Alone, Together | Chapter 18 | Morgan Rielly
Tumblr media
A/N:  These next two chapters are what I consider “The Vancouver Chapters”, so enjoy!  And yes, the BizNasty Does B.C definitely inspired this.
Bee had never been on a plane before, let alone business class.  She knew what planes looked like inside – she wasn’t stupid – but she was shocked to see where they were sitting: nice, plush, individual seats with a footrest, tables, big screens, and even a shelf up against the plane wall.  Morgan made sure they got window seats, because he knew she’d be taking pictures out of the window, especially as they flew over the Rockies.  The flight was just under five hours, so she had a lot of time to get as many pictures as she wanted.
Bee put most things in her checked luggage, so she really only had to bring her tote bag on the plane.  As she settled into her seat, she automatically opened the window covering and looked out onto the concrete of the Toronto airport runway.  Morgan settled into his seat behind her, leaning in so he could get close.  “You okay, bumblebee?”
She glanced behind her.  “These are really nice.”
“I know.”
“Do you always fly like this?”
“Pretty much,” he admitted.  “I’m a big boy.  I need my space.”
He was built like a fridge so she figured as much.  She also figured they’d be flying back to Toronto the same way.  She obviously had to admit this was nice.  She thought they’d be squeezed together like sardines in economy…not that she would have minded being squeezed next to Morgan.  She’d even prepared for that – she brought a book, Richard Llewellyn’s How Green Was My Valley, headphones, some Gravol (she didn’t know if she got sick on planes, for obvious reasons), some gum for when her ears popped.  She even bought snacks once they passed security.  She’d researched what she would need.  Morgan didn’t bring anything besides a neck pillow and headphones.  She knew he was used to the journey.  He probably knew the exact moment the plane would start to descend into Vancouver.
She also knew that he would want to sleep, but she didn’t know if she would be able to.  She knew it was probably dumb, but she had never been on a plane before and she wanted to remember the experience: the turbulence, the take off, the landing, hell even the airplane food.  It was an early morning flight, still only 6:30am as they boarded, the plane taking off at 7:30.  They’d be arriving at 9:30am Vancouver time if all went well.  His parents would be picking them up from the airport.
Bee wasn’t nervous about meeting his parents.  From what Morgan had told her about them, they seemed to be amazing people, genuinely nice and caring – they had to be if they raised Morgan.  She wasn’t nervous about meeting his brother, either, because Morgan told her so much about him and about his work on all the different movie sets in Vancouver and how cool it all was.  God, and then there’d be Maggie – Morgan’s original girl – wagging her tail and slobbering her with kisses…
She was excited more than she was nervous.
“Go Leafs go,” a passenger said quickly as he made his way through the aisle, hauling a giant backpack in front of him.  Bee whipped her head around to look at him.  He was in his mid-twenties, light brown hair with a hoodie and track pants on.  She watched as Morgan gave him a tight-lipped smile and a slight nod of the head.  “Shoulda been named an All-Star, Mo.  You’re the best defenseman in the league right now.”
Bee smiled.  Morgan was way too humble to take the comment seriously, even though she knew – and probably everybody on this plane knew – that the guy was right.  Morgan chuckled slightly at his comment.  “Yeah, but at least I get to spend a week at home now,” he said.
“Those videos the boys made for you were funny as shit,” he added, noticing the line in front of him was moving.  “You should be our next captain, bud.  You’re the fucking man.”
Morgan smiled politely.  Bee smiled too, wiggling her eyebrows.  “Thanks bud,” Morgan nodded his head one more time before the guy moved forward, disappearing into economy class.  Morgan leaned forward once he was gone.  “You still need to help me kill the boys after they released those videos.”
“I could never kill them for saying the truth,” she turned away from him dramatically, lying down in her seat just because she could.
***
Bee knew immediately who Morgan’s parents were because of their waving arms.  Nobody else in the arrivals section looked as excited as they did early in the morning.  His dad towered over his mom – she knew where he got his height from now – and his mom did a little jump of excitement when she saw them.  They followed as she and Morgan walked to their left down the ramp, lugging their suitcases behind them.
When they finally met, Morgan gave his parents big, warm hugs.  His mom rocked him from side to side for a few moments before finally letting go.  Morgan turned his attention to his dad, and Shirley turned her attention to Bee.  “Briony!  It’s so nice to finally meet you!” she exclaimed.
“It’s so nice to meet you too Mrs. Rielly,” Bee smiled.
“No no, you call me Shirley,” she said, extending her arms and giving Bee a strong, warm hug like she just did to Morgan.
When they let go, Bee focused her attention to Morgan’s dad.  “Mr. --”
“It’s Andy,” he said, giving her a quick hug.  “It’s very nice to meet you Briony.  Is this your first time in Vancouver?”
“Yes!  It’s actually my first time out of Ontario,” Bee said nervously.
“Well, Vancouver is the perfect city for first-time travellers!” Andy replied.  He turned his attention back to his son.  “Did you guys eat on the plane?  We can go have breakfast.”
“No no, we had something.”
“Alright,” Andy smiled.  “Then let’s go into the city.”
Everybody loaded themselves into the family SUV and Andy drove through the streets of Vancouver while Bee sat in the backseat, head practically out the window as she took in the scenery around her.  She felt a bit stupid taking out her phone to take pictures, but at one point, some mountains appeared in the background, and she couldn’t help but start snapping.  She’d Googled pictures of Vancouver so she’d know what it looked like, but actually being here and seeing everything was totally different.  It was a beautiful, sunny day outside despite it being winter, and the crisp morning air just made everything more beautiful.
Andy eventually drove to a place called Kitsilano Beach, where he parked the car on a residential street before they began walking.  Even though it was the middle of January, people were still out jogging, playing with their dogs, and Bee even thought she saw one person doing yoga.  They walked along the pavement path, before the beach, the beautiful mountains rising in the distance.  Even some sailboats were already out on the water.  It was all so picturesque, and Bee was sure she was being annoying with how many pictures she was taking.
“Briony, Morgan tells us you’ve been studying for your Master’s in Financial Economics,” Andy said as she finished another round of photos of the coast, smiling at her as she put her phone back in her purse.
“Oh, yeah,” she nodded.  “I’m finished now though.  Just got the paperwork about a week ago that I’ve passed everything and I’m officially graduating in June.”
“Heeeeey!  Congratulations!” he said excitedly.  “And now?”
“Now I’ve gotta get a job,” she joked.  “I actually have an interview at Scotiabank the Monday we get back.  I’m hoping something comes from it.”
“That’s fantastic, Briony!”
“She graduated with a 3.8 GPA!” Morgan chirped in from behind them where he was standing with Shirley.  “Straight A’s across the board!”
“Hey, can you teach Morgan some things?” Shirley laughed.
“He’s been learning!” Bee said earnestly.  Shirley whipped her head towards her son in shock.  Andy let out a loud ‘What?!’, causing Bee to laugh.  “It’s true!  He pulled out ‘Keynesian economics’ once during conversation, and now he’s got all the newspaper apps on his phone and will bring up Bank of Canada interest rates.”
“My son, Morgan Frederick Rielly, is bringing up interest rates and Keynesian economics?  Whoa ho ho,” Andy shook his head.
“Can you maybe not embarrass me in front of my parents?” Morgan asked, hands on his hips.
“What’s embarrassing?  It’s cute!” Bee giggled.
“It’s super cute!” his mom stressed.  “God, trying to get you to watch the news when you were younger was a struggle.  Now she’s saying you have their apps on your phone?  That’s growth, dear.”
As the four continued to walk along the path and joke around, learning more and more about one another, the beach stopped and they walked through a path of trees that obscured their view for a while.  When they emerged, Bee was shocked to see the Vancouver skyline stretched out before her in the distance, the mountains rising behind the tall condo buildings.
“Oh wow!” she exclaimed, walking past the Elsji Point sign to the edge of the Kitsilano Seawall.  She heard the waves crash up against the rocks and stepped on them, trying to get as close to the edge as possible.  “How cool is that?!” she shouted to no-one in particular.
“You like what you see, Briony?” Shirley laughed.
Bee looked back to see Morgan following behind her, balancing himself on the jagged rocks.  “It’s beautiful!” she called out to his parents, focusing her attention back on the skyline.  She felt Morgan’s fingers tickle the small of her back before he wrapped an arm around her shoulders, standing next to her on the rocks, looking out at the skyline.  “What a view!” she said, smiling from ear to ear as she looked up at him momentarily.
“I agree,” he smiled, not caring about the skyline.
***
Neither Morgan nor Bee truly minded that the rest of the day was spent with his parents.  They had taken an immediate liking to Bee, and after taking pictures together at the Kitsilano Seawall, they drove to Yaletown to have lunch before getting back in their car to drive home.  Sometime during the drive, they crossed the Lion’s Gate Bridge into North Vancouver.  The streets became leafier and more tree-lined, tall glass condo buildings making way for large single-family lots hidden by trees or built into cliffs and hills along the coast.
When Andy pulled in to what Bee could only assume to be their house, she was taken aback by the prettiness of it, and of course the size.  It was huge, bigger than what she was used to of course, with huge windows and a landscaped front yard with giant pots of flowers framing the front door.  Bee felt like she was looking at a castle.  Chateau Rielly.  This is where Morgan grew up.  This is where he’d wake up early for hockey practice and lug his giant bag out to the car.  This is where he’d play in the streets with his brother and friends before getting called in for dinner.  This is where he moved out of, at only fourteen years old, to pursue his hockey dream.
When Bee stepped inside the house, she was again taken aback at how it truly felt like a home.  Nothing she had ever lived in had felt this warm and inviting.  Right in the entryway, there were framed pictures of artwork Morgan and his brother Connor drew when they were young; weirdly shaped people with a house and a dog.  Morgan had drawn mountains in his while Connor drew a huge sun.
“Figured you two might want to relax a bit before dinner,” Andy said as he slipped out of his shoes.  “It’s already been a long day.”
A loud bark interrupted everyone, and Maggie came zooming around the corner, running straight towards Morgan.  He bent down immediately and she practically jumped into him, slobbering his face with kisses.  Her tail was wagging so quickly and so excitedly that it was banging against the floor and the wall.
“Hi baby girl!  Hi!  Hello!  Hello!” Morgan began cooing at her, scratching at her ears and letting her lick his face.  “Hi Maggie girl!  I’m home!  Yes!  I’m home!  Are you happy Maggie?  You happy to see me Maggie?”  Maggie barked in pure elation, even whimpering a few times as she kept jumping up on him.
“Oh, the love fest begins,” Shirley smiled, shaking her head at the sight before her.  “Sorry Briony, he’s going to smell like dog breath for the rest of the night.”
“Maggie loves me and I love my Maggie girl,” Morgan quipped as Maggie continued to lick at his face.  “Maggie, go meet Briony!  Who’s that?”
Maggie’s attention focused on Bee, and she waddled over to her at Morgan’s command and began sniffing her.  Bee didn’t have much experience with dogs besides Sarah Jessica Barker, and even then, Sarah Jessica Barker was a small dog.  Maggie was huge.  Bee stuck out her hand for Maggie to smell, and it only took a couple of sniffs for Maggie to start licking her.  “Hi Maggie.  Hi beautiful girl,” she said, kneeing in front of her to give her some more pets.  Maggie got excited at that and gave Bee’s face a giant lick, causing her to squeal.
“Oh great!  Now they’ll both smell like dog breath,” Andy rolled his eyes playfully.  “Mo, come on.  Go bring the suitcases upstairs and then come out and see the new deck.”
Morgan left Maggie unwillingly, grabbing both his and Bee’s small suitcases in both hands before climbing the stairs quickly.  Bee and Shirley followed close behind, with Maggie following Andy outside to the backyard.  Once they were all at the top of the stairs, Shirley and Bee took the suitcases from him before he went back downstairs and outside with his dad.
“You’re in here sweetie,” Shirley said, leading her down the hallway.  She opened the door to the spare room, all done up for Bee’s visit.  There were a bunch of pillows on the bed with a really cozy looking comforter.  Bee noticed a door leading to an ensuite bathroom and another further down the wall, probably a closet.
She took her suitcase from Shirley, hauling it onto the bed as Shirley walked over to the window to open the blinds, revealing an absolutely stunning view of a rocky cliff and trees, and even a sliver of the ocean.  God, was there anywhere that wasn’t beautiful here?  “Thank you for letting me stay in your home,” Bee said to her.
“Oh, there’s no need to thank me, sweetheart,” Shirley smiled.  “It’s not like we’d let you stay at a hotel when we have extra room.  You have your own washroom right through that door, and Morgan is just in the room beside you in case you need anything at night,” she explained.
“I almost insisted on it to Morgan,” Bee tried to joke.  “He wouldn’t hear any of it.”
“Then I taught my son well,” Shirley winked, walking over to the bed to start fluffing the pillows, as if they needed any more fluffing.
“I didn’t want you to feel like I was intruding on your time and space,” Bee explained.  “Um, I’m sure Morgan told you about me a little bit, and how I’m not used to all this stuff.”
Shirley stopped fluffing the pillow, placing it down on the bed before giving Bee a concerned look.  “He did, but only because I pried it out of him, like any mom would when he son tells her he has a new girlfriend,” she said.  “Which is all the more reason why you should stay here, in a family home, rather than some stuffy hotel.”
Bee nodded her head.  “Um, I know this might be a bit forward of me, but we can talk about it if you want.  I’m sure Morgan’s told you about that too…how upfront I am about it,” she half laughed.  “I’m not that sensitive about it.  I told Morgan the second time we hung out.”
“Honey, I’m not going to force you to talk about anything.  I’m just…” Shirley couldn’t find the right words.  She sat down on the bed and pat the seat beside her, so Bee joined her.  “I just want to make you feel as comfortable as possible while you’re here.  I know how much my son adores you and how much he cares about you.  And quite frankly, he’d probably kill me right now if he knew we were having this conversation,” she pulled a face, causing Bee to laugh slightly.  “I know your mom had her…troubles, and her addictions, and I know she wasn’t the best mother to you.  But Morgan told me how you worked yourself out of that life, and I know this isn’t much coming from me, but I’m very proud of you.”
Bee felt like crying at her words.  Besides Clarette telling her the same thing, she’d never heard a maternal figure say those words to her.  I’m proud of you.  It was the warmest feeling in the world; the best arrangement of four words Bee could hear from someone.  “It actually does mean a lot coming from you,” she said quietly.  “Morgan has told me a lot about you too.  How educated you are and how you started your own medical company.  He loves you guys so much.  Like I can tell…I can tell he wants to talk about you guys all the time, but he kinda holds back a bit, because he knows I don’t have those same experiences, with parents and a sibling and a dog, so he doesn’t want to make me feel uncomfortable.  But I like hearing that sort of stuff.”
“Morgan is a gentle soul,” Shirley nodded her head.  “A bit rare for a hockey player, but he is.  I remember…oh gosh, he’s going to kill me…” she shook her head quickly, “but I remember when he was a toddler and he grasped the idea of happiness – you know, how things can be happy and sad.  And when he did, all he used to ask was ‘Mamma happy?’  ‘Daddy happy?’ ‘Connor happy?’ ‘Plant happy?’ ‘Chair happy?’  He was always making sure everybody and everything around him was happy.  And if they weren’t, he’d work to make them happy again.  That’s never gone away with him.  It’s something that he’s kept all these years later.”
Bee couldn’t help but smile at what Shirley was telling her.  It was true.  Morgan was very in-tune with people’s emotions.  If one of his teammates was upset or stressed, he’d talk it out with them, lend them a listening ear, and try to make them feel better.  He did the same with her.  Always.  It was crazy how, even as a toddler, he had the same qualities.  “He’s definitely still kept that up,” Bee smiled.
Shirley placed her hand on Bee’s forearm, giving her a warm smile.  “I don’t want you to feel uncomfortable here, ever.  You are not a guest here.  If you’re every hungry or thirsty, just walk to the fridge and get what you want.  Fall asleep on the couch,” she said, being interrupted suddenly by Maggie’s bark, signalling Morgan and Andy were back in the house.  “You’re a gentle soul too, Briony.  Regardless of what happened in your past, and regardless of the tough exterior you may have had to put on to survive in this world alone.  Inside, you’re a gentle soul.  That’s why my son adores you.  Gentle souls stick together.”
Morgan’s loud footsteps pounding up the stairs prevented Bee from bursting into tears right then and there.  When he appeared in the doorway, he was greeted with Shirley rearranging a picture frame on the armoire and Bee sitting on the bed, looking out the window.  “Everything good?” he asked, taking in the scene of his mother and his girlfriend.
“Just admiring the view,” Bee pointed to the window, which faced out into the backyard, holding in her tears.
***
“Baby…baby…Bumblebee…Bumblebee…”
Bee thought she heard a voice, but she had been in such a deep sleep, she wondered if it was just a dream.  She opened her eyes, barely, to see a figure standing over her.  “M…Mo?”
“Baby, get up,” he shook her gently.
“What?”
“Get up.  We gotta go.”
“We gotta go?  Where?”
“It’s a surprise.”
“What?!”
“We gotta go somewhere, but it’s a surprise.”
“Is this some sort of sick joke?” she looked over at the alarm clock on the bedside table.  “It’s 4:30 in the morning, Mo.”
“I know.  But you need to trust me.”
She leaned up in bed, looked over to her window to see darkness outside.  “Is the sun even out yet?”
“No.  But that’s the best part.  Come on.  Wash your face and let’s go,” he said excitedly as he left the room.  She could see Maggie in the doorway waiting excitedly before she followed Morgan out of the room.
She got out of bed and quickly washed her face and brushed her teeth.  She brushed through her hair quickly and put on a hoodie and a pair of jeans, wondering to herself how cold it was outside, since it was still in the middle of the fucking night.  She emerged from her room to see Morgan pouring coffee into two canisters, a cool bag seemingly already packed with Tupperware.  Maggie was waiting patiently at Morgan’s feet, her tongue dangling out and something strapped to her body.
Bee rubbed her eyes to make sure she wasn’t seeing things.  “Am I hallucinating or is Maggie in a lifejacket?” she asked.
Morgan glanced behind his shoulder to smile at her, and smile down at Maggie.  “Yes, she’s in a lifejacket.”
“Is that a shark fin on top?”
“Mhm,” he nodded his head as he closed the coffee canisters.  “She’s not only the queen on land, she’s the queen of the ocean too.”
“Where are we going?” she tried to ask one more time as she watched him fling the cool bag over his shoulder.
“It’s a surprise,” he winked, handing her coffee.  “Now let’s go.”
He guided her through his parents’ backyard, and even through his neighbour’s backyard with a flashlight, down a path of rocks used as steps carved into the edge of the coast until they got to a dock.  Maggie followed close behind them, trotting her way down to the bottom.  There, a boathouse sat housing two compartments.  She could only assume one belonged to his family.  “Are you taking me out on a boat?” she asked.
“Yeah,” Morgan said, holding her hand as she manoeuvred by a few shaky rocks.   “You don’t get boat sick, do you?”
“I have no clue.  Are we allowed?”
“Why wouldn’t we be?” he smiled at her.  “C’mon, let me help you in.”
She grabbed his hand and he provided support as she stepped into the boat from the dock.  He gave her his coffee canister and the cool bag to store before bending at the knees to pick up Maggie in his arms and put her on the boat as well.  When he climbed in, he gave Bee a quick kiss before doing what he needed to do to prep the boat to take it out.  Once he turned the motor on, Maggie barked excitedly and he started driving it along the water.
He drove the boat through the Strait of Georgia, in between Keats, Gambier, and Bowen Islands, as if he was taking it to Gibsons – a regular summer activity.  The scenery was more beautiful than Bee could have ever imagined, even better than the pictures she had Googled to get a better understanding of what Morgan grew up surrounded with.  The mountains looked like they appeared straight from the water as a light fog lay on their tops, creating a haze to go with the slow-coming sunrise that illuminated the scenery for her.  The deep blue of the ocean mixed with the deep hues of the mountains was breathtaking.  The sound of the water, so calm and so serene as it hit the side of the boat, provided the perfect background music to the scenery before her.
She was a city girl through and through.  Born and raised in Toronto, a product of the concrete and streets she called home.  But out here, on the boat, with mountains before her and the natural scenery of the Sunshine Coast surrounding her, Bee couldn’t think of a better morning.
Morgan eventually stopped the boat, turning the engine off as he took out a blanket and brought it with him to the seat on the back of the boat where Bee was sitting.  He sat next to her, unfolding the blanket and laying it across them.  Maggie came trotting towards them, still with her shark fin lifejacket on, and lay down at Morgan’s feet.
“Are we just gonna watch the sunrise?” she asked as she snuggled into him.
He wrapped an arm around her and clasped her hand that was lying on his chest.  He brought it up quickly to his lips and kissed it.  “That’s exactly what we’re gonna do,” he whispered.
And they did.  For at least two whole hours, they sat in the boat, attached to each other, and watched the sun rise over the mountains and illuminate everything in its sight.  It made the waves look like a sea of diamonds.  It made the mountains giants among their miniscule existence in the boat.  It made Morgan’s blue eyes shine like sapphires every time she looked up at them and kissed him.  It made her believe there was nothing better than this; there was nothing better than being cuddled next to Morgan, on a boat in the middle of the Georgia Strait, watching the sunrise over the West Coast.
Despite Morgan not wanting the morning to end, he knew that they’d eventually have to get back to his parents’ house for breakfast.  He didn’t want to, though.  He could have stayed out here for the rest of the day.  He could have stayed out here forever.  He could have forgotten about every other worry he had and just live on the boat with Bee and Maggie.  But he knew his parents wanted to spend more time with her before their day in Victoria with their friends, and he didn’t want to deny them getting to know her.
Suddenly, a small explosion came up from the water.  Water sprung up from something beneath the water, and Bee yelped slightly in fear.  “What was that?”
Morgan paused, a small smile appearing on his face.  He waited patiently for another to happen, and when it did, he smiled even more.  “It’s a pod of whales.”
“It’s a what?!” Bee demanded, suddenly getting scared.  “Oh my God, are they – are they gonna capsize the boat?!”
“No no no, we’ll be fine,” Morgan said.  “They’re peaceful.  This isn’t Moby Dick.”  He walked back to the steering wheel of the boat and turned on the engine.
“Excuse me?  What do you think you’re doing?” she asked as another whale sprayed water from their blowhole.
“We’ve gotta follow the pod, Bee.”
“Are you nuts?”
“Bee, do you know how rare it is to be this close to a pod?  At this time of year?  We have to!”
“Morgan, we’re going to die.”
She was such a city girl.  He just laughed as he adjusted the motor on the lowest setting, just enough to get the boat moving to follow the whales but not loud enough to scare them in any way.  “Bumblebee, it’s going to be magic.  Don’t worry, we’ll be safe.  My dad and I have done this a lot.”
They began following the pod slowly, Bee looking over the edge of the boat to see if she could see the figures of the whales under the water.  She couldn’t – she figured they were too far away – but then another whale sprayed more water from its blowhole not too far from them and she saw some of it come out of the water.  She gasped at the sight.  “Morgan!  It came up a little!” she called out.
Another whale, seemingly right beside the other one, did the same thing, except its tail fin came up too.  Bee gasped again and she kept muttering ‘Oh my God’ over and over to herself.  After a few minutes and more tails coming up from the water, Bee couldn’t believe what she was seeing.  She looked at Morgan.  “What kind of whales are they?” she asked.
“By the tail, they look like humpbacks,” he said, noticing another blowing of water out in the distance.  They were becoming more frequent now, and he knew what that meant.  He stopped the boat, killed the engine, and went over to Bee, who was still looking over the edge.  “Bee, look out into the distance.  They’re gonna breach.”
“What’s that mean?”
“They’re gonna jump.  All of them.”  He wrapped his arms around her, standing behind her so her back was flush with his chest, and leaned his head gently on top of hers.  He waited patiently, a few more blows of water and some tail fins coming up.
Then the magic happened.  Against the backdrop of the sunrise and the mountains in the distance, the humpback whales began to breach.  One after another, their bodies jumped out of the water, splashing down in a heap.  It was like they were putting on a show for her as they kept breaching, moving across the water but going further into the distance.  They were the only ones out, the only ones witnessing this beautiful, natural display.  Bee screamed and jumped out of Morgan’s arms in pure jubilation as she watched, bending over in shock and bringing her hands up to cover her mouth, almost cackling at what she was witnessing.  More screaming of ‘Oh my God!’ every time one breached, huge gasps at the size of them, pure shock and wonder and elation and euphoria spreading through her veins.  Never, never in a million years did she think she’d be able to witness something so beautiful and ethereal.
When their activity died down, and they were getting too far to truly see, she looked back at Morgan, her jaw on the floor at what she had just witnessed.  He had a giant smile on his face too, so incredibly happy that she was able to see them.  She walked slowly into his outstretched arms, her hands still over her mouth in shock.  He wrapped his arms around her again tightly, placing a quick kiss on the crown of her head.
“That was…” she began, but she couldn’t find the right words to truly express what she was feeling.  She’d never done drugs before, but this is what she imagined it was like to feel high.
“See?  And you thought they’d capsize the boat,” he joked.
“I can’t believe I just saw that.  I…” she trailed off, again unable to truly find the right words.  “Morgan, that was incredible.”
“I know.  It’s magic.”
“Oh my God.  Oh my God.  And you’ve seen that more than once?” she asked.
He nodded his head.  “Quite a few times, actually.”
“God, Morgan.  You’re so lucky.”
Her tone brought him back down to earth a bit; made him truly realize that yes, he was lucky to have been able to witness something like that more than once.  He realized that for someone who had grown up in the city, all concrete and skyscrapers and university buildings, what she just saw really was magic; a reminder of the natural world that still existed, that would still exist after that concrete, those skyscrapers, those university buildings were all gone.  There would always be the ocean.  There would always be nature.
There would always be magic.

