Baseball is not meant to be played fast.
Baseball is not meant to be played fast. Its a summer sport. "The Boys of Summer" It sucks to watch on TV sometimes, frankly, its better on the radio anyways.
Baseball, for me, exists where the heat and time mix to make it oppressive at times. Sure, it has its moments of action forever, but baseball as a game should always be a carefully wound spring waiting to be let loose. There's amazing tension in baseball.
I think back to the typical imagery in baseball movies. It's always slow motion. A hand punching the glove, giving you time to watch the little bits of dust and dirt dance in the air. Its no other sounds than an deep exhale and the soft crushing sound of leather squeezing into the wood of a bat. It's cleats dragging through the dirt, readying, waiting for the pitch.
It's baseball and nostalgia and a want to wax romantic about the sport; however all sports, not just baseball, teach us lessons. They tell us stories. It takes time to tell the story.
The story's been the same for millennia, ever since the first games of chance and skill were every played, the first race run. It is a ritual deeply set within the human mind on a primal level. Sport's teach us defeat and victory, unlikely heroes and old favorites. The tell us of surprising upsets and outright domination. They show us collapse and retaliation, grit, pain, exhilaration, teamwork and selfishness alike. But ultimately, the story and lesson sports teach us is hope.
Maybe I've seen "Angels in the Outfield" too many times as a kid. But please consider it. Keep baseball slow. Keep winding the spring. Let hope weave its way into the game. Give the fans of all ages the ability to have that moment of sheer faith and held breath. Please, keep baseball slow. The commercial time you can sell isn't worth your soul.

Continuation of this post with some new ideas. I'd really want to see OG Phoenix, Maya and Edgeworth to meet this reversed people they long new. Because it would be so hilarious to have MVK be our assistant.
Like imagine Phoenix trying to defend Franziska in Reversed DL-6 and hitting the dead end. Phoenix reaches for the court record, but it isn't where it was last. He turns to Maya, who was unusually quiet for quite some time. But it isn't Maya anymore, it's MVK's ghost, that she channeled. And he took the court record to examine the case for himself. He explains to Phoenix that he suddenly awoken in these strange clothes, in the middle of the court case with a crumbled paper in his hands. There was simply "I'm Maya Fey, channeling you to help Phoenix to win the trial. Your daughter is the defendant, crazy, right? Anyway, we're stuck, please help." So he helped himself to the court record to at least understand what's happening.
Now in this AU MVK is a good person, but still a jerk at times. Like, if Phoenix gets something wrong Manfred would be at his limit.
Phoenix: "And the real culprit is.... Franziska von Karma! "
Judge: *shocked*
MVK: Sorry, I guess the defence is an absolute buffoon who humiliates both himself and this court. Allow him to think again, though.
...
Phoenix: The victim in DL-6 incident was killed... With the glass shard!
Phoenix: (why do I feel that my temple burning..?)
...
Phoenix: This is the proof that Ms von Karma wasn't there during the crime!
Phoenix: (if the looks could kill, we'll have a trial with me as the victim.......)
...
But the other times he helps very much. Despite staying stoic ans unfazed, MVK tries his best to protect his daughter and find the truth. And when prosecution (OG Edgeworth) or witness (Gregory) tries to push defence around, he usually helps with his mere presence. When Judge tries to end the trial MVK does smt similar to his OG counterpart and literally stops him mis sentence.
#gregory edgeworth#miles edgeworth#manfred von karma#phoenix wright#maya fey#ace attorney#ace attorney au#dl 6 but reversed#idk i just think it would be amazing to see mvk on our side once#aai robbed us lmao#in this au he'd be such a jerk to Phoenix but ultimately be very grateful#gyakuten saiban#aa

hi!! so this isn't actually the case as while gourdy was briefly mentioned in a trial, said trial had nothing to do with whether or not gourdy was "real" per se as much as. well. murder, actually. while gourdy WAS found out to be an inflatable steel samurai this was not brought up in the case at all as the veracity of gourdy wasn't really as relevant as the fact that the witness was looking for gourdy rather than at the murder she claimed to have seen. plus this was also a relatively small part of a MUCH larger trial which for those interested not only solved the dl-6 case but ALSO marked the end of prosecutor von karma's ~40 year long record and the court records are really a fascinating read through!!

