Izumi: Since you’re all here, can we quickly borrow you before you start practicing?
Izumi: You guys were just looking at the online survey results, right?
Yuki: Yeah.
Izumi: Perfect timing.
Izumi: As you can probably tell from the survey responses, we’ve started putting out streams of past performances…
Izumi: Since we’ve been getting more and more feedback on past performances, it seems like it’s become a topic of conversation among the company.
Kazunari: Definitely.
Tsuzuru: When I was reading through the feedback, I got the sense that a lot of it was related to the supporting characters too.
Muku: That is true.
Yuki: That’s what we were just talking about too.
Izumi: So we were thinking of something interesting for what we could do with that information.

‘A preview to hell’: The year Brazil woke up to the climate crisis

Last weekend, Brazil experienced its ninth heat wave of the year, with 15 states on alert due to high temperatures. These are the last blows of a year that’s on track to be the hottest in history.
In Brazil, since July, all average temperature records have been broken, month after month, according to the National Institute of Meteorology. The residents of Irajá – a neighborhood in the northern part of Rio de Janeiro – know this well. In recent years, the neighborhood has earned the reputation of being the hottest in the city. Here, less than 20 miles from the beaches of Ipanema and Copacabana, the sea breeze isn’t even noticeable, while trees are scarce. This district has nothing to do with the exuberant tropical city plastered all over the postcards for tourists.
On one corner, Giselle Silva sells sardines in boxes packed with ice. Every day, she slathers herself in SPF-80 sunscreen, to work under an umbrella. Despite the shadow, she always ends up burned. “The most stressful thing is the heat: it’s unbearable. It’s gotten a lot worse in recent years. Let me tell you: this is a preview to hell. This summer is going to be terrible,” she says resignedly.
The residents of Irajá know very well that the scorching sun isn’t an isolated phenomenon. “For me, deforestation in the Amazon is the primary reason,” says Waldir Cavalcante, a taxi driver. He’s sitting on a plastic chair next to the door of an air-conditioned supermarket, to feel some relief. His taxi spends the day parked on the opposite sidewalk, in full sun. It doesn’t get even a little shade until four in the afternoon, the owner notes. He remembers a childhood in a very different neighborhood, with dirt roads and many more trees. Nowadays, Irajá is a sea of asphalt.
Heat waves in the cities, the extreme drought that has dried up the rivers of the Amazon, or the floods in the south of the country are all extreme climatic events that have been multiplied this year, as a result of El Niño. This phenomenon warms the environment naturally, but specialists warn that it’s increasingly intense due to climate change. For the director of the Climate and Society Institute (iCS), María Netto, the increase in the frequency and intensity of environmental catastrophes is something that has come to stay. But that’s not all. “There are impacts that aren’t so perceptible, that are growing little by little, such as the increase in temperature, or the variation in the frequency of rain, which [are factors that] have an enormous impact on agriculture and people’s quality of life. These impacts,” she continues, on the phone with EL PAÍS, “especially affect the most vulnerable people.”

like it feels very self aware, as usual
but also kinda like. with laurel hell it felt very much like something that clearly came out of a creative slog of not wanting to do stuff anymore and being contractually bound to it (imo there's like. two songs on that entire album the rest is just kinda eh) and
this one feels almost The Same but in a good way? It feels like there's less effort and I don't necessarily think it's a bad thing? Is it weird for me to say that it's a better album for virtue of being worse? A better album by virtue of being. Less concerned with sounding like something else or like. Like some of these vocals are kinda Meh and ? I like it??
either way babe's show in rio last year was terrible looking forward to the next one that doesn't happen inside a fucking sardine can

11) favorite folklore trivia, please.
Thanks for asking :)
I'd say my favourite is not necessarily related to fairy tales, but to traditions and food.
In Russia, every 1st of March, they celebrate Maslenitsa, which is a big party to commemorate the end of Winter (in Russia, seasons begin and end on the 1st, not the 21st of the month) and welcome Spring. A classic story that has similar traditions and parties all over the world.
They do many things but there are two that I like: 1) they make bliny, crêpes. Lots of bliny for sharing with everyone, even in the street, and there is still snow and all, but they also do dances and games. Often people dress in traditional costumes or with other different apparels, not necessarily dressed up.
And 2) they burn the tchutchela, which is like a big straw doll where people write their wishes for the next year and to get rid of other things, that kind of thing. They put it there, and then they burn the tchutchela.
As I said, this has similarities with other Bye Winter-Hi Spring traditions. And Spain is one of them. We have Carnaval.
Carnaval usually involves getting dressed up and singing and celebrating. It takes place in February 40 days before Easter so the date changes every year but it's about the same thing. You may have seen images from Rio de Janeiro or Mardi Gras or even the Canary Islands, some of the most famous Carnaval-related events of the world. That is what everyone knows and every country gives its own take.
But in Spain, it also involves 2 things. One that is lost mainly, and another one that stays mainly for children celebrations. The one that is lost and not many people remember is "frisuelos de carnaval", or crêpes made specifically in this time. The one that survives is "El entierro de la Sardina" (the burial of the sardine). Without getting into too much detail, it involves writing wishes and other small letters and putting them inside a giant paper made Sardine that will be paraded and cried over around and will end up being burnt, just like the tchutchela.
So this may be obvious to many, as I said many countries and places have similar traditions and it is all Europe after all, but it was a surprise to me the first time I got to experience Maslenitsa in a big festival and it brought me all the way back to my childhood in Spain.

