got any thoughts abt kizami’s arc with yuka? i’d love to see some analysis on that portion of his character.

I think it is one of the most important parts of his character that is just soo misunderstood by both people who are not sympathetic to him and fans of his. a lot of people outright ignore his dynamic with yuka to make him more palatable of a character, which I understand why but I also don't agree with it. their dynamic is just so integral to understanding how kizami perceives himself.

yuka is kizami's ideal of a little sister, what a little sister represents to kizami is someone that is weaker and pitiable-- like he was when he was a child. I mentioned before on this blog how yuuya's own sense of masculinity was heavily influenced by how kouki treated him as a young child, how weak yuuya felt in those moments trying to fight back against his older brother. to be the younger sibling is to be helpless, to be the older sibling is to be the one in power. and that's something that kizami projects onto yuka, all the while presenting that projection also as a twisted form of redemption. and I am really sympathetic to that part of his character.

kizami views himself as someone incapable of human emotion and connection and it is again (ALWAYS!!!) related to how he was treated by his own siblings. his siblings may have cried over him and said that they love him, but how could he believe that when they would hit and yell at him at the same time? he was always aware of this juxtaposition and it only served to make him feel like he wasn't being accepted by his own family and therefore never could be by anyone.

at this line, he specifically says "ANIKI is not coming" in japanese, which is an informal term for an older brother and what yuuya refers to kouki with. I would really like to think he's subconsciously referencing kouki's own neglect when saying satoshi won't rescue yuka.

kizami simply wished his siblings had understood and took care of him. he wished he had his own younger sibling to look after to prove he would have been a better sibling than kouki and haruna ever were.

and of course, it gets really weird.

referencing a previous post I made about morishige and the whole gore fetishist/necro thing and how I find it kind of pointless to argue whether those labels are true or not, that is exactly how I feel with kizami in regards to his dynamic with yuka.

I hate when people reduce his role in the games to being some sort of lolicon, but at the same time I don't think the sexualization of yuka that is present in their dynamic invalidates reading it as some sort of reclamation of his own trauma. yes, it is obviously kedwin inserting his own fetish into the story, but to me the line of separation between the character and the creator is really arbitrary especially in fandom spaces. if anything, I wish this storyline really truly addressed how his obsession only objectified and stripped away yuka's identity for the sake of his own agenda.

instead they just make jokes later on about how he has little sister eroge games on his computer at home and it cheapens the meaning of what could be a honest dive into his psyche as a sick damaged teenager and I hate it. and I don't blame anyone else who does.

but on paper, the darkening twists the thoughts and feelings of a person in the worst way possible. so this desire to have power over someone else because he never had it when he was younger, to grow up in the shadows of his older siblings and be in their position for once, of course it would also just become another display of sadism from him. in a vacuum, it makes him an uncomfortable and nasty villain which also means it does work.

I just think if yuka herself actually had the agency or personality or design to be antithetical to what kizami wanted, those themes would have been much more obvious. that kizami IS just another victim of heavenly host who is misguidedly trying to find a way to redeem himself and to finally feel like an actual human.

Okay, since there is no end to any 'protect Porsha from Jimmy' content or anti-JimmyxDiane memes in sight, and no one else cares, it's once again up to me to take matters of the Saluki with hair and glasses who can't enjoy entertainment into my own hands.

Illumination wants her to remain antisocial? Then we might as well have a restraining order against every animal in the Sing universe.

If this kind of order was written, even forged, I would be in full support of it. Better not to have the dog who represents me end up with a wolf I severely hate or with another woman who hates every boy on the planet.

This may be done in a meta story one day. Oh, and just in case...

I Can't, I Have Rehearsal

Well you thought it'd be a great excuse to get to know him better, but the guy won't even talk to you! After a mishap in the science lab, you come to find out that Park Sunghoon, the cold-hearted prince of EN High, isn't in fact rude, he's just afraid of women.

Log 5: Monday - May 13th, 2024

“So why do you need to beat up Riki again?”

Sunoo rolls his eyes for the umpteenth time that morning. “Because I have to scare that damn Belift guy off.” 

Jaeyun blinks. “Okay, but that doesn’t explain why you need to beat up Riki.” 

“We’re not actually beating me up. He’s just gonna pretend.” Riki adds. “We’re gonna fake a fight and make it seem like Sunoo’s the leader of a gang. That way the recruiter gets scared and Sunoo never has to see him again.” 

“And who thought of this?” Sunghoon asks, skeptical.

“Me, duh!” Riki stands tall and proud as he says this, only to be slapped up the head.

“Ow! What the fuck was that for?” Riki growls. “For creating the most dumbfuck shit plan I’ve ever heard.” Jongseong sighs.

“You’ll be regretting that when my plan works and I save Sunoo.” Riki grumbles to himself. “Okay stop,” Sunoo swats Jongseong away. “Riki and I agreed to do this, we’ll be fine, Jongseong.”

“Anything he’s involved in already has me worried.” Jongseong throws a finger towards the youngest. “Hey! It’ll be fine, Riki A and C are gonna be there too, they’re gonna be Sunoo’s lackeys.” Riki rolls his eyes.

“Whatever, just don’t get caught up in anything, Jungwon and I have to go to election rehearsal after school today and I’m not gonna leave if something goes wrong.”

“Ugh, don’t remind me, I still have to write my speech.” Jungwon covers his face in shame.

Though he planned to drop out, Jungwon and everyone else soon found out that dropping out wasn’t allowed once you were nominated, as there was only one other person running for president, some second year named Byun Euijoo.

So now Jungwon was forced to actually run, though he showed absolutely no enthusiasm.

“You don’t even care though, don’t you want to lose?” Heeseung brings up. Jungwon nods as they all walk down the street. “Yeah but I also don’t want to go up there and make a fool of myself.”

“Don’t worry, we’re not actually gonna fight, Konon said we could borrow her makeup, we’ll make some fake bruises.” Riki assures the other boy.

“Did she actually say that or did you just steal her makeup without her knowing?” Sunghoon questions, though he already knew the answer. 

“Does it matter? What matters is we save our friend. Which none of you have done anything by the way, only me!” Riki marches forward, leading the seven inside the school building this morning.

Sunghoon slows down and grabs Sunoo’s arm. “Why are you going along with this? You could just call the police, you know?” 

“Oh I already did, I have a restraining order on that guy,” Sunoo agrees as they walk to Sunoo’s classroom. “But this is my revenge on Riki for his stupid April Fool’s prank. I told him to help me or I’ll tell Konon about the time he slept over at my house and he cried that night because he couldn’t sleep without her or Misora.” He grumbles. 

(Sunoo found out that Riki’s prank for him was making him audition for the newest “act” the theater club was performing: Spongebob Squarepants The Musical. Poor Sunoo had shown up with bright yellow face paint and suspenders while everyone else was auditioning for Les Miserables.)

Sunghoon shrugs it off and walks down the hall to his classroom. 

“Hi Sunghoon!” A random girl smiles and waves as he passes her. “Hi,” He gives her a small smile back, and pretends to not notice her squeal of excitement to her friends. 

Just last week it’d come to his attention that Sunghoon was in fact not hated in his entire school, but actually quite popular.

Well in reality, his friends told him.

“You were so scared of girls you never noticed more than half of them are in love with you,” Jaeyun laughs. “Yeah, and now that you can talk to them without running away, we thought we’d tell you.” Sunoo adds.

