Album Review: Oasis "Definitely, Maybe (30th Anniversary Deluxe Edition)"
On August 29, 1994, Definitely, Maybe, the debut album from U.K.'s Oasis was released. It came out just as Britpop was making a splash thanks to bands like Pulp, Blur, Suede and Oasis (all one-word band names). It is hands down one of the best albums of the 90s. It came out a few months after Kurt Cobain's passing and the music world was ready for something new. After years of music groups bemoaning fame, here was a band that wanted to be famous and loved being rock stars, which seemed refreshing. As Oasis-mania swept the world, I actually got more into them in 1996, by which point they had oversaturated rock radio. I picked up Definitely, Maybe on CD and loved it. A lot of people say the best Oasis album is 1995's follow-up (What's the Story) Morning Glory?, which is quite good but isn't nearly as epic as Definitely, Maybe (later the name of a 2008 movie that I worked on too). Being released this Friday on the 30th anniversary (a day later) is Definitely, Maybe (30th Anniversary Deluxe Edition).
original album cover
anniversary edition album cover
Through this blog, I've actually gotten to cover some Oasis releases including the 2021 live album Knebworth 1996 and the 25th Anniversary Edition of Be Here Now. Considering the band broke up in 2009, there is still an avid fan base wanting more compilations, live albums, documentaries and anniversary editions. The lineup of Oasis changed many times over the years but the heart and soul of the band has always been the brothers Gallagher: Liam on lead vocals and Noel on guitar and songwriting. Being in a band with your sibling can be both a good and a bad thing. I saw Oasis in 2000 and again in 2001 on the Brotherly Love Tour with The Black Crowes and Spacehog and the Gallaghers had the worst track records of in-fighting of any of those sibling bands.
the vinyl deluxe edition
After the band formed in Manchester, England in 1991 the lineup at this time also included guitarist Paul "Bonehead" Arthurs, bassist Paul "Guigsey" McGuigan, and drummer Tony McCarroll. This lineup was among their strongest. Easily! Disc 1 of this edition is the original album remastered. Every song rocks from the epic opening "Rock 'n' Roll Star" down to the acoustic kiss-off of "Married with Children". Disc 2 is the Monnow Valley versions (they first recorded at this studio and the sessions were scrapped, so you're hearing earlier recordings with these versions), Sawmill Studios outtakes (they recorded the album and Sawmill and these outtakes are ones that weren't used in the final recording) and an early 1992 demo of "Sad Song". The original album is a masterpiece and I don't use that term lightly. It was something that was truly of-the-moment: Britpop, Gen X, mid-90s and yet it was also retro with their Beatles' obsession not quite as overt as it would be on the next album, but also their love of Stone Roses, and yet it was also timeless. It's an awesome blast of Marshall amps in a melodic cocky made-for-arena sing-alongs! These new outtakes and alt versions don't really improve on the album, but it is kind of cool to hear the little differences of what it went from to what it became. Some are better than others, but it's short enough to enjoy what you're hearing as opposed to a box set with multiple takes of each song. We also haven't had any new Oasis music in over 15 years, which makes these unearthed versions seem more exciting than they'd normally be. As I was working on this review, news broke this week that Noel and Liam are reuniting with an Oasis tour in 2025 (no U.S. dates yet, but fingers crossed) and that proves how much these songs have stood the test of time!
For info on Definitely, Maybe (30th Anniversary Deluxe Edition)
Original album: 5 out of 5 stars
Anniversary Edition: 4 out of 5 stars

Album Review: 'GUTS' - Olivia Rodrigo
I admit, I didn’t jump on the Olivia Rodrigo train right away.
I kinda dismissed her debut single ‘driver’s license’ as nothing more than a syrupy, overwrought pop ballad from a Disney star looking to break out into the mainstream. Even now, I’m still not the biggest fan of it.
But then came ‘good 4 u.’
While GAYLE and Leah Kate traded in generic nursery rhyme hooks and Travis Barker became the go-to guy for pop punk cred, Rodrigo rocked out. Like, really rocked out, offering up razor-sharp riffage and a true scream-along chorus that didn’t come straight out of a kindergarten classroom (or an eight-person committee to write, including a nepo baby).
Rodrigo’s sickly-sweet taste for revenge made GAYLE and Leah Kate’s respective odes to a scummy ex sound like a temper tantrum in the middle of a supermarket, declaring him a ‘damn sociopath’ while crying on the bathroom floor, almost relishing in the breakdown. Fuck, even the profanity is used to better effect.
