Trump’s Volunteers: ‘Beautiful Ladies’ From a Secretive Evangelical Church In Spindale, NC
Robert Draper and Michael Gold at NYT:
Former President Donald J. Trump has gruesome rhetorical staples he likes to deploy at his political rallies, including homicidal sharks, bird-killing windmills and Hannibal Lecter. Amid the litany, one less morbid aside tends to escape notice. “Those beautiful ladies from North Carolina are here again without their husbands,” Mr. Trump observed at a rally in Mosinee, Wis., on Sept. 9, veering off from a rant about the 2020 election. He gestured toward the rafters and a row of a dozen impeccably coifed women in brightly colored pantsuits, as if they had wandered in from an Easter gala. The women waved and blew kisses at the former president, who speculated that the women had attended “249 or something” rallies. “That means they have money,” he said approvingly. Mr. Trump has called out the self-described “North Carolina Girls” at rallies this year in Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Georgia, Arizona and South Carolina, in addition to events in their native state. But the women are unusual in ways beyond their ubiquity.
All are members of an evangelical charismatic Christian church in the tiny town of Spindale (population 4,238) in western North Carolina. The church, Word of Faith Fellowship, has for decades drawn controversy over its cultish insularity and its treatment of children and adults who have been judged by church leaders to be sinners. As church leaders have acknowledged in legal proceedings, Word of Faith relies on a practice known as “strong” or “blasting” prayer. Former church members have described the entire congregation surrounding and screaming at a single member for as long as an hour in an effort to expunge the evil from the person. Church officials say this characterization is overstated. Beginning with a report by the TV news journal “Inside Edition” in 1995 and culminating in an investigative series by two Associated Press reporters that would become a book in 2020, numerous former church members have come forward and described being physically assaulted during such prayers.
In an interview, Matthew Fenner, a former congregant who told the A.P. reporters that he was 19 when he was blasted and beaten by five church members in 2013 for being gay, said that Word of Faith rationalized its brutal treatment of him and others. “To them, I wasn’t being abused,” Mr. Fenner said. “I was being saved and delivered.”
Word of Faith has consistently disputed these claims. As one of the members who frequently volunteers at Trump rallies, Hannah Davies, said in a testimonial posted on the church’s website: “I want everyone to know this prayer is not abusive, no one is hit, no one is punched, no one is screamed at. This prayer is full of love and freedom.” None of the church’s history comes up at Mr. Trump’s rallies, and the former president has never once mentioned the church the North Carolina women belong to. The women serve as a trusted volunteer arm of the campaign’s advance team. They arrive well before the beginning of a Trump event, set up chairs in the V.I.P. section, run the media sign-in table and disassemble the V.I.P. section after the rally is over. Contrary to Mr. Trump’s assertion that the women attend the rallies without their spouses, in recent months their husbands have been seen distributing floor passes and policing the V.I.P. areas, all of them in blue long-sleeved shirts with “Team Trump” on the back and their first initial and last name stenciled on their shirt pockets.
[...] In the statement, Mr. Farmer said that his wife, Andrea Farmer, is among the volunteers. Others represent the upper echelon of the church’s hierarchy, beginning with the co-founders of the church, Jane and Sam Whaley. Robin Webster, their daughter and a longtime teacher in the church’s K-through-12 private school, is also a volunteer, as is the church’s associate minister, Kim Waites. Word of Faith is in Rutherford County, where the Republican Party chairman, Bryson Smith, a church member, encouraged others to travel to Washington on Jan. 6, 2021, writing on social media: “Calling all patriots! Our country needs you! The time is now!” [...]
Republicans say the church constitutes a formidable voting bloc in the 10th Congressional District, which includes all of Rutherford County. During the 2020 Republican primary, the incumbent congressman, Representative Patrick McHenry, carried every precinct in the district except for the church’s home in Spindale — a likely consequence, Republicans said, of Mr. McHenry’s support for church closings during the first months of the Covid pandemic, which Word of Faith initially resisted.
A group of women volunteers, usually not occupied alongside their husbands, travel to every Donald Trump rally.
They come from the cultic Word Of Faith Fellowship in Spindale, North Carolina.

This is what ticker tape really looked like, March 26, 1942. The stuff pouring out of the machine for a clerk at Merrill, Lynch, Pierce, Fenner, and Beane is like something out of a cartoon—I can see it going and going until it fills up the room.

