Part 17
Series Masterlist
Too Bad Your Ex Don’t Do It For Ya
💋💛💋💛💋💛💋💛💋💛💋💛💋💛💋💛💋
In your emotional state, you turn to Megan for support. The conversation oscillates between sadness, anger, and frantic overthinking thoughts. You pour out your emotions, expressing frustration over the argument with Hugh and the complexities of dealing with his family, especially Ava.
Megan listens intently, her empathetic presence a comforting influence, providing a safe space for your emotions to run their course.
Your voice breaks as you utter the words, "He's totally going to break up with me." Your tears continue to flow, the worry and fear evident in your eyes.
Megan’s expression softens in understanding and concern. She reaches out, placing a comforting hand on your shoulder. "Hey, don’t say that," she responds softly but firmly. "You guys just had a fight. It doesn't mean he's going to break up with you."
Your words are a mixture of sadness and resignation, a reflection of the insecurity you're feeling. "When it comes down to his kids and his girlfriend," you say, your voice wavering, "I’m pretty sure he's going to pick his kid.”
Megan frowns, her expression a mix of understanding and empathy. She shakes her head, giving your shoulder a gentle squeeze. "It doesn't have to be like that," she reassures you. "He's likely just trying to find a balance."
Your frustration peaks as you let out a heavy sigh and throw yourself onto your bed. "Ugh, she's just...so UGH!" you exclaim, your voice tinged with annoyance.
Megan sits on the edge of your bed, listening intently. She can see how much the situation with Ava is weighing on you.
As you lay there consumed by frustration, Megan grabs your hands, pulling you up to a standing position. Her touch is gentle but firm, demanding your attention.
You straighten up, looking at her with a mixture of surprise and annoyance. Her eyes meet yours, unwavering. Megan's firm yet gentle command snaps you out of your frustration momentarily. "You need a drink," she states, her tone brooking no argument.
You take a deep breath, the suggestion of alcohol appealing at the moment after the argument and tears. A drink could help numb the emotional pain, at least temporarily.
Your mind is on board, but you hesitate for a moment. "I don’t know if that’s a good idea," you start, the practical side of you trying to reason through the situation. "Hugh-"
Megan cuts you off with a swift wave of her hand. "Hugh’s not here right now,” she interrupts, her eyes locking with yours. "I’m offering a distraction."
You surrender to Megan's insistence, the allure of distraction too tempting to resist. "Fine," you agree, the hint of resignation in your voice.
Megan grins, satisfied that she’s managed to convince you. She grabs your hand and leads you towards the door.
As you and Megan descend to the bar, Hugh was still struggling with the aftermath of the argument. He was seething with anger and confusion, pacing back and forth in his living room, running a hand through his hair.
Hugh’s mind replayed the argument with you over and over, his frustration mounting with each mental replay.
Hugh's frustration mounts as he paces back and forth in his living room. He pulls out his phone, his thumb scrolling through his contacts before he finds Ava's number. With a hint of determination, he dials her number.
“Hey Dad.”
Hugh's irritation fades slightly as he hears Ava's voice on the other end. "Hey, sweetie," he replies, his tone calmer than it had been moments before.
Hugh takes a moment before responding, the anger still faintly there under the surface. "Just wanted to talk," he says, trying to keep his tone casual. "How are you doing? You girls enjoy the show?”
“Yeah, it was fine. Jenna had an amazing time.”
Hugh's shoulders tense slightly at her casual response. "And how about you?" he presses, unable to completely hide the hint of annoyance in his voice. "You have a good time?"
“Sure.”
Hugh detects the slight hint of indifference in her response, and it only adds fuel to the fire of his frustration. "Just ‘sure’?" he retorts, his tone sharper now. "No other thoughts or feelings about the show? Or about (y/n)?”
“What do you want me to say, Dad?”
Hugh's frustration continues to build as he struggles to find the right words. "I want you to tell me how you really feel, Ava!" he snaps, his voice raising in pitch. "I want you to tell me what's really going on between you and (y/n).”
In the living room, Ava rolls her eyes and turns to her mother, who sits beside her on the couch. She scoffs, annoyance in her voice, and says loudly enough for Hugh to hear on the other end, "Oh my god."
Deborra laughs at her daughter’s reaction, shaking her head in a mix of disbelief and amusement. She clearly finds the situation somewhat humorous, much to Hugh's growing irritation.
On the other end of the phone, Hugh is able to hear the faint sound of Deborra's laughter, and it only serves to further irritate him. His grip on the phone tightens as he listens, biting his tongue to prevent himself from snapping at Ava right then and there.
“There’s nothing going on. What did she even say?”
Hugh's frustration and impatience grow as he listens to Ava’s nonchalant response. "There’s nothing going on?" he parrots back, his voice dripping with sarcasm. "Really? Then why is (y/n) upset with you? Why is she complaining about your comments?"
“It's not like she’s my first pick for a girlfriend. She’s like 5 years older than me!”
Hugh's irritation continues to climb as he listens to Ava's dismissive reply. "I don’t care if she's five years older than you," he shoots back, his tone firm. "She is someone I love, and she deserves your respect."
Ava’s casual dismissal only serves to anger Hugh further. He grips the phone tightly, his jaw tense. "Age has nothing to do with it," he counters, his voice rising. "It’s about basic decency and respect. Something you clearly don't seem to grasp."
“Fine, I’m sorry okay?”
Hugh’s frustration gives way to a moment of surprise as he hears Ava’s somewhat reluctant apology. He takes a deep breath, attempting to control his emotions.
"That's... a start," he replies, his voice quieter but still tinged with irritation. "But you need to apologize to (y/n). She’s here so change the attitude.”
Ava rolls her eyes again, irritated by the suggestion. "Fine, I’ll apologize to her," she replies, her voice laced with teenage annoyance. "But I’m not happy about it, okay?"
Hugh lets out a low sigh, recognizing the frustration in her tone. "I’m not asking you to be happy about it, I’m asking you to be sincere," he responds, his voice stern. "And I expect you to watch your attitude from now on, got it?"