It might’ve been a facsimile of Paramore’s ‘Misery Business,’ but it’s a damn good one, something Rodrigo’s peers didn’t seem to get. So much of a homage to the track is ‘good 4 u,’ that Hayley Williams and former Paramore guitarist Josh Farro even received writing credits on the track.
Rodrigo further proves herself a purveyor of fine angst on her second album. Where her 2021 debut SOUR was mired in ballads, preoccupied with the same bastard ex, GUTS reignites the bratty spirit of ‘good 4 u’ and other brilliant tracks like ‘brutal,’ amping up the snark in deliciously unhinged style while going straight for the jugular, offering wit galore.
One of the best examples of the this is recent single, ‘get him back!’ Recalling Best Damn Thing-era Avril with a side of Sleigh Bells, Rodrigo delivers her witty repartee in a disaffected drawl akin to Beck’s ‘Loser,’ flipping between both meanings of the phrase: One minute she wants to make lunch for her dirtbag ex, next she’s ready to deliver him an uppercut.
Previous single ‘bad idea right?’ also dabbles in the sing-speak, Rodrigo once again succumbing to the greasy charms of an ex, much to the disappointment of her friends. But can’t two people just reconnect?
‘all-american bitch’ (which may or may not be a critique of the Disney corporate machine) offers up ‘Just a Girl’-esque commentary with a modern twist. Obliterating the soft, insecure everygirl we first got to know on ‘driver’s license,’ the singer turns motifs of retro Americana, like the Kennedys, soda cans for hair rollers and even The Craft into snark fodder, giving us one of the best rock tracks of recent years. ‘ballad of a homeschooled girl’ is sludgy and equally disillusioned, Rodrigo bemoaning the sheltered adolescence that’s left her socially stunted (‘I talkеd to this hot guy, swore I was his type/Guess that he was akin' out with boys, like, the whole night’).
Even the ballads have improved. ‘lacy’ toys with sapphic lust as Rodrigo seemingly both loathes and lusts after the ‘dazzling starlet, Bardot incarnate’ and her wily ways, the envy consuming her.
‘vampire,’ on the other hand, makes a lot more sense in context in the wider context of the album. I wasn’t feeling it upon first listen (It just builds and builds, and then... nothing?), but there is beauty in its melodrama: The aching vocals, the loping strings, the hint of glam rock bravado before strangely pulling back.
The track also echoes Rodrigo’s sheltered upbringing, the singer taking her breakup with the so-called ‘famefucker’ pretty hard, which – let’s face it – was never gonna be an affair to remember. Why would you even bother to dedicate such a gutwrenching ballad to this fuccboi in the first place, it’s more than he deserves!
Piano finale, ‘teenage dream,’ however, does give us a full rock opera crescendo, Rodrigo looking to the future and already feeling weary at the thought of ageing out of the Disney demographic.
GUTS falls back on the schmaltz of SOUR at times, namely on the atmospheric 80s pop of ‘pretty isn’t pretty,’ which, although pretty, treads well-worn territory with its lament of impossible beauty standards. Some of the lyrics also feel cliched and even absurd (‘skin like puff pastry,’ really? Is Lacy really flaky? Is she gonna crumble to the touch?)
And yet, Rodrigo’s sophomore record is an incredible triumph for a young artist, self-assured with a clear creative vision, her songs more than just a bunch of throwback jams. She’s a rather astute rock fan, professing her love for Sleater-Kinney, Depeche Mode and Kathleen Hanna of Bikini Kill in recent interviews. Delightfully kooky sonic touches, like the sing-speak and the vocal yelps on ‘love is embarrassing’ also add to the album’s charm, the kind of fun idiosyncrasies a soulless conglomerate like Disney would’ve tried to iron out.
Where GUTS really excels, though, is its focus on defiant and unabashed female rage. Like Alanis, Fiona and Gwen before her, Rodrigo is snarling and seething, presenting a sardonic, suffocating and sometimes soul-crushing view of womanhood in the public eye. I can’t wait for when she calls the world bullshit at the next MTV Awards.
She also follows in the footsteps of other artists like Hayley Williams and Billie Eilish in recent years who’ve centered their work around the beauty of female rage, stemming from sexism, heartbreak and mistreatment in the industry.
‘I’ve experienced a lot of emotional turmoil over having all these feelings of rage and dissatisfaction that I felt like I couldn’t express, especially in my job,’ she recently told the Guardian. ‘I’ve always felt like: you can never admit it, be so grateful all the time, so many people want this position. And that causes a lot of repressed feelings. I’ve always struggled with wanting to be this perfect American girl and the reality of not feeling like that all the time.’
