That's Right: It's Another Hot Take About That Dead Healthcare CEO
The websites are abuzz with debate on the utilitarian calculus of whether some guy getting shot was a good thing. What are the odds that the assassination will scare the horrible greedy health insurance companies into changing their ways and fixing the system? Is it worth killing someone over? Will the fear of being blasted by some guy with stylishly-engraved bullets put the fat cats in line? Or will their greed win out over their fear, leaving the nightmarish system unchanged?
Well, what if that was totally irrelevant?
You may have seen a graph that looks like this:
I've seen a few of these going around. These are the rates at which various health insurance companies say "no, you don't get the money" when someone says "hey I need money for this medical thing". UHC, the one whose CEO got shot, is notably really bad in this respect. They've got algorithmic claims denials and all kinds of nasty things that people don't like. All that money they're saving on paying out on claims must be making them rich, right? Let's look at their own financial reports:
Whoa! Big numbers! Six percent looks like a small number, but multiply and they make like thirty billion dollars doing this! That's a lot, right?
Well hang on. They're an insurance company. We can roughly model their profit as the amount people pay them for insurance, minus the amount they have to pay out for claims. Let's look at 2023: simple subtraction, their expenses are $339.2 billion. We simplify other overhead and assume that's all claims. So... that represents those 67% of claims they don't reject. What happens if they approve all the claims?
Multiply: $506.3 billion. They don't have that kind of money. They have $371.6 billion in revenue. So okay- they have to deny some claims. That's pretty normal. But let's pretend they're extremely afraid of assassins now and want to be completely non-greedy: they're okay making zero profit. They make $32.4 billion in profit- how many otherwise-rejected claims can they now afford to approve?
...uh. Well, they can afford to pay out, at most, 73.4% of claims. Still a denial rate of 26.6%, higher than most of their competitors. Not a huge improvement. And in reality, they can't afford to make 0 profit- a company that's making 0 profit is a company investors pull out of immediately, leaving it to collapse, because they can make more money investing in the ones that aren't as afraid of assassins. They've got to at least hover around the same profit margin as their competitors. Which is...
That's average profit margins for the whole US healthcare industry. So, okay, if we match those other companies' profit margins and try to hover around 3-4%... uh. Wait. Hang on. Here's another graph with more recent data on UHC specifically:
Wait, they're still just making that little 3-4% profit margin, even with all these shady automated denials- so how are those other companies doing better on claims? They're obviously not less greedy. They must be making more money somehow, right?
(My guess, sight-unseen, would be that they charge more for their plans, or offer less comprehensive coverage, or use a network of less expensive providers, or other things that make the amount they have to pay out smaller and the amount they're taking in larger. I don't feel like doing a comprehensive consumer review of what every insurance provider's healthcare plans are, but there's always these tradeoffs to make. UHC seems to be offering the tradeoff of "better or cheaper care, on paper" for "but there's a higher risk of getting denied", which is one annoying tradeoff among many.)
Okay But That's Enough Graphs
"Yeah yeah yeah shut up about profit margins and coverage tradeoffs. Is it a good thing that the CEO got shot or not?"
Well, their profit margin at the time he was shot was 3.63%. A company can't survive making 0 or less, so whatever effect fear of assassination has on UHC's greediness, it is going to be no larger than 3.63%.
They may learn the lesson that having their denial rates too high will get them assassinated. Accordingly, they may decrease that metric- by charging higher premiums, kicking expensive doctors out of their network, or reducing their stated coverage. They will not (because they cannot, without ceasing to exist as a company) simply start approving more claims without squeezing their customers elsewhere. They legally cannot do that. No matter how afraid you make the CEOs, you cannot make them afraid to a degree larger than their profit margin.
Well What The Fuck, Then
Like, what, are we supposed to accept that things will literally never get better and that this horrorshow is the best we can hope for? That's some bullshit! If we can't scare the CEOs, who can we scare?
Man I dunno.
Like, for some reason healthcare is stupid expensive! People can't afford to pay for healthcare without insurance- it's like thousands of dollars for basic procedures! Why? Maybe...
