The Bolthole by aideomai, Tepre, and GallaPlacidia

I'm absolutely thrilled to finally share my first fic bind here on Tumblr! I completed this bind back in November, and it introduced me to so many wonderful people.

You can find pictures and detailed explanations of my process under the cut.

This is "The Bolthole" by Aideomai, Tepre, and (formerly) GallaPlacidia on Ao3. The cover design is adapted from "The Little Brother" (1902) by Josiah Flynt. The typeset is my own.

I fell in love with this cover the moment I saw it, and wanted to try to recreate it with book cloth. As a hobbyist book binder, I like to try to revitalize older designs from the public domain. There are so few copies of this book left in the world, so I thought it would be fun to give it new life as the cover of a contemporary story.

The cover is made out of three different colors of book cloth from the Allure and Verona lines. The book cloth and endpapers were bought from Hollander's.

I used my Cameo 4 and a strong tack mat to cut the design out of each color of book cloth. I then assembled the pattern like a puzzle. It was MUCH harder than it sounds! Some of the pieces were incredibly thin and fragile, and they were difficult to keep track of.

For the foiling, I used my Cameo 4 and the We R Memory Keepers fine tip foil quill for everything but the spine, which I did by hand. I foiled immediately after I cut, without removing my mat from the machine. This helped me line everything up. It did not, however, prevent me from sweating bullets as my machine worked.

This method was, frankly, torture, but I'm really glad that I tried it. Now that I've had a nice long break, I'd like to try it again soon. I love running my hands over this book, and the texture of the book cloth feels wonderful under my fingertips. I do, however, have a few words of caution. Do not try this out unless you have book cloth to burn! Here are some pictures of just a few of my failures.

The Cameo 4 is not your friend. Your cut-outs can and will get fucked up for no reason. If the mat isn't sticky enough, or the blade isn't sharp enough, or the fabric doesn't adhere properly, your design could get completely shredded. I strongly recommend that you avoid Verona book cloth, or anything with a paper backing and loose fibers. It was absolute hell to work with. When it wasn't shredded by the machine, it was fraying like crazy. Acrylic coated cloth is the way to go if you want clean lines. And, you know, your sanity intact.

This was my most challenging bind to date, but I learned a lot! Aside from experimenting with book cloth, automated foiling, and my Cameo 4, it was also my first time formatting, printing, and sewing a text block. I'm incredibly grateful for all of the online tutorials and wonderful people who helped me make this bind a reality!

There are guards you equip and can train to protect your village, and they have patrol areas, but the pathing somehow always has all of my guards clustered on the exact opposite side of tge village any time it's attacked. Also, the resource requirements for anything above the most basic builds are prohibitive (at least for the design packs it's loaded with, there may be 'cheaper' builds, but not in this version). And my biggest pet peeve, illness. One of my dudes got influenza and spread it to every single other person, and then when I started healing them, they would be reinfectwd within 5 minutes. I finally got a hospital built to automate rhe healing, and all of them would get healed and then catch it again on their way back to their job. Increasing your population requires building an entire house for every additional person. And for the people staying in the Tavern (basically a long term hotel for your starter villagers), they spend every free moment of time following you around complaining they don't have a house. I really like figuring out how to manage the supply lines to eventually make the village self sustaining, then I can start working on the create mod and learning how to use steam punk stuff. Also, there's oil so I can eventually use compression engines. I'm not sure for what, since I still haven't seen any sign of support for moving items or blocks beyond trains. I would love to have regularly mobile sailing ships. Either fishing boats or pirate vessels to raid other villages would be cool. And as always, I'm having a great time with my friends playing together. The valhelsia team made a great modpack, and minecolonies is very intricate so I can forgive the sometimes poor pathing and finicky building requirements.

well, grants and subsidies to start. plus ample use of public-private partnerships. more jobs training programs. tariffs. inevitably new taxes like vat, lvt, and carbon (though this should be mostly offset by reducing or getting rid of other taxes to keep the tax burden at reasonable levels). probably have to do strategic tolls and fees. and may as well invest in public transport too. all of these things together should increase land values which the aforementioned lvt should capture. utilize ai and robots/automation.