The sound of Morgan’s scream and splash in the pool was sure to upset the neighbours.  After cooking (read: barbequing) Bee dinner all by himself, he had convinced Bee to take a late night dip in the pool as the sun set on the West Coast.  She didn’t know how to swim, but that didn’t matter to him.  It wasn’t about the swimming.  His parents were spending the night at their friend’s house in Victoria on Vancouver Island, so they had the whole house to themselves.
He had changed into his bathing suit quickly – an old one he’d found in a drawer in his bedroom that was a bit too small now, but whatever – and met Bee outside before he made a run for it and dove into the pool.  He’d already adjusted the pool temperature so it was a bit warmer.  He thanked God his parents hadn’t winterized it this year because his mom wanted to practice water aerobics and Maggie would swim to get exercise to lose weight (the vet was wrong, Morgan thought – Maggie was a chunky girl but she was a good girl and didn’t need to lose any weight if she didn’t want to).
He watched as Bee followed close behind him, her comfy bathrobe still on, concealing her body.  She looked back nervously into the house as she watched him swim around.  “You…your parents aren’t home, right?”
“Bee, we drove them to the ferry this morning.”
“And like, we know for sure that they got on the boat?” she asked, fidgeting with the tie on the robe before looking back into the house.
“Can you stop being so paranoid,” he deadpanned.  “They’re gone.  It’s just you and me, baby.  And Maggie.  But she’s sleeping on her bed because it’s past her bedtime.”
“That fact that your dog has a bedtime really says something, you know.”
Morgan watched as Bee disrobed slowly, and he couldn’t help the giant smile that appeared on his face when she dropped it to the floor, leaving her in her one-piece swimsuit.  It was a black deep V-neck, a majority of it the solid colour while a part of it was striped.  It wasn’t high cut at the hips or deeply revealing in any way, but Bee filled it out so well.  As she bent over to fold the robe haphazardly on the deck chair, he saw the material ride up.  He put his fingers between his lips and whistled loudly.
“Can you not?” she gave him a look, somewhere between amused and annoyed.  “You might wake up your neighbours.”
He rolled his eyes.  “Can you get in here?”
She left her robe alone, walking gingerly towards the pool.  She’d never learned how to swim before, and although the pool wasn’t that big, she was still nervous.  She stood at the edge, watching Morgan as he tread water.  That meant he was in the deep end.  “Can you go into the more shallow water,” she requested nervously.
He did as he was told, moving towards the more shallow part.  He watched as she moved with him.  He brought his arms up, beckoning her in.  “C’mere,” he said.
“Morgan…don’t let go,” she said nervously.  “I mean it.  I don’t know how to swim at all.”
“I won’t, I won’t,” he said, licking his lips as she bent down and sat on the edge of the pool.  “You just gonna wiggle in?” he asked.
“I guess?  Should I do something different?” she worried.
“No no, that’s fine.”
“And you’ll catch me when I go in right?”
“Of course.”
She wiggled her body off the edge nervously and landed in the water with a splash, Morgan catching her automatically.  She held on to him around his shoulders with a death grip.  “Mo?” she started kicking her feet instinctively from beneath her.
“I got you, I got you,” he said comfortingly, wrapping his arms completely around her.  “Stop kicking your feet.”
“Well what am I supposed to do with them?”
“Just wrap ‘em around me,” he whispered, his hands trailing down to her thighs.  “Like this.”
“Is that safe?”
He couldn’t help but smile again.  “Yes, it’s fine because I know how to swim.  You’re also only in like, five feet of water, and your incredible hunk of a boyfriend stands at a staggering six-foot-one.”
Bee snorted.  “You are honestly the worst.”
He moved away from the ledge and submerged her more in the water.  She grabbed onto him a little bit tighter as he did so, still nervous about the fact that she couldn’t swim.  “You look incredible in your bathing suit,” Morgan said, trying to get her mind off her fear.
“I think it shrunk.  I washed it before bringing it here and now it keeps riding up my butt,” Bee revealed.
“Whatever happened, it looks incredible,” he repeated, his hands wandering to her butt now that she mentioned it.  “It just hugs your entire body perfectly.  It looks hot.”
“Morgan.”
“I’m being serious.”
“I know you are,” she giggled, and in that moment, Morgan realized she was probably laughing because she could feel his growing erection in his swim trunks.
“And your boobs,” he continued.
“Morgan.”
“God, your boobs look even better.”
“Can you not.”
“Nuh uh, you’re gonna hear this,” he shook his head.  “You look phenomenal.”
She smiled at him, biting her bottom lip as she played with the wet hair at the nape of his neck.  She couldn’t believe how the day had turned out.  Even though she had to wake up at 4:30 in the morning because of Morgan’s surprise, it was beyond worth it.  The time they spent together with his parents felt so natural and unforced, like nobody was putting on airs and graces just to impress the other.  Finishing off the day with Morgan’s home cooked dinner and now a dip in the pool, she really couldn’t believe how much fun she’d had.  “I think this might be one of the best days of my life,” she said softly.  “I’ve had so much fun today.  Everything has been so…amazing.”
“Oh yeah?”
“Yeah,” she nodded her head.  “I know this is my first vacation ever, but I could get used to this.”
Morgan laughed, giving her a quick kiss.  “I’ll bring you here anytime you want Bumblebee.  You just tell me when.”
She bit her lip again, and Morgan couldn’t take it, so he leaned in to kiss her and he wasn’t able to stop.  She reciprocated readily and she felt him move in the water, back to the edge, so he could push her up against it.  As the kisses got heavier and steamier, Bee couldn’t help but run her hands through Morgan’s wet hair and drag her nails down the muscles in his back.  As was usual, Morgan began leaving a trail of kisses along her jawline and down her neck, making sure to move back up to her lips and stick his tongue down her throat.
“Briony?” he said when he pulled away to catch his breath.  He gulped.  Her lips were swollen from all the kissing.
“Hmmm?”
“I love you.”
She tried not to let her body freeze up.  She tried not to look shocked, or stunned, or that she wasn’t expecting it at all, because she had been for a little while now, because she knew the feeling was there with him, even if he hadn’t said the three words yet, and quite frankly, the feeling was there with her too, it’s just that she didn’t have the confidence like he did to say it out loud first, and - -
“Briony?” his voice, nervous as ever, interrupted her internal thoughts.
“I love you too Morgan,” she said automatically, adamant to not overthink it.  Love was complicated, so complicated, but love was also simple.  If you loved someone, you knew.  End of story.  The feeling could creep up, the feeling could come all at once, the feeling could overwhelm and engulf you completely, but when you knew, you knew.
Morgan and Briony knew.