Wenn es um Karneval geht, gibt es doch eigentlich nur zwei Typen von Mensch: die die’s lieben und diejenigen, die die 5. Jahreszeit lieber ganz weit weg von den Jecken aus den Karnevalshochburgen verbringen. Nicht umsonst reisen zur Karnevalszeit viele der sogenannten „Karnevalsflüchtlinge“ gerne in die Berge oder noch weiter gen Süden, um im Februar Sonne zu tanken. Doch nicht nur in Deutschland wird der Karneval ausgiebig gefeiert, auch der Karneval auf den Kanaren sucht seinesgleichen.  Denn auch auf den Kanarischen Inseln werden aufwändige Kostüme genäht und bei strahlendem Sonnenschein auf Galas und großen Straßenumzügen ausgiebig gefeiert. Doch die Kanaren sind der perfekte Ort für Karnevalsmuffel wie für echte Jecken! Warum das so ist, zeigen wir euch heute!

Karneval in Deutschland
Am 11.11. starten die Jecken in Deutschland traditionell um 11:11 Uhr in die fünfte Jahreszeit und übernehmen vor allem in den Karnevalshochburgen das Zepter. Und auch wenn alle Nicht-Karnevalisten dies vermutlich gar nicht so mitbekommen, finden dann schon die ersten Karnevalssitzungen statt und die Karnevalisten basteln und nähen fleißig an ihren Kostümen, Masken und Mottowagen für den Straßenkarneval.Ab Altweiber, oder auch Weiberfastnacht, geht auch der große Straßenkarneval los. Auf Plätzen und Straßen vieler Städte finden Umzüge statt, Krawatten werden abgeschnitten und Bützchen verteilt. Mit viel Fantasie, Musik und Tanz wird Wind und Wetter getrotzt und ausgelassen gefeiert. Die allergrößten Umzüge Deutschlands finden im Rheinland statt: In Köln und Düsseldorf versammeln sich Millionen Menschen auf den Straßen der Städte um den Karnevalsumzug zu bestaunen, Kamelle zu fangen und zu feiern. Spätestens an Aschermittwoch ist dann jedoch alles vorbei: Der Hoppeditz wird zu Grabe getragen und die Fastenzeit beginnt.
Karneval auf den Kanaren - Gran Canaria & Teneriffa
Auch auf den Kanarischen Inseln wird an Karneval ausgiebig gefeiert. Vor allem der Karneval auf Gran Canaria und Teneriffa erfreut sich weltweiter Bekanntheit. Zu Samba-Klängen ziehen große Paraden durch die Straßen von Las Palmas de Gran Canaria und Santa Cruz de Teneriffe. So manch ein Zuschauer fühlt sich nach Südamerika versetzt, denn die Kostüme und Tanzkünste ähneln sehr denen der Tänzer des berühmten Karnevals in Rio. Das kommt nicht von ungefähr, denn durch die Seefahrer haben die Einwohner der Kanarischen Inseln schon lange ein enge Beziehung zu Süd- und Mittelamerika und sich auch im Karneval von den dortigen Traditionen anstecken lassen. Neben den großen Paraden ist die die Gala der Karnevalsköniginnen eines der Highlights des Kanarischen Karnevals. Dort werden die aufwändigen Kostüme präsentiert und schließlich die Karnevalsköniginnen prämiert. Diese Kostüme sind wahre Kunstwerke und können unglaubliche Ausmaße annehmen. Die Kleider werden manchmal 3 m hoch und knapp 400kg schwer. Nicht umsonst laufen viele dieser Kleider auf Rollen…Auf La Palma hingegen findet am Rosenmontag eine ganz andere Art von Karneval, die Fiesta de los Indios, statt. Diese Tradition ist vermutlich eine Parodie auf die Heimkehrer aus den Kolonien, die nach vielen Jahren auf Kuba auf die Kanarischen Inseln zurückkehrten. Diese Heimkehrer stellten ihren Reichtum zur Schau und versuchten, ihre sonnengebräunte Haut mit Puder bedecken. Und nun ziehen die Karnevalisten auf La Palma in weißer Kleidung fein herausgeputzt durch die Straßen von Santa Cruz de La Palma und bewerfen sich zum Klang von kubansicher Musik mit weißem Puder. An Aschermittwoch endet auch auf den Kanaren der Karneval mit dem „Entierro de la Sardina“, der Beerdigung der Sardine. Dabei zieht ein als Trauerzug „verkleideter“ Karnevalszug durch die Straßen in Richtung Strand, wo symbolisch eine Sardine aus Pappmaché verbrannt wird, und das Ende der ausgelassenen Feierlichkeiten besiegelt.
Karneval auf den Kanaren - Fuerteventura
Auch auf Fuerteventura finden während der Karnevalszeit Feiern statt, auch wenn diese ganz anders aussehen als die auf den Nachbarinseln. Zwar gibt es auch hier in den Dörfern und Städten Königinnen-Galas statt, aber die Hauptdarsteller des hiesigen Karnevals sind Seifenkisten! In der Hauptstadt Puerto del Rosario finden zu Land und zu Wasser Feiern statt, die am ehesten mit deutschen Seifenkisten-Rennen zu vergleichen sind. Mit den sogenannten Arretrancos und Achipencos, einfallsreichen handgefertigten Fahrzeuge und Booten bzw. Flößen werden in Puerto de Rosario lustige Rennen und Regatten veranstaltet. Und abends wird man in diesen Tagen in vielen Clubs und Bars verkleidete Menschen auf ausgelassene und zum Teil verkleidete Menschen treffen.
Karnevalsferien auf Fuerteventura
Auch wenn der Karneval auf den Kanarischen Inseln ausgiebig gefeiert wird, ist der Karneval auf Fuerteventura einzigartig, aber unaufdringlich. Wer also schon immer mal bei warmen Temperaturen in Karnevalskostüm feiern gehen wollte, ansonsten aber die Tage gerne am Strand und in bzw. auf den Wellen verbringen möchte, ist hier genau richtig.Vor allem bei uns im Norden der Insel ist die 5. Jahreszeit kaum zu bemerken. Fuerteventura bietet sich also eher für Karnevalsmuffel als Reiseziel für die Karnevalsferien an, um den riesigen Umzügen und Paraden zu entgehen. Diejenigen, die schon ab November mit den Füßen scharren und sich vor all den Kostümideen gar nicht entscheiden können, finden vor allem auf Teneriffa und Gran Canaria farbenfrohe Umzüge und tolle Feste die bis tief in die Nacht andauern.

