A Surprise Blockbuster in Brazil Stokes Oscar Hopes, and a Reckoning
Decades after her mother missed out on an Oscar, Brazil’s Fernanda Torres may have a chance to win a golden statuette with a role in a film that has set off deep soul-searching.

Fernanda Torres still remembers the day her mother, Brazil’s grande dame of film, came within reach of cinema’s most coveted prize: an Oscar.
“It had great symbolism for Brazil,” Ms. Torres, an acclaimed actress herself, said in an interview. “I mean, Brazil produced something like her, you know?” she added. “It was very beautiful.”
A quarter-century ago, Fernanda Montenegro, now 95, made history when she became the first Brazilian actress to be nominated for an Academy Award. She lost to Gwyneth Paltrow, and Brazil never got over what it considered a snub.
Now, Ms. Torres, 59, is attracting chatter in Hollywood that could put her in line to win the elusive golden statuette for a role that has ignited cinematic fever — and a national reckoning — in Latin America’s largest country.
Millions of viewers are packing theaters to watch “I’m Still Here,” a quiet drama starring Ms. Torres about a family torn apart by a military junta that ruled Brazil, by fear and force, for over two decades.
This past week, the movie was nominated for a Golden Globe for best foreign language film, and Ms. Torres was nominated in the lead actress category, bolstering Oscar hopes.
Though the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which oversees the Oscars, will not reveal its nominations until January, “I’m Still Here” is Brazil’s official entry in the international feature film category.
At home, the movie has struck a nerve in a nation that suffered through the brutal dictatorship from 1964 to 1985.

Ms. Torres in a scene from “I’m Still Here.” The movie depicts a family living under Brazil’s military dictatorship.
Set in Rio de Janeiro in the 1970s, “I’m Still Here” tells the story of Eunice Paiva and her five children, whose lives are upended when the family patriarch, Rubens Paiva, a former congressman played by Selton Mello, disappears at the hands of the military government.
By telling this family’s story, the film tackles a “piece of Brazilian history” that is being forgotten, said Walter Salles, the movie’s director and one of the nation’s most prolific filmmakers. “The personal story of the Paiva family is the collective story of a country.”
The film has quickly become a national treasure, breaking box office records and eclipsing usual crowd-pleasers like “Wicked” and “Gladiator 2.”
Since the release of “I’m Still Here” in early November, more than 2.5 million Brazilians have seen it in theaters, and it has grossed more than six times the amount made by last year’s most-watched Brazilian film.
In a troubling twist, the movie was being widely shown in Brazil just as the police revealed new details about a plot to stage a coup and keep the far-right president, Jair Bolsonaro, a defender of the military dictatorship, in power after he lost the 2022 election.
Against this backdrop, the film’s themes have gained an urgent new meaning, said Marcelo Rubens Paiva, whose book about his family inspired the movie.
“The timing was, unfortunately, perfect,” he said, “because it showed this story isn’t just in our past.”

The home in Rio de Janeiro where “I’m Still Here” was filmed. A military junta’s repressive rule lasted for more than two decades.
Human rights groups estimate that hundreds of people were disappeared and some 20,000 were tortured during the dictatorship. But, unlike Chile or Argentina, where many crimes committed there under military dictatorships have been tried and punished, Brazil has not pursued accountability for its military’s atrocities.
In recent years, what many had seen as the distant past began to creep into the present. Mr. Bolsonaro, a retired army captain, spoke frequently in nostalgic terms about the dictatorship, awarded thousands of government jobs to soldiers and dismantled a panel investigating crimes committed during the military’s rule.
Movies and other forms of cultural works were frequent targets of censorship during the dictatorship, which considered them political foes. Now, films like “I’m Still Here” can serve as “instruments against forgetting,” Mr. Salles said. “Cinema reconstructs memory.”
And the film has surely ignited Brazil’s collective memory. In classrooms and newspaper pages, heated debates are unfolding over the legacy of the dictatorship. On social media, stories of suffering at the hands of the military government have gone viral, drawing millions of views.
On a recent rainy weekday, as moviegoers packed a Rio de Janeiro theater, it was clear that “I’m Still Here” had cast a wide spell. Groups of teenagers, fathers and sons and older couples were all clutching tickets.
Some snapped selfies in front of the movie’s poster. Others took deep breaths before stepping into the theater’s darkness.
Inside, the crowd gasped at the sounds of the torture of political prisoners; teared up when Eunice, played by Ms. Torres, defiantly smiled for a newspaper photo, unwavering in the face of tragedy; and stifled sobs when Ms. Montenegro made a silent appearance in the closing scenes, as an older Eunice whose memories were fading.
The film echoed a familiar past for many. “It shows everything we lived through,” said Dr. Eneida Glória Mendes, 73, who grew up in a military family during the dictatorship.
Dr. Mendes, who has watched the film twice, remembers ripping up letters she received from friends who criticized the regime so that her father would not see them. Anyone sending or receiving such correspondence could have been detained.
“We were not free,” she said. “Even a silly criticism could lead to arrest.”
For younger Brazilians, the film offered a glimpse into a reality they had heard about only at school. “For my generation, there’s this thirst to know more,” said Sara Chaves, 25, an aspiring actress.