Baseball isn’t meant to be rushed. Baseball is meant to be savored. Play clocks and shot clocks work in other sports because those sports have a clock that counts down until the end of the game. Baseball was different, baseball never had any clocks, until now…

What is the Golden At-Bat? It’s an idea that MLB commissioner Rob Manfred floated in a podcast interview last month, which would allow a team to choose one at-bat in every game and send its best hitter to the plate — even if he was already in the lineup and it wasn’t his turn to bat. There’s a word in Yiddish to describe an idea this bad — ferkakta. As in “this is the most ferkakta idea ever proposed for baseball, and it needs to die a quick and immediate death.”
MLB’s ‘Golden At-Bat’ idea would alter baseball for the worse
This is one of, if not the single WORST ideas I’ve seen come out of Manfred’s office.

Issuing a rule change they claimed was necessary to bring the game into the 21st century, Major League Baseball officials announced Wednesday they would add a clock to speed up Joe Davis’ commentary. “Adding a 30-second clock to cut down on Joe’s long, rambling commentary is, frankly, a long overdue improvement that will help streamline the broadcast,” said MLB commissioner Rob Manfred, who revealed that millions of fans had requested the new clock, having grown tired of the Fox Sports announcer’s slow and increasingly irrelevant analysis. And that’s that for Veilguard. Got all the achievements and got the four main possible endings (didn’t bother with the bad ending where you do none of the side quests, everyone dies, and you end up trapped in the Fade forever with Solas).
My four Rooks:
Female Shadow Dragon elf mage - saved Minrathous - romanced Harding - punched Solas in the face
Female Antivan Crow human rogue - saved Treviso - romanced Lucanis - tricked Solas into using the fake dagger
Male Grey Warden dwarf warrior (this was originally going be a Qunari, but I couldn’t get over the yassified look of all the qunari I tried to make and I gave up) - saved Treviso - romanced Davrin (meant to romance Bellara and lol welp, that didn’t happen) - big softie who sent Solas into the Fade with the Inquisitor
Male Mourn Watch elf mage - saved Minrathous - romanced Emmrich (meant to romance Bellara or Neve and lol welp, that didn’t happen) - told the Inquisitor she could do better and made Solas go off into the Fade alone.
My Mourn Watch one is probably going to be my “canon” run, since I liked it the best (that’s not saying much) of my runs. I went with a life leeching run for him, including using the unique items that made health potions/companion heals not work, and beefed up leeching. Literally the only time I died was when my controller ran out of juice in the middle of a dragon fight. The Elgar’nan fight was over so fast I was like, “Wait, is that it?” It was like the curb stomp fight in Inquisition with Corypheus before they let you have enemies scale up with you.
And now for my thoughts. And oh boy, do I have a lot of them. Hoo.
I have…so many issues with this game. It is a very good…whatever the gaming equivalent of a popcorn flick is. It’s great if you go in with your brain turned off and enjoy all the shiny. But that’s not what I want in a Dragon Age game. I’ve been replaying DA2 - the game that DATV is basically trying to channel - while playing these, and the difference in writing quality and intricacy of plot and world building could not be more sharp. The first time I played DATV, I thought it was fine. Almost aggressively fine. I had fun with streaming the game and seeing where it went. I loved the reveals with the wolf statues. I had some major issues with the writing being as subtle as a brick to the face at times (more on my thoughts about the dialogue LATER, because oh boy), but it was serviceable. And I genuinely thought Veilguard had been robbed by not being nominated for Art Direction at the Game Awards, because say what you will, the areas are fucking gorgeous. But, even then, I was like, “Yeah, this would not have deserved a GOTY nomination had it gotten one,” and placed it at a 7 or 8 out of 10. A good enough, enjoyable game that ran well, but was not by any means GOTY material.
Then I made the mistake of playing it again, and the cracks began to show. By the time I hit the middle of Act 2 of my third run, I was just so done. I hated every time certain companions had anything to say at all. I hated that you couldn’t call people out for being a jerk but had to be the supportive nursery school teacher at all times to them. And for the first time playing any BioWare game at all, I found myself wishing I could either not recruit certain people or kick them out of camp. The cracks were beyond showing at that point, and I no longer thought the writing was even “serviceable.” Things that hadn’t seemed so bad on that first popcorn flick run suddenly became a problem - not being able to actually talk to your companions to get to know them went from “it feels more natural to have them saying this stuff while out in the field” to “what is even the point of going around the Lighthouse if all it gets me is a line spoken at me or overhearing bits of them having ACTUAL conversations?” It legitimately hurt replayability. I missed being able to actually talk to my companions, and I realized I cared more about Manfred and Assan than most of my companions because Manfred and Assan actually seemed to like interacting with me. I will take Manfred’s rock-paper-scissors game over a “hey Rook” and dead-eyed stare.