Doctors inflate their prices 10x because they know insurance companies will use complicated legal tricks to only pay 10% of the asking price, and this is a constantly escalating price war that serves mainly to fuck over the uninsured
Drug manufacturers and health technology companies fight tooth and nail to maintain monopolies over treatment, so they can charge gazillions to make back the gazillions they had to spend on FDA approval trials
(Trials those same companies lobby to keep necessary because the more money you have to pay for FDA approval, the harder it is for competitors to enter the market since they don't already have the gazillions)
Doctors operate as a cartel and lobby to gatekeep access to medical training so that they can keep doctoring a prestigious and exclusive position, and keep their own salaries high enough to pay their medical school debt and make them rich afterwards- leading to a (profitable) shortage of medical professionals
There is no limit to how expensive things can get but how much people are physically capable of paying, because frequently the alternative to "pay a ridiculous amount for healthcare" is "die", and so healthcare is subject to near-infinitely inelastic demand
Also like a thousand other equally annoying and complicated perverse incentives and stupid situations
This is the human condition: Shit is annoying and complicated and difficult to fix, pretty much 100% of the time forever. A few bullets in some fucko's back isn't really going to make a dent.
(But like, sure, fuck that guy. He probably sucked, as do the hundred other identical suits in line to replace him. Just... don't expect this to help.)

My Hero Academia: Healthcare?
I don't know if any fanfic writers will find this useful or not, but I think the information is interesting and worth speculation in the My Hero setting. This also applies to any fanfic writers in the anime fandoms who want to have more immersive and in-depth writing. Obviously, writing fics that are 'accurate' is not a requirement since the point is to have fun, but here's some knowledge to use (or not use) if anyone is interested.
Obviously, Deku's been in the hospital a lot. A lot of the characters are injured and in the hospital a lot. But for all the hospital visits, nobody in the series is going to be bankrupted by astronomical healthcare costs. (Yes, that's a jab at America's system.) And it's not because the Pros, especially the popular ones, have money.
Here's why:
Quick rundown of how healthcare in Japan works: Everybody receives healthcare, everybody has health insurance. In Japan, your employer is legally required to provide you with health insurance. If you are unemployed, you will be on a community healthcare plan. There is also a plan for citizens over the age of 75. This also applies to foreigners who have established permanent residence of three months or longer.
Article 25 of Japan's Constitution is paraphrased as follows:
âall people shall have the right to maintain a certain standard of healthy and cultured lifeâ and that âthe state shall try to promote and improve the conditions of social welfare, social security, and public healthâ for this purpose.
I'm not going to reiterate the system in its entirety, but if you would like to learn more, this site here (the Article 25 quote I used is also found on that page) has a brief and comprehensive explanation of how healthcare is handled. However, one thing I am going to mention that is relevant for Deku and other Pros is the threshold out-of-pocket expense.
In Japan, citizens enrolled in healthcare do not spend more than „90,000 per month out of pocket, protecting them from financial disaster.
(To Americans, this may sound like a sweet deal, but hold your horses because Japan also funds this system through heavy taxation. Medical procedures are expensive and people will be paying for them one way or another.)
The question that needs asking now is how does this system apply to the hero society? Well, first off, since My Hero does take place in a slightly futuristic setting, we could take into consideration the system has been revised.
Assuming not much as changed, are heroes that operate their own agency technically considered business owners and are required to insure their employees and sidekicks?
Or...
Because they are all government employees, is the Safety Commission responsible for insuring all heroes and sidekicks no matter what they rank in their popularity?
Personally, I think it would be the latter since, in the coldest sense of the word, the heroes are essential to the Commission in upholding their system. So that makes them an asset. The Commission would want to protect its assets because as shady as they are, their own system could work against them. They certainly don't want heroes going on strike for lack of benefits or complaining the government doesn't take care of their people. So I assume it's the Commission who is covering insane healthcare costs on behalf of heroes.
(And since the system is probably funded by taxpayers' money, that also feeds into the prevalent societal discontent that's ongoing throughout the series.)
Now what about Deku and his classmates since they have not graduated and are not officially licensed yet? Honestly, I think it's probably UA itself that insures the students. That probably has to do with accreditation and so on, which is another matter entirely, but again, the backing is likely coming out of the Commission (and taxpayers') pockets.
And there you have it. Happy writing, happy research.

Topical or Injectable Testosterone Comparison: Which is Best For You?
i've met a lot of people who are unsure of which route of HRT they'd like to take. there are a lot of pros and cons to each one, I figured I would lay out some information to try to make that decision a bit easier for folks, as someone who has used both.
both forms of testosterone are equally as effective, topical is not "weaker" than injectable, everyone's bodies processes these hormones differently and the effectiveness depends on how your body processes medications, and your dosage.
Topical Testosterone
Taken daily, or for some folks, every few days
Either comes in a bottle with a pump that dispenses measured doses, or will come in a month's worth of small packets or tubes.
