How quickly Bruce becomes physically violent (even against his loved ones) when someone he loves is in peril will never stop being fascinating to me.
#dick grayson#bruce wayne#I feel like a long dissertation about his relationship to trauma and loss could be written but#it’s late and I’m not gonna#but man there’s so much evidence that Bruce AGREES with Jason on some level-that only death will stop these people#but that there is no death that comes without pain and he can’t inflict the pain he felt as a child on someone else#therefore and for THAT REASON specifically killing people is wrong#so he can’t handle Jason being a killer specifically because Jason is now a person creating in people the kind of pain Bruce experienced as#a child#anyway just some thoughts lmaooo#not me going off in the tags#Robin (1993) 86#mine

Helena Bertinelli/Huntress Reading List/Completionist Guide
Helena Bertinelli is the Huntress of Prime Earth. She has existed as a character since 1989, and has appeared in her own series as well as multiple other series throughout the years. Most well known for being a Bird of Prey, she has a long history that tends to be hard to track. Instead of hunting down all of the issues, this guide has every one of her appearances in the attempt to follow her chronologically, but where her movements couldn’t be followed the natural passing of time was used to follow the story.
This is both a reading list and a completionist guide. This means there will be times when the issue only has a cameo of Helena. For a casual reader this list may be a little much. If that is the case click [here] for a shorter list that can get you started on Helena.
Moving onto Content Warnings.
There will be mentions and depictions of Sexual Assault of Adults and Minors, Slavery, PTSD, and Murder. These are some of the big Content Warnings. That being said let’s get started.

Cute intro to Steddie and just fun trauma bonding times.

When Steve applies for a summer camp per Dustin's request, he doesn’t expect to have the most interesting summer of his life. Featuring a sulky metalhead who hates Steve for no reason, eight kids set on driving Steve to an early grave, Robin Buckley’s ability to charm any girl she wants, and Steve’s bisexual disaster/dream/nightmare. But hey, that’s what summer camp is all about. Right?
This fic made me obsess over making summer camps in the sims with queer romances. This fic is good. Simple word but an incredible feat.
The One in Which a Time Loop is Fucking Exhausting. – badpancake

It’s the first time in a while that he doesn’t know what comes next. He’s dove into the water hundreds of times. Screamed as his flesh was torn apart, heard Master of Puppets in the distance and held back tears. Felt Max’s cold, small hand in his as she laid in the hospital bed. There are things that always happen, no matter how hard he tries: El doesn’t arrive in time. Eddie dies. Max is put in a coma. Steve fails. They lose. “Steve, how many loops have you been through?” His head is nodding, and his eyes are watery, and Eddie has approached him like a spooked animal. “I lost count.” AKA: The one where Steve Harrington is stuck in a time loop, and Eddie Munson is really fucking hard to save, or: fuck Volume 2, these bitches are in love.
I cried alot reading this fic. Yet it is the only Steddie fic I can really think of that gave me such a lasting impression that I find myself quoting it even to people who have no idea where it’s from.

‘Blood?’ Eddie says again. Eyes black but for the slice of iridescent white in the centre. His teeth are sharp, his hands are weapons and Steve thinks maybe he’s made a mistake doing this without telling Eddie first. Eddie’s focus lowers, it moves to his left hand which is… Oh fuck. It’s dripping blood onto the floor. ‘Shit,’ Steve says, takes a single step back, swallows. ‘Eddie, I’m so sorry, fuck.’ Eddie can’t seem to look away, can’t bring his ethereal gaze back up where it belongs. Steve thinks he should run, he should flee. A tiny part of him knows Eddie will chase him. Eddie will catch him, outrun him easily. It's more than a little fucked up how that thrills him.
I think where I went wrong is not seeing the teeny tiny pesky little tag that says this might awaken something in you I know if I were to have see it I wouldn’t be who I am today. Because holy fucking hell does this fic make something inside you hatch. Like what the fuck. Incredible writing I love a monster fucker.
Suspended Bridges - foresthearts