Sara Chaves outside a theater showing “I’m Still Here” in Rio de Janeiro. Referring to the military dictatorship, she said, “There’s this thirst to know more.”
“I’m Still Here” has also captivated audiences and critics abroad. When it premiered in Venice this year, it won an award for best screenplay and drew a thundering applause that lasted 10 minutes.
So when the academy shared an image on social media of Ms. Torres at a Hollywood industry gala last month, Brazilians went wild. “Give her the award already!” said one of the more than 820,000 comments on Instagram.
If she is nominated in the best actress category, Ms. Torres would be following a remarkably similar path to her mother, who was nominated in 1999 for her role as a letter writer for illiterate people in “Central Station,” a Brazilian classic also directed by Mr. Salles.
“There was this feeling in the country that she was deeply wronged,” said Isabela Boscov, a Brazilian cinema critic who has been reviewing films for three decades.
“I’m Still Here” is widely expected to receive a nomination in the international film category, according to Hollywood insiders, but Ms. Torres’s chances are more uncertain.
Sony Pictures Classics, the studio distributing “I’m Still Here” globally, which launched the successful best actress nomination bid for Ms. Montenegro, is making a concerted push for Ms. Torres. Yet she may face tough odds this year in a crowded field that includes names like Angelina Jolie and Nicole Kidman.
To Ms. Torres, an Oscar nomination “would be a big victory” in itself, but she is not getting her hopes up. “It would be an incredible story if I got there, following my mother,” she said. “Now, winning — I consider it impossible.”
Since the first Oscars ceremony in 1929, only two actresses have won awards for leading roles in foreign-language films.
On a recent Sunday afternoon at Ms. Torres’s home, she sat across from her mother, reminiscing about art and family and other films the two have made together.
“This is also a legacy of life, of a profession,” Ms. Montenegro said, gesturing toward her daughter, then herself.

In 1999, Ms. Montenegro became the first Brazilian actress to be nominated for an Oscar, for her role in “Central Station.”
After a career spanning more than seven decades, Ms. Montenegro is still acting in films and onstage. But her movements are slower, her eyesight is weakening and she rests more.
Sharing a character with her daughter, in a film that has inspired awe and soul-searching across Brazil, has carried personal symbolism, too. “It’s a really special moment,” Ms. Montenegro said.
After a final lipstick check in the mirror, the two actresses faced a camera for a photograph for this article. They moved their faces close together, their cheeks nearly touching. Like Eunice Paiva, in the movie both are in, they prefer to smile.
“My mother is still alive; all is well with her,” Ms. Torres explained. “I’m happy.”
“By chance, I’m still here,” Ms. Montenegro replied. Ms. Torres chimed in: “We’re still here.”

