Method acting has the capacity to help actors empathize and understand their roles in a way they may not be able to do otherwise, but bad behavior is still bad behavior. Henry Cavill’s method acting worked wonderfully. So did Heath Ledger’s. Neither of them hurt anyone. They just took time to understand their characters in a different way. Actors are tasked with embodying people they are not. This can be incredibly difficult (which is why they get paid so much.) Sometimes they need to learn about their roles in different ways just as children use different learning methods: auditory, visual, tactile, and people use different love languages: gift giving, quality time. Method acting is not inherently bad, but it’s idea in our culture has been damaged by exactly what Pattinson and Mikelson are referring to: bad portrayals, and bad behavior. Yes, we’re all looking at Jared Leto. Yes, sometimes method acting has an impact on mental health. Acting tends to. It’s not easy. But getting in the mind of someone to try and understand them, so long as you do it with integrity and remain kind, can be effective.