While he was initially a bit upset his friends would withhold such information from him, Sunghoon’s anger soon morphed into hope: does that mean you are also in love with him? That thought brought butterflies to his stomach immediately.

As he enters his classroom, he’s ambushed by a few female classmates.

“Good morning Sunghoon! I got these cookies for you-” 

“Yeah well I bought you some juice, and I wrote you this letter-”

“Move aside! Hi Sunghoon! I hope you like this muffin, I made it myself-”

“Ahem.” 

Someone behind him clears their throat, and he spins around. 

“Excuse me, you’re blocking the door,” You glare right past him and towards the other girls. Everyone moves out of the way, and you walk towards your cubby. “Excuse me,” Sunghoon mumbles, pushing the girls to the side to follow you.

“Hey,” He beams at you, opening his cubby to your left. Before you can greet him, a pile of letters and presents fall out. “Oh shit,” He scrambles to pick them up, stuffing them back in. 

You watch him as he struggles, giggling a little. “Need help?” You ask as you close the door to your cubby. “Nope! No, I’m good!” He tries to play it cool, finally shutting his door and leaning against it awkwardly. 

“Okay,” You eye him up and down before smirking and leaving for your desk. Sunghoon follows you like a puppy.

As you get your supplies out for the day, Sunghoon sits and watches patiently. Recently, he’s noticed something was off with you. You seem to be keeping your distance more often than not, and it’s more noticeable when around others. 

At first Sunghoon thought it was just his imagination, but then he started to notice the weird looks your friends would give you whenever he joined in the conversation.

The only time he felt like you were yourself was whenever you two had a calligraphy club together, away from the crowds. Your eyes seemed to sparkle whenever you two were alone. It didn’t help that he now had a massive crush on you, seeing you shine like that.

“So!” Sunghoon clears his throat. “How was your weekend? Do anything fun?” He tries his best to create small talk, hoping to remove the awkward air.

“Oh yeah,” You nod, glancing at him. “My family and I visited my grandmother, I’ll have to show you the-”

“Hey Sunghoon!” Another classmate calls from across the room. Sunghoon can’t remember her name, but she grins at him like they’ve known each other their whole lives. “Did you have a good weekend? I was wondering if you were free after school today, we could go to a cafe? Jaeyun and Yuri are coming too.”

The girl gestures to his best friend and another girl conversing by their desks. With the way this girl smiles, Sunghoon has a feeling her intentions aren’t just to go eat pastries after class. And using his best friend as bait wasn’t going to bite either. 

“I have club today, maybe another time.” He tries to apologize. The girl pouts. “What about after? I can wait-”

“No thanks, like I said, maybe later.” He waves her off, turning back to you, feeling embarrassed. Just weeks ago he would have cried if he knew a girl was even staring at him, now he was busy rejecting the hoards who got in his way. 

You on the other hand, don’t look happy at all, facing the book on your desk and shoulders tense. “Sorry, what were you saying-”

The bell suddenly rings, and everyone scrambles back into their seats as Ms. Hong enters the class to start homeroom.

“It’s nothing.” You mumble, sighing as your eyes dull. You don’t even look in Sunghoon’s direction for the rest of the day.

Sunghoon frowns as he stirs his spoon around his soup, moping.

“If you’re not gonna eat your rice, can I have it?” Heeseung asks with a full mouth as he points to the pile of untouched rice on Sunghoon’s tray. Silently, he slides it over to the senior, who looks delighted to have a second portion.

“Where is everyone?” Sunghoon finally asks, realizing 15 minutes had passed and the only people sitting at their table were him and Heeseung. 

“Huh? Oh, Jongseong is helping Jungwon write his speech in the library I think. Riki and Sunoo said they’re practicing their fake fight in the small gym with the other Rikis. I don’t know where Jaeyun is though, I thought you’d know.” Heeseung fills him in.

Sunghoon’s frown deepens. Heeseung suddenly clears his throat, taking big gulps of his milk.

“I don’t mean to pry, but are you okay? You’ve been kind of killing my appetite with your weird mood.” Heeseung asks. Sunghoon eyes the empty tray of food, as well as Sunghoon’s previously full tray dwindling down to zero with every bite the senior took. Sunghoon was pretty sure Heeseung was eating just fine.

But when he looked up at Heeseung, for some odd reason his mouth began to speak faster than his brain could comprehend.

“I think the girl I like hates me.” Sunghoon confesses.

Heeseung blinks, shocked. “Why do you think that? I thought Y/n was in love with you.” 

The sudden mention of your name has Sunghoon’s stomach doing a flip. He sits up straight, looking around to see if anyone had overheard them. “D-Don’t say that out loud!” He shushes the other boy.

“What? That you like Y/n-” One glare and Heeseung shuts up. 

Sunghoon sighs, rubbing his face, now stressed out. “Sorry.” Heeseung mutters. “But can I say something? I know we aren’t close or anything,” 

He peaks through his fingers, making eye contact with Heeseung’s big brown eyes. He can feel the sincerity through his gaze.

So he sits up again and nods, wondering what advice someone like Heeseung could ever give him.

Heeseung fiddles with his spoon, looking down at his tray. “I think you should try being more confident. You’ve got everything I’ve always wanted: you’re good-looking, humble, well-liked by everyone.”

“And I know you’ve been working hard on your social anxiety, but maybe you can show your newfound confidence by confessing your feelings to her. Why let yourself get in the way? You’ve gotten so far now, why not go a little further?”

Heeseung’s words click inside Sunghoon’s head. It’s true, he’s at an all-time high for the first time in his 17 years of living. He doesn’t know if he would have ever been able to conquer his fears without you. 

Sunghoon has always sabotaged himself, continuously mentally feeding himself the worst case scenarios, but you showed him how to break those walls down. You’ve been happier than himself at his growth.

Even if it killed him, he needed to tell you.

Sunghoon suddenly stands up from his seat, scrambling out the table. 

“Where are you going?!” Heeseung asks worriedly. But instead of answering, Sunghoon smiles fondly at his friend, running off. “Thanks Heeseung!” He shouts.

“Does this mean I can have the rest of your food?!” Heeseung calls out after him, only to get no answer.

And that’s how Sunghoon found himself running through the entire school, searching for you. 

He’s gasping for air as he checks the time on his watch. He had 30 more minutes before lunch ended, yet you were nowhere to be found.

While he knew EN-High was a giant school, with many twists and turns in the hallways, he also knew you wouldn’t just drop face off the earth in the middle of the school day.

Winded, he lands in an empty hall, leaning against the wall as he catches his breath. Looking around, Sunghoon realizes he’s right by the old library, where you two held calligraphy club. There’s no way, right? He thinks as he quietly enters.

The tables are empty, the room feels stiff, as if no one was there but him. It reminds him of the day he discovered it, where you two had your first real conversation. 

Silently Sunghoon walks around, his hopes of finding you falling. Though he knew he could just wait until later today, he felt as if he couldn’t keep this information to himself, and he swore to himself that he’d find the courage to confess-

Sunghoon stops in his step, head whipping around. He swore he heard a whisper. He stills, hoping to hear it again.

"...swhswhshwshwshwsh..."

There it was again! A whisper! Slowly Sunghoon makes his way down the aisles of books, getting closer and closer to the noise.

“-just say something. What’s the worst that can happen?” Sunghoon recognizes that voice, he peeks through a bookcase, and suddenly he connects the dots.