Tags: Alpha/Beta/Omega Dynamics, Omega Steve Harrington, Alpha Eddie Munson, Stancy is not endgame, Steve thinks he’s afraid of Eddie when he really just has a big fat crush, Oblivious Steve Harrington, mentions of Mpreg because omegaverse, Alternate Universe - Canon Divergence, Steve meets Eddie before s4, Slow Burn, Steve Harrington Has Bad Parents, Period-Typical Homophobia, Steve is an omega pretending to be an alpha, Enemies to Friends to Lovers, Unreliable Narrator, Tall Eddie, Dom/sub Undertones, Dom Eddie Munson, EMT Steve Harrington, Mileven will break up in this i am sorry, Mutual Pining, Family Dynamics, Redemption Arcs, Found Family, Misunderstandings, But hopefully not in an obnoxious way, Protective Eddie Munson
“Steve really needed to get his stupid thing he had with Munson under control. He struggled to find a word for it. It was like an anti-crush or something. The same awareness and panic that a crush brought, but not because he had feelings for the guy. Because of the opposite. Because any time he saw Munson, his heart kicked up in fear, his breathing got shallow, his whole body started to warm. Munson made him want to turn heel and run.” In which Steve has the opposite of the suspended bridge effect. (Featuring omega!Steve pretending to be an alpha and alpha!Eddie silently losing his mind.)
I think I can sum this fic up better in a scene. So you see me standing in the middle of my kitchen, hand over my mouth, eyes wide, as I read the big reveal and a certain metal heads reaction. My partner is astounded. I am shaking and blushing. Nothing is more magnificent or earth shatteringly embarrassing for all parties, real or otherwise, involved. Magnificent fic if I do say so myself.

I cringe every time I see Justice League International/America put as essential reading for Ted Kord/Blue Beetle 2. Like no, just cause it was long-running and popular and referenced by a bunch of things, since Ted was OOC the entire time in JLI that's not essential reading for him.
This is what I've read so far that gives a good feel for Ted Kord/Blue Beetle and what he's about where he's reasonably in character:
Captain Atom (1966-1967) #83-86- Ted's first comics. Look out for period typical sexism
Blue Beetle (1967-1968) #1-5- Ted's first solo comics. Look out for period typical sexism and racism. Ted's ok with killing bad guys/won't lose sleep about it if it happens. My girl, the MVP Tracey is here as Ted's gf, lab assistant, and confidant. Issue 5 has Vic Sage/The Question showing up in his civilian persona and helping out Blue Beetle.
Charlton Portfolio (1974) #1- Ted's civilian persona gets blamed for murder and the theft of an invisibility suit. Has the first mini-Bug/Snoopy for spying on shit. Tracey defends her man's honor and chews people out for bad-mouthing Ted.
Charlton Bullseye (1981) #1- Blue Beetle 2 and The Question team up officially as superheroes taking on a villain with many mooks and death traps. Also, this story implies that Ted has been Blue Beetle for at least 10 yrs. The Question calls Blue Beetle his friend and thinks they make a good team.
Crisis on Infinite Earths (1985) #1-3 [you can read more if you want but he's less prominent the further the Crisis goes on]- Ted's DC universe debut as part of the Earth 4 crew. This Ted has the Scarab and it can work as demon repellant and keep him from getting disintegrated from being touched by antimatter demons. Ted is cosmically important enough to be Earth 4's representative!
Secret Origins (1986) #2- Dan and Ted's origins are retold to fit in the DC universe. Ted does not have the Scarab. Red-head curly-haired Ted!
Blue Beetle (1986) #1-24- Ted's DC solo run. Red-head curly-haired Ted! Ted has no confidence for his secret identity which causes drama. His girlfriend/lab assistant is Melody Chase. In issues 5-7, Vic Sage/The Question teams up with Blue Beetle 2 for an arc. This run has crossovers with Legends (1986) and Mellinium (1988). Ted also starts appearing in Justice League International (1987)[boo, hiss, thankfully JLI didn't affect the plots of Ted's solo unlike the crossovers]
Showcase (1994) #2-4- Set in JLI era but Ted is pretty much himself. Ted fights cops and a city's local government b/c they stole his patents and they're fascists and he doesn't vibe with that.
L.A.W.: Living Assult Weapons (1999) #1-6- This series is racist trash propaganda. You mostly just want the first two and last two issues for Ted stuff. Ted decides to retire from being a superhero at the end of this series.
Birds of Prey (1999) #2, 4, 7, 10, 15, 19, 22-25, 33-37, 39-42- Ted makes a number of cameos initially via chatting online with Oracle as her friend. Then meeting up for an in-person date. Then coming out of retirement and joined the Birds of Prey on missions as support and a driver primarily. Then Ted gets diagnosed with a degenerative heart condition and retires again.
Robin (1993) #96- Ted teaming up with Tim Drake/Robin to track down a Jokerized werecat. Ted charms and scores a date with one of Dick Grason/Nightwing's civilian love interests.
Convergence: Blue Beetle (2015) #1-2- A return of pre-DC Ted! Set on Earth 4's Hub City kidnapped by some cosmic entity pitting heroes against each other with the survival of their cities on the line. Blue Beetle, The Question, and Captain Atom vs the Legion of Super-Heroes. My girl Tracey is here! As Ted's copilot!

