BALIOC'S READING LIST, 2024 EDITION
This list counts only published books, consumed in published-book format, that I read for the first time and finished. No rereads, nothing abandoned halfway through, no Internet detritus of any kind, etc. Also no children’s picture books.
(There were still so many children's picture books.)
(I've relaxed my standards a bit for this year. I've counted two graphic novels, and one text so short that it's basically just an illustrated short story. This doesn't particularly feel like cheating, and it doesn't seem to be lowering my standards generally. Next year, I may decide to count texts read on the Internet, so long as they're genuinely substantive in some way; we'll see.)

**********
This year was a lot better than it looks. I swear.
...the numbers are real bad, I know. 52 is the absolute bottom edge of "respectable" for a year's total-books-read count, for me, and no fewer than 11 of those were part of the same silly historical-mystery series. 7 is well below the absolute bottom edge of "respectable" for the nonfiction count.
But, given how shamefully little reading there was overall, there was a surprising amount of serious high-quality stuff with lasting value. Chinese Buddhism, Aztecs, and Weavers, Scribes, and Kings are all exactly what I want nonfiction tomes to be: each one left me with a sense that I understood a particular chunk of the world much better than I had before. I think any one of those three probably caused me to feel more educated than some entire years' worth of nonfiction reading. And on the fiction front, there was just a lot of excellence. Books like Pilgermann and The Saint of Bright Doors are flawed but also possessed of genuine literary greatness. Books like Of Ghosts and Goblins and the Seven Citadels novels are light-weight, but light-weight in the way that a faerie-gossamer cloak is light-weight; they possess genuine beauty that moves them into the realm of the transcendent. Even the usual genre-fiction filler stuff had a lot of semiprecious gems.
I'm still alarmingly bad at getting any reading at all done when I'm working on a serious writing project. I should figure out what I can do about that. Possibly it's time to bite the bullet and start listening to audiobooks when I drive.

Taylor Mansion-Lakehurst
193 Bratenahl Rd.
Bratenahl , OH
James and Elizabeth Fitch purchased 55-acres from George and Hanna Freeman on February 13, 1852. The estate was named “Brookwood” and consisted of their home plus five outbuildings.   Henry and Eliza Clark acquired 20 acres on the Fitch property's western portion on June 24, 1862. They built a country place at the foot of Doan Street (East 105th Street then Bratenahl Road) in 1862.  It included an ornate Federal Italianate style mansion, a carriage house, stables, and even a water tower. The landscape featured a winding driveway through a wooded area, vast green spaces, and lush gardens. The house included gaily striped awnings and vaguely Italianate ornamentation.  Frederick and Mary Louise Kinsman acquired the estate from Eliza Clark on May 10, 1896. Joseph Marvin acquired the property on June 18, 1888.
Frank and Sarah Robison acquired the twenty-acre property on November 8, 1893. They demolished the Clark home to make room to build their new home. The grand view of the lake from three sides of the house likely closed the deal.  The estate, including a thirty-four room home, a water tower, a carriage house, and a stable, was among the largest in the area. California privet hedges planted in front of the carriage house and stable and along the lake's bank gave the name Villa Hedges. The gracious home, with its beautiful gardens, provided an ideal setting for entertaining friends and associates.
Sophia Strong Taylor acquired Villa Hedges on October 19, 1915. The estate had been reduced to 19 acres but was still the largest parcel of property in the area. Mrs. Taylor razed the Robison home and commissioned Charles Sumner Schneider to design her 26-room home completed in 1918. Lakehurst was an elegant example of Georgian Revival architecture accented with Neo-Adamesque ornamentation. The façade contained seven bays with double-hung six-over-six windows and departed from symmetry with the substitution of a sizeable round-head window in one bay to illuminate a staircase and the addition of a cameo window in another bay. The doorway on the south elevation contained a six-panel door with tracery fanlight and half-length sidelights. Sophia Taylor constructed an enormous lily pond, a peacock house, and excellent docking facilities. White peacocks roamed her eighteen-acre lawn.
Edward Francis Hoban, sixth Catholic bishop of Cleveland, acquired Lakehurst on July 7, 1943, through the efforts of Eleanor Strong, Sophia Taylor’s sister-in-law, after the property had languished for seven years. The Bishop added a chapel connected to the west elevation of the main house. The chapel had stained-glass windows from 18th century France, a multi-colored marble floor laid in a geometric pattern, paneled walls painted with floral motifs, and a ceiling mural above the altar. Hoban also constructed a one-hole golf course to indulge his love for playing golf.  Bishop Clarence G. Issenmann was transferred to Cleveland and lived on the estate after Bishop Hoban became ill.