“I can’t, I couldn’t bear risking our friendship,” You sigh, looking distraught as you talk to your best friend Kai. The both of you are speaking low. Sunghoon tiptoes closer.

“Well sooner or later you’re going to have to say something,” Kai crosses his arms. You shake your head. “How can I?” You ask.

“Well you like him right? Don’t you think he deserves to know?”

Hold up. You like someone?! 

The pep talk Heeseung had given Sunghoon earlier begins to turn into slush as he starts to worry. Who could you possibly have a crush on? He hoped it was him of course, but he could never be so sure-

“Yeah,” You hum. “But you know Taehyun’s-”

“Ignore it, just tell him.” Kai opposes, just as Sunghoon’s heart shatters into a million pieces. He was no longer listening to the conversation.

Taehyun was one of your best friends. Someone you’ve known for years and have done everything with. To top it off, you’ve been helping him more frequently for the elections, spending more time together. It made sense why you’d like him. 

But no matter the truth, hearing it didn’t hurt any less, and Sunghoon had to refrain from bolting out of there and causing a scene. 

Except he does. Because of his distress, he doesn’t realize he’s bumped into the bookshelf behind him, causing one of the novels to fall and land loudly on the ground.

The slam of the book hitting the carpet is loud inside the silent library. You and Kai have stopped your conversation, and Sunghoon is regretting that he hadn’t run out when he first thought of it.

Swiftly, you round the aisle, finding Sunghoon looking at you with wide eyes full of terror. “Sunghoon?!” You gasp, looking just as horrified.

Out of habit, he spins around, facing away from you as he mentally prays you don’t see him if he stands still.

“Sunghoon, I can still see you, you know?” You call him out. Fearing for his life, as well as trying to tame a broken heart, he rigidly turns back around to you. “Hi. Fancy seeing you here,” he waves like a robot.

Kai tries to hide a giggle, covering his mouth. “I’m gonna go, see you later Y/n,” He nudges past you, giving you a playful wink as he leaves. 

You sigh, hiding your face as you mutter something to yourself.

“So I’m guessing you heard.” You finally say. Sunghoon feels his stomach drop as he nods.

Your cheeks are bright red, you can’t look at him. “I’m sor-

“No.” Sunghoon interrupts. You’re shocked, and so is he, but no matter what happens, he was going to tell you his feelings, even if you rejected him. 

“I mean- Uh, Can I say something first?” He stumbles over his words, realizing he probably came off too strong. You nod slowly, brows furrowed. 

Taking a deep breath, Sunghoon bites the inside of his gum. 

“Y/n, do you remember the first time we had calligraphy club together? When we were walking home that day, that was the first time I’ve ever really looked at a girl and not felt scared. You smiled at me.” Sunghoon begins sloppily. 

“I’m not really good at speaking, I’m better at writing, but I want to tell you how much you've helped me these past few months. I don’t even think I’d be able to talk to you right now if you hadn’t encouraged me. I’m really grateful for you.”

“I don’t know when I started to feel this way, but I do know one thing, I like you. More than a friend.” Sunghoon gulps as you gasp quietly. 

“I like you so much, if it meant I’d have to sacrifice everything I’ve worked hard for to disappear just to be with you, I would do it. If I have to embarrass myself in front of our class again, I will. Heck, I’ll even fight Taehyun- I mean I know you have a crush on him and that he’s the captain of the boxing club, but I just like you so much I don’t mind getting my ass kicked for you.” He begins to ramble, not noticing your confusion.

“Wait,” You hold a hand up to stop him. “Say that last part again.” 

Sunghoon freezes. “I like you so much I would push Jongseong in front of a bus if you told me to?”

“What? No! Before that!” You look at him bewildered.

“I’ll fight Taehyun for you because you like him?” He repeats and you suddenly slap your hand on your forehead. 

“Sunghoon,” You grumble, approaching him. Even when you’re glaring up at him, you make his heart race. “I don’t like Taehyun.”

Sunghoon blanks.

“Huh?”

You sigh, again, and grimace. “I don’t like Taehyun. I like you, idiot.”

Now he’s really confused. 

“But you and Kai were-” 

“You obviously heard wrong. I thought you heard the whole thing, which is why I was freaking out because Kai was trying to convince me to confess to you.” You poke his chest with your index finger, looking away shyly. 

“Him and Taehyun have been pushing me to say something for weeks.” You admit. “I’ve just been stalling since elections are so close.” 

Wait. So you like him back?!!

Sunghoon is malfunctioning as you wait for him to speak. 

“Hold on!” He suddenly yells, grabbing you by the shoulders. “Then why have you been ignoring me these past two weeks? You barely even talk to me!” He points out.

You blush again, scratching your head. “I-I wasn’t doing it on purpose,” You mumble. 

“It’s just every time we try to talk, someone interrupts. It’s been getting annoying. Especially the other girls-” You suddenly stop talking, glaring at yourself. Sunghoon cracks.

“You’re jealous? That I’m getting attention from other girls? Oh this is gold, I never took you as the possessive type.” He chuckles. “No I’m not! Stop laughing!” You argue, though your red face proves you wrong. 

As you try to make up some other reason why, Sunghoon can only smile. This is the you he likes, one so full of life and passion. You stop talking, words trailing off as you realize Sunghoon’s been watching you with a lovesick smile.

“D-Don’t look at me like that.” You turn away, but Sunghoon stops you, engulfing you in a hug. He feels you reciprocate, squeezing him tightly.

He can feel how fast your heart is beating. He wonders if you can feel his.

“Two months ago you would have rather eaten a bucket of bugs instead of hug me.” You mutter into his chest after a long silence.

“Way to ruin the mood.” He groans, cringing at his own past self (and how right you are). You two laugh, and as the bell rings, you both walk back to class together. 

“Does this mean we’re dating now?” Sunghoon asks you, ears pink. “I would hope so.” You joke. 

“Good, I’m telling everyone you’re my girlfriend now.” He grins to himself. “Well, as your girlfriend, I’d like it if you held my hand.” You tease.

“And as your boyfriend, I’d like for you to give me a minute, my palms are sweaty,” He wipes his hands on his pants as you laugh, before taking your hand in his.

The two of you don’t say anything more as you walk down the hall towards your shared classroom. Hands swaying together, Sunghoon only has one thing on his mind.

You two were a perfect match.

Bonus:

“Can you believe I’m the first person in my friend group to get a girlfriend?” 

You look at your boyfriend, astonished. “Seriously? I swear I thought at least Jongseong had a girlfriend,” Sunghoon shrugs as you two walk home together.

It’s only been a few hours since he’s become your boyfriend but he couldn’t be happier. He loved holding your hand, it fits so snugly into his own. Knowing that you were all his, and he was all yours now was the best feeling in the world. 

He hadn’t shut up about it since, and now the entire student body of EN-High knew you two were a couple. 

(Sunghoon marched you two up to the front of the class and announced to everyone you were dating. He claims he did this so that the other girls wouldn’t approach him so much anymore so you wouldn’t have to be jealous, but a part of you suspects he just wanted to brag. Either way, you were embarrassed.)

“Hey,” You suddenly slow down. “What’s up?” He asks, looking at you concerned. You’re not paying attention to him, looking forward. “Uh, isn’t that Riki and Sunoo?” You point.

Sunghoon follows your view, and sure enough he finds himself with a front view of Sunoo beating the shit out of Riki. 

“Y-You-Agk! You said you were going to pretend!” Riki whines as he lays on the street, shielding himself as Sunoo stomps on him.

