FIRST LOVE — Jimmy Holiday [October Prompts] 🧡
A/N: Finally got around to watching Rez Ball last night. Thank you to TikTok for putting me on! This is just a tiny little thing since the fandom doesn’t exist up here just like Rez Dogs (shockingly not shocked) and I thought it would be nice of me to feed the tag for those who are looking for some fics like I did right after I finished watching that beautiful film 🤩
PROMPTS ARE FROM HERE & I’m using: 10. Well…you grabbed my hand first.” + SCENARIOS — 13. Decorating for Halloween.
<- read my previous October anthology prompt here.

You had no business doing what you’re doing right now.
Which is exactly why you’re doing it with no parental supervision.
You’re outside using only a stool and one of the pillars that surrounded the front door to the stucco and block home as leverage to get on top of your house. You were on a mission and that mission was decorating for Halloween.
The goal was to cover the home with skeletons and spiders, almost as if it were an infestation taking over the home. The front stoop was already done with a stack of pumpkins that you DIY-ED into a tower on both sides of the door, that was easy part, but you were always up for a challenge to complete the exterior decor.
The closest thing to a ladder that you had was the stepping stool and you couldn’t “borrow” your next door neighbors anymore so you had to improvise. Already tossing a few of the skeletons in the bag up onto the home, the next task was pulling your body up and over.
You never had the best upper body strength so out of a panic, your lower half scrambled around knocking the stool over after you slipped trying to pull yourself up.
“Shit!” You exhaled, knowing that you’d have to drop yourself if you couldn’t push yourself all the up on your own. You just hoped you didn’t land the wrong way…again.
Of course you tried but your body didn’t want you to win today.
“Here,” a low voice called out as the scrapping of the stool was placed back where it once was.
Peeking only down at the stool, you placed your feet down one at a time before getting down, unknowingly taking the warm hand that helped you down the rest of the way.
Huffing you threw your head back as you sat on the stool, other hand going to block the autumn sun from your view just to peer up at some pretty hazel eyes.
“You alright?” There’s a small smile of amusement on his lips.
Jimmy Holiday.
Your heart was already racing but now the butterflies decided to start acting up too! And that’s when you realized your hand was still being held onto and you snatched it back.
“I had it.”
Jimmy folded his arms underneath his pits as he stated sarcastically, “Oh really? You would have broke some more bones if it wasn’t for me and you know it.”
Scoffing you don’t even bother to look down at the compression sleeve that covered your left knee, “First of all, I don’t need a savior Jimmy, thank you. Also, what the hell are you doing here anyway?”
Jimmy shrugs, “I was on my way to Dezbah and Bryson’s, I left something over at their spot last night and of course they’re too hungover to bring it to me so…And imagine on my way by I see: a bird? A plane? No, a whole person that looked a whole lot like you trying to get on top of their house.”
“Minding your business is free.” You sass with a flick of your hair behind you while Jimmy rolls his eyes up to the sky.
“So these are the things I get for helping you out?”
“Does that also mean holding my hand?” You argue, you knew you were being absolutely ridiculous right now but it was easier to be this way than to give in and tell the star basketball player that you wanted to kiss him right on his stupid mouth.
Jimmy furrowed his brows, “Well…you grabbed my hand first.”
Gagging you say, “I would never! I don’t know where anything on you has been.”
Jimmy smirked and lifted his chin, “yeah you did but keep being delusional and see how far that gets you.” He even kicked at your stool lightly, “It’s okay to say that you enjoy hand holding, arent girls into physical touch?”
“Please stop talking.” You mutter at that generalization, “I’m sure you can get that from any other girl who drooled over you at the party last night.”
That attitude of yours was something.