The View from Global Britain (a small Island off the North West of Europe, sailing North-by-North-West towards an unknown destination)
Tumblr media
Later, when he reviewed the strange sequence of events that led to the breakdown of order and the reversion of the high rise residence to a state of near primitive excess and violence, Dr Gove concluded that it might all be traced back to that one day...
A sickly, swollen orange early morning sun squinted pallidly through the chemical haze over the East End of London’s Docklands. Gove reached over casually from his balcony chair to pick up one of the three books lying on his coffee table. It was a warm day already at 8am outside on the apartment balcony:  he had not bothered to change out of his boxer shorts and T-shirt. A well thumbed classic Penguin edition of George Orwell’s Collected Essays and Journalism Volume 4, lay on one side of the reclining beach style chair, that was his usual morning professional treat before the driver arrived. It was marked with pink post it slips on the pages of the essay ‘The Lion and the Unicorn’. Underneath, was a glossy, less well read edition of translated selections from Michel Foucault’s 1970 College de France Lectures on Governmentality. But the book he perused over the top of his red designer Ace & Tate glasses – which he had bought on the last trip to Amsterdam – was a cherished copy of Roger Scruton’s The Philosopher on Dover Beach. An opera lover, the strains of one of Wagner’s Rings could be heard from his Danish Bang & Olufsen state-of-the-art stereo system inside. Funnily enough, he had seen it live together with his friend, rival and now boss, Johnson, and their now ex-wives in Germany, only a few weeks before D-Day, all that time ago. He congratulated himself once again on the purchase of the Segafredo coffee maker, as he drained the content of his third nespresso of the morning, pausing only slightly to feel the slight twinge of pain that followed in his chest. If only he were George Clooney, he thought, wryly.
Such was the cool clarity of his thoughts, that he barely stirred as a scream was heard from the Branson Mansion above him on the 255th floor of the monstrous tower block he lived in. This state of the art tower occupied mainly by high ranking government officials such as himself, or top end CEOs such as Branson, was one of two similar twin towers – “The Rock” across from “The Edge” – that commanded the entire festering zone wasteland of the former Docklands, north of Greenwich. The high rises were impregnable silver fortresses, self contained with sporting facilities, state of the art cinematic entertainment, and a high end shopping mall, that also functioned seamlessly as child care and schooling facilities for families, and contained all other essential services. The building was equipped with two helicopter landing pads that usually were high enough to clear the low lying cloud of pollution which mostly separated the social classes. Below the towers, under ground level society, was an interconnected underground elite parking facility, that led directly out on to the national freeway grid. His quizzical blue eyes lifted up momentarily from the pages of the philosopher Scruton elucidating a point about Edmund Burke, as a large dead dog thrown from above, flew past the balcony and down, a further half kilometer or so, before crashing through the roof of one of the dozen White “Go Home Immigrants” hostility vans parked there. There was a small commotion among a group of female cleaning service workers arriving for work, apparently Polish, from the distant sound of their foreign voices in the silent city morning. There were still irregularities in the population, he surmised.
He shifted his body with discomfort, however, when he noticed that one or two drops of a rabid red froth from the half decapitated dog had landed on the page of Scruton’s text. He lay the book aside to make a note on a pad that Branson would have to be asked to leave the country.
Gove had been around as a shadowy governmental advisor in the Santiago and Buenos Aires of the 1970s; you sometimes knew when it was a time for a change. These were places he had learned his trade. He recognised though that for all its rationality, violently capturing, torturing and then dumping by helicopter these “nowhere” types in the Thames Estuary was no longer a viable option in the England of the Twenty First Century. Yes, they were a fifth column. These cosmopolitan, nomadic, “transnational” intellectuals and their rich compatriots, who shared a hypocritical nostalgia for the free moving global planet of their youth; a few were still EU sympathisers and internationalist terrorists. Still, he smiled wryly, there was no going back to the River Plate during the heady days of the 1978 World Cup. Even for a criminal like Branson, it was not a practical option. Well, he’d made damn sure that his superior Mrs Thatcher wash her hands of any responsibility for anything her old friend, General Pinochet, had done. And it was true that after, his comrade General Galtieri had returned the favour to the dear Iron Lady, who had been in a tough spot herself in 1981. What they devised was the courtesy of a staged, “low level” invasion of the Falklands Island, that had proven a pioneer of a new brand of simulacra wars (“good for politics, good for business”, a military showcase “win-win-win” all round) that independent islands could engage in to maintain autarkic economic dynamism and electoral support in an now entirely protectionist world. Those were the stuff of international relations today, but always dangerous of course given the hardware, sometimes even nuclear, involved. Protest was usually muted among any remaining “Remain” activists or (so-called) “global” protestors. There were still plenty of academic sanctuaries abroad for renegade university academics, and Branson would be easily “persuaded” – with the right threat –  to take a one way ticket to New York or Los Angeles; places where enclaves of humanitarian CEOs still grumbled together in secret societies about the policies of supreme leader Donald Trump.
He wondered about the scream, though, and idly flicked on the telescreen that was partly masked behind a reproduction of a Kandinsky print on the dining room wall. The Party spokesman was celebrating loudly another victory for the People, that had been delivered that morning, like clockwork, with monotonous weekly regularity. The magic numbers: 52% for Leave, 48% for Remain; a weekly plebiscite delivered electronically by a large, government owned public opinion survey company, Big Big DATA Inc. The weekly vote stabilised the ongoing national need to adjust the population – for example, by removing persons of certain foreign extraction – to deliver the correct mathematical proportion that had been adjusted to represent the exact optimal mix for a definitively binding democratic result (the formula went): “democratic outcomes in divided societies which had decided to resolve their differences by a simple direct Yes/No method”. It was also one reason why they could not go on more strongly with the policy his previous boss Mrs May had devised. The “Go Home” Immigration vans and deportation squads (the “weekly hostility” she called it), particularly targeted at the heavily Europeanised university academic population. Too many deportations and the Remain vote (“Remoaners”, he chuckled) might be too quickly depleted.
The screen changed to an image of a man in a red tie, the officially employed Opposition Leader that Gove himself had hired in one of his occasional, but nonetheless regular, strokes of genius. The annoying man on screen swiftly changed the topic as always to a passionate denunciation of the poverty conditions of white working class voters. What a national shame it was, he said, they had been forced to live now for several decades of austerity gentrification and slum clearance, that had left nothing much of most major cities in the kingdom except mile upon mile of concrete wreckage underneath the sporadic, tree like growth of these huge, shiny residential blocks. Most of these had been built by shady Shanghai and Istanbul owned corporations that had been offered bi-lateral franchise access to the Island, in spite of other barriers to World Trade.
He went back to his laptop writing, a new proposal for entirely consolidating a nationalisation of the national game, which he had loosely imagined as an evolution of the Eton Wall Game. An architect of the national curriculum that had expurgated any traces of “global citizenship” from the education of Engand’s youth, Gove’s influence over the last years had extended to all areas of national culture where some sort of withdrawal from the previously established global or international practices needed to be conceived. Sport was his new brief. The idea had first come to him while watching the World Cup of Summer 2018: the brilliant combination of young British Black and White talent – Ali, Lingard and Kane – that had combined to score goal after goal against foreign allcomers – Japan, Columbia, Sweden – before unfairly succumbing to evil European refereeing against Croatia in the semifinal. As all the newspapers had said, in that hot and heady summer after the first Brexit vote, all future troubles were forgotten as England had united, and seemed to throw away all bitterness and caution in celebration, drinking, cheering, loving and kissing; the white St.George red cross fluttered everywhere over a happy and unified multi-racial land.
Indeed, as economists made clear, the date of January 31st 2020 was the demographic turning point. D-Day, it was called now, a national holiday; Independence Day, being the other major national festival on 23rd June. D-Day, Gove had argued, was the date at which Britain’s international and foreign population was at its optimal peak of absorption into a wholly national economy. The doors could be clanged shut on freedom of movement, but also on trade and industry, since Gove and his colleagues had devised a failsafe scheme to enable Britain to slowly transform all of its internationalised practices into distinct, diverse, incompatible alternatives, that would by their difference and originality, be highly innovative, rich in IP, and world beating. They would however have no compatibility with the outside; of little moment, given the huge backwater of an empire the Island still could call upon. This left a problem of course, for Britain’s national sport and greatest global export, football. This had necessitated Gove’s creative intervention, adapting the Eton Wall Game. He chuckled again at the thought of his heroes Ali, Lingard and Kane, mucking in with the boys, down in the scrum next to the wall, just as Gove, Johnson, Cameron, Goodhart and their idol Orwell had all done as youngsters.
This was still a white paper, for now, and the nation had continued to rely on bi- and multi-lateral agreements and some irregularities to allow the open labour market for the Championship League. It was true: it had more Italian and Portuguese football managers, and more star African players than ever. And yes, it was an exception to the nation’s stringent anti–immigration, zero foreigner policy. A mere “anomaly” , he had called it on Question Time.
What economists and demographers had also discovered though in 2016 was fateful. A now legendary paper by a demographer called Coleman, its framed original folio at the entrance to the British Museum, had shown that if population trends continued – with freedom of movement and immigration – the original White British population would become a minority by 2070, amidst mixed marriages, higher immigrant child birth rates, and (far) too many “people of colour” among foreign-origin migrants. Gove was analytic enough to recognise these populations had been sources of the extraordinary boom years of the 1990s and 2000s, but had been the one thinker with the foresight to see that the door had to be shut in June 2016, if Britain was ever to integrate all these human resoruces and become an independent island again. The People was called upon, and dutifully delivered its 52%. The answer was naturalising, rigorously, everyone on the Island at that moment in time – whether they wanted it or not. That was the key although it would be havoc for the weekly referendum that he knew was needed to maintain the 52% plebiscite of democracy over the Remain vote – hence the further statistical tricks and legal exclusion – and “disappearances” out to sea, if necessary.
They were well on the way to creating a new British population, however, which was remarkable for its multi-racial super-diversity” (it was called) and yet could maintain stably what another economist, Collier, had calculated as England’s uniquely 80% English DNA national origins, traced back to the Magna Carta. Freedom and Rationality could grow again on this soil.
It was of course on that day, 31st January 2020, that England unveiled its secret plan to escape from Europe, at the cliffs of Dover: making use of the decaying tunnels abandoned by Eurostar and roll-on-roll-off transportation companies, the government had motorised the white cliffs, using a clever combination of nuclear and wind power, that in fact would enable a significant geological shift to begin to move the Island (henceforth capitalised) in a North-by-North-Westerly direction towards the Atlantic. The colony of Ireland would be merged again, as it collided with the British Isles, and a Scotland somewhat reduced -- natural shrinkage caused by damage to its exterior north west coastline buffered by the rough merging and the seas as the Island moved implacably in the direction of Greenland. The South East of England became the only temperate part of the Island as it moved out to sea, further driving up housing prices.
And so on that day, the TVs were all re-set to Telescreens and Party news only, and the new People’s Democracy began. Gove’s slightly lazy left eye almost welled with a gin soaked tear, as he recalled the first judder and grinding geological movement of the Island at the Dover coast. On the cliffs, all the major national dignitaries and leaders had gone to celebrate the occasion. Yes, the Island was moving in the sea, and it had been followed by the slow, at first imperceptible descending of a mist, then an ever thicker fog, which cut off all visible trace of the receding continent across the water. As had been planned, telecommunications and internet networks were disrupted to come under strict territorial control again, and the Island had its independence back. News footage of Lady Diana’s funeral had been used as the first broadcast, to set the right tone. The people cheered wildly, underneath the white and red cross flags, across the nation – the true World Cup spirit back again – as it headed out, impregnable and forever undefeated, towards the icy waters of the North West Atlantic....

