Change and Loss

Expected reading time: 10-11 minutes

"If your otherkinity still serves you, it will never really leave you," is what I used to say - more as a reassurance than a statement of fact. I mean, how could I know for a fact that it was true? I didn't have any experience with losing a kintype. I still don't think I do; not really. And I always saw the idea repeated in the community - one time otherkind, always otherkind.

But I don't believe that's true anymore. I'm still a bison for sure. I've never doubted that. I'm still Ɐwhrayɐ the gnoll and I'm still Ben the shapeshifter… but I'm beginning to accept that those sides of me have changed.

"One time otherkin, always otherkin. If your otherkinity still serves you, it will never really leave you"… but what if that's not true? What if you still benefit from your kintypes, and they disappear regardless? What do you do if you lose a part of yourself, or if a part of yourself becomes unrecognizable to you? How do you keep living when you've lost yourself?

Sometime in 2023 the distress of always having to hide my true self became too much to bear alone. But I'm not a brave person. I think the better solution would've been to just bite the bullet and start expressing myself, but hindsight is 20/20. I've survived 25 years by hiding everything that makes me 'weird', and the idea of leaving my one dependable survival strategy behind was (is) terrifying. I went to a free self-help seminar ("Take control of your life!") but all it taught me is that I need a dependable support network before I can take control of my life. I went to my doctor to try and get a referral for a therapist (it's cheaper than just finding your own therapist). Instead he sent me to a psychiatrist for my 'delusions'. The psychiatrist told me my experiences, worldview, and self-perception were unusual but not harmful - they could only help if my goal was to get rid of my schizotypal traits (traits that weren't even significant enough to warrant a diagnosis). If all I wanted was to learn how to conquer my fears and express my true self, they couldn't help. It took months of visits to get the diagnosis: Traumatized by peer abuse, too poor to afford my own therapy, and too anxious and ADHD to even find a therapist in the first place.

I can't even say I was left at square one. I had started out hopeful. Nearing the end of 2023, I just felt helpless.

At the same time, my studies were drawing to a close. I completed my bachelor's degree in animal science and all it took was a diagnosis of ADHD so I could legally buy amphetamines, a compound-diagnosis of autism so I wouldn't get kicked out when I inevitably misunderstood exam questions and failed final after final, and 5½ years - almost twice the expected time for a bachelor's degree in my country.

It should've been freeing but instead it left me directionless. Helpless and directionless - that's how I entered 2024!

In the past, in the strictly structured day-to-day of school, my kintypes have been a source of comfort. Especially my Ben fictotype, which probably fell into the category of coping mechanism. I awakened in a time of intense stress and retreated to that world whenever my present life got too much. When crowds got me overstimulated or I missed an important deadline or fought with my neighbors or drifted apart from old friends, I thought about all the times Ben!me had gone through similar or worse. I cut off a friend in my present life after finding out he'd abused his ex - but in my other life I'd cut off a friend who tried to murder me, and things still turned out fine. I lived through it. I could live through it again. Every situation had a parallel in my other life.

I still don't know why that method failed me, but eventually it did. It's not that it didn't work, it was more that I suddenly had to put an effort into making it work. As if I'd always been able to enter Narnia and now suddenly I had to personally petition Aslan to let me back in. It started in the fall of 2023 but it wasn't until spring 2024 that I fully realized. Coping had never been an effort before, and the worst part is, I don't even know why it suddenly was.

My fictotype was drifting away, even when it still served me! This wasn't supposed to happen! Had I been lied to?!

I think our community has a lot of survivorship bias. Whichever mailing lists and newsgroups get archived, and whatever snailmail gets published, that's what our history is based on. The people who made archivable geocities sites get to write our story - not the people on closed forums or in private chat groups. People who leave the community don't tend to leave behind pristine essays on their fully archived websites explaining why they left. It does happen, don't get me wrong, but it's rare. And when they do leave behind messages, it's usually some variant of "I still love the community that fostered my awakening, I'm just an adult with responsibilities now and I don't have time for this."

But what about the people who don't love the community? Who 'unawakened'? Who aren't passionate enough to leave behind a final message? Do we ever hear from the otherkind who 'fizzled out' and became human - or at least lost a kintype?