Sception Reads Cass Cain #29
Robin (1993) #86 writer: Ed Brubaker art: Jacob & Arnold Pander
Birds of Prey (1999) #27 writer: Chuck Dixon pencils: N. Steven Harris
Catwoman (1993) #90 writer: Bronwyn Carlton pencils: Mike Lilly
Last time we looked at Batgirls sort of stand alone tie in to the Officer Down crossover, which ended with Cass abandoning her solo detective efforts on the case to meet up with the rest of the clan. This time we see her showing up as a side character in the crossover proper, already in progress. She doesn't have too big a role in things, though, so I think it's fair to cram her remaining Officer Down appearances into a single post.
Robin 86 covers the bat crew learning about Gordon being shot and collecting at the hospital to comfort Babs and start to plan. Batman gets real grumpy about it, attacking a random thug when he first hears about Gordon, hitting Dick when he tries to hold Bruce back, and then just brooding over Gordon's unconscious body while the rest are sent out to actually catch the shooter.
Cass is there for some of that, but not really saying or doing too much, so we're mostly looking at the art. Iirc, the Pander Bros are new artists to this retrospective. So how's their Cass?
Remember last time how I mentioned how depicting cass as a shadowy silhouette or trying to convey how she moves was more effective at making her spooky and intimidating than emphasizing the stitches in her mask or just giving her an angry face or whatever? This is the kind of stuff I was talking about there. Not enough to have stitches over the mouth, the Panders make her entire suit stitched together, like Catwoman in Batman Returns. They also drop her chunky yellow utility belt - and frequently also the yellow bat-symbol on her chest, though that might be a colorist issue.
I don't think they do a bad job exactly, apart from their super angular cartoony style not really clicking with me, but that's an aesthetic preference, not a judgment on quality. But the lack of facial expression in their Cass really hurts here.
I mean, at least there's some body language & physicality put into comforting Babs here, and it's nice that Babs looks to Cass in this one panel/moment here.
And I also like this bit, where Cass is the first to notice that Bruce is already in the room with Jim.
...
So Catwoman was seen at the scene where Gordon was shot, and they were feuding recently, so she's the prime suspect even if gun murder isn't really her style. The bat crew, minus Bruce, try to track her down, eventually leading to them interrupting a museum heist, but it turns out to be Harley Quinn running interference for Selina.
I like N. Steven Harris's general style more than the Panders, but he makes some weird decisions with Cass.
Combat Heels? Really?
This is a writing thing, so more on Dixon than Harris again, but...
has the memo not yet gotten around that Cass can talk now? She could just ask 'where is Catwoman'?
are we supposed to believe she can write the word 'woman' but not the word 'cat'? The cat part she has to draw?
This is kind of silly and ridiculous.
Mostly she's just kind of standing around in group shots in this one, and she looks fine.
The only real character beat Cass gets in this one is this extra and unnecessary kick at Harley Quinn at the end. Kind of mean spirited, which doesn't exactly fit Cass's usual character, but she's frustrated and her friend is hurting so I can't exactly say lashing out like this is exactly out of character either.
...
The last issue with Harley Quinn was mostly just spinning wheels to spread the crossover to one more title, Catwoman 90 actually advances the plot with the crew tracking Selina down, capturing her, and getting her version of the story - that another cop shot the commissioner.
Is Mike Lilly also a new artist for Cass? 3 for 3 new artists this week? I probably like his version of Batgirl the best out of the three today, but it does suffer noticeably from 'only knows how to draw one body type for female characters' syndrome.