Hugh's frustration slowly starts to subside as he reflects on the conversation with Ava. He glances at the time and realizes it's getting late. Despite the time, he can't shake the thought of you going to bed angry and upset.
With determination, Hugh grabs his keys and makes his way out of his apartment. He heads towards your apartment, hoping to find a way to resolve the argument and mend the cracks in your relationship.
Back at the bar, you and Megan are in high spirits, the alcohol flowing and the conversation flowing. You've both been drinking quite a bit, the effects of the alcohol evident in your flushed faces and laughter.
As the night progresses, you and Megan grow more and more intoxicated, the alcohol loosening your inhibitions and your tongues.
Your inhibitions loosened by the alcohol, you and Megan are having a great time, singing and dancing as if there are no worries in the world. Laughter and cheer fill the atmosphere as you let loose, enjoying the carefree atmosphere.
Hugh stands outside your apartment, his finger hovering over the call button on his phone. He glances upwards, as if debating his next move. After a moment’s hesitation, he takes a deep breath and dials your number.
As the phone rings, Hugh waits anxiously, hoping that you'll answer.
Your heart skips a beat as your phone buzzes and Hugh's name appears on the screen. The alcohol in your system has made your emotions even more intense, and you feel a mixture of love, guilt, and frustration.
Megan sees the expression on your face and notices the name on the screen. She raises an eyebrow, expecting the drama that might unfold in the next few minutes.
You look at the phone for a moment, the ringtone piercing through the alcohol-induced haze around you. Your heart races as you contemplate answering, the emotions you felt earlier rushing back.
Finally, after a few seconds, you pick up the phone, your voice surprisingly clear despite the alcohol. "Hello?"
Hugh lets out a small sigh of relief as you pick up the phone. He had been expecting either no answer or a brusque greeting. Hearing your voice, clear and familiar, makes his heart pang with a mixture of relief and guilt.
Hugh can hear the sound of music and chatter in the background, the distinct ambiance of a bar. He takes a deep breath, the realization of your location instantly flooding his mind with various emotions. “I spoke with, Ava.” Your heart skips a beat as Hugh mentions Ava. The alcohol has made you more reactive, and you grip your phone tightly. "You did?" you reply, your voice betraying a hint of nervousness.
Hugh notices the slight nervousness in your voice, and he pauses for a moment, choosing his words carefully. "Yeah, I did," he confirms, his tone a mix of seriousness and concern. "I told her to apologize to you."
Your heart flutters at Hugh's words, a mix of disbelief and relief washing over you. "She's going to apologize?" you ask, your voice still tinged with a hint of disbelief. Megan perks up at your response, her wide eyes meeting yours. The alcohol has lowered her inhibitions as well, and she can't help but interject with a tone of mild skepticism. "She just agreed to apologize? Just like that?"
Your cheeks flush a bit as Megan chimes in, her words reflecting the disbelief you're feeling. "Yeah," you reply, your voice still tinged with a hint of surprise. "Hugh says she's going to apologize."
Hugh, hearing you and Megan's conversation and noticing your mild surprise, can't help but smile on the other end. He interjects, his voice filled with a mix of concern and care. "Do you need me to come pick you two up?" he offers.
You consider his offer for a moment, a wave of conflicting emotions coursing through you. Part of you wants to see him right now, to feel his comfort and reassurance. But another part of you is still reeling from the earlier argument, and you're not sure if you're ready to face him just yet, especially in your inebriated state.
“We can make it.”
Hugh can hear the strain in your voice as you reply. He's perceptive enough to pick up on your hesitation, and he can sense the indecision in your words. "You sure?" he asks, his concern growing stronger. “Yes, baby.”
Hugh signed, “then at least come over tomorrow? Just me for the morning, then Ava will come over and apologize face to face to you.”
Hugh lets out a sigh of relief, your agreement bringing a sense of comfort to him. "Alright," he responds, his voice slightly more relaxed. "I'll see you tomorrow then. Just us." You feel a strange mix of excitement and trepidation as you agree to the plan. Spending time alone with Hugh sounds appealing, but the thought of Ava's impending apology still weighs on your mind.
“Okay… I love you.”
Hugh's heart skips a beat as he hears your words. Despite everything that's happened, the argument and the stress, he can't help but feel a surge of affection upon hearing your declaration of love. "I love you too," he responds, his voice tinged with a mix of relief and affection.
You hang up the phone, a small smile tugging at the corners of your lips as you turn to Megan. Her words, reassuring as always, bring some solace to the storm of emotions within you.
"I guess you were right," you reply, a hint of relief in your voice. "Hugh was just trying to find that balance between his relationship with Ava and with me."
Hugh woke up early the next morning, determined to make the day special for you. He ordered your favorite breakfast and brews a fresh pot of coffee, wanting to set the scene perfectly for your day together.
In addition to the breakfast, Hugh also decided to surprise you with some gifts. He picked out a bouquet of beautiful flowers, a thoughtful yet simple gesture to show his love for you.
Hugh had been anxiously waiting for your arrival, pacing around his apartment and straightening up the place to make sure everything was perfect. When he heard the knock at the door, he practically sprinted to open it, his heart pounding with anticipation.
As he opened the door and saw you standing there, looking beautiful and slightly disheveled from the previous night, a warm smile spread across his face.
“Hey, stranger.”
Hugh's smile widened at your playful greeting. Despite everything that had happened, he couldn't help but feel a sense of excitement and relief to have you there.
"Hey there," he replies, leaning against the door frame and taking you in. "You look... well, you look beautiful."
As you step into the apartment and wrap your arms around him, Hugh instinctively pulls you close, savoring the feeling of you in his embrace. The connection between you feels almost magnetic, as if the previous night's argument had never happened.
"I missed you," he whispers into your hair, his voice filled with sincerity and affection. “I missed you too.” You sigh and continue, “listen, I’m sorry. I just have never dealt with this before. I understand it’s a delicate thing.”
Hugh holds you closer, his grip tightening slightly. "Hey, it's okay," he reassures you, his fingers gently massaging your back. "I understand it's uncharted territory. It's new for both of us, and it comes with its challenges."
He pauses for a moment, holding you close, before continuing. "I want us to figure this out together if that's alright with you."