By the time I hit late act 2, I couldn’t wait for it to be over so I could delete the damn game off my hard drive…only for the last achievement I had yet to get to NOT pop when I finished the game. I looked it up and discovered it wasn’t set by triggering a certain end state, but was tied to picking some flowers in Act 2, and wanted to cry. I don’t usually 100% games, especially if I feel like some of the achievements are bullshit I don’t want to do (‘sup, MELE needing you to do some Armax Arena Spectre-level fight - I would sooner chew off my own arm than do that, as anyone who watched me stream Veilguard would have guessed watching me kvetching the whole time I was doing that Hall of Valor shit), but that was just frustrating. I decided to try to get it on a fresh run as a Mourn Watcher, since I’d heard that was one of the surprisingly good faction backgrounds, and that was a good choice. Mourn Watch became my favorite faction, when it had been Shadow Dragons until then. It added so much to a lot more conversations than I would have thought, and made it so I actually enjoyed the sadly few times you get to actually have conversations instead of eavesdropping/being talked at. I’m glad I decided to slog through one more time for that achievement, because if I’d ended it on that third run, I know I would have never played it again. It turned back into a popcorn movie again, aided by me knowing when to put on a YouTube video and watch or scroll through Bluesky instead of listening to a certain character be the fucking worst. If I ever play again, it’ll be a Mourn Watcher (I already know the Veil Jumpers and Lords of Fortune are considered, shall we say, lackluster background factions.)
Which brings me to some of the big, fundamental problems this game had.
This is not a CRPG. It’s just not. It’s an action RPG now, with the focus on “action” not “RPG.” It’s part of the whole Mass Effect-ification of Dragon Age. And I say this as a huge Mass Effect fan:
Dragon Age should not be like Mass Effect. And vice versa.
When Andromeda came out, they decided to ditch the Paragon/Renegade system, and instead went for DAI-style emotion-based options. Which seems great! More speech choices to make a more nuanced Ryder instead of picking up or down! Great! Only no! A lot of people hated it because it didn’t feel like Mass Effect. They had taken away something that had seemed like a major part of how you roll played in the series, and replaced it something very different. It was the first time they took a mechanic from one game and ported it into another, and it didn’t really go over well with a lot of ME fans because it didn’t feel like a Mass Effect mechanic.
And now with Veilguard, they basically made a Mass Effect game with a Dragon Age skin on it. And it just doesn’t work.
Combat: They copied the combat wheel from Mass Effect, but did it kind of badly. I honestly hated it because I tried to play like I do in Mass Effect - pull it up, use it to look around and get a handle on my environment, then pick an enemy or a safe space to bolt to - and the camera snapping the enemies meant I couldn’t. It drove me crazy because it was like the Mass Effect wheel but fundamentally not, and the camera drove me mad because I’d pull it up trying to find where the nearest blight boil was, and it would snap on enemies instead of just letting me look. It’s like they wanted to get rid of every little bit of tactical game play and replace with smashy smashy bang bang instead. Don’t think, don’t plan, just attack…which fits in with the popcorn flick-ness of DATV. Don’t think, just do. Turn your brain off and look at the particle effects.
Another Mass Effect-ification with regards to combat is dropping from taking 3 companions to 2. Which you need to do to have that Mass Effect style combat wheel, and the Mass Effect 3/Andromeda style primer/detonation style interaction of companion powers. Detonations were very satisfying, but not very Dragon Age-y, and requires throwing out some of that DA lore to make it work, because now everyone uses magic-based abilities even if they aren’t mages. Assan attacks deal fire damage. You can spec a warrior who calls up a giant lightning hammer to twirl around, and…how? That’s not enchantment, that’s plain ol’ magic, and how?! Warriors didn’t deal magic-based attacks unless their weapons where enchanted before, but now, everyone is just tossing magic attacks at everything. That’s not how the world of Thedas has worked until now, but you can’t have those flashy explosions or particle effects otherwise, so shhh, turn off your brain and don’t think, shhh. Look at the screen light up and the pretty lights. It worked in Mass Effect because they had already set up tech and biotic attacks, but there’s no way to make hitting something hard with a sword cause it to blow up and damage all the other baddies around them, so now everyone has magic. OK.
