Cyclone Mocha: Hasun’s Story
Tumblr media
Photo: A Rohingya woman with a young child walks through a destroyed community near Sittwe, Myanmar.
Hasun is Rohingya and father to 3 children: A 10 year-old, 7 year-old, and 3 year-old.
He shared that his community near Sittwe, Myanmar received information about the cyclone and flooding. The village administrator suggested evacuating to a safer place but didn't say where to go. Some people moved to other villages where they have relatives. Hasun said they didn’t have any relatives to go to. He and his wife didn’t know where to go with their three children, so they decided to stay home. On Sunday the 14th, around 12 pm, the wind started, and it became stronger and stronger. He was aware that the storm was very powerful and realized that he couldn't stay home anymore. There had been some cyclones before, but this time it was so strong.
Tumblr media
Suddenly, more water came in quickly with high speeds and washed out his wife and mother-in-law.
He is not sure what time his family decided to leave the house. It was flooding outside; they were trying to get out of the village. Suddenly, more water came in quickly with high speeds and washed out his wife and mother-in-law. The water reached up to his neck. He managed to escape with his three children, but he couldn't save his wife and her mother. His wife's dead body was found hooked on the barbed wire fence. She was thirty years old.
Tumblr media
He said some people wouldn’t have died if there was no barbed wire fence. Because of the fence, they had to choose a different route to escape, which took more time, and resulted in many lost lives. Some people tried to break the brick wall on the other side of the airport, later some police helped them break it, and they were able to escape from the flood.
His children are living with a family in another village, and the youngest child is always crying for their mother. Now, he is living in his village beside the road. Almost every house was destroyed in Sittwe, so it is hard for people to host another family. Now, the most important thing that they need is rice, food, and shelter.
The stories from our Rohingya friends whose entire communities were destroyed by Cyclone Mocha are heartbreaking to hear. The crisis caused by this natural disaster was gravely compounded by the dire conditions that Rohingya families endure under the Myanmar government.
We are called to bear witness to our friends' experiences as we stand in solidarity with them.
Please join us as our team rapidly responds to the urgent relief requests from Rohingya communities in the aftermath of Cyclone Mocha.

