Previously cited in Diedrica Blog, this artist is one of the most influential in the current artistic-cultural landscape. A new sculpture, located in the desert of Qatar, stands in all its magnificence with the intention of becoming an icon for the country.

Commissioned by Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani, it is a tremendously slender, rectangular piece that rises imposingly in the middle of the desert. Built entirely of laminated steel, over time it will rust and gradually change color, tending from gray to orange to definitely stay in a dark amber hue.

Famed American artist and sculptor Richard Serra, known for turning curving walls of rusting steel and other malleable materials into large-scale pieces of outdoor artwork that are now dotted across the world, died Tuesday at his home in Long Island, N.Y.

He was 85. Considered one of his generation’s most preeminent sculptors, the San Francisco native originally studied painting at Yale University but turned to sculpting in the 1960s, inspired by trips to Europe.

His death was confirmed Tuesday night by his lawyer, John Silberman, whose firm is based in New York. He said the cause of death was pneumonia.

His works include the 1987 Cor-Ten sculpture My Curves Are Not Mad, a familiar sight in Dallas’ Nasher Sculpture Center garden.

The work consists of two steel walls positioned parallel to each other, creating a narrow, shadowy passage for visitors to walk through and catch a glimpse of the sky above.

In 2002, the installation of Serra’s Vortex was completed at the Fort Worth Museum of Modern Art. In a Dallas Morning News story at the time, the sculpture — a monumental 67-foot, 230-ton piece — was described as “surprisingly weightless despite its mass, and as elegant as it is assertive.”

Known by his colleagues as the “poet of iron,” Serra became world-renowned for his large-scale steel structures such as monumental arcs, spirals and ellipses.

He was closely identified with the minimalist movement of the 1970s.

Serra’s work started to gain public attention in 1981, when he installed a 120-foot-long and 12-foot-high curving wall of raw steel that splits the Federal Plaza in New York City.

The sculpture, called Tilted Arc, generated swift backlash from people who worked there and a fierce demand that it be removed.

The sculpture was later taken down, but Serra’s popularity in the New York art scene had been cemented.

Most of Serra’s large-scale works are welded in Cor-Ten steel, but he also worked with other nontraditional materials such as rubber, latex, neon — as well as molten lead, which Serra threw against a wall or floor to create his Splash series in his early career.

His works have been installed in landscapes and included in the collections of museums across the world, from The Museum of Modern Art in New York to the deserts of Qatar.

In 2005, eight major works by Serra were installed permanently at the Guggenheim Museum in Spain. Carmen Jimenez, the exhibition organizer, said Serra was “beyond doubt the most important living sculptor.”

Born to a Russian-Jewish mother and a Spanish father in San Francisco, Serra was the second of three sons. He started drawing at a young age and was inspired by the time he spent at a shipyard where his father worked as a pipe fitter. Before his turn to sculpting, Serra worked in steel foundries to help finance his education at the Berkeley and Santa Barbara campuses of the University of California. He then went on to Yale, graduating in 1964.

New Sculpture by Richard Serra to Be Unveiled at Gagosian Le Bourget

I attempt to use sculptural form to make space distinct. —Richard Serra Gagosian is pleased to present a new sculpture by Richard Serra. Made of weatherproof steel, Transmitter (2020) measures 4 meters in height, 17.7 meters in width, and 18.2 meters in length, and will be installed in Gagosian Le Bourget’s vast main exhibition space. In collaboration with the gallery, the Centre Pompidou in Paris will present a three-day retrospective of Serra’s films and videos, drawn from the museum’s collection as well as from the collection of the Museum of Modern Art, New York. This is the first time that all of the artist’s film and video work will be shown together in Paris. The screenings will be held in Cinéma 2 of the Centre Pompidou.

Richard Serra was born in 1938 in San Francisco, and lives and works in New York. Collections include Centre Pompidou, Paris; Musée d’Art Contemporain, Bordeaux, France; Guggenheim Bilbao, Spain; Kröller-Müller Museum, Otterlo, Netherlands; Stedelijk Van Abbemuseum, Eindhoven, Netherlands; Dia Art Foundation, New York; Museum of Modern Art, New York; National Gallery of Art, Washington, DC; Carnegie Museum of Art, Pittsburgh; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; and Los Angeles County Museum of Art. Serra participated in Documenta 5, 6, 7, and 8; and the 39th, 44th, 49th, and 55th editions of La Biennale di Venezia. In 2008 he presented Promenade (2008) for the Monumenta commission at the Grand Palais, Paris; and in 2005, The Matter of Time (1994–2005), a series of eight sculptures, was installed permanently at the Guggenheim Bilbao. In 2014, East-West/West-East (2014) was installed permanently in the desert of the Brouq Nature Reserve, Qatar. Serra has received numerous accolades, including a Fulbright Grant (1965); National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship (1974); Carnegie Prize (1985); Praemium Imperiale, Japan Arts Association (1994); Leone d’Oro, La Biennale di Venezia (2001); and Alexej von Jawlensky Prize, City of Wiesbaden, Germany (2017). Serra was made Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres in 1985, and Officier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres in 1991. In 2008 he was made Commandeur de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres, and in 2015 he was appointed Chevalier de l’Ordre national de la Légion d’honneur for his “exceptional contribution to art, past, present, and future.” In September 2018, Serra received the J. Paul Getty Medal. Artist research: Richard Serra

I came across Richard Serra during a Friday peer group tutorial with Elaine. We watched a video about how he uses verbs to create his work, for example he uses “to fold”, “to roll”, “to scrape” to create his large scale sculptures. I found this idea of using verbs interesting and decided to try it out for myself and see what i could create at a much smaller scale. I also looked at other works of his and found them very appealing especially his “east-west west-east” sculpture in Qatar which looks like it was placed there by aliens.
