing down their faces. They didn’t want to fade away but that’s the next progression of their after life. They initially believed that the Netherworld was definitely the end, but here? The Aether was just as everyone imagined it to be, like the Netherworld, they were forbidden to interact with the realms but they could watch whenever and whom ever they pleased.
This made Adam and Barbara so happy. They loved Beetlejuice and it broke their hearts seeing him mope for months until Lydia stopped by. They wanted to hug them but it was not allowed.
“Thank you Beetlejuice, we love you.” Barbara whispered.
“Lawrence, I’ll never forget you.” Adam wiped away a tear from his face.

How To Pick The Best Garage Door
How to Find the Best Garage Door
If you want to maximize the value of your home, you'll find garage doors are an easy and affordable method to increase your home's curb appeal. A good garage door will distinguish it from the rest of the neighborhood. For something extra special, custom made garage doors can be designed to your specifications.
The most common types of garage doors are: Retractable, Canopy Side, and Hinged Sectional Retractable. Where limited space in your driveway is an issue, sectional garage doors are the right choice. They open and shut vertically, allowing cars to park very close to the door without keeping it from opening. Among the wide variety of designs, the most popular garage doors are sectional, upward acting, and self storing.
The Types of Garage Doors
Gone are the old manual doors. Today you'll find that remote controlled and motorized garage doors have produced a more usable garage. The most popular style is the overhead garage door.
The primary concern in planning your garage door is the material used. Selecting the best garage door materials for your needs will depend on a few things like the style of your home, and how warm you want your garage to be. There are 3 main materials for garage door construction: Wood, Steel and Fiberglass (GRP).
When you're planning to install a garage door, you must consider door type and materials. You can also incorporate into your plan such things as heated garages or unique window options.
The Most Popular Style is the Overhead Garage Door
Overhead garage doors are by far the most popular type of garage door available to homeowners. With automatic stop and begin features, people find overhead garage doors easy to use, with wonderful options and safety features.
Overhead garage doors work with a rolling system. The door rolls up and stores along the roof of the garage. Overhead door features to look for are that they are smooth, quiet and compact. Installing an overhead garage door is simple; do it yourself, or get help from the manufacturer. Popular garage door manufacturers include Garaga, Liftmaster, Raynor or DBCI.
The Appeal of Wood
Wood garage doors are preferred more for their appearance and affordability than for their durability.
You can select wood types like solid cedar for a durable garage door, which will last for years and look wonderful. Sections of roll-up wood doors may have either panel or flush construction. For panel doors, manufacturers fit several separate, rectangular panels into a wooden frame. Flush sections are made by fastening a plywood panel on top of a wooden frame.
The main disadvantage to a wooden garage door is that wood expands and contracts and can warp or crack as it weathers. It demands re-painting or refinishing every couple of years to keep it looking good and in top condition.
Steel Garage Doors Have Many Advantages
The main advantage to steel garage doors is that they won't warp, crack, or fall apart because of weather. With no painting or refinishing requirements, steel doors are a low maintenance possibility that will keep your home looking stylish. Nowadays most steel garage doors are made of hot-dipped galvanized steel that is vinyl clad or given a baked on polyester finish. They will not rust or require repainting like wooden doors.
Another important advantage of steel garage doors is that they achieve the look of wood without the maintenance. Some have grained steel skins that can be stained to look just like wood. A design mimicking carriage house doors has become quite popular for nearly a decade. Some manufacturers use composite or vinyl boards on the exterior of a steel door to make it look like an outward swinging door.
The only disadvantage to steel doors is that they dent and can be difficult to repair. A premium door is often 2 inches thick, filled with insulation, and clad in 24-gauge steel. Less-expensive doors are usually thinner and made of 28 gauge steel. So steel offers real benefits over wood; it costs less and it needs much less maintenance and with can look just like wood.
The Assets of Fiberglass
Fiberglass, sometimes called GRP, garage doors are chosen for locations where light is important or in salty ocean climates. GRP garage doors need only mild exterior cleaning to retain their quality finish. They generally they do not need to be stained or finished. The most popular style for a GRP garage door is the retractable garage door. Fiberglass is a tough and durable material which will keep looking good for years.
Conclusions
Each of garage door material has its own benefits: Steel up and over doors are sturdy and give great value for money; wood doors are insulated and have an appealing look, and fiberglass up and over garage doors are extremely low maintenance offering a timber effect without the maintenance of real wood. Which ever you pick you'll be sure that it will elevate the curb appeal and the value of your home, and increase your feeling of security.

"REPAIRED "
conti...
Nick, Carol and George are stunned by what they've witnessed.
" Did you hear that? "Larry and Hal are runnin' a con, they're chiseling all the customers " " That explains a lot " says Nick. "We need to go to the cops, they can't get away with this, we need more evidence" says George" " Yeah, we need more proof " "Not tonight says Nick. "We gotta plan this out ". " Carol you can't be involved in this!" " Why? says Carol. "It's way to dangerous! George says. "Listen you two. You need more proof, I can pinch the files and receipts. "I know where they are " " I ain't no chippy ya know. I'm the Secretary, I'm a Michigan girl.
"We build cars, bombs, planes and..tanks too! Nick and George look at each other. Nick relents and says.."George she's right. " But" spurts George. " First we gotta catch them in a snatch." Nick pauses. " " Carol says Nick. "You'll be the pump of it all". But we have to go slow poke first" Nick winks at George. "Yes! Oh yes, that's right says George. If we're not careful, it could all be jazzed " says Nick. "Well don't you two get behind the eight ball. And don't give me the bum's rush. "You'll tell me everything ok? Tell me everything! (George and Nick) DEAL!!
The sun peaks around the majestic Chrysler building as another day in the Motor City roars. Carl's car screeches to a halt near a curb. " I'll be waiting ma'am". says Carl. Ruby steps out of the car and glides through a revolving door. Her swift steps on the marble floor, echo through the station. Sounds of hissing and horns blowing, the Metro is always busy. BOARD!
"Train number five from Philadelphia, now arriving gate two". Ruby's steps quicken, she smiles. And arrives by the gates, weaving back and forth, searching the ramps excitedly. "Train number nine, arriving gate five from Chicago". Ruby's smiles wider as she spots me coming up the ramp. Her smile suddenly drops. We had spoken on the horn before I'd left. I didn't have the guts to tell her I had a goog and gotten some chin music in Chicago. "Kid, you're hurt" "I'm ok doll, nothing serious". Ruby's puts her arms around me. Ow! I winced. " All right kid spill it! She says. Ruby would've kept up till I gave her a full peaching". "A boozehound got off a lucky shot. I clocked him". "Why did you do that? "I saw him smackin around a dame, he had no manners. "He'll be lucky to be a father anytime soon." Ruby snickered. "Sticking up for every skirt in the world, that's my kid". "Hey!, let's get some lunch '. I looked at Ruby like a sad sack. Ruby, I said, how about we just go home?
"Alright, come on love, I'll patch you up. Ruby says. Hey! Gimme your hat! Ruby smiles. I laughed. "I love you in my hat" I said Ruby grinned. "Oh you will, you will. I smiled at Ruby tongue in cheek. We picked up the baggage to one last announcement, "Train number four departing for New York City, gate seven, BOARD!
Carl had parked right outside the exit. He delivers the crew everywhere. Good man with bent cars too. "Hey boss, welcome home!"he said. "Good to see you too Carl". "Home, and step on it". At the apartment I unlocked the door. Ruby pulled me inside still in my hat, she offered with her coat. Wearing my hat and a string of oyster fruit-my kitten-classy. Unquestionably, it was peaches to be home.
Sleepy-eyed and spooning. Ruby turns and elbows me in the eye. "OW!" "Oh ,I'm so sorry kid,"(she rolls her lips over and giggles) "Dannget Kitten" " Oh hush, ya big baby...here....Ruby returns with a frozen bag of peas. " Is this what you meant by lunch "? I said. Ruby snickers and we both burst into laughter.
Arms around my kitten, I'm happily counting a few more sheep.