UK's Firm Stance on Myanmar Crisis: A Call for Humanity and Justice
Tumblr media
Overview of the UK's Advocacy for the Rohingya People
The Humanitarian Crisis The plight of the Rohingya in Myanmar has reached a critical juncture, eliciting global concern and demanding immediate action. The United Kingdom, under the steadfast guidance of Human Rights Ambassador Rita French, has voiced its profound dismay and called for urgent measures during the 55th session of the UN Human Rights Council. This article delves into the intricacies of the Interactive Dialogue on Myanmar, providing a detailed analysis of the UK's stance on the ongoing humanitarian crisis.   The Suffering of the Rohingya: A Bleak Reality The Rohingya, a predominantly Muslim minority in Myanmar, endure systemic discrimination, marked by denial of citizenship, restricted movement, and limited access to essential services. The military's relentless airstrikes and shelling of civilian targets exemplify a blatant disregard for human life, exacerbating an already dire situation. Furthermore, the escalation of conflict in Rakhine state has significantly hindered humanitarian access, compounding the suffering of the Rohingya and other Muslim minorities.   The UK's Commendable Response The United Kingdom has emerged as a beacon of hope, extending substantial aid to alleviate the crisis. Since 2017, the UK has contributed over £370 million to support the refugees in Bangladesh, alongside over £30 million directed towards aiding the Rohingya and other affected minorities within Myanmar. This financial assistance underscores the UK's unwavering commitment to fostering conditions conducive to the safe, voluntary, and dignified return of the Rohingya to their homeland.   Advocacy for Accountability and Justice Accountability remains a cornerstone of the UK's strategy to address the crisis. The recent joint declaration of intervention at the International Court of Justice, spearheaded by the UK and its partners against Myanmar, signifies a pivotal step towards ensuring justice for the Rohingya. The UK's support for the Independent Investigative Mechanism for Myanmar (IIMM) further emphasizes its dedication to collecting evidence crucial for holding perpetrators accountable.   Challenges and Prospects for Resolution Despite the UK's substantial contributions and diplomatic efforts, obstacles persist. Myanmar's reluctance to acknowledge the rights of the Rohingya and the geopolitical complexities involving neighbouring countries pose significant challenges. Nonetheless, the UK remains resolute in its advocacy, leveraging diplomatic channels to advocate for a sustainable resolution that guarantees the rights and safety of the Rohingya.   A Path Forward The crisis in Myanmar is a stark reminder of the collective responsibility to uphold human rights and dignity. Additionally, the UK's proactive stance, characterized by humanitarian aid and a call for accountability, sets a commendable example for the international community. Moreover, it is imperative that global actors unite to address this humanitarian crisis, ensuring that the Rohingya are afforded the justice and dignity they rightfully deserve.   Sources: THX News, Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office & Rita French. Ikigai Exec Says ‘Large Majority’ of Crypto Asset Management Firm’s Funds Stuck on FTX
Tumblr media
“a large majority of the hedge fund’s total assets” were stored on FTX. Ikigai chief investment officer, Travis Kling, told the public on Twitter and he said there’s “a lot of uncertainty about what’s going to happen next.”
Ikigai Chief Investment Officer Shares ‘Some Pretty Bad News’
Another hedge fund has detailed it has lost money from the FTX scandal, according to a Twitter thread published by Ikigai’s chief investment officer Travis Kling. “Unfortunately,” Kling said. “I have some pretty bad news to share. Last week Ikigai was caught up in the FTX collapse. We had a large majority of the hedge fund’s total assets on FTX. By the time we went to withdraw Monday , we got very little out. We’re now stuck alongside everyone else.” A similar situation happened to the hedge fund Galois Capital, according to the company’s co-founder Kevin Zhou. The Galois co-founder noted that his firm had “roughly half” of the firm’s capital “stuck on FTX.” Kling’s thread published on Nov. 14, 2022, details that Ikigai has been “in constant communication” with the hedge fund’s investors since Monday. “The amount of support we’ve received has been astonishing given the circumstances, and deeply heartwarming,” Kling remarked. However, Kling further stressed that he wasn’t too pleased with the decisions he made. Kling said: It was entirely my fault and not anyone else’s. I lost my investors’ money after they put faith in me to manage risk and I am truly sorry for that. I have publicly endorsed FTX many times and I am truly sorry for that. I was wrong. Galois and Ikigai are not the only companies that have shared exposure to the FTX fallout. Reports show that the crypto venture capital firm Multicoin Capital had $25 million stuck on FTX. Furthermore, Galaxy Digital published its third-quarter earnings report and explained it has an “exposure of approximately $76.8 million of cash and digital assets to FTX.” The crypto exchange FTX filed for bankruptcy protection in the U.S. on Nov. 11, 2022. The company’s creditors will now have to deal with bankruptcy court proceedings going forward. Galois’s Zhou told his investors that the bankruptcy process may take years. “Over the coming weeks and months, the timeline and potential recovery for FTX customers will become clearer,” Ikigai’s CIO Kling said. “Right now, it’s really hard to say. At some point, we’ll be able to make a better call on whether Ikigai is going to keep going or just move into winddown mode,” the executive added. What do you think about the hedge fund Ikigai having funds stuck on FTX? Let us know your thoughts about this subject in the comments section below. Read the full article

1.
This week.
our team has been responding to the fire that broke out in the Rohingya refugee camps near Cox’s Bazar in Bangladesh on Sunday. 2,000 homes were destroyed, leaving around 12,000 people without shelter. We are heartbroken for our Rohingya friends who are facing unimaginable loss once again.

#GivingTuesday
may be a distant memory, but we haven’t forgotten the power of this community to come together to ensure 6 Rohingya villages in Myanmar have the security of a regular supply of rice. The first distribution of 50kg bags have made it to our Rohingya friends who, whilst also having food for their kids, know for certain that they haven’t been forgotten. This is what it looks like when we put love into action.