Many insurance plans in the United States will not cover topical testosterone for transgender or intersex HRT purposes, and if it is covered, it often costs an exorbitant amount of money- well into the hundreds of dollars
Requires clean skin prior to and covering the skin with clothing after application and avoiding swimming and showering for several hours after application
Hands must be washed afterwards to prevent transmission of the hormone to other people in your environment
Has a strong smell due to the gel being alcohol based
Can cause burning sensation if it accidentally gets into sensitive areas such as mucous membranes, cuts, your eyes, etc.
Can cause skin irritation in some folks, though this is rare
Being an alcohol based gel, it is very flammable, so caution is needed to be practiced around flames until the gel has dried
Can be easy to miss doses if you have chronic fatigue and/or illness, memory problems, mental health issues, or a busy lifestyle
Injectable Testosterone
Usually taken once or twice a week, depending on your needs
Testosterone cypionate is almost always covered by insurance in places where transgender HRT is a part of your plan. It is extremely cheap if it is not covered for whatever reason, usually costing around $15 for a month's worth of vials and syringes, but this can vary wildly depending on your area
Requires needles, syringes, a sharps container (safe container to dispose needles into), alcohol prep pads or isopropyl alcohol or other strong sterilizing agent for the injection site, bandages for applying to the site afterwards, and optionally gloves, but washing your hands prior to injecting works as well
If doing your own injections, you have to learn how to measure your dose accurately, and how to hold the needle at the angle most appropriate for your injections, as well as learning about if you need to do subcutaneous or intramuscular injections
Despite the amount of items required, injections are very quick and can be done and forgotten about until your next injection date- there is no daily maintenance for injections
You must switch up your injection spots every time you inject as to avoid damaging muscle and skin tissue
Injections can be done by endocrinologists and prescribers if you do not feel comfortable doing them yourself
It is possible for your skin to react to, or for you to be allergic to the injecting needles. This is rare, and can be addressed with your prescriber and/or an allergist
Testosterone cypionate will crystalize in cold temperatures. It will change in appearance and consistency, but can be returned to normal by placing the vial into warm water for a while and/or by shaking the vial for a while
this is not meant to be a comprehensive guide, but rather some observations ihave made in my 8 years of being on testosterone HRT. hope this is helpful, we will add anything else we can think of. good luck figuring out what's right for you in your journey

Y/N: Whatever happened to sharing is caring huh?
Latrice: đđŸđđŸ
Y/N: Oh god what have you done
Y/N: Tell me itâs not who I think it is you dumb fucking bitch đ
Latrice: đ€
Y/N: Ms. Kabamba đ
Team BEBE was filming the last bit of reaction segments with Mnet while they were interrupted by a few raps on their door. âCome in!â Lusher greeted her co-captain dance mate in with a hug.
Latrice slowly poked her head through the door, âHey Bada can I borrow you for a quick second?â
Bada looked up, confused, but walked over nonetheless. âIs everything alright?â
âCalling in a personal favour,â Latrice smiled nervously, âcan you go on a dinner tonight?â
âDinner? Sure!â The choreographer hummed and nodded excitedly, âBEBE with Jam Republic?â
âYou and Y/N,â Latrice snickered, âI have a date and had to bail, but sheâll be much much kinder to me if youâd go in my place instead.â
Bada raised an eyebrow and pointed at herself. Perplexed, she sounded a little dumbfounded, âMe? Why?â
Latrice rolled her eyes at the obvious question, âShe has a fat celebrity crush on you since she the first episode aired, thatâs why. Now please, pretty please with a cherry on top, would you go in my place tonight so she donât-â Latrice stopped dead as you decided youâve had enough of her ignoring your text and started calling her instead. Her eyes widen slightly in fear as she turned to the taller dancer. âBada please Iâll owe you one, Iâm so so sorry-â she swiped and picked up your call, âheyyyy Y/N, I was just telling Bada about your dinner plan tonight. Sheâs super keen! Here you go-â
Latrice palmed the phone to the choreographer like a hot potato, mouthing âthank youâ at the blonde.
Dinner with Bada? The sentence hasnât fully registered in your brain as you begun to rip your high school mate a new one. âMs. Kabamba,â you uttered with the coldest tone you could muster, a tone that Latrice knows all too well. A tone you only take with her when she knows sheâs done something stupid, again.
âSorry to disappoint,â a familiar voice broke you out of your rant. âMs. Lee here. I heard we have plans?â
Damnit that cunt, Iâll deal with her later. You quickly composed yourself, âNever a disappointment, love. Any dietary restrictions?â You tried to mitigate your hoarse voice (from screaming âCUNNNNTTTTTTâ right before Latrice picked up the phone) and previously harsh tone by being as sweet as possible with your word choice, knowing that phone call rarely - if ever - made you sound more personable.