It's a cute line I guess, but Selina has met Cass before. They had a whole little side adventure.
That's-not-Cass body measurements aside, Lilly does a great job of portraying just how athletic and acrobatic Cass is in just a few panels, how overwhelming her skill is in a physical confrontation. Selina pretty easily slipped past Dick, Tim, and Jean-Paul before this, but she just can't shake Cass.
Later on Cass is also the one who retrieves the shooter's gun from the vent Selina stowed it in:
Nice to see her and Jean-Paul working together in a nod to some of the No Man's Land stuff.
....
Overall three new artistic takes on Cass-Batgirl, and while I have my gripes about each none of them are bad exactly. It's nice that she's here for the crossover event, not left out entirely, and the writing teams remember enough of her character that she's making a show of consoling Barbara, or just naturally teaming up with Jean-Paul. It's also nice that she's treated as the most physically adept member of the bat team.
On the other hand, I'm not sure word has gotten around that she can talk now? The whole point of making her able to talk was so that she didn't fall into the vaguely racial trope of the silent faceless ninja, but that's still very much the role she's filling here.
I'd also mentioned earlier in discussing No Man's Land and more broadly the characterization of Bruce at the time kind of fell into a recurring rut. Something bad would happen that would remind Bruce of how little control he really had over the random injustice of the world, something that would put him back in the headspace of that little boy watching his parents murdered in front of him, and in response he would emotionally seize up and push his surrogate family away, only to later re-(re-re-re-)learn that he can't just do everything on his own and isolating himself only makes things worse and found family is good and he needs to rely on his friends, etc etc.
Officer Down is the start of another of these cycles, and while Gordon survives his injuries, he does retire. And Bruce's behavior towards the others while he's afraid Gordon will die is obnoxious enough that Alfred quits? To teach him a lesson by isolating him? Seems suspect, but whatever. Bruce just in general gets more grumpy and obnoxious for a while in a way that feels pretty repetitive with No Mans Land, a rut that continues to repeat going forward well after the writers seem to have tired of it.
And as a Cass fan it's kind of frustrating, because, again, her entire character concept was designed in dialog with exactly this version of Bruce, and the arc that it felt at the time she was building towards would have given the writers a natural way to write Bruce out of this rut.
It sort of writes itself - something happends that forces Bruce to acknowledge Cass's murder - maybe she finally breaks down and confesses it to him directly. He doesn't take it well, it leads to conflict between them, expanding out into conflict with the rest of the team. Eventually this conflict forces Bruce and Cass to confront and overcome their internalized guilt issues together, probably while physically fighting each other. The resolution of this forces Bruce to acknowledge that it's unprocessed guilt - not anger - that's been driving him to push everyone away. In offering Cass the forgiveness she needs he also learns to forgive himself, and comes out of the whole thing as more mellow and better-socially-adjusted batman, one who at the very least turns to his found family in a crisis instead of always reflexively pushing them away.
Bits and pieces of this narrative show up here and there going forward, but the whole arc never really coalesces. And while eventually there was a shift to a less grumpy and self-isolating Batman, I don't remember any particular catharsis bringing him to that point - though to be fair I wouldn't have seen it if it didn't involve Cass, so *shrug*.