wow blu! your "The Wife & Ex-Husband" it's really good, very complex and a mess but really good, as always jay with his love for women, but he loves too much women hehe what have you got yourself in, jay? oh this is going to be fun, a little drama but can't wait to see/read the next chap. :))
Hello,
I’m glad you’ve enjoyed the first chapter of Forgot to Love You, I’ve actually got a whole story going for it for the time being so I hope you continue to enjoy it! Here’s the second chapter, also able to be found here:
https://archiveofourown.org/works/21209576/chapters/50517893
Not Ex-Husband...
Raven survived the rest of her night by the skin of her teeth, which was why she felt so utterly exhausted walking into her hotel room, peeling off her painful heels, and undoing her complicated Viking braids. Dolphin had had a lot of fun with Raven’s hair earlier today and she had just left her friend’s work in place. Gingerly peeling off the loose, soft, skimpy red dress she dropped it to the floor as she walked for her bed, collapsing on it.
Right now she was just immensely happy she hadn’t taken up her uncle’s offer on taking the guest room in his penthouse, she just wanted peace.
Rolling over she stared at the ceiling, pulling her covers up to her chin as she thought about tonight. Specifically her ex-husband was on her mind, it hadn’t been long ago when he had been on her mind last time.
‘So what’s a girl like you doing in a place like this?’ he had chuckled, pressing his glass to his bruised cheek.
‘Probably the same thing a place like this is doing in a guy like you,’ she mused.
‘Ooo! A Deadpool fan!’ he mused.
‘Obviously,’ she had laughed gesturing to her shirt; the crude drawing of Deadpool shooting Francis while screaming ‘Where’s Francis!?’
‘Well, love, it’s a pleasure to meet you,’ he offered his hand.
‘Raven,’ she had said as she shook his hand. His lips brushed her bruised and bloodied knuckles.
‘Jason,’ he smiled with his split lip. He was devilishly handsome.
It was only later, she thought bitterly, that she learned he was there trying to get over a heartbreak. His fiancée; Donna; had run off with his best man; Roy Harper, and Raven had watched it on the media. From the safety of her family ranch in New Mexico while she plotted out her next moves.
She had gone to Hawaii to study humpback whales with Garth. She had stayed with the Curry family for two years, and in that time she had mastered surfing, gotten over her heartbreak, lived on a boat, went swimming in the reefs, learned to snorkel, and scuba dive, and got to survive loosing her mom. Lucifer and Maze had been most sympathetic to her plight, but they didn’t know the whole story. Only that she had met a guy in New Zealand, fallen hard and fast for him and it was all a mistake. She had never told them she married the guy, or that she had married him in a drunken haze that she couldn’t remember.
Everyday since she had left was a struggle not to call Jason, not to turn around and go back to ruin his life. Raven couldn’t do that to the man, he was just too good for her. He didn’t even know how good he was, and that was what made it all the more painful in her mind. He didn’t know what she was capable of, or what she’d do, he didn’t know how far she could go to survive or how horrible she could truly be. They were friends, people who just clicked together like old friends, and it had worked. Jason had made her happy, and she knew she’d ruin him if she stayed. She ruined everything afterall.
Her phone buzzed which had her picking it up as she fought her heavy eyes and stared at the simple text from Jason.
-Can we grab some coffee tomorrow? We need to talk.
Simple, neat, to the point. He was always to the point. Raven looked at the clock, wincing at the time then she looked at the text again.
-Can’t do coffee in the morning, how about lunch?
She kicked herself for offering to spend more time with him, after all she was his vacation mistake.
-Sure, still like Thai?
-Yes.
-I got a place, want me to get you?
-Sure. I’m staying at LUX.
-I’ll txt before I come
-ok. Nite.
She dropped her phone before rolling over and staring out her window at the lights of LA. She had no idea why she was doing this. He was the ex-husband! They had parted, on good terms even. Though she supposed he had more questions for her because she had just left him with three things before she had run off.
Closing her eyes she saw that moment when she knew this was all a huge vacation mistake.
She had come rushing down to the lobby on the phone, negotiating with the airlines to get back to Colorado; Durango, where her mom was hospitalized. It had taken her an over a day, with multiple airlines, and her uncle fast tracking her money and getting her shortcuts, to get back stateside. Raven had jogged into the lobby to see him with a woman who looked like a gorgeous model.
The other woman; who she would later learn was Donna Troy, Princess of Greece, sister to the Queen; Diana Prince; was tall, almost as tall as Jason was, long curly black hair, and features of a Greek Goddess. Raven wanted to punch the woman in her stupid face, but knew she couldn’t, especially when the woman grabbed Jason, spun him to her and kissed him. Raven had bolted at that sight; because she knew she couldn’t handle that and she ran for a lawyer. Drawing up the divorce was quick and simple, because she and Jason had shared nothing and nothing was in each other’s name, she also laughed it off as a drunk mistake.
Once all that was taken care of, she had gone to her hotel, he wasn’t there, so she packed up. Leaving him with a brief note, the papers, and the ring she grabbed her bags and ran for the airport with her passport in hand. She had made it to her gate, barely, had her stuff mailed to her and made it to the States in the span of twenty-seven hours. Literally forty hours after she’d gotten the call from her aunt that her mom was in the hospital and her stepfather didn’t think her mom had much time.
~~~*~*~*~~~
Jason stood in his hotel, staring out at the city, smiling a bit at the text Raven had sent him saying night, and slipped it into his pocket.
He had never told anyone, but his grandfather, Alfred, that Raven leaving him had royally pissed him off. And even then, he wasn’t mad at her, he was mad with himself. Raven was, hands down, the best damn thing to ever happen to him at the second worst point in his entire life.
The day he was supposed to get married to Donna Troy, his childhood sweetheart, and first love, she runs into the room he was getting ready and demanded to know how he felt about her. Not the best timing, he got it, but him not giving her an immediate answer had her blurting out everything she felt. They’d been together for so long, even when they had both had wild affairs, or been broken up, that they just landed back together because it’s what everyone expected of them. They were expected of everyone, from around the world, and Donna said that she was tired of it. She wanted to know what they wanted, just them and not what the world wanted of them. Jason didn’t have an answer for that, because he had honestly never thought about it.
Donna Troy was his endgame.
Always had been.
When he was a PJ, when he was Bruce Wayne’s billionaire screw up, when he was the punk teenager, he had never thought about it. Donna Troy was just there, and they were the endgame for each other. Or so he had thought.
She had, in her frustrations and fury, blurted out that she’d been having an affair with his best friend; Roy Harper, for years, and that’s when he had started in on her. The only times he had ever dated anyone else or slept with anyone else was when he was certain they were not together. They both lost their tempers, she ran from the church in her wedding gown, with Roy in hand, and the media had exploded with it.
Jason, in his spiteful fury towards his family and fiancée had taken the honeymoon tickets and taken the trip. Two weeks into his running away attempt he had withdrawn a shit ton of cash, ditched his credit cards, and his former cellphone, taken his private passport, and left with nothing but his go-bag from France, and made his way to Australia. Somehow, and he still wasn’t entirely sure about how, he had landed in New Zealand, and the first night there; in some hole in the wall, divvy pub he had met Raven Rachel Roth.
She was in New Zealand, finishing her exchange program, studying to be a Marine Biologist to work with her best friend; Garth Curry; who was studying orca hunting patterns in New Zealand at the time. She loved to read; probably more than he did, which was a true feat in his mind; she adored New York pizza, rooted for the New York Mets, believed in Magic, loved dogs, and animals as a whole, wanted to help people, and was probably a bigger tea lover than Alfred. He thought her to be the most mesmerizing person he had ever met. She was beautiful, quiet, commanding and classy. She was classy as fuck when she was cursing like a sailor after kicking ass; she might be a pacifist, but she knew how to kick ass when the time called for it.
He found her to be the most interesting person he had ever met, though she was eerily quiet and gentle.
