In multiplayer games like Call of Duty and Apex Legends, I see many complaints about SBMM (Skill-Based Matchmaking). The main criticism is that it doesn’t allow strong players to play casually in non-ranked matches because there are already ranked modes for competitive play. However, even in casual modes, SBMM makes them face players of the same skill level, which can be stressful. What’s your opinion on this? How do SBMM algorithms work, and do you think it's reasonable for players colmplainit
Here's the thing - lopsided (blowout) games are a lot more frustrating for the players getting blown out than they are fun for the players winning. They are a net negative experience - there's very little to gain or learn from getting blown out, but a lot of bad vibes that have a significant increase in the number of lesser-skilled players that quit playing the game because they've been blown out repeatedly by higher-skill player groups.
The Call of Duty team actually released a [research white paper] in July of this year about an experiment they ran in Modern Warfare III with a control group and an experimental group with loosened skill-based matchmaking criteria. When they reduced the skill-based matchmaking requirements, 80% of participating players were more likely to quit matches early and 90% of them were statistically less likely to play again. When they ratcheted skill-based matchmaking up so that it played a larger factor in matchmaking, they saw the inverse effect - players quit less and were more likely to play again.
This shouldn't be a huge surprise. While playing against better players usually increases skill level over time, it must be balanced against the frustration of that play experience or players on the losing end won't want to come back for more. From the developer perspective, we want players to keep playing the game so that we can keep paying the bills and making more content. We want the game to be sustainable. Players usually come back for more when they have closer matches.

My brother recently got into Demon Slayer so I wanted to make a kny oc for him since I did it before with both me and my sister and never got around to my brother :)
But I started by refreshing my own design because wow?? It’s been 4 years since I first made my kny insert character and a lot of things are now outdated! Not to mention my art has improved a lot, I hope. More details under the cut!
Meet Ebisu Koharu: youngest of the Ebisu family and physically the weakest. They only barely passed Final Selection by hiding for the entire week and surviving off tips from their older siblings. Nonetheless, they still want to contribute, which is why they hold onto a thick, leather bound book that records every demon they’ve ever met in precise detail, with labeled diagrams and scribbled calculations in the margins of different strengths and weaknesses.
After spending a few years on the job, and properly seeing their data contribute to the successes of other demon slayers, they’ve come a bit more into their own as a competent researcher and fighter, though they still do tend to request paired missions with friends and family to act more as a support role rather than a fighter.
The Ebisu family is one of scholars. The eldest daughter Kaoru is a doctor, and the eldest son Shougen is a chemist. By nature, fighting is not necessarily their strong suit, which is why their family breathing style and techniques are all poison-assisted. Of the three, Koharu is the weakest and most averse to combat— they wield a short half-length blade, with more of a smooth ceremonial hilt and sheath than any practical weapon.
#kny oc#kimetsu no yaiba#demon slayer#it’s so much fun seeing my brother be so late to the party for kny lmao#I love him but his takes are kind of shit ngl.#his character will be absolutely hilarious to do as well#because you better believe I’m going to lean far into how much he simps for giyu#looking for names is so much more fun when I can read some kana and am not using google translate#I found out that the combination of me and my sister’s names form kanari which i will not stop thinking about for ages#four years of improvement and four years of character development! Better character design and research skills#it’s a lot of fun thinking more about details when designing now#I.e. brushes are wildly impractical tools for writing on the go so koharu’s main choice of stationery is an imported fountain pen that cost#a decent amount of their savings#and they wanted their records to last longer so they also invested in a proper leather bound journal (also imported) rather than#a normal string bound book like their normal daily journal. this is also why the books open in different directions#in the event that their fountain pen breaks they Will Cry but they will also commit the details to memory and write them in with a bruh#with a brush after the battle ends

one of the many things that bothers me about goku luck is the fact that they have kenta (a minor) in a penitentiary full of adult convicts. where was the juvenile welfare officer and why are they not doing their job. hope they’re fired
#edit: realised i wrongly used the word penitentiary. sorry abt that. i meant prison#anyone who has heard what prison is like knows how terribly wrong this would go#also was he tried as a minor or did they try him as an adult for his crimes#idc if he’s got advanced hacking skills if a kid can create a virus that can threaten the world in his garage#then i’m sure million-dollar corporations and desperate governments can fund research into an antivirus#idk man it’s freaking ridiculous#like there was no reason to be doing all that#maybe i’m just a believer of restorative justice but#kenta’s clearly a genius. why not a scholarship to a great tech programme and a job with the government#he could do so much good in developing cybersecurity. internationally.#idk it just makes me sad that his whole life was over#and the system didn’t just fail him. it endangered him#either way goku luck could be such a great tool to criticise the criminal justice system#if anyone even CARES#you know i love The Silly but sometimes we need to Get Serious#paradox live#paralive#kenta mikoshiba#goku luck#gokuluck