Love? Your husky delivery had the tall dancer flustered, trying to hide a blush taking form on her cheeks. Bada gulped, hard, and stumbled over her words, âN-no, Iâm not picky. Where and when?â She tried to pass it off as cool and nonchalant, but Lusher seemed to have picked up on her change in tone.
âIâll pick you up when you finish for the day? Latrice gave me their schedule.â Bada hummed over the phone, you can almost see her cute head bop as she does. Okay, dinner with Bada. One-on-one. I can do this, no biggie, fuck. âSee you then, Love.â
Latrice gave Bada a parting hug when the call was over, the latter still bewildered by the unexpected call. âThank you so, so much. Youâre a life saver. Have fun later!â She quickly shuffled out the room, shutting the door behind her.
Lusher peaked over the tall dancerâs shoulder, Badaâs cheeks still warm from the conversation. She gasped as the blonde slowly clasped her hands onto her face, letting out a small shriek. âOh god Bada what was that all about?â The co-captain raised an eyebrow at her leaderâs demeanour.
âLusher, did you bring an extra outfit?â Was the first thing that came out of Badaâs mouth.
Y/N: Youâre off the hook
Y/N: For now
Y/N: I will grill you afterwards đ
Latrice: What a weird way to say thank u but ok
Latrice: ure welcome
When you pulled up in your bike, you did not expect the gorgeous specimen to be walking out the building in a skirt. You gulped and paused for a (significant) moment, marvelling at her (legs). Her hair sat perfectly, framing her face. She smiled and waved at you, walking (omg her legs) over with a small prance (her legs yâall). âHey, thanks for picking me up.â
âGod you look amazing.â After pulling yourself together, you realised a slight problem. âI am so sorry,â you quickly apologised, motioning her skirt (legs), âI did not plan accordingly.â
She chuckled and shook her head, âDonât worry about these, tights underneath. My hair however, is a different story.â
Relieved, you handed her a helmet with a smile and hopped onto the bike, signalling her to get on. Bada giggled and straddled herself behind you, wrapping her hands around your waist. Both of you were suddenly very grateful for the helmets for keeping you road safe and hiding blushes. âYou good?â You did one last check. Bada hummed and gave you a soft squeeze before you both rode off.

I turn 18 next year and Iâm not sure where I can get testosterone, Iâve looked at planned parenthoodâs website but the only one in my state doesnât offer hrt services đ do you have any advice on how to access hrt?
Lee says:
Happy (Very very) early birthday! If you're still a year away from being 18 you have plenty of time to figure this out.
You should start by talking to your primary care physician and ask if they are knowledgeable about gender-affirming care and are willing to prescribe you HRT themselves. If they are not experienced with HRT for gender-affirming reasons, ask them to look into it and refer you to a healthcare provider who is.
While you're waiting for your appointment (often it can be at least a month away even if you schedule the first available date) use that time wisely and go out into the world (And internet) and talk to people! There must be at least ONE other trans person in your state who is on hormones, right? You just have to find ONE other trans person in your state who is on hormones (and trust me-- there's more than just one trans person on hormones in your state! But all you need is one person), then find out where they're getting their prescription from!
Online platforms can be a great resource for shared experiences and advice so I'd just start by googling "transgender [insert hormone name] in [insert state]" until you find the right key terms. You might also be able to find something on Reddit or through Facebook groups.
Additionally, going to trans support groups and meeting people there and asking your trans friends to ask their friends, etc can all be a good way to find a provider through word-of-mouth.
Another thing you can try is contacting LGBTQ+ centers or organizations in your state and seeing if they have any recommendations. Even if Planned Parenthood's local branch doesn't offer HRT services, they may have a lists of trans-friendly healthcare providers or clinics that do, so it could still be worth reaching out to them.
If you're planning on attending college or university, check if the campus health center provides HRT or can refer you to local resources that do. Some college health centers offer comprehensive services for transgender students, but unfortunately most do not.
Many healthcare providers now offer telehealth services for transgender patients looking to start or continue HRT. These services can be particularly helpful if you live in an area with limited access to transgender healthcare. Providers like Folx Health, Plume, and QueerDoc offer gender-affirming care to patients in many states, all through telehealth platforms.
There's more info on starting hormones in this post, and you should take a look at that too.
Finally, I'm guessing that you don't have much experience with adulting which is fine because everyone starts somewhere! I was in the same position as you once. I also started to look into starting T when I was 17 and got everything ready (appointments scheduled for after my birthday, letter of support since it wasn't fully informed consent, lab work done the month before I was 18, etc), but didn't actually start hormones until I was 18.