“What time is Ava coming?”
Hugh takes a deep breath, his mind momentarily shifting to the impending arrival of Ava. He glances at the clock on the wall before answering.
"She said she'd be here around noon," he says, a hint of nervousness in his voice. "Gives us a few hours to ourselves before she gets here."
You nod, processing the information. The mention of Ava's arrival brings a mix of anticipation and a bit of anxiety. "Right, so we have a little time just for us, then," you reply, your eyes flicking up to his.
“Care to show me how sorry you are?”
Hugh raises an eyebrow at your playfully suggestive tone, a smile tugging at the corners of his lips. He leans closer, one hand resting on your hip while the other tilts your chin up to meet his gaze, "You want me to show you just how sorry I am?"
In a swift motion, Hugh pulled you against him, his lips crushing yours in a hungry kiss. His hands roamed over your body, molding your curves, igniting a fire within you. You responded eagerly, your tongue dueling with his, tasting the remnants of coffee and the unique flavor that was purely Hugh.
Breaking the kiss, he trailed hot, open-mouthed kisses along your jawline, down your neck, making you shiver with desire. His hands found the hem of your dress, sliding it slowly upwards, baring your thighs to his touch. "God, I've missed the feel of your skin," he groaned against your ear, his breath hot and raspy.
You moaned softly, arching into his touch, your hands tangling in his hair, urging him on. Hugh's fingers traced the lace waistband of your panties, teasing the sensitive skin beneath before slowly sliding them down your legs, leaving you exposed and wanting.
Stepping back, he took in the sight of you, your naked desire on full display. "You're so beautiful," he rasped, his eyes dark with lust. "I need to taste you."
With that, he went down on his knees before you, his hands gripping your thighs, spreading them apart. His warm breath caressed your intimate folds, sending shivers of anticipation through your body. Hugh's tongue darted out, tracing your slit, collecting your essence, before plunging deep into your wetness.
You cried out, grasping his shoulders for support as his mouth worked its magic. His tongue flicked and swirled, finding all the right spots, driving you wild with pleasure.
He sucked on your clit, drawing it into his mouth, sending waves of ecstasy through your body. Your hips bucked against his face, seeking more, pleading for release.
Hugh's hands held you firmly in place, his fingers digging into your flesh as he feasted on your pussy, his moans of pleasure vibrating against your sensitive flesh. You were lost in a haze of sensation, your body trembling on the precipice of orgasm.
"Oh God, Hugh," you gasped, your fingers tightening in his hair. "I'm gonna come..."
He growled in response, his mouth working feverishly, his tongue and lips never leaving your throbbing clit. And then, with one final flick of his tongue, you exploded, crying out his name as your orgasm ripped through you, leaving you trembling and spent.
Hugh slowly withdrew, his face glistening with your essence, a satisfied smile on his lips, “how’s that for a start?”
Hugh stood up from the couch, breaking the comfortable moment between you.
"There’s Ava," he said, his voice tinged with a hint of tension as he approached the door. Taking a deep breath, he opened it, revealing Ava standing on the other side. Along with her mother…
Your eyes widen in surprise as you notice Deborra standing beside Ava at the doorstep. You hadn't expected her to accompany Ava. The air in the room suddenly feels heavy with tension, and you can feel a sense of unease settle in.
Deborra offers you a tight-lipped smile, her eyes scanning over you before shifting to Hugh. "I wanted to accompany Ava today," she explains, her voice slightly frosty.
Hugh looks taken aback by Deborra's presence but quickly composes himself. "Ah, that's unexpected," he responds, his tone neutral. "Please, come in." He steps aside to allow them both to enter the apartment.
Deborra steps into the apartment, her eyes still fixed on you. You can't help but feel like you're being interrogated as her gaze lingers on you. It's intense and a bit unnerving, making you feel a bit like a naughty child being reprimanded.
You take a deep breath and push back any feelings of unease. With a polite smile, you mustered up the courage to address Deborra directly.
"Good afternoon, Deborra," you say, your voice surprisingly steady despite the tension in the air. "It's nice to finally meet you."
Deborra's expression doesn't soften much upon hearing your greeting. She nods slightly in acknowledgment, but her gaze remains intense.
Hugh stands nearby, watching the interaction between you and Deborra with a slight furrow in his brow. He can sense the tension and discomfort but stays silent for the moment.
Silence hangs awkwardly in the air for a few moments, the tension palpable. Hugh clears his throat, breaking the silence.
"Why don't we all sit down?" he suggests, motioning towards the living area.
The atmosphere in the room is so tense that you feel like you could cut it with a knife. You shift uncomfortably, feeling the weight of Deborra's intense stare upon you. You can practically hear your own heart beating in your ears.
Hugh, clearly noticing your unease, takes a step closer to you, offering a subtle show of support by gently placing a hand on your back.
Despite the palpable tension, you feel compelled to be polite and hospitable.
"Can I offer anyone something to drink?" you ask, forcing a smile and addressing both Deborra and Ava. "Coffee, tea, juice?"
Deborra glances at you for a moment, her expression unreadable. Ava, on the other hand, looks a bit more relaxed, but still somewhat uncomfortable.
Hugh, sensing that the tension needs to break, glances at Ava. His voice is slightly firm, yet gentle, as he addresses her.
"Ava, I think there's something you wanted to say," he prompts, his gaze fixed upon her.
Ava's eyes widen slightly as she's put on the spot. She casts a quick glance at Deborra before nodding in response.
"Right," she mutters, her voice hesitant. "I did want to say something."
Deborra watches her daughter with a mixture of expectations. Hugh, sensing the significance of the moment, steps back to give Ava the floor.
Ava looks at you with a forced smile that doesn’t reach her eyes. Her words come out measured, as if she’s reciting a memorized script. "I apologize for my rudeness and disrespect towards you," she says, her tone lacking true remorse. "It’s just taking me some time to get used to everything."
Deborra stands beside her, a fake smile plastered on her face, her eyes darting between you and Ava with calculated nonchalance. The whole situation feels orchestrated and insincere.
You smile, “I really appreciate the apology, Ava. I know this is different and will take time, but I want you to know I really care about your dad, and you and your brother.”