As an aside, it was also a really bad idea of get rid of how aggro worked. Dragon Age had always worked by warriors drawing aggro because they had the heavier armor (or could use taunt on enemies targeting squishy mages or rogues). Rogues had lower aggro because they had lighter armor, and could sneak. Mages had even lower aggro because they had the lightest armor and were distance fighters. DATV threw that out the window, and Rook draws all aggro because they are the only ones with a health bar. Your squad is immortal in fights, which means there’s no reason for enemies to ever target them. Which means god help you early game when mages and rogues have no real skills yet. Enjoy dodging while your companions hit the enemies with what seems like attacks as powerful as spitballs. It also means that there are times what the game tells you and the fight you just did are completely at odds. Remember that fight with the Wrath of the Stone in Harding’s companion quest? That thing is on your ass the entire time, but then at the end of it, Rook says something along the lines of “It really hates Harding,” and…are you gaslighting me, game? That thing ignored Harding the whole damn time in favor of trying to stomp me like a cockroach. Harding did not exist to it during my fight. It had a hate boner for Rook and Rook alone, no matter what the game tried to insist on after.
Now, imagine how that would have felt if Harding actually could have been killed/knocked out during the fight, and it was only going after her? What if you couldn’t damage it if it took her down, so you had to make sure she stayed alive? Imagine how different that fight would have hit then? But no, that would mean the devs have to think about how to rez characters and how healing would work, and would mean players have to be tactical, and shh, no, no more of that, no thinking, just dodge and hit things and look at the particle effects. Shh. Have some more popcorn.
Story: DATV wants so badly to be ME2. It wants to recall the companion loyalty quests and the big suicide mission where you have to have everyone ready or you’ll all die. But you can’t copy what you did before and get the same flowers and results. You just can’t. You can try, and all you’ll get is diminishing returns. They tried to do the big cosmic horror of ME1, complete with a Virmire choice, then have the big final stakes of ME2, and no. You can’t follow a template and get the same greatness. That’s not how it works.
And speaking of following templates…
Romances: The romances in Veilguard are just dismal. And I think it’s because they decided to follow the Mass Effect pacing formula instead of the Dragon Age one.
Dragon Age: You start flirting in Act 1. You usually flirt with everyone because hey, why not? Some time in Act 2, things start getting serious, and you have to settle on who you want to go for. Things start to get serious, you get together, and then you get happy fun adult time with your new LI. You get the option to break it off or commit to them fully. By Act 3, you’re in a committed relationship. People comment about it. You can go to them and spend time with them - nothing major, maybe just a kiss. There might also be a special scene that’s just with them and unique to the romance. And by the end, after the lengthy amount of time that’s passed, you are Together.
Mass Effect: You start flirting in Act 1. You usually flirt with everyone because hey, why not? In Act 2, you keep on flirting with everyone. By the end, you might have to make a choice if you’re flirting too hard with everyone and the two LI options tell you to pick someone already, but you’re just picking who you’re interested in. Early in Act 3, there might be an almost kiss, but it’s mostly just the occasional anticipation of eventually boning and nothing really happens until right before the final big fight, when your LI shows up to your cabin for “oh shit, we might die in a few hours, so let’s go out with a high note” happy fun adult time. The only time you get that “committed relationship” vibes is in ME3 if you’re romanced the same character for at least one other game, and you choose to continue the relationship.
The Mass Effect pacing works in the Mass Effect trilogy because each game is only 20-40 hours long. Veilguard is a good 80 hours long. That means using that same amount of romance you use in ME is going to mean you’ve got too little butter to spread over too much bread. It’s why you have a good start for the romances in Act 1, then act 2 is a such a desert of nothing after you commit that I genuinely wondered if I’d hit the wrong option at said no at several points during the very long third act. There’s not just enough content for that long of an Act 2. Near the end everyone starts commenting on you being with them, but it’s not actually happening in the game. There’s no flirting, there are no extra scenes, and even the scene when you commit to them is based on a scene that happens with everyone, just with a romance option tacked on. The only person (of the ones I romanced, so I can’t speak to the others) who really get unique scenes was Emmerich. He actually takes you out on a unique date. It helped a lot to make Emmerich’s romance feel more fleshed out than the others. And Davrin had so many little jaunts out in the woods that those turned into romantic trips out, which added a lot to his. But Lucanis’ and Hardings? With both of them, like I said before, I genuinely wondered if I had accidentally opted out. Their romances most used the Mass Effect format, and it just doesn’t work for a game this long. BioWare knew that once, long ago, because Andromeda did not use the ME trilogy format for romances and was closer to one they used in DA. But DATV is trying to be ME2, so they used ME2’s very thin romances as a guide.