It may only have been synchronicity, but at that very moment in a liberal arts college in Southern California, Dr Wong, a young Asian Amercian academic put down her laptop, and reached for a lemonade. The book on her table was a new edition of Gayatri Spivak’s collected essays. The palm trees over the boulevard swayed lightly as a sweet breeze blew in from the desert.
She finished the final sentence of the draft of of a paper for Global Text, which proposed the theoretical framework for the creation of a new interdisciplinary field of occidentalist area studies, “England Studies”. The topic had strangely never been tried before. She had made her name as a post-doc in cosmology, studying black holes (like Steven Hawking, she used to joke), but had switched briefly but brilliantly to zoology during the first five years of her teaching career, making a cutting contribution to contemporary Japanese cultural studies, writing about its remarkable population of otaku and cosplay database animals. However, publisher interest in this well known remote but inaccessible East Asian Galapagos fantasy island lost somewhere in the Pacific, had been waning for some time. Were there not other black holes to discover? One day at the gym a new idea came to her. Why not somewhere in Europe instead of Asia, as a next career move? – especially since the EU had become such a historical curiosity, since its demise. After all, nobody could now quite work out what on Earth anyone had been thinking when they dreamed ludicrously of “European Community” or – and this one really took the grand prix – “European Citizenship”!!. What hilarious and zany times those European post-war “trentes glorieuses” had been!
Yet, ten years on from Independence Day, it seemed that Britain (as it was sometimes still referred to, in academic circles) had moved far enough away from mainland Europe into the upper ocean streams of the Atlantic – somewhere between “Greenland” and “Iceland”, which already had fields devoted to them – to allow for a new field of Area Studies, however challenging the remote fieldwork there. An Island, no doubt with its own strange, unsustainable, close-to-extinct creatures, practices and ideas, like 3G phone technology before the iPhone.
This would surely get her tenure, or even an outside job offer on this year’s market, certainly good enough to allow a fresh negotiation with her Department Chair, she thought....