Ava's expression remains guarded, but there's a hint of softening in her eyes as she listens to you. Deborra continues to watch you both closely, her smile still fake and forced.
"Yeah," Ava mutters, her voice betraying the slightest hint of vulnerability. "I know you do. It's just weird, you know?"
Hugh stands, attempting to break the tension in the room with a casual suggestion.
"How about we break out those cookies you ordered?" he says, glancing at you. "I think a little sweetness might help lighten the mood."
You nod, “I got crumble. They had the Oreo cookie you like. I got 2 of them for you, Ava.” Ava, whose expression has softened slightly, perks up a bit at the mention of her favorite cookies.
"You got me two Oreo?" she asks, a hint of intrigue in her voice.
You can't help but crack a small smile as you see Ava excitedly follow Hugh into the kitchen. But Deborra's insincere words cut through the moment.
"Look at you," she says with a false grin. "Stepmom of the year, huh?"
Her words carry a hint of sarcasm, making the compliment feel more like a subtle jab.
You instinctively feel a flicker of anger at Deborra's comment, but you try to maintain your composure. You give her a polite smile, masking your true feelings.
"No. Just trying to find even ground," you reply, your voice cool and even. Deb humed without hesitation, “good luck.”
Deborra's smirk is enough to send a jolt of irritation through you. Her comment feels dismissive and sarcastic. You take a deep breath, trying to hold back your frustration.
"Thanks," you reply, your tone polite yet laced with thinly veiled annoyance.
Over the course of the following weeks, Ava began to warm up to you, and a connection between the two of you started to take root. You discovered shared interests and engaged in conversations filled with genuine substance, creating a bond based on mutual understanding and common ground. These interactions not only strengthened your connection but also provided a source of comfort and companionship, allowing you to find solace in each other's company.
You found yourself sitting with Hugh in his cozy apartment, enjoying a peaceful moment of silence as you shared each other's presence. The soft stillness of the room enveloped you, creating a comfortable and relaxed atmosphere that allowed your minds to wander and your thoughts to flow gently. It was a pleasant respite from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, a time to simply be together and relish in the simple joy of each other's company.
Hugh's face lit up with a smile as his phone rang, and he answered it with genuine affection. "Hey, sweetheart," he spoke into the phone. His gaze then shifted towards you as he added, "It's Ava." His tone held a hint of surprise and excitement, as if sharing the news with you held significance in some way.
Hugh chuckled as he listened to the excited voice on the other end of the line, and you could practically feel the excitement emanating through the phone. "Mom's booked us all a trip to St. Barts!" The words hung in the air, a testament to the anticipation and joy that the news had ignited within Ava.
Hugh responded to Ava on the phone with a warm and supportive tone. "Well, sweetie, that sounds great! I hope you three have a fantastic time." His words echoed with genuine enthusiasm for Ava and the upcoming trip.
“You and (y/n) are coming, right? Mom said she was going to call you.” The news stunned Hugh momentarily, a mix of surprise and hesitation evident in his eyes as he listened to Ava's words. "Wait, you're kidding," he said into the phone, a touch of disbelief in his voice. But Ava's response was unwavering, her voice filled with eagerness as she confirmed, "Nope, you and (Y/N) are invited. Mom said so!"
You stared at Hugh in a state of shock, your eyes widening at the mention of Debbora's invitation. The news was unexpected and puzzling, as you couldn't imagine Debbora willingly wanting you on their family vacation. Doubt and uncertainty swirled in your mind, making you question the sincerity of the invitation.
The moment Hugh ended the call, you remained frozen in a state of disbelief, your mind still struggling to process the unexpected invitation from Debbora. The silence hung heavy in the air as you tried to make sense of the situation.
The thought ran through your mind, causing a wave of unease to wash over you. "Is she planning to kill me on this trip?" you muttered, voicing your apprehension aloud. The thought of spending time with Debbora on a family vacation, especially considering the strained relationship between the two of you, was a source of anxiety and uncertainty.
Hugh chuckled at your comment, trying to alleviate your worry. "Don't worry, I'm sure she's not planning to kill you." He reassured you with a smile. He could see the concern etched on your face and wanted to offer some comfort.
Hugh's smile widened as he considered the possibilities behind Debbora's invitation, and the decision to include you in the vacation plans. Perhaps his ex-wife was finally coming to realize the significance of fostering a healthy dynamic within their family and had finally recognized your important role in her children's lives.
But that optimistic air quickly faded as you reminded yourself of the possibility that Debbora's invitation was not as genuine as it seemed. The thought of ulterior motives or hidden intentions cast a shadow of doubt over your initial optimism.

Companion piece to:
Buried Socks: Ceberus has a unique way of showing how much he misses you.
Brock realises he wants to marry you during a firefight in Afghanistan. His team is pinned down on one of the roads leading up to the compound where they’re situated. It’s an ambush, one they didn’t expect because they’re practically on home turf, they can see the fucking fence in the distance but as ordered no one is coming out to help.
I swear to Jesus, he prays as the firestorm rages on around him. If you get us the fuck out of here I will put a ring on that woman’s finger.
It’s then that a sniper’s bullet takes down the operator of the machine gun mounted on the back of one of the insurgent’s Jeeps. It’s followed by another and then another until the tide turns and they’re able to take out the assault team and haul ass to the encampment.
It’s an hour later that you show up. Your rifle is slung over your shoulder and there’s a checkered head scarf covering your hair. The front of your clothing is covered in dust from lying in the dirt, your gun trained on the junction where they were attacked.
“You’re in a lot of trouble Nightingale, Commander Harrington is looking to tear you a new one.” One of the guys on the gate tells you and you shrug your shoulders because you don’t really give a fuck, not when you’ve just saved the life of the man you love and his team.
They call you The Nightingale because you’re beautiful, deadly and your first name is Florance. Your commanding officer calls you a complete pain in the ass and worse when he reams you out for insubordination. They can hear it vibrating through the command post as he bellows so loud at one point his voice breaks. His problem is, he can’t get rid of you. You’re on loan to the Navy from the Army because there’s a shortage of snipers with your skill set. So he has to put up with your shit otherwise the Army takes their shiny toy away and leaves them in the hands of someone far less capable.