Race under Reconstruction in German Cinema: Robert Stemmle's Toxi
Race under Reconstruction in German Cinema: Robert Stemmle's Toxi
Race Under Reconstruction in German Cinema investigates postwar racial formations via a pivotal West German film by one of the most popular and prolific directors of the era.
The release of Robert Stemmle's Toxi (1952) coincided with the enrolment in West German schools of the first five hundred Afro-German children fathered by African-American occupation soldiers.
The didactic plot traces the ideological conflicts that arise among members of a patrician family when they encounter an Afro-German child seeking adoption, herein broaching issues of integration at a time when the American civil rights movement was gaining momentum and encountering violent resistance.
Perceptions of 'Blackness' in Toxi demonstrate continuities with those prevailing in Wilhelmine Germany, but also signal the influence of American social science discourse and tropes originating in icons of American popular culture, such as Uncle Tom's Cabin, Birth of a Nation, and several Shirley Temple films.
By applying a Cultural Studies approach to individual film sequences, publicity photos, and press reviews, Angelica Fenner relates West German discourses around race and integration to emerging economic and political anxieties, class antagonism, and the reinstatement of conventional gender roles.
The film Toxi is now available on DVD from the DEFA Film Library.

John Garfield, Pedro Armendáriz, and Jennifer Jones in We Were Strangers (John Huston, 1949)
Cast: Jennifer Jones, John Garfield, Pedro Amendáriz, Gilbert Roland, Ramon Novarro, Wally Cassell, David Bond, José Pérez, Morris Ankrum. Screenplay: Peter Viertel, John Huston, based on a novel by Robert Sylvester. Cinematography: Russell Metty. Art direction: Cary Odell. Film editing: Al Clark. Music: George Antheil.
Fidel Castro came to power in 1959, ten years after We Were Strangers, which deals with an earlier Cuban revolution, was made. Castro's own revolution is probably why this film, despite its major director and stars, is so little known. It was never revived after its initial showing, and didn't become available on video until 2005 despite the reputation of its director, John Huston. It's a fairly scathing look at the failure of the United States to support the overthrow of the Machado dictatorship in 1933. John Garfield plays Tony Fenner, a Cuban-born American who works with the underground revolutionaries to overthrow Machado. He comes up with a rather complicated plot to tunnel into the Colón Cemetery and plant a bomb that will kill the regime's leaders. He enlists a group who have no previous ties with one another, including China Valdés (Jennifer Jones), a bank clerk whose brother was killed by the Havana police chief, Armando Aréte (Pedro Armendáriz), and who lives in a house across the street from the cemetery. The plan is to assassinate a high-ranking member of the regime and detonate the bomb when the dignitaries gather for his funeral. But Fenner's plan is just a little too complicated, and things go awry. It's a curious film to be made just as the red scare was heating up in Washington and Hollywood, for the script by Peter Viertel and director John Huston has no scruples about portraying the violent revolutionaries as heroic. The revolutionaries even countenance the collateral damage of killing innocent people at the funeral, although one of their company has serious reservations about it and, worn down by the hard work of tunneling, goes mad. Garfield, who would soon be threatened with blacklisting as a leftist, gives a typically intense performance, and Jones, though miscast, does a passable imitation of a determined Cuban revolutionary. Armendáriz, whom Hollywood often relegated to Latino sidekick roles, is a fine, sinister villain. Gilbert Roland, as a singing, wisecracking member of the revolutionary team, provides what levity the film possesses, and Ramon Novarro has a cameo as the chief who authorizes Fenner's plan. There's some obvious use of rear projection in which the actors are superimposed against scenes actually filmed in Havana, but Russell Metty's cinematography is mostly quite effective.

Iru!
Possibly the most obscure horror title to grace the PlayStation, …Iru! Is a low-budget first-person Lovecraftian adventure from Soft Machine. The game’s title itself has no easy expression in English; “iru (いる) ” denotes the presence of a living being, so the closest translation is probably “…It’s here!” While unintentional, it’s very fitting for a work so tightly entwined with Lovecraft to boast a title that actively defies translation.