Nielsen Jenkins, Mt Coot-Tha House
Mt Coot-Tha House by Nielsen Jenkins was completed for a family member of one of the architects, on an empty bushland block next to their shared childhood home in Brisbane.
Designed as a wedge that has lodged itself into the mountainside, the house wraps around a luscious green central courtyard, and provides both connection to and protection from the elements.
The project explores ideas of connection and refuge within a site characterised by its slope and extreme bushfire exposure.

Archier, Corner House
Presenting as a solid fibre cement-clad volume to the street, Corner House by Archier references the board and batten detail of typical fishing cottages in its Flinders, Victoria location.
An experimental floor plan is revealed inside, with living areas positioned in each corner of the dwelling, connected by stepped walkways acting as gallery spaces. This layout accommodates a set of new routines for the clients as they settle into retirement, supporting strategies of occupation where two people could live together with equal parts connection and freedom.
The house and landscape mediate the relationship between the occupants, with each corner volume acting as an independent space, but with large windows that promote a visual connection between areas. The courtyard plays a crucial role in this gesture, filtering and softening views across the project.

Architects EAT, Bellows House
A single row of mature poplar trees forms a soft foreground to what’s considered the main facade of this Flinders, Victoria house by Architects EAT. Trees cast morning shadows onto the white concrete masonry blocks, animating its long articulated form. Together with the unusual shapes of the frustum roofs, these evoke street engagements and curiosities.
Being a beach house where extended family and friends often gather, spaces have been designed to facilitate collective experiences: kids bunkering together; an open washroom that doubles as a mud room; multiple entry points into the house; and different indoor and outdoor living areas.

Rob Kennon Architects, Elwood Bungalow
This Elwood, Victoria project by Rob Kennon Architects relies on the idea of subtracting space as much as adding it.
Occupying the former land of a rear garden, the renovation embodies a desire to turn away from the neighbouring walls, in favour of an inward dial plan that axially and infinitely looks onto itself.
The ‘addition’, a low-lying single-storey extension, builds square up-to all three rear boundaries and subtracts a circle garden out from the middle. The resulting form visually and functionally aligns with the family’s values of openness and connectedness.

Studio Bright, 8 Yard House
Rather than a traditional house with a singular backyard, 8 Yard House by Studio Bright is distributed along the length of its North Fitzroy site, punctuated with a series of variously sized outdoor courtyards.
Across the whole site are eight outdoor spaces, the largest between the studio, garage and the main volume of the house. A central located pool becomes another landscape area either to use or look out across.
Overall, the architectural form is defined by an almost monumental brick construction detailed with perforations, rhythmic built-in columns and planter boxes.

Furminger, River House
Furminger have repurposed an existing weatherboard Brisbane home through minimal intervention.
A primitive architectural intention was used to establish building and landscape through the metaphor of a ruin. The site was conceived as a large garden to hold program for daily activities. Heavy masonry walls intersect the site, carving out public and private courtyard gardens, creating new entries into rooms through garden spaces.
A strategy was developed to use concrete as cheaply as possible, using what many would consider commercial or industrial construction techniques. The entire structure was constructed from tilt up concrete panels, which were poured and stacked on site.

Benn & Penna Architecture, Henley Clays
Henley Clays by Benn & Penna involves alterations and additions to a freestanding brick cottage in Sydney’s Lower North Shore. Additions are framed upon a heavy brick plinth that extends the sandstone base of the existing cottage, forming a series of landscape-inspired rooms that gently ascend through the home.
The material quality of the spaces is robust and earthy, with brickwork used throughout floors and walls. The mortar colour has been matched to the brickwork to amplify the monolithic and landscape like qualities of the project, while openings have been carefully arranged to puncture the building’s mass and wash its cave-like spaces with natural light.
Throughout the houses are gradually occurring level changes, encouraging the dweller to meander through the space. Steps between each level are used to demarcate the spaces, making them feel both intimate, while connected to the rest of the house.

Anthrosite, Hamilton Courtyard
This Newcastle project by Anthrosite presented the rare opportunity of converting two detached houses into one home. Instead of being pressured into market norms of maximising floor space, the clients were more concerned with creating a series of family spaces that felt connected to one another.
The result is a celebration of the courtyard; a generous central area that unites the wings of the house and promotes visibility, allowing the occupants to remain connected to each other even while engaged in individual tasks.
The importance of the courtyard’s role in the house is duly acknowledged with the main entry. An intimately scaled passage leads off the street, opening out not into the home but onto the private and calming courtyard garden.

Blair Smith Architecture, Brunswick Lean-To
This addition to a heritage listed cottage in Brunswick, Melbourne by Blair Smith Architecture showcases how homes can be enriched through modest architectural intervention.
The circa 1900 double-fronted cottage now sits alongside a new 51 square metre addition, achieving a high level of detail and finish, within a limited budget. This new building takes formal and programmatic cues from the dilapidated lean-to structure it replaces, while overcoming its shortcomings: a lack of aspect, awkward layout, and poor thermal performance.
The northern facade is divided into 11 modules characterised by three sliding timber screens on a single track. These screens have numerous purposes; they control heat gain, glare and offer an increased level of privacy to surrounding development.

Studio Prineas, Bona Vista
Bona Vista in Sydney’s inner-west reinterprets the characterful features of its Federation frontage, forging a warm domestic setting for family life.
In line with heritage guidelines, the council was highly prescriptive of the building envelope, forms and materials of the new addition. The architecture embraces the hip roof profile, while introducing an unconventional internal ceiling line; a surprising and memorable volume articulated by partially obscured skylights filtering natural light.
Studio Prineas have drawn a level change that once separated house and garden into the interior, forging a distinction between the old and new architecture, and connecting the new addition to the landscape.

Edition Office, Kyneton House
A refined palette of gracefully ageing, tactile materials defines this country house by Edition Office in Kyneton, Victoria.
The greatest inspiration for the project came from the client’s ambition to capture the passing of time through curated views of the garden, and white ceiling volumes that pick up the fluctuating levels of natural daylight.
The home’s deepened position within the site allows its relatively simple brick form to avoid feeling dominated by the garden, but instead wrapped and softly enveloped by it.

Fox Johnston, SRG House
This 1970s heritage-listed house originally owned by Sir Roy Grounds in Balmain, NSW has been reengineered for contemporary family life by Fox Johnston.
Keeping within the building footprint, Fox Johnston have carved extra space and forged stronger connections to landscape and place, while maintaining the integrity of the original structure and material language.
Interventions focused on restoring the superstructure; better connecting the home to the landscape; converting lower-ground space (previously housing an air-conditioning plant) into two bedrooms; replacing the ‘80s garage with a new structure and apartment for multigenerational living; and softening the geometry of the original grid design.

FMD Architects, Coopworth
Coopworth by FMD Architects is a contemporary interpretation of a country farmhouse nestled in the rural surrounds of Bruny Island, Tasmania.
The property’s sheep, wide-ranging views to the water and mountain ranges beyond, and weathering shacks dotted over the island, provide an ever-changing landscape with which the house converses.
The resulting footprint of the house is consciously constrained to maximise arable land, but with generous interiors facilitated by various gabled, hipped and skillion rooflines. Simple plywood linings and concrete floors draw focus to this ceiling, which features wool sourced from the property, adding to its thermal performance.

Nic Brunsdon, East Fremantle House
East Fremantle House by Nic Brunsdon is a contextually responsive addition to a heritage cottage.
Most important to the project is the space that’s not built – a large northern void – a space for light, sound, and breeze to inhabit. The house traces the void’s edge, providing constant connections to nature.
Once a dark period home with ‘60s additions and asbestos sheds at the rear, the home is now arranged as four interconnected sections: the existing brick cottage, an entry link, a ground floor addition, and first floor addition.
The living room is a ‘garden room’ lined with sliding north-facing doors, allowing the space to cleverly spill outdoors and occupy the full width of the site.

Wowowa, Pony
Pony is an agile alteration and modest addition to a 1960s apricot brick home in Brighton East, Victoria.
Wowowa devised a reworking of the original home, alongside an agile new extension. This extension adopts a simple, linear form that slides against the existing volume to run lengthways down the block. The focal point of this new structure or ‘colonnade’ is the roof, which takes design cues from the nearby beach to feature cladding and construction methodology akin to a boat with a keel, bow and stern.
A dessert-inspired interior colour palette draws on the client’s mid-century furniture, and allows a smiling eye to whimsically dance around the home.

Wiesebrock Architecture, Bellbrae House
The brief of this Bellbrae, Victoria home called for sustainable design measures and a flexible floor plan suitable for regular guests.
Two pavilions were created by Wiesebrock Architecture in response, comprising the primary house and a guest pavilion. In between the two pavilions is a large outdoor deck covered with polycarbonate roofing.
Aesthetically, the new house draws on the couple and architect’s love of old farm sheds. Durable, low-maintenance, corrugated and galvanised steel sheeting features on the exterior, while the warm interior references classic shearing sheds.