And we can all see how well that turned out.
The Executors: Fuck me, they feel like Cerberus reskinned, and I absolutely hated when Mass Effect shifted from sci-fi/Lovecraftian horror to space opera with Cerberus as the main bad guys you have to fight with the Reapers functionally falling to the background. The Executors are a secret, shadowy organization pulling strings from behind the scenes like the Shadow Broker codexes in ME2 retconned Cerberus into having been doing in ME. Ugh.
The Andromeda-ification of dialogue: Remember Peebee? Remember how she talked? Give her long hair and pointy ears, and she’s Bellara. Down even to the techno-babble. It’s like they’re trying to change magic to just “sufficiently advanced technology.” Everyone speaks in that modern, quippy style that was annoying in a game set hundreds of years in the future because it felt dated by the time the game came out (Ryder makes a Frozen joke, y’all). And it feels completely out of place in a game set in an early modern setting (I don’t think DA is medieval, honestly - it’s more a pre-industrialization/early scientific revoltution setting, so more 1500-1700s, and I’m gonna stop now). It was jarring. You can only let one quirky character break the rules about how people talk (Alistair in DAO, Varric in DA2, Cole in DAI) but when everyone does, it’s jarring. You can be anachronistic, but you have to know what you’re doing and how to do it when you do, and I’m sorry, but the current crop of BioWare writers don’t. They wrote the dialogue like it was a modern day YA novel, not a Dragon Age game. It would have been fine for a modern day urban fantasy game. It was not fine for a DA game set in the same time period as people using the four humours for “modern” medicine (remember the surgeon in DAI? Talked about the four humours? Yeah.)
OK, I did not intend to go on for this long, and I haven’t even gotten to what the game did to how religion is handled or the sociopolitical aspects of Thedas, and how they threw out so much that made Dragon Age unique in their urge to do a soft reboot, so I’m just going to end it here. I wanted to love this game, and I can only do that if I turn my brain off, and that’s not what Dragon Age should be.

Learning The Sad Truth
After a decade with Emmrich, it's become apparent to Dardin'an that they've truly stopped aging. They had already thought it strange that they looked like they did in their mid twenties with no real change by the time Solas' ritual was stopped, but with Emmrich reaching 60, and looking just that much older, Dardin'an doesn't look 40 at all. Not a thing has changed, and it's beginning to scare them. After learning the truth about their life - that they were a wisp who had taken human form - they'd often wondered if there were side effects. Now, it seems they have their answer.
To be certain, they call upon Keepsake and Curio in private, needing that certainty. "It is a pleasure to see you again, Rook" Keepsake says.
"Thank you. It is always an honor to see the both of you. Hail the Dead...But...I have questions. I know I am not truly an Elf. I was a wisp. Am a wisp, I suppose...And I seem to have stopped aging. I look no different than I did when I was 25 or so...How is that possible?"
Curio nods "I am afraid you are not mortal. We have been observing you, Rook. Your state of being is new to us, but we've seen it too."
"But you are no less fragile. You can still fall in battle no differently than any other. I'm afraid, however, unless that happens, you will far outlive Emmrich...Farther than you perhaps previously planned" Keepsake chimes.
Dardin'an pales and has to take a seat on one of the steps of a tomb to keep their head from spinning quite so much "So...I was right...Shit...I should have let him turn Lich...but Manfred..."
"If it is any consolation, it means he can, in theory, return to you...in time. As you did for him. We may be able to guide that, now that we know more about your condition" Curio remarks
Dardin'an winces "I...I thought I could face his death with my head held high. But I thought I'd grow old with him, relatively speaking. I didn't think-...This is cruel! What am I supposed to do? How do I tell him?"
"He is an observant man, Rook. He already knows. That you love him still has kept him from speaking up." Keepsake's tone suggests this isn't the first time they've had this talk
Dardin'an stands and looks horrified "He figured it out...?! How long ago?"
