The Rt Rev Mariann Edgar Budde, Bishop of Washington, called upon Donald Trump to find compassion and mercy in his conduct as president.
"I ask you to have mercy upon the people in our country who are scared. There are gay, lesbian, transgender children, Democratic, Republican, independent families — some who fear for their lives," the bishop said as Trump sat in the pews, shuffling nervously..
She said that millions of Americans "put their trust in you."
"The people who pick our crops and clean our office buildings, who labor in poultry farms and meatpacking plants, who wash the dishes after we eat in restaurants and work the night shifts in hospitals — they may not be citizens or have the proper documentation, but the vast majority of immigrants are not criminals," she added.
Questioning Trump's claims about migrants, she said that those workers "pay taxes" and are "faithful members" of American churches, mosques, synagogues, and mosques. The children of those migrants "fear their parents are going to be taken away."
"Find compassion," she added, urging him to help vulnerable people fleeing from war zones and persecution.

Note: Rep Mike Collins (R-GA) demands the arrest and imprisonment of the bishop of Washington for calling on Trump to show compassion... He says she should be imprisoned and then deported.
[The Hill]
As the Bishop of that Cathedral, Bishop was literally doing her job.
The Episcopal Church does not have archbishops only a presiding bishop (who is simply first among equals). Equality, at least among white men, was important to the founders of the Anglican branch of the church when this country was young as many of the country’s founders were members of the church. Plus, the church in England was seen as co-oppressors of freedom.
I’m proud to be a part of this denomination. For the most part, it walks the talk.

Trump demands apology, criticizes bishop’s prayer service remarks
President Trump early Wednesday morning slammed the reverend at a National Cathedral prayer service for the inauguration who called on him to have mercy on transgender children and immigrant families.
Trump, in a lengthy post on Truth Social, called Bishop Mariann Edgar Budde’s remarks “nasty” and not smart.
“The so-called Bishop who spoke at the National Prayer Service on Tuesday morning was a Radical Left hard line Trump hater. She brought her church into the World of politics in a very ungracious way. She was nasty in tone, and not compelling or smart,” he said.

The Antithesis of Christ: How MAGA Christianity Distorts Jesus’ Teachings
In a powerful sermon delivered at the National Prayer Service in Washington, D.C., Rev. Mariann Edgar Budde courageously confronted the disconnect between the MAGA movement and the true teachings of Jesus Christ. Her message, which urged President Trump and his followers to show empathy for the vulnerable, exposed the glaring contradictions in the brand of Christianity espoused by the far-right.…

Episcopal Bishop, Rev. Mariann Edgar Budde, publicly called out Trump to his face today at a service at the National Cathedral in Washington, DC. This was some next level Jesus-style calling out the powerful that you rarely see exampled anymore.
“Let me make one final plea, Mr. President. Millions have put their trust in you, and as you told the nation yesterday, you have felt the providential hand of a loving God. In the name of our God, I ask you to have mercy upon the people in our country who are scared now. There are gay, lesbian, and transgender children in Democratic, Republican, and independent families, some who fear for their lives. The people who pick our crops and clean our office buildings, who labor in poultry farms and meatpacking plants, who wash the dishes after we eat in restaurants and work the night shifts in hospitals, they may not be citizens or have the proper documentation, but the vast majority of immigrants are not criminals. They pay taxes and are good neighbors. They are faithful members of our churches and mosques, synagogues, gurdwara, and temples.
I ask you to have mercy, Mr. President, on those in our communities whose children fear their parents will be taken away, and that you help those who are fleeing war zones and persecution in their own lands to find compassion and welcome here. Our God teaches us that we are to be merciful to the stranger, for we were all once strangers in this land. May God grant us the strength and courage to honor the dignity of every human being, to speak the truth to one another in love, and walk humbly with each other and our God, for the good of all people, the good of all people in this nation and the world. Amen.”

Marita Vlachou at HuffPost:
The bishop who drew ire from Donald Trump for calling on him to show “mercy” to the people who are “scared” about him taking office said she won’t apologize for her words, in a new interview with NPR. In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump blasted the Right Rev. Mariann Edgar Budde as “a Radical Left hard line Trump hater.” “She brought her church into the World of politics in a very ungracious way,” he wrote. But in an interview with NPR’s “All Things Considered,” Budde rejected his characterization. “Well, I’m not a Trump hater. I don’t hate the president, and I pray for him,” she said. “I don’t agree with some of his views of the country and the way — the decisions he makes, but I certainly don’t hate him.” “I’m a 65-year-old grandmother, and I am not those things. So I don’t know what to say except you don’t know me, Mr. President. And I don’t think I portrayed myself in that way in the pulpit,” she continued. In her sermon on Tuesday, Budde addressed Trump, who was in attendance, urging him “to have mercy upon the people in our country who are scared now.” “There are gay, lesbian and transgender children in Democratic, Republican and independent families, some who fear for their lives,” she said. “The people who pick our crops and clean our office buildings, who labor in poultry farms and meatpacking plants, who wash the dishes after we eat in restaurants.” “They may not be citizens or have the proper documentation, but the vast majority of immigrants are not criminals,” she added.
Bishop Budde is right to reject crybully Trump’s demands to apologize to him.

Donald Trump signed a slew of executive orders on LGBTQ issues and immigration within hours of being sworn in as president.
Jan. 21, 2025, 1:25 PM MST
By Matt Lavietes and Tara Prindiville
The bishop leading the inaugural prayer service on Tuesday urged President Donald Trump to "have mercy" on his constituents, specifically naming LGBTQ people and immigrants.
The sermon by the Right Rev. Mariann Edgar Budde, the Episcopal bishop of Washington, was part of a larger post-Inauguration Day interfaith ceremony at Washington National Cathedral. Trump was seated in the first row alongside first lady Melania Trump, Vice President JD Vance and second lady Usha Vance during the service, a tradition undertaken by presidents of both parties.
“In the name of our God, I ask you to have mercy upon the people in our country who are scared now,” said Budde, who was looking directly at the president. “There are gay, lesbian and transgender children in Democratic, Republican and independent families. Some who fear for their lives.”
She added: "They may not be citizens or have the proper documentation, but the vast majority of immigrants are not criminals. They pay taxes and are good neighbors. They are faithful members of our churches and mosques, synagogues."

“Here is what we seek: a compassion that can stand in awe at what the poor have to carry rather than stand in judgment at how they carry it.” ― Gregory Boyle, Tattoos on the Heart: The Power of Boundless Compassion
+
“No daylight to separate us.
Only kinship. Inching ourselves closer to creating a community of kinship such that God might recognize it. Soon we imagine, with God, this circle of compassion. Then we imagine no one standing outside of that circle, moving ourselves closer to the margins so that the margins themselves will be erased. We stand there with those whose dignity has been denied. We locate ourselves with the poor and the powerless and the voiceless. At the edges, we join the easily despised and the readily left out. We stand with the demonized so that the demonizing will stop. We situate ourselves right next to the disposable so that the day will come when we stop throwing people away.” ― Gregory Boyle, Tattoos on the Heart: The Power of Boundless Compassion

'Desperate': Pastors, conservatives unleash on Episcopal bishop for 'weaponizing' the pulpit against Trump
The Washington, D.C., pastor who delivered a liberal sermon during a church service attended by President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance is facing fierce backlash from fellow pastors, as well as critics on social media for "weaponizing" the pulpit instead of promoting unity.