Curious Practice, Lambton House
The small 55 square metre footprint of this new, suburban four-bedroom home by Curious Practice maximises landscaped areas on its Newcastle, NSW site.
Carefully considering the unique five-way intersection of mixed residential and commercial buildings it addresses, the house performs simple gestures to maximise its relationship to context, both neighbouring and public.
A step-down in level from entry to living areas creates a seat at garden level and combined with a generous window injects light and air, while engaging with passersby. This public gesture is continued through an extension of the green streetscape through fences and canopies designed for verdant consumption of the building over time.

Austin Maynard Architects, Garden House
By nature of its inner-city Melbourne location and by design, Garden House by Austin Maynard Architects belies its size and scale.
At street-view, the shingled, simple and domestic scale garage appears to be the house in its entirety. Walk down the side pedestrian alleyway however, and the main front door opens up to reveal a much bigger property, comprising four distinct elements appearing as separate buildings. These buildings are ‘invisibly’ connected via mirrored glass corridors, reflective of the property’s well-established garden.
This high-performing, high-tech, inner-city Melbourne oasis produces 100kwh per day and has a 26kwh Tesla battery.
The Design Files + Laminex Design Awards 2021 Residential Architecture award is presented by COLORBOND® steel.
COLORBOND® steel is one of Australia’s most loved building products, producing coated steel products for more than 50 years. Their coating technology offers exceptional performance with resistance to chipping and cracking, creating highly durable roof and wall cladding materials.

Andrew Burges Architects designs Bismarck House to be "continuous garden"
Andrew Burges Architects created Bismarck House holiday home in the Sydney suburb of Bondi to showcase the work of its landscape architect client.
The house, which has been shortlisted in the house interior, residential rebirth, and urban house categories for the Dezeen Awards 2020, was designed for Will Dangar of landscape practice Dangar Barin Smith to be noticeably different from the surrounding residential neighbourhood.
Top: Reused bricks from the existing building form a boundary wall. Above: Bismarck House runs along a laneway
"Bondi is a popular coastal place set within beautiful geography, but marked with an agglomeration of poor quality building stock," Andrew Burges Architects founder Andrew Burges told Dezeeen.
"The idea was that the house would function primarily as a site for holiday rentals, while also demonstrating the capacity of our client's construction and landscape design companies."
A screen in perforated aluminium sheet decorates the exterior
The site is located on a lane that serves shops and cafes on the Bondi Road leading to Bondi Beach, and held a single-storey building that didn't take full advantage of the sun and air.
Andrew Burges Architects kept the front room and porch of the existing house and worked within the envelope of that space, but the rest of the original building was demolished with the bricks cleaned and reused for the new, two-storey construction.
"We were interested in the laneway for its potential for social interaction between the house and lane, and the grittiness, and also the opportunity, given the client makes gardens, to create a footprint that extended the presence of the garden along the length of the laneway," said Burges.
The two-storey house will mainly be used for holiday rentals
The studio worked with the idea of a "continuous garden" as a way of organising and maximising the space, and to place the garden at the heart of the scheme.
In order to create a fluid relationship between the inside and outside, the studio considered both the garden and the building itself as the ground floor of the house.
Indoor spaces and garden were designed to blend together
"Our starting point was to think of the site boundary of the house as the ground level house enclosure," said Burges.
"Glazing and walls form moments within the site boundary that also happen to make thermal and rain enclosures, but these alignments have not been considered as the house perimeter – the site is the perimeter," he added.
Galvanised steel columns and concrete floors were used for the downstairs
This concept influenced the materials for the ground floor, which were chosen to reinforce a robust outdoor character.
"All parts of the ground level were considered as outdoor materials, evident in the tiled kitchen, timber window seat, brick stair, mesh balustrade, face brick and mortar washed walls, raw steel-framed glazing, galvanised steel columns and awnings, and concrete floors," said Burges.
Succulents and cacti that thrive in the sun have been planted on two levels. Photo is by Prue Rusco
The downstairs rooms open up towards the garden and the laneway, while a succulent garden was elevated to protect the rear bedroom on the top floor from the low westerly sun.
"The site was chosen for its north-east aspect and the potential for borrowing light along the northern laneway," Burges explained.
"The building footprint is intentionally restrained in size – to allow garden and light to fold between the lines of enclosure."
A cut-out on the top floor lets light into the kitchen through a skylight
While the materials used on the ground floor were chosen for their natural, raw qualities, the upper level, which houses three bedrooms, was designed to be lighter but more monolithic.
"The exterior is defined by a screen in perforated aluminium sheet – a standard perforated sheet ordered off the shelf in mill finish aluminium," said Burges.
"The sheet was pleated so that the pleat dimension lands on every second rise of the corrugated sheet walling that provides enclosure beneath the screen,"
Windows are set in the curved facade
The undulating shape of the top floor helps let light into the garden below, as well as into the kitchen through a skylight.
The curved wall also means the bedrooms benefit from windows that don't look directly out onto the buildings across the laneway.
Proyalbi plaster in a pale grey was used for the upper floor
Upstairs, the interior is dominated by proyalbi, a fine-set-plaster that has been applied to the walls and ceilings.
Hardwearing concrete floors and galvanised steel handrails were used for the upper level, continuing the theme of combining function and beauty.
The upper floor of the house has three bedrooms in neutral colours. Photo is by Prue Rusco
Andrew Burges Architects' previous projects include another residential Bondi building, featuring pale brickwork and blackened wood and a Sydney warehouse transformed into a "mini city" for kids.
Photography is by Peter Bennetts unless stated otherwise.