PINHAIS: A Testimony of A Living History

A stone's thrown from the sea, Matosinhos is the epicenter of the canning industry to the north of Portugal. In that area alone, 52 fish factories were installed, today only two remain and one of them is PINHAIS. The company was founded in 1920 by António Rodrigues Pinto Pinhal together with his brother Manuel Rodrigues Pinto Pinhal, natives of Espinho, who initially dedicated themselves to salting fish in a small warehouse, and Luíz Alves da Silva Rios, who is believed to have launched the challenge to the two fishing brothers to set up a company dedicated to the manufacture of canned fish, to which Luíz de Sousa Ferreira later joined. With the construction of the factory, the company started to produce canned sardines, mackerel and horse mackerel in olive oil, spicy olive oil, tomato and spicy tomato sauce. “We still maintain the original process. From the treatment of the fish to the packaging, everything is done by hand,” guarantees António Pinhal, grandson of the founder and currently responsible for the family business that is in the third generation.
He was only eight when he had his first memory linked to Pinhais. Hand in hand with his father, he saw trawlers loaded with fish arriving at Matosinhos pier on a Saturday morning. “I always did that at the weekend, it was happy to see the seagulls approaching, it was a sign that there was a lot of fish”, he tells The Observer. Later, he was in his fourth year in Economics at the University of Porto when his father asked him to work with him. “My cousin was his right hand, but he got sick and called me. I went to the auction to buy the fish, did the commercial and export part. Only when my cousin passed away did I join the staffs of the company directly and, as a working student, I finished the Economics course at night. ”

For a decade, António was responsible for carefully choosing the raw materials for preserves, a function that allows him to distinguish the quality of a sardine with the naked eye today. “The sardine caught at four or five in the morning is better than the hake at midnight, I can see that from the eyes, the gills and the scales”, he says, adding that it was also on the wooden base of the trucks used to transport the baskets of fish that could take the real test of the nine. “I would take the sardine and throw it to the wood, if it jumped it had been caught in the morning, if it was quiet it was because it had been caught earlier.”
When he finished his Economics course, he already had several job offers, but his father said: either the bank or the factory. “The bug got into me and I ended up staying here. I don't know if I did it right or wrong, but I don't regret it.”

While most canning companies have industrialized over the years, Pinhais has decided to remain faithful to artisanal production, despite the various crises. “There was a Portuguese olive oil supplier that sold the product much cheaper and one day he asked my father if he didn't want to buy a car, which at that time cost about 100 contos, with the money he saved. My father did not have a license nor did he know how to drive, so he refused.” It was like this for four years, until it was discovered that this oil was adulterated. “The containers that other firms distributed to the United States were recalled and the canning industry crisis started there.”
In 1935, Pinhais launched Nuri, a brand with the same products, but aimed at the international market. “One of the partners in the company was my uncle, a public relations person who spoke several languages. It was he who discovered the first international markets and when he went to Spain he met a very beautiful Spaniard named Nuri, that's how he decided to name the brand. ”

During the 40 years that he is at the helm of the canning industry, António Pinhal confesses that the most difficult moment was when the European Union's share of fishing emerged. The golden season in Matosinhos was from June to October, which forced the official to go buy fish in Sines, Peniche, Figueira da Foz, Spain or France. Nothing that would move him or make him lose his faith, after all the Pinhal family is deeply Catholic and in António's office are visible old cans, black and white photographs of the family, but also saints and candles.
“My father went to Mass twice a day and until three years ago we used to pray the rosary half an hour before the people left.” At 4:30 pm, someone put a cassette in the tape recorder and workers exchanged fish scissors for the rosary. “We stopped doing that when we hired people with other religions, it didn't make sense to be imposing that. It used to be different, people were more devout, especially when we talk about a fishing community. Times change and we have to accept those changes. ”

The fish arrives every morning through a special door, leaves the boxes and is immersed in an aluminum container in cold water and salt where the brine is given. “The large sardine is 40 minutes, the medium is 15 minutes, and the petinga, 5,” says António Pinhal. After this process, sardines, mackerel and horse mackerel are spread on large marble tables, where the head and the gut are removed with a small knife. "This is a normally mechanized process, but here we do it by hand to ensure that the gut comes out completely."
Headless and with a spine, the fish is placed one by one on a metal grid and dipped in a tank with cold water to remove the salt. The rooks loaded with fish are distributed in carts that enter a greenhouse at 100 degrees for 10 to 12 minutes. They come out of there hot and during the cooling process all the moisture and grease drain out. “Thus, both water and fat do not go into the can and oil, when added, turns yellow and not brown. This is one of our major differences from the competition,” explains António Pinhal.
It is only after this phase that the fish is placed in containers to then be cut by hand with scissors to fit in the can of preserves, which can then carry tomato sauce, cucumber, carrot or chilli pickles. In this assembly line, several employees dressed in white are seated in a row, from the cap to the wellies, passing through the waterproof apron. Many have their names written on the back and pillows to ensure comfort throughout the day.