Brazilian government appoints two new Central Bank directors

Finance Minister Fernando Haddad announced on Monday the names of two new directors of the Central Bank.
Paulo Picchetti, an economist at the Fundação Getulio Vargas think tank, will oversee international affairs and corporate risk management, while Rodrigo Alves Teixeira, a career Central Bank employee, will be the new director of relationships, citizenship, and conduct supervision.
The two nominees will replace Fernanda Guardado and Maurício Moura, whose terms end in December. With the new names, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva will have appointed four of the nine members of the Central Bank board.
The other nominees of the current government took office in July: Ailton Aquino took over the supervisory board, and former deputy finance minister Gabriel Galípolo took over monetary policy — a key position in the bank’s Monetary Policy Committee.

B-13 : Oscars 2025 Predictions - A Film Fan’s Take

The 97th Academy Awards, also known as The Oscars®, will take place on March 3rd at 4:30 AM IST, as the excitement of the awards season is reaching its peak.
2024 has been a rather disappointing year for cinema—at least since I’ve been seriously following it. Many highly anticipated films failed to leave a lasting impact, making this year feel underwhelming. Hopefully, 2025 will bring a stronger slate of films, delivering multiple hits and unforgettable cinematic moments. I’d also like to mention that most of my predictions are likely to go wrong—this year’s race just hasn’t been that exciting.
2024 was also a year of sequels, with long-awaited follow-ups to classics like Dune: Part Two, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, Joker: Folie à Deux, and Gladiator II hitting the big screen.
Now, with less than 24 hours until the ceremony, let’s dive into the major categories and my predictions for the winners. These are based on industry trends, results from other major awards (like the Golden Globes, BAFTAs, Critics’ Choice, and Guild awards), and, of course, my personal take.
So sit back and stay with me till the end!
P.S. SPOILER ALERT!!!!
Best Picture
Nominees:
Anora – Alex Coco, Samantha Quan, and Sean Baker, producers
The Brutalist – Nick Gordon, Brian Young, Andrew Morrison, D.J. Gugenheim, and Brady Corbet, producers
A Complete Unknown – Fred Berger, James Mangold, and Alex Heineman, producers
Conclave – Tessa Ross, Juliette Howell, and Michael A. Jackman, producers
Dune: Part Two – Mary Parent, Cale Boyter, Tanya Lapointe, and Denis Villeneuve, producers
Emilia Pérez – Pascal Caucheteux and Jacques Audiard, producers
I'm Still Here – Maria Carlota Bruno and Rodrigo Teixeira, producers
Nickel Boys – Dede Gardner, Jeremy Kleiner, and Joslyn Barnes, producers
The Substance – Coralie Fargeat, Tim Bevan, and Eric Fellner, producers
Wicked – Marc Platt, producer

Prediction(s): Anora / The Brutalist / Conclave
The Academy might favor The Brutalist, a film about accomplishing the American dream. However, Conclave, a political film involving the church, and Anora, a Cinderella story about a New York stripper and Palme d’Or winner, are strong contenders too.
Best Director
Nominees:
Sean Baker – Anora
Brady Corbet – The Brutalist
James Mangold – A Complete Unknown
Jacques Audiard – Emilia Pérez
Coralie Fargeat – The Substance

Prediction(s): Sean Baker / Brady Corbet
Palme d’Or winner Sean Baker faces strong competition from Corbet, who has received multiple wins at award ceremonies this year.
Best Actor
Nominees:
Adrien Brody – The Brutalist as László Tóth
Timothée Chalamet – A Complete Unknown as Bob Dylan
Colman Domingo – Sing Sing as John "Divine G" Whitfield
Ralph Fiennes – Conclave as Cardinal Thomas Lawrence
Sebastian Stan – The Apprentice as Donald Trump

Prediction(s): Adrien Brody / Timothée Chalamet
Brody, a Golden Globe winner, plays a man chasing the American dream, while SAG winner Chalamet portrays the poetic genius Bob Dylan. While Brody is the frontrunner, Chalamet cannot be ruled out.
Best Actress
Nominees:
Cynthia Erivo – Wicked as Elphaba Thropp
Karla Sofía Gascón – Emilia Pérez as Emilia Pérez / Juan "Manitas" Del Monte
Mikey Madison – Anora as Anora "Ani" Mikheeva
Demi Moore – The Substance as Elisabeth Sparkle
Fernanda Torres – I'm Still Here as Eunice Paiva

