i know its probably big spoilers, but. it keeps bugging me that Aldertail's mate 'isn't born yet'. i mean, how old is Alder and will their mate be born into the clan she resides? will she be involved in their kithood/training?

clangen sure does love to do that and there was a way in the code to adjust the max age gap between mates but i myself never found it dvjfbs it's just the wording amd what might be behind it in terms of game that icks me

I understand your concerns but let me attempt lay your mind at ease.

First things first, I disallow romantic interactions between mentor apprentice pairs so you'll never see that in RisingClan. Secondly, I played this game years in advance so I can see who is going to end up with who and I can write their relationship appropriately from the start.

Now, here's the part that you may not love to hear, Aldertail is somewhere between 20 and 30 moons (i wasn't keeping track of ages as closely at this point in my notes) and her eventual mate won't be born for a good year or more. But here's the thing, cats don't care as much about ages when it come to those things.

I've anthropomorphized them, yes, and so I won't be portraying any romantic or sexual relationships between adults and juvenile cats, but once a cat is an adult the stigma around dating them kind of goes away in my setting. In the Clans, specifically, if a cat is warrior aged then they have the freedom to choose whichever mate they want.

So yes, Aldertail is going to be a good deal older than her eventual partner but I hope you will trust me to write that in a way that feels compelling and natural and to understand that there isn't anything wrong with the equivalent of a 24 year old falling in love with an older woman of their own volition.

everyone seems to read Flood as aroace and im here reading him as closeted gay/bisexual who doesnt quite *get* why he feels like that with Luna and why Sparrow acts like the moment they are alone, they are going to have at least 736567 litters. not bc he doesnt understand romance or sexuality, but bc it feels super heteronormative but Flood doesnt exactly know how to express it since there arent.. many het couples around (and the one that kind of was there was Russet/Mystique and we know how that went). and the only wlw one is Golden/Scorch and even that one is a whole can of weird worms that poor dude couldnt even try to comprehend on more than surface level of 'two women sharing a bed.. maybe.. idk Scorch is weird'.

like. his dad is trans and he knows it and he is cool with it. but its different than Flood feeling potentially awkward with m/f attraction or 'cats expect me to be attracted to this she-cat and have kits, and i dont understand why i dont feel like it' closeted gay thinking.

That's definitely a possibility! As part of their training, the apprentices did get a comprehensive sex ed course that included things like attraction and sexual preference but you're right that’s very different from actually being in that situation and feeling those feelings.

I think the others are assuming he and Luna will get together less because he's a boy and she's a girl but because she will NOT stop flirting with him and, up until they were alone together, he seemed pretty receptive to it. As well, Sparrowsway does have some assumptions that when presented with a choice, Floodstrike will take the irresponsible option which doesn't help haha.

And Floodstrike IS attracted to Luna. He just suddenly wasn't comfortable and he doesn't even know why. None of this is to shoot you down, by the way, I just think some context is missing, probably because I didn't find a way to work it into the text yet so totally not your fault haha

Gonna be honest, kinda shocked dat so many ppl r interpreting it as Floodstrike’s sexuality; I personally immediately read it as yknow… They JUST came back from a giant battle w/ the exalted, and now Luna’s suggesting a kinda forbidden relationship? O.o Maybe I’m just the dumb one though lolz, I just read it and thought “Oh ya, that definitely sounds like a bad idea”- XD

Yeah, I also was really surprised that people were reading Flood as Ace or not attracted to women. I thought I wrote him to be very clearly attracted to Luna in that piece. I wanted to explore Floodstrike being uncomfortable for reasons that had nothing to do with his sexuality.

I dunno, does kinda feel like some people are assuming that because he was uncomfortable he must be asexual or gay and that just, doesn't sit quite right with me, idk.

i forgot to add bc i forgot the clans seem a whole lot chill with mlm/wlw relationships that city cats do (with.. was it Sparrow that was weirded out by Mystique 'men and women together is natural, its biology' comment?), but it really doesnt seem like there is a lot cats that Flood could look up to for guidance/help figuring himself out if he were gay/bisexual (not counting Oddstripe, but i dont see him going to his dad for that talk.. awkward). seems like most his clanmates are either single, or weirdly het-adjusted (Russet.. sorry boy, i cannot see you with another dude, yoy just reek of hetero energy) or too complicated for Flood to approach (Scorch. Goldenstar is most approachable, but her situationship with Scorch will probably confuse/intimidate him.. he is still young).