He didn’t know what it was about Raven, but they just clicked, it was like he had known her all his life with how they were. Which was the only reason when he had woken up with a naked Raven in his arms, and a marriage certificate he didn’t remember getting, that he didn’t freak out. While she finished her program, he sorted out his shit, picking up an odd job or two repairing boats, cars, and even a few planes. Raven hadn’t let him move in with her, her dorm was occupied by messy roommates, so he had let her live in his hotel room. He had been contemplating getting a flat so they could stay together and sort their shit out.
Though that all changed in the span of a day.
He’d been walking for his hotel when Donna had materialized in front of him. He had been texting Raven about dinner plans, intending to talk to her about their marriage and the next thing they should do. Her program was coming to a close, and he knew she had family stateside. He wanted her to meet his family, and he wondered if she wanted him to meet hers; she had talked animatedly about them, but also vaguely.
Donna was just standing there, dressed in cream, looking like a classic Greek goddess; not a single curl out of place as her dark eyes assessed him carefully for hints. He didn’t know what to think, brushing her off to try to escape, when she had pleaded to talk with him. Apparently, his family was freaking out because no one could find him, and she had hired a PI to track him down. Jason thought they were all being over dramatic, he was royally pissed, and hurt, and had every damn right to feel that way. Also humiliated, greatly humiliated.
But this was Donna and they were Donna and Jason so he couldn’t blow her off like he wanted to do. However, he would do anything to keep the Princess of Greece away from the woman he loved, because he did not need Donna to attack Raven. He knew she’d do it, Donna had done it to all his other exes in the past; Kara, Isabel, Artemis, Violet, so he wanted her as far away from Raven as he could get her. He’d been shocked when Donna had casually pulled him into a kiss; like muscle memory, but he didn’t kiss her back. Instead he had pushed her away and told her very firmly they weren’t do that again; ever, and if she thought differently, he’d happily escort her to the Greek Embassy and walk away. Jason had no problem walking away from her without talking to her, he had zero problems with it.
Instead they had walked, walked to a different, far more upscale hotel where his father was waiting for him with two of his siblings, and Alfred. Jason wanted to be pissed, he did, especially when he saw Roy, but he couldn’t find it in him to be pissed. He had Raven, and that didn’t make the world better, but it made him alright.
It had taken over a day of interrogation before his family was satisfied, he hadn’t been abducted, but they wanted to meet Raven. By the time he had finally gotten them to come around to the idea that he had made a friend who was not in the service with him, or someone they knew, and got them to want to meet her, she was gone. Hotel concierge had told him she had run out of here with her bags in a hurry for the airport, and that she looked panicked.
Jason had rushed up to their room to find nothing but the divorce papers, a note and the gaudy ring he had gotten her when he was drunk.
He had never felt so terrified as then, she was gone. Like she had never been there. All her things were packed and gone, not a stray piece of clothing or even the socks she’d stuff in between the couch cushions, a hoodie of his was also gone, and he didn’t know if she had done that intentionally or not. But whatever had called her off must’ve been important, because she’d have never left her program without reason. All he had was a note, the divorce papers, and that gaudy ring.
She had laughed at the ring, endlessly laughing and wore it on a chain around her neck, not on her finger; it was too big for her slim hands in her mind. Though she wore thousands of slim rings on her fingers, but not that one. That one was always worn around her neck on a chain. He hadn’t signed the divorce papers, he couldn’t, he didn’t know what went wrong with them to make her actually get them. The papers were straightforward, they had shared no assets, or joined households; they had been two independent people bound by a Catholic Captain; Daniel Cassidy, on a ship for whale watching, into the holy sacrament of marriage. Jason’s mom would’ve skinned him alive if she knew he had the divorce papers; as his mom had been Catholic and didn’t believe in divorce. That’s part of how he had become Bruce Wayne’s son actually.
But she was gone.
Her note was simple, straight to the point, and blunt.
Dear Jason,
Something’s come up, I must go, right now. I’m sorry. I don’t know what to do, but I feel this is for the best, it was a delight meeting you and I will always consider you my dearest of friends. But our time has come to an end, and I’m sorry. I wish you all the best. I’ll let you go, so I think it’s best you let me go.
Forever, with Love,
Raven
She had given him every out she thought he would need, but he couldn’t bring himself to sign those papers. Nor could he get rid of the note. He now wore her wedding ring on the chain, under his shirt, he kept her note neatly folded in his wallet, and the divorce papers in a folder in his suitcase; on the off chance they ran into each other and she truly wanted that bloody divorce.
He hadn’t looked for her, though he could easily track Garth down and demand to know where she was. Her line ‘I don’t know what to do’ always struck him as her way of saying she was scared, and she wanted to do this alone, the divorce was so she could do it alone. He wouldn’t file it though, he couldn’t.
With great reluctance he had followed his family back to Gotham. Dick was miffed when Jason bought a Mets mug, though Jason despised the Mets as the eternal rival of the Gotham Knights. Tim thought he was heartbroken over Donna and promptly tried to set him up on several dates with the help of Duke and Stephanie. Cass insisted he was sad and always tried to get him to talk about it. Damian thought he was dramatic and should take Donna back; which had had Jason punching his baby brother in the mouth, because he’d never go back to Donna. Terry, Helena, B Jr., and Tommy mostly thought he had a dark secret and tried to uncover it.
Jason had only told Alfred about Raven, and shown Alfred the photos, the proof that she existed; though she had tried to erase herself from his life pretty damn well. Alfred approved of her, and continuously tried to push him to hunt her down, even after Alfred had read the note. Jason thought Alfred had valid points, but he couldn’t.
Until Australia, he had actively not thought about Raven, until that terrifying call. Much to B’s frustrations, and his family’s fury, he had dropped everything at the drop of a hat and bolted. Alfred and Selina had arranged his flight.
She was gone by the time he got there, nary a trace of her.
It was B’s wife, Selina who had tracked her down and done a casual run in with her to confirm she was alive for him. Selina had run into Raven in Seattle, where she was at the time, dating a man named Garfield Logan, and living with a woman named Rose Wilson. She was alright, and in one piece, Jason had nearly collapsed at the news, but resolved to stay away from her so she could be happy. She was dating someone, she had built another little life for herself, and he wanted her happy.
It was the only time he had considered signing the divorce papers and letting her go fully.
He hadn’t though.
He could never figure out why. He could never get the nerve to call her, to reconnect, nor could he find it in him to sign the bloody divorce papers. He kind of hoped she’d find out and track him down to yell at him, but she hadn’t ever come. Five years and she had never come after him, it unnerved him until tonight.
Setting his drink aside he walked to his bed and sat on it as he thought over Raven and what seeing her had stirred up.
Tomorrow he would talk to her, tomorrow he would tell her they were not divorced and he would beg, on his hands and knees if he had to, beg her for a second chance. He would do whatever she wanted, but he didn’t want to let her go; never again.
Raven cursed God for creating morning, she cursed existence for it, and she cursed her Aunt for calling her about Passover plans, and if she’d make it to Long Island for the celebration with her grandfather and cousins. Raven had barely said sure before hanging up and cursing morning. Coffee was not her normal poison but after last night with Rose, Joe, Kyd, and Slade, she needed it. Glancing at the time she saw that it was almost time for lunch, cursing the existence of family, people, and general morning issues she stumbled into the shower. Once cleaned a bit, she twisted her hair up into a large bun pinned to her head with two heirloom hairpins. Her outfit was her Wright jersey, and jeans before texting her ex-husband she was ready for lunch with him while she sipped her coffee and walked out of LUX. Luci and Maze were not awake yet, so she didn’t have to deal with their interrogation; yet.
Jason texted that he’d be there in fifteen.
She just hummed to herself and sipped her coffee; wishing for the millionth time it was November or October so she could have pumpkin spice flavoring. But alas, it was February and not the time of year for pumpkin flavoring.
Jason pulled up in a black Audi, she got in before he could get the door for her and she sunk into the warm seat. Though she had a leather jacket, and didn’t get cold, she would admit she was exhausted.
“You look like death warmed over,” he remarked which had her glaring at him.
