I’m gonna post the merch I bought in the morning. But incredible show as always. Best part was Chris and Rob checked in on the vending machine and I got to take a picture. Chris was all “This is my signature it looks like spaghetti.” Def worth spending money on this. Warning that patches were first thing to run out and it only takes card.

The Mosley Review: Gretel and Hansel
The thing about horror is that after a revolutionary turn in visual style and atmosphere has been discovered, you start to see others take on the trends. Its not a bad thing and its not always a good thing either. We all know the creepy folklore of Hansel and Gretel and how it ends, but what if someone decided to tell the darker version of the story in the way it was intended? There's a Netflix show called Disenchantment and they took a more twisted and sometimes comical approach to the story and it was fun and what I hoped to see. Now this film goes the darker road and decides to flip things around a bit. I liked that it separated itself from other versions and decided to keep things atmospheric and uneasy. I honestly was intrigued on the direction, but I also saw where it borrowed some elements of Robert Eggers’ film The Witch.
Sophia Lillis as Gretel was good and I liked her sense of caution everywhere she went. The story was more focused her growth and I liked that different approach. Sam Leakey was good as Hansel and I truly felt like he was a brother to Gretel. The fact that Gretel is older instead of the standard twin story, adds the classic older sibling protecting the younger sibling dynamic and I liked that twist. I do wish Gretel had an accent because it is very distracting that everyone else does while she doesn't. Alice Krige was perfectly wise and creepy as The Witch Holda. I loved the amount of patience, seduction and urgency in her voice and she makes every word exquisite to hear. Her scenes with Gretel deliver the depth of the story.
The score by Robin Coudert was cool, eerie and subtly set the tone. The visuals in the film are gorgeous and I liked that there was minimal visual effects. The film does take a minute to get into if you don't know that it is a bit of a slow burn. I did like that the film picked up momentum shortly after we find the witch’s house. As far as folklore adaptations go, I liked this modern and creepy interpretation. I wouldn't say that this is the most essential version to see, but it is the most ambitious take on the story.

The idea was to avoid the traditional musical schemes used in tales such as the use of symphonic orchestras, and therefore find a more original and specific color, using both warm and synthetic sounds with the predominance of the mellotron and the Moog synths.
I find it essential to create melodies that we can sing or whistle (themes, ritournelle...), as, in horror cinema, it is usually the opposite, where the music rather has a tendency toward structure and abstraction. For this project, which is a film about kids, it seemed important to have that.

Gretel and Hansel (2020): Witches, Woods, and Wonderful Film Making
Get thee behind me, Cupid, for my heart belongs to another! Just in time for February’s Valentine festivities comes Oz Perkins’ latest offering in Gretel and Hansel, a reimagining of the classic fairy tail by The Brothers Grimm. Perkins’ first got my attention with his fantastic directorial debut The Blackcoat’s Daughter. It was clear to me that Perkins knew how to direct and craft an engaging and unsettling film, but it did not prepare me for how much I enjoyed his latest effort!
A reimagining and expansion on the classic Grimm tale, Gretel and Hansel follows our titular characters as they are cast from their home in search of work and guardianship. Soon after, they run into the witch from our childhoods we have come to fear. Sophia Lillis (IT chapters 1 & 2) stars as Gretel, Sam Leakey (MotherFatherSon) stars as Hansel and Alice Krige stars as The Witch, Holda. Krige is menacing in her sweetness as the witch, and it wasn’t til sitting down to write my thoughts on the film that I realized she played the mother in Sleepwalkers, a staple of my childhood! Jessica De Gouw (Arrow) shares the role of Holda in certain scenes as well.
As mentioned, Krige does a phenomenal job as the witch, making your skin crawl on numerous occasions. I thoroughly enjoyed how creepy she was simply through good ole’ fashion actin’, and minimal (if hardly any) jump scares. Truly though, the standout for me was Lillis! First exploding onto the horror scene as Beverly Marsh in Andres Muschietti’s IT, Lillis was given wonderful material to act from thanks to the screenplay by Perkins and Rob Hayes. Lillis injects this role with a confidence reminiscent of Anya Taylor Joy in The VVitch, and a real sense of love and nurturing for her rough brother Hansel. We root for her and are pulled right into the sense of dread she feels when encountering the real, and at times surreal, world outside her home.
There are certain tales that lend themselves to being incredibly picturesque, and Gretel and Hansel is certainly one of them. Cinematographer Galo Olivares paints a wonderfully haunting landscape for us, filled with fog and dark silhouetted figures. I would be remised if I didn’t mention the spectacular use of color in this movie as well! The film paints scenes in moonlight blues and a fiery orange glow that play beautifuly off one another and also feel like a less stylized version of the blasts of color in Suspiria. Complementing the beautiful canvas is the score by Robin Coudert, who composes a score that wraps you up like a warm blanket, only to be ripped from you and leave you shivering when synths begin to swell and dance around you, crawling up your arms like goosebumps!
Perkins has once again given us a film that is at once nightmarish and yet incredibly beautiful. There are scenes that will surely disturb viewers, all the while pulling you closer and closer to the edge of your seat. Despite claustrophobic close ups, and the most off-putting stabilized shots that help to give you a sense of disorientation, I want to live in the world the director has created. I can almost smell the leaves burning in the distance, and the echoes of axes against trees bouncing in the forest around me. It is clear that Orion Studios did little to interfere with Perkins’ vision for this new take on the classic tale, and I’m all the more grateful for it. From a director who knows how to craft a dark tale all their own, Oz Perkins’ Gretel and Hansel is sure to become a Fall favorite and should fit in well with any witches collection!