You can understand my panic, right? I considered turning my fictotype into a copinglink, but my ADHD is so debilitating I barely remember to brush my teeth - no way I was gonna remember to do daily reinforcement exercises. Especially frazzled 2024 me (still frazzled as of June but I'm hanging in there!).

I was forced to accept whatever my come.

I'm still Ben, on some level, but I won't say "I'm thankfully still Ben," 'cause is it really that bad to not be Ben? Even if that facet had served me well and could still serve me? $1,000,000 could serve me well, but uselessly pining after it doesn't serve me.

I didn't prepare myself for loss because I really wasn't sure I was gonna lose a part of me - and, in any case, grieving preemptively is a waste of energy if you ask me. Instead a turned to the Bison - not my own bison theriotype, but the archetype of the Bison. When one woowoo solution fails, why not try another?

The Bison has always been a good teacher to me - better than any self-help seminar or psychiatrist. The Bison takes everything in stride. The Bison survives until it can thrive. The Bison ruminates on the present, it doesn't ponder the future. The Bison doesn't grieve or fret unnecessarily. It exists in the now. I exist in the now.

Of course, the chance that anyone reading this works with the Bison spirit is slim, but I think its teachings can help everyone - regardless of spirituality.

When turning to other worlds doesn't aid you, accept it, and turn to the present world. Let your worries pass through you, you can't see clearly when you're pent up with worry. You can't prevent the seasons from turning, all you can do is turn with them. Accept your lack of control, instead of trying to grasp at the uncontrollable. Sometimes change is unexpected, and you may not like it, and it might not even open up new doors for you. Not all change is good. But you cannot prevent every unwanted change, and you have to keep living regardless.

My fictionkinity doesn't have the intensity of my first few years post-awakening, but it also doesn't have the casual reassuredness of decade-old kintypes. It comes and goes, and when it comes it's like a whisper. And one day it might become too quiet for me to notice. One day it might not return.

But I think I can live with that.

I want to join the interACT youth program so badly, when is that available?

Well, you're 100% allowed to join if you so desire! The youth program is simply a combination of our community spaces (Facebook and Discord) and our advocacy program (such as our yearly advocacy cohort). While our advocacy cohort is application and interview-based, the youth program spaces are accessible to intersex youth ages 13 to 29 after simply answering a demographics questionnaire! interACT is focused on empowering intersex youth to advocate for themselves and their communities--whether interpersonally or against systems, in-person or online, and potentially in solidarity with other advocacy movements--so that's the focus of several of the questions. As a 501(c)3 non-profit advocacy organization, we adhere to different guidelines in running our community spaces. However, if that's not to your preferences, our partners at InterConnect have been hosting all-ages intersex online support group meetings, conferences, and regional hangouts for 25 years that I would highly recommend!

If you're curious about some of interACT's recent accomplishments, we have a 2023 annual report (I'm eager for our 2024 report!) and our Instagram account is actively run by our lovely communications director! Announcing Cyclo-Comment Bingo 2024!

Come one, come all!

While the last few races play out in the autumn, the road season is all but over. As the nights grow longer and colder, summer retreats along with autumn. The leaves fall, the wind howls, and everyone in the Cycling RPF fandom begins to look towards the start of the new road season, still months away. But what to do in these long, cold, months, besides watching cyclo-cross and track?

While the Grand Tour Fanwork Classifications shone a light on creators, in autumn we'd like to encourage the fandom to give back. It's the season of the harvest festival, for the Americans and Canadians among us the season of Thanksgiving. And what better way to do that than commenting? Inspired by various comment fests, we'll be holding our own version in order to tide you over.

But wait! There's a twist! Instead of simply loosing the community upon the world, us devious mods have set up a little trick for you. Rather than commenting on whatever crosses your fancy, we will instead be running a Comment Fest Bingo. Running for the seven weeks between American and Canadian Thanksgiving, participants will be able to generate and save their own bingo board, trying to complete a bingo through making comments that allow them to cross off one of those 25 squares, inching ever closer to a line, 3-line, or coveted full house! From our large pool of prompts, seek out old favourites, step outside of your comfort zone or discover something new in your bingo adventure, all while giving attention and recognition to all the hardworking creators in the Cycling RPF community. (Along with maybe earning a prize or two along the way!) Commenting is the lifeblood of fandom, so we're very excited to run this event and hope that people are ready and excited to take on this new challenge!