“Do you realize what a pain in the ass, not one, but three bridezillas are!?” she demanded. “I was up until three in the morning just trying to diffuse the flower crisis between Dad, Kyd and Joe! Then Alice calls me at eleven in the morning wanting to know if I’ll be home for Passover.”
“Really?”
“Wherever we’re going better have copious amounts of coffee because after lunch I have to go deal with the tailor.”
“Then I’ll take us someplace else,” he promised. “No Thai.”
“I want this wedding over with!” she whined.
“Could be a shotgun wedding they don’t remember,” he chuckled.
“That’s not going to happen,” she sighed regretfully. She was insanely happy for Joe and Kyd; especially because Joe had been so nervous about coming out as Pansexual, but Slade, Rose, Grant, and her had been prepared to be nothing but supportive; she still had the Pride banners shoved in her closet from the parade she did with Joe and Kyd last year. Though she was miffed at a lesbian trying to get into her pants; that had gotten ugly.
“Well, not everyone can be as fortunate as us,” he teased.
“Everyone else remembers their wedding,” she pointed out. “Also, if my family found out I got married but didn’t have a huge, traditional Jewish wedding, I think they’d perish!”
“You’re Jewish?”
“I love bacon,” she deadpanned.
He laughed. She forgotten how beautiful his laugh was; it wasn’t fair that he got to show up and remind her how beautiful and amazing he was. And it wasn’t fair that she couldn’t have him, Donna Troy was dating him again according to the tabloids; and she hated the Princess for it. But Jason deserved the best, and that was not her.
“Yes, my family is Jewish, my grandfather survived Dachau, his family was set to Auschwitz,” Raven answered.
“Damn, I didn’t know,” he said softly, his hand caught hers and his thumb gently rubbed her knuckles. “My mom was Irish Catholic,” he informed her.
“I bet our wedding would’ve been a riot then,” she decided with a soft laugh.
“Probably,” he chuckled. She withdrew her hand and wrapped it around her warm travel mug. “So the wedding, I didn’t know you had a brother.”
“I have two step brothers, and a step sister,” she answered honestly. “I have an adopted brother, too.”
He nodded as he drove them onto the freeway and started heading north.
“So how’ve you been Jason?”
“Fine, been nonstop work since New Zealand, I’m taking over the West Coast branch, Tim’s taking over the East Coast,” he answered. “I also have some international business I take care of.”
“That’s great.”
“I am just thankful to be moving away from my family finally,” he chuckled.
“You adore them and you know it.”
“That’s not the point, they’re overwhelming, other than Cat and Alfred.”
“Cat and Alfred?”
“Sorry, Selina is B’s second wife, and we call her Cat because she loves cats, and Alfred is kind of our grandfather.”
“Cool.”
“How about you?”
“Well, I move a lot, Garth and I still work together, with my brother Victor,” she answered. “My family gripes a lot that I’m not around enough because we travel all the time, but they get it. They’re supportive, even if that means a lot of Facetime calls.”
“That’s great,” he smiled; she saw it was a genuine smile which had her shyly returning it.
“So what about you? Anyone special?” she asked.
“Special?”
“Dating! I see the tabloids Jay,” she chuckled. “So you and Donna are you rebounding to serious again?” she questioned. She hated asking, mainly cause she still wanted to claw Donna’s eyes out, but the woman was a Princess, she was more than worthy for Jason Todd.
Raven didn’t notice his knuckles whitening on the wheel as they both stared at the road.
“No,” he answered softly. “I will never get serious with Donna again. We’re… we’re just trying to be friends, and it’s not easy,” he admitted.
“Being friends with exes is never easy,” Raven assured him.
“What about you?”
“Me?”
“You know, dating,” he chuckled.
She grimaced remembering her few failed attempts at dating. “No, not really. The last guy I dated had asked me out to make my sister jealous; it worked, they’ve been together for two years. And there’ve been a few dates, here and there, but no sparks or attraction,” she shrugged.
She didn’t notice him relax a little.
“Shame,” he decided neutrally.
“You know what I miss, and I blame you entirely for it,” she asked.
“What?”
“Sex,” she blurted out. He roared with laughter as they sped down the freeway.
“Really!?”
“Before you I had never had sex, because of you I have impossibly high standards for sex that no one will ever be able to meet!” she whined.
“I can solve that,” he offered.
“Maybe,” she shrugged dismissively; it’d never happen. Not with him. He was a galaxy away from her league.
“I missed you Rae,” he chuckled.
“Same,” she admitted with a smile. “So where are we going?”
“A place with sandwiches and coffee,” he promised.
“Oh Thank God,” she moaned. “Sorry, I haven’t eaten since yesterday afternoon, and I didn’t get a great nights sleep.”
“No need to explain Rae,” he promised.
“Well, it’s just…” she sighed as she rubbed her brow. This wasn’t about coffee and sandwiches with her ex-husband. “This isn’t just about having lunch with you Jason.”
“I kind of figured.”
“You did?” her head snapped over to study his relaxed profile.
“It’s not just lunch for me either Rae,” he said and looked over at her with a serious, guarded expression.
“I’m sorry,” she murmured. “For… for everything,” she sighed.
“No,” he said so harshly and firmly she just stared dumbly at him.
“What?”
“You have no reason to be sorry, for any of this,” he said. “You tried to do the right thing, I’m sorry I didn’t come after you five years ago so we could talk, a real talk, about this.”
“I…”
“No, let me say this because you talked last night and I need to say this.”
“Okay.”
“You met me after Donna had left me at the altar and ran off with my best friend, and brother in arms. And you helped me through a truly terrible, humiliating point in my life, and I never thanked you for that. You didn’t push or pry or try to make me feel things I didn’t, or were expect to. You were there, you were my friend, my wife, and I’m sorry I didn’t make you feel valued enough or safe enough to come to me for help when you needed it. I’m sorry you felt the need to run off on your own rather than come to me. And I’m sorry you saw Donna kiss me, and I’m sorry.”
“It’s alright, Jason, it was a vacation mistake,” she shrugged.
“No, it’s not alright, Raven,” he said it firmly. “Donna was the mistake. You were not.”
“She’s the Princess of Greece, Jason, I’m… me, I’m the mistake,” she said confidently. She knew she was the mistake here, no way in a million years he’d have even stuck with her once they got back to reality, and she went trapezing off with Garth and Vic to study the ocean he’d realize what a terrible mistake they were.
“Rae,” he spoke softly and she glanced back at him. “You are the best damn thing that has ever happened to me. And we’re here.”
“I dibs the tuna sandwich,” she warned him as they got out of the car. He got the door for her, she nodded as she passed. He got them a table, it was only after the starstruck waitress left that he turned his attention back on her.
“Tuna is all mine,” he decided.
“That’s declaring war,” she warned.
“Perhaps,” he shrugged.
“How about we split two sandwiches, I’ll give you half my tuna for the crabcake!”
“Deal!”
“Excellent,” she chuckled. “And Jason, just so you know, you don’t have to lie to make me feel better about us.”
“I’m not lying,” he said.
“Sure you’re not.” She snorted and smiled as she put the menu aside and sipped her coffee. She still wanted pumpkin spice, she cursed autumn for being so far away.
“Rae, you and I, it was the best damn thing to happen to me,” he stated it firmly.
“You are surprisingly happy about us for an ex-husband, are you all this way or just you exclusively?”
“Well, it’s not an ex-husband thing, because that’s kind of what we’re here to talk about,” he said.
“How is it not an ex-husband thing?”
“Kind of like how this isn’t an ex-wife meeting,” he answered. “I never signed the papers Raven.”
She felt all the blood drain from her face as the waitress came over to take their order. He placed the order and waited for her to respond.
“You… you what!?” she sputtered dumbly.
“Never signed them, Rae,” he answered. “So technically, we’re husband and wife.”
“But… but…” she stammered dumbly not knowing what to say to that. “I… WHY!?” she hissed.
“Because,” he answered.
“That’s not a reason to stay married to a person Jason! Especially when I’ve tried dating other people!” she hissed. She was so going to Hell for adultery now.
“No, you didn’t know,” he answered. “But I couldn’t sign them or file them.”