“Gotta make it look believable!” Sunoo grins. Behind him, Riki C is recording while Riki A laughs.

“Should we stop them?” You ask, looking concerned. Sunghoon contemplates the idea, but in the end shakes his head. 

“Nah, they’ve got it covered.” He steers you away, assuring you his friend will make it out healthy and alive. 

“Come on, don't get distracted, we still have our first date to go on.”

NOTE: Some episodes that focus on Squidward and SpongeBob's relationship are not counted either because of there being other characters directly involved too* (like "Naughty Nautical Neighbors"), Squidward is only shown to dislike/strongly hate SpongeBob or their relationship is not painted in a very positive light (like "Restraining SpongeBob" or "Employee of the Month"), their relationship is painted in a pretty neutral light/there's nothing special to note there** (like "Just One Bite"), the episode is focused mainly on Squidward (like "Squid's Day Off"), or because of the episode just being bad/universally disliked or there being a bunch of Squidward torture (like "Smoothe Jazz In Bikini Bottom" or "Abandon Twits"). I made this list to focus on their friendship and for people who like the ship, so only episodes that actively do that a positive are going to be listed, even if they just have one notable scene.

I will also provide descriptions for those who don't just want to watch the episodes for themselves, so that means there will be spoilers ahead. The descriptions of the episodes will be focused on Squidward (with a few exceptions), as it's far, far, far more apparent in the show how much love and care comes from SpongeBob's side of the relationship. What I want to highlight here is that there's a lot of love and care coming from Squidward's side too, despite how less it's shown.

*One episode I was thinking about including, season 11's "Mustard O' Mine," was removed because it technically falls under this category. However, I will label it before we begin as an honorable mention, as it's a Krusty Krab related adventure starring SpongeBob, Squidward, and Patrick where Squidward gets along very, very well with both of his neighbors and is shown to be incredibly happy for a good chunk of the episode's time. It is very good by season 11's standards.

**Another episode I was thinking about including, season 13's "Food PBBFT! Truck," was removed because it technically falls under this category, as I surprisingly couldn't find anything special to note about it during my rewatch. I wanted to label it as another honorable mention though, since it's one of those "SpongeBob and Squidward Krusty Krab adventures," one of my favorite episode genres. It's like "SpongeBob in RandomLand," but more tame and taking place in Rock Bottom. It is pretty good by season 13's standards.

I will try my best as someone who's shipped SpongeBob and Squidward for years to remain unbiased, only stating the facts of what happens in each episode and none of my personal opinions or interpretations, other than an emoji to let you know which ones are my favorites. However, if you would like to know more about what I think of any particular episode on this list, please let me know and I will be very, very happy to talk about it.

1. ⭐️🍔🩵💕 Pizza Delivery - Season 1

As the title suggests, Squidward is thrust into a pizza delivery with SpongeBob, during which two quickly get lost, and he makes known how adamant he is of disliking the entire situation. However, in the end, when he watches a customer act terribly mean to SpongeBob for forgetting a drink he never even ordered, Squidward is immediately shown to be worried about him. Upon seeing him break, fall to the ground, and sob, Squidward becomes furious, and pays the customer his karma for what he had driven SpongeBob to by slamming his pizza in his face.

2. ⭐️🩵❣️ SB-129 - Season 1

Though this episode happened because Squidward was trying to get away from SpongeBob, in the end, when there's no way for Squidward to get back home, he realizes just how much he actually misses him. Saying so out loud is what ultimately does bring him back home, where he then tells SpongeBob (and Patrick) they don't know how happy he is to see them.

3. ⭐️🩵❣️ Fools In April - Season 1

Though Squidward pulled a horrible prank on SpongeBob in this episode that drove him to tears, he soon begins to feel very bad about it, saying he never meant to make SpongeBob cry. However, he has difficulty telling him he's sorry, but his conscience and sheer amount of guilt eventually drive him to run to SpongeBob's house and shout through the door, saying three times he's sorry and that he never meant to hurt him, but in fact likes him, likes living next door, and likes hearing his foghorn alarm in the morning and his high pitched giggling at night.

4. ⭐️🩵💕 Dying For Pie - Season 2

Once Squidward is told by Mr. Krabs that SpongeBob is going to die by the end of the day, he immediately becomes very scared and worried. He begins to freak out and cry, and tells Krabs that he's going to "make SpongeBob's final hours the best he's ever had", and that there's gonna be so much love "he's gonna drown in it". He then asks SpongeBob what the most fun thing he can think of is and spends the entire day with him doing everything on his "friendship list," a list he keeps of the fun things he likes to do. It is incredibly obvious just how much Squidward genuinely doesn't want SpongeBob to die, and when he finally thinks he has, he immediately begins to sob. He shows nothing but care for him almost the entire episode.

5. ⭐️ Squidville - Season 2

Though Squidward finally moves out of Conch Street in this episode, he's quickly shown to find his new life in Tentacle Acres boring and repetitive. SpongeBob is still on his mind, something as simple as the sound of a reef blower making Squidward think he's there. He realizes he prefers the life on Conch Street with someone like SpongeBob, as different from him he may be, rather than the life in Tentacle Acres with other octopi just like him. In the end, he becomes the "SpongeBob" of Tentacle Acres before ultimately moving back home by the next episode.

6. ⭐️🩵💕 Christmas Who? - Season 2

Despite how jerky Squidward acts towards SpongeBob in this special, once SpongeBob tells him he made something for him so he "wouldn't be left out when Santa came", his whole attitude changes. Once he opens the gift and calls it "the greatest gift he has ever gotten,” Squidward realizes how just awful he'd been acting. He realizes all SpongeBob had wanted was to spread a little joy, and despite still not liking the holiday, Squidward then dresses up as Santa to convince SpongeBob his wish really did come true. He tells him that he was the one who brought Christmas to Bikini Bottom, causing him to become so happy he faints. Squidward then keeps this Santa charade up for the rest of the episode, "giving away all his stuff just so SpongeBob wouldn't be sad." The episode ends with Squidward playing the clarinet SpongeBob had made for him.

7. ⭐️🍔💕 Graveyard Shift - Season 2

SpongeBob and Squidward are together the entire episode and get along fairly well, with Squidward teasing SpongeBob and telling him a fake story to scare him during the night shift, letting him know it was a joke when he got too scared. Later on when they believe the story had become real, Squidward holds on to SpongeBob and tells him he's "always sort of liked him."

8. ⭐️🍔💕 Krab Borg - Season 3

SpongeBob and Squidward get along very well in this episode. When SpongeBob tells Squidward he believes Mr. Krabs is a robot, Squidward, although not really believing him, keeps up conversation with him and goes along with his attempts to prove to him that Krabs is a robot. After Squidward is finally convinced, he works together with SpongeBob to interrogate who they think is Robot Krabs and get him to tell them what he did with the Real Krabs. After SpongeBob tells Squidward that the robots in the scary movie he watched that led to all this ended up being in the characters' imagination, he makes up a lie to excuse himself and leaves Squidward behind with an angry Krabs, and he doesn't even get mad at him for doing so.

9. ⭐️❣️ Born Again Krabs - Season 3

After Mr. Krabs breaks his deal with the Flying Dutchman, he angrily shows up at the Krusty Krab. After SpongeBob sticks up for him, the Flying Dutchman tells Krabs that he'll give him another chance if he helps him settle a bet. He then makes him choose between SpongeBob and all the money he has in his pocket- which ends up being 62 cents- and Krabs immediately chooses the money. After the Flying Dutchman takes SpongeBob to Davy Jones's locker, Squidward is angry at Krabs for letting it happen and stands up for SpongeBob. He tells Krabs he should be ashamed of himself for what he had done, and makes him feel remorse for his actions.