Best of Steddie
5/?
previous / next
waiting for that feeling by manycoloureddays
Eddie sticks his head out the window, tongue hanging out like a dog. Steve’s hand leaves the wheel to yank him back into the car, and Eddie just cackles, howling at the moon in the pale evening sky, before letting himself be rescued. Not from certain death this time, just the high chance of bug swallowing.
“You’re a maniac,” Steve says, and it should be disgusting, the fondness dripping from his voice. But seven years is a long time, and Steve’s sappiness has yet to make him sick. In fact, he thinks he might have been infected by it. Turned into a big old sap himself.
[It's 1993. Eddie and Steve go back to Hawkins for Erica's graduation and make some plans for their own future]

“Hey, what is it called if I like people without boobies?” And that is – well that’s just not fair, is it? Because Robin had spent years fighting herself about it before she was willing to even entertain the idea that she was super not into boys, and even now she panics if some one so much as hints about a predilection that might not be super straight, and Steve is just looking at her with earnest eyes like one cuddle with a dude while some shirtless actor on the TV beat some commies up is all it took for him to come to terms with his sexuality and how is that fair?
“Do you want to tell me something?”
“Yeah, but answer the question first.”

It might be endearing, the way Steve looks sidelong at Eddie in that overprotective way that seems to sit steady on his shoulders, if it wasn’t also vaguely offensive, but Max heaves out a breath as she places her headphones back on her ears and clicks Bowie back to play.
“Fucking two of you now, can’t escape it,” she mutters under her breath, turns on her heel, and trudges away from them both.
Steve makes a face where he stands at his car.
Eddie waggles his fingers at him with a sly smile until he rolls his eyes, slips back into the front seat, and drives away.

A parallel look at the time leading up to Spring Break of ‘86 and everything that happens after Eddie Munson watches his own dying body be dragged through a gate, leaving the rest of him trapped in the Upside Down. Alone. Or mostly.

The last thing Eddie thinks as he draws his final breath is that Henderson is gonna need a shit ton of therapy.
But then, Eddie wakes up, gasping for air, and miraculously, he's being rescued.
Now he has to figure out how to live.