Funny, fierce and free of any ego, it takes a lot of guts to release a record like GUTS as your second album, at a time when rock and even pop feel so sanitised and dull. I guess I’m now fully on board the Olivia Rodrigo train, toot, toot...

Tuesday, March 14: Tower, “Hired Gun”
Tower emerged out of New York City with their own take on retro metal: instead of aiming to recreate ‘70s hard rock or ‘80s thrash, the group attempted an unholy fusion of both. As a result, “Hired Gun” played like vaguely bluesy speed metal, with Sarabeth Linden hollering over frantic yet groovy riffing and drums. The tune got off to a slow start, but once the amps were cranked up things got rolling, and Linden especially was a powerhouse. There was a touch of Night Demon in here, but Tower’s unrehearsed energy gave the band its own sound even as they were liberally borrowing from a multitude of predecessors.

Dreaming of Citra - Bitter (Indie Rock)

ah 10:34 am GMT+1. perfect time to rate each flstudio plugin ive ever used
rating is based on: personal subjectivity, effort it costs to use, and number of times ive actually used it
-non native instruments- (all these are free btw)
"Accordion VST" ★☆☆☆☆ self explanatory. got it around 1 or 2 years after i started making music for lofi songs. i couldnt get it to sound like i wanted n blend in well with the other instruments so i only used it a couple times. im thinking of trying it again messing around with filters since at the time of use i didnt know how to do that
"Revitar" ★★★★★ acoustic guitar plugin, sounds very folk. absolutely adore and also the very first plugin i got. since my version of flstudio didnt have any acoustic guitar plugins. can be tuned to sound like a shamisen <3 revitar loads poorly in my experience (just doesnt open on boot/loading it) but i always manage to get it to work eventually and its so good i forgive it.
"DSK Dynamic Guitars" ★★★☆☆ classical guitar plugin. got it i think like 5 years ago bc i wanted a guitar plugin that wasnt revitar. not perfect but does the job.
"DSK Overture" ★★★★★ iirc second plugin i got after revitar. it's a plugin for orchestra type instruments. i think i got it bc i wanted a violin. this plugin is amazing as it does many many instruments n i do use most of them. also some "instruments" are actually combo presets. you can set 4 of instruments to play at once (including the combos) which is ideal to mix them and get interesting sounds. absolute fave.
"EasternONE" ★☆☆☆☆ another versatile plugin i got early on when i started music. it does several instruments (though not as many as DSK Overture) among which: aud, accordion, santur, kaman, etc. kinda like accordion vst i used it a few times but not that much. also have a hard time blending the sounds with other instruments in a satisfying way. it does sound way more real and less digital then other plugins.
"NES VST" ★★★★☆ plugin for retro nintendo shape sounds: square, triangle, noise. perfect for that electronic sound and easily tunable <3 loses a star bc requires some work to fit effectively with other instruments.
EDIT: I FORGOT MINI ERHU!!!!!!!!! here it is:
"Mini Erhu" ★★★★★ self explanatory: erhu plugin. has several presets to instantly get different ways for it to sound. mixes very well with other instruments. absolutely perfect i love it so much. its just a sound i love. makes my music sound so weird since i mash it with other instruments in like electronical music etc and yea! idk how to make normal music! anyway its only dramatic downside is that the range is abysmal. otherwise so good.
-native instruments- (came with my FLstudio 12 version fruity edition - bc im fruity and its the shit tier of the paying versions.)
"Boobass" ★★★★☆ very classical bass that fits most modern sounding songs. a lil bland for my taste but perfect for not emphasizing bassline too much
"FLKeys" ★★★★★ // ★★★★☆ piano synth plugin. used to be perfect but in my version it broke so i can only use the shittier presets and i have to tune it every single time i use it. does not save presets. does not let me use my fave setting which was the grandpiano one </3 never got to work normally again.
EDIT: I also forgot FLSlayer OTL here it is
"FLSlayer" ★★★★☆ electric guitar plugin for rock or metal. very versatile for bass, rhythm guitar or solo guitar sound. it comes with a bunch of different "amps" also. just pretty good. dramatical downside is that it takes forever to tune to get the exact sound you want and mix it with other instruments.
-native filters-
"Fruity limiter" ★★★★☆ it's a limiter. always on by default and i never thought to turn it off. have no opinion on it.
"Fruity Reeverb 2" ★★★☆☆ a reverb plugin, fun to play around with to make the song sounds like its in a big orchestral room or something. i cannot be trusted to use it responsibly so ive stopped using it altogether lately.