a great way to combat genAI in the future would be educating kids (and teens and college students and all ppl) on art way more.
#i had art classes growing up but i know a lot of ppl didn't and even less kids get art classes nowadays#we need all kinds of art classes too! music and history and painting and woodshop and drawing and life drawing#i think art history is especially important bc it connects us to our past and shows why art is so important#and all kinds of art classes help kids develop different important skills#like fine motor skills and critical thinking and making choices and noticing details and how to really SEE things rather than just looking#and a lot of art skills like woodworking and ceramics and sewing are all very practical basic adult skills that we should all get to learn#there's reasons arts and crafts and other skill based electives are the first to go and its not just bc they're undervalued#its cause a population that feels capable and confident and skilled and knows how to think critically#is harder to make work shitty jobs for shitty pay#harder to control!#same reason they're banning so many books and trying to make education worse#damn maybe i should learn how to teach better#im already planning to at least try doing a workshop for adults but maybe if i end up liking that#i could work towards being able to teach kids#i feel like teaching kids would be harder cause idk what concepts they do or dont know at whatever age they are#id have to do research and maybe talk to someone who has experience teaching art to kids#but even a simple art class would be beneficial i think#like going outside to draw things in nature maybe#or portrait drawing#or a class on how to make comics or animate on paper to impress their friends lol#i would've loved that!#id have to do that with the help of another teacher maybe#idk#vague future plans#anyway the reason education would help combat ai is cause ppl would learn abt what goes onto making art#all the choices and skills and thought#and they'd be able to more easily see the difference btwn real art and ai images and understand why making art is important

"higher education" is so fucking snobby dude... my distaste for academia and the educational system as a whole is just further amplified
#relic.txt#how are you going to make fun of a student while they present their thesis... to their face?#even if you dislike the student. and think their presentation is shit.#it's just unprofessional and petty#it didn't happen to me but it happened to a classmate and i just got pissed off#the entire comittee made fun of her for the whole duration of her presentation bc it wasn't the greatest thing ever but like#she was working full time for over a year obviously her grades n shit were gonna suffer lol#some people can't exactly afford school#i've never liked school and never will. it's a joke. you don't learn jack shit other than “your worth is only your academic success” which#barely means anything#can barely find jobs after finishing school too#and teachers in my experience have always been snobby assholes#who got bullied growing up and now take it out on students#learn as much as you can ALONE. do research ALONE. develop skills ALONE.#and also. don't feel like you're worthless because you “didn't have the brains to do something sciency” or w/e bullshit#and ended up doing manual work or whatever#that's amazing#everyone's good at their own specific thing#delete later#i'm just so done with school as a whole lol

Love that the visiting researcher wants to show me how to complete the protocol in case she's not able to finish processing all samples before she leaves this weekend since I'm the 2nd most experienced person in the lab to do library preps. I leave the wet lab in 2 weeks 😬
#if need be I can prioritize finishing things up for her while I'm still here#I get not wanting to burden the research scientist in our lab with this task#this situation reminds me of what my bf said about how having wet lab experience will continue to be valuable as technology improves#I definitely want to develop my computational skills but if I don't get much opportunity in my next job then that's ok#this might get personal

It's almost funny how I talked with ppl from school like 'fair warning, lots of people overestimate me because I look like I've got it all sorted and I get good grades but please please listen to me when I say I can't cope' 'ohhh no we're not going to overestimate you!'
Guess what happened?
#Iconic!!!! Iconic the pattern of my life#Literally 'knowing how to learn' + having self insight etc? Makes people think I'm healthy normal functioning#When both skills were developed to try to cope with my inability to function in daily life#Studying? I did research for a long time and got to know myself so I can study efficiently bc I don't have a lot of energy.#Self insight comes from navigating group homes and care all by myself because all my mentors would leave within months#Iconic#Being able to sit in a chair and contemplate things does not equal being able to participate in society 🙃#Unfortunately being on the spectrum + having undiagnosed untreated trauma means i have very little energy#And my ~ compensating by contemplating ~ also takes. Energy.#(Over)thinking to navigate the world is my life lol and I think its okay as long as i can find a place where i can like. Live.#Id like to graduate high school 🤡 start therapy 🤡 reassess after like a year of therapy#To see if i can like. Go to college or get a job i can cope with.