“You should! You should right now!” she insisted.
“No,” he repeated calmly.
“Jason!” she hissed.
“Raven.”
“This is SERIOUS! If you don’t sign those papers, and people find out that… and… we’ll, the media will crucify you! And your family will join them!” she hissed.
“Let them,” he shrugged. “I was serious Rae.”
“I don’t even remember us getting married!”
“Neither do I, but nonetheless, we are,” he said levelly.
She groaned as she hid her face in her hands and wanted to tear her hair out of her head in frustration now.
“Rae, love, look at me,” he pleaded. She glared at him through the fringes of hair now cascading around her face. Oh she was pissed, the hardest thing she had ever had to do, even harder than saying goodbye to her mother or watching her family fall apart because of her biological father, was saying goodbye to the man she had married. And worse, she had known it was the right thing to do. Drunken mistakes should not be consequences for life, and she had been able to fix theirs with a simple divorce!
“I’m… I fixed our mistake! I did everything to fix it!” she snapped.
“I couldn’t sign the papers because I never could view it as a mistake,” he answered levelly. “And if you’re willing, I would like to try again.”
“Oh no,” she gasped. She could feel her chest tightening in panic, as her heart slammed in her ribs. “No. I… No, I can’t do this, no.”
“Why not?”
“Because I’m a mistake Jason!” she snapped. “I’m a mistake and this marriage between us, only happened because we were drunk off our asses and, on a boat, somehow; and I still don’t know how we got on the boat because the last thing I remember is the pub! Also, you’re… you were, are, engaged to a Princess, how the hell can I compete with that! You’re American Royalty, Jason! Your Dad is the richest man in the world, and I… I’m me!” she sputtered.
“You loved me when you thought I was just Jason Todd, mechanic,” he pointed out.
“This isn’t about the money Jason,” she sighed.
“Then what’s it about?”
“You deserve better than me,” she stated.
“I think it’s the other way around love,” he said softly. “The day you left, the day Donna came to take me home, I was coming home to you, to talk to you about us getting a flat, and seeing where you wanted to go from New Zealand. If Donna hadn’t intercepted me, I’d have come back with you, immediately, no questions asked, no expectations. You’re my wife Raven.”
“Doesn’t mean we should be together!” she snapped.
“I think you and I got married for a reason, drunk or not, and I think we should give this a real shot,” he said firmly.
“Jason…”
“I would have called you five years ago if I wasn’t so damn scared, or hurt, and I would’ve come for you immediately, always regretted that I didn’t. So please, please, I’ll do anything for a second shot with you,” he said softly.
“Jason, sign the papers,” she pleaded. “You’ll… you deserve to be happy; I don’t make people happy.”
“How about, we date, try dating, and if it doesn’t work out, I’ll sign the papers,” he bartered.
Raven stared at him; she didn’t know what to make of that.
“A date?”
“Can’t a man ask his wife on a date?”
“I…”
“We didn’t do the whole dating thing the first time around, and I would like to remedee that this time,” he said levelly.
“We skipped straight to the marriage, and wild sex,” she muttered as they were served. They both waited for the waitress to leaven before she automatically swiped half his sandwich and he took half of hers.
“I missed the sex too,” he chuckled. “You broke my standards, no one else compares.”
“Oh Thank God That’s Ruined For You Too,” she laughed as she took a bite of her tuna sandwich.
“You ruined many things Rae, like tea, I still can’t figure out how you made that one tea to make me sleep, but I can’t remake it for the life of me. I’ve almost cried craving it,” he chuckled.
“You ruined waffles for me,” she warned. “I mean no one can make them right, I cried on my kitchen floor one morning I wanted them so badly. The chocolate chip ones with strawberries,” she moaned at the mere memory.
“Good book conversations,” he stated. “I joined a book club I was so desperate to talk books, intelligently, turns out that was mostly a gossip group; all four of the ones I joined.”
“Ha!” she stuck her tongue out at him for that, he had told them to join a book club when they had first married and enjoyed talking books. “I told you they weren’t what you thought!”
“Some of them must be actual book clubs but I haven’t found one.”
“Could be because you’re Jason Todd.”
“Very possible.”
“But we don’t have to be married to do things like that, I can give you the tea recipe and we can be friends who talk books,” she offered.
“Rae, it’s not just about that,” he chuckled.
“Sure it is, I’ll be your friend, but I don’t think I should be your wife,” she said firmly.
“Little bird, I’m not divorcing you, besides you need to keep the insurance,” he said firmly.
“About that, I should pay you back.”
“Don’t you dare,” he warned lowly. She stared at his fierce, guarded expression. “And don’t even think about changing me from your emergency contact!”
~~~*~*~*~~~
He didn’t want her to pay him back for taking care of her, she would never understand how much she had taken care of him. And when she brought it up it reminded him how neatly she had erased herself from his life, how she had promised to remove him as her emergency contact. That had actually been a fight between them when they were barely friends. A bar fight landed him in the hospital, and he had to call someone, apparently, they were going to call his grandfather when he convinced them to call the girl he had hooked up with the night before, Raven. Raven had been shocked but had come to help him get discharged, and the ensuing arguments had led to them agreeing to be each other’s emergency contact while they were in New Zealand. The wedding had happened after that by about a week.
“I…”
“You terrified me, Rae,” he stated. “I came back to the hotel room and everything of you was gone, including our photos. You just… you erased yourself from my life, and I swear I couldn’t take it if you removed me as your emergency contact. I’m your husband, I deserve to know if you’re in trouble.”
“Ex-husband.”
“I haven’t signed the papers, and they’re safely hidden away so you can’t make me,” he pointed out. He felt a bit smug about that statement as she glared at him.
“I signed them!”
“I know, and it still terrifies me that you could do it so easily,” he stated. He saw her flinch, and he knew. Just one look at her and he knew, that it hadn’t been easy for her. None of this was easy, but he got the sense that this was also his fault for waiting five years. He hadn’t lost her yet, but he got a feeling that he was precariously close to if he wasn’t careful. There was very little about her, what made her make her decisions, that he actually knew and if he wasn’t careful he knew he could lose her. She already seemed to hold a low opinion of her value, and she seemed skittish about having someone in her life who wasn’t family. Though the skittish aspect of her was always there, if he moved to quickly, or raised his voice a certain amount she’d jump, she’d flinch, and he remembered her nightmares, though very few, were very intense. Something had happened to her, before he had met her, something that made her skittish; made her this way, and he should’ve chased her five years ago to not let it manifest further, but he hadn’t. Things to add to his list of regrets.
“I did what I thought was best, for us, as people in a situation we didn’t sign up for.”
“I have a marriage certificate that says we did sign up for this.”
“Jason, I… I’m not the best person for someone like you,” she started.
“I think you’re the best person I’ve ever met, Raven.”
“Jason…” she sighed as she dragged her hand through her hair.
“Can you please just consider giving us a shot, a real shot?” he asked.
“I…”
“I would like to take you, not my guilt stricken wife, out,” he reiterated it. “I would like to take you out.”
“Like a hit or a date?”
“I’ll leave that to be a surprise.”
“I don’t like surprises,” she muttered.
“Well, then we’re a hell of a surprise,” he mused. “Please Rae. I would like to take my beautiful, estranged wife out on a date, have fun, and no expectations.”
“I gave you the divorce papers so we wouldn’t have expectations.”
“You gave us an out, and I’m not out yet,” he said levelly.
“Fine,” she threw up her hands in defeat. “I’ll go on a date with my idiotic ex-husband.”
He smiled in triumph and stole one of her fries.
“HEY! Hands off!” she snapped as she snatched her fry basket up.
“We’re married, we’re supposed to share.”
“Only until you sign those damn papers!”
“Never,” he chuckled. “So when are you free from family and wedding obligations?”
“You are not going to my brother’s wedding, just so we’re clear about this. You are not going,” she stated that firmly. There was a bit of hurt in his heart that she wasn’t even going to offer it as an option, but he was sure that in time he’d win her over. Doing so at her brother’s wedding was likely too much pressure, and would require them explaining that they were married; which he didn’t know if her family would take that well. Going off Lucifer’s reaction he would bet they didn’t even know.
