Good bye, Cosplay

From 2006 until 2019, I regularly did Fantasy Larping. I stopped this hobby when the pandemic hit and I never returned, because I am a high risk patient and Covid is not over. Playing in a fantasy setting with a FFP2 mask ... well, this is not really immersive. But I missed dressing up in costumes, playing a character. So I started to do a bit of Cosplay.

But I wasn't lucky with that. Here's why, in three parts: 1. Rey from Stars Wars (in 2019) I liked Rey, so I created a closet cosplay. Back then, I was still on Twitter. I posted some photos of the cosplay, with the hashtag "Cosplay is for everyone", because I am a fat person. It didn't take long until trolls found these photos and insulted me. I deleted the photos and never again showed my cosplays there. And then the pandemic came, events got cancelled and I never went to any event with this cosplay.

2. Marvel's Loki (specifically in the Disney+ series) I love Loki. The Norse deity and the Marvel version (and how Tom Hiddleston played him). So I started creating a closet cosplay for the Marvel version. But personally, I didn't like the ending of the Marvel series "Loki" at all. If you liked it, that's fine, you do you. To me, the end was so sad that I lost all enthusiasm about Marvel's Loki. I never cosplayed him at any event.

3. Aziraphale and Crowley (Good Omens, in 2023 - 2024) I loved Good Omens (the series) and created two closet cosplays, including wigs, one for Aziraphale, one for Crowley. I cosplayed both characters at a SFF convention in my city in June 2024 and I was very happy about this. It was the only event where I cosplayed them. Three weeks later, I heard about the allegations against Neil Gaiman. I have written several posts about the allegations in my blog here. For circa two months, I read everything I could find about the allegations and listened to all the podcasts. I believe Neil Gaiman's victims, all of them. And these victims are more important than a fantasy show. I have lost all enthusiasm about "Good Omens". If you still like it, you do you. But I can't get myself to ever cosplay Aziraphale or Crowley again. I have thought about ways to do so and still show my support to Gaiman's victims. But I haven't found a satisfying idea for this.

So, as you can see, I wasn't lucky with Cosplay. And I wonder, if I have yet another idea for a cosplay, what may happen in the future with the respective character, or the film/show or the creators? So I have decided to stop this hobby. Instead, I am going to put my money elsewhere: Since July 2023, I am in the Goth subculture, so I am going to buy Goth clothing and accessoires instead of creating closet cosplays.