It's that night that Brock sneaks into your quarters, the same way he’s been doing every night since you took up residence on base. He fucks you into the mattress, his palm clasped over your mouth because his girl gets a little loud when she’s coming on his cock and these walls are paper thin.
It’s in the aftermath when he’s laying tangled up in that single cot with you that he proposes to you. You’re draped across his chest, half asleep, when he tips your chin up to meet his gaze.
“Marry me.” He whispers, his thumb chasing over the apple of your cheek.
“Ask me when we get home.” You say and it feels like a knife plunging into his chest. “You had a close call today…”
“That’s not what this is.” He responds and you give him that look, the one he fucking hates because it makes him feel like he’s being overemotional. “It isn’t!”
“Would you have asked me if this hadn’t happened?” You say, shifting so you’re in a sitting position against the wall.
The truth is no, probably not and it pisses him off because it shouldn’t take a fucking fire fight to remind him just how fleeting life can be, how precious you are to him.
“Think about it.” You say softly as he takes up residence against the wall alongside you. Your fingers entwine with his and he tilts his head towards you so he can look into your eyes. “And if you still feel the same way when we get home, get a ring and ask me again.”

After TSR died and was brought back to an undead half-life by Wizards of the Coast, there came a set of adventures that returned to classic 1e adventure sites. The first was 1998’s Return to the Tomb of Horrors box set (which I covered a while back). It was followed a trio of “silver anniversary” branded books and modules, first of which was Against the Giants: The Liberation of Geoff (1999). I know Geoff is a dutchy or whatever in Greyhawk, but I still have a hard time with the title because it sounds like it should be a novel about a guy named Geoff’s sexual awakening, possibly written by D. H. Lawrence.
Anyway, Geoff was invaded and subjugated by giants. You need to kick ‘em out. The first section of the book presents the original G-series modules, updated to 2E. That’s followed by a general sort of sourcebook on Geoff, which is further divided into a collection of adventure sites which are basically towns subjugated by various evil humanoids — orc town, ogre town, wererat town. The three main locales (each accompanied by a couple minor locations) form up three additions G-series modules, sorta. There’s G4: Mount Rungnirheim (more frost giants?), G5: Castle Thrasmotnir (more fire giants?) and G6: Cloud Islands of the Sakhut (cloud giants). It is odd to me that we got more frost and fire (god, just typing that out, I heard it sung by Cirith Ungol) when the stone giants and storm giants are out there, getting no love. The second batch of frost giants at least are prone to having multiple heads, which seems weird but also I like it.
And that’s…basically it. If you want more giants, you got more giants! The book mostly shrugs at the original G-series sub-plot involving the drow — if you finished G3, the plot’s been disrupted, the caves collapsed, the drow in retreat for however long it takes them to build up their nerve again. I’m OK with that!
Brom on the cover. Wayne Reynolds inside. It’s a good looking module.

Really liking the new Eidolon novel so far (50% read-live-review)!
Obviously - spoilers for "Eidolon - The Auric Hammer"!
Collins retcons quite a few things about the Lord Commander Primus - so Eidolon now joins ranks with Sanguinius' hair colour, Fulgrim's eyes or Lucius' first death.
In that case: Our beloved screamy guy is no longer a chemosian noble, but terran. And even joins the ranks of the famous 200! (muffled angry Fabius-noises in the background)
At first I had quite a few problems with it. As I had considerable difficulty engaging with the book in general, as it starts in a very cookie cutter way - the Third Legion gets its all too familiar glaze brushed over it (you know, like, "depravity" ...) and I had a few nasty flashbacks to the less talented writers who have had their way with Fulgrim's sons in the past.
But gradually Collins shakes off this stuffy mantle and finds a language of his own. Which, to my immense delight, reminds me a lot of Josh Reynolds! He's not quite ready to give the characters the degree of autonomy and depth that makes Reynolds' protagonists so interesting down to the last supporting role, but he's making great strides towards the dry melancholy and sarcastic tragedy that have made the Fabius books and the Fulgrim Primarch novel such a distinctive pleasure to read.
And honestly - he had me with this amusing nod to Tennyson!
‘Some weakling brother who yearned to follow the primarch, I imagine. There are countless of them. Lotus-eating fools who would have followed Julius into yet deeper madnesses. No use at all, unless you required someone to run at the enemy screaming of their own apotheosis. You were meat, once. Now you are just a figment.’
Marc Collins. Eidolon: The Auric Hammer
That's why I'm now embarking on the second half of the novel with renewed enthusiasm. In the constant hope that my favourite Astartes might now once again have an author who loves them as much as I do and who can do justice to their tragic grandeur.
"Courage!" he said, and pointed toward the land, "This mounting wave will roll us shoreward soon." In the afternoon they came unto a land In which it seemed always afternoon. All round the coast the languid air did swoon, Breathing like one that hath a weary dream. Full-faced above the valley stood the moon; And like a downward smoke, the slender stream Along the cliff to fall and pause and fall did seem.

implausible historical scenario: southern alexander hamilton (pt 2: washington's version)
Part 1: Grows up with Lavien, tragic lams version
here's the second scenario that would make southern A. Ham a possibility:
The rumors are true and he actually is Washington's son - I know, I know, I can hear Hamilton rolling in his grave already. But there's a reason the rumors circulated, it's really fucking interesting!
We know for a fact that the real Washington was minding his business 1754-1757, far away from Nevis - but he did go to Barbados with his brother in 1751. Let's pretend that he went back in an impromptu trip or that Lawrence managed to eek out a few more years, so they actually went later than 1751 (Unrelated, but him catching smallpox there + being exposed to Lawrence's tuberculosis might be the reason he was potentially infertile. If so, then the timing works out and doesn't conflict with his inability to have kids with Martha.) Maybe their ship was blown off course or needed some supplies, and stopped at Nevis. For whatever reason (my entertainment), he makes a series of questionable choices. Some people speculate that Alexander might have been the son of Stevens. I personally don't find this likely, but I can switch Stevens with Washington. I can and I did.