“That’s fine,” he nodded.
“I’m free after the wedding. The wedding is February fourteenth,” she sighed.
“So can I take you for dinner on February fifteenth?” he asked levelly.
“Fine,” she nodded. “But I’m leaving with Garth and Dolphin on the twentieth, we’re meeting up with Vic on a job.”
“Where’s the job?”
“We’re going back to Hawaii to research reefs. Garth’s family is there and they want to be close to his family,” she shrugged.
“I thought he studied whales.”
“Well, he’s a marine biologist, there’s a solid job for him in Hawaii, same for me, and Vic’s already there, so we’re going there. Dolphin also…” she clamped her mouth shut then.
“Also what?”
“She’s pregnant, she wants to be close to his family, but I’m not supposed to tell anyone that!” she muttered.
“Congratulations to Dolphin and Garth.”
“They’re excited, I’m telling my family I’m leaving after the wedding,” she said.
He nodded, he was already trying to calculate if he could afford to head of to Hawaii for a bit to continue wooing his reluctant wife.
“I’m still going to call and text you,” he informed her.
“You don’t have to.”
“We’re friends, it’s about time we act it. And we’re husband and wife.”
“Fine.” She rolled her eyes, and he smiled; this was going to take a lot of work. That was fine by him though.

INTRODUCING,
NAME: Tess Bryant.
AGE: Thirty.
GENDER/PRONOUNS: Cis female, she/her.
ORIGINALLY FROM: Devinstone, MA.
OCCUPATION: Detective.
CURRENT RESIDENCE: Braeswood.
"The past is just a story we tell ourselves."
BIOGRAPHY,
Trigger warnings/content warnings: kidnapping, depression, addiction
A strong woman is one who doesn’t rely on anyone, but has a past no one would wish to relive. At the innocent age of eight, Tess Bryant lost everything that mattered to her, everything that she held dear to her heart and everything that she loved. It was all taken away from her by a man she trusted, a man she considered to be her own flesh and blood, a man she use to call Uncle.
It was the summer of 1997, and Devinstone was scorching hot with it’s first triple digits in over fifteen years. Tess and her little sister (by only two minutes) Hannah were lounging around with their jeans rolled up to their knees, while their feet dangled from the dock at Monroe Lake and soaked in the cool night water. They had just come from the little carnival Devinstone held every year for the Fourth of July, it was the towns biggest event, besides their Christmas festival that is. The sisters shared cotton candy and talked about their current crushes, which always happened to be the same boy.
They laughed and joked, shared secrets and future goals. But, as the sun began to set their brother yelled for them from inside their home, which Hannah of course ignored. Grabbing her shoes, Tess stood from the dock, nudging Hannah on her way up, as a way of letting her know to hurry. Instead Hannah had other plans - to grab some ice cream back at the carnival. But Tess knew her sister, and knew she was just going to meet Billy behind the bleachers at their high school, “their favorite spot”, Hannah had once said. Parting ways, Tess walked the short distance inside their home, while Hannah snuck out the side gate.
Later that night, Tess fell asleep listening to Radiohead while reading her favorite chapter book, unable to stay awake to wait for Hannah. With the sound of their bedroom phone line ringing, Tess awoke and answered quickly. To her surprise it was Billy, asking for Hannah. Confused, Tess asked if he had seen her that night, which he had quickly responded, “No”. Worried, Tess hung up, and marched to her brothers room, swung the door open without knocking and told him everything. Immediately, they grabbed their flashlights and went out looking for their sister, not daring to wake their mother or father. But they couldn’t find her. They walked back home, leaving their muddy boots by the door. The next morning they told their parents. Without hesitation, they called the authorities, whom showed up just minutes later. They took all the information, including a photo of their daughter. They couldn’t find evidence, no trace of fourteen year old Hannah Bryant. The town came together to search for her and held night vigils for the young girl. But when eight years passed, and her flyers became faded, everyone had forgotten about little Hannah Bryant.
With years and years gone, and at twenty-one years old, Tess finished her schooling and began working as a 911 operator ( a job she felt appropriate for her after the disappearance of her sister). Because of her connections within the department, and with advanced technology, she convinced her colleagues to re-open her sister’s case.
They agreed, but with some hesitation, since the only suspect they had encountered was Hannah’s old boyfriend, who had now a small family of his own. They began working day and night, sifting through old cold case boxes, which had included Hannah’s old diary, a piece of evidence that had been overlooked. She talked highly of their Uncle Frank, a family friend who wasn’t technically their uncle, but a good friend of their father’s. With questioning underway, they caught lead, after lead, after lead, and eventually cornered in on their favorite Uncle Frank. It was a step in the case that had taken Tess through a whirlwind of emotions and eventually depression. She couldn’t muster up the courage to attend the court hearing, where they charged her uncle with life in prison, after finding her sister’s body buried in his backyard - the same backyard she had visited many times after her sister’s disappearance. She took an eight year leave from the department, unable to muster up the courage to continue.
The guilt of knowing she could have helped her sister, saved her even, tortured her beyond repair. She quickly turned to prescription medication and alcohol, as a way to ease the pain and turn off her many thoughts and nightmares.
With her sister in mind, Tess attended an AA meeting one night, out of the blue. She knew that it wasn’t the life she was meant to live and knew that if Hannah were to have seen her, she’d be highly disappointing. Ever since that one meeting, Tess continued to go, until she felt no need for her alcohol or her medication. She began putting her thoughts to paper and eventually published a book called, “Losing my Other Half”, a book that eventually landed on the New York’s Best Seller’s list for a few months. Instead of continuing her job as a dispatcher, she pushed her body to the limit, through exercise and intense training to become a part of the police department as a detective. Because of her past, she felt a need to serve her small town and give back to the community.

🔹The Code Blue Caper
- Notes: |Heist music: “Americano” Lady Gaga|
So, sometimes bad things happen...
This is supposed to be a regular run of the mill caper. Get the thing and get out. Though over the months Chief has been increasingly suspicious of the high rate of success of international authorities and her agents. And Julia. Chief lays a trap. A really good trap. A trap that looks nothing like trap. A trap trap. And Team Red walks right into it. Player set up GPS’ on all ACME key cards, he knows where all ACME agents are. But it’s been quiet. Same old, same old.
Player notices a blue icon moving torward Carmen’s location... “Why and how would there be another ACME agent other than Devenuix tailing Carmen...?” He thinks.
Player: “Julia, I thought you said Devineaux wasn’t in Spain..?”
Julia: “He’s not.” As she looks right behind her to see Devineaux reading a news paper, outside a London coffee shop.
Suddenly the two make the realization....
Julia: “ ..... oh no. Bad, bad, bad. Carmen get out of there right-“
Chief: “Hello, Ms. Sandiego. I’ve waited a long time to finally meet you... No thanks from my agent... Jules! And to the little voice inside your ear, don’t bother. We’ve jammed the GPS.”
Player and Julia are listening to the entire thing, Julia cringes when Chief calls her out. And Player looks appalled. And then, just like that everyone falls off the radar.
Carmen is surrounded. There’s no where to disappear to. Player calls in the cavalry. Zach and Ivy are having lunch a downtown cafe in Madrid.
Ivy: “Hey, what’s up-?
Player: “IVY ZACH ACME HAS CARMEN-!!!
Ivy: “ Whoa, Whoa whoa.. what’s going on?”
Player: “The book was a trap. ACME knows everything. They have Carmen.”
Zach: “.... Shadowsan!”
|Later..|
After Player throughly freaks out.. he’s yelling and Shadowsan has the phone practically an arms length away.
Shadowsan: ”Alright, young man you need to remain calm. We will work through this. What was Carmen’s last known location?”
Player: “ ... uh, right. I lost the GPS signal at 543 Calle Viella. The Valdezarez district.”
|Back in London...|
Julia: “I have to go.”
Chase: “Go? Where?”
Julia: “Madrid.”