Prediction(s): Demi Moore / Fernanda Torres
Both actresses, who won Golden Globes this year, have delivered career-defining performances. However, Moore appears to have the edge.
Best Supporting Actor
Nominees:
Yura Borisov – Anora as Igor
Kieran Culkin – A Real Pain as Benji Kaplan
Edward Norton – A Complete Unknown as Pete Seeger
Guy Pearce – The Brutalist as Harrison Lee Van Buren Sr.
Jeremy Strong – The Apprentice as Roy Cohn

Prediction: Kieran Culkin
Culkin, brother of Home Alone’s Macaulay Culkin, delivers a standout performance as a free-spirited man unafraid to express himself.
Best Supporting Actress
Nominees:
Monica Barbaro – A Complete Unknown as Joan Baez
Ariana Grande – Wicked as Galinda "Glinda" Upland
Felicity Jones – The Brutalist as Erzsébet Tóth
Isabella Rossellini – Conclave as Sister Agnes
Zoe Saldaña – Emilia Pérez as Rita Mora Castro

Prediction: Zoe Saldaña
While I didn’t enjoy Emilia Pérez as much as others, Saldaña was the highlight. Having swept key awards, she is the undeniable favorite.
Best Original Screenplay
Nominees:
Anora – Sean Baker
The Brutalist – Brady Corbet and Mona Fastvold
A Real Pain – Jesse Eisenberg
September 5 – Moritz Binder and Tim Fehlbaum; co-written by Alex David
The Substance – Coralie Fargeat

Prediction(s): Anora/A Real Pain
While the former is this year's Palme d'Or winner, the latter has won numerous accolades. The competition seems tough in this category.
Best Adapted Screenplay
Nominees:
A Complete Unknown – James Mangold and Jay Cocks; based on the book Dylan Goes Electric! by Elijah Wald
Conclave – Peter Straughan; based on the novel by Robert Harris
Emilia Pérez – Jacques Audiard; in collaboration with Thomas Bidegain, Léa Mysius, and Nicolas Livecchi; based on the opera libretto Emilia Pérez by Jacques Audiard and the novel Écoute by Boris Razon
Nickel Boys – RaMell Ross and Joslyn Barnes; based on the novel The Nickel Boys by Colson Whitehead
Sing Sing – Screenplay by Greg Kwedar and Clint Bentley; story by Greg Kwedar, Clint Bentley, Clarence Maclin, and John "Divine G" Whitfield; based on the book The Sing Sing Follies by John H. Richardson and the play Breakin' the Mummy's Code by Brent Buell

Prediction: Conclave
There’s been a history of political movies winning in this category – and Conclave shall continue to practice this tradition.
Best Animated Feature
Nominees:
Flow – Gints Zilbalodis, Matīss Kaža, Ron Dyens, and Gregory Zalcman
Inside Out 2 – Kelsey Mann and Mark Nielsen
Memoir of a Snail – Adam Elliot and Liz Kearney
Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl – Nick Park, Merlin Crossingham, and Richard Beek
The Wild Robot – Chris Sanders and Jeff Hermann
Prediction(s): The Wild Robot/Inside Out 2
The former is a beautiful film with a sweet and strong message, this film was a craze across the world. However, the latter’s prequel won an Oscar – hence, a strong contender.
Best International Feature Film
Nominees:
Emilia Pérez (France) in Spanish – directed by Jacques Audiard
Flow (Latvia) – directed by Gints Zilbalodis
The Girl with the Needle (Denmark) in Danish – directed by Magnus von Horn
I'm Still Here (Brazil) in Portuguese – directed by Walter Salles
The Seed of the Sacred Fig (Germany) in Persian – directed by Mohammad Rasoulof