Everyone has a different path through life, but this may be your first time scheduling doctor's appointments for yourself, signing up for a patient portal, getting your own health insurance (unless your parents support you being on HRT and wouldn't boot your off of their coverage), paying for appointment and prescription and lab work copays, etc.
Since you have a year until you're actually 18, it would be a good idea to start getting prepped for your first dive into the healthcare system as a legal-adult-even-if-it-doesn't-always-feel-that-way and google the basics of having and using health insurance. There's a lot of words you're going to need to learn one day (what's a deductible vs an out of pocket maximum vs an allowed amount etc) and this is as good of a time as any to start learning some of those basics (The advanced level is learning how to appeal denied claims, etc).
You got this anon! You're clearly on the right track by starting to investigate the process of starting HRT in advance, and remember that starting HRT as an adult also comes with adult responsibilities like figuring out how to pay for it! When you're thinking through the logistics of finding an in-network prescriber, don't forget to budget for those things too.
Followers, any tips for anon?

Itâs understandable to want to help troubled kids. But the evidence simply isnât there that unproven drugs and surgeries are what they need.
In our drive to eliminate health inequities, my fellow liberal Democrats and I are eager to help children who identify as transgender. This compassionate urge has led our state, Oregon, to fast-track Medicaid coverage of medical transition services for kids, including puberty-blockers, cross-sex hormones, and surgical removal of breasts and genitals. Yet Iâm deeply concerned that in the push for equity, Oregon has ignored evidence, to the point of jeopardizing childrenâs health. I know from experience that my state can do better to ensure that kids get medically necessary care.
Oregon has long been a national and even international model for evidence-based medicine. I personally encountered my stateâs strong commitment to medical science after my two young sons were diagnosed with autism in the late 2000s. At the time, few autism treatments were covered by insurance or Medicaid anywhere in America, so I worked with state leaders and a broader coalition to right that wrong. One key hurdle was Oregonâs Health Evidence Review Commission (HERC), which determines what treatments Medicaid covers and strongly influences the coverage of private health-insurance plans.
HERC held us to its customary high standards for quality of evidence. We organized testimony from some of the worldâs leading experts on autism and submitted reams of peer-reviewed journal articles, all of which were rigorously scrutinized by HERCâs experts. We prevailed only after the U.S. Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality published a groundbreaking systematic review that supported the effectiveness of behavioral interventions for autistic children. In 2014, HERC approved Medicaid coverage of such treatments for children like mine. HERCâs wise focus on evidence steered patients and physicians away from risky and unproven interventions that were popular at the time, some of which, such as chelation therapy, reportedly killed autistic children. To this day, Iâm grateful for the commissionâs high standards.
Yet HERC hasnât upheld the same standards for gender medicine. To its credit, the commission began looking at this issue in 2012, before gender dysphoria was on the social radar. At the time, based primarily on studies of adults over the age of 30, it concluded that there was âvery poor evidenceâ of benefits of medical interventions for patients. Even so, HERC decided in 2014 to provide comprehensive Medicaid coverage for puberty-blockers, cross-sex hormones, and surgeries for anyone, including children, who identifies as transgender. In a strange departure from its own rules, HERC didnât run these policies through its evidence-based-guidelines subcommittee. In my fight for autism coverage, that subcommittee was the most important part of the process.
Iâm confident the commissioners were trying to help people in what was then a unique situation. At the time, in 2015, the state estimated that very few patients would choose medical transition: according to NPR, âat least 175â patients per year, of all ages. NPR quoted HERCâs medical expert as estimating that the combined total cost for this coverage would be âup to $200,000 â for the whole state.â Yet by 2019, more than 7,500 Oregonians were receiving such treatment, at a cost of over $20 million per year. Based on my analysis of state data, hundreds of children have received some combination of puberty-blockers, cross-sex hormones, and surgeries. None of these procedures have gone through clinical trials to demonstrate their safety and effectiveness, and in the case of hormones, children are receiving drugs that havenât been approved for such use by the FDA.
Amid this exponential rise, HERC in 2023 commissioned a thorough review of the latest studies. The draft report, which I obtained via a freedom-of-information request, found that the evidence was still very limited. For youth, the investigators reported that they were unable to find any systematic reviews â the key evidence we had to provide for autism coverage â with âextractable dataâ showing benefits of transgender treatments for children. The report also noted that many lower-quality studies canât be applied to patients who seek a rapid gender-affirming transition, which is typically the case with children. The report was essentially Oregonâs version of the Cass Report, which the United Kingdom released in April.