There are two main pathways I can see.
The first one most closely matches historical rumors and reality: no southern Hamilton. Washington leaves the West Indies oblivious, Ham comes to NYC, everything plays out the same - but at some point they figure out that he's his dad. People have already written a lot about this, but musical based, and for good reason. There's a lot of angst you can get out of it. Does Washington watch silently as Hamilton courts Elizabeth and is welcomed into the Schuyler family? Does Washington know that his son only had one friend at his own wedding? Worse, does Alexander still view James Hamilton as his dad, and beg him to come while ignoring the general? Do they work together better or worse than they do in reality? The possibilities! Imagine a world where there isn't a Reynolds Pamphlet but there is a Washington Pamphlet where Alexander confesses that he is the illegitimate son of the president after the Democratic Republicans got hold of some information. All of this is extremely soap opera, and almost embarassing in its drama but idc, it's fun.
Second, more divergent one: Yes, Alexander is illegitimate, but they find each other way earlier. It certainly wasn't uncommon for men of Washington's status to have bastards, and some did acknowledge their illegitimate children. Here, he'd be acknowledged, and raised in Virginia with the Custis kids (assuming Martha still marries George in 1759). I find this scenario intriguing for both the personal and political repercussions.
Personal repurcussions: would Hamilton have less issues if he was Washington's kid? Certainly his environment would be more stable, and Washington (given his frustration with a lazy Jacky Custis) would've been proud of such an intelligent, promising boy. People would be less eager to criticize/demean Hamilton (at least to his face), and he wouldn't be insecure in his class or geographical origin. I can also see him learning more political finesse and control if he grew up in Virginian society and with a steady, dedicated father. Would he have worked better with Washington if they were actually an acknowledged father-son relationship? Would Washington have planned to give Mount Vernon to him, since the Custis children already have their inheritance?
Now, if we assume that Hamilton’s policies remain constant, then his opponents lose even more major weapons than the Lavien world: perceived preference for the north and background. But then it also complicates Washington's legacy as general and president. Some historians argue that Washington having no perceived biological heir had some role in the trust people placed in him. If people know that Hamilton is his son, illegitimate or not, who has followed him through the war and into government, that's going to cause uneasiness. Maybe even do more damage to Washington's reputation than any real-life accusations of monarchy ever did, because this one actually has some weight. Ironically, it could be that this forces Alexander to be out of the running for the Secretary of Treasury position - having to work in the shadows, because the country is suspicious of anything and everything that looks like a king. More resentment!
But what if his beliefs do change? We get to see a Hamilton with connections to the south, just like the Lavien universe, but on crack. Because now his guardian isn’t just any southerner, he’s George Washington. It’s likely that just like Washington, going through the war would end up with him being a nationalist. But economically? If he didn't get that experience as a clerk in the West Indies (the period he said was the most educational of his life), or as an assistant to his merchant half-brother, then would he have the knowledge/insight to create his financial plan? Washington was on the same page as Hamilton, but Hamilton was doing the actual system-building. Going further, maybe growing up at Mt. Vernon happily and having only faint, distasteful memories of his tragic childhood in the West Indies actually makes him rear away from reminders of that life - maybe he has a fondness for agrarian lifestyle and lounging by trees reading philosophy, and an inherent dislike of merchants, business opportunists like james hamilton, trading, commerce. Maybe, god forbid, he ends up thinking a lot like Jefferson.
Who knows? A young Virginian Hamilton who has very close ties and pride connected to his country, meets an idealistic Thomas Jefferson and goes: "You are my role model and now I will emulate everything about you." People forget that Jefferson was 12 - 14 years older than Hamilton, it’s possible! The two didn’t hate each other right away! I can see them in this world bonding over Virginia and their intellect - perhaps, even if Hamilton veers towards being a nationalist, the lack of dispute on financial matters is enough for them to maintain a good relationship. There's even a possibility that Hamilton, like Madison, is a nationalist and writes the Federalist Papers but switches to the Jeffersonian side once Jefferson comes back. Certainly Madison and Jefferson would spend a lot of time trying to convince their wayward, fellow Virginian friend. Imagine a world where Washington is the biggest federalist and opposing his own son, who is in cahoots with a different Virginian in undermining his own presidency.
*Pats improbable scenario: this baby pumps out so much melodrama.
#can you tell that i really really want someone to write about this#i'm like praying for someone to write about this#can you imagine a jeffersonian hamilton like wtf#imagine the letters they would send to each other#jefferson & adams style#god i love making shit up#alexander hamilton#george washington#historical hamilton#george washingdad#amrev

Warriors — VoicePlay music video
youtube
When the guys started planning this project a few months earlier, they just wanted to record a cool song and make a visually interesting music video. Little did they know that it would be the last thing they filmed before events that felt like the end of the world happened in real life. The song's message of defiant resiliance was very needed, and they absolutely did it justice.
Details:
title: Warriors
original performers: Imagine Dragons
written by: Alexander "Alex da Kid" Grant, Josh Mosser, Abbie McGowan, Daniel Platzman, Dan Reynolds, & Wayne Sermon
arranged by: Layne Stein
release date: 20 March 2020
My favorite bits:
the gentle opening harmonies under Layne's mournful violin
starting with just their two lowest voices, then gradually layering in each singer and instrument to fill out the sound
Eli starting in a lovely clear tone, then adding just a touch of grit as the song builds in emotion
J.None getting in on the instrumental action with a little pizzicato
the wavering half-step violin line that enhances the mounting tension of the lyrics
their repeated use of moments of silence to build anticipation
the stomping percussion that sounds like marching
Earl's high, laser precise proclamation of ♫ "Heeere we are" ♫
the matching descent in Layne's violin part and Geoff's bass line in the middle of the first chorus
Layne providing his own contrary motion with ascending violin and syncopated descending tom hits 🎻 🥁
J's soft falsetto ♫ "from dust" ♫ that allows the first ♫ "WHOA" ♫ to smack you in the face with a wall of sound
the isolated start of Geoff's deep note contrasted with the stacatto harmonies of ♫ "here. we. are. don't. turn. a-way." ♫
Geoff's drop at the end of ♫ ⇘ "diii-IIIES" ⇘ ♫ under the other voices rising and crescendoing
that plaintive ♫ "Dooon't turn awaaay" ♫ counterpoint from J.None
the wind-down effect at the end of ♫ "built this town" ♫
that quick patter of ♫ "we built this town so don't turn away" ♫ punctuated by Eli's belted ♫ "NOOOW" ♫
the lush final unison in their respective octaves
Trivia:
This was the last video the guys recorded before Covid quarantine began, and their last location shoot for quite a while after.
