Known to eat both living and dead animals, and are often considered inferior birds because of this.
Black kites are the only raptor species known to fly in flocks of thousands.
Black kites eat their prey mid-flight, transferring food from their talons to beaks without landing.
Black kites gather around bushfires and feed on fleeing prey. They may also carry smoldering sticks to start new fires and attract more prey.
Black kites are monogamous and form strong pair bonds that may last for life.
Why Do They Matter?
They are scavengers! They feed on the dead and could reduce the spread of disease.
They consume many crop-destroying pests.

Tornadoes hit Tennessee, killing at least 22 people (AP) Tornadoes ripped across Tennessee early Tuesday, shredding at least 40 buildings and killing at least 22 people. One of the twisters caused severe damage across downtown Nashville, destroying the stained glass in a historic church and leaving hundreds of people homeless. Daybreak revealed a landscape littered with blown-down walls and roofs, snapped power lines and huge broken trees, leaving city streets in gridlock. Schools, courts, transit lines, an airport and the state Capitol were closed. “Last night was a reminder about how fragile life is,” Nashville Mayor John Cooper said at a Tuesday morning news conference.
Crisis Grows as Refugees Head for Greek Border (Foreign Policy) Since Turkey said last week it would no longer stop refugees from crossing into Europe, more than 10,000 migrants--including many from Syria and Afghanistan--have arrived at its land borders with EU countries and at least 1,000 have landed on Greece’s eastern Aegean islands. Greek authorities have responded with tear gas and a halt to asylum requests. The rush to the border is already fueling a crisis. A child died when a boat capsized on Monday, and Turkish security sources have reported at least one Syrian migrant was killed at the land border. Ursula von der Leyen, the president of the European Commission, is expected to visit the Greek-Turkish border today. She has expressed sympathy with Turkey’s “difficult situation”--hosting more than 3 million refugees--but condemned its move to let them leave its territory for Europe. German Chancellor Angela Merkel criticized Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan directly, calling the decision “unacceptable.” But Erdogan doubled down on Monday. “The period of single-sided sacrifice has come to an end,” he said.
Thousands of migrants look for way around shut Greek border (AP) Thousands of migrants searched for ways to cross Greece’s border with Turkey on Tuesday, as Athens ramped up its diplomatic efforts to get help from the European Union to seal off its eastern land and sea frontiers. Many of those hoping to enter Greece, which has made clear its border is shut, were trying their luck by wading or rowing across the Evros River that runs along most of the length of the Turkish frontier.
Turkey, Russia face off in Syria as fighting escalates, plane shot down (Reuters) Turkey shot down a Syrian government warplane on Tuesday over northwest Syria, where fighting has intensified in recent days, bringing Turkish and Russian forces close to direct conflict in the battle over the last swathe of Syria still held by rebels. It was the third Syrian warplane Turkey has shot down since Sunday in an escalating campaign against President Bashar al-Assad’s forces. NATO-member Turkey supports the rebels, while Assad relies on his superpower ally Russia.
Afghanistan violence to continue (NYT) U.S. military leaders cautioned that some level of violence is likely to continue in Afghanistan despite a major new agreement with the Taliban, as uncertainty about the terms of the arrangement overshadowed efforts to launch political negotiations next week. “To think that there’s going to be an absolute cessation of violence in Afghanistan, that is probably not going to happen,” Gen. Mark A. Milley, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, told reporters. “It’s probably not going to go to zero.”
U.N.’s nuclear chief to Iran: Cooperate or face new crisis (Reuters) Iran risks triggering a new crisis if it does not cooperate with the U.N. nuclear watchdog after failing to answer its questions about past nuclear activities at three sites and denying it access to two of them, its chief said on Tuesday.
India’s communal violence (Foreign Policy) Indian lawmakers have clashed over the religious riots that killed at least 45 people--mostly Muslims--in Delhi last week. Conducted with some complicity on the part of the police, the violence bears the hallmarks of an organized pogrom--and could be repeated in other parts of the country, Brown University professor Ashutosh Varshney tells FP’s Ravi Agrawal.
With chefs idle and vegetables rotting, China’s virus-hit restaurants say their goose is cooked (Washington Post) Coronavirus is devastating food establishments, karaoke halls and family-owned factories--the businesses that collectively employ 80 percent of the nation’s workers.
Covid-19 and the Summer Olympics (Quartz) Japan’s Olympics minister said the Tokyo Games could take place later in the year. “The contract calls for the Games to be held within 2020. That could be interpreted as allowing a postponement,” Seiko Hashimoto said in response to a question in parliament.