Great question!
Prequel: JLA: World Without Grownups #1-2
Part One: Young Justice Vol 1, #44
Part Two: Impulse #85
Part Three: Robin (1993) #101
Part Four: Superboy (1994) #99
Part Five: Young Justice Vol 1, #45
Epilogue: Impulse #86-87
I reread Strange Origins because I have brain rot and I will never shut up about how fantastic Bart is in it.
Here's the thing: Bedlam, the all powerful magic god child, kidnapped Bart because he needed to borrow Bart's powers to change reality and time. Which... Let that one sink in for a moment.
Bedlam put Bart in a magic cube and kept hitting him with a massive mallet to force Bart into making scouts. Bedlam would then mind control the scouts and send them on their merry way through the timeline to mess with important historical events.
Bart was understandably not happy about this. To the point that Bart willingly made a scout. And that's... That was not a light decision for him. Bart had sworn off creating scouts because the last time one had died. Bart experienced the scout's death and it put him into a coma and traumatized him to the point that he retired from being a hero entirely. So Bart making the call to create a scout? That's a massive decision for him.
But here's the thing, Bart didn't remember this (probably because of head trauma from being wacked so many times) but he'd already made that call when Bedlam captured him. He had sent off an SOS scout to his team. Unfortunately, the timeline changes had already happened so his team never got his SOS.
Because his team didn't exist.
Bart's scouts had been hard at work changing the timeline and preventing the heroes of Young Justice from existing as we know them today. Tim never became Robin, Conner was created without powers, Cassie became the follower of a wine god, ect.
After figuring out what's going on from his scout, Bart tricks Bedlam's magic and escapes. (The magic cube was created to keep Impulse in, not Kid Flash)
Bart tracks down Tim, who is just a regular old civilian at this point, and tries to explain the situation to him. As you can see in the above panel, Bart is still incredibly traumatized about the scouts and is terrified to reabsorb them. Tim tells him to suck it up and do it anyway. However, Bart falls over in pain before he can actually do it. One of his scouts was near death and he could feel it. So Bart ran off, in extreme pain and completely terrified, but determined to save his scout.
The dying scout was one who had managed to track down Kon. Now, this scout was weak, as were all of Bart's scouts at this point, but a clone of Doomsday was accelerating the scout's death by a lot. Bart fought him off but barely. See, there were thousands of scouts and Bart's powers couldn't sustain them all. They were all dying and it wasn't just the scouts who were affected. Bart himself was dying.
But, even knowing that, Bart still didn't want to reabsorb them. He couldn't do it again. Not after what had happened last time.
Depowered (basically human) Kon made him realize that he had to do it despite his fear. Bart realized that he was the only 'good guy' hero left (the girls were antiheroes and the boys were just regular teens). He had to reabsorb the scouts, even if it killed him.
It's notable that Bart actually said that he wasn't okay when asked. Speedsters don't do that. If a speedster says they're feeling 'bad but it's fine' that means they're dying. Actually, after this, every time Bart makes a scout he smiles and makes a sarcastic quip while screaming in pain inside his head. Bart's thought bubbles in this event were... wow.
So yeah, Bart tracks down everyone and brings them all to Bedlam's castle. He fills them in on the situation and he makes the plan of attack. Then while they are fighting Bedlam, Bart sends off one last scout to go stop Bedlam before he even gets his powers. You'll notice that at this point Bart is completely out of it. He's in rough shape. He thinks he's going to die. The 'goner' line might seem like a joke but Bart is genuinely thrilled and shocked in the end that he didn't die.
Bart's scout does stop Bedlam in the past and everything goes back to normal. Except for Bart who inherited Bedlam's powers.
This entire arc is bonkers though. Bedlam kidnapping Bart to use his powers, Bart doing 3000 Flashpoints under mind control, Bart being forced to make 3000 scouts and having to grapple with his trauma, Bart dying and not telling anyone about it, Bart being the only goddamn braincell in the group and getting everyone together and making the plan, Bart being the one to fix everything in the end, Bart getting god powers from it, ect. It's just... one of the best arcs ever. Bart carried the villain and he carried the team. Bart carried the entire goddamn plot. He was literally the only one doing anything in this entire thing.

Robin (1993) #86, Dick and Bruce
[Image description: Four panels of Dick Grayson and Bruce Wayne. The first three are equal sized vertical rectangles. In the first, Dick as Nightwing (fingerstripes look) has his arms around Bruce as Batman’s neck, while Dick says, “Stop it! Let him go!” Bruce is frowning.
In the second panel, Bruce says, “little worms...maggots..” while Dick looks shocked saying, “What are you doing?!” with his arms still around Bruce’s neck.
In the third panel, Bruce throws Dick through the air while yelling, “Get off me!” A woman lays on the ground in shock.
In the last panel, Dick lays on the ground, wiping blood off his mouth with his hand. TVs on a news channel lay in the background, having fallen over when Dick rammed into them.]
[Image description: A small panel of Barbara Gordon and Dick Grayson (as Nightwing) talking. Cass Cain (as Batgirl) is in the background. Babs is saying, “What happened to your face?”
Dick replies, “Uh...nothing, just let one get past my defenses, I guess... ...how is he?”]
To make matters even worse, later in the issue Dick covers up for Bruce’s abuse!