After the death of your shared friend, Nataanii Jackson the both of you grieved in different ways. Jimmy got more into basketball and you tried to distance yourself. Jimmy and Nataanii were childhood friends, whereas you moved to Chuska freshman year and met Nataanii first. At first you thought maybe he was just interacting with you because he had something to prove after becoming a warrior. You weren’t into the whole clique scene and found it hard making friends in the beginning, still highly upset that you left your small group back on another rez but you were thankful that Nataanii Jackson became a good friend of yours.
And with Nataanii came Jimmy.
The both of you often talked shit to each other and liked giving each other a hard time but underneath it all there was still love there. Then unfortunately that platonic love became something more…at least on your part.
“I think y’all would be cute,” Nataanii teased you one time at lunch during junior year, “I can see the wedding bells now and you should just tell him or I could do it for you? I make the perfect wingman.”
You almost choked on your apple juice as you watched the braided man glance over his shoulder where Jimmy was sitting with the rest of the team. There was a girl who squeezed herself right in between Jimmy and Levi, her hand running up and down Jimmy’s arm as she flirted with him and of course Jimmy was all smiles, just eating the attention right on up.
“Yo Jim—
Nataanii starts but you’re reaching over the table to yank on his collar, bringing his face closer to you so you can slap a hand right over his mouth, “Taanii no!”
You can feel him grinning underneath your hand but that doesn’t stop Jimmy making his way over to you two nonetheless.
“Why you worried about any of them anyway?”he quizzed you, eyes tightening.
Scoffing you quickly move your attention else where, picking at the loose thread from your compression sleeve, “please, far from worried.”
“You’re the one who disappeared and left early.”
“So?”
“So?” Jimmy pressed, “Why is it every time some other girls are around me, you’re nowhere to be found?”
It’s your turn to frown, “Do you want me to be sick watching them fall all over you, Jimmy? Is that going to feed your ego better or something?”
Jimmy blinks, “You know what I think? I think you’re a bad liar. Always have been.”
You snapped, “What exactly have I lied about?”
“You don’t have one of those corny guys you were talking to, to come help you with these decorations? I heard when I went off to recruitment camp, you were entertaining that lame ass dude who looks like Harry Potter.” He taunts.
Your eyes go wide.
“And who exactly did you hear that from? Your most reliable source? Bryson’s dumbass?” You get up from the stool, pulling it into place and start walking towards your front door, “Like I said, I don’t need anybody’s help, let alone some non existent guy you think I’m talking to.”
“Lies.” Jimmy coughed from behind you, which irritated you more.
Slamming the stool against the front door of the home, you ball your fist into your side, “Call me a liar one more time—
“What’s gonna happen? You and your crappy knee going to jump me or something?”
Poking your tongue into your cheek with a raise of your brow, you size him up and what did you do that for? Jimmy decided to grow his hair out for the two months he was at camp and if you weren’t so frustrated you may have completely folded.
So you shoved him, “I can still kick your scrawny ass.”
He laughs as if you didn’t, “Yeah? You’re just mad your lies caught up to you and Dez finally snitched on your ass but alright, you want to fight instead of acknowledging the truth, fine? Let’s go.”
That’s when Jimmy knew he had you because you stepped back and froze.
“What? What did she tell you?”
Jimmy shrugs trying to be coy, “That you got a crush and it ain’t on Harry Potter.”
“There is no—
You started but stopped as you bit down on your bottom lip before continuing, “I don’t know what you’re talking about and I’m getting tired of looking at your face so I’m gonna leave.”
With your back to Jimmy he decides to finally let the ball drop, “Stop being so mean and just admit that you’re in love with me already, damn.”
Deeply exhaling, you can feel your heartbeat in your ears now. Of course somebody close to you ratted you out. It was a miracle that Nataanii kept his mouth shut this long about your little crush that wasn’t so little. Yet it was Dezbah (who was most likely drunk at the time) who ratted you out. She figured it out long before you admitted it to Nataanii. And now you were ready to fight her (again.) regardless if she whooped your ass or not.
“I…”
Then you tried to book it to your front door but of course Jimmy caught you by the elbow. The guy was as tall as the street lights so surely he had the advantage.