"Six years...He came to us needing to know why you never seem to change. We had realized by then that you were more unique than previously believed"
With years forming in their eyes, they turn from the spirits. "Thank you...I need to speak with Emmrich..."
Dardin'an send Keepsake and Curio back to rest and goes to find Emmrich in their room. He is grading some projects, so he doesn't look up from his work. "Ah! Rook, dearest! Pass me that tome on the desk beside you, will you? I believe one of my students stumbled on something..."
Dardin'an sighs, and does as asked. They let Emmrich make his notes before they speak.
"...So...You've known for six years..."
Emmrich sits up and turns to finally meet Dardin'an's gaze "Oh...my love, I had hoped you wouldn't realize so quickly...Elves seem to age so gracefully...I thought-..." He sighs. "...Well, I knew you'd find out eventually. I just wanted our time together to be less fraught with concern."
Dardin'an shakes their head. "It's not right! You should be immortal too. I robbed that from you...I should've-...!"
Emmrich stands and hugs Dardin'an close "You gave us a son we could raise together...And what a wonder he is! I'd be so broken without that. Losing Manfred would never have been worth immortality...Even if we could share in it after all. And I haven't been entirely inactive since I realized...I'm trying to find out if, perhaps...I could become a wisp myself after-...Well...after the end. If I can possess a form like you did, or even one like Manfred, and grow into my own again...You won't have to bear eternity alone..."
Dardin'an tenses "I can't-...Decades without you...."
"...Will be a blink of an eye, dearest. And then you'll have me again. Though, I may be a tad different...But if I find away to lock my mind within the wisp form I take, I wouldn't be quite so different as you are to my first love. I'd essentially be me, reborn"
Dardin'an kisses Emmrich and hugs him back finally "Please find a way. It was one thing when I thought I would only have a few years without you before I could rejoin you...Forever?...I can't face that."
Emmrich melts a little at the kiss and smiles with a melancholy glint in his eyes. "I understand, darling, I truly do...If not for my own mortality, I believe I might have spent all my time worrying over you...Yes, you're immortal yourself, but as a Lich, I would be much harder to kill. You are not. And in our line of work, beyond the Necropolis, there is no reality where neither of us is in danger of passing before the other."
Dardin'an groans "I suppose...I just wish we could stop finding salt to pour in our wounds. Every time we get comfortable, something new comes along that hurts...I came into this relationship knowing odds were high I'd lose you one day. But I knew I'd die eventually...Then I find out I'm a wisp that possessed an infant's corpse, and I'm still not able to really wrap my mind around that...But on top of it all, I'm immortal because of it? Now, I get to lose you, like you lost the person I once was? Get me off this runaway cart...I need a break..."
Emmrich strokes Dardin'an's cheek and sighs "Oh, Rook...Such is life. But we have a good life together, and so many happy memories, adventures, stories to tell...Let's focus on that, while we seek solutions to the problems that arise. It's the best way around all that stress."
Dardin'an nods against Emmrich's chest and pulls him to their bed for a desperately needed distraction to aid in working on moving on from this revelation.

It's A Man's World Chapter 4 (Drip)
a/n: I rewrote this chapter 2 or 3 times. I personally think it's not my best, but I hope you like it let me know in my ask ;)
Daft Day
Here we are, the anticipation of Draft Day hanging thick in the air. Don’t even think about asking me what happened after the party or the following day—I honestly can’t remember. I really should add "Don’t Party with the Bengals" to my ever-growing list of things to avoid.
A knock pulls me out of my thoughts “Hey Sierra, you ready? Kyle is here!” Joe’s voice calls out from the other side of the bathroom door, breaking my moment of reflection.
I do one last check in the mirror, smoothing down my hair and adjusting my outfit before reluctantly opening the door. “Yeah, I’m ready,” I reply, a hint of excitement mixed with nerves in my tone.
“What do you think?” I asked as I stepped out of the bathroom. I do a little spin to show off my ensemble. I had chosen not to wear a dress, instead opting for a tailored black blazer adorned with elegant gold decorations cascading down the shoulders. Paired with a sleek, short skirt featuring matching gold accents that gave a hint of sparkle, I feel chic and ready for the moment. To complete the look, I slipped on a pair of black heels that added just the right amount of height.
He looks at me from his spot on the couch “You look stunning just missing one thing” he says as he gets up and approaches me. He reaches up and takes the of his chain off his neck “Turn around” he tells me.