"EQUO" ★★★★☆ another limiter, very versatile to give interesting shapes to sounds. i use it to get kind of a retro, desaturated sound. very much love.
there. hopefully this gives some insight about how i fully use FLStudio to almost 1% of its capacity. good nite.
also i did not elaborate on drumlines plugins thats bc i broadly dont care about drumline so much so i have way less of an opinion on them. i use most of the native plugins + DSK Overture for the drumline
#lodia sayings#love to ramble.#also drop which plugins you use if you want. n infodump about them. this is how i love to hear about new plugins.#if that isnt clear im a neophyte with 10 years of experience composing music.#music tag

Travel Notes for This Year
A while back, I posted about things that happened on our last trip that weren't in pictures. I thought it would be a good idea to do the same for the rest of the year. On our spring trip, we were going to drive along the coast of Lake Superior, but we got stuck in a surprise blizzard. The snow was beautiful, but stopping to take photos anywhere would mean possibly getting the car stuck. Our plan for the next day became "drive south until there's no snow."
There was a young black girl working the front desk at a hotel we stayed at in Illinois who was a full on weeaboo. When we checked in, she was so happy to show us the anime figures she drew on the marker board along a Japanese word for the day. She talked to us at length about tea and told us "I love your whole vibe. You need to be sure you keep it." If she was a little older, I would have asked her about her shoelaces. My SO went back to give her a couple tea bags from her personal stash.
My SO also gave an old lady some tea when she asked for some off the menu at this pizza place we ate at during the snow storm. I couldn't figure out why Axe Man Surplus kept coming up when we were looking for places to visit in Minneapolis, so we went to one. Everything has a silly sign attached to it, like "I can't even anything without my 10,000 RPM 2 amp electric motor" or "Stinky army surplus bags for when you want to store stuff in something green and stinky."
We ended up with season tickets to Silver Dollar City, so we went a couple times this year. I think the whole reason that it's regularly ranked as one of the top theme parks is because you can go there in the off season and walk onto almost any ride, except their most popular coasters. I only took one lizard picture, because it's not that interesting to look at.
The big news at the park is the closure and rebuilding of "Fire in the Hole," a literal theme park version of the battle between the baldknobbers. During the civil war, you'd be arrested for being in a town on the opposite side of the war. Pro-union people started dressing up in what look like KKK hoods with horned tassels on the sides that look like something straight out of a Rob Zombie film. They'd show up at the jail and break out whoever got captured. Then pro-confederacy people started doing the same thing. This all took place in the area between Branson, MO and Harrison, AR, AKA the most racist town in America. The ride tells the story, and a supposed fire set by the baldknobbers, in the most ridiculous, cheesy, outdated way possible. I'm kind of sad they're redoing it.
Also, their Christmas lights are really overrated.
On that note, Missouri with legalized weed is over the top. They have more billboard ads for dispensaries than any other state I've seen, and we kept running into people who stank from smoking joints. Have you ever been to Redmon's Candy Store ON WEED?
We got to go on a night hike through a prairie. The guide showed us how to identify buffalo wallows, and how to see spiders from long distances by reflecting light off of their eyes.
We met up with one of my old friends when she and her husband were in the area on a road trip. She lived in Green Bay about 15-20 years ago, and she said when she lived there, people acted like you were a simpleton if your were nice to people. When we've been up there in recent years, everyone has been super nice and talkative. It reminds me of how the West was 20 years ago. I'm not sure why there has been such a shift.
While we were in Green Bay, we ended up out in the country and stopped at a sub shop for dinner. The food was really good, and the owner talked to everyone at length about the music playing including the release date, who was in on the session, and where they recorded it. It turns out we happened upon Scott's Subs, which is a local institution famous for their subs and the owner's immense knowledge of rock 'n roll.
We also went to Zesty's Frozen Custard. It's retro 50s, but in a very 80s way, down to the pink/cyan/white/black color scheme and a broken arcade machine in the back. I wish I'd taken pictures.
We were warned by several people that we'd have to wait at least an hour to eat at Al Johnson's in Door County, but it was worth it. They're famous for having goats that climb on their roof to eat the grass. It was outside tourist season, and the goats weren't out, because it was too cold. We were able to walk right in, and eat with a handful of locals. The food was every bit as good as people said it was.
They Might Be Giants was one of the concerts of all time. I found out later that a couple friends were at the same concert, and they had the exact same experience. I feel like I could have just stayed home and listened to some of their studio recordings.
Howard Jones still sounds great, and so does Berlin. As for Culture Club, my SO said "Boy George's talents are waning, and he's covering it up by bringing new people into his act." If I was alone, I would have left after they played a couple songs.

Emergency Break - Hometown (Indie Rock)