10. ⭐️💕 The Two Faces of Squidward - Season 5

SpongeBob and Squidward get along very, very well the whole episode. Though Squidward is initially angry at SpongeBob for hitting him with a door and landing him in the hospital, once he realizes he has become handsome, he leaves the hospital with SpongeBob and hangs out with him for the rest of the day. Squidward is smiling the entire time, not once finding SpongeBob's presence annoying or getting angry at him. The next day, when Squidward realizes the Bikini Bottomites adore him too much, he runs to SpongeBob's house to get away from them and ask him for help.

11. ❣️ Keep Bikini Bottom Beautiful - Season 7

When SpongeBob offers to help Squidward with his community service, he cleans up every single piece of trash in town for him. Squidward is shown to be very shocked and grateful and tells SpongeBob he "hates him a little less now," to which SpongeBob tears up at and tells him it was a "beautiful thing to say". Even after Squidward finds out what he had done with all the trash, in the end, when he sees it had caused Squilliam's statue to melt, he thanks SpongeBob a third time.

12. 🩵❣️ Sponge-Cano! - Season 7

After SpongeBob sings a song to Squidward all about being grateful for the life he is living, Squidward tells him that "being his neighbor leaves him with nothing to be grateful for." He soon tells him he doesn't want his help ever again, and SpongeBob obeys his wishes. However, as the episode nears its end and Squidward is about to fall into a volcano and SpongeBob is the only one who can help him out, he lets him know that he does appreciate his friendship and he is grateful, even quoting his song and saying "I am grateful for the life I am living, who knows how long I will have it?" and reminding him that he learned that from him. After SpongeBob pulls Squidward to safety, he tells him he always knew he felt that way and thanks him for opening up to them.

13. Love That Squid - Season 7

This episode is all about Squidward crushing on a sophisticated female octopus named Squilvia. SpongeBob offers to help him when he has difficulty asking her out, and he lists to Squilvia all the reasons why one should want to date Squidward, concluding with the fact that he knows "anyone who is lucky enough to go on a romantical date with him would get to experience things on a whole 'nother and very special level". After this gets Squilvia to agree to go on a date with Squidward, SpongeBob puts on a wig and a dress and takes Squidward on a "practice date" to prepare him for his real one. Squidward goes along with this, and stays fairly calm throughout the whole date. Though he does get angry at SpongeBob at the end, when he realizes Squilvia had overheard his outburst and finds him dreamy because of it, his anger immediately fades and he gushes to SpongeBob about it, leaving him happy for him.

14. Are You Happy Now? - Season 8

SpongeBob acts nothing but nice, caring, calm, and patient towards Squidward in this episode, more so than he has in any other. Concerned after Squidward tells him he doesn't have a happiest memory, the two cry together before SpongeBob offers to help him create one, which Squidward accepts. With each try, something goes wrong the second Squidward begins to feel happy that instantly crushes his mood, but nothing that happens is SpongeBob's fault in any way. When the two return to Conch Street, Squidward concludes that he will never have a happiest memory and retreats into his house for two weeks. Not once during those two weeks does SpongeBob invade Squidward's personal space or try to check up on him like he would in any other situation. He lets him have that time to himself because he understands he needs to leave him alone, and only tries to get a hold of him once he becomes concerned and fears the worst.

15. 💕 Hello Bikini Bottom! - Season 8

In this special, SpongeBob and Squidward go on tour with Mr. Krabs as their cheap manager and Patrick as their dimwitted roadie. Though there are a lot of things in this episode that don't necessarily go Squidward's way and he was shown to complain a lot, he got along fairly well with SpongeBob almost the entire time. It was evident in his face how happy he was during his first gig when he was duetting with him in the supermarket. More and more things begin to go wrong on their tour, however, and after their tour bus drives off a cliff suffering a flat tire with no spares available, Squidward finally decides he's had enough and begins to walk back home to Bikini Bottom. Saddened after his failed attempts at getting him to stay, SpongeBob hops up onto the top of the bus with his ukulele and begins singing a song directed at Squidward with a self-explanatory title of "Never Give Up." About 40 seconds in, the song turns into a duet between the two of them, during which Squidward decides to turn around and head back to SpongeBob. The song ends with the two of them playing their instruments together, and comes to a close after Squidward joins SpongeBob on the top of the tour bus. Squidward is pleasantly surprised at the way their duet sounded, telling SpongeBob "that was actually kind of good", before the two raise their hands to high five.

16. 🍔 The Sewers of Bikini Bottom - Season 9

SpongeBob and Squidward get along pretty well basically right from the start of the episode. Almost immediately, they begin to have a sort of childlike fun together flushing random stuff down the toilet in the Krusty Krab's bathroom, smiling wide and laughing. When they accidentally flush Mr. Krabs' safe containing the secret formula, however, they begin to freak out and Squidward tells SpongeBob to go retrieve it. After he steps into the toilet and flushes himself, Squidward realizes the severity of what he had done, and tells himself that flushing SpongeBob down the toilet was "despicable, even for him," and then flushes himself to go after him. As the two of them begin to make their way through the sewers, they continue to get along well, and Squidward goes along with every little thing that happens without question, remaining fairly chill about his situation right up to the end of the episode.

17. ❣️ The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water

Whenever SpongeBob and Squidward are together in this movie, they get along pretty well. After SpongeBob turns them all into superheroes, Squidward loves how buff he becomes, and is very upset to lose all that muscle when they return home to Bikini Bottom. Back there, however, SpongeBob tells him not to be sad and that he left him a little surprise under his shirt. After Squidward lifts his shirt to reveal rock hard abs, he smiles wide and playfully punches SpongeBob on the shoulder, telling him he's "okay in his book."

18. Out of the Picture - Season 10

SpongeBob is the only one in this episode to show genuine interest in and love of Squidward's art, both convincing Mr. Krabs to hold Squidward's art show at his restaurant and buying one of his paintings because "he loves it". Despite the things Mr. Krabs puts Squidward through in this episode, he doesn't catch on to the fact that Krabs is trying to get him killed and remains pretty chill about it all. That is, until Krabs gives up and just starts chasing him with a mallet, during which SpongeBob is on Squidward's side and is determined to keep him safe no matter what. All in all, the two get along very well the entire episode.

19. 🍔 The Check-Up - Season 11

In this episode, SpongeBob and Squidward work together to give Mr. Krabs his physical without his knowledge because of his fear of check-ups. While working together, the two get along well, and Squidward never really gets mad at SpongeBob at any point in the episode.

20. 💕 Squid Noir - Season 11

SpongeBob and Squidward become hard- boiled detectives in this episode, getting along fairly well the entire time. They work together, side by side the whole episode, to solve the mystery of who stole Squidward's clarinet after it goes missing.

21. 🍔 Bottle Burglars - Season 11

SpongeBob and Squidward get along pretty well the entire episode. After they accidentally throw away the secret formula and Plankton finds it, they work together to sneak into the Chum Bucket to steal it back. Though they fail, Squidward goes basically the entire episode without complaining or getting mad at SpongeBob, simply just working with him to accomplish what they need to.