Wizard101 Power Leveling Guide (Summer 2024)

This post is heavily inspired by the far more well-known Teleportable Dungeons guide on Reddit, so of course credit for the idea and MUCH of the information to the OP there. However, that guide was written in early 2020, and since then we've had a whole new arc, as well as some other changes. This guide aims to correct for those changes.

Mobile Suit Gundam 08th MS Team Episodes 1-11 (October 6th 0079UC up to around 15th November 0079. Starts after 0079 Episode 10 (Garma's death), and finishes sometime after the battle of Odessa during the Zeon Asian Ground Forces retreat)

Mobile Suit Gundam: Requiem for Vengeance (2024), runs from November 6th until around about the end of that week, shortly after Operation Odessa and the evacuation of the Zeon Eastern European and Asian Ground Forces. The timeline is a little sketchy as Yuri Kellerne appears in both this and 08th MS Team, but dies in the latter, but the series definitely ends by at most two days after 8th to 9th November and Operation Odessa in Episode 25 of Mobile Suit Gundam (1979).

Keeping Spirits Bright

Julie and the Phantoms Advent fills 2024! We're back baby! Another year, another 25 days of holiday joy with our favourite ghost band! I hope you enjoy, and remember, engagement is the best present this holiday season!

Day 1: Adventure + PeterPatter <=AO3

When the Pattersons decided to retreat to a cabin in the woods to give Luke the real old fashioned holiday experience, he only had one request-he wanted to bring Reggie with them.

“Oh honey, won’t his family want to spend Christmas with him?” Emily asked. She didn’t know much about the Peters; Reggie never mentioned them much, but surely they wouldn’t let their only son up and leave for the holidays.

“Reggie doesn’t celebrate Christmas,” Luke replied. “He celebrates…Hanka?”

“Channukah?” she corrected with a smile.

“That’s the one!” Luke stated with a snap and a pointed finger. “So his family won’t mind and I think he’d really like to have Christmas for once. Please ma? I won’t even ask for any presents if Reggie can come!”

“No presents? Really?” she asked with an arched eyebrow.

“Well…not many presents,” Luke amended. “Plus I need to get Reg something.”

Emily melted at that-Luke had taken Reggie under his arm since he moved to LA a few months ago, and she loved how devoted the boys were to each other. It also didn’t hurt that Reggie was always so sweet and thankful for every scrap of affection any of them showed him every time he visited. So if Emily could do this for her son, she would.

Thankfully, Linus and Evelynn Peters seemed more than happy to let Reggie go, and Emily ignored the mumbled comments of him not being underfoot. Luke had let out a whoop of joy at the news, enveloping Emily in a big hug, which she treasured, especially since Luke seemed to shirk every touch since hitting double digits.

So the day after school let out, the Pattersons packed up their station wagon, heading down to Silver Lake, then they would make their way north to the little cabin they had rented until January. Where the forecast was calling for a little snow, giving Emily the white Christmas she wanted without subjecting her California boys to a blizzard. She swore one day she would bring them home to Quebec-maybe for Carnivale, they would like that.

“You excited Luke?” Mitch asked as they neared Reggie’s house.

“Yeah!” Luke exclaimed. “Me an’ Reg are gonna make a snowman, and help you chop down a tree, and sing carols!”

Emily and Mitch shared a grin-Luke may be nearing his teen years, but he was always enthusiastic about the holidays. That’s why they were doing this now before he got too old for it or decided both they and Christmas were too lame to even acknowledge.

Their smiles faded though, when they arrived at the little faded yellow house to find Reggie already outside, sitting on his suitcase. All alone, with no one to see him off or even say goodbye to. Even as he lit up, rushing to the car, tossing his luggage in the trunk before claiming his seat next to Luke. “Thanks again for letting me come Mr. & Mrs. P.”

“Of course Reggie, happy to have you,” Mitch said, reaching over to squeeze Emily’s hand. Now more than ever she was determined to give her boys-and that included Reggie now-a great holiday.