Prediction(s): Emilia Perez/I’m Still Here
The former has separated the favorable critics from the not-so-merciful audience. The critics’ choice win the awards. I personally hope that the latter win.
Best Documentary Feature Film
Nominees:
Black Box Diaries – Shiori Itō, Eric Nyari, and Hanna Aqvilin
No Other Land – Basel Adra, Rachel Szor, Hamdan Ballal, and Yuval Abraham
Porcelain War – Brendan Bellomo, Slava Leontyev, Aniela Sidorska, and Paula DuPré Pesmen
Soundtrack to a Coup d'Etat – Johan Grimonprez, Daan Milius, and Rémi Grellety
Sugarcane –Julian Brave NoiseCat, Emily Kassie, and Kellen Quinn

Prediction(s): No Other Land/Porcelain War
While the former is a work of Palestinian-Israeli collective of four activists amidst the ongoing conflict in the region, the latter is a tale of artists amid the Russian-Ukrainian conflict. The Academy favors war documentaries.
Best Documentary Short Film
Nominees:
Death by Numbers – Kim A. Snyder and Janique L. Robillard
I Am Ready, Warden – Smriti Mundhra and Maya Gnyp
Incident – Bill Morrison and Jamie Kalven
Instruments of a Beating Heart – Ema Ryan Yamazaki and Eric Nyari
The Only Girl in the Orchestra – Molly O'Brien and Lisa Remington

Prediction(s): Incident/Instruments of a Beating Heart/The Only Girl in the Orchestra
The first choice is about police brutality and racism – which a multicultural Academy might favor. However, the other options can follow trend of rewarding documentaries about music – like last year’s The Last Repair Shop.
Best Live Action Short Film
Nominees:
A Lien – Sam Cutler-Kreutz and David Cutler-Kreutz
Anuja – Adam J. Graves and Suchitra Mattai
I'm Not a Robot – Victoria Warmerdam and Trent
The Last Ranger – Cindy Lee and Darwin Shaw
The Man Who Could Not Remain Silent – Nebojša Slijepčević and Danijel Pek

Prediction(s): A Lien/The Man Who Could Not Remain Silent
It’s a tough choice between a tale about a family facing the challenges of achieving the American Dream amidst an immigration interview – and the latter being about a man who stands against the ethnic “cleansing” of innocent civilians in Bosnia and Herzegovina in 1993.
Best Animated Short Film
Nominees:
Beautiful Men – Nicolas Keppens and Brecht Van Elslande
In the Shadow of the Cypress – Shirin Sohani and Hossein Molayemi
Magic Candies – Daisuke Nishio and Takashi Washio
Wander to Wonder – Nina Gantz and Stienette Bosklopper
Yuck! – Loïc Espuche and Juliette Marquet

Prediction(s): Yuck!/Magic Candies
While the former contender is about pre-adolescence innocence and the feelings kids have, the latter is a Japanese flick about a young boy coming across loneliness, connection, and self-awareness.
Best Original Score
Nominees:
The Brutalist – Daniel Blumberg
Conclave – Volker Bertelmann
Emilia Pérez – Clément Ducol and Camille
Wicked – John Powell and Stephen Schwartz
The Wild Robot – Kris Bowers

Prediction: The Brutalist
The music of The Brutalist is likely to continue the trend of epic scores winning the trophy – after Dune, All Quiet on the Western Front, and Oppenheimer.
Best Original Song
Nominees:
"El Mal" from Emilia Pérez – Music by Clément Ducol and Camille; lyrics by Clément Ducol, Camille, and Jacques Audiard
"The Journey" from The Six Triple Eight – Music and lyrics by Diane Warren
"Like a Bird" from Sing Sing – Music and lyrics by Abraham Alexander and Adrian Quesada
"Mi Camino" from Emilia Pérez – Music and lyrics by Camille and Clément Ducol
"Never Too Late" from Elton John: Never Too Late – Music and lyrics by Elton John, Brandi Carlile, Andrew Watt, and Bernie Taupin

