Sherlock Holmes 3
(Part 1 of ?)
I need Sherlock Holmes 3 to open with a setup of Watson seeing Holmes in increasingly ridiculous disguises everywhere he goes in town and thinking "I've finally snapped, I'm losing it. this is it. Mary your husband is insane."
Then when he figures out it actually is Holmes, he immediately throws hands. They start it, but Mary finishes it. She gets over the initial shock quickly because they're making a scene, and by heaven, she's not gonna stand for that. She basically drags them home by the ears, kids in tow, and sits everyone down at the breakfast table like nothing ever happened, but like
Watson is glaring. he has a black eye. Holmes is eating nonchalantly with a split lip and a ripped shirt like "can you pass the jam" and the kids just. hand it to him. Mary pours tea. the kids look at Watson. he doesn't move. is he catatonic? Mary butters the kids' toast, asks them how school was yesterday, did the teache--
"YOU ALWAYS DO THIS TO ME--"
"John, please don't raise your voice in front of the children."
"An excellent rule, madam. If I may add--"
"You were DEAD, I SAW IT, I told tHE CHILDREN you were DEAD"

i really liked how in glass onion they included in Blanc & his bf Hugh Grant a mirror to the holmes/watson relationship, which in the modern day is IMMEDIATELY irrefutably read as gay, to take a huge dig at the homophobic Doyle relatives who have been doggedly refusing that fact for like 100 years lmfao

I'm nearly the last person to argue that RDJ!Holmes is a very faithful adaption (even though it's still more faithful than BBC and I won't argue on that either) but no other adaption was ever closer to portraying this sentence:
"I'm lost without my Boswell."
Tumblr media
It's made very clear that Holmes is desperate to live with Watson and that he might go mad without him. We see a lot of Watsons depending on Holmes but not many Holmes' depending on Watsons.
The adaption was also very good in showing the pain of Reichenbach Falls (even if only for a few seconds).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
That scene really hurt. Especially after Moriarty reminds Holmes that he will find a painful end for Watson.
It's these two things that make this adaption still fairly dear to me, even if it lacks in many other regards. An adapation does a lot of things right as long as the relationship between Holmes and Watson is depicted as deep and loving.

Sherlock Holmes 3
(part 2 of ?)
Of course Holmes has a big case lined up already. And of course Watson is dutifully ignoring him. He big mad.
"You would benefit from exercise, Watson. Look at Gladstone, lying there like a dying elephant. You two could be related."
"We both get plenty of exercise, Holmes."
"Debatable. Certainly not for the mind."
Watson stares out the window in front of his typewriter like it's a camera on The Office. You just know he wants to go, but he still big mad. "No."
"No?"
"No."
Holmes' eye twitches. He knocks a picture frame off a side table in passing, pretending it was an accident. The glass breaks.
Watson glares at the man, who's starting to look more like a pouting cat. "That is my mother-in-law."
"She's dead, and you never met her."
The kids are sitting in an armchair in Watson's office watching the proceedings. They're making notes. The eldest thinks this will all make up the next book.
Then Mary walks in, "Time for school, come on." The children sigh and say goodbye, following their mother out.
Watson raises an eyebrow at Holmes once they're alone. "Maybe you should go with them," he says, "since you insist on behaving like a child."
Holmes calmly narrows his eyes. The wheels are visibly turning in his head. What's he thinking?

can’t stop thinking about how before holmes drags moriarty over the cliff, holmes stares at his doctor, closes his eyes, and keeps them closed for the entire fall bc if he dies, he wants watson to be the last thing he ever sees

next time i have to explain amatonormativity and heteronormativity to someone im just gonna make them read the original sherlock holmes case with irene adler and show them adaptations like the Guy Ritchie movies and BBC Sherlock 'cause that's the perfect example right there.