November 8: Favorite Roles [*]
In the previous post, I named my top 7 favorite Robert Vaughn characters with a brief explanation of their background and this post will explain more about them and the reasons why they made my list. Please bare in mind that I haven't seen his entire filmography yet...
1) The Man from U.N.C.L.E. - Napoleon Solo Napoleon Solo is an agent of Section II: Operations and Enforcement who works alongside his friend/partner, Illya Kuryakin (David McCallum) and wears a badge with the number eleven (the badge originally was the Roman numeral II but after the series switched to color, Robert Vaughn picked the number '11' on accident and became his official number through the rest of the show, including the 1983 reunion movie). Unlike his partner, he rarely loses his temper and tries to be an optimist even in the most intense situations. The agent is laid-back, sociable and is a "serial womanizer" but he believes women that are created equal and treats them with respect as well as affection. He has a very high sense of style and his looks do not change during the first three years but in the final season, he wears double-breasted suits and his hair is quite longer. The character is one of my top favorites because his personality is completely different from 007 and he tries to keep a positive mind through any dangerous situation. Robert had stated in one of his interviews that he was playing himself and some aspects of his personality is obvious in a lot of the episodes. He has the personality of a class act and true gentleman who will treat you with the utmost respect. His positivity is something that attracted me to both Napoleon and Robert because I try to keep a positive mind despite moments of anxiety triggers which takes an emotional toll on you. I am still learning more about the character but he definitely is at the top of my list.
2) The A-Team - General Hunt Stockwell General Hunt Stockwell is the newest boss of the A-Team who is responsible for blackmailing the team into doing an unknown number of unspecified missions in return for granting a full pardon for their crimes. He has a cold and manipulative personality, rarely showing or displaying emotion but admits that he has respect for the team and Hannibal (George Peppard). There's not much known about his background but his assistant reveals that if Stockwell doesn't call into a unknown location at certain intervals, his operative would dissolve. He spent some time in Hong Kong where he built up an intelligence network. From time to time, he has a habit of reminding the team that "I'm going to do this....my way." In an episode called "The Say U.N.C.L.E. Affair", Stockwell is reunited with his longtime friend and former partner, Ivan Trigorin where he is captured and tortured by him to get information about a secret Russian jet. (The episode reunited Robert with David, his friend and co-star from 'The Man from U.N.C.L.E.'). I loved the introduction of General Hunt Stockwell because, despite being the antagonist, he is mysterious and nobody knows of his true intentions towards the team. There were moments where you wanted to kick his ass because of his treatment towards the team but he also had a job to do that was unpleasant. When Stockwell was captured and tortured for information by Trigorin, they could've let him get killed but the team came to his rescue. This was the first character I vaguely remember whenever I watched reruns of the show and I have a soft spot in my heart for Stockwell. The reunion between Robert and David in The Say U.N.C.L.E. Affair and their hug is so genuine as two old friends are glad to see one another again.
3) Harry Rule - The Protectors Harry Rule is a wealthy international private investigator who takes on cases that protects the innocent and belong to an organization called "The Protectors". He works alongside friends, the Contessa Caroline di Contini (Nyree-Dawn Porter) and Paul Buchet (Tony Anholt) who usually work outside of London when they're not with Harry. Despite the obvious flirting and a few romantic instances, there is no real romantic relationship between Harry and Contessa. The Protectors is an interesting series but the lack of interest from the production people, not much is known about any of the characters. If the show would've lasted longer, we might find out more about Harry and a potential of a romantic relationship between he and Contessa would be a possibility. Interesting fact that in one of the season 1 episodes, Robert met his future wife, actress Linda Staab, which was directed by him. Harry is one of my favorite characters but he reminds me of Napoleon Solo at a certain point but his background is vague which means it could be filled in or made up through fanfiction. The first episode reveals that Harry does have an ex wife and a child.
4) Bill Fenner - The Venetian Affair He is an ex-CIA operative who has turned into a journalist and is suddenly sent to Venice in order to investigate a suicide bombing at a peace conference. Bill is officially out of retirement and his ex-wife, Sandra Fane (Elke Sommer) is top of the suspect list, believed to be a Communist sympathizer. Despite all that, both Bill and Sandra share a few romantic moments. She is unfortunately shot in front of him which stirs up emotions in him, including anger. As I watch the entire film, it reminds me of a Man from UNCLE episode but much darker and Bill is almost like Napoleon Solo but his personality is different. Bill is still effected by Sandra's leaving and he still does love her. In his 2009 autobiography, Robert stated that he was attracted to Elke, who played his ex-wife in the movie but she was dating a friend of his so the romance was a no-go. The chemistry between the 2 actors is obvious on-screen and being a CIA operative can take an emotional toll.
5) Hayden Danzinger - Columbo He is the executive of an automotive company who is currently on a cruise with his wife (Jane Greer), as well as a few of his friends, but he has been having an affair with Rosanna Wells (Poupée Bocar), a lounge singer on the ship, and she threatens to expose the affair to his wife. After inhaling a drug which stimulates a heart attack before jumping into the pool, he quietly sneaks into her room and he shoots her in the back, writing the letter "L" in lipstick to blame the murder on the piano player (Dean Stockwell). The evidence eventually piles up against Hayden and Lieutenant Columbo (Peter Falk), who is on the cruise with his wife, reveals to the captain (Patrick Macnee) that he is the murderer. Like some of his villains, Danzinger is an interesting character because he doesn't seem the type of man who would kill a beautiful woman and he doesn't seem to become really irritated by Columbo's presence. Of course, in his true fashion Robert's character breaks out into a smile. I really don't have a reason why this character is a favorite but I think the style Robert plays him in, he's a likable guy!