Prediction: El Mal/Never Too Late
This year’s Golden Globe winner was a Spanish song – hence a possibility. However, the latter comes from the two-time Oscar winner Elton John. The latter might make him a three-time winner.
Best Sound
Nominees:
A Complete Unknown – Tod A. Maitland, Donald Sylvester, Ted Caplan, Paul Massey, and David Giammarco
Dune: Part Two – Gareth John, Richard King, Ron Bartlett, and Doug Hemphill
Emilia Pérez – Erwan Kerzanet, Aymeric Devoldère, Maxence Dussère, Cyril Holtz, and Niels Barletta
Wicked – Simon Hayes, Nancy Nugent Title, Jack Dolman, Andy Nelson, and John Marquis
The Wild Robot – Randy Thom, Brian Chumney, Gary A. Rizzo, and Leff Lefferts

Prediction(s): A Complete Unknown/Dune: Part Two
Sci-fi adventure films are like to win in this category. However, the sound design of the Bob Dylan biopic was also magnificent. It’s a win-win for Timothee Chalamet either way.
Best Production Design
Nominees:
The Brutalist – Production Design: Judy Becker; Set Decoration: Patricia Cuccia
Conclave – Production Design: Suzie Davies; Set Decoration: Cynthia Sleiter
Dune: Part Two – Production Design: Patrice Vermette; Set Decoration: Shane Vieau
Nosferatu – Production Design: Craig Lathrop; Set Decoration: Beatrice Brentnerová
Wicked – Production Design: Nathan Crowley; Set Decoration: Lee Sandales

Prediction(s): Wicked/The Brutalist
Wicked is the film I’m least interested about. However, the Wizard of Oz prequel can win in this category. I’m rooting for The Brutalist due to its architectural theme.
Best Cinematography
Nominees:
The Brutalist – Lol Crawley
Dune: Part Two – Greig Fraser
Emilia Pérez – Paul Guilhaume
Maria – Edward Lachman
Nosferatu – Jarin Blaschke

Prediction(s): The Brutalist
Although I think that Dune: Part Two might win this year, The Brutalist would be the one – due to its stunning framing, composition, and color.
Best Makeup and Hairstyling
Nominees:
A Different Man – Mike Marino, David Presto, and Crystal Jurado
Emilia Pérez – Julia Floch Carbonel, Emmanuel Janvier, and Jean-Christophe Spadaccini
Nosferatu – David White, Traci Loader, and Suzanne Stokes-Munton
The Substance – Pierre-Oliver Persin, Stéphanie Guillon, and Marilyne Scarselli
Wicked – Frances Hannon, Laura Blount, and Sarah Nuth

Prediction(s): The Substance/Wicked
Theformer is definitely going to win for make up – as we saw one of the most horrifying looks in recent movies. The latterstands achance – but theodds are not its favor.
Best Costume Designing
Nominees:
A Complete Unknown – Arianne Phillips
Conclave – Lisy Christl
Gladiator II – Janty Yates and Dave Crossman
Nosferatu – Linda Muir
Wicked – Paul Tazewell

Prediction: Wicked
This can be another win for the fantasy tale.
Best Film Editing
Nominees:
Anora – Sean Baker
The Brutalist – Dávid Jancsó
Conclave – Nick Emerson
Emilia Pérez – Juliette Welfling
Wicked – Myron Kerstein

Prediction: Anora
The film editing of Anora was marvelously rapid in certain scenes – to make up for the pace of the film. This might make Baker the first man to win four awards in a ceremony.
Best Visual Effects
Nominees:
Alien: Romulus – Eric Barba, Nelson Sepulveda-Fauser, Daniel Macarin, and Shane Mahan
Better Man – Luke Millar, David Clayton, Keith Herft, and Peter Stubbs
Dune: Part Two – Paul Lambert, Stephen James, Rhys Salcombe, and Gerd Nefzer
Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes – Erik Winquist, Stephen Unterfranz, Paul Story, and Rodney Burke
Wicked – Pablo Helman, Jonathan Fawkner, David Shirk, and Paul Corbould

Prediction: Dune: Part Two
And finally, Dune will follow the trend of sequels winning the Visual Effects award – with past cases like Avatar and Star Wars.
That's all for now. Let's see who wins what this year. See you at the Oscars.