They drove on, the boys happily chatting away in the back seat, the radio playing softly, with Emily knitting as the scenery passed by. She had already made Luke and Mitch new stockings, and she was almost done her own. Thank goodness she had brought lots of yarn though, because she was definitely going to be making one for Reggie. They already had things to fill it with, so she just needed to knit it.

By the time they got to the road for the cabin, the boys were asleep in the back, and Emily was flagging herself. They had stopped for supper at a small diner hours earlier, so they only had to unpack the car when they got in before bed.

Luke of course, was up with the sun, waking Reggie with him in the process since they were sharing a bed. “We should go out, have some adventures before ma and pop get up,” he said quietly.

Reggie gave him a bleary smile, the both of them invigorated by the fresh cool air. “We should look for reindeer!” he exclaimed.

“Why?”

“Well Santa has to store them somewhere with room to run around before Christmas, why not here?”

Luke had to keep his face from moving-since Reggie had never done Christmas, apparently no one had ever told him the truth about Santa either. Luke had known for a year or two, and while he was a little sad the world was a less magical place, he had come to terms with it. His folks had explained it to him, and even offered to still do Santa presents for him, but he figured he was too old for that. Maybe he could change the tags though-just to let Reggie keep the magic alive a little longer. Then he’d tell him the truth once they were home.

But he could erase the joy in Reggie’s heart-not yet anyway. “Yeah, let’s go see if we can find Rudolph!”

So they scurried through the forest, upsetting dirt and the small bit of frost there. Pretending they were explorers, discovering unclaimed land, on the hunt for the fabled North Pole.

Of course there were no reindeer to be found, but they were having too much fun to care, collecting pine cones, spotting the odd bird or creature who hadn’t hidden away to hibernate. Making up songs as they explored, only heading back when they heard Luke’s mom call out for breakfast.

“I guess Santa brought the reindeer back to the North Pole already, Reg,” Luke said.

Reggie deflated for a moment then shrugged. “It was a long shot anyways. I bet they’re in like the Yukon during the off season anyways-less travel time.”

“You’re totally right,” Luke said, then tapped him on the shoulder. “Tag, you’re it!”

“No fair!” Reggie giggled, chasing after him, all thought of reindeer forgotten.

Well until he opened his stocking on Christmas morning and found a messily scrawled song about two explorers finding the North Pole. And even if Luke told him there was no Santa, Reggie still had that song, and all those memories to keep the magic of the holidays alive for the rest of his life. A song he shared with his and Luke’s kids many years later as they went on their own reindeer hunt.

Third Times a Charm – Early “January Effect” Likely to Push Russell 2000 to New ATHs

It’s no secret that the Russell 2000 small cap index has not closed at a new all-time high (ATH) in over three years. Russell 2000’s first attempt was on November 11 when it traded up to 2441.72 intra-day. That attempt failed and Russell 2000 retreated. The second attempt started on November 25 and lasted until December 2 with multiple intra-day highs exceeding the old closing ATH of 2442.74 from November 8, 2021. Will a third attempt next week finally see Russell 2000 at a new ATH?

Looking at the seasonal pattern chart above, updated through the markets close on December 6, Russell 2000 does appear to be following its historical pattern and trend this year eerily closely. Since late October small-cap outperformance in November and December this year (orange line) closely following the pattern observed from July 1979 to June 2024. We suspect that once tax-loss selling pressure abates, likely sometime later next week, that Russell 2000 will finally break out and close at a new ATH. Should this occur, small-cap outperformance could persist into early March next year.

Here... We... Go...

Hi all,

Well, so far, 2024 has sucked for me... but anyway...

I've been feeling pretty out of sorts mentally, and depending on where my head is at, I've been bouncing back and forth between Fics and my Wes and Cole novel.

I am going on a writing retreat May 4-12th... so... expect some major movement...

I wanted to provide a few updates on where I am with my Fics and other works.

Sideways:

Published updates here have been slower than I wanted or anticipated. This has nothing to do with the story, as I have this outlined for Arcs 6-10... Yes, up to Arc 10.