Frank Frazetta’s “Kane on The Golden Sea”
“I liked doing the Kane series. There is a dark mood going on: you don’t know whether to root for this guy or hope he gets taken out. Which would you prefer? That’s the question I want going through the viewer’s head when they look at these paintings.”
- Frank Frazetta (LEGACY Selected Paintings & Drawings by the Grand Master of Fantastic Art. Edited by Arnie and Cathy Fenner)
This artwork by Frazetta was created with oil on board. The original work measures 16x22inches. It was the cover artwork for the paperback, “Darkness Weaves” by Karl Edward Wagner (Warner Books, 1978.) Karl Edward Wagner was a respected editor as well as a writer. He compiled fifteen volumes of “Year’s Best Horror”, several fantasy anthologies under the title of Echoes of Valor and restored the preferred original text to Robert E. Howard’s Conan stories in a series for Berkley books. In the latter part of his career Wagner turned to writing horror fiction and he was the recipient of both the World Fantasy and British Fantasy awards.

Ok, so, I said I should make a masterlist of Robert Vaughn roles and whether or not each character survived, so here it is, under the cut--presented in chronological order of release/airdate, here are the roles that @ksturf and/or I have seen (will be updated as we see more).
(Obviously, spoilers...)
Hamlet (Hamlet) -- death by poisoned blade
Pharaonic solider (Ten Commandments) -- death by Red Sea re-merge
Idol Worshipper (Ten Commandments) -- death by the wrath of God (yup, two bit parts in this move, and they both got killed off...)
Mr. Beekman (Father Knows Best) -- survives
Bob Ford (Hell’s Crossroads) -- survives
Buddy Root (No Time to Be Young) -- survives
Billy Jack (Zane Gray Theater) -- death by gunshot
Johnny Adler (Zane Gray Theater) -- survives
Kid (Gunsmoke) -- death by gunshot (after literally twenty seconds onscreen)
Andy Bowers (Gunsmoke) -- survives
Frank Elliot (Panic!) -- survives
Symbol Maker’s Son (Teenage Caveman) -- survives

George Jones (State Trooper) -- death by execution

Theodore Roosevelt (Law of the Plainsman) -- survives in the episode, but as he’s playing a historical figure who eventually dies, idk what to count this one as...
Asa Bannister (The Rebel) -- survives
Perry Holcomb (Men into Space) -- survives (just barely)
Lee (The Magnificent Seven) -- death by gunshot I REFUSE TO ACCEPT THIS; YOU CAN’T MAKE ME 😭
Sandy Kayle (Laramie) -- death by gunshot/rock slide combo (I think; it’s been a while since I seen this one)
Dr. Guy Collins (The June Allyson Show) -- survives
Roy Pelham (Wagon Train) -- survives
Roger Bigelow (Wagon Train) -- survives
Dr. Frank Cordell (Thriller) -- death by falling

Jim Darling (The Dick Van Dyke Show) -- survives
Capt. Raymond Rambridge (The Lieutenant) -- survives