The warehouse isn't an acutal abandoned building. It's a space owned by Best Shot Studios in nearby Sanford, FL specifically for such purposes.
They transported their gear to the location in a vehicle borrowed from Allen Arellano, father of Adriana who they'd featured in their "Frozen 2 medley" video a few months earlier.
Aesthetically, this is the first in a loose series of videos with a post-apocalyptic setting that has been continued in "Dream On" and "Seven Nation Army".
Although VoicePlay often make their vocal arrangements a little faster than the original compositions to maintain the listeners' interest, this one is slightly slowed down, which takes it from a frantic tempo to a more tempered determination. It also allowed them to show off their skills by adding more riffs and runs.
There is technically a B0 that can be heard in Geoff's vocals, but it was created artificially in post-production. He didn't actually record that note on his own until their "Halo theme" cover (also a Layne arrangement) a year and a half later.
Their seemingly scrounged costumes were once again created by stylist Tanya Buzu, who had previously dressed them for their "Beautiful Low" and "No Diggity / Shape of You" mashups in early 2017, as well as "Oogie Boogie's Song" the previous Halloween.
This video led to the coining of the nickname "VioLayne", an elusive and celebrated figure in VP lore who only appears when most needed. He's been playing since he was four years old.
The similarities of beatboxer-with-a-stringed-instrument led to many YouTube commenters suggesting a collaboration with Kevin Olusola from Pentatonix, who plays cello, and/or fellow violinist Lindsey Serling.
Other commenters were insistant that a single instrument in a single vocal arrangement made it "not real a cappella". 🙄 (I can be a pedant sometimes, but come on.)
The music video for the original song was used to promote the 2014 League of Legends World Championship. VoicePlay would cover another ID / LoL collaboration two years later with their version of the Arcane theme song "Enemy" featuring AleXa.
The guys got hyped up for filming by having a bit of a dance party during final rehearsals on location.
instagram
Geoff enjoyed that he got to keep his usual jewelry on, even in the grunginess of their wasteland aesthetic.
instagram
A couple of fans were inspired to capture the guys' post-apocalyptic looks in art.
drawings by Leon King
drawing by R. Mogiri (モギリ)
In a comment on VP's Instagram promo post, founding member Scott Porter asked why the guys are "always so dirty" in their more elaborate videos. (He got a chance to find out first hand a little over a year later.)

Anaxim
Image © Wizards of the Coast, by Wayne Reynolds
[Commissioned by @justicegundam82. The anaxim was one of the abominations in the D&D 3.0 Epic Level Handbook, and even in its initial appearance seemed like a strange fit. It doesn’t have an epic level CR, at CR 20, and it is the only non-evil abomination. 4e tried to reinvent them by moving them to the Forgotten Realms, and conflating them with a 2e monster family from Dragon Magazine, the sheen. Like most decisions involving the Realms in the 4e era, I hate this and am ignoring it.
My inspiration for the flavor text is as much from conversations with my followers as from any official source. Their first canon backstory is that they are the abandoned creations of a forge god who tried and failed to make an ultimate weapon. The commissioner suggested, in light of this and to give the anaxim something to do other than fight, that they be interested in “fixing” themselves. A conversation with @strawberry-crocodile about one of her upcoming commissions got me thinking about how Pathfinder RPG treats Law vs. Chaos as the big reality-defining conflict as opposed to Good vs. Evil (more traditional fantasy settings) or Evil vs. Evil (the Blood War). And, because of where I am in my life, there’s definitely an element of queer symbolism in this entry as well. Feel free to play that up, or play that down, depending on how you want to use the anaxim in your game.]
Anaxim CR 17 N Outsider (extraplanar) This mechanical thing is approximately human shaped, but nearly twice as broad. Its body seems to be made entirely of weapons—it has spinning blades mounted on its back, multiple hooks and cleavers growing along its arms, and a face like a knight’s helmet.
In the war between the inevitables and proteans, there are casualties. Most of these are outright fatalities, but in some cases, an inevitable becomes irreversibly changed by the forces of chaos. When this happens, the inevitable transforms into an anaxim. No two anaxim look identical, but all resemble loosely humanoid metal figures covered in weapons. The primary goal of most anaxim is perfection: making themselves whole and complete in a way that is unique to each individual. Many anaxim would also like to figure out a way to reliably replicate, one that didn’t rely on freak chance and outside intervention. A few anaxim are instead filled with self-loathing and seek to lash out at the forces that made them—these are the most dangerous.
A single anaxim is the equivalent of an entire mortal army, and they are able to go toe-to-toe with all but the most powerful proteans or inevitables alike. As anaxims value their own lives very highly, they usually start a combat cautiously, from a distance or with hit and run attacks. The spinning blades that grow between their shoulders are, when spun fast enough, able to act as a wing, granting the creature remarkable maneuverability for its weight. In addition to their impressive physical weaponry, an anaxim can use a number of spells for defense, and a powerful blast of sonic energy for offense.