My personal life has gotten in the way a lot over the last few months and has just eaten up my time to write.

Now, Arc 6 will lead right into Arc 7 and 7 into 8. You will want to throw some stuff at me for some of the wtf moments and having to wait between arcs... but it's all coming. Anyone new to the series has had the benefit of reading five fully finished-out arcs that took me about a year to write. Have some patience with me. It will be worth it.

Arc 6, Into The Unknown, has multiple chapters drafted. I just need to clean up some edits from my beta, and they will be posted. May is going to be a big month for this arc.

This is a pivotal point in the series. It spans Chapters 37-48, making it the longest arc so far. This installment will delve into the Seals' backstory, their connection with Buck and Eddie, and much more. It’s a substantial piece of the puzzle that you won't want to miss.

This one does have some heavy moments...

This does end with a cliffhanger... But I promise, it's not our boys directly you are left wondering about...

Arc 7—Strong—Eddie will need his friends and family like never before. This is a heavy Diaz family arc. The outline is eight Chapters.

Arc 8 Genesis—This is the big one. It all comes together here, and it is the part I am most excited to write. It is also the longest, with an outline of 16 chapters. You will find out more about Genesis in Arc 6.

Simplicius the Thinker has an important post up giving evidence that the Israel war against the Palestinians and the US operations in the Middle East are buckling, to the degree that US-friendly sources and even officials are acknowledging setbacks and stresses. Early on, Simplicius describes how the ne plus ultra of neocon strategy, the Institute for Study of War, is reporting that Israel has lost ground to Hamas in North Gaza, an area it maintained it had so firmly under its control that it could pull out ground forces.

The Cradle confirms Simplicius’ overall assessment in Israel loses control of its borders:

For the first time in its 76-year history, Israel’s entire security calculations have been turned upside down: the occupation state is today grappling with buffer zones inside Israel. In past wars, it was Tel Aviv that established these “security zones” inside enemy territory — advancing Israel’s strategic geography, evacuating Arab populations near their state border areas, and fortifying its own borders…. Today, Israel is horrified to find itself retreating from direct confrontation lines with its arch-enemies in Gaza and Lebanon. The formidable capabilities of the resistance now include drones, rockets, targeted projectiles, tunnels, and spanking new shock tactics, casting doubt on the feasibility of Israeli settlers remaining safe in any of Israel’s border perimeters.

There is a big sour note in Simplicius’ otherwise informative piece, in that he follows the US official trope that “Iran” is driving the multi-front military operations against Israel. As others on Simplicius’ beat have pointed out, he is very good on military analysis but weak on politics. Hamas launched October 7 without giving Iran a head’s up. The Houthis and Hezbollah get support from Iran and no doubt share intel, but they are independent actors.

The Axis of Resistance, as some like to call it, has been increasing the intensity of its pressure on Israel as the slaughter in Gaza continues, and importantly, they have likely already detected plenty of evidence of Israeli poor performance, which Simplicius describes in detail as it is becoming more visible and widespread. Experts abroad were inferring poor Israel performance merely from knowledge and press coverage. Very early on after the Hamas attack, Scott Ritter, who had considerable experience in Israel in the 1990s, depicted the IDF as a third-rate army, proficient at ops like breaking the arms of Palestinian teenagers. He also called out the bombing of Gaza as a major mistake, assuming the objective was to get Hamas, as opposed to exterminating Gazans. All that rubble, in combination with the vast Hamas tunnel network, results in a much more defender-favorable environment. John Mearsheimer and Alastair Crooke pointed out the inability of Israel to point to any successes, such as freeing hostages or more than isolated kills of the Hamas leadership. Crooke also said the Hebrew press would report on a high (by Israeli standards) IDF death count in Gaza, only to have those stories quickly yanked by the censors.

Israel, or at least the rabid right wingers running its show, may be running up against the conflict between how they have presented the war to the world and their citizens versus what, based on a cold look at their actions, is the real intent. The scale and sheer destructiveness of the Gaza assault make clear that Israel wanted to clear Gaza, not of Hamas but of Gazans (and the persistent demonization of all Gazans as in cahoots with Hamas is part of a deeply offensive rationalization).