The expression “Think globally, act locally” was coined in the 1970s by environmentalists urging people to consider the health of the entire planet while taking action in their own communities. This popular catchphrase can be applied in a variety of contexts, including Down to Earth’s farmers markets, which support local farmers and food makers, but also feature vendors selling a diversity of internationally themed foods. The “glocal” flavors of our markets combine global cuisine with locally grown and produced ingredients to quite literally let you enjoy the best of both worlds!
Poquito Picante Maylene KIein of Salsa Wallito was born in the Midwest but at an early age moved to Monterrey, N.L. Mexico where she was raised by her Abuelita Anita who taught her how to cook. Today, Maylene’s values and heritage, both American and Mexican, are something in which her family takes pride. A tradition they love to follow is cooking an authentic Mexican dish every week. Salsas are a staple in their home–they always add it to their dishes–both Mexican and American.
Salsa Wallito produces authentic Mexican salsa norteña in five distinct flavors: Bonita, Chipotle, Verde, Siete, and Tequilazo. Their family recipe is a century old and packed with flavors that will enhance your favorite dishes. The salsas come in three different heat levels to ensure there's an option for everyone to enjoy the distinct taste of a true authentic Mexican salsa norteña. Salsa Wallito uses locally sourced ingredients in their products.
It’s All Greek Olive trees first appeared thousands of years ago in the Mediterranean basin, but it is thought to be the Ancient Greeks who first cultivated olive trees and produced olive oil. They believed that olive oil was a gift from the goddess Athena and used it for various purposes, including cooking, lighting, and religious ceremonies. Olive oil was so important to ancient Greek society that it was used as a form of currency, and Olympic athletes were anointed with olive oil before their competitions and awarded wreaths made with olive leaves for winning events.
DEMI Olive Oil is made in Greece from estate-grown olives and brought to the U.S. by the family that makes the oil. Their small-batch, single origin olive oil is the product of a longstanding family tradition: the roots of their olive trees are deeply embedded in the soil and history of Greece. Their team of Greek olive growers tends to the family olive grove with a commitment to quality and tradition that informs everything from how they care for the land and the trees, to how they harvest and press the olives.
Jamón In There Don Rodrigo Duarte of Goode and Local by Don Rodrigo operates a modern 12-acre farm in Sussex, New Jersey and several satellite fields in Warren County where he raises crossbred and purebred Alentejano (Iberico) hogs as well as Mangalitsa pigs. A true expert in his field, Duarte is exclusively certified by the country of Portugal to raise 100 percent purebred Iberico pigs outside of Portugal. Native to the Iberian Peninsula of Southwestern Europe, each Iberico pig is assigned a unique number as a piglet, and their life and DNA are meticulously tracked by the Department of Agriculture in Portugal.
Free to forage and root on the grains and grasses that carpet the landscape, the hogs are also fed an ample supply of blueberries, broccoli, bell peppers and other excess locally grown fresh produce, along with leftover artisanal bread from Teixeira’s Bakery in Newark. Duarte also supplements the hogs’ diet with the foods that the breed has traditionally been raised on -- chestnuts and acorns from Iberia’s Extremadura region.
Goode and Local crafts the finest handcrafted meats, charcuterie, and sausages straight from their farms to your table. The 16-month growth period of their hogs, free from intensive feeding, results in a distinctive and flavorful product. The taste of the meat from Duarte’s hogs, he says, “comes from nature, from the farmland, whatever herbs and flavors they eat.” Acorns are particularly rich in oleic acid (a monounsaturated omega-9 fatty acid), which penetrates the muscle fibers of the ham as it sweats during the curing process.
A Pita My Heart The husband-and-wife team of Serop and Jasmin Mandjian are best known as Coco and Nana. Serop's middle name is Gregory, and in their native Armenian language, Coco is the nickname for Gregory. As for Nana, this is the name their grandchildren exclaim as they throw open the kitchen door, wild in delight for the food soon to be served.
Coco and Nana were high school sweethearts in Armenia and married a few years later. They came to the United States in 1984, and Coco worked as a diamond setter for more than two decades. They have both enjoyed cooking since they were children, and once they married, they shared their love of the kitchen together. "She's my best friend for more than 45 years," Coco says of Nana.