Emília Vaz is in the section dedicated to homemade tomato sauce. She is 67 years old and is the oldest employee of Pinhais. She started at 18 and at the end of 2020, she will retire. With the reddish apron and the sweat on her forehead, she proudly shows the marks on her body that the years of work left him. “I've already cut myself on the toes with the cans and scalded my foot to make tomato sauce,” she says, adding that the factory is her second home and her colleagues are part of her family. She treats them by their first name and says she likes to teach those who arrive there for the first time. Among all, she is known as the “Emília da Afurada” (Emília, The Sharp). “In the past, I crossed the Douro in a small boat, but nowadays I take the bus to Boavista and then take the metro to get here.”
About 30,000 cans come out of Pinhais every day, essentially filled with sardines. There is no waste around here, proof of this is that the fish's head, tail and gut is sent to the flour industry to fertilize the soil and the remaining oil is supplied to the soap industry. On the mechanical mat, the cans stuffed with fish and other ingredients arrive in a veritable rain of Portuguese olive oil and are then closed by another machine. Still greasy, the closed can is washed in a tank with water at 100 degrees and sterilized for 60 minutes to eliminate any bacteria and will be packed by hand. Three months is the minimum time to stay in the warehouse to gain flavor, only after this period of maturation is the canned ready to go on its journey.
Célia Ferreira is responsible for the packaging department and in the 15-minute snack break she is the only one in the room to wrap cans of preserves. “I can eat at home,” she says, smiling, guaranteeing that she likes what she does. Her mother, aunts and cousins ​​passed through Pinhais, so it would be almost inevitable for Célia to also work at the Matosinhos factory, where 1,200 cans per day pass through her hands. The natural employee of Leça da Palmeira walks surrounded by cards and packages painted in yellow, green, red or blue and knows the destination of each one by heart. "These go to Australia, those to the United States and those to the Czech Republic.

In 2016, the Pinhal family sold its stocks to an Austrian agent, the current owner of the brand. “It was a decision motivated by the fishing crisis, there were no orders, we lacked liquidity and we thought it was necessary to take this step. He is a trustworthy person, he has worked with us since 1985, he belongs to a family business connected to cereals. At one time, he was our best customer, he represented more than 70% of our exports, and he became the only way to save this firm,” recalls António Pinhal. Despite the change, everything seems to have remained. “The only premise was to leave everything as it is.” Currently, Pinhais exports 90% of its production to countries such as Austria, the United States, the Philippines, Denmark or France. Here, the points of sale are limited to gourmet stores. “Quantity is not quality. We bet on quality, while in large stores we buy a can of sardines at 0.90 cents, ours costs € 2.50. The labor is very expensive, we work with 14 or 15 stages, the other factories have only three,” justifies António Pinhal.
Extending the range of products is not part of the brand's plans, which work on original marble tables from 1920 and see their work space limited to small fish. However, there is a need to bring something new to the market, so next year, Pinhais will use leftover sardines to market patês. The online store was launched just in time for the pandemic and in the summer of 2021 a live museum is expected on the factory premises, a project that has lived in the drawer for several years and bureaucracy has delayed. “We want to make it known what the tradition of the canning industry was, showing, at the same time, how we work.”
António Pinhal is not afraid of the future and says that only the pandemic forced small changes in the company, such as the acrylics arranged among the workers, a laboratory converted into a quarantine room and more mechanized transport processes. The grandson of the founder of Pinhais eats preserves religiously every Friday at lunch. “Canning tins are normally six years old as an expiration date, but my father always preferred old ones that were 15 or 20 years old. Every Friday at lunch he opens an old can, watched, smelled and asked me to eat a piece. After five minutes, if I didn't feel bad, I would eat it. It was your guinea pig and I thought it was funny. ”

No matter if it was the desert of the American Southwest, or the deserts of Africa, the beauty of the glittering mica reflecting the soft glow of moonbeam was the same.
That was the desert charm, you told Joseph in a whisper as his grandson and friends slept soundly in the back seats of the van, squished together like enormous sardines as they snored in the crooks of each other’s necks.
The two of you decided to take the night shift. Two old biddies who had trouble sleeping because for the first time in nearly fifty years you were able to catch up on the events of your lives. The helicopter ride in was hell on your old bones, but the pleasant company of a stray Boston Terrier who had taken a liking to you made it bearable at least.
Said dog was currently sleeping on your lap, lulled by the tread of the jeep as you drove, undisturbed by the clutch or the constant shifting of gears.
You told Joseph about life after New York, how eventually you settled down in a small desert community in New Mexico to work dig sites, and the discoveries you’d made there. He told you about his adventures in real estate investments, the opportunities he had to travel the world and see new faces.
Not so subtle of an insert into the conversation was the nugget that he had used the opportunity to look for you, always keeping an eye out in every museum and library he stumbled across, wishing and hoping to catch a glimpse. He’d never thought to look in the southwest. You replied that it was a great hiding place. Many celebrities and artists sought refuge there, comingling with the everyday folks, perfect for someone like you who was a mix of scientific celebrity and ordinary person.
But he tells you you’re wrong. You are anything but ordinary. Hamon training over the years has kept you beautiful. The same sweet, youthful face, with the addition of a few frown lines here and there and the tiniest of crow’s feet from squinting at the dirt for years, some laugh lines from the joyful moments he hoped you had. And, his heart raced when he caught glimpses, the smallest strands of hair the color of starlight when the moon managed to gently caress you with it's light.
“I should have never left you behind.” He murmurs, just loud enough that your eyes widen at the implications.
“I’ve made so many mistakes in life that I have been able to move past, but I should have never left you.”
The ride on is awkward. You don’t say anything for many minutes. Not until you finally gather the strength to address the elephant in the room.
“You gave me freedom beyond my wildest imaginations when you got married to her.” You replied. “I was able to do things I could have never done if I had stayed in New York. There wasn’t much money in the museum. In New Mexico… I have opportunities.”
You prattle on in a soft whisper about the people you’ve met. The dances you’ve attended on the Pueblos. The life you’ve made for yourself by the Rio Grande. Out there you could hone your potential. You awakened your ability to see Stands in your early 20’s, and yet no spirit manifested for you. But that was alright. You were more than capable of taking care of yourself when the situation called for it. And now that this stray with a powerful fighting spirit was with you, you would never have to be afraid ever again.
Joseph is silent. You continue on.
You tell him what is most important now is that his grandson has a mother to go home to, that his wife doesn’t lose their only child, that he doesn’t have to suffer the fate of outliving his bloodline. What matters is that they all survive, and this curse is at last laid to rest. Until the moon starts to sink beneath the skyline, and the sky goes from the color of midnight to the blushing hues of purple and pink, you try to convince the both of you that this mistake of not staying together was for the better.
The resentment of him leaving you for another woman peeks through the façade of your calm every now and again, but you wait until it passes before again filling the silence with insistences that you’re fine. Everything is fine. The hands of fate have woven the webs of your destinies, as it happens to be you won’t be together as you naively thought when you were younger.
It isn’t until you pull over, preparing to exit the car to wake the next driver, when Joseph gently but firmly takes your face in his hands.
His kiss is warm, scratchy, almost like being ensconced in a wool blanket as his beard tickles you. At first you resist, but only for a moment, the old heartache resurfacing.
When you part your lips for him, suddenly you’re transported back in time. It’s the 40’s all over again. You both are clumsy young adults caught in a whirlwind of a romance that neither of you realize will end in heartbreak. The two of you are so caught up in your young lives that you can’t see the future in which you will separate tragically, unfulfilled promises steeping in regret like a tea bag left sitting in lukewarm water for so long the drink has turned bitter with age.
“I want you back.” he murmurs against your lips.
You’ve been disappointed too many times to cry at this. But what starts the tears is the frightful reality that he means what he says when he tells you that he is going to follow you to New Mexico, to the ends of the earth, he doesn’t care where. As soon as Holly is safe, he is going to leave his life behind and give what he has left of it to you, the one who is the most deserving. The one whom he so selfishly robbed of a life when you were a frightened young child clinging desperately to the one greatest love you knew.
The sweetness of his promise… The hope…
This stays with you until your dying breath. Giddy laughter at the possibility of a life with the one you love, that only serves to stoke the wrath of the blonde vampire god of the night who will later have his hand buried into the warm sunshine pulsing, permeating deep within the chamber of your heart.
But for now, there is no death. No danger. No mission of rescue. There is only the two of you. Kissing passionately under the last remaining cover of starry night, before the desert sand is illuminated in golden sunlight.