Israel, clearly naively, assumed it could push the Gazans into Egypt. When Egypt resisted fiercely, the next Israel move was to increase the punishment of the Gaza population, based at best the idea that it would increase pressure on Arab states to relent and accept Palestinians, and at worse, regarding extermination as a perfectly acceptable way to get rid of the Gazans. So a plan for ethnic cleansing on a massive scale has become genocide. In case you harbor any doubts about the real war aims:

But the cost to Israel and now the US is spiraling out of control. In Israel, citizens have a good sense that the IDF losses are high, yet an end to the war is nowhere in sight. Families with hostages are successfully creating an uproar over priorities, demanding a cease-fire to secure their return, while Netanyahu and the hardliners insist that Hamas must be defeated first, and the release of the hostages will follow. 1

Another source of political and economic pressure is that Israel is now housing nearly 90,000 citizens evacuated from the Lebanon border. Those settlers insist that there must be no Lebanese visible from their homes for them to be willing to return. That would require taken Southern Lebanon up to the Litani River, as in dispossessing Lebanese families for the psychological comfort of these border dwellers. Netanyahu has promised to take that territory if Lebanon won’t surrender it, which is clearly not in the cards. But quite a few experts opine that if Israel were to try to seize southern Lebanon, that the odds favor Hezbollah occupying Israel up to Galilee.

The Cradle describes how the northern Israel border situation is worse than generally depicted in Western media:

The Israeli Defense Ministry, which pledged a swift and decisive war to safeguard its settlers over 100 days ago, is now actively devising plans to shelter approximately 100,000 people along the northern border, deeper inside its territory. This measure could involve evacuating settlements that may come under fire during any future military escalation with Hezbollah in Lebanon. This situation implies three critical outcomes: any immediate return of settlers remains unlikely, additional evacuations are anticipated, and numerous Israeli families – in the interim – may establish permanent settlements in other, more secure locations at a much further distance from the borders with southern Lebanon and the Gaza envelope. Preliminary reports from settler councils in the north assessed settler “displacement” to be around 70,000 in the initial weeks of the conflict. Subsequent reports, however, suggest a vastly higher figure of approximately 230,000.

Recall we already have the US’ supposedly vaunted Navy being unable to provide for the safety of seaborne commerce, and the US now in an attempt to restore its manhood, making illegal and ineffective missile strikes on Yemen. And recall the US is supposed to be a sea and air power!

In the meantime, most non-Chinese and Russian cargo ships are avoiding the Red Sea. While the rise in shipping costs is not all that bad by historical standards, the US looks and is powerless. And the Houthis are succeeding in their main aim, of choking sea transport in and out of Israel.

But bear in mind one reason the US can faff around is that we don’t much bear the cost of longer transit times and supply chain uncertainty. It’s Europe. And the fallout has started:

Now to Simplicius’ on-the-ground sightings, first from Gaza:

As we now know, Israel has withdrawn many of its brigades from the north, citing ‘rest and rotation’ when in reality it appears to be ‘reconstitution’, as the brigades took major attritional losses. Now in the wake of that, the latest bombshell reports state that resistance fighters have re-infiltrated the entire north, leaving the map looking like that of below:

I myself was skeptical—could Israel really have abandoned the entire north after “claiming” to have captured it?

But here’s the double bombshell: even ISW admitted it:

After more examples of Israel doing badly in Gaza, Simplicius adds:

Recall that just last month Kirby admitted that Hamas had not been attrited at all, and an Israeli reserve colonel gave a tearful account of piled up IDF bodies which seemed to imply that they are taking far heavier losses than they’re admitting to.

Later in the piece, Simplicius turns to how US bases in Syria and Iraq are under attack. Oddly he does not mention that the US is in Syria illegally, stealing Syrian oil on a big scale and the Iraqis told us to leave but we refused. Suddenly our position is looking tenuous just when Israel (or at least Netanyahu) is acting like escalating is a great idea to make sure we having to get deeply involved and come to their aid. Again from his post:

And quelle surprise, Simplicius found a story in Al-Monitor that suddenly had the US wanting our buddies the Kurds to “partner” with our former super enemy Assad….which looked like a plan to cut and run, which was confirmed by Foreign Policy headlining that he Pentagon is planning to exit Syria. From its account:

And with such a complex regional crisis playing out, it should not come as a surprise that the Biden administration is reconsidering its military priorities in the region. It should be cause for significant concern, however, that this could involve a full withdrawal of U.S. troops from Syria. While no definitive decision has been made to leave, four sources within the Defense and State departments said the White House is no longer invested in sustaining a mission that it perceives as unnecessary. Active internal discussions are now underway to determine how and when a withdrawal may take place.

