also side ramble time, it has already been established that misogyny has seeped through the other gangs' treatment of the warriors (I.e. "late night cosmetology class", repeated use of "girls" rather than calling them women, etc.). with that in mind, I find it very interesting and rather culturally relevant of the writers to have the hurricanes, the one and only gang that lets the warriors off the hook, to be a VOGUE-themed gang that explicitly features black queer individuals! It speaks volumes that amidst the animosity of most of the new york gangs, it was a gang with explicit african-american and latino queer culture through the ballroom scene-themes at the forefront that encourages the main diversion of the warriors (2024) from its predecessors: the recontextualization of the warriors fighting back ESPECIALLY NOW THAT THEY ARE WOMEN and that same changed thread leading to changed motivations and actions from ajax, fox, and hell even mercy as they go through the show.
like, it's a very very fucking nice thing to have the cultures and histories of resistance from the POC queer communities of NYC become the fuel for immense character (and thematic) growth in our version of warriors. Truly a song of resilience and solidarity amongst marginalized sectors

When in Rome
Tumblr media
Right, so I write for Mothership RPG, yeah?
It was basically a professional obligation for me to go see Alien: Romulus on its opening weekend.
Tumblr media
Short review: Cool. Though I wish directors would make a new alien horror movie instead of new Alien movies.
Lemme tell ya, I might have designer brain disease, but this movie really is a series of problems for a sci-fi adventure, haha. My favorite thing about this movie was the smart, player-skill level problem solving the characters came up with. I was actually impressed. The film made me want to put my friends through the same ringer, and write up a similar scenario.
So I did.
Tumblr media
When in Rome is a 20pg Mothership RPG adventure module with two player handouts, obviously heavily inspired by Alien: Romulus. I started last weekend, and released it yesterday. (What’s wrong with me, right?). That is: writing, playtesting, Mothership 3pp approval, peer review (thanks Josh Domanski, Christian Sorrell, Iko and Allen Hall!), hiring Brandon Yu “Chaoclypse” for the sick art, revising and putting into layout.
So yeah, this module is basically an adaptation of the film, but it does have some very notable (read: legally distinct) differences.
It's free for the next five hours, and I would love to hear what you think, and how your PCs fare on Caesar/Augustus.
Tumblr media
Click here to download the module on itch.io. Note that I’m still working on the plaintext file and VTT asset updates. I would love to hear what you think, and how your players’ crews fare on Caesar/Augustus.
Good luck.

you are umasou
#I watched it today it was so good#im not big on dinosaur stuff but i like how it was used to approach the predator/prey conversation especially when both sides are sentient#instead of just defaulting to well since predators are meat eaters their actions are automatically immoral so their role in the story#has to match. and then when your characters /are/ meat eaters you just step around that whole topic#heart knows he has to kill and eat so there’s no avoiding it but even he knows he has agency over that#hell he even decided to hunt by himself so umasou doesn’t have to see him kill and eat another dinosaur a day after meeting him#and maybe its because it’s a kids movie but it also doesn’t make a big show over the act of hunting and eating. it doesn’t dwell on it#like yes you can clearly see them ripping into guts minus the graphic details but it doesnt go out of its way to censor it either#its played straight just like hearts mom having more kids like nobody asks who the father is or when that happened cuz it doesn’t matter#what matters is she still loves heart and encourages her kids to greet their big brother and they do!!! it’s sweet#Beckon was also an interesting touch bc they make it clear the only reason he doesnt eat umasou is bc he cant and not that he wouldn’t#but he’s still a funny and interesting character and that doesn’t get in the way of how we see him too much#same for baku he was pretty polite with heart esp from the start when he asks him if hes abandoned implying he would be prepared to#look out for him from the start. and at the end when he decides to spare him. I dont hate him at all hes just intimidating#you are umasou#doodles#I wanted to draw smth more detailed but I couldn’t decide if I wanted to go with the cartoony art style#or smth closer to realistic?? so this is like. some sort of compromise I guess

everyone i see saying "omg oliver really said eat the rich!!!1!111!!!!" are COMPLETELY missing the point of that movie. it was not an "eat the rich movie", it wasn't about class in that sense AT ALL. it was very much about desire and obsession and consumption. not class!!