A play with a dog theme, huh? I mentioned it was my first time playing an animal during “The Adventure for Sardines”. But this sure brings back memories.
Of course, I’m gonna do lots of research on dogs so I can properly show their movements and characteristics this time as well.
It’s fun thinking about the differences from our cat play we did in the past.
What’s more, we also have some action scenes this time.
We’re gonna claw with our nails, bite, and jump around…
I'd like to create show-stopping action scenes by incorporating a dog’s unique movements.

I’m listening to stories from people who own dogs in order to prepare for my role in the play.
They have a dog named Zabi back at Tsumugi-san’s family home, right?
Tsumugi-san told me that ever since he was a student, he used to go for walks with Zabi, play with him, and even take naps with him.
Apparently, he’s also made toys for Zabi before with Tasuku-san’s help.
He mentioned that seeing our dog-themed play made him want to see Zabi.
After listening to Tsumugi-san, I feel like I wanna meet Zabi too.
Should I ask him to set that up for me next time?

He’s always stating it’s his duty to protect the townspeople.
Also, he cherishes Chacha who he grew up with like brothers.
Rio helps his friends and bravely stands up against his enemies…
He’s a great, reliable guy.
I think Rio’s cool and I respect him.
Just like Rio… I always want to protect Director and those guys too.
I-it’s important to to share the same thoughts and feelings as the role you play, you know!
So I’m gonna become a more reliable guy, just like Rio.

Tenma: Yeah, there’s a scene in our upcoming story where the dogs track a scent.
Taichi: By the way, Ten-chan, do you have a fave smell?
Tenma: Let’s see… well, it’s pretty typical, but delicious smells that waft from the kitchen get me excited.
Taichi: I feel you! You get hella hyped when you come home and catch a whiff of somethin’ nice, right~.
Tenma: How about you, Taichi?
Taichi: On the topic of food, then maybe the smokiness during festivals? It sets the mood and it’s super excitin’. I also love the smell of the sun when my futon’s aired out. And I admire the scent of cool perfume~.
Tenma: The smell of soap and fabric softener is also a typical answer. I see… it might be possible to add conversations about and scents and fragrances to our ad-libs and daily jokes.

Algarve Food Recap Algarve explodes with flavors and variety of dishes and seafood clearly dominates the score - it reflects the coastal location of the region as well as its deep Portuguese and Arabic historical influences. As always we tried to seek out truly authentic local dishes (none of the fancy Michelin stuff but where the locals go for the freshest seafood). Freshly grilled sardines were absolutely fabulous, and another traditional Algarve dish - cataplana aka seafood stew made in a copper shell - was to die for. Tenma: My character, Rio, has a strong sense of justice. After all, it is his job to protect the citizens.
Tenma: He also has a strong attachment to ChaCha, the two grew up together so they have a brotherly bond.
Tenma: Helping his friends, bravely facing enemies….He’s a good guy you can count on.
Tenma: I think Rio’s pretty cool, I respect him.
Tenma: Rio and I are similar in that way… I want to protect the Director and everyone, always.