Chase:”Hold on a second, Ms. Argent. What ever for?” He steps in front of her.
Julia: “Chief got Carmen!....Sandiego.” She’s super panicked and frazzled right now. And she’s not thinking rationally. Never when Carmen is concerned.
Chase: “.... what... why this is incredible! I resent the fact that it was not me who made the capture, but still.” And Julia is rolling her eyes and she storms away.
|Back at a ACME hideout|
Carmen is in super high tech cuffs, behind 5 inch thick glass. there are agents everywhere.
Agent Ross: “Should we send transport for Ms. Argent, Chief?”
Chief: “No. She’ll be here.” Chief says while having a stare down with Carmen through the glass.
|Probably Cut back to Shadowsan/Zach/Ivy/Player here.|
|Scene where Julia and Chase show up|
Julia: “What are you planning to do with her, Chief?” Julia questions, as she watches Chief comb through Carmen’s coat.
Chief: “My, it’s like a candy store in here.” She mumbles to herself before answering Julia.
Chief: “Ms. Argent, if you want to catch a fish, you gotta throw the worm.” She says all too smugly.
And Julia is now more freaked out.
Chief: “Agent Ross, please escort Ms. Argent to a holding cell. She’s too much of a wild card to be trusted now.” The agent is taking Julia away, and Carmen is like “WTF”
Carmen: “Wha- HEY!” An agent shoves her back in the chair she’s in.
|2 Hours Later...|
{Chief isn’t getting Carmen to talk, meanwhile she’s having her agents construct the scene where they’re going bait V.I.L.E.
Chief gets frustrated and walks off,Carmen just gives her a stern glance when she walk away. She’s going to try to get Julia to talk next.}
Chief: “Hello, Ms. Argent. And, just to ease your mind, no. I haven’t baited V.I.L.E, for the time being. I was trying to talk to her, get her to see reason.... what a stubborn girl. You and her team had quite the run-around on everyone, though.... New Zeland... Hong Kong... Stockholm... Bangkok...Rome.... Gondar..... New York.... Iceland....Berlin.”
Chief starts dropping fours years worth of case files on the ground in front of her. Four years worth of capers, of Julia’s life. Each file, a brick dropping on her glass heart. And with each brick, Julia’s anger grew, but what shattered the glass was the mention of Berlin. No one touches Berlin.
Chief: “Though law enforcement ran into dead ends on all of them. Inconclusive. Y’all were just that slick, huh?” Chief offers a halfhearted chuckle.
Stonewall Jules remains.
Chief: “Love is a foolish thing, Julia. Think about the rest of your life. Your career.”
Silence.
Chief: “Still ‘No’? Fine. I can play games, too.”
Chief gets up to leave, and Julia goes from angry, to speculative, to worried in the matter of seconds. “What did she mean “games”? Carmen.” She thinks.
And what’s killing Carmen and Julia, is they don’t know what’s going on with the other.
| Later Later...|
After her meeting with Chief, Julia is berating herself over everything that happened,”how did she know?? When?” then she hears the door swish open. It is none other than Chase Devineaux, drifting in the room with a somber face. He’s trying to comprehend what’s going on, how the situation ended up where it is. He casts a glance to Julia, who just looks away.
Chase: “Just tell me one thing, Julia... is she worth it?”
Julia: “Yes.”
Chase simply nods and accepts this and comes to terms with what he’s about to do.
Chase swiftly swipes a key card over the lock. Julia is stunned.
Chase: “Come on, Argent. We have to get out of this insane asylum.” She smiles and then the two start off running down the hallways.
Julia: “How did you get a key?”
Chase: “Why, I stole it!” He just looks so damn proud of himself, and Julia just chuckles.
|Later Later Later.....|
Everyone has made their escapes. Carmen has to crawl through the air ducts.. Ever since Carmen got to ACME, comms and GPS have been cut off. Then they suddenly, “beep”
Player: “Carmen! Oh my gosh. What happen? Are you okay? And... are you in an air duct?” The clanging of aluminum clearly being heard.
Carmen: “Yes,.. I’m in an air duct. It was the only way around the big brothers. I need to find Jules and get the heck out of here. I heard Chief say something about a cell..”
Player: “I’m still working on breaking in. The security ACME has is insane.”
Carmen: “Yeah, tell me about it.” She mumbles. Carmen finally finds the holding area. But, upon exiting the air duct.....
Carmen: “What?! Where did they take her?!” Carmen is now off frantically sprinting down hallways.
Carmen is running through the hallways, looking for Julia, And then the trio almost run past each other...
Carmen: “Jules!”
Julia lets out a sigh of relief.
Carmen: “Are you hurt?”
Julia: “No, I’m fine. Are you alright?”
Carmen:”Yeah, I’m good.”
And then they have a quick hug and Devenuix is all like 😐.
Chase: “I don’t know what’s going on, but I feel like I’m intruding.”
Carmen: “Okay, we gotta go. Player’s pretty much blind right now, so we’re on our own.
So they get through the building,
Player: “Make it through the security door, and Alicanto is outside waiting for you.”
Carmen: “Player, you rock.”
And this entire time, Chase is just having aneurysm after aneurysm. Upon seeing Alicanto, his brain is ready to crash.
Carmen: ”Gawk later, Devineaux. Just run. Run, run, run!”
And the three make it to the plane,
Carmen: ”Okay, Zach-..?
But Zach isn’t in the pilot’s seat...
Carmen: “Player?!
Player: “In the flesh.” And as quickly as she landed, Alicanto is off again.
Carmen: “You learned to fly her.” Carmen’s smile grows at the thought.
Player: “Yeah, I thought it would be a good idea to broaden my skill set. So, uh.. now where to..?” He questions, motioning back to Devineaux, who is gawking about the cabin.
Carmen: “Mission Control.”
Player: “Even with-?”
Carmen: “Mission Control. It’s the safest place right now.”
Player: “Okaaay.”
|~Chase Devineaux, Welcome to Mission Control~
| So a short flight later, the four are back at Mission Control. Chase is still gawking and trying to retain his sanity. Carmen, Julia, and Player sprint out of the plane, straight to the computer. Player and Jules crashing right into the chairs. Carmen is crouching between the both of them.
Julia: “Have you broken through their firewalls yet?”
Player: “Still working on it. Chief was pretty particular about her security. Did you get the drive, Red?”
Carmen: “Yep.” She places the drive in front of Player. A drive detailing building schematics, security protocols, tech specs,...
Julia: “...When did you have time to get that?”
Carmen: “When I was running around looking for you.”
And Chase is over here, listening to this conversation.. still 😶. He shakes his head,
Chase: “I still don’t understand-“
Ivy: “Chase, my man! Take a seat.” Ivy motions for him to take a seat across from her at the gadget work table. She’s repairing broken equipment. And she’s going to explain to him, slowly, what’s going on.
Cause the three at the computer were about ready to throw him in the koi pond.
Chase is slowly and skeptically walking over to Ivy, squinting because “I’ve seen this girl before..”
Chase: “...You!”
Ivy: “Yeah, coats are still warm.” She says with a hint of mirth, shooting him a quick glance. Then continues with her tinkering.
Ivy: “Okay, so I know you’re really confused, Chase-“
Then suddenly they hear a “thunk! Ow!” Zach is under the car, making repairs from a car pursuit that we would have seen a couple episodes ago.
Zach: “What?! Don’t tell me Inspector Cheese Feet is-“
Zach walks over to the two, covered in grease and oil. Devineaux gives a sad little wave. And Ivy just has this “yep.” look. Zach just rolls his eyes in annoyance “whatever.” And goes back to the car.
Chase is looking at Ivy with confusion and desperation,
Ivy: “Go on, ask your questions. I know ya got truck full.” He hesitates.. then the flood gates open.
Chase: “Why is ACME trying to kill us? What is this place? Who are you three and how-why are you helping Carmen Sandiego?!”
Ivy: “This is our home. And because she’s a good person, Devineaux. All those thefts, disappearances, saving YOUR kidnapped butt from V.I.L.E, and what could have been disasters.. that was her. Well, we helped. But the point being, you went around all that time and never asked yourself if she was anything other than a grandiose thief?”