22. 🍔 Sanitation Insanity - Season 11

After a trash problem at the Krusty Krab, Mr. Krabs is sentenced to pick up all of the trash around Bikini Bottom. Instead of doing so himself, he orders SpongeBob and Squidward to do it for him. Though Squidward makes it known that he doesn't want to do that job, he gets along well with SpongeBob the entire time, simply going along with everything that comes his way.

23. 🩵❣️ Appointment TV - Season 11

In this episode, SpongeBob is in a rush to get home after a long day at work to watch a never before seen episode of Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy that is airing on TV that night. However, he is constantly stopped by people asking for his help, and by the time he finally gets home, he has missed the airing and finds that his VCR had gone haywire, causing things to burst into flames and rendering him unable to watch the episode. He begins to cry loudly and says his life now has no meaning, and all of his friends- including Squidward- immediately begin to feel guilty for taking advantage of him and his kindness. They then work together to create a live performance of the episode for him, Squidward reprising his role of Dr. Negative from the season 10 episode "Mermaid Pants," and SpongeBob, in tears by the time the show is over, tells them he "loved the love they showed him."

24. 🩵❣️ Pineapple RV - Season 12

Although Squidward is mad with SpongeBob (and Patrick) almost the entire episode, near the end when he leaves them in the woods and starts to drive back home without them, he immediately begins to worry about their safety. Quickly, he turns around and drives back to frantically search for them, only to be met with the sounds of their screams from inside of a nearby cave. He then runs into the cave, delivering a karate chop to one of the sea bears inside- despite the fact that he is terrified of them, shown in the season 3 episode "The Camping Episode"- and shouts "Don't you dare eat those morons!"

25. 🍔 SpongeBob In RandomLand - Season 12

Despite how many weird and random things happen to SpongeBob and Squidward in this episode, Squidward goes along with every single thing like they're common occurrences, barely ever complaining and simply just working with SpongeBob to accomplish what they're in RandomLand to do. The two get along well the entire adventure.

26. Pat Hearts Squid - Season 12

Though this episode is focused on Squidward and Patrick's relationship, when Squidward is enraged after Patrick becomes "a better Squidward," SpongeBob is on his next door neighbor's side. He gives him good advice on how to deal with his situation, Squidward is very grateful (showing so by picking SpongeBob up and air-kissing him), and he gladly hangs out with SpongeBob as he follows his advice.

27. 🍔💕 Bubble Bass's Tab - Season 12

In this episode, Mr. Krabs sends SpongeBob and Squidward to Bubble Bass's house to collect his tab after he refuses to pay it. Squidward is the most determined to complete this task, starting off by kicking down the door to his house- which SpongeBob calls "masculine," and Squidward briefly gets flustered at. Once they're inside, Bubble Bass tells them he'll pay the money he owes if they play a board game called the Three Deadly Challenges with him. SpongeBob, who loves the game, immediately agrees, but Squidward doesn't want to go along with it, questioning why SpongeBob is giving Bubble Bass the upper hand while he's the one that owes them money. He gives in, however, when he sees how much SpongeBob really wants to play. He then plays alongside him in a life size version of the Three Deadly Challenges, going along with each one and eventually actually getting really into it with the help of SpongeBob's imagination, defeating Bubble Bass at last. The episode ends back at the Krusty Krab with SpongeBob and Squidward happily dancing the tango together.

28. 🩵💕❣️ The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run

After Mr. Krabs, Plankton, Sandy, and Squidward find out that SpongeBob and Patrick are going to be executed in the Lost City of Atlantic City, they rush over to save them. Even though Squidward says he's just going to see Kelpy G, he says his piece to Poseidon and his audience to try and convince them to save SpongeBob's life when they arrive. He says that even though he can't stand him, he loves him. Though he calls him annoying, he also calls him sweet and nice. Finally, he concludes by calling him his friend, and saying that he doesn't deserve to die. This brings the audience to tears and makes SpongeBob incredibly happy.

29. Squidferatu - Season 13

After SpongeBob finds out that Squidward has been getting Nosferatu's mail for years, he lets him know he needs to deliver it to him and Squidward tells him to come along. Once they finally arrive at Nosferatu's castle, Slappy tells them that they need to spend the night due to "inclement weather." However, the two soon believe that Nosferatu is trying to attack them, and they run through the castle, working together to figure out how to stay safe. They get along pretty well the entire episode.

30. Mandatory Music - Season 13

In this episode, Squidward lands himself in a court ordered music class for his poor clarinet playing. SpongeBob ends up being in the class as well, wanting to practice playing his nose, and nearing the end of the episode, Squidward has shown no improvement and his clarinet is forcibly destroyed. SpongeBob comforts him when he is crying, offering him a tissue, and once he blows his nose, it is found to create trumpet noises. SpongeBob starts cheering him on, telling him he's "finally found his instrument." After Squidward is declared the "most improved student in the class", he smiles, and the episode transitions to him giving a public performance with his nose playing. SpongeBob continues to cheer him on the loudest, and the episode ends with Squidward wiping a tear from his eye and happily continuing on playing.

31. ❣️ Swimming Fools - Season 13

Though Squidward was mad at and rude to SpongeBob at a couple points in this episode, near the end he calms down and becomes soft and apologetic. He comes clean to SpongeBob about using his pool without his permission, admitting to him how jealous he was of it. SpongeBob then comforts a crying Squidward and lets him know that they're "best neighbors", and that he can use his pool "any time, day or night". Squidward then smiles and thanks him.

Steven Universe - Steven with a Reader Who Loves Musicals

I feel like Steven would be SOOO into musicals

But he wouldn't realize it until he met you

He loves Disney movies and other movies with unique/good soundtracks, and when he says this to you (probably pretty early on in your knowing each other), you suggest he watch a musical with you

Ofc he says yes, but at first he's a little wary

He's never watched a real musical before; just movies with a little music

He's completely enamored by the end of the first song

You ask him what he thinks when the movie is over, and you grin to yourself when you see the stars in his eyes

He immediately asks if there are more movies "like that one"

Cue you showing him all your favorite musicals!!

You'll have to restrain yourself though; both of you are way too excited and you don't even notice that it's suddenly 3AM

You agree to just watch one every day from then on; which you were doing anyway, but Steven wanted to participate

This becomes a bit of a ritual for you guys; but it only lasts for about a week :(

Steven is a busy guy, and you've got your own things going on too

But you vow to meet up at least once a week for a musical movie night :)

The first three or so hours of these nights are spent watching the film, and then you'll spend more hours gushing about it

And ofc you memorize all the soundtracks and scream the lyrics on road trips

You guys make references to each other all the time, both in lyrical and non-lyrical forms

I don't know much about musicals,, but I just KNOW that Steven ADORES the SpongeBob musical

You guys buy each other merch of your favorite musicals, too

You probably have one or two matching items, like keychains or smth

Sometimes when you hang out you just blast musical soundtracks, belting out the lyrics and dancing until your faces are red and you're panting on the floor

Musicals are such an important part of your relationship

For Steven, they're this magical little corner of the world that you revealed to him

For you, they're everything; and it warms your heart to know that Steven loves them just as much as you :)

And if a performance is happening nearby, you can bet you're getting tickets ASAP

Maybe even for multiple nights

You'll go out to ice cream after and gush, just like you do after your more casual musical nights :)

Solaire Clan Headcanons Part 2 (Ft Tank, Quinn, and Adam)

I felt bad so I made headcanons that turned out to be extra long (i think?)..enjoy..or don’t

- Bright Eyes cheated off of Fred on their final exam in high school and actually got a higher score than him

- Pre-turned Lovely could run as fast as a newborn vamp

- If William steps on an insect, whether it’s a roach or a ladybug, he’ll apologize profusely

- Vincent has tried to learn Spanish, it didn’t go well

- Sam can one-hand a mechanical bull

- Tank sleeps atrociously. They kick and talk in their sleep, and take up the blankets. Sam is lucky he doesn’t need to sleep.