Taichi: Don’t dogs have a super good sense of smell?
Tenma: In this play, there’s scenes where the dogs track a scent.
Taichi: Speaking of, does Ten-chan have a favorite scent?
Tenma: Well...I mean, it’s kind of an easy answer, but I always like it when there’s a delicious smell drifting from the kitchen.
Taichi: I get it! Coming home to a yummy smell is always exciting~.
Tenma: What about you?
Taichi: If we’re talking food, I guess the smokey smell you find at festivals? That mixed with the atmosphere gets me really pumped up.
Taichi: But I also love the smell of sun-dried futons, and the scent of a cool cologne~
Tenma: The smell of soap and fabric softener is a good one, isn’t it.
Tenma: Now that I think about it...it’s possible to incorporate stories about scents into ad-libs and everyday material.
Taichi: Cool! That could be interesting.
Tenma: Alright, I should talk to the Summer Troupe guys about this, right away.

just reread So I Come To You My Love and i am soft!!! they're awkward, smitten teens trapped in the bodies of adults
Awwwww!!!!! THANK YOU for rereading!!!! So I Come To You My Love was so softtt and so much fun to write. To start off this post, here's the song I listened to a bunch when I wrote it.
I love thinking about Beth and Ruby on the plane. I had this fantasy of them away together on a trip and finally having rest and non-stressful adventures. I figured they'd be typical Americans and want to go somewhere romanticized like Paris (especially bc it seems like a place that American Black folk have identified is a relatively comfortable and safe place to travel). Like can you imagine them doing all the cute touristy things in Paris? Walking about looking gorgeous and eating bomb food? MY HEART.
One day when I have more time, I want to do a vacation series where everyone gets to take a break. They deserve it. I also really want to write Brio on a beach.
Lmao, I'm just going to quote an enormous, self-indulgent passage now:
But, historically it had unfolded the other way around. There had never been a precedent of Beth being the one to smoke bomb out for a few weeks...
Of course, she wasn’t smoke bombing anywhere, slipping away into the ether. This was a long-planned vacation, months in the making, decades in the dreaming. There had been careful plotting to adjust the slack in the printing schedule and there had been deliberate calendering with the children’s summer activities. And well, Rio knew where to find her -- both where her rental was in Paris and where she more permanently lived (with him).
And it’s not like they hadn’t talked every morning and every night and sometimes in between of these past three weeks
God, she feels clingy and codependent and too much like her teenagers. Ruby had called Stan half as much.
And she’s still itchy.
…And kind of oily now?
She keeps scratching at a spot on one of her shoulders, at her palms, blotting at her face.
The people around her are going to think she has some sort of disease.
Except for Ruby, who knows.
So, Beth sits there, tapping, scratching, sighing into the void of time.
And it shouldn’t be so much of a surprise when a little more than halfway through the flight, Ruby’s hand emerges from its blanket cocoon to clamp down on Beth’s jiggling leg. Regardless, Beth all but levitates a foot into the air, gasping.
“Chill out.”
I loved writing this part!!!! Ha, and now I have it as a personal writing headcanon that I like for Beth to startle, and i always have it in the first drafts of everything (and then i write out bc i have control!!!) and I love writing her children startling just like her.
Oh my god, I'm direct quoting the whole thing now. I tried to argue to sothischickshe a while back that AO3 should allow us to annotate or endnote fics to be able to add like a director's comments feature on it. Oh well!
“So… message him again?”
Beth cants her head low, letting her hair fall to obscure her face.
“He’s being… you know how he is.”
“I… do but I’m not sure I want to know what that means.” Ruby pauses, sitting with it. “Oh my god.” She clamps her hand down again, this time on Beth’s wrist. “Does he want you to take naked pictures in the bathroom?”
Beth tries to snatch her arm away, flailing in the seat.
“What if Delta sees your nudes?! Please, tell me you did not do that in that sardine box ten feet away from me, Elizabeth. Marks.”
“I didn’t. I would never.”
Someone a row over shushes them.
Ruby relinquishes her grip to press at her eyebrows. “Y’all are too much.”
Beth shrugs. “He really liked those caftans we bought at that boutique.”
Ugh, they're CUTEEEEE!!! I love the lead trio, but damn if just wouldn't love more one-on-one Ruby & Beth bff scenes. Beth has a particular type of emotional vulnerability with Ruby, and I love them being the same age and having come up together.
And, in regards, to Brio~~ like you know our guy was like mad texting the whole time they were apart. He tried to play it kind of cool for the first few days, wanted to let B have her space, but they end up getting all itchy sleeping apart and it just ~d e v o l v e s. He's like already thinking about when they would get to have their own vacation together, looking up the plane tickets.
I don't imagine them being ridiculously unboundaried about the calling but they're navigating a more clingy relationship stage and they finally have reason to not be immediately near and they miss each other. Beth is having this really wonderful time with her friend, but during her downtime she wants to call the person she's romantically in love with and eagerly share all the details. I enjoyed imagining a Beth who is slipping into the territory where she has the comfort-level of being able to pick up the phone without overthinking it and call Rio (ala her sister and Ruby). And Then starting to realize that she has that comfort and being like O H. D:
And of course, I loved writing the kiss. My partner and I used to do long-distance at the beginning of our relationship. Even now that we have lived with each other for many years, when we're apart, I really look forward to that first kiss and I liked sharing that with Brio. Especially, as a couple that has historically~~ textually~~ not done much kissing.
I'm a sucker for the Big Romance kiss.

Meeting Oikawa in Rio
Summary: Reader is a travelling photographer who encounters Tooru Oikawa in Brazil. 
Words: 2.6k ( i went a little overboard I’m so sorry) 
Warnings: none; strangers to friends to lovers kind of idea, slow burn, beach vibes, idk that’s mostly it 
a/n: This is a request for the lovely @trash-revel​!! 💖 I’m so sorry this took forever it’s probably filled with typos and grammatical errors! That said, I loved writing this 💗 Also, sorry if it’s a little too long, I felt a little too inspired! I tried to sprinkle a little bit of Portugese in it with the help of google translate (if anyone here speaks portugese I hope I didn’t butcher it and hopefully did it some justice).