Anaxims are insane by the standards of the inevitables, which means that they are capable of respecting and understanding multiple viewpoints. Some maintain a balanced approach to achieving their goals, while others veer wildly between chaotic and lawful behavior. On some occasions anaxim will gather together into groups if their views of perfection overlap. Its blade arms are primary natural weapons that deal slashing and piercing damage, and threaten a critical hit on a roll of 19-20. Its spinning blades are a primary natural weapon that deals slashing damage, and deals x3 damage on a successful critical hit. Control Construct (Su) Three times per day as a standard action, an anaxim can attempt to take over a construct within 60 feet. The construct can attempt a DC 25 Will save; if it fails, it is totally under the control of the anaxim for 24 hours. Creatures with the constructed defensive ability, such as inevitables, modrons and other anaxim, are susceptible to this effect as well. The save DC is Charisma based. Constructed (Ex) Although anaxim are living outsiders, their bodies are constructed of physical components, and in many ways they function as constructs. For the purposes of effects targeting creatures by type (such as a ranger's favored enemy and bane weapons), anaxim count as both outsiders and constructs. They are immune to death effects, disease, mind-affecting effects, necromancy effects, paralysis, poison, sleep, stun, and any effect that requires a Fortitude save (unless the effect also works on objects, or is harmless). Anaxim are not subject to nonlethal damage, ability damage, ability drain, fatigue, exhaustion, or energy drain. They are not at risk of death from massive damage. They have bonus hit points as constructs of their size. Anaxim do not need to breathe. Construct Maker (Ex) An anaxim has Craft Construct as a bonus feat. It gains a +4 racial bonus on all Spellcraft checks used in the manufacture of a construct. Sonic Cone (Su) Once every 1d4 rounds as a standard action, an anaxim can create a 60 foot cone of deadly sonic energy. All creatures in the area take 20d6 points of sonic damage and are staggered for 1 round. A successful DC 25 Reflex save halves the damage and negates the staggered condition. The save DC is Charisma based. Spikes (Ex) As a standard action, an anaxim can fire up to six spikes. Each spike is treated as a ranged weapon with a range increment of 100 feet. Each spike deals 1d8 damage plus the anaxim’s Strength modifier. An anaxim never runs out of spikes.

Mount Stuart
Mount Stuart is located on the east coast of the Isle of Bute in Scotland. The Gothic Revival country house was built in the 19th century. The house was built upon an earlier 18th century home severely damaged by a fire in 1877. The Georgian wings and much of the contents survived the fire and were incorporated into the new castle by the 3rd Marquess of Bute. The opulent interior boasts carved paneling, painted mirrors, a spiral staircase, a chapel, and much more. The Marble Hall has a map of stars on the ceiling and 12 stained glass windows depicting the signs of the zodiac moving through the seasons on the walls. The Gallery’s ceiling is decorated with winding branches from the Tree of Life, which frame the classical heads of 128 goddesses from ancient myth and legend. The house has collections of art and artifacts, including works by Ramsey, Reynolds, Gainsborough, as well as books, furniture, silverwork, porcelain, and Shakespeare’s First Folio. The estate has 300 acres of gardens that include a rock garden, a kitchen garden, an arboretum, and pinetums. The castle is used as a venue for weddings and corporate events. Mount Stuart can accommodate 37 guests in 22 separate areas around the house. There is a visitor center, a shop, and the Courtyard Café and Bakehouse.

Ryan, the youngest of four brothers, was born into a family with a strong sense of duty and discipline. His father, James Chester Reynolds, initially served as a Royal Canadian Mounted Policeman before switching to the food wholesaling business, while his mother, Tamara Lee, worked in retail. Growing up, Ryan was surrounded by a close-knit family, and two of his older brothers chose careers in law enforcement, following their father's footsteps. His family also had political ties, with his paternal grandfather, Chester Reynolds, having served as a politician in Alberta. Ryan was born on October 23, 1976.
He spent his early years in Vancouver, British Columbia, and attended Kitsilano Secondary School, where he studied alongside future actor Joshua Jackson. Ryan’s love for acting became evident in high school as he participated in various school productions. After finishing high school in 1994, he briefly attended Kwantlen Polytechnic University but quickly left to focus on acting.
Ryan’s acting journey began at age 13 when he landed a role in the Canadian teen series "Hillside," also known as "Fifteen" in the U.S. However, despite this early start, his career slowed down, and he even considered quitting acting altogether. At 19, he took a break from the industry, feeling frustrated with his lack of success. However, after some encouragement from his friend Chris William Martin, Ryan decided to give acting another try, and the two moved to Los Angeles.
Ryan’s breakthrough came in the late 1990s when he was cast as Michael "Berg" Bergen in the sitcom "Two Guys and a Girl," which ran from 1998 to 2001. This role helped Ryan gain recognition and led to more opportunities in Hollywood. He later moved into film, starring in comedies like "National Lampoon's Van Wilder" (2002) and romantic films such as "The Proposal" (2009), where he starred alongside Sandra Bullock.
Although Ryan initially made his name in comedic roles, he expanded into action with films like "Blade: Trinity" (2004). His willingness to explore new genres led him to take on physically demanding roles, eventually landing him in the world of superhero films.
Ryan’s defining moment came in 2016 with the release of "Deadpool." His portrayal of the witty and unconventional superhero became a massive hit, making the film one of the highest-grossing R-rated movies ever. Although the character had appeared earlier in "X-Men Origins: Wolverine" (2009), it was the standalone "Deadpool" movie that truly launched Ryan to new heights. He reprised the role in "Deadpool 2" (2018), both of which were praised for their humor and Ryan’s engaging performance.
Outside of acting, Ryan has ventured into the business world. In 2018, he became a part-owner of Aviation Gin, which he helped turn into a highly successful brand through his marketing efforts. In 2020, he sold the brand in a deal worth up to $610 million. Ryan is also a co-owner of the Welsh football club Wrexham AFC alongside Rob McElhenney. Their experiences as club owners were captured in the Emmy-winning series "Welcome to Wrexham."
Ryan’s personal life has drawn attention as well. He was once engaged to Canadian singer Alanis Morissette, but they ended their engagement in 2007. In 2008, he married actress Scarlett Johansson, though they divorced in 2011. He later married actress Blake Lively in 2012, and they now have four children together. The couple is known for their playful and humorous interactions on social media.
Despite his fame, Ryan has remained grounded, often discussing his struggles with anxiety. His openness on the subject has resonated with fans and contributed to his relatable persona.
In recent years, Ryan has balanced his acting career with his business ventures. His films, including "Free Guy" (2021) and "The Adam Project" (2022), showcase his versatility as both a comedic and action star. His continued success in both entertainment and business has solidified his place as a beloved figure in pop culture, admired for his humor, charm, and dedication to his craft.
