hi, i love your writing! could i request something where jamie and reader are dating and jamie starts introducing them to the important people in his life, like roy, keeley, the richmond boys, etc. and each time they get introduced to someone new, whenever jamie steps away, they basically get some variation of the 'you better not hurt him' talk, and when jamie finds out he's worried that reader is gunna be offended or upset but they reassure him that it's fine, they think it's cute that everyone's so protective of him and that it's nice to see him have so many people care about him
Sorry this took FOREVER. Here it is!
Tumblr media
the way it goes
It has been exactly twenty-one days since Jamie asked you out on a proper date, and you’re of the opinion that life can’t get much better than this. You’ve only met two of his teammates so far, (Isaac because he’s one of Jamie’s good friends and Richard because you ran into him while shopping) and honestly, they aren’t what you expected at all.
They’re kind and they seem to genuinely like working together.
(It’s a little funny to call football “work.”)
Isaac tells Jamie to bring you next time they all hang out, and reminds him to buy more juice packs than last time so they don’t run out again.
Turns out the next “hang out,” is a night at Isaac’s, and the whole team is there with various partners and spouses. There’s a strict sweatpants-only drsesscode, and pretty much everyone is in clearly expensive matching sets. You’re grateful that Jamie shrunk a brand-new deep green set the other week, because you didn’t have time to go out and buy something new/not ratty.
There are tables of board games, a pile of snacks, and even a bar. Jamie drags you over so he can get “proper buzzed,” and requests something incredibly complicated from Beard, who appears to be the only coach present.
“Babe,” Jamie says, “you good here? I’m gonna get some food.”
You nod and watch him weave through groups of people. You lean against the bar and wait for Jamie’s drink.
“So,” says Beard, “you’re Jamie’s girlfriend.
You nod. “Yeah, I am. I’ve known him for ages, though. Since I was in uni. Always thought he was just some prick footballer trying to score, if you know what I mean.”
Beard chuckles. “I get it. He’s a bit of an asshole sometimes.”
You grin. “He’s my asshole.”
Beard slides you Jamie’s drink but before he completely lets it go, he says, “Hey.”
His voice has lost its jocularity, so you look up to meet his (very intense, slightly terrifying) eyes.
“Jamie doesn’t need his heart broken. He may have been a giant prick, but he’s different now. He’s not the kind of guy you can just screw and move on from.”
Your mouth has gone a little dry, so you just nod. Right then. You turn to go find Jamie and hope he won’t mind if you take a sip of his drink. You’re planning on staying sober tonight, so that one sip is going to have to get you through till the end.
It wouldn’t be the first time someone’s told you to be careful with Jamie. The first time was actually Roy’s niece, Phoebe. Jamie was babysitting and he asked you to come along, so while he was paying for ice creams Phoebe tugged your arm so you’d get down to her level and said, “If you make him cry, they’ll never find you again.”
You had looked at her in shock while she matter-of-factly stated, “My Uncle Roy’s been teaching me things.”
She said the word things far too ominously for an eight year old, but then Jamie came back and she was all smiles again.
You got a similar, equally threatening talk from Phoebe’s mum, and then from Roy, and then Roy’s girlfriend Keeley.
Variations of the “break him and I’ll break you” talk had begun to trickle in whenever you’d pick up Jamie from Nelson Road. The tone ranged from Sam’s vaguely threatening, “We all love Jamie very much. We’re incredibly protective of him,” to Jan Maas’s blunt, “If you break his heart, you will never find another date on this entire continent.
Even Ted had a comment, which was more along the lines of, Jamie’s a big softie, he doesn’t need some to play him right now, he needs a real supporter. Each time, you assured them that you weren’t going to hurt him. You didn’t ask why they thought you would be the one doing the hurting when he was the one with the reputation.
Because you are fully aware of his reputation. You hadn’t seen Lust Conquers All, but you’d seen enough clips to piece together exactly how it went. And you’d seen the details of his cheating scandals all over the papers. And dealt with him firsthand while in uni. So yeah, Jamie’s past prick-ish behavior is not a mystery to you.