Sea Gull Inc., represented by attorney Donald D. Smith, acquired the property from James Hickey, Cleveland's bishop, on February 9, 1978. Smith, one of eight bidders, planned to put together a group to finance the remainder to develop the area possibly into a townhouse complex. Lakehurst was listed in the National Register of Historic Places on July 10, 1986.   John J. Carney and Betty Jane Kazen acquired the estate from Sea Gull Inc. on December 28, 1987.
Carney and architect Robert Corna made a presentation to preserve the Lakehurst mansion by making it a party center and adding a swimming pool and tennis courts for the use of all residents. The plan had duplex townhouses placed in a staggered arrangement, many with a lake view. The plan also included a seven-story mid-rise building situated next to the mansion for 161 living units. The Planning Commission rejected the plan.  John Ferchill and Mike Fratello submitted approved plans for a Lakehurst Planned Residential Development in 1998. The mansion renovation cost proved to be prohibitive, and they demolished the historic mansion in 1999, transforming Lakehurst into a gated community (Lakehurst Drive) of 18 single-family homes off Bratenahl Road in Bratenahl, Ohio.  The Taylor Mansion is still listed on the National Register of Historic Places and has not yet been removed, despite its destruction.

Robert Hoban takes Time 4 Hemp
youtube
A Legal Trailblazer and Strategic Force in the Global Cannabis Industry
In the fight to end hemp prohibition and advance the legalization of medical cannabis, few figures have left as profound a mark as Bob Hoban. A pioneering attorney, industry strategist, and policy architect, Hoban has been instrumental in shaping the modern cannabis landscape. His expertise spans legal advocacy, international consulting, and business development, making him a trusted leader among Fortune 1000 companies, government entities, and entrepreneurs in the hemp and marijuana sectors.
Pioneering the Legalization Movement
Bob Hoban’s impact on the cannabis industry is impossible to overstate. As an attorney and strategic advisor at Clark Hill PLC, he led the firm’s Cannabis Industry Group to global prominence. Widely credited with establishing the category of "cannabis attorneys," Hoban has structured mergers and acquisitions (M&A) transactions worth over $1 billion, helping to commercialize and legitimize the industry on a massive scale.
His legal acumen was pivotal in creating the dispensary system in multiple U.S. states, providing a regulatory framework that many states still use today. Beyond domestic borders, he has advised over 30 countries on cannabis legislation, assisting in the development of progressive policies that facilitate the growth of legal cannabis and industrial hemp markets worldwide.
Expanding the Global Cannabis Industry
Beyond his legal work, Bob Hoban has played a crucial role in the strategic expansion of the hemp and cannabis industries. As the founder of Gateway Proven Strategies, an international cannabis consultancy, he has helped shape the policies and markets that drive economic opportunities in hemp-derived products, medical cannabis, and industrial hemp production. His expertise in regulatory affairs and market entry strategies has positioned him as a trusted advisor for businesses navigating the complexities of cannabis legalization.
Recognized as one of Forbes’ Top 42 Most Influential People in Cannabis, Hoban continues to push for the normalization and growth of cannabis markets worldwide. His thought leadership extends through his Forbes columns, where he identifies industry trends and provides in-depth analysis on regulatory developments and market dynamics.
Educating the Next Generation of Cannabis Advocates
Hoban’s contributions to the cannabis industry go beyond legal strategy and policy reform—he is also an educator dedicated to fostering knowledge and advocacy. He has served as a professor of cannabis law, policy, and markets at institutions such as the University of Denver, UNLV, the University of Vermont, and Roanoke College. Through his lectures and mentorship, he equips students and professionals with the legal and business expertise needed to drive the industry forward.
Chairman of Greenbridge Proven Strategies (GPS)
Currently, Hoban serves as Chairman of Greenbridge Proven Strategies (GPS), where he collaborates with corporations, trade groups, and nonprofits to engage with policymakers and government agencies. His ability to bridge the gap between regulatory frameworks and industry needs has been instrumental in shaping laws that benefit both businesses and consumers.
Hoban has worked closely with government entities across the United States, Europe, Latin America, and Asia, advocating for regulatory frameworks that allow for sustainable and ethical cannabis commerce. His participation in national and state cannabis policy task forces has been essential in advancing legislation that supports industrial hemp, medical cannabis, and recreational marijuana use.