As Coco retired from diamond setting, they were able to devote more time to their enjoyment of cooking fresh Middle Eastern foods from scratch. Encouraged by family and friends, they decided to offer their cooking to a broader audience and started Nana's Home Kitchen in 2010. The couple offers a diverse menu of savory and sweet Mediterranean foods, including hummus and other spreads, chicken kababs grilled on-site and served wrapped in a warm pita, empanadas, stuffed grape leaves, traditional cookies, baklava, and more.
Pasta La Vista Pasta is believed to have been consumed in Italy as early as the fourth century BCE. Archeological evidence shows the existence of pasta during the Etruscan civilization, which flourished in the regions now known as Lazio, Umbria and Tuscany. In fact, a bas-relief unearthed in an Etruscan tomb depicts tools and kitchen utensils used to roll and form pasta very similar to those still in use today. By the Middle Ages, pasta had become established as a staple food across Italy, with the poor eating it as a source of energy when meat was scarce, while the rich covered it with a variety of ingredients.
La Trafila Pasta is a Gowanus, Brooklyn based fresh pasta business founded by Jiselle & Luigi Speranza. Their passion for cooking and creating brought them together from opposite sides of the world. They use flour imported from Italy, along with local and regionally sourced ingredients whenever possible, to produce handcrafted pasta, stuffed gnocchi, sauces, tiramisu and cannoli. Trafila is an Italian word referring to the bronze cast die traditionally used in the process of extruding pasta dough to create various shapes.
Got Tofu? Great Joy Family Farm has become just that thanks to the vision, agricultural talent and hard work of Wendy Chen and a collective of her family members who moved to the United States a decade ago from a region in south central China known for its rivers, lakes and rice production. They have successfully parlayed their expertise in rice growing from China to the Hudson Valley, where they cultivate a range of different rice crops in paddies by the Wallkill River.
In addition to their array of locally grown rice and specialty Asian grain products like millet, Great Joy Family Farm makes fresh tofu from their non-GMO soybeans. Although widely associated with Japanese cuisine, tofu was first recorded in China during the Han dynasty, around 2,000 years ago. It was introduced to Japan several centuries later during the Nara period (710–794) by Japanese envoys to China who learned how to make tofu and brought it back with them.
Tofu is rich in protein, important minerals and essential nutrients and can be enjoyed by everyone, whether you're a vegetarian, vegan, or meat-eater. It’s low in calories and cholesterol-free, making it especially beneficial for heart health. Plus, cooking with tofu is easy as its mild taste makes it the perfect canvas for any flavor you want to add! Wendy recommends lightly coating it with cornstarch for a crispy texture before pan-frying it. You can add it to stir-fries, salads, or even grill or bake it with your favorite sauce for a delicious and well-rounded meal.
Stock Up On It In the fall of 2019, Edlin Choi, the founder of Reclamation Foods, left a career in tech to apprentice on a regenerative livestock farm that, uniquely, had its own processing facilities right on the farm. As a result, they were able to make use of the whole animal.
When he returned to New York in 2021, he spoke to 30+ farmers and learned that most of them had a hard time selling bones, fats, and even organ meats. Without the processing capabilities to turn them into more easily sellable products, some farmers stopped taking these nutrient-dense parts back from the abattoir altogether.
So Edlin decided to start buying those parts from local farmers and, taking inspiration from his Korean heritage, turn them into nourishing foods and drinks. Today, their award-winning Korean bone broth, a 2024 Good Food Award Winner and a 2024 Shelfie Awards Finalist, is part of a range of pantry staples. Their flagship collection includes two broths (beef and pork). Each is made with just two ingredients: bones and water, meant to be seasoned by you. Their broth is great for sipping, cooking, and even using in lattes! They will soon be launching heirloom cooking fats (tallow and lard) sourced from pasture-raised, grass-fed animals to further help you reclaim the kitchen and your health.
Reclamation Foods is on a mission to create an alternative food system centered on delicious and wholesome foods rooted in culture. They believe in reconnecting with the wisdom of traditional cuisine, honoring the animals we harvest, maximizing every animal harvest, finding harmony through agroecology, and rediscovering nourishment through food.
