Eurovision 2003 - Number 15 - Wilki - "Here I Am"

Wilki are Wolves in their second incarnation. The band, founded by Robert Gawliński in the early 1990s but spilt shortly afterwards. Their short early life included tragedy, with the unexpected and early death of their bassist Adam Żwirski, nevertheless their first two albums both went platinum in Poland. Robert went solo for another half decade before reforming the band and resuming touring. It's been tough.

Which brings them to 2003 and Here I Am. It's a slow affirmation of survival, of a love continuing under siege, a cry for all the pain to stop and to go back to how things were. The verses are shambling, as Robert's voice works through his feelings without much impetus to get anywhere really. Then the guitars start getting the message and it builds into the grand, synth augmented chorus that's ecstatically wallowing in the light of his particular angel.

The entire thing feels like culmination of a life-long struggle. A finishing line reached, even if things are never going to be how they were. In it's own muted way, it's glorious while accepting tragedy and beginning to heal. A watery light at the end of a tunnel. It reached the top of the Polish 30 ton list list and managed to finish 2nd overall at Krajowe Eliminacje 2003

It was both Wilki and Robert's only try for Eurovision, but they went on to become one of Polish rock's staples, living a stately existence in the Polish rock firmament. They're still going today (although there was another two-year long split in 2009). In those years they've had numerous singles, including loads of number 1s, and many albums. They've recorded a song for the Polish football team. They've had their own MTV Unplugged session. They're YouTube music as tens of millions of views per song.

Hi! I saw you liked my Republika post and since your bio says you are a fan I gotta ask: What else of Rebulika would you recommend to someone whose favorite album is Masakra? (I listened to Marzeń once or twice but I don't remember too much from it) Also if you got any other recommendations for Polish Post-Punk or Punk, especially newer stuff please send them my way :)

Hi hi !! :DD So glad you asked as I don’t get to talk about Republika often !

So, Masakra is a bit different in comparison to their other albums, but because it’s New Wave I would definitely recommend their early works. As their earlier ones do fall right into the Post-Punk / New Wave genre.

Albums in particular would be —

82 -> 85

I’d recommend 82 -> 85 first as it has some of their most well known songs. I’d say would be a good starting point :)

Anyway for other Polish Post-Punk / Punk bands I’d recommend these —

Siekiera (1984 would be their punk era and 1985 and onward would be their new wave era)