Yet Oregonâs report was never finalized, and HERC staff didnât even present their draft to the bodyâs 13 commissioners. Instead, after the state passed a law requiring the coverage of âaccepted standards of careâ for transgender treatments, HERC quickly endorsed guidelines from an advocacy group â without any analysis of the contents. The guidelines are highly aggressive yet based on low-quality evidence. Today, preteen Oregonians can be put on powerful chemicals without FDA approval, before moving on to surgeries as adolescents. These interventions can irreversibly alter their bodies and leave them less likely or even unable to have children of their own later in life. The risks to their physical and mental health are high and, crucially, not justified by existing proof of benefit.
Equity cannot be achieved by ignoring evidence and stripping away consumer protections from historically underserved people. While I deeply sympathize with the goal of helping struggling kids, we canât accept shortcutting medical ethics â and we didnât accept it a decade ago, with autism coverage. The ethical path is for HERC to define âaccepted standards of careâ based on the best science. Medicine is supposed to follow the evidence because health and well-being hang in the balance. The stakes are especially high for children. If we truly want to be equitable, Oregon will stop undermining childrenâs right to evidence-based medical care.

The Chinese healthcare system has a long way to go before it can adequately satisfy the needs of the country's huge population. However, I take great pride in the high quality of China's healthcare at such low costs for the average Chinese person.
Yesterday, a little winged insect flew into my right eye, leaving a red spot on my eyeball. I opened my medical app at 12 a.m., scheduled an appointment at 2 p.m., waited for half an hour, and had a medical examination. Most of the bill was paid for by my national health insurance.
I also tried making an appointment with a neurosurgeon through the Peking University People's Hospital mobile app. When I checked the app at 21:44, I saw that the earliest available appointment with a chief physician (professor) would be 16 hours later and would cost 300 RMB ($41, most of which would be reimbursed by my medical care). [Picture 1]
The earliest appointment I can get with an attending physician is a day later, and it will cost me 50 RMB ($6.8). With my healthcare, I only pay 10 RMB ($1.4). [Picture 2]
For people in immediate need, the system is incredibly affordable and effective (I don't want to have a red eye for days).
Here are some statistics on China's healthcare system.
đ„ When the PRC was founded in 1949, the average life expectancy in China was 35 years; in 2022, it was 77.93 years, mostly due to the country's improving medical care system.
đ„ Its basic medical insurance covers approximately 1.3 billion people.
đ„ China has a three-tier system to grade hospitals, with tertiary hospitals -- which have the largest number of beds and provide comprehensive medical services -- at the top of the system.
đ„ Basic public health services provided at the primary level have been bolstered. In the first half of 2023, nearly 90 million people aged 65 and above enjoyed health management through such services, increasing by 40 percent compared with the same period last year.
đ„ Health authorities and medical institutions have made proactive efforts to ensure the accessibility and equitability of health services. Currently, 82.7 percent of all medical institutions at or above the secondary level in the country have established a system that enables patients to schedule appointments for diagnosis and treatment.
đ„ Internet-powered health services are playing an increasingly important role in China's health system. By 2020, over 1,600 internet hospitals were opened in China, and almost 49 million people had used the service to receive a diagnosis and treatment.
đ„ By the end of 2021, the number of doctors in China had reached 4.2 million, and the number of doctors per 1,000 people had reached 3.04, close to the level of developed countries.
đ„ The Chinese government announced in 2022 a strategy to increase the number of health professionals as part of the country's 14th Five-Year Plan. It aims to increase the number of physicians to 3.2 per 1,000 people by 2025.
đ„ From January to September, medical institutions in China saw a total of 5.11 billion medical visits.

why you need pet insurance
Dropping this here to illustrate that pet insurance is a thoroughly good deal. My girl Rosie had a lump removed today, I pay about ÂŁ25 a month, and in return I save upwards of thousands on vet care every year. (Rosie was a rescue and turned out to have a lot of health problems and need regular dental work etc, even though none of the other cats I've kept needed so much as their claws clippedâgo figure.) I insured her as soon as I got her, and all her problems have always been covered.
The ÂŁ85 is the excess, the amount I payâeven if she has to come back a dozen times this year for the same condition. The ÂŁ1,359 is the amount my insurer will pay this week. Trust me, you need this and your pets need it. Even something like a broken leg can run you to one or two thousand pounds.
In the UK I recommend Petplanâthey're not the cheapest, but they are the most comprehensive and many vets will approve direct claims (where they get the outstanding amount direct from the insurer) from them and nobody else. I've been with them since the 90s and I've never had a claim turned down. I am not on commission, just very grateful to all the other subscribers with healthy cats who are paying for my girl, lol
Honestly I'm on a low income and knowing Rosie will never suffer because I can't afford her vet care is a huge burden off my mind. She has a limp right now which looks like it may be the beginnings of arthritis, which would need daily medication for the rest of her life.