Nahida is Rohingya
but she doesn’t know what Myanmar looks like. As a second-generation refugee, she and her family still experience so many of the same challenges as those who fled the 2017 genocide. One of those is access to education. But you’re doing something to change that.

United States' Continued Support for the Rohingya Crisis
Tumblr media
  A Commitment to Global Solidarity
In a powerful display of international unity, Under Secretary Zeya delivered a compelling address at a high-level United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) side event, reaffirming the United States' unwavering commitment to the Rohingya crisis. Hosted jointly with the Government of Bangladesh, the event underscored the imperative of continued global support for Rohingya refugees.   Gratitude and Generosity Expressing her gratitude, Under Secretary Zeya extended her thanks to Madam Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and the Government of Bangladesh for their gracious invitation to co-host this vital gathering. It served as a platform for renewed dedication to finding solutions for the displaced Rohingya.
Insights from the Ground
Having recently visited the Rohingya refugee camps in Cox's Bazar, Under Secretary Zeya shared three profound observations that have shaped her perspective on the crisis.   Bangladesh's Remarkable Generosity First and foremost, she highlighted the extraordinary generosity of the government and people of Bangladesh. Six years have passed since Bangladesh opened its doors to more than 740,000 Rohingya, who fled the brutal campaign of genocide and ethnic cleansing in Burma. Despite the immense burden, Bangladesh continues to provide shelter and support, a testament to its unwavering commitment to humanity.   The Vital Role of Humanitarian Aid Secondly, Under Secretary Zeya emphasized the life-saving impact of humanitarian assistance and the dedicated efforts of organizations like UNHCR and IOM in the lives of Rohingya refugees and vulnerable host communities. She also underscored the catastrophic consequences when essential aid and support fail to reach those in need.
U.S. Commitment and Support
With pride, Under Secretary Zeya announced the United States' commitment to provide more than $116 million in new humanitarian assistance. This funding, exceeding $74 million for Rohingya refugees and their host communities in Bangladesh and the surrounding region, brings the U.S. contribution to over $2.2 billion since 2017. This support aims to save lives, offer protection, provide shelter, ensure sanitation, deliver healthcare, and empower Rohingya and Bangladeshis to build safer communities.   A Resolute Rohingya Community Thirdly, Under Secretary Zeya bore witness to the determination of Rohingya women, men, and youth to forge a future in Burma when conditions permit. Despite their desire to return to a country that recognizes them as citizens and safeguards their rights, the ongoing brutality of Burma's military regime poses significant obstacles to their safe repatriation.   Encouraging Education and Livelihood Opportunities While awaiting safer conditions, the Rohingya population seeks opportunities to develop skills for sustainable reintegration into Rakhine State. The United States strongly advocates for the expansion of education and livelihood opportunities for Rohingya in Bangladesh, while also supporting local communities that host them.   A Shared Responsibility for a Peaceful Future Unser Secretary Zeya called upon the international community to maintain pressure on Burma's military regime to end the crisis, create conditions for voluntary and safe repatriation, and hold those responsible for genocide and other atrocities accountable. The goal is a peaceful, inclusive, and democratic Burma where all, including Rohingya, can flourish.
Resettlement as a Path Forward
Recognizing the current risks to Rohingya returning home, resettlement emerges as another crucial component of comprehensive solutions. The United States has welcomed nearly 13,000 Rohingya, including those from Bangladesh, since 2009. Priority is given to the most vulnerable among them, and a call is issued for other nations to join in providing sanctuary to Rohingya refugees.   Unwavering U.S. Support In closing, Under Secretary Zeya reiterated the United States' steadfast support for the Rohingya crisis response and expressed gratitude for the solidarity of its partners. The international community stands together in confronting this humanitarian challenge, demonstrating the power of unity in the face of adversity.   Sources: THX News & US Department of State.