With most votes counted, Netanyahu is close to securing big win in Israeli election (Washington Post) The resurgent prime minister has positioned himself within two parliamentary seats of a record-breaking fifth term, but he still has to navigate an upcoming corruption trial.
Libya says oil shutdown losses close to $2.6 billion (AP) Libya’s national oil corporation says economic fallout continues from a protracted blockade of Libya’s vital oil fields and ports, with losses close to $2.6 billion.

Week Five – Savvy Sandstone
My family home is located on a hill, and because of this we are very well acquainted with the need for retaining walls during development. At the moment we are trying to arrange a Development Application for a new garage, and of course, a new retaining wall. There have been several conversations already about the design, the drawings, etc. but the part that has caught my attention the most was the discussion about the material it’s most likely going to be made of – sandstone. I’ve always found sandstone to be a beautiful material, but how does it hold up in relation to sustainability?
Sandstone has been used in buildings, monuments, and sculptures since prehistoric times, it is a very common type of stone with deposits located all around the world, making up around 20-25% of all the earth’s sedimentary rocks (Boggs 2006). Its durability, low maintenance requirements, and relatively easy workability sees it still being used regularly in today’s day and age.
When trying to do some research for this post about the environmental sustainability of using sandstone, I was astounded at the number of websites and articles singing the praises of sandstone, how sustainable it was as a non-polluting natural material, what a wonderful insulator it was and so forth. I very quickly realised however that every single one of these results were either from sandstone companies, stonemasons or quarries, who would obviously paint this stone in as positive a light as possible for their own financial benefit.
Once I switched over to scholarly articles however the story was rather different. Mining, no matter how readily available the resource is, will inherently have a negative impact on the environment. Waste slurry (fine particles of sandstone dust and water generated during stone cutting) clogs the topsoil, making it uninhabitable for plants, the water runoff from cutting the stone contains metals that leach into the surrounding groundwater, there are normally high transportation requirements leading to vehicle emissions, and to top it off up to 50% of the stone is wasted in the mining process as scraps and waste slurry (Goel et al 2020).
Still, strides have been made to make the process more sustainable. The main pollutant – the waste slurry – can be repurposed in concrete production. The highest use of mined sand in the world is in the concrete production process, however many studies have been conducted to compare the suitability of the dried sandstone waste dust from the slurry as a partial replacement, and found it to be quite suitable for use in structural concrete (Agrawal et al 2020). This would both lower the amount of natural sand needed and find a suitable use for the polluting waste slurry.
While we are still a while off with the building of our new garage and retaining wall, I’ll definitely be involving myself in the conversation to ensure that wherever the stone is purchased from has at least some sustainable practices in place.

Tarva
Tarva A town in Subarnapur district
Tarbha is a small town in Subarnapur district. Tarbha is sometimes referred to as the reverse India. Tarbha is considered a notified area council.
History-- According to mythology, Tarbhana came from Ter Vaya (तेराह भैया). There were 13 Gautia brothers in Tarbha during the Gautia system (formerly the chief was called Gautia in western Odisha). The name of the city was Terbaya before it was melted. On one side of the city is a small river called Nibriti Jor, which divides the districts of Subarnapur and Balangir into two parts. Saraswati - The Goddess of Intelligence
Saraswati or Sarasvati, also known as Bharati (eloquence), Shatarupa (existence), Vedamata ('mother of the Vedas'), Brahmi, Sarada, Vagisvari, and Putkari, is the Hindu goddess of learning, wisdom, music, aesthetics and speech. Saraswati is identified as the inventor of Sanskrit and, appropriately, gives Ganesha the gifts of pen and inks with which he wrote the great epic Mahabharata. The wife of Brahma, she is also a patron of the arts and sciences and worshipped as the goddess of learning in Jainism and several Buddhist sects.
Tumblr media
Saraswati's name means 'elegant', 'flowing', and 'watery' No wonder her name is used as one of the rivers flowing from the Himalaya. Thus this sacred river too got personified into a deity.
Saraswati Idols
Goddess Saraswati is depicted as a graceful young woman with white skin wearing a white sari (which symbolises purity) with a blue border. Not being concerned with worldly goods she rarely wears jewellery. Often a crescent is placed on her forehead and she is shown seated on a lotus flower or riding her vehicle - either a swan or a goose.