Chapter 2: Don't Fear the Reaper
There was a jingle of metal against plastic. A hand held out an old 7-Eleven slurpee cup. The fingers belonging to the hand needed a good scrub in running water, and there was dirt underneath the nails.
The old man who was hunching over had probably seen better days long ago, and that included his worn, tattered clothes. He made his way under the overpass from busy North Broadway. People who were on their way home or wherever else usually passed him by without a glance, but a few dropped whatever change they could find in their pockets, and he always muttered, "Thanks," and "God bless."
He came to a halt twenty feet away from the glass doors of the Bryn Mawr red line stop, under said overpass, and leaned against the brick wall behind him. A smoke break was in order. So, he put the slurpee cup under his armpit—there was already a good amount of coins inside, maybe three buck’s worth—and rummaged in the oversized pockets of his cargo jacket, using his other hand.
Obviously, he had more money than that, which he'd accumulated throughout the day, but he wasn't going to reveal it all if he wanted more. That was not how it was done. Had to show 'em far less than you actually had. A middle-aged man walked by and held out a dollar.
The bum said, like always, "Thanks. God bless," and, in addition, "You have a good night, sir." Then he pocketed the dollar, put a cigarette in his mouth, and prepared to light it with a bic lighter. Only no matter how many times he flicked it, it wouldn't light.
"Hey," he called out to a well-dressed businessman, who stood on the other side of the sidewalk. He looked like he was waiting. "Hey, man, you got a light?"
Cars passed by, honking.
"Hey, man!"
Elijah heard him. He just didn't realize that the homeless man was talking to him. He registered his presence when he heard the shuffling of feet, the jingling of coins, and the musty smell. He looked at the human as if he were an alien.
Then he blinked and saw the cigarette in his hand. The homeless man lifted it and said, "Got a lighter?"
The vampire shifted back slightly. Obviously not because he was afraid, but because the smell of a city street was interesting enough. Elijah wasn't too keen on the new notes, which seemed to be of...general uncleanliness, coupled with the smell of alcohol and whatever else that he didn't want to fathom.
So, Elijah haughtily said, "No. I don't."
The bum deliberately stared at him, not believing him. Putting the cigarette behind his ear, he tilted his head of matted hair and regarded the fancy man. "Got any change then?"
Elijah's gaze darted past him impatiently, to the glass doors, before returning sharply to the begging man. Again. "No. I don't."
The bum's expression was blank. He didn't move.
"Bullshit, man," he said after a moment. Elijah's eyebrows rose. "A guy like you has extra change. Bet a guy like you doesn't even live in this neighborhood. You from the Gold Coast?"
Elijah glared at him now. "Come on, man—" The persistence in the homeless man's gaze stilled all of a sudden. He didn't blink, and Elijah narrowed his own eyes, compelling him.
"You will go now." And an annoyed afterthought, "You're quite lucky I am not my brother."
"Who?" the man uttered. His mouth gaped slightly like a fish. Hypnotized, his head cocked the other way.
"Run along."
Obediently, the homeless man took a step back. Elijah straightened the lapels of his suit jacket even though they didn't need fixing. He didn't watch as the beggar proceeded robotically down the sidewalk, out the other side of the overpass, and into the night.
Elijah had looked up as he felt a rumble in the distance, stirring the air, vibrating beneath his feet through the asphalt. He glanced down at the Patek Philippe on his wrist and said to himself, "On time actually." The watch read ten past nine. The train slowed to a screeching stop so that its passengers could get off and head downstairs to street level.
In 1893, there was no Starbucks on the corner of Bryn Mawr and Winthrop Avenues, and no 7-Eleven or the UPS store further down. No hole-in-the-wall Thai places, or trendy, hipster breakfast joints.
Before 1889, this neighborhood of Edgewater was known to be "the only electric lighted suburb adjacent to Chicago," and was a part of the Lake View Township. Mansions, belonging to the elite, lined the shorefront. Then after 1889, Edgewater became a part of Chicago and quickly rose to the status of being one of the most prestigious communities. So, the homeless man was wrong. Elijah could've been part of this neighborhood, at least long ago.
During the year of the fair, he and his sister Rebekah were invited to this northern part of the city to attend a soiree, which was organized by none other than Marshall Field, who was perhaps the wealthiest man in the world in the 1890s. He was the founder of Marshall Field and Company, the Chicago-based department stores. To say that Rebekah was ecstatic was an understatement, for she loved parties and shopping, but that's a story for later.
Now, Edgewater was gentrified, and many students and young people lived there, with or without children. Renting prices were reasonable enough, and it was within walking distance of the beach. Parking was terrible, particularly in the summer, though that was name of the game in the city. Getting around town was what the El was there for.
The area off of the Bryn Mawr stop was generally safe, but at night, girls and young women usually used common sense so as not to walk alone, or if they did, they had to maintain constant vigilance. This was Chicago, after all.
The train started moving again. It was heading north toward its end stop, Howard. Loyola University was up ahead several blocks, and downtown glittered south in the night, the Loop seven miles away. The beach was just two streets over to the east.
A crowd pushed through those glass doors.
The train obscured Elijah's senses far more than automobiles ever could. He almost lost Liza for a moment, distracted by the grinding of metal that ground on his ears like nails on a chalkboard. He had moved behind one of the underpass's cracking columns so that she wouldn't see him. Then, as the noise from the tracks receded, he hurried out from under the bridge and deftly followed the girl, who'd already made it across Bryn Mawr, intent on turning left, which was north, onto Winthrop.
She was fast, not breaking her stride. The earbuds were still in, but her music was off. The set of her shoulders projected her instinctive caution. Even though she lit another cigarette, and Elijah caught whiffs of the smoke, he was glad to see that the girl was wary. She'd glanced back over her shoulder a few times, as she passed the breakfast place called Nookies, and the residential part of the street began.
Elijah expertly hid in the shadows as he followed her. He had a little over a thousand years to perfect this. One could indeed call it stalking, but he wasn't a pervert tailing some girl, so he most certainly didn't consider this stalking. This was investigating.
But he knew that when he'd finally reveal himself to her, whenever the time was right, there was a great chance of her reaction not being a good one. This he'd have to handle whatever way he could. And this was another reason why Elijah was following the girl alone. Not with any of his siblings.
This block or two of Winthrop mostly had courtyard apartment buildings. There were also a few worker cottages, but there were more classic Chicago graystones, which were either two level or three. Some appeared to be remodeled. Others kept the iconic gray limestone.
Liza, in particular, lived in a two level one, which was right next door to a tall building that used to be a hotel in the '20s. Present day, it was a residential apartment building. Sure, it might've dwarfed Liza's graystone, but her home was very quaint. She lived on the second floor.
Most graystones were very similar. This one had its wide stone steps to the right, leading up to a shared porch, and a wide bow of projecting, round windows to the other side. The first-floor windows were shielded by a small pine tree. The second-floor bay windows were rounded as well, curtains wide open, the light on, and above the porch, there was a balcony, a nice feature that allowed an overlook of the street.
The small front "yard" was fenced in and grew some sort of plant that was supposed to be decorative. The metal gate swung shut behind the girl, and she jogged up the steps.
The lower level was home to an elderly couple who owned the graystone itself. The Masked Singer was seen on the screen of an old television through the branches of pine. After Liza stepped inside into the small foyer, where her landlord's door was to the left of the stairs, she already heard the telltale sound of...paws upstairs.
On the second-floor landing, the door to that balcony above the porch was left again, and her own apartment door was directly ahead. The balcony was technically communal, but the old folks never went up there.
2B, read the metal characters directly above the peephole. The hanging little bell above the apartment number rang when Liza stepped inside her place. The sound of dancing paws grew only more furious with excitement. A roughly eighty-five-pound red Akita Inu assailed her with a half-destroyed teddy bear in his mouth.
A smile cracked across the girl's face, which was covered with a slight sheen of oil in the T-zone area, something that often happened when riding a subway car that was almost full to the brim with people. It might've been in the high fifties during the day, steadily cooling into the forties with the sunset, but subway trains perfectly insulated that cringeworthy BO.
"I'm tired, Ramsey," Liza said to her dog as she shut the door behind her. She hung her keys on one of the two hooks on the wall—on the other nail hung someone else's set—and gave the destroyed teddy bear a halfhearted tug before letting go.
The Akita's curled tail still wagged as he eagerly looked up at the human, his triangular, brown eyes hopeful. Liza shook her head and went past the canine.
Through the small foyer, in the parlor (or living room as they called it nowadays) was a pile of shit in front of the bay windows. Liza sighed, seeing it, and walked further into the apartment. Judging by the lack of smell, Ramsey must've pooped earlier in the day when no one was home.
"Hey, Ollie," she said. There was another girl there.
This girl sat on the dark gray Ikea couch, which stood with its back to the front door. She was watching that show Harlots that was on Hulu. Their television was a decently sized flat-screen, hanging on the wall directly in front of the cheap sectional. Before her, on the coffee table, which was also from Ikea, was a large plate of steak and mashed potatoes. Oh, and don't forget the bowl of chopped tomatoes and cucumbers, sprinkled with feta. For a girl of her petite size, it was hard to imagine that she could eat it all.
This girl responded with a distracted, "Hi."
Liza stepped past the couch, looking back at the headful of thick, wavy dark hair.
Judging by the way she spoke, even by that one syllable in Hi, Olympia Belugin was in a mood. And instead of following Liza through the rest of the apartment, Ramsey dropped the teddy bear and watched her go. But he didn't watch for long. Oh no.
He quickly went around the chaise part of the couch to sit directly before Ollie and the coffee table, and resumed watching her eat (which was what he had been doing before Liza got there) while Ollie kept her eyes glued to the television. In the show, Lucy Wells was at the opera with her mother, who was taking silent bids for her daughter's virginity. It was riveting, clearly.
The dining room was really an extension of the living space, with its own large windows that looked out into the lovely, narrow alley alongside the building. The dining table, which was hardly used, was from (guess?)—Ikea!
The first door on the right was Liza's room, and just as she turned the doorknob, she heard from Ollie: "Oh, yeah, and you forgot to do the dishes from last night. Thanks. Exactly what I need when I come back from work."
Liza closed her eyes and found no energy to offer up an excuse—which was that she had overslept and had to rush to work that morning. Hence the dirty dishes. Hence the poop. Still, she didn't answer Ollie.
She stepped inside her room, switching on the light, and crossed the floor to put her messenger bag onto her bed. The yellow bedspread and light blue walls were a little too obnoxious at the moment. The color choice hadn't been her choice. Rather, the room had been painted by the previous tenants before they had moved into this place a little over a year ago. The color yellow logically was supposed to brighten spirits.
Not so much now.
Leaving the light on, Liza left. The kitchen was in the back, as all kitchens were when graystones were built sometime during the beginning of the 20th century.
Ollie's room was right next door to hers, and their shared bathroom was directly across from both of their doors, between the dining room and kitchen. One of the few bonuses of living in such an old building was the fact that the landlords kept the vintage pedestal sink and the deep tub.
The back entrance, which had been originally used for receiving deliveries, from say, the milkman, was now where Liza often stepped out onto the patio for a cigarette. When Ollie was in better spirits, she too joined. Or she made enough steak for the two of them on their little grill. The lingering aroma from the food stirred the emptiness of her stomach, but Liza wouldn't dare to ask if Ollie would share. Not now.
The street outside was quiet, save for a few neighbors who were more than likely arriving home late and now searched for parking. They made circles around the block. When he'd noticed one of the cars for a third time, Elijah decided to step further into the shadows. He hid partway in the alleyway that separated the graystone from the newer, red-bricked house on the other side.
He was looking up along the corner of the home, that corner of the living room to be exact. There were moans coming from above. They sounded very much like ones that a lady might utter mid coitus. Regardless of who was moaning and then shrieking, he realized after a moment that whatever sexual activities that were going on in the girl's apartment were coming from a television.
After his previous search on the internet, he'd found out that Liza had a roommate. She was supposed to live with another girl. Considering that he still had much to learn about this Elizaveta Belov, he certainly had no idea who the roommate was. He couldn't see much of the apartment at all. He resorted to just listening. But after a moment, he did see Liza's face against the warm beige walls, what he could see of them at least. Mostly his view was of the ceiling and its original crown molding.
The downstairs folk were far too absorbed with figuring out who the masked singer, the rabbit, was to even bother looking out their windows. Plus, their eyesight would've probably been too poor to distinguish the lurker from the moving shadows of the pine.
Having gotten a plastic bag and some clorox wipes, Liza had stepped in front of the bay windows and then ducked down. She was cleaning up Ramsey's mess. Quick about it, she rose a few seconds later, only to disappear again.
Inside the apartment, she lingered behind the couch again. In her hand, she held the plastic bag containing the dog crap. Ollie didn't turn around. She stuffed a forkful of meat into her mouth.
"Did you take the wolfsbane I made?" Liza asked. Her voice was careful. "I know it turned out thick this time…"
Ollie spoke as she chewed. "No' 'et. I'm 'oing 'o 'omorrow."
"Okay," was Liza's reply. Letting out a soft breath, she turned to head back to the kitchen.
Ollie's delayed reply sounded before Liza opened the patio door: "Thanks...for the wolfsbane." It was a reluctant apology from someone who naturally had a hard time apologizing for things, but something about Liza's own tone sounded understanding.
"No problem, Oll." Liza left the plastic bag outside on the patio so it wouldn't stink up the apartment during the night and shut the door behind her.
Below, at the front of the building, Elijah stood very still. Had he heard correctly? Wolfsbane?
He was certainly no expert in mystical herbal remedies, but he knew for a fact that a concoction of wolfsbane was used only in one instance, and that was to subdue, to weaken, a werewolf.
Was that who this second girl was? A wolf?
Next, he heard the sound of clinking china and running water. Dishes. But the sounds were muted because they came from the back. Liza must've been washing said dishes per her friend's request. Although, it had been more like an order that would've come from someone's mother.
"Rams, get away. I'm not sharing," he heard Ollie's voice next.
Then came the sound of paws. He couldn't see this brief interaction, but this is what happened: Ramsey, ever persistent, jumped onto the couch beside Ollie, who turned to face him with unexpected yellow eyes.
There was a moment of silence between them, a stare down, and then the dog finally obeyed. He stepped backward, lowering his head in submission. Ollie said, "Go," and pointed the way.
Rams went, jumping off of the couch and trotting around it, tail a little low. He looked down the way to the other side of the apartment, where he could see Liza standing in front of the sink. The canine was at a loss as to what to do next. The forlorn teddy bear, which was lying where he'd dropped it, was an option.
Maybe. That was until something caught his attention.
His pointed ears turned back, he straightened, his tail went up in a tight curl, and he was moving to the front windows. Akitas rarely barked, only if there was a good reason to. Despite their size, they were far from Goldens or Labs. They were sneaky and very smart, and they didn't do anything without a purpose. So, when Ramsey sensed someone outside, and he released a low, rolling growl, Ollie tore her attention from the television and paused in her chewing, cheeks puffy.
Elijah took a small step back, hearing the dog. Old leaves crinkled underneath a polished shoe, and Ramsey's head peeked above the window frame. The man saw that the animal was very reminiscent of a large fox, or an orange husky, or a red wolf.
"Why are you freaking out, Ramsey?" Elijah heard Ollie ask, suspiciously, too.
Ramsey yowled at the dark. He didn't quite see Elijah, but the vampire had certainly been made. Ollie's face appeared in the window a second later. She too looked out to see who was there, lurking. She scanned the street, then the sidewalk, north and south. The front of the building, the fenced-in yard, if you could call it that.
"Who's out there, Rams? Huh? Who's out there?" A playful note entered her words. Her voice was slightly husky compared to that of Liza's smooth cadence.
Ollie was pretty, her hair darker, thicker, and slightly longer than that of her friend. Her face, rounder, had those slavic cheeks, too. But whereas Liza was fair, Ollie was warmer-toned. Dark, arching eyebrows framed her eyes, which were large and green.
As that green gaze surveyed the front of the building, Elijah deftly snuck away, going unnoticed, even as the dog still ruff'd.
"What's wrong?" he heard Liza call from the kitchen.
"Rams heard something outside," Ollie answered. "It's fine."
Then their feet were moving. Ollie returned to the couch, fell onto it backward. Liza stepped back to the sink. The dog retreated from the window once he sensed the vampire was gone—from the front of the house, at least.
The scandalous TV show was being rewound. It was harder to hear, while the sound of the sink grew louder now. Elijah blended into the darkness, creeping outside of the first-floor patio, looking up at the window of the second-floor kitchen.
Steam rose, fogging up the glass. He could see Liza behind it. Lifting an arm, she wiped her forehead with the back of her forearm. She had those yellow kitchen gloves on. Elijah took two steps back to better see her face. As unnerving as it was that her roommate was an apparent werewolf, he was there for Liza, after all. But what the hell did she have to do with his family? The fact that she'd brought up wolfsbane could've meant a couple of things. He didn't want to jump to conclusions, however. He wanted proof first. The most important thing was to proceed with caution.
Liza's brown gaze was set much like the expression that he'd seen on her face earlier that day, when he'd left the tea shop: pensive, somber. Her brows were drawn slightly, her lips pressed together, far from a smile, but not quite a frown either. She didn't appear to be one of those girls who were quick to smile, or easily amused. She might've been a deep thinker. She looked like something heavy was on her mind. Maybe not. He could've been wrong. This was only what he was assuming as he tried to read her features.
She was putting the dishes by the sink. Once she was finished, she shut the water off and took off her gloves. She hung them over the faucet, but before stepping away, she looked out the window.
Beyond the first and second floor patios, there was a short driveway and a small single-car garage beside it. An old, Ford sedan from the mid 2000s was parked before a much newer silver Mustang.
In front of the garage on a chunk of dead grass, there were a few pieces of patio furniture—nothing special, just two lawn chairs and a glass table. The place needed some sprucing up, but it wasn't too terrible. There was one of those round, unused charcoal grills near the lawn chairs. The whole area was surrounded by a fence, as were most of the backyards of these graystones. At the end of the driveway, on the other side of the gate, was the alley.
There were no milk men nowadays. Only garbage trucks on Tuesdays, and sometimes scavengers with their trunk beds in the evenings on Mondays before. The homeless were known to waddle past with carts as well. And bordering the alley were the above-ground El tracks.
Liza watched the tracks as a train—no, maybe two trains—neared, for the sound was louder than usual. Elijah too looked back, past the garage, and up at the rails beyond the back street. How the hell a person could get used to the noise was beyond him. When he glanced back at Liza, he saw that her attention was riveted on the train line. The rushing trains, going in opposite directions, snapped with electricity and clanged rhythmically against the rails. Yellow windows with silhouettes, which were sitting or standing, blurred past.
Her face was unreadable, almost in the way of Elijah's own natural physiognomy, everything there below the surface, yet all of it hidden. His own face usually obscured his thoughts, leaving most people floundering as they would try to figure him out. Liza was clearly far, far away now. Maybe there was something hypnotic about the sound of the train—because it did something to the girl. He didn't take his attention off of her.
The trains passed each other with a whoosh and sped to the south and north ends of the line. Even as the roaring receded, Liza kept her gaze there for a moment or two longer. Then, her eyes lowered to the yard.
Elijah shifted closer again to the first-floor patio, to make sure she didn't spot him.
There was a clink sound. When Liza had jumped, he tensed. She was turning around, and although Elijah had a harder time seeing her through the window now, he heard the girls.
"Jesus," Liza had gasped.
Ollie had brought in her dirty dishes. Liza obligingly took them and turned on the sink again.
"Sometimes I forget you're not a wolf after I'm around them all day at the daycare," Ollie said with a hint of dark amusement. There was a smirk in her voice, too.
Elijah heard Liza's heart rate go up as she scrubbed her friend's plate, foregoing the gloves this time. He wouldn't blame any human for being taken aback like that. The wolf's heart beat was steady. Of course, it would be. The vampire found himself on edge. He couldn't help it.
"I thought you said that every woman can find her "she-wolf," Liza quipped, sounding bemused. It was a reference to the Shakira song, which Elijah didn't catch.
"Well, yeah. But you know what I mean. You're so jumpy." Ollie laughed, a rougher edge in her throat.
Elijah took hold of one of the wooden balusters of the patio.
"Shut up."
"Can't I tease you? You have something smart to say all the time."
Liza was silent. She certainly wasn't acting sharp-tongued right at that moment. Ollie yanked the fridge open.
Liza's pulse skipped a beat. She turned off the faucet, added Ollie's now-clean dishes and utensils to the dish rack on the counter, and turned around to find the shorter girl chugging out of a plastic bottle of kefir. Liza crossed her arms and leaned against the sink. Ollie wiped her mouth with the back of her hand and gave her a look.
"Oh, don't be so sensitive."
Knowing better than to argue with a wolf, who was feeling the effects of the coming full moon, Liza forced a smile. She hid her face by turning around to get a glass out of a cupboard.
Ollie threw the now-empty kefir bottle into the trash can, which had a secure lid—so the dog couldn't get in. "I'm going to bed. Good night."
"See you in a couple days," Liza bid. Her tone now belied a relief that she couldn't help but feel. Ollie didn't take offense if she even noticed.
"I won't be bitchy then." Ollie's footsteps were already receding down the hall.
Liza was filling her glass with water from the fridge filter. "I know," she said.
However, they needed a break from each other. It was hard living with a friend. And female werwolves were bitchy twice a month, not once. Sometimes their time of the month coincided with the full moon, but not always.
Elijah was calmer but waited still. He heard, "Come on, Rams," as Liza stepped out of the kitchen, the lights going out. Ollie's door, the closest to the kitchen, closed shut.
Liza continued to speak to her dog: "No? You're not coming in? Fine then." The hallway light dimmed next. She stepped inside her own room, but there was no sound of the door closing, which meant she left it open.
But instead of following his owner, Ramsey stepped into the kitchen, not ready to call it a night. His part-time job of security dog wasn't over yet for the day. Elijah heard the growl. Then a scrape of paws at the back door. The vampire took this as his cue to finally leave. So, he vanished into the darkness, around the building, without making the slightest of sounds.
Sensing the reaper's movement, Ramsey ran out of the kitchen and bolted into Liza's room. She gasped as he skidded to the window, putting his paws up on the frame. He barked loudly and his snout pressed against the glass, fogging it up. Having taken off her shirt, in her bra, Liza quickly reached to yank the curtains shut.
Rams stuck his head past the fabric, anyway, and huffed out a low, threatening snarl that must've translated as, "I know you were there, asshole."
"Shut up, Ramses!" Ollie yelled through the wall.