“Nope. Not uh, stop running.” He demanded from behind you, gently pulling on you so that you’d finally face him.
He tilts your face up by the chin with his finger so you can meet his honey eyes. “…Would it be so bad if I said…I like you too?”
You laugh before covering your smile, “I’d call you a liar then.”
“I’m not,” Jimmy boldly said, “and to prove it…you should let me kiss you.”
Internally you definitely screamed but your eyes flicked to the lips you thought about way too often plenty of times before.
“How do I know you’re not just toying with me?”
Jimmy lightly shakes his head, “‘Cause I wouldn’t do that? I liked you the first moment I saw you up in the bleachers since Nataanii and I thought you wouldn’t take up his invitation to come to our practice, ‘Miss. I don’t do large crowds.’ You even rooted for me when we were still trying to get to know each other as friends and that meant a lot.” He says bringing up the memory where you skipped study hall to come to their practice which made you smile a bit before he continued, “Also my mom would probably beat my ass if she heard I broke somebody’s heart and vice versa, if my heart got broken. She doesn’t like to show it but she’s also a sucker for a good love story. So promise me you won’t break mine?”
Slowly feeling yourself nodding you say, “Okay.”
Cautiously he pinched at your chin again, guiding your face right to his. Jimmy stops just before your lips, feeling each of your breaths tickling the other while he admired how gorgeous you looked up close and personal. He even tried to tuck some hair out of the way behind your ear, taking his precious time and smiled as the hair poked right back out from your ear.
“Hurry up, scarecrow.” You mumble.
Which makes him smirk, “relax, you’re so bossy.”
“And you’re so irritating.”
Which makes him press his lips right to yours, shutting you up for good. In that moment you felt like your heart exploded as your lips moved together, noses brushing against each other. Jimmy’s lips were incredibly soft and he took his time, holding onto you with great care, even if there was a hint of static the moment your lips connected. That was enough urge to keep you two going and it felt like you could kiss him for hours.
You “hated” it.
Yet you can feel him smiling as you sighed against him just before he pulls back to get a look at you, with your eyes still closed.
“…anybody home?” He jokes.
You groan, moving to bury your head against his chest while he laughed, wrapping his arms around your shoulders. “Don’t worry,” he whispers, “that was better than I imagined too.”
It actually felt nice to finally experience this and maybe you should be thanking Dezbah, as soon as you got over your annoyance of her ratting you out.
“…where does this leave us now?”
“Well, I’d like to take you on a date sometime.” He says pulling you back to cradle your face, with a stupid smile on his own.
That made your stomach flip, “really?”
“Yeah…if you’re down?” He peers at you from underneath his eyelashes, making sure that you knew he was serious with how intently he stared into your eyes.
You breathe out a smile, “I guess that’ll be cool…as long as you don’t eat all my food.”
“I’m a gentleman.”
“Eh…so only now you’re a gentleman? Because I can’t tell you how many times you stole a lot of my food during lunch?”
He attempts to defend himself, “…That’s what friends are for?”
“Are we that anymore?”
“Nah. Something better,” He grins as you stood on your tippy toes to kiss his lips once more.
No longer a secret, Jimmy Holiday was now yours and he already loved having you in return.
He thinks.
“I told you I had it!” You say as Jimmy lifts you up on his shoulders to help you on top of the house.
Jimmy sucks his teeth, “Stop your yappin’ baby and just accept that this is boyfriend stuff, acts of service or whatever. This is my job.”
“Who said you’re my boyfriend?” You peek out from over the top of house, pointing the skeleton hand at the olive skinned boy.
Jimmy squints up at you, “oh I’m not? I guess I can go mind my business then.”
“…Don’t you dare leave me up here!” You call out at his back.
Jimmy smirks over his shoulder at you, “that’s what I thought.”
Then a middle finger is sent his way and he can’t help but to kiss his lips up at you.