(BTW, the discount column is for my vet's healthcare plan, which is another ÂŁ13 a month but includes all her flea and worm treatment, her annual inoculations, and twice-yearly health checks, as well as a discount on treatment, food bought direct, and so on. Many vets will have something like this, and it's worth looking into.)

LGBTQ advocates in Peru protested in the capital city of Lima last week after the Health Ministry issued a new law that deemed transgender people as having âmental health problems.â
The supreme decree, signed by Peruvian President Dina Boluarte and published May 10, updated the ministryâs list of insurable mental health conditions to include âtransexualism,â âgender identity disordersâ and âcross-dressing.â
In 2019, the World Health Organization redefined its terms on gender identity-related health, moving conditions of âgender incongruenceâ out of being defined as âmental and behavioral disordersâ and into the âconditions related to sexual healthâ category.Â
âThis reflects current knowledge that trans-related and gender diverse identities are not conditions of mental ill-health, and that classifying them as such can cause enormous stigma,â the guidance reads.
On May 11, the Peruvian Health Ministry released a statement, insisting that the update is to ensure comprehensive mental health interventions.
âThe ministry ratifies its position that gender and sexual diversity are not diseases.â it stated. âIn this framework, we express our respect for gender identities, as well as our rejection of the stigmatization of sexual diversity in the country.â
Despite this, the ministry reiterated that the update to the countryâs Essential Health Insurance Plan will remain in force.
After the statement was issued, a collective of more than 60 national LGBTQ organizations staged a protest Friday in front of the ministryâs headquarters in Lima.
The protest coincided with the International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia, which is celebrated annually May 17.
The organizations said in a joint statement that the decree perpetuates âan archaic visionâ that makes transgender people targets of aggression.
âThe adoption of such a decree constitutes a serious setback in terms of our rights and in the recognition of our dignity as individuals,â the statement continues. âThis measure not only reflects a lack of understanding and respect for sexual and gender diversity, but also has devastating consequences for our lives.â
Transformar, a trans-feminist Peruvian organization, urged the ministry to reconsider the decree, and âadopt measures that respect and promote inclusive public policies.â
âThis is not only a setback in terms of human rights and recognition of diversity, but it also opens the door to aberrant practices such as conversion therapies,â Collective Pride March, another Lima-based rights group, said in a statement. âGender identity is not a disease, it is part of human diversity and must be respected and protected as such.â
In its statement, the Health Ministry clarified that sexual orientation and gender identity do not constitute health disorders, and individuals should not be subjected to treatments such as conversion therapy.
On Wednesday, U.S. Rep. Robert Garcia, D-Calif., said that he would be working directly with the State Department to âpush back on this direct attack on LGBTQ+ Peruvians,â because the measure âmoves Peru backward.â
âAs a gay Peruvian-American and the first Peruvian American to serve in Congress, itâs clear to me the decision by the Boluarte administration and the right-wing Congress to attack and label trans and intersex Peruvians as âmentally illâ is discriminatory, dangerous and shameful,â he said.
In the United States, the American Psychiatric Association has used the terminology âgender dysphoriaâ in its Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders since 2013 â replacing âgender identity disorderâ â focusing on the distress related to transgender peopleâs experiences, rather than on the identities themselves.

Tree Removal in Harkaway: A Comprehensive Guide to Safe and Efficient Services
Harkaway, a picturesque suburb nestled in the southeastern region of Melbourne, is known for its lush greenery and expansive landscapes. As beautiful as the trees and natural surroundings may be, there are times when tree removal becomes necessary for safety, property maintenance, or landscape aesthetics. Whether you are a homeowner dealing with a potentially hazardous tree or simply want to enhance your gardenâs beauty, understanding the tree removal process is essential. In this guide, we will explore everything you need to know about tree removal Harkaway, including when and why it's necessary, how to choose the right tree removal service, and the steps involved in the process.
Why Tree Removal Is Necessary
Trees provide a range of benefits, from improving air quality to offering shade and enhancing the beauty of your property. However, there are situations where tree removal becomes unavoidable. Below are some common reasons why tree removal in Harkaway may be necessary:
Safety Concerns Trees that are damaged, decaying, or leaning dangerously can pose a significant risk to people and property. A weakened tree can fall during a storm or high winds, causing serious injury or damage to homes, vehicles, or power lines. Removing hazardous trees before they become a problem is crucial for ensuring the safety of your family and neighbors.