An Architect’s Own Hideaway, Buried In The Tasmanian Bushland
Casa Acton is the home of Archier‘s technical director Josh FitzGerald, which he built himself, by hand. Located in the Hobart suburb of Acton Park, this modest, cabin-like home made from locally sourced building materials is perfectly in sync with its bushy surrounds.

An Ocean-Side Sanctuary Designed To Age Gracefully
This grand beachside home in Ocean Grove represents a confluence of opposing factors. Located on a windswept sand dune overlooking the Barwon bluff on one side, and the Point Lonsdale lighthouse on the other, it is exposed to both the beauty and the intensity of such a rugged beachfront spot.
When designing Cliff House, Auhaus Architecture chose to reflect the rugged location in material expression, opting for raw and natural materials at every opportunity.

An Unconventional ‘Tent House’ In The Noosa Hinterland
This ‘tent house’ by Sparks Architects was inspired by the ultimate ‘gone bush’ activity: camping under the stars. The innovative design facilitates two distinct modes of living – one where the home’s roof and walls are wide open, and the other where the house functions as an insulated box.
Designing and building a tent-like residential structure is a huge and impressive undertaking – so much so that you actually might recognise it from Grand Designs Australia!

A Family Home That Mirrors Nature
Jane and Lloyd Fenn and their children Lillian, 11, Audrey, 10, and Eddie, 6, moved from Melbourne to the Mornington Peninsula with the hopes of better connecting to nature – something they’ve achieved in the design of their beautiful home.
Their family home in Red Hill, Victoria, has been designed in direct response to its sloping, bush block. But rather than flattening the site, the designers decided to lean into its existing conditions, developing a tiered floor plan that naturally distinguishes different areas of the home.  Designed and built by InForm in collaboration with Pleysier Perkins architects, the house is clad with locally-sourced rough sawn timber, and seamlessly blends into its natural surrounds.

This Non-Conventional Holiday Home Is Mostly Underground
Bluff House is located in a landslip zone, meaning the majority of the structure had to be built into the foreshore rather than on top of it. By anchoring bedrooms underground with a cantilevered living domain above, Rob Kennon Architects have mastered this site’s challenging requirements, while maximising the views from an almost entirely subterranean position! Incredible!

This Lorne Home Is A Dream Collaboration Between Two Architects
On a bush block just outside Lorne, Victoria, lies the holiday home of architect Roger Nelson. In collaboration with DREAMER, the original plans for a sprawling 700sqm home were reduced to 220 square metres across two linked but distinct pavilions. Though technically belonging to Roger and his wife Jane, the house has been designed to cater for generations of children and grandkids alike to escape from the city to reconnect with one another and the outdoors.

A Breathtaking Lake House Completely Open To Its Natural Surrounds
Hold onto your hats, this one might just knock the wind out of you! Matthew Woodward Architecture were engaged to create a sturdy but experimental residence atop this windswept 25-acre property overlooking Wallis Lake on the north coast of New South Wales. The awe-inspiring result is a robust dwelling, crafted from rough and raw textures that will weather with time, and blends seamlessly into the rugged surrounds.
The north-facing house opens itself to the elements, utilising sliding glass doors on the lower levels and hydraulic levered timber screens on the upper floor to unfold the residence out onto the property. With bushland at the rear of the property and rolling, unimpeded views down to Lake Wallis, maximum connectivity to the natural surrounds was the central design concern. These are probably the most spectacular views we saw all year!

A Modernist-Inspired Getaway On The Mornington Peninsula
St Andrews Beach is a seldom mentioned slice of Victoria’s Mornington Pensinsula. Wedged between Cape Schanck and Sorrento, the rugged coastline faces Bass Strait rather than the bayside views favoured by the more popular townships on the opposing side of the coastal strip.
Kerryn Nossal and her partner bought their plot of land in the St Andrews dunes in 2000, and proceeded to build the Coastal Luxe beach house over the next 15 years. Enter the property through a landscaped banksia forest and ascend the multi-level house all the way to the top where a the main bedroom suite sits like a nest in the treetops. You can even catch a glimpse of the expansive seaside vista through a 6.5-metre window that runs along the spine of the house. Who could want anything more?!

Living The Regional Dream In Strzelecki, South Gippsland!
The proverb ‘the grass is always greener on the other side’ is totally redundant in the case of Tom and Shelley Banders, whose idyllic country home is nestled in South Gippsland’s famed rolling hills where – literally and figuratively – the grass could not be any greener! The pair moved from Melbourne into their charming 1890s farmhouse with 10ft walls and have never looked back, establishing 70 lineal metres of veggie patches, a stone fruit orchard and citrus grove, with plans to establish coops for chickens and ducks. Shelley makes a strong case for taking the leap to the country:
‘Just go for it! We have never felt so grounded, connected and satisfied, ending our day with a glass of local wine, a bit of dirt under our nails and a belly full of real food. What are you waiting for?’
I honestly don’t know!