There for me (Jimmy x F!reader) TW: does mention death and weed
It was the second game of the season. The day already started to feel busy because of school, than basketball practice, then lastly cheerleading at game. As the bell rang you pasted by Jimmy and Bryson. Everyone knew you and Jimmy were together so when you seen him you gave him a quick kiss an said hi to the him and Bryson of them. "how was work?" you asked. "great." Jimmy responded sarcastically. "Awww my poor baby." you said looking at him, " i have practice right now so ill see you at the game. Remember do your best and ill be cheering for you." you finished as you gave him kiss bye.
Jimmy's POV
As she was walking away i couldn't help but smile. "Awww jimmys in loveeee." i hear Bryson say teasing. "shut up man" i replied playfully pushed him but i mean he isn't wrong. As we walked into the gym i stopped to look at the girls basketball 2003-2004 banner. "Your mom? Crazy that she used to play with Coach. Senior year bro. Think she'll come to one of you games finally?" I heard Bryson ask. I just laughed it off saying "yea right man." We entered the gym hearing the girls basketball team practices. "Faster. Fast feet, fast feet. Come on. Move the feet! Get a body on someone. Come on." We heard Dezban say. "that's my baby mama. Floor general. Takes after me." Bryson said. "You sure its not the other way around?" I joked. "Bro shut up." Bryson replied but as soon as we looked back at the court my girl made a basket. "See now my girl takes after me." i turned saying to Bryson laughing.
Pov ended
When practices ended you went home to take a quick shower and got ready for the game. Back at school walking into the gym to meet up with the other cheerleaders reader ended up seeing Jimmy again. "Hey handsome." saying as you gave him a hug. "Hey babe." hugging you back. "how was practice?" he asked. "it was pretty good. Dez was floor general of course. But you ready for the game?" you asked. "Yea just waiting on Nataanii, but im pretty sure he'll be here soon" he replied. As you both continued talking you see his team and Coach all meeting in the locker room. "ill see you after the game babygirl." Jimmy said giving you a kiss but it wasn't a normal kiss it was with all his feeling like a reminder to you that he loves you. You couldn't help but smile in the kiss, you felt everything in his kiss. both pulling away looking each other in the eyes, "good luck pretty boy." you said giving him another kiss before walking away. Jimmy could stare at you all day but he couldn't right now since he had a game to play.
Everyone notices Nataanii wasnt there at the game. Something felt off to you, This is the same Nataanii that got you and Jimmy together. He was like your brother. You soon snapped out of your daze as jimmy came up to you giving you a quick kiss on the cheek as his good luck kiss. As the game started you can definitely feel the tension. Santa Fe was definitely getting to them. When Mason knocked Jimmy down all you wanted to do was run to him to make sure he was okay. The guy helped jimmy up, he gave you a quick look knowing that you were worried, he gave you a nod letting you know he's good. As Jimmy was going to make his second free throw you seen the assistant coach come in with officers, you knew something was off when the game started. you just didn't want to be right.
Dez ended up telling you what happened, She gave you a hug as you cried. You soon put your feeling to the side and thought about Jimmy, that was all you can think about. As you and all the family member of the team walked into the locker room you went straight to jimmy, giving him a strong hug. you put all your emotions into the hug telling him that you both will get through it and that youll always be there for him. "No way. I just saw him. We were at the cistern." Jimmy said. His coach tried to walk up to him but he got up and ran out the locker room. You tired to chase after him but he was gone, you knew where he was going.