Legacy and Future Vision
With nearly two decades of advocacy, legal innovation, and industry leadership, Bob Hoban has solidified his place as one of the most influential figures in global cannabis policy and business strategy. His efforts have laid the foundation for a thriving legal cannabis market, and as the movement for full legalization gains momentum, his influence continues to shape the future of hemp and cannabis industries worldwide.
As an activist and thought leader, Bob Hoban’s work serves as an inspiration to those fighting to end industrial hemp prohibition and legalize medical cannabis. His unwavering commitment to progress ensures that the cannabis movement will continue to grow, breaking down barriers and creating new opportunities for businesses, consumers, and policymakers alike.

“What’s Dope, Anyway? Scotch and Morphine?” Toronto Star. February 18, 1920. Page 05. ---- Young Man Addicted to Latter Gets Five Months for False Pretences. --- HUBBY SICK, WIFE CAME --- To Answer Inspector’s Charge That a Chicken Had Been Killed in Backyard. --- What is dope?
According to Counsel Thomas O’Connor, ‘dope’ had been responsible to some extent for Robert Carmichael’s irregular way of living. Carmichael amended his lawyer’s opinion. ‘It was Scotch whiskey and morphine,’ said Carmichael. Three charges of false pretences confronted Carmichael, who pleaded guilty. Mr. Corley devoted a few words to Carmichael: ‘He has been loafing about, having a high old time at the expense of others. Bad cheques involve about $550.’ Col. Denison sentenced Carmichael to five months. Mr. Corley: ‘Five months will not cure him of dope.’ But the five months stood. Stanley Ringland, charged with forgery, was remanded again, and cash bail of $1,000 was renewed. Thomas Quinn, accused of stealing an overcoat, was remanded until Mr. Corley could see the 17-year-old boy’s father. A certain name was called. It belonged to a man of 89. The charge was ‘theft of a bottle of milk.’ Up jumped Mr. Corley from his chair. ‘Such an old man shall not be brought to the bar on any such charge,’ declared the Crown Attorney. So the case was withdrawn. O.T.A. Has Its Points. ‘Doesn’t he know whether he is guilty or not guilty?’ asked Col. Denison when Austin Regan searched in vain for his lawyer, who was ill. ‘He’s charged with B.O.T.A.,’ explained Mr. Corley, ‘and he may want a lawyer. The Ontario Temperance Act has points, you know. A decision of your Worship’s was reversed yesterday by Judge Coatsworth. I still think that you were right, however.’ ‘Undoubtedly,’ assented Col. Denison.
‘There was new evidence,’ added a lawyer. Col. Denison: ‘And couldn’t the judge see through iit?’ ‘It was entirely new, your Worship. It did not come before you.’ The Regan case was enlarged. The vagrancy charge against Charles O’Brien was withdrawn. On the charge of obtaining $75 by false pretences from the Toronto and York Patriotic Association. O’Brien went to a jury. Mr. Corley was willing to grant bail at $500. Dislikes the Nighthawk. Of human birds, Magistrate Cohen dislikes the nighthawk, particularly when the latter is young. Young Ernest and Cecil Connors, alleged vagrants, had been remanded by Mr. Cohen. ‘How have these boys been behaving?’ Mr. Cohen asked. The report was favorable. ‘Adjourned till called on,’ said Mr. Cohen, who enjoys a reputation for common sense and knowledge of human nature. ‘Now, boys, go to work, and don’t stay out at night. If you come back, it will not be the first time.’ Max Katz didn’t appear when Mrs. Heban, an inspector charged him with having had a chicken killed in the rear of his grocery on Dundas street. Mrs. Katz was present. ‘Where is Katz?’ asked Mr. Cohen. ‘He is sick,’ answered Mrs. Katz. Lest the court should worry over Mr. Katz’s condition. Mrs. Hoban reported that she had seen Mr. Katz in the act of selling groceries that very morning. Thus relieved of anxiety, Magistrate Cohen fined Mr. Katz $10. There are places where chickens may be slaughtered within the law, but the Katz premises are not on the list, hence to-day’s conviction. ‘Scat!’ say the authorities to the chicken offence of one Katz. Man From Balkans. Demiter Shaldeff, an elderly Macedonian, fell ill. A doctor gave him a liquor prescription. Shaldeff filled it, and then proceeded to fill himself. While full or almost so, he entered a store. There, under the baneful complication of ‘flu’ and whiskey, he stole a blouse and a bottle of olives. This distressing history was revealed by N. Shonteff, interpreter for the Balkan States. Shaldeff, sick, weak and white, .... [fragment]