There’s a universe in which Sonic the hedgehog is a skilled actor with a well-earned reputation for doing all his own stunts. He bit off more than he could chew in a high-risk action movie once and got injured. Sonic insisted the director should hire a good friend of his, Shadow, as his stunt double. They’d been told countless times that they looked alike and, as much as Sonic hated to admit it, Shadow equaled him in boldness and athleticism. Once Shadow showed the director what he was made of and learned to match Sonic’s running style, he was hired.
Shadow wasn’t the only friend of Sonic’s who was on set. Amy Rose, a talented up-and-coming actress, played the main love interest. She and Sonic were amicable exes, so although the love scenes were a little awkward, filming was fun and easy.
Much to the director’s frustration, Amy was just as reckless as Sonic; she’d looked up to him as a young actress and still emulated a lot of his tendencies. On top of that, she had a very distinctive fur color, and she was strong enough to do stunts that her doubles couldn’t. Before long, the director’s blood pressure was through the roof.
The most dangerous scene was in a subway, with cast members fighting inside and on top of moving trains and leaping onto station platforms. The villain’s double had gotten his foot stuck in an emergency exit door on the back of a train car. Amy jumped in to help, but in the process of wrenching it open, she lost her footing and fell onto the tracks. She was an inch away from getting hit by a train when Shadow dove in, pulling her into an indent in the wall with him.
Sonic was close enough to see their faces. By the time Shadow was asking Amy if she was alright, she was smitten.
The scene was reworked, but that wasn’t the only thing that had changed. Sonic knew what Amy looked like when she was in love, and he knew just as well that Shadow needed someone like her in his life.
For the remainder of filming, Sonic sat out for stunts whenever he felt he could get away with it, claiming he just wasn’t feeling up to it yet to make sure the two of them had as much time together as possible. By the time the movie hit theaters, half of the tabloids were circulating a rumor that a certain actress had a new boyfriend.
The other half fell for the body double gimmick and thought she’d gotten back together with her ex.
Sonic’s reputation as a wild man who did all his own stunts took a hit after that, but he felt it was worth it to see his friends happy together.

I don't remember which YouTuber it was that said something about how Tarzan defeating Sabor at the end of basically the first act of Tarzan sucks because Sabor should've been the final boss since they killed his parents, but it ANNOYS me because it reveals how little that person understood the whole damn point of the movie lol.
Like, Tarzan explicitly expresses that he wants to become the perfect gorilla to earn his place in the family, and a whole montage of him training for that follows. Defeating Sabor, where Kerchak couldn't, is essentially there to show that Tarzan has achieved his goal. He's become the gorilla he wanted and he's earned the respect of his family.
He WON.
But then - humans show up. And another opportunity is offered. He finds out he might not actually belong with the gorillas. Maybe he belongs with these "strangers like him". What he thought he knew, what he thought he wanted, is in flux. He's just achieved his goal of becoming the perfect gorilla, and now he doesn't even know if he should be a gorilla anymore.
He spends another montage learning to become human. It's actually interesting how the purpose of those two songs are mirrors of each other.
And here we dive into Want vs Need. Tarzan wants to become the perfect gorilla, but what he needs is to figure out where he really belongs, and who he really is.
At the end he obviously finds out that he belongs with his family - but in a place sort of between both worlds. He takes what he's learned during Son of Man and what he's learned during Strangers Like Me, and he finds balance.
But like. Tell me how the fuck a big boss battle with Sabor would work in that setting. The final boss HAS to be man and a human construct. Otherwise the movie confirms that the jungle will always reject Tarzan, and human society truly is where he belongs.

Whenever I see a post about Chief Hiccup (or watch Httyd 2, for that matter) I'm always reminded of how Stoick did not want his son to become chief the way he did.
Maybe it's because Stoick saw his reluctance to succeed him, maybe it's something Stoick went through himself when he became chief and he wanted to spare his son the pain, but he had a plan. He was going to retire. Step down and let Hiccup take over in his stead. That way, his father could ease him into this insanely big responsibility, could be there to guide him, help him with the tough stuff he knows Hiccup might have trouble with.
Except, then he dies at Drago's hands. And Hiccup ends up thrusted into a position a feared to be in. And yeah, he does it mostly alone, just as his father did before him, which is exactly what Stoick was hoping to avoid.

If anything I hope this continues the tradition of big Hollywood actors becoming weirdly invested in Sonic characters.