mini time skip at the Cistern
"I thought i would find you here." you said walking up to him. He looked at you than looked away, "sorry for running out like that." Jimmy said. "You don't have to apologize, i would of done the same." you responded as you sat next to him pulling out a joint. Jimmy might seem like a tough guy but only with you, he shows his soft side. You lit up the joint taking a hit than passing it to jimmy. He knew you weren't going to force his to talk, that was always one of the things he loved about you. He took the joint to take a hit as you laid your head on his shoulder. he thought about how glad to have you sit here with him to make he was okay. You both sat there in silent looking at the town, "I appreciate you coming here to comfort me." Jimmy said breaking the silents looking down at you. "I'll be here for you no matter what. never forget that okay?" you looked back at him. He knew he would never have to question anything you say, you can tell him the would was ending tomorrow and he will believe you. Jimmy leaned in to give you a kiss, you couldnt help but kiss back. You both pulled away, "I love you." Jimmy said staring into your eyes. You smiled at him giving him another kiss. You both stayed at Cistern for a couple more hours when you both deiced to head to your house to end the night, but you both definitely showed how much you love each other. *wink*

Tiny Review: Rez Ball 2024. Reservation Basketball.
It’s nothing that hasn’t been done before in a sports genre story. The mix of modern Native American themes with a sport genre is interesting though.
I wished Nataani’s spirit would have played a role in Jimmy’s headspace for the winning shot. A wasted opportunity imo.
Rez Ball is a 2024 American sports drama film directed by Sydney Freeland, who co-wrote the screenplay with Sterlin Harjo, based on the nonfiction sports novel Canyon Dreams: A Basketball Season on the Navajo Nation, by The New York Times journalist Michael Powell. LeBron James served as one of the producers. The film features an ensemble cast, including Kauchani Bratt, Jessica Matten, Julia Jones, Amber Midthunder, and Kiowa Gordon.

A good player makes himself better, but a great player makes others better. We have seen this time and time again within the NBA with legendary players like Kobe Bryant, Michael Jordan and Lebron James (who is Executive Producer on this film). U CANT REMEMBER — Jimmy Holiday [Fall Crumbles] 🤎
A/N: y’all wanted more Jimmy so here’s me handing it to you early on a platter. You can thank Ms. Kiana for that! Which this little angst prompt was inspired by. I’m officially supposed to be on a break but apparently the inspiration wanted me to continue, hope you like!
SYNOPSIS: In which you’re Jimmy’s girl but once he went off to school to fully pursue basketball, you start to experience a unexpected shift in your relationship.
Today was one of those days where you wished you would have went to sleep early and stayed asleep so you wouldn’t have to deal with the ache you were currently experiencing.
It was common for the both of you, staying up late until the sunrise arrived, trying your hardest to keep quiet in Jimmy’s dorm, out of respect of Jimmy’s homebody roommate. This was nothing new, you both used to always be nightowls back home but coming out to Colorado to visit your boyfriend at school, there never seemed to be enough time to talk so it was only amplified with borrowed time.
You adored nights where you faced Jimmy in his twin sized bed, his long limbs tangled with yours as he ran his hand up and down your arm while you talked about whatever. There were once stars in his honey eyes whenever he looked at you but you never expected this.
This was something you both agreed to make work, when he decided on Colorado to play ball for. Now all of a sudden there was a switch up, as you sat on a bench in the city down town, which was a pretty walk from campus.
“I…don’t understand.” You managed to get out, after the sound of ringing went away from your ears, “You want space? I thought 6 hours and thirty-eight minutes was enough?”
Jimmy, who still sat with one arm tossed behind you on the bench, while his other hand held on tightly to the crumbled up paper bag that once contained a blueberry scone, kept his eyes trained down on his lap, “I just feel like…maybe we should take a break. Things are heating up with the team, the pressure is constantly on with keeping up with school work—
You understood that part.
Confiding in one another when you called, texted, or FaceTimed just to see how one another’s day went, you knew the stress that came with school. It was something that was heavily prioritized by your family to get through and you did. College wasn’t for you much to your family’s disappointment but you chose to be thrown into the working world of New Mexico, just to get through but it was not a place you wanted to forever be stuck in. That was often expressed and you couldn’t be more than happy for Jimmy when he chose a city out of state.