10 Ways to Live a Happier Life
Happiness is often elusive for an unfortunate reason: our brains aren't wired that way. Instead, our brains have evolved to help us survive, protect ourselves, and stay safe. Sure, we have our moments of elation, as well as our periods of contentment and bliss. However, many of us are plagued by persistent negative emotions – we are simply stuck in the "blahs."
How can we bring more joy into our lives? It takes practice, just like anything else, to cultivate ongoing happiness. In some ways, we need to reset our baseline. It won't happen overnight, but here are the top 20 things you can do every day to unlock the secrets to a happier life.
1. Focus on positive thinking.
To find long-term happiness, you must retrain your brain to shift from a negative to a positive mindset. Try the following: Spend one to two minutes focusing on the positive aspects of your life. If you do this three times a day for 45 days, your brain will begin to do it automatically.
2. Rejoice in small victories.
Life is full of ups and downs, but in between we have a lot of little victories that go unnoticed. Take a moment to celebrate these small wins.
Like doing all your daily tasks
3. Strive for a work-life balance.
Work consumes much of our time, but it should not be the only thing we do. It is critical to pursue activities and interests outside of our jobs. Do you have a pastime? Are you spending time with your friends and family? Are you getting enough exercise? Creating balance in your life will reduce stress and provide you with additional opportunities to express yourself and have fun.
4. Exercise mindfulness.
Mindfulness is a type of meditation in which you focus on being intensely aware of what you're sensing and feeling in the moment, without interpretation or judgment. Practicing mindfulness involves breathing methods, guided imagery, and other practices to relax the body and mind and help reduce stress.
5. Be creative.
The creative process is the evolution of an idea into its final form through a progression of thoughts and actions. The creative process involves critical thinking and problem-solving skills. From songwriters to television producers, creative individuals generally go through five steps to bring their ideas to fruition—preparation, incubation, illumination, evaluation, and verification. These stages were first articulated by Graham Wallas, a social psychologist and co-founder of the London School of Economics who outlined the primary stages of the creative process in his 1926 book on creativity called The Art of Thought.
6. Do what you love.
It's difficult to maintain overall happiness if you despise your job. Don't waste your best years in a job that isn't fun, even if it pays the bills. What piques your interest? What are your true interests? Focus on developing a career that motivates you and provides you with a high level of satisfaction, and your happiness mindset will skyrocket.
7. Live in the moment.
Yes, living in the moment is good. Some think that living in the moment is all about spontaneity and living life to the fullest. That’s only one perception. Living in the moment is about experiencing the world around you as it happens without injecting thought into it. The benefit of living in the moment is that there’s no stress. Stress comes from thinking. However, when we live in the present, we are free of the judgment of thoughts, allowing us to experience inner peace. There’s a sense of calm in living in the moment making life exciting, beautiful, and free.
8. Give back.
Be giving with both your time and your money. Donate to those in need. Give to those you care about. Those who give back exhibit selflessness and humanitarianism. Those who are generous with their money tend to be in good health, possibly because giving has a feel-good effect that reduces blood pressure and stress.
9. Surprise yourself.
It's difficult to be happy if you're bored or dissatisfied with your life. Feeling stimulated, interested, and a little surprised by life is part of feeling happy. So, push yourself to achieve goals that are outside of your comfort zone. Place yourself in unfamiliar or unexpected situations. Make goals for yourself and work hard to achieve them. And don't forget to have fun!
10. Stop worrying.
Constantly worrying about everything leads to toxic anxiety, a state in which your mind is consumed by negative, spiraling thoughts. Worries plague your mind, making you fearful and apprehensive about things over which you frequently have no control. We sometimes believe that if we worry enough, we will be able to prevent bad things from happening. But the truth is that when you're consumed by worry, you can't experience joy or even contentment.