This boy here is doing things to my soul and he just doesn't even know it. Doing as he says I turn around and he puts his chain on me. He turns me back around “Now you dripping in gold”
Shaking my head unable to find words I grab my clutch as he moves away and opens the door “Come on Ja’marr and Mia are waiting on us.”
When we arrived at the arena. One of the crew members led us to a section where Mia and Ja’marr were waiting for us.
We exchange warm hugs and enthusiastic hellos, settling in comfortably on the plush couch. As I take a moment to look around the room, I can't help but notice the sea of nervous excitement among the crowd of players, all waiting for their futures to unfold during the draft. Suddenly, a rush of nerves hits me, and I start shaking my leg unconsciously, trying to calm my racing thoughts.
In my fidgeting, I unintentionally nudge Mia, who looks over at me with concern. “Hey, you okay?” she asks, her brow slightly furrowed.
I nod and glance at her, taking a deep breath. “Yeah, just a bit nervous,” I admit, trying to shake off the anxiety.
She grabs my hand “Just breathe you probably have all 32 teams gunning for you” she reassures me “Any team you're specifically looking for?” Ja’marr questioned. I shake my head “Not really although I would love to go back home and play for the Cardinals don't think I'd grow too much there” I respond with a shrug.
‘Hey maybe the Reds will draft her that way she can't leave Cincinnati” Joe pipes in with a laugh.
I looked back at him “Naw me cold weather don't get along”
“Girl no weather and you get along” Mia interjects we all laugh because she is right Winter, Spring, Summer, and Fall if I wasn't playing baseball you have to catch me in the comforts of my bed.
As we continue to share laughs and stories, the lights suddenly dim, and a dynamic video package begins to play on the large screen, showcasing the highs of previous seasons and the promise of new talent.
The energy in the room surges as the hype package concludes, and the spotlight shifts to the stage. The commissioner of the MLB, Rob Manfred, strides confidently onto the platform, radiating authority and excitement.
“Hello and welcome to the 2021 MLB Draft!” he announces, his voice echoing throughout the arena. “Tonight, we usher in a new era of baseball. You all have worked tirelessly for this moment, and now it’s time to see your dreams become reality. Let’s get started, shall we?” Rob declares from the podium, setting the stage for an unforgettable night.
The first round has concluded, and the results are in—nothing for me.
As the second round begins, the atmosphere remains tense, and yet, I cling to the flicker of hope that perhaps my name will be called.
When the third round rolls around, I hear another name—a person named Riley is chosen. My heart sinks as I realize I’m still overlooked.
Now, as the fourth round draws closer, a wave of anxiety washes over me. I navigate through the crowd, feeling the pulse of anticipation in the air. I approach the bar, the gleaming surface reflecting my apprehension, and the bartender looks up, asking, “What can I get you?”
“Whiskey, straight, please. Thank you,” I respond, my voice steady yet laced with underlying nerves.
She nods, her movements fluid as she prepares my drink. “Coming right up,” she says, and moments later, she slides the glass toward me.
I inhale deeply, trying to release some of the built-up tension. “Thank you,” I say, accepting the drink from her with a slight, grateful smile.
As I take a generous sip, the smooth warmth of the whiskey hits my stomach, providing a momentary reprieve from my anxious thoughts. Just then, I have the unsettling sensation that someone is watching me intently. Turning my head to the right, I lock eyes with a man making his way over, and his approach feels predatory as if I’m the target in his sights.
“I hope I'm not intruding,” he begins, leaning against the bar with a casual confidence, “but I must say, you look absolutely stunning tonight.” His tone is suave, designed to charm.
I muster a polite smile, aware that I want to deflect this interaction as quickly as possible. “Thank you,” I say, deliberately avoiding his gaze, trying to focus on anything but him.
“My name’s Chris,” he introduces himself, extending his hand toward me with an expectant grin. I glance at his hand, assessing the situation, before shaking my head gently. “Sorry, Chris, but I’m really not interested,” I reply softly, retreating into my glass as I seek refuge in my drink.
He draws back his hand and smirks playfully at me, his confidence evident. “Playing hard to get, I see,” he teases, leaning slightly closer.
I shake my head firmly, dismissing him. “Nope, just not looking for any extra company,” I reply, keeping my tone plain and simple as I mentally strategize my exit from this awkward interaction.
“You sure? You just seem tense,” he probes, inching even closer for comfort.