like Fogpaw also reads more as a young girl who just doesnt get attraction bc she is young. like 'ewwww adults kissing, lame!!!!!!!!!!!' young girl. but i still see her more as aroace/aro/ace than Flood. Flood really reads to me as closeted gay/bi dude who is just still in stage 1 of thinking about it and cant figure out why he feels uncomfortable whenever he stands to unrelated molly and other cats are like 'omg are you two going to have kits the moment we look away lol'

That's interesting to me that you think Floodstrike doesn't have many people he can go to about this. You're right that going to his dad would be weird for him, especially since Oddstripe is the type to be way too supportive haha, and Russetfrond is a stick in the mud who Flood would never go to for anything, but almost any other Clanmate (except Sagetooth and the cats younger than him) would probably be open and able to discuss the topic with him.

He and Goldenstar are particularly close and even if her own personal relationship isn't very applicable to his situation that doesn't mean that he can't go to his mentor for help when he's struggling.

As well, I wouldn't call Floodstrike closeted even if he is gay or bi. In the Clans, bisexuality is the norm and there would be no closet to put himself into. He may not know, for example, that he only likes men or something but there isn't any stigma around whatever he ends up feeling is his sexuality. Still, he could be gay and processing that and I'm not saying youre wrong for seeing that experience in the way he's written. I just want to remind yall that Floodstrike was not raised in the same environment you likely were and thus will have different opinions and experiences in regards to sexuality as he grows and matures.

abijiwsnskenandjekz you scared me with that scene on the thunderpath, was worried about poor Floodstrike for a second. Love how much he adores his apprentice, those two are so sweet together and if anything happens to them istg /lh,,, also Luna!! I think she and Flood could def be a cute couple, though potentially a purely romantic one if I’m reading into your writing right and Flood’s ace-spec (which as an aroace personal myself I would love to see!! canonically ace characters are so few and far between even these days), but even if I’m wrong I love your work and can’t wait for the next update <3 especially curious to see how this potential war with Sardine goes, I doubt it’ll be as big/organized as the one with Razor since he’s only just come into poor and there’s still some doubts about his leadership, but his personality is also quite different from Razor’s so he could possibly be planning to conduct his campaign very differently (which we’ve already seen a bit of with him killing Bella and her friends and framing/blaming the clans for it)

Haha I'm glad I managed to scare you even though there wasn't a heavy content alert so nothing too dangerous could have happened. I take that as a big compliment.

And as far as Flood goes, I don't think he's aspec, or at least I'm not writing him that way. There are several aspec cats in RisingClan but Floodstrike probably isn't one of them (although like headcanon away, I don't want to shut down anything like that in my fandom). In my mind there are some very specific reasons Floodstrike suddenly felt uncomfortable about the idea of being with Luna and he doesn't understand them because there is still that attraction there.

I think there's a sentence like "he struggled to find an excuse as to why he was suddenly uncomfortable with such an enticing scenario" or something which was meant to read as "this is very appealing to him but hes also feeling uncomfortable and can't explain way exactly" but I can also see how it could be read as asexual tendencies.

As far as Sardine goes, we'll just have to see what he gets up to >:3c I'll gently remind everyone that our next death is this month.

(Trying to distract from Scorch pain) Wondering due to Sparrowpaw's chapter, is it possible for him to end up with Slatekit when they're older or do you have limits on what kinda age gaps relationships have?

I'm not gonna spoil any future relationships so I can't comment on that specifically, but

As far as age gaps go, with cats its not as important that they be close in age, like once youre both warriors, I don't think theres as much stigma around how old each cat is. Especially with the Oddlets and SmokeyGhost kits, theyre only 6 moons apart and if I disallowed that kind of age gap almost no cats would have viable partners. Like I think Nightfrost and Yarrowshade had a bigger age gap than that (with her being at least like 15 moons older).

So yes, something like that is possible. As long as they aren't blood related or a mentor and apprentice pair, Clan Gen allows for adult cats to get together. For instance, I think Aldertail eventually settles down with a cat who won't be born for moons.