Frequently represented in figure sculpture on temples, Saraswati is often depicted with four arms, each holding a symbolic object. While the left hands carry palm-leaf manuscript and ritual water vessel, one of the right hands hold a white lotus, and the other performing the gift-giving gesture. The vina in the Goddess’ hand symbolizes the gift of music she gave to humanity.

The Term Plastic Pollution is Highly Ambiguous.
When we talk about the air/water/soil pollution, what we actually talk about is the media is being polluted. In each one of the cases, the victim of human activities is the medium itself. But in the case of plastics, the case is not the same. Everyone including the layman, the policymakers and the media treat as if the plastic has polluted the planet, while the real scenario is the plastic is manhandled by us to pollute the earth. Plastic is the victim… Not the culprit.
Tumblr media
Plastic pollution is a very profound phrase. Majority of people are unfamiliar with the actual gist of Plastic pollution. People need to learn more and think more sincerely to understand the genuine meaning of the term ‘plastic pollution’.
Plastic pollution is the pollution that is caused by plastics, but the actual meaning does not end here. It has more intense meaning then we think. Plastic pollution is an affair which is not caused by plastic, but it is in fact a result of actions done by the human beings. People always contemplate plastic pollution as detrimental without considering the real idea of plastic pollution which is a very arguable issue.
How the term plastic pollution is uncertain and ambiguous?
1. Insignificant Blaming:
According to most of the people, it is the plastic films that are to accuse for plastic pollution, whereas human beings are the main cause of the pollution. Not only plastic, but all types of pollution are caused by humans and their irresponsibility. We learn and study about air pollution and water pollution, and always indict humans as the main reason of these pollutions. Then, why is it different in the case of plastic pollution? Why are we not targeting the main reason behind these?
Tumblr media
2. Lack of accurate Knowledge:
As soon as we hear the term plastic pollution, we assume that plastics are causing chaos in the environment. It is due to the lack of knowledge and accuracy of our education. We only learn that plastic pollution is bad, but we don’t learn what actually plastic pollution is and the real causes behind it. Instead we learn to blame plastic films, thinking that plastics are bad. This idea about plastic is completely inappropriate and delusional.
3. Irrelevant Conclusions:
Plastic is not the main reason of plastic pollution, rather negligence is the main cause. This pollution originates mainly from household waste, industries, factories, and poorly recycled plastics, plastics dumped in landfills, lakes and rivers or abandoned in nature. These wastes are carried by the winds, washed by the rains into sewers, streams, rivers, and finally in the oceans. Natural disasters such as floods, storms may be considered as another cause of plastic pollution as well. None of these are caused by plastic films and bags. So why do we always point plastics as bad whenever we perceive the phrase plastic pollution?
4. Misperception:
Most of the times people misjudge thinking that plastic pollution means the pollution caused by plastic and plastic films are bad. Of course the pollution is caused by plastic, but plastic itself cannot pollute the environment and cannot create any hazardous situation. At this point, plastic films are more useful than any other materials. Pollution is always lead by the human being’s imprudence. So, this misperception on the whole subject of plastic pollution should be cleared as soon as possible.
How plastic films are more favorable?
1. Plastic films are sustainable. Plastic films can maintain a certain rate or level, quality or temperature.
2. Plastics are the most durable material than any other material. It does not rot easily and lasts for a really long time.
3. It is waterproof and don’t get damage in water easily.
4. Plastic films prevents any substance, food or other things from damage or contamination of bacteria.
5. Plastic films are very light and so easy to carry and use.
6. Plastic films cost less than any other reusable materials.
7. Plastics are more environment friendly as it produces less greenhouse gases, and uses less energy and natural resources.
8. All plastic can be recycled though it is not always technically or economically possible. Through recycling it can be used endlessly.
Tumblr media
All these distinctive qualities of plastics make plastic different and more useful than any alternate materials. With the utilities and services that we are receiving from plastic films we just cannot blame plastic as the reason of the pollution. It is a very sad reality that for most of the people “plastic pollution” means “plastic is bad”. Human beings love to go with the flow blindly. Sometimes people gets too blind to see and understand the facts. As human beings we jump into conclusions way faster without analyzing the reality. Due to this, we never think about the deepness behind the term plastic pollution. We never try to resolve the problems and try to see the positive aspects. We must protect both environment and plastics for a bright and successful future.
Why are we blaming plastic films and bags instead of rectifying our mistakes? It is high time we changed our ideas and concepts about plastic pollution and take steps according to it.