Before I can formulate a response, I suddenly feel a reassuring hand pressed against the middle of my back. A familiar voice cuts through the noise. “Wonder where you drifted off to. You okay?” Joe asks, his concern palpable.
I turn my head to face him, grateful for his interruption. “Yeah, I’m good. I just needed something to calm my nerves,” I respond, a sense of relief washing over me as his presence provides a buffer.
Joe nods, his expression softening. He motions with his head toward our group. “Come on,” he says, gently leading the way while keeping his hand on my back—a gesture that provides unexpected comfort. As we return to our section and settle into the couch, I lean closer to Joe and whisper, “Thank you.”
Joe takes a seat beside me, casually draping his arm behind me on the back of the couch. His protective stance envelops me in a sense of security.
“Not a problem,” he replies, though there’s a slight edge to his voice that piques my curiosity.
Was he feeling jealous?
I don’t have much time to ponder this question, as the lights in the venue dim once again, signaling the beginning of the fourth round of the MLB Draft. The anticipation in the air is almost electric.
Rob makes his way back to the podium, confidence radiating from him. “Alright, with the first pick of the fourth round of the 2021 MLB Draft, the Atlanta Braves select…” He glances down at his card, and a broad smile spreads across his face, crafting suspense in the room.
“Sierra Riley, shortstop out of LSU!”
The moment his words register, my heart races. I can hardly believe my ears. Suddenly, everyone around me is on their feet, applauding and cheering, and I feel like I’m floating. Someone pinch me, please—I must be dreaming!
As I stand up, I look at Mia, my heart pounding with disbelief, and mouth the words, “What the hell?” She chuckles, sharing in my incredulity. Joe steps aside, allowing me a clear path to the stage. As I stroll past him, he encourages me with a smile, saying, “Get ’em, superstar!”
I can’t help but grin back at him as I make my way to the stage, ascending the steps with a mixture of excitement and nerves. At the top, I’m greeted by Justin Bell, the manager of the Atlanta Braves, who stands ready with a baseball jersey and a Braves cap.
With a beaming smile, I approach him and wrap my arms around him in a brief hug. “Thank you so much!” I exclaim, my voice filled with genuine appreciation.
He pulls back slightly, maintaining eye contact as he responds, “You’re very welcome, Sierra.” Justin then carefully places the baseball cap on my head, his hands steady as he unfolds the jersey to reveal my last name and number, now emblazoned on a Braves jersey.
At that moment, words escape me entirely, and I shake my head in disbelief, overwhelmed by the reality of it all. Just then, I feel another hand on my shoulder. I turn to see the commissioner standing beside me, a warm smile on his face. “Congrats, Sierra,” he says, genuine joy in his voice.
“Thank you,” I manage to say, still absorbing the significance of this incredible moment. The commissioner's voice breaks through the fog of excitement as he gestures toward the cameras, encouraging me to pose with the jersey. I reflexively smile, showcasing my pride.
As I scan the room, my eyes land on Joe, whose face is illuminated by a broad smile. I see Mia, her eyes glistening with tears of joy, and Ja’marr cheering enthusiastically, like he’s at a football game.
In that instant, it hits me: all the hard work, the sacrifices, and the endless dedication truly do pay off.
As I made my way backstage, the atmosphere buzzed with excitement. One of the reporters from ESPN, eager and enthusiastic, pulled me aside for an interview.
"Sierra Riley, congratulations! You've just made history as the first woman ever to be drafted in Major League Baseball. Can you describe how you’re feeling at this moment?" she inquired, her eyes gleaming with curiosity.
I couldn't help but smile widely. "Thank you so much! Honestly, I feel incredibly blessed right now," I said, taking a moment to gather my thoughts. "It’s overwhelming, and part of me feels like my brain hasn’t fully processed everything yet,” I laughed lightly, shaking my head in disbelief. “But overall, I feel fantastic!"
The reporter leaned in for his next question, clearly intrigued. "What should Atlanta Braves fans expect from you moving forward?"
With confidence, I responded, "I hope they can expect all great things! I want them to know that I don’t take any of this for granted. This moment is huge for me, but it’s just the beginning of my story. I’m ready to work hard and make my mark!"
She nodded in appreciation, her face reflecting genuine excitement. "Thank you once again, and congratulations on this incredible achievement!” she exclaimed brightly before walking away, leaving me buzzing with a mix of joy and anticipation for what lay ahead.
Atlanta here I come.