As a travelling photographer, you were living like a nomad, always on the move without a home base to call your own. Instead of renting a house or an apartment, you usually stayed in hotels or airbnbs. Your goal was to travel the world and capture all of the beauty you could find in it… and little did you know that the most beautiful thing you were going to find was on your travels in Brazil.
You woke up early that day, unsure if you were actually on a healthy sleeping schedule or if it was the jet lag talking. You were enjoying your morning coffee out on the balcony of your airbnb in Rio as you watched the sunrise over the beach. The water of the ocean gently tumbled into waves onto the shore as it reflected the vibrant gradients of the morning sky. If you squinted hard enough, you could faintly see Christ the Redeemer in the distance on the mountain. After a yawn and a deep stretch, you decided that it was time for you to get ready for your daily adventure. 
You prepared yourself for the unforgiving heat by slathering sunscreen all over your body and wearing loose-fitting clothes. As you got dressed, you could immediately feel the fabric cling to you from the humidity. You made a note to bring deodorant with you because you knew way too well that chafing was only inevitable on hot, humid days. You packed your bag with your camera lenses, a couple of water bottles, some snacks, an ice pack, sunscreen, and other things that will help you navigate your new temporary home. You finished off your look with a hat and your camera slung around your neck so you could have easy access if you see anything interesting to shoot.  
After reading up on some of the attractions in Rio, you decided to visit Tijuca national park. You’ve been wanting to get out on your feet after an incredibly taxing, twenty-one-hour flight from Australia, plus there was no way you could pass up getting shots of all of the diverse flora and wildlife. Your plan was to hike as deeply into the forest as you could and then stop at the botanical garden to relax and do some sightseeing. 
You sat at the bus stop, just minding your own business and intermittently reference the bus schedule on your phone, when a voice pulled you from your thoughts. 
“Erm… perdão,” said a voice that was very much not from around here. 
You peeked over to see a Japanese man, probably in his mid-twenties, trying to talk to an elderly man sitting on the bench at the bus stop. 
“Este carro... uh... é para o lugar da árvore?” the Japanese man said tentatively, clearly struggling with the language barrier. 
The elderly man blinked a few times, and responded with “Que?”
You were equally as confused. Based on the little bit of Portuguese that you knew, you were pretty sure he was asking for a car to drive him to a tree. 
The Japanese man grew a bit frustrated and scratched the back of his neck. You could tell the poor guy was embarrassed, so you tried to see if you could help him out. 
“Do you speak English?” You ask the Japanese man. 
He locks eyes with you, and it hits you how handsome he is. His smile is disarming and his eyes are gentle. His physique is well-built like a professional athlete, and he was dressed like one too. 
"I do," he responds. "Maybe you can help me. I'm looking for the bus that goes to Tijuca national park." 
"You're in luck," you say, gesturing to the map on your phone. "That's where I'm headed."
You both boarded the bus, which was packed like sardines, and made some small talk along the way. 
“Tooru Oikawa,” he says with an outstretched hand. “I’m a volleyball player.”
“(Y/n) (l/n),” you reply with your hand in his and give it a shake. “I’ve never met a professional athlete before.” 
“It’s been a dream of mine since I was a kid,” he smiles and proudly runs his fingers through his tousled hair. “Are you a photographer? I just noticed your fancy camera.” 
“Yeah,” you cradled your camera in your hand and fiddled around with the lens. “I wanted to check out the wildlife here and maybe try out some new techniques. I figured the national park would be a good place to start.” 
“You know, shutterbug,” he says, striking a pose. “ I have some experience in front of cameras. Not to brag or anything, but I’ve been in a few local magazines back at home.” 
You roll your eyes and chuckle; this man really is something else. He’s definitely charismatic and charming -- not to mention very handsome -- although there’s something else to him that you can’t put your finger on. There was something about his smile that just didn’t sit right with you. It reminds of you of how you were at family dinners; despite how much was on your mind, you just kept smiling to avoid rocking the boat. But, maybe it was just your imagination.
You arrive at your destination, depart the bus and find an uphill path that leads deeper into the forest. The two of you decide to walk together and continue to get to know each other. You tell him about how you were a travelling photographer and you had a lot of your works published in different magazines. You also tell him about your travels and all of the places you’ve visited. 
“What’s one place you haven’t gone to yet?” He asks as he kicks a stray pebble. “Where do you plan on going once you’re done here?”
“Definitely Japan,” you say. “That’s up there on my list, especially the countryside. I just think the scenery there would be amazing to see in person.”
“I’m from the country, you know” he said with a wink. “Maybe we’ll have another fateful encounter there and I’ll show you around sometime~” 
You can’t help but hide a blush from hinting at your cheeks. 
Despite how flirtatious he is, he seems genuinely interested in you. And you’re equally impressed by him; the way he talks about his history with volleyball demonstrates his deep passion for the sport. He talks about volleyball as if he was knight preparing for battle; he goes into detail about strategies, formations, techniques, everything that makes a good volleyball player. He also goes into detail about his past rivals, although there was an edge to his voice when he talked about them. You decide to not pry too much on the subject. 
“So what you’re saying is that you’re kind of a big deal,” you say. 
“I mean,” he responds with a wink. “If you think so, then I won’t argue.”
That’s when a toucan flutters out from the bushes and nests into his hair. Oikawa panics and flails his arms, trying to shoo away the bird, but it seemed to have no intention of leaving his locks. 
“Wait,” you say, steadying your camera in front of your eye. “Don’t move.” 
The look on Oikawa’s face jumps from surprised, to angry, to embarrassed. He crosses his arms and pouts with red cheeks; it seems he was trying to make a good impression on you and the toucan sabotaged his plan. His pout slowly relaxes when he sees the look on your face; you were so mindful about the angle, the lens, and the lighting; it reminded him about how he is with volleyball. He also had to admit, you had a really cute smile; he simply smiles and accepts his defeat. 
“Sorry,” you say, snapping a few more. “I’m almost done.”
“No no,” he says. “Take your time.”