Walter Chalmers (Bullitt) -- survives
Antonio (If it’s Tuesday, it Must be Belgium) -- survives
Paul Krueger (The Bridge at Remagen) -- death by execution
Casca (Julius Caesar) -- not entirely sure, but seeing as though he is last mentioned by an angry mob out to get him and is never seen after that, I’m going to guess death by angry mob

Neilson (Clay Pigeon) -- death by gunshot
Jerry Hunter (The Woman Hunter) -- death by gunshot or a fall (forget which...)
Harry Rule (The Protectors) -- survives
Parker (The Towering Inferno) -- death by fall
Charles Clay (Columbo) -- death by blunt force trauma
Hayden Danziger (Columbo) -- survives
Proteus IV (Demon Seed) -- survives... in a manner of speaking (he’s a sentient computer who uploads his sentience to a human body as he’s being shut down, so technically, he lives)
Col Rogers (Brass Target) -- death by gunshot (I think? It’s been a while)
Sebastian Rolande (Hawaii 5-O) -- survives
Hud (Cuba Crossing) -- death by gunshot
Harrison Crawford (City in Fear) -- survives
Barkley (Virus) -- death by genetically modified flu virus (saw that coming a mile and a half away...)
Gelt (Battle Beyond the Stars) -- death by intergalactic battle

Bill Stratton (Diagnosis Murder) -- death by gunshot
Alexander Drake (Diagnosis Murder) -- death by gunshot
Prof. Michaels (An American Affair) -- alive
Ron Fairfax (The Sender) -- death by gunshot

Carl Anderton (Law & Order) -- survives
Tate Speer (Law & Order SVU) -- survives
Walter Briggs (Law & Order SVU) -- death by old age/illness
Baxter Cain (Baseketball) -- survives (but, again, his dignity does not)

INDY Daily: Durham's Primary Election Results • A Bill for Survivors of Contaminated Water at Camp Lejeune • Congressional Candidate Charles Graham, a Dem, Voted for HB 2
It’s Wednesday, October 6
Thank you to our sponsor this week, NC Theatre. Book your tickets now to see the "9 to 5" The Musical, starring Lauren Kennedy, Ryah Nixon, Ben Davis, and Raleigh's very own IRA DAVID WOOD III. 9 to 5 is an outrageous, 1980s era revenge story of friendship and female empowerment.
Good morning, readers.
Following yesterday's primary, in which 20,033 ballots were cast out of a total 199,955 registered voters, we now have our top two contenders in each of Durham's municipal races—that is, the candidates who will appear on Durham voters' ballots in the general election on November 2.
Here are the results of the primary for the mayoral race and the Wards I and II races (the candidates who will face off in November are bolded) according to the N.C. Board of Elections website. *

*Ward III
Only two candidates, AJ Williams and Leonardo Williams, filed to run in Ward III; they will appear on the ballot in November.
Early voting for the general election in Durham, Orange, and Wake County municipal races begins October 14. Make a plan to register and vote! Send along any questions you may have about how to do either.
We'll be updating our 2021 voting guide this week with candidate questionnaires and, for Orange County races, endorsements, so be sure to check for that content.
And we have a new paper out on stands today—grab a paper, or you can read all of our stories on our website.
Thanks for reading and have a great Wednesday!

“Hundreds See Bombing Planes Collide Near Bond Head,” Barrie Examiner. March 20, 1941. Page 03. ---- Seven airmen were killed and another seriously injured and is now in Royal Victoria Hospital, Barrie, in the worst air-training disaster in Canadian history Thursday afternoon, March 13, when two big bombing planes collided while flying at 2,000 feet over Bond Head and crashed into a farmer’s field on the outskirts of the village. All eight of the airmen were from England and were in training at No. 31 Air Navigation School, Port Albert.
Scene of the disaster is pictured at Top Left, while at Top Right is Robert Gummerson, on whose property the planes crashed. In the middle row, from left to right, are Ted Hipwell, Jr., and Malcolm McLean, two of the eye-witnesses to the crash, and Charles Campbell, Provincial Officer Cecil Dean, Walter Reeves, Bradford’s chief of police, and Ben Collings, who helped take the dead and injured from the planes.
The map at lower left shows where the crash occurred, the ‘X’s’ marking the spots where the planes landed.
The men pictured in the bottom row are, left to right, Charles West, J. Boys, E. Bruce Fenner, Ken. Weeks, and Arnold Candle, all of whom saw the crash. The latter four are surveyors who were working in the area at the time.