The Daily Sabah reports Türkiye is somewhat skeptical of the story, which it depicts as a rumor, but also lays out some implications if true.

And to round out this remarkable picture, Simplicius includes two stories, one from Reuters, the other from CNN, that the US is negotiating its departure from Iraq.

Simplicius points out:

The US claims these are long-planned talks and have nothing to do with the recent attacks, but that is clearly not the case. The Reuters article above provides one key line: You see, the US previously had preconditions for talks of ending its occupation; one of the conditions being that Iran-backed Iraqi groups first had to stop bombing US bases. But now, the US has apparently dropped this significant precondition, as per the Reuters report. That tells us that US is making concessions out of desperation.

So the US looks to be engaging in a full bore retreat. We don’t begin to have enough weapons, particularly after having depleted our and our allies’ stocks in Ukraine, to wage much of a war, even before getting to that we also can’t land or protect anywhere near enough ground forces and keep them supplied given how the Houthis, and if needed, Hezbollah, have plenty of cheap drones, and the Hezbollah and the Iranians have higher tech, more powerful, longer range precision missiles too.

Given that this is utterly embarrassing, and in an election year to boot, the last thing the US needs is further attention being drawn to its debilities by Israel escalating in a way that necessitates our trying to come to its rescue.

So a nefarious thought: Norman Finkelstein, Ray McGovern, Larry Johnson, and no doubt others, have assumed that the US would join Israel in providing as much pressure as could be mustered on the International Court of Justice judges, and their home countries, to secure a ruling against “provisional measures” to stop what sure looks like genocide. But what if the US has come to realize that both it and Israel are hopelessly overextended, and the best way to limit the fallout is to get Israel that it is risking losing even the US, and not just over time? What if the US has only been going through the motions, recognizing that the press coverage of a South Africa win on some provision measures (South Africa is extremely unlikely to get the court to call for Israel to stop military operations unilaterally) might be loud enough to finally penetrate Israel’s self-delusion and force it to start figuring out how to back out of its Gaza/West Bank overreach?

Now as we all know in reality, no one in the Biden Administration has the sense or even the self preservation instincts that it needs to create some daylight between the US and Israel. In keeping, the only idea for a way out from both the US and UN isabsolute non-starter of a two-state solution (please see our recent post for details). If someone had a more realistic de-escalatory path, perhaps the horrible hostilities could go from a full boil to a simmer. But as a friend saids, if you want a happy ending, watch a Disney movie.

1 Alastair Crooke recounted that a row in the cabinet the weekend before last included that 80 aid trucks a day were getting in, a level deemed to be too high to stave out Hamas. By way of contrast, before October 7, about 500 trucks of supplies went into Gaza daily. And in a remarkable show of chutzpah, one of the lawyers presenting for Israel at the International Court of Justice on January 12 claimed that supplies had increased over the last two weeks to 109 trucks…as if that were a good number.

back to Nobody noticed, nobody cared? as Tristan tries to be a good person around Elijah who is still struggling.

It was fascinating to watch someone experience Aurora’s sickness fresh, his sister had started trying to hide it before he had truly discovered the deepness and they had been so young a millennia later it was hard to remember the small bits Aurora had learned to hide from even.

It being Elijah Mikaelson who experienced it, added a level, he knew how rigid and controlled his sire was, how reserved he was even before he built centuries of walls and yet Elijah fell under this sickness of his sisters mind the same way. Was affected even more, Aurora had learned to handle it with human emotions first while Elijah had no warning before he experienced it heightened with vampire emotions.

It was a vicious cycle where Elijah's own paranoid fear of a manic episode and mistrust of his mind would trigger one.