That’s when you notice something different about him; this smile seemed totally different from how he was smiling when the two of you were on the bus. The way he smiled then seemed routine or rehearsed. This smile, however, was enough to make your chest flutter. You swear if more people saw a smile like this from him, the world would be a much better place. 
“You better send me a copy of those,” he teases, sticking his tongue out at you. “Someday, people might pay good money for them.
“You know it,” you say with a giggle. Although, you couldn’t tell if he was complimenting your work or if he was just that full of himself. 
You walk up to him and gently lift the toucan off his head and toss it into the air for it to fly away. 
“Well, I hate to leave you like this,” he said, pulling out his earbuds from his pocket. “But I need to get my afternoon run in. I look forward to bumping into you again soon, shutterbug~” 
With that, he jogged away, leaving you in a small cloud of dust. The nickname sticks with you and endears you more to him. You stand there with a smile on your face, as you hoped that this wouldn’t be your last encounter with him. 
And it wasn’t. As a matter of fact, bumping into Oikawa became a near-daily occurrence for the two of you. You always took the same bus to the national park where he went for jogs and you went for photo ops. Although, the two of you eventually exchanged numbers and made plans to hang out somewhere else. 
Every time you talk to Oikawa you always learn something new about him; you learn that his favourite food is milk bread, that his best friend, Iwaizumi, is taking sports science in college, and that he was captain of the volleyball team in his third year of high school. You tell him about your home country and what it was like growing up there, and how you’ve been pursuing photography since you got your first DSLR camera. You tell him about your favourite foods, your favourite music, and your favourite movies. 
One evening, after Oikawa was done practice, the two of you decided to make plans to grab dinner and go for a walk on the beach. At dinner, the sun was still high enough in the sky that it wasn’t quite sunset, but it was low enough in the sky that the temperature started to cool off.
The more you think about it, the more it starts to feel more like a date. 
“What kind of photos do you take?” he asks. “Now that I think about it, I don’t think you’ve shown me any of your work.”
You take out your phone to open up your digital portfolio and you hand it over to him. He scrolled through your gallery and saw various shots from nature, urban settings, and studios.  He came across a folder in your gallery labelled ‘100 Strangers.’
“What’s this all about?” he asked, flipping through the images. 
“Oh, that’s just a long-term project I’m working on,” you said. “My goal is to take portraits of 100 strangers that I meet in my travels and post little blurbs about them.”
“I’d offer to pose for a picture for you,” he says, leaning in as he rests his elbows on the table. “But it seems like we’re not really strangers to each other anymore.”
You can tell he’s flirting, but you don’t let him get away with it that easily. “I still have those shots of you and the toucan, you know.”  
He flinches and hunches over in embarrassment. “You’re a meanie, shutterbug~”
“What?” you say as you take one last bite of your food. “I love that picture. It’s cute.”
He suppresses a grin as he digs his fork into his food. He tries to act nonchalant, but the blush on his cheeks betray him. 
“So,” he says, bringing his food to his mouth. “You think I’m cute?”
A blush sneaks onto your cheeks and you avert your eyes from him. From the corner of your eye, you see him grin to himself in satisfaction. You avoid answering him entirely and just ask the waiter for the bill. 
It’s now sunset and the two of you were walking on the beach. You decide to take off your sandals and just enjoy the feeling of the warm sand in between your toes. The breeze was perfect, and it was enough to take the edge off the humidity. You then take out your camera and start adjusting the settings on it. It was golden hour, after all. 
You glance over at Oikawa, who ‘s just at the edge of the water and dipping his toes in. He looks out onto the horizon, where you could barely make out the silhouettes of the mountains, and takes in the balmy breeze. The wind swished through his hair elegantly, sweeping it just the right way that made it look effortlessly styled. You steadied your camera and snuck in a couple of shots. 
He looks over his shoulder at you upon hearing the shutters and grinned. “Couldn’t resist a photoshoot of me, shutterbug?” He held up a peace sign and placed a hand on his hip, awaiting more shots from you. 
After getting a few more shots in, you join him at the shore and dip your toes in, jumping at how surprisingly cold the water was. 
“You didn’t answer my question, you know,” Oikawa says, turning to face you. 
“Huh?” you chuckle nervously and tuck a few strands of hair behind your ear. “What question?”
“Do you think I’m cute?”
You hesitated and wiped your clammy palms on your shorts. You definitely developed feelings for Oikawa, and you were sure he felt the same way about you. The problem, though, is that you were hesitant to jump into a serious relationship, given all of the travelling that you do. 
“I...” you murmur, nervously wiggling your toes into the sand. “Listen, I don’t want to get your hopes up. I travel a lot  and I get so busy with work that I--”
“Hey,” he chuckles while scratching the back of his neck, trying to mask his disappointment. “It’s totally alright if you don’t think so, I just thought--”
“N-no it’s not that,” you blurt out. “I don’t want to jump into anything serious only to have it ruined when I eventually start travelling again. I really do like you, Tooru, but I don’t think that would be very fair to you.”
Suddenly, you found yourself merely inches away from him. He softly chuckles and places his hand underneath your chin to tilt your face up to meet his. You look up at him, your face hot from both nervousness and excitement. 
“You put a lot of pressure on yourself, don’t you?” he says, as if he wasn’t one to talk. “Don’t worry about all of that stuff. How do you feel right now?”
You feel his fingers gently combing through the ends of your hair, sending tingling sensations all through your body. Your pulse quickens as he places a hand on the small of your back; he doesn’t go any further though. 
“I…” you murmur, leaning in and placing your hands on his chest. “I think you’re really cute.” 
He lets out a hearty chuckle and wraps both of his arms around you to pull you in closer to him. 
“Well, that’s a relief,” he says, inching closer to you. “Because I think you’re very cute, shutterbug.”
You close your eyes and meet your lips with his. From that day forward, the two of you spent everyday together until you left for your next destination. You always kept in touch with one another through text, video chats, and voice calls. Even through the challenging times, the two of you wouldn’t have wanted to be with anyone else.
