TONIGHT on ME-TV @ 12:35am EST, one of the most EXISTENTIAL episodes of THE TWILIGHT ZONE: “AND WHEN THE SKY WAS OPENED” (written by Rod Serling, based on the short story “Disappearing Act” by Richard Matheson, originally broadcast December 11, 1959) Rod Serling’s first Twilight Zone adaptation of a story by esteemed science fiction writer Richard Matheson changed its original, generic domestic setting to that of the space race, as a better vehicle to explore the story’s nature of identity—conflating the loss of it with the loss of one’s actual, corporeal self. Following a crash landing back on earth, we watch in stunned disbelief as the three surviving astronauts, one by one (spoiler alert!), literally disappear into thin air, along with all memory of their existence. That indescribable, unsettling feeling of not “belonging” to reality is a very existential one, something never before played out on television (or film), and would not enter the popular culture again until the mid-to-late ‘60s, when the counter-cultural use of mind-altering psychedelic drugs like LSD and marijuana metaphysically transported their users with similar out-of-body experiences. Originally, lead actor Rod Taylor’s disappearing scene “was written as a very painful experience, but I decided to make it a very euphoric experience,” recalled director Douglas Heyes in Marc Scott Zicree’s Twilight Zone Companion. “Instead of playing it for terror or agony—everything had been fear up till then, fear of disappearing, fear of the unknown, and so forth—I said to Rod Taylor, ‘Let’s play this as if this is the most marvelous thing that’s ever happened.’” Taylor’s ability to fulfill Heyes’ direction so convincingly is just one example of what became a standard on The Twilight Zone: performances so intense and driven that you can see the belief of the unbelievable on actors’ faces, from the sweat naturally beading on their brows to the absolutely crazed look in their eyes. arlenschumer.com/twilight-zone #rodserling #twilightzone #thetwilightzone #richardmatheson #rodtaylor #arlenschumer #tv #television #tvhistory #televisionhistory @dgareps @nyadventureclub @the_richardsyrettshow https://www.instagram.com/p/CoxVgpXrbcm/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Click 🦜🦆Link In Bio🦆🦜 to listen to our (50th!!) episode on Hitchcock’s THE BIRDS for its 60th anniversary! “Hitchcock-A-Doodle-Do.” Matthew and Quinton return to the Master of Suspense, except this time they’re trading in shower curtains for sparrows. The Birds is an obvious choice to look at environmental concerns of the 1960s, so we discuss it anyway. Believe us when we say that if birds had marrow, we’d find it. What does The Birds have to do with Vietnam? What is Hitchcock telling us about chaos and order during one of the most tumultuous decades in recent history? And does anyone have a quarter so I can place a call in this phone booth… Swipe right for some genuine birdage. - ##horror #horrormovies #film #podcast #podcastersofinstagram #moviepodcast #horrorpodcast #visceralreactions #thebirds #alfredhitchcock #hitchcock #tippihedren #1960s #daphnedumaurier #rodtaylor #jessicatandy #whenanimalsattack #veronicacartwright #ecohorror #applepodcasts #spotifypodcast (at Audubon Zoo) https://www.instagram.com/p/CnrSfX2OieM/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

One Hundred and One Dalmatians (1961)
Tumblr media
One Hundred and One Dalmatians features no princesses or magic. Its music is downplayed significantly and the characters were brought to life by new methods, which give it a distinct look from the other films in the Disney canon but it's nonetheless unmistakably Disney. Based on the 1956 novel of the same name, this film has a terrific villain, a strong visual identity, and a unique charm - it's the dogs speaking in English accents.
Tired of the bachelor's life, dalmatian Pongo (voiced by Rod Taylor) decides to find a wife for his pet, Roger (Ben Wright), and a mate for himself. When he spots a Dalmatian named Perdita (voiced by Cate Bauer) and her pet Anita (Lisa Davis), it's love at first sight. Soon after, Pongo and Perdita are the proud parents of a litter of puppies. Enter Cruella De Vil (Betty Lou Gerson), who begs Roger and Anita to sell her the newborns. The refuse but she won’t take no for an answer.
Though the decision to use a Xerox camera to transfer the animators' drawings directly to the animation cels was made to cut costs, it gives the story a bold look. It's less clean; sometimes it borders on the sketchy. You're pleasantly reminded that what you're seeing was created by human hands. It also gives a contemporary look to a story that wants to distinguish itself from Sleeping Beauty and Snow White. The stylish backgrounds give the film a distinct look of a late '50s/early '60s England. It sets the right mood. This is a fantasy but you're not going to see any kind of wizardry. You can’t mistake it for any other Disney film.
If you take the time to really look at it, you'll notice that every human has a “sidekick” character. It’s fun to see how the design of an animal will translate into a human, or vice versa. The exception is the villains, who are given cars instead of animals. Cruella's bumbling cronies, Horace and Jasper (Frederick Worlock and J. Pat O'Malley) drive a clanking, jangling piece of garbage. Cruella roars down the streets in her Panther DeVille. You can just tell the designers spent hours figuring out the perfect vehicle for her and they nailed it. No good story is complete without a solid villain and Cruella ranks high in terms of being both memorable and despicable. From her entrance alone, you can tell she's going to be something special. Then, you get to see what she looks like. The protruding cheekbones, the miasma of poisonous cigarette smoke, the huge fur coat hanging over her skeletal figure, the way her hair is split down the middle and dyed… they needn't say anymore. You know she belongs right next to Darth Vader, or Lex Luthor.
The antagonist is what will charm adults. For the kids, there are plenty of colorful side characters to accompany the multitude of cute dogs found throughout. You get plenty of laughs, there's some family-friendly drama, and then an exciting climax that keeps ramping up the tension. The whole family can happily gather around it and have a great time. (On Blu-ray, May 27, 2015)