Taking the drive either with Dezbah and Bryson, sometimes even Mrs. Gloria (Who no longer had warrants), or simply by yourself was the escape you needed. You loved the open road and being with Jimmy, it took time to figure it out and just to be together but now he wanted to call it quits. There really weren’t any warnings.
“So…I’m adding to that pressure?”
Jimmy clenched his eyes shut at your words, “No. I wouldn’t say that. Things have always felt right between us—
“Until it goes wrong,” you muttered.
“What’s that supposed to mean?” Jimmy questions, now pressing his elbows into his knees, leaning over in attempt to stop the stomachache that was now forming as he was having this hard conversation with you.
Huffing out a laugh, you shifted your body sideways so you can look at the short haired teen, “It was Rocky from the start between us because of uncertainties but I always said we wouldn’t know unless we tried. I wasn’t scared to love you. It was little childish shit, you letting people get in your head about us, me not speaking up about it and acting like whatever you did with other girls didn’t bother me, then playing around with Krista and I because you didn’t know what you truly wanted.”
“I chose you, though.” Jimmy voiced, hating that he put you through that.
It was always the three of you at the beginning until it unfortunately became two. You’ve always been around and just foolishly waiting. It’s not like Jimmy ever had a serious girlfriend before you, he just like entertaining the ones who wanted to have his babies and it sucked to watch. Plus you had a fling and then a serious relationship while just being Jimmy’s friend and it was obvious he never liked any of the dudes you dealt with. He just hid it, not well but at least he tried. When he suddenly kissed you at that party that night—granted he was high and it was a stupid game of spin the roaches in the bottle (it didn’t land on you but the girl next to you)—it confirmed everything that your heart’s been trying to tell you for the longest.
There was a reason that kiss needed to happen.
Yet you sat on that for a while and Jimmy showed interest in Krista.
“Then tell me why you’re choosing to break up with me and right before the holidays too? Just tell it to me straight, what’s the reason, Jimmy? I deserve to know why.” You exasperated, feeling your drumming heartbeat in your ears now.
Jimmy’s rubbing at his face now, the bags underneath his eyes felt heavier. He was going to say something that he didn’t mean, “I just don’t want to do this anymore. Once I go pro, I don’t think I can even trust myself around any of the other girls alright? It’s like you said, I went back and forth between you and Krista once. Who’s to say I won’t do it again?”
Shock washes over your body. You couldn’t believe the guy that you once knew would fix his mouth to say this to you. It felt unreal, like a nightmare that you needed to wake up from. Of course there was always the potential of groupies getting at Jimmy, it was the same back in high school but you thought he loved you enough, after everything not to disrespect you like this.
“…what’s the number one reason you fell in love with me then?” Was your response, which made Jimmy lift his eyes and flick to you.
Staring at you like this, was enough to break Jimmy’s heart. He hated that he was putting you through this again but he didn’t think he could keep up. It was all too much but that didn’t mean you were too much for him. It was everything else and he wished he knew how to communicate that better.
Jimmy Holiday loves you because you inspired him to be more than what he is. He loves you because you always made time for him, even with this newfound distance, he loves you for your patience, sense of direction, and your good heart. There were many reasons to love you, he’s said them before but today he couldn’t.
“If you can’t remember, then I guess you’re right, I don’t need to be here anymore. And we don’t need to continue doing this. I won’t let you sideline me again.” You say, feeling like you gave him more than enough time to say something, to be honest, and have some decency.
What changed?
Jimmy often got in his head about many of things, you can blame it on a lot but you thought you were past this. Experienced some growth but you couldn’t keep putting your mental health through this. As much as you love Jimmy, if he wanted out and just off the hurtful things he just said, then you had no problem being on your way. If that’s how he wanted it, fine.
You’re on your feet and it feels like Jimmy’s heart is being squeezed in someone’s fist.
“I…I’m sorry.”
You lift your shoulders, watery smile appearing on your lips as you deeply inhale. Stepping forward, you grip Jimmy’s shoulder’s, leaning down to place a kiss on Jimmy’s brow. He closes his eyes at your touch, struggling to swallow down the lump in his throat.