hmm, first off, disclaimer: posts prefixed with "hot take" are intentionally inflammatory, not carefully considered proposals, and are not things which i necessarily actually endorse wholeheartedly (or at all). this particular post was inspired by me stumbling across a reddit post on r/all where a ton of people who as far as i know do not personally know joe jonas and sophie turner were intensely discussing if and why they might be divorcing. like jesus christ, people. you don't know these two, you never will, and you have no reason whatsoever to care even an iota about their lives, except that the Monkey Status Module sitting on top of your limbic system is telling you "ooh! high-status monkey! let us pay attention to them!"

actors, and certain kinds of musicians, for whatever reason seem to come in for this kind of obsessive treatment most of all, second only perhaps to the british royal family. probably because they're intensely recognizable, and often attractive. they serve, i suppose, as a canvas for projecting our own hopes and insecurities. every once in a while i get served a tiktok which alludes to the existence of the people who secretly believe that a) taylor swift is a lesbian, and b) she is carefully sending coded messages about her lesbianism to her die-hard fans through her music. this is objectively insane behavior. just truly a monumental waste of time. the people who spend their time and energy thinking about this sort of thing are the equivalent of sovcits--deranged, if frequently by the grace of god not quite deranged enough to qualify for a clinical diagnosis.

there are celebrities of other categories who 1) tend not to achieve fame until a little bit later in life (and so are less prone to actual exploitation) and b) even when they do so tend not to attract the same kind of obsessive, rabid maniacs. writers rarely make it big before their 30s; even prodigies like christopher paolini don't become objects of obsession, or superstardom. jk rowling became like the first or second person ever to make it to billionaire status off her writing career, but people still don't really give her deference, or obsess about her personal life. politicians are very well known, but frequently held in (IMO) a healthy degree of contempt and suspicion simply by virtue of their profession. you get exceptions like Trump--but they're obviously divisive figures, often as deeply unpopular with the broader public as they are popular with their own core constituency. many smaller or more workaday musicians, who are not the subject of marketing pushes by large labels, but who may still be widely known.

we could imagine a system where all entertainment and celebrity gossip magazines were simply banned, and nobody was allowed to act in TV or film until they were 45. that would have a certain charm to it! it might help revitalize struggling regional theater scenes, as people honed their craft in anticipation of competing for film roles once they came of age. and, of course, it would be great to see child roles played by, like Hugh Jackman walking on his knees. all drama is artifice, after all; what we take as acceptable deviation from reality now (like 20 year olds playing high schoolers in TV shows) is simply a result of convention and habit; we could form new convention and new habits if we really wanted to. personally, i think gary oldman could play any role he set his mind to if we gave him a chance.

but technology offers us a better way. really, we've had the technology since we invented animation, but i suppose there is always a desire to achieve a certain verisimilitude in certain kinds of art. we no longer have to compromise. between AI and sophisticated computer graphics, why not simply abolish those professions that tend to produce figures that (for reasons of marketing or simply a defect in our ape-minds) we cannot be normal about? we can create sui generis faces for each film or TV show. maybe we can demand all pop music stars go about masked like the daft punk duo.

that's no help with the royals or for sports stars, though i think i am pretty much on record as saying both those jobs would, in the best of all possible worlds, be abolished for other reasons anyway.

the thing with the dustups guy is he's too marketable. the other randos with youtube channels about afforestation in the chihuahuan desert is that they're weirdos with issues. i found one who opens with a long talk about how he's taking a complex mix of vitamins that will keep him alive until 100. there's another weird antivaxxer. you know, people with conspiracy-related reasons to want to live out in the middle of west texas.

i mean the antivaxxer keeps making primitive earthwork dams all over the place and then being shocked when it rains and they overtop and completely collapse so i guess he's also in the bucket of "does not know anything about the subject". he wants to make a fully-automated desert farm with drones, b/c he used to be an automation manager. but the dustups guy is like howdy i'm a down-to-earth cowboy man just trying to revitalize this degraded land with folksy grit!! and he's got scenic drone footage and everything is super produced and he's got attractive thumbnails and a mailing list and a site where you can 'buy a membership' to support him. he's like a software developer with absolutely no knowledge of gardening much less farm agriculture.

i will never be over the prickly pear thing. he took a bunch of cuttings and was like, i'll replant these pads to add vegetation b/c unlike everything else, they grow around here. and then he was like. "i just lay them down on their sides on the ground" "i'd try to plant them but the ground is too hard it's impossible" "maybe 10% survive" and it's just like oh my god dude