- Adam can do the spiderman kiss

- Alexis’ favorite DC character is Raven 

- Tank has set a small shop on fire when they were with Quinn, but made sure nobody was inside first

- William is a LIGHTWEIGHT.

- Vincent has considered having an Onlyfans

- When Quinn was first turned, he didn’t like the thought of drinking human blood, so he’d take it from tiny animals before caving in and taking it from people

- This is why he called Bright Eyes “Little Mouse”

- (Pre-Sam situation) Vincent used to have slicked back hair before Alexis showed him how much of a douche he looked like

- Lovely genuinely laughs at “Try not to Laugh” videos on YouTube

- Tank can only win at Uno if they hide the majority of their cards without anyone noticing. If Sam isn’t playing, he helps them hide the cards

- William refuses to get a pet, he’s scared to outlive it

- When Adam was human, he had a habit to crack his neck. Once, he cracked his neck and it damaged the bone, so he had to go to the hospital. When he got released, he cracked his neck again

- Fred is scared to crack his back and fingers

- Lovely ADORES Rouge from Sonic the Hedgehog

- Alexis wears fur coats exclusively at the summit thing

- William uses a cane. He doesn’t need it, but he likes looking fancy

- Vincent has only listened to one Mitski song, it’s up to you what song that is

- Bright Eyes watches Hamilton like their life depends on it

- Sam is scared of Twitter

- Lovely was okay with being a vampire, until they learned that they lost majority of their electro powers, then they cried for a while when they thought about it

- Vincent stares at fire, he finds it endearing

- Tank tried stealing a snake from a zoo, Sam had to physically restrain them

- Fred has been around Bright Eyes so much that he can rap both of Lafayette’s verses in “Guns and Ships” on 2x speed

- Quinn is dyslexic

- Tank dresses as a vampire for Halloween, Sam also dresses as a vampire because he likes the idea of matching couples, much to Tank’s dismay (They want him to dress as a werewolf)

- Lovely cries when watching the video of the raccoon that put their cotton candy in a puddle and had it dissolve

- Adam bites ice cream

- Alexis knows the total mass of the sun, she doesn’t know how, she just…does

- William has put the clan on Family Feud

- Fred hasn’t used Netflix since 2019

- When Vincent was first turned, he thought he had to sleep upside down

- Lovely has nightmares during October about being locked in a basement as a human. They have no idea what it means, and have spoken to Vincent and their therapist about it, no one knows what it means

- Fred and Bright Eyes are those friends that are only friends because they’ve known each other for so long

- Lovely has dragged Vincent by the tie during the Shaw Pack Solstice, and he followed like a puppy

- Sam prefers red velvet cake

- Adam believes Spongebob should’ve ended after the first movie

- When William was first turned, he bit his tongue SO much it fell off constantly

- Lovely and William have tea time on Tuesdays

I watch a LOT of YouTube videos of people watching Wicked for the first time, and here are some commonalities I love.

Crying. I love it when they cry. Wicked is the new Queen Charlotte, as far as a thing I get to watch people cry at.

EVERYONE apparently knows about whatever thing happened with Ariana Grande and SpongeBob/Boq?? I hadn't heard a word about it, but almost every video, as soon as Boq appears they say something about some relationship drama.

A good amount of them go into it not knowing that Elphaba is going to be the good guy. There's a lot of "Wait, Glinda/Ariana is actually being really terrible," and "I'm on the witch's side!" This always happens before The Wizard and I; the specific moment where people say they love Elphaba is often when she corrects Glinda's "I could care less" comment.

A lot of people call her Alphabet. Which tells me that a lot of people don't use subtitles.

Everyone loves "The Wizard and I". It's often the first song people really like, in the movie.

I have yet to see anyone remember or observe that Nessa, as Elphaba's sister, must be the Wicked Witch of the East, and all that implies. Which is great; I hope they go into Part 2 still not knowing.

Everyone thinks the love triangle with Fiyero is going to cause the falling out between Elphaba and Glinda. It's delightful, because I get to go, "Oh no, it's so much deeper than that..."

A lot of people recognize "Popular" and are surprised to. They've heard it, didn't know it was from Wicked, and get very excited when it comes up in the movie.

EVERYONE recognizes Idina Menzel as Elsa. I have seen one person recognize Kristen Chenoweth from Descendants, which is frankly what I would recognize her from, too, if I weren't into Broadway.

A surprising amount of people not only haven't seen the Wizard of Oz (I haven't seen a lot of stuff, so it's fine), but also haven't learned that the Wizard isn't really a Wizard just from pop cultural osmosis. There are those who are surprised and disappointed by this revelation (and a non-zero amount who make it the movie's problem? For undercutting the scary animatronic with human Jeff Goldblum?).

Some people thought Glinda was about to go with Elphaba, before the guards restrained her.

can't quite tell when casa tidmouth is set but given how much work has to be done online these days, who do you think would be tech literate v tech phobic? I can see thomas trolling on twitter and james endlessly posting on insta while gordon can barely open his emails and gets furious when anyone brings this up (edward has no idea either but he's willing to ask and learn. and he loves cat memes.)

casa tidmouth is set in the summer of 1999! though their fashion sense and architecture are more leaning to the 60s and 70s due to gold dust shenanigans. there are computers ofc so the cast use the internet

the younger ones are the most tech literate, like thomas and percy. if modern websites were around during the 90s thomas would be trolling people on twitter. he loves seeing people seethe. especially gordon. his opponent would give him well thought out replies and thomas would just reply with a stupid reaction image or “not reading all of that”. he tried doing the same on a subreddit only to get jumped there

percy likes browsing youtube! and blogging about his life on various social medias! he posts pictures of the railway and his friends from time to time. “been getting into yoghurt lately” “does anyone remember that show about talking tugboats” percy doesn’t have a large following but his internet circle likes him because he’s nice and positive. also he and thomas love spongebob youtube poops so so much it pisses gordon off

james would post instagram selfies. correct. he uses way too many tags like #railway #girl #boy #nonbinary #hottie #selflove #selfie etc etc but he gets 10 likes at max on. he has to deal with thomas_a.billington commenting “idc” under his posts almost every week

the older bunch of the cast don’t really use the internet that much. especially edward since he’s got books for the things he need help with. he doesn’t know how account verifications work so he gave up on social media. he’s very online on goodreads and online bookstores though. edward likes history videos. asmr too. the ones titled Gentle Rain - Rain Sounds For Sleeping, Concentration, Healing - 99% Works [10 Hours]. toby’s the same except he’s more casual

henry and gordon would struggle with opening and replying tonemails (edward too but he’s patient and doesn’t even use the internet that much). the latter especially to the point it pisses him off. “we should use letters like normal people” gordon says. he also doesn’t touch social media because “it’s beneath me” but we all know he struggles with it and is most likely to get baited into entering heated debates so he had to restrain himself. he does like cat videos. they’re cute. cooking channels too. he’s a bit embarassed about it though

henry founds himself stopping by forums like yahoo answers or quora every once in a while and even got into arguments with housewives about taking care of plants. gordon gets dragged into the mischief and encourages henry to fight back. show them who’s the boss in petunias and roses and dahlias. “do NOT lose. this is a matter of pride and dignity” the forum then got locked after 500 replies and henry gave gordon the silent treatment for 24 hours after he gained post internet argument clarity

tldr this is thomas’ relationship with his coworkers online

HTDC commentary - 29: pride

[Looking back at HTDC after nearly ten years: comments on lore, character notes, influences, art, whatever. May contain spoilers for later chapters.]

chapter text: 29: pride

In which Viatrix completes her pilgrimage, and proves that even though she's irritating, she's cooler than Iriel in every possible way.