Chase has his head down in shame, also in thought. Looking up as Ivy beings to speak again,
Ivy: “Carmen got us out of a really bad place. Me and my brother. Mom and Pops weren’t there. Never were. We were just a couple of punk kids tryin’ to make a quick buck. Survive. Then one night, scares us half to death while we were staking out a crappy donut joint to knock over, and she’s says “I’ve got work for you. Real work. Against some real bad people.” Devineaux shooting a quick glance to a green & black tracker disassembled on the table.
“And to get that second chance to start over... after society was ready to throw us in garbage ...!” Ivy’s voice raises as she is saying that last part and then breaks slightly and she tears up a little.
Zach is listening to this conversation from under the car, then walks over to Ivy, places a supportive hand on her shoulder as she roughly wipes a tear from her eye and continues to vigorously work.
Zach: “Carmen is the sister we always needed. We’re not about to let anything happen to her.” He says to Chase, looking him straight in the eyes. Translation: “I will throw you in the trunk of this car and drive it off a cliff if you pull any tricks to hurt her.”
Ivy: “Now V.I.L.E, those bad people, SO real.
Ivy slides a tablet over, detailing the VILE operatives they’ve managed to get arrested and decommissioned over the last few years.
“We keep wrecking them, but the terf they own, the people they own.. they’re a gargantuan killer whale. ....And now, this ACME..... I don’t even know-!”
Ivy throws her tools and what she’s doing and goes over the the three at the computer.
Chase: “Well, wait what about-?
Ivy: “BRO!”
Ivy: “Okay, guys what are we doing with ACME?” Ivy walks over puts her hand on Carmen’s shoulder, puts her forehead on Carmen’s head. Carmen tenderly looks up, puts her hand over Ivy’s and kinda does a lean-in hug. Silently saying “It’s okay.”
Player, Julia, and Carmen are working furiously trying to break into ACME’s inner security system.... when
Player: “Eureka!”
Julia: “You got in?!”
Player: “Just say “open sesame.”
Carmen: “We’re gonna shut that shady place down.” Carmen has this cat&canary look, determined eyes set on the schematics on the screen.
|During their moment of confrontation:
Player: “Better beef up your security, Chief. I got in. Hahaha!” Player hacked ACME’s speaker system, every ACME agent in the HQ can hear him.
Chief: “Wonderful. Now we’re dealing with children. Shut the system down! Everything off line, Now!” Player can hear Chief yelling to her people. And the line goes silent, GPS goes off line, but Player has a screenshot of their location.
Player: “...There ya go, Chief. Run.”
| Player is growing this sense of “Who’s laughing now?” As he coldly deals out his revenge on ACME... Julia aiding and abetting, they were watching her and Carmen in Berlin.
|Father, Daughter Talk|
Shadowsan And Carmen reunite shortly after Player broke through ACME’s security.
Carmen: “Shadowsan!” Carmen runs up to him, and he just breaths a heartfelt sigh of relief. They immediately wrap in a hug.
Shadowsan: “Oh my goodness. I’m so glad your alright.”
Carmen: “What about you?” He just scuffs dismissively.
“These ACME people, this “Chief”... have completely lost their marbles. We gotta shut them down, but I don’t know how...
Shadowsan: “Whatever you decide, just remember, stand by what you believe is right, in your heart. Remember who you are, and who you strive to be.”
Carmen: “Carmen Sandiego.” They both share a warm smile and hug. They got this.
||The Rig||
Player is currently hacking into ACME’s tech, there’s an option to shut down all ACME vehicles, transportation... doesn’t matter if they’re in the middle of the highway, in the middle of nowhere, under water.... Player is about ready to activate, he shoots a quick glance to Julia for approval. She’s the better judgement of the two, after all.
Julia: “Do it.”
Julia saying this with cold, contempt indifference.
And everything gets shut down. ACME can’t move.
Carmen comes back to the two at the computer, a new sense of purpose and renewed faith in herself and the Team. But things aren’t okay at The Rig.
Carmen: “... what are you guys doing?”, concern lacing her voice.
Player: “Divine intervention. ACME is in our sandbox now, they're immobile.” Not taking his concentration away from the screen.
Carmen, now turning her attention to Julia, who is just as equally concentrated.
Carmen: “Hey, I was gone for ten minutes, what happened?” Carmen pulls Julia off to the side, voice soft and concerned.
Julia hesitates, then pulls out a folded picture and hands it to Carmen. It was them on the rooftop in Berlin. Their soft and together, private moment. And there were other pictures in the frame. Them walking down the street, sitting in front of a cafe...
Now, Carmen understands.
Carmen: “.... oh.” So softly you can barely hear. And then Carmen pulls her close, offering silent comfort. Whispering apologizes and how everything’s was going to be alright against her temple.
They go back to the computer, where Player is bound to do something else questionable.
Carmen kneels down beside him.
Carmen: “Hey.”
Player: “Hi.”
Carmen: “Player, you gotta stop. We have to be better, we are better than them. Better than VILE and ACME combined. No one is going to tear this family apart, okay?” Player kinda breaks down a little, mostly the stress and lack of sleep wearing on him, he and Carmen have a solid, secure hug.
Carmen: “Aw, this is a ‘thick as thieves’ hug.”
Player: “Ha. Always, Red.”
|Later in the Mission Room...|
And all these poor people on Team Red are so sleep deprived, they haven’t had a solid nights sleep in at least a week.
Chase: “What have you people been living off of?”
Carmen: “Adrenaline.”
Player: “Fear.”
Julia: “Coffee. Very, very black coffee.”
Zach: “I’ve elected just live the rest of my life as a zombie. Seems cool.”
Ivy: “Do I look tired to you?”
Chase: “Ah-no.”
Everyone is attentively work on their parts to this “take down ACME plan” Chase looks around to everyone,
Chase: “Is..there anything I can do to help?”
Carmen: “Um-“
Zach: “As long as he’s not driving my car.”
Everyone chuckles, and Carmen coughs her’s to a halt.
Carmen: “Guys, that’s enough.”
Chase, now guilt ridden to the bone for demonizing Carmen,
Chase: “Look, Ms. Sandiego. I- I want to apologize for my actions. It wasn’t fair for me to assume you had nefarious motives.. when I didn’t have all the facts..” Now when he’s talking about facts, he talking straight to Julia, who has a sympathetic smile on her face. Carmen is still looking over at him, with a measured patience and admiration.
Carmen: “You were just doing your job, Chase. And you’re dedicated, I’ll give you that. Granted, if you slowed down for half a second and just listened, then you would have found out there was more going on than you understood. Also, Julia is always right. Just- always. Don’t worry, I learned the hard way too.” Julia just bashfully casts her vision away, and Carmen is just wearing a tired smile. After all is said and done, the entirety of Team Red is sitting along a table at Mission Control, nearly all passed out. Expect for Carmen who is staring at Cookie from across the table. Cookie is deciding how to proceed. But noticed the state of the people who haven’t properly slept in 6 days.
Cookie: “Alright, get some rest. All of you.”
Cookie motions for them to their rooms. Some are just out, and others get jolted from sleep from others waking them up. Carmen slowly gets up, then turns back to Cookie, who just motions again “go”. Then Carmen faintly hears,
Cookie: “We have a lot to talk about, Kiato.”
After everyone has their full rest, they all filter in the kitchen, where Cookie and Shadowsan are sitting with tea and biscuits.
Cookie: “I believe you all slept for 14 hours. Good.”
|Later Later Later...
The battle is done. The flames are settling into embers. The matter of who is going to watch ACME comes up.
Team Red is huddled together in Mission Control. Cookie approaches Julia with the master key card for ACME,
Julia: “Wha- I, no..I couldn’t-“
Cookie: “Julia, I have circled this globe countlessly over, and time, if you’ll believe it.
There isn’t anyone else I would trust more with this.”
Chase: “See, I told you that you’d be running ACME one day.”
Julia: “No you didn’t.”