Disease or Decay Trees affected by disease or pest infestations can become structurally compromised, making them more susceptible to falling. In some cases, the disease can spread to nearby trees, threatening the health of your entire landscape. If a tree is beyond saving, removal may be the only option to prevent further damage.
Property Damage Prevention Overgrown or poorly placed trees can damage buildings, fences, or underground utilities. The roots of large trees can crack foundations or block drainage systems, leading to costly repairs. In such cases, tree removal helps to protect your property from damage and reduce future maintenance costs.
Improving Aesthetics Sometimes, tree removal is needed to improve the overall look of your yard or garden. Dead, dying, or poorly placed trees can detract from the beauty of your landscape. Removing these trees opens up space for new plantings or allows for a more attractive garden layout.
Construction and Renovation Projects If youâre planning a home renovation or building project, tree removal may be required to clear the area for construction. Ensuring that trees are removed safely and efficiently is essential to avoiding delays and potential damage to your property during the project.
Choosing the Right Tree Removal Service in Harkaway
Hiring a professional tree removal service in Harkaway is the best way to ensure that the job is done safely and efficiently. However, with many options available, itâs essential to choose a service that is experienced, qualified, and reliable. Here are some key factors to consider when selecting a tree removal service:
Experience and Expertise Look for a tree removal company with a solid track record of experience in handling a wide variety of tree species and situations. Trees in Harkaway come in all shapes and sizes, and each may require a different approach to removal. A professional service will have the necessary skills and knowledge to assess the tree and determine the safest way to remove it.
Licensing and Insurance Tree removal can be a hazardous task, so itâs crucial to hire a company that is fully licensed and insured. This protects you from liability in case of accidents or damage during the removal process. Always verify that the service you choose carries adequate insurance coverage, including workerâs compensation and public liability insurance.
Safety Practices Safety should be a top priority for any tree removal service. Ask about the companyâs safety protocols, including the use of protective equipment and trained staff. A professional service will follow industry-standard safety practices to minimize the risk of accidents and ensure the safe removal of the tree.
Equipment and Technology Tree removal requires specialized equipment, such as chainsaws, cranes, and stump grinders. Ensure that the company you choose has access to the necessary tools and machinery to handle the job efficiently. Modern equipment not only speeds up the process but also reduces the risk of damage to your property.
Customer Reviews and Reputation Check online reviews and testimonials from previous customers to get an idea of the companyâs reputation. A tree removal service with positive reviews and satisfied clients is more likely to deliver high-quality work. Additionally, ask for references from the company to verify their past performance.
Environmental Considerations A responsible tree removal service will take environmental factors into account. Ask about their policies for tree disposal and recycling. Many companies will chip and mulch removed trees for use in landscaping, ensuring that the tree is repurposed in an eco-friendly manner.
The Tree Removal Process: What to Expect
The tree removal process involves several steps, each designed to ensure that the tree is safely and efficiently removed. Hereâs a breakdown of what you can expect during a typical tree removal in Harkaway:
Initial Assessment Before any work begins, a professional arborist will visit your property to assess the tree and its surroundings. They will determine the treeâs condition, size, and the best approach for removal. This may include checking for hazards such as power lines, nearby buildings, or other obstacles.
Tree Removal Plan Once the assessment is complete, the arborist will develop a removal plan tailored to the specific tree. This plan will include details on how the tree will be cut down, what equipment will be used, and how the surrounding area will be protected during the removal process.
Cutting Down the Tree The tree will be carefully cut down in sections, starting from the top and working downwards. Depending on the treeâs size and location, the team may use a crane to lift and lower large branches to the ground. This method ensures that the tree is removed safely without causing damage to nearby structures.
Disposal and Cleanup Once the tree has been removed, the remaining debris, including branches, leaves, and wood, will be cleared from your property. Many tree removal services will offer options for recycling the wood, such as chipping it into mulch or cutting it into firewood.
Stump Removal (Optional) After the tree has been removed, you may choose to have the stump removed as well. Stump removal involves grinding down the stump to below ground level, leaving your yard clear and ready for landscaping or replanting.
Conclusion
Tree removal Harkaway is a necessary service that ensures the safety and aesthetic appeal of your property. By hiring a professional tree removal service, you can rest assured that the job will be completed safely, efficiently, and with minimal disruption to your surroundings. Whether youâre dealing with a hazardous tree or simply looking to enhance your landscape, choosing the right service is key to a successful outcome. Make sure to consider the factors outlined above when selecting a tree removal service, and enjoy the peace of mind that comes with knowing your property is in good hands.