“We are about to pass through the sacred barrier of the Ghostfence, which shields us from evil through the combined faith of thousands of souls of the honoured departed.

It's actually easy to include in-character exposition, if your characters are tedious pedants who like to lecture everyone! But yes, the final stage of the Temple pilgrimage involves a brief trip onto Red Mountain proper, which is terrifying at low levels. Especially if you get turned around in the blinding red ashstorms, and your "brief" trip turns into a panicked flailing skitter, trying to find the shrine before something horrible catches you.

The "combined faith of thousands of souls" powering the Ghostfence is another example of the Tribunal's extremely literal take on the power of faith. Though here, the souls are dead, so it's probably just the regular Tamrielic magical application of soul energy to act as a battery for something. I'm sure a Temple priest would disagree, but I don't think souls have anything as individual as faith. The faith came in when they chose to donate their souls to the Ghostfence, it's not still there afterwards. That would be like saying that because Grandma donated her body to medical science, this vaccine thinks you need to fix your hair and find a husband.

Iriel glared at her through bloodshot eyes, until the light became too painful, and he had to close them again. "You.” he said. A surge of nausea forced him to stop.

Red Mountain might be the least of Iriel's troubles. Moon sugar withdrawal was bad, but skooma withdrawal is on another level.

I love random-capitalising "slightly unhinged" text like this, in defiance of everyone telling me it's cringe and a tacky, unprofessional writing habit. One person even threatened to stop reading the fic, if I kept doing it! Sadly, no one has yet managed to get me to stop, though I may have to, if it becomes too embedded in pop culture as "mocking spongebob voice", since that's not my intended reading. That said, picturing Iriel using that tone is making me giggle, so even that may not work to restrain me.

“Well, I’m not standing for it,” she said, planting a hand firmly on her hip.

There's a little idle animation like this that female NPCs do, in Morrowind. Clearly, they thought it was too sassy for men, with the little hip tilt. Cowards. Anyway, I'm assigning it to Viatrix specifically, because Iriel later recognises her by it, when she's wearing a full-body plague doctor outfit.

Over the course of the next hour, the force of Viatrix’s will propelled Iriel through a bath, a comb, and into a clean shirt and pants

Powerful as Viatrix's will is, there's a more powerful force at work here: authorial engineering. I need Iriel to look a little bit less dead rat, marginally more like someone who has his shit together. Fortunately, not much more, because he only has to beat Julan, a man about to undergo disassembly by Daedra.

It doesn't matter. The important thing is that we cleansed ourselves. It’s symbolic.”

You wouldn't think that this statement of Viatrix's would stick around long, in Iriel's skooma-starved brain, but here he is, quoting it to himself, months later. Bitterly and sarcastically, but still. As if she gave him an oddly-shaped piece of metal, that he never figured out what useful thing he could do with it, but he can't quite throw it away, either. Iriel feels this way a lot regarding matters of symbolism and metaphor, ways of looking at the world that simply aren't true enough for him. And yet, these weird little fictions hang around in his mind. What are they good for?

“Don’t like robes. Too magey.”

Iriel dislikes the mage label, and prefers to avoid visual signifiers, but he could still wear a robe if he wanted to - lots of other people do. He's just making up a plausible excuse for what is really no more than a personal, non-psychologically-significant dislike of having a whole ton of extra fabric all around his legs, as he moves.

Once we’re on the mountain, you could catch the Blight if you don’t take better care.

Sorry, that wasn't fic commentary, just something I needed to get off my chest. Carry on.

“Thanks, Ma,” he muttered, but wrapped the scarf she gave him around his mouth and nose. It was made of stoneflower-blue silk, and embroidered with tiny sequins.

This scarf! If people were gonna set textual analysis essay questions about HTDC, a really good question might be: what is the symbolism of the stoneflower-blue scarf? Not because I know the answer; I don't. I just want to know what other people would write. You could absolutely invent some sort of thesis, I'm sure.

The scarf was a throwaway moment of detail that Iriel invested with way more personal significance than I expected. It'd been so long since he'd had something nice, something frivolously pretty, that suits him, and makes him feel good about himself. And, unlike the silk shirt he finds later, practical enough to wear on the regular! It became his signature clothing item in art - though opinions differ on whether the sequins are silver or gold. I can't remember if I ever specified.

“Plain and simple pilgrim fare again, I see,” he said, and took satisfaction in her expression as the barb hit its mark.

Iriel is being so spoiled with all these "valid targets", lately.

“It’s true that my clothes are expensive. When I left home, they were the only kind I had. I could have sold them and replaced them with rags, but what would that achieve? I am who I am. I see no purpose in hiding it.

And then she absolutely bodies him, in return. Just destroys him, with her whole "refusal to be ashamed of personal qualities she can't control", and "rejection of the idea that she should camouflage herself towards others, to make herself safer or more acceptable to them."

Dagoth Ur, lived in the central crater, plotting the destruction of the Tribunal, and cursing the land with his evil ash-blight.

Reverently, she placed a soul gem before the shrine, and knelt before it, praying aloud. “Thank you for your pride, Lord Vivec. I shall not doubt myself, or my people, or my gods…”

Pride is one of the core Temple virtues, and Viatrix is showing Iriel why. How it's a necessary defence mechanism, when others would seek to destroy you by targeting your insecurities and your self-esteem. Obviously I'm not gonna bring in the whole real-world "gay pride" angle in the fic, that'd be cheesy as hell, but of course, it's not unrelated. Pride is refusing to let other people hate you into hating yourself.

Teleportation: not narratively overpowered, provided your characters are stupid enough about it!

They're not the most dangerous, but ash slaves are so annoying.

At least, they are to Iriel, because of how frustrating magical battles are in Morrowind. Spells that hit each other collide in mid-air, wasting everyone's magicka, and I always get stuck in a poor-timing cycle of never actually getting a hit in. I know, I should just fucking dodge, but I'm really bad at video games, you guys.

On the plus side: look, I'm writing a fight scene! It's brief and poorly written (too many long words bogging down sentences and ruining the pacing, fight scenes need to feel sharp and tense), but at least I'm trying!

He was almost at the tunnel when he realised he could hear screaming, but it was coming from the other side.

While this chapter doesn't have what you'd call a climactic ending, and leads straight into the next, it's technically the end of the first narrative arc. As defined in my notes, anyway. The arcs have names, and I may or may not share them with you because, intended to be seen only by me, most of the names are kinda stupid. Case in point: the first 29 chapters are labelled "Sad Elf In Swamp". If you think you know what that's a reference to, no you don't, and what were you doing at the devil's sacrament?

It's the end of the arc, because it's the end of Ire's solo career, and the beginning of a complicated collaboration.