“Take care of yourself, Jimmy Holiday.” You whisper into the crisp air and just like that, you were gone just like the tumble of brown leaves on the ground.
He wanted to go after you, knowing that you were most likely going back to the dorm to collect your things and hit the road. Perhaps his biggest regret once he gets back to see all of your things no longer around, every trace of you gone but that certainly wasn’t true. Jimmy sits on the edge of his bed, staring down at the screensaver of you two just before his roommate enters back in the room, asking what’s up with him.
Jimmy can’t even get the words out himself, shaking his head with his fist going to his mouth and he clenched his eyes shut once more.
Whereas you’re on the road, leaving the mountains behind and venting to Dezbah on the long drive.
“Yooo, What the hell did you do?” Bryson quizzed, as soon as Jimmy took his sweet time answering the phone, coming back from the showers.
Jimmy lays back on his bed, phone pressed to his ear. “I lost, bro. And I think I’m about to realize just how much.”

Rez Ball
Netflix's movie Rez Ball was great. It's about a Navajo high school basketball team.
Some parts were fun, others were sad, but it was a beautiful story.
The coach is a bisexual woman.

Ok guys i lowkey just got a really good sad idea for like Embry x Reader or Paul x reader or like any guy from the Pack
Basically using those lines from the movie Rez ball (10/10 movie, definitely recommend, i cried ..) anyways use the lines that go “Do you ever think about… getting out?” “From the rez? ofc i do”
“like really getting out… for good?..”
maybe it’s like a flashback to where the reader asks said pack member that and then it cuts to the members shifting and actually not being able to get out from the rez
OR
A pack member asks the reader that and its cuts to the member shifting and the reader leaving for good..
and maybe to make it sadder for the second one maybe said pack member imprints on reader but can’t tell her/him/them cause they left before pack member tells them?
or if y’all want it to end wholesome maybe while the reader is packing, said member comes and tell her everything (them shifting, imprinting on reader, basically everything) and convinced reader to stay and they live happily ever after
but anyways if anyone uses this idea please tag me!! i would lovee to see and read how y’all write it!!
(lil edit: but if you guys decide to watch Rez Ball, it’s only available on Netflix, But Julia Jones and Kiowa Gordon (who play Leah and Embry) are in that movie *wink wink*)

Taking place over a season in the life of basketball players from a Native American reservation, Rez Ball is the lightning-fast story of a team of underdogs fighting for a state championship. Directed by Sydney Freeland (Drunktown’s Finest), who co-wrote the script with Sterlin Harjo (Reservation Dogs), and produced by LeBron James himself, this is a sports story you won’t want to miss.
For Freeland, who told Netflix that she’s a “huge basketball fan” who also “loves to play” and competed in high school, Rez Ball is a story that she and Harjo were committed to telling “from the inside out.” This meant drawing from their own experiences growing up and being a part of the game.
Freeland said, “You have these small arenas, but they’re just packed with people. Where we were, we don’t have professional teams. We don’t have college teams. A lot of that falls on high school; where a lot of these Native teams have had the most success is the high school level. So you get this huge turnout and this rabid fan base. So for us, it was like, ‘Oh, this is West Texas high school football. This is Friday Night Lights, but it is from an Indigenous perspective.’ ”

Just watched Rez Ball (2024) on Netflix! About a Diné high school basketball team's climb from a brutal shock when the star player kills himself (and how the team of young boys and the Navajo community process that loss while fighting to stay in the game) to the reaches of winning the state championship. Just under 2hours, and the editing is incredible, especially during the basketball games (which makes sense since LeBron James produced). Also made me incredibly nostalgic for the time I visited the reservation and volunteered with 2nd graders as a high schooler myself...the streets, the houses, the friendliness, the dogs, the people, the incredible landscape......really, 10/10 film