He had moved Elijah from the retreat he had set up for Aurora to a secured set of rooms at his main base of operations to better monitor as well as set a select few he trusted to watch over and assist him in new treatments. At least without the centuries of failed experiments Elijah was willing to accept and try them where Aurora, now refused.

Most of the time.

“You don’t understand,” Elijah told him as he tried to talk him into taking his newest attempt at a drug that work work on a vampire without simply knocking them out, the long braid he kept Aurora’s hair in swung as he twisted around. “it’s like buzzing under my skin, I I I need-” Elijah stuttered as his hand shook while attempting to straighten the journals on his desk. “I I can't even catch my own thoughts, they're too fast.”

He was in the unique place to be able to describe the difference between a mind free of Aurora illness and one with it but that, while interesting, did little to help them manage it.

The rooms had no widows and cameras view covering every inch, it was a prison cell but better decorated and so, something he would never force his sister to endure if he had a better choice, Elijah on the other hand he enjoyed having under lock and key even with their truce.

Elijah was aware of why he and his sister hated it and owned up to it even assisting as long as his family remained unharmed and Aurora it seemed had grown attached enough that everyone was getting something out of this deal.

A breathless laugh followed and Tristan was pulled from his thoughts as he was pushed against a wall as Elijah smirked up at him before kissing him. He kissed back for a moment before moving his hand to push her back slightly, keeping hold of her arms.

Elijah cocked his head to the side looking at him with clear confusion and Tristan had to blink, when Elijah spoke it was easier to see the difference between them but sometimes he struggled to see pass Aurora’s body to Elijah.

“No.” he said firmly, making him frown, Tristan was relieved Elijah’s annoyed expression was somehow different from Aurora’s despite it being her face.

“You know you’ll enjoy it.” Elijah purred

“And you’ll feel worse afterwards” he replied, stepping forward and moving them both towards the bed.

Since they had gotten news of Kol Mikaelsons’ death Elijah's low episodes had managed to outdo any of Aurora's. Normally when the switch from high to low happened he would need to reassure her that she wasn't an annoyance, not a waste of his time, as if anything came before her to him.

With Elijah he has to deal with pure self-loathing, dragging Elijah from a boiling shower, pulling his hand away from where they had clawed at his arms. Part of it could be Elijah pre-existing issues made worse by their relationship, no matter how much they were moving towards a mutual respect, nothing would wipe away a past of betrayal and hatred completely, so he would do what he had to, to manage that part of it.

“I swear I won’t.” Elijah argued, attempting to kiss him again.

Tristan pushed him backward onto the bed and as he blinked at the sudden change in position, he used his vampire speed to cuff both his wrists.

“Tristan please!” the words came out in Aurora’s voice, Elijah’s accent vanished under the pleading that made Tristan smothered a wince, at the high and the lows of the episodes Elijah and Aurora where nearly identical, how much of his sister had been lost to this thing if it could reduce of the most stubborn willed man Tristan had met to the same breathless desperation.

“It’s for your own good.” he echoed the words he had used to try to soothe his sister for centuries.

Like Aurora, they failed Elijah the same.

“I’ll worship you, you know you want-” Elijah applied until he noticed Tristan pull the syring from his breast pocket, “stop don’t,” Elijah started, he was familiar with the sedative they had created free Aurora to help her sleep away the worse of her episodes.

Tristan hadn’t let Aurora’s begging make him hesitate in centuries, he wouldn’t let Elijah’s as he injected it into his neck.

“Trista-” Elijah’s voice trailed off as his struggles faded.

“Hush,” he told him as he started to move Elijah’s now lax body into a more comfortable position, “I have you.”

“‘Lease.” Elijah muttered looking at him with barely open eyes, as Tristan careful removed strands of long red hair from his face.

“You know you’ll be thankful when you wake up.” he reminded him, ‘possibly’ he thought.

“Don’t leave me.” Elijah whispered, before he lost his fight to remain awake.

Tristan hummed as he sat on the bed beside him, that was something different from their first relationship.

When he was human and had managed to work his way into Elijah's close layer of trust, before he had admittedly ruined it by using and attempting to manipulate him, Elijah had shared his fear of failing his family, his struggle for control and numerous other things but not abandonment.