You find it endearing that so many people love him enough to protect him. It’s a good sign, you think.
You find Jamie carefully stacking various snacks on a tiny, tiny plate. His face lights up when you come into view.
“Oh good,” he says. “Extra hands.” He grabs his drink with one hand and gives you the plate with the other. He starts piling on something flaky and slightly green.
“Isaac’s girlfriend makes these fucking pistachio things, and they always go way too fast. Gotta eat them while you can,” he says while creating an engineering marvel.
“Glad you like ‘em, bruv,” comes Isaac’s voice from behind you. You jump a little, and the plate wobbles.
You turn to see Isaac with an absolutely gorgeous woman on his arm.
“I’m Stella,” she says. “It’s wonderful to meet you. We’ll have to have you two over for a real dinner.”
Jamie and Isaac quickly become engrossed in a serious discussion about football tactics, with Jamie downing his drink and then taking the plate of food from you. He was right, those pistachio things are amazing.
You chat with Stella for a little bit and learn she’s the face of a modeling agency and met Isaac during some football/branding thing.
“He was the only one during the entire shoot who made sure I was drinking enough water,” she laughs. “Who knew the way to my heart was through proper hydration?”
You talk a little longer before Jamie’s arm is snaking around your waist to whisk you off to see Dani. It goes like that for a little while until you finally settle down at one of the game tables. It’s a card game involving a lot of yelling and pointing fingers.
The house is noisy and cozy, filled to the brim with people who are just comfortable around each other, and you think you’ve never experienced something like this in your whole life.
Jamie on the other hand, is yawning a little bit. His hand, which had been on your knee tracing squiggly patterns, is starting to slow down so you put yours on top of his and whisper, “You about ready to go?”
Jamie nods and presses a kiss to the side of your head.
“Got fucking extra training tomorrow,” he quietly laments.
You get up to leave and Jamie follows suit with a very loud pronouncement that he’d rather be somewhere private, much to the amusement of the Greyhounds who begin to hoot and whistle. You roll your eyes and smack his butt on the way out.
Forty-five minutes later, Isaac’s phone dings with a photo of Jamie in a pink robe and green face mask, hair pulled back in an equally pink and fluffy headband. He’s lying on your bed and he can see the tv screen playing Notting Hill. You’ve typed, Someplace private, my ass, and Isaac just shakes his head and grins. Fucking Jamie. Prick on the outside, softie on the inside.
You better not break his heart, he writes.
HAH comes your reply a moment later. Not a chance.
“Babe, look,” you say handing Jamie your phone. “I’ve collected the whole set.”
Jamie reads your text thread then looks up at you in confusion. “What d’you mean?”
“Isaac is the only one who hasn’t like, threatened me or something if I hurt you,” you reply.
The tips of Jamie’s ears turn red. “What do you mean, the only one?” he asks. “Like, the team?”
You shake your head. “Oh no. I mean, yes, the whole team, but like pretty much everyone who works at Nelson Road.”
Jamie’s eyes widen as you begin to list people on your fingers. “Alright, so obviously the Greyhounds, plus all the coaches, Keeley, Rebecca, Higgins, Trent, Samantha at the front desk, Gary, Phoebe and her mum, Will-” you pause. “Should I keep going?”
Jamie groans. “Fucking hell. I’m sorry. They’re all twats, except Phoebe. I swear, they’re not always like that. I’ll talk to them and make ‘em leave you alone.”
“No! You can’t let them know that you know! And…” you hesitate, “I thought it was kind of sweet. Like a green flag, you know? They all like you enough to make sure that you’ll be ok, and they want me to know I have something special. Of course, I already knew that,” you continue, “but it’s nice confirmation.”
Oh. That’s new.
Jamie’s quiet for way too long so you look over at him. “Babe, are you crying?”
“No,” he says, choked up. “Face mask got in my fuckin’ eye.”
“It’s dried solid, babe.”
“Fine,” he says, “I might be a little. But you can’t tell anyone, especially not Ted, because then he’ll talk to me about feelings and shit, and I’d rather eat ten fucking scones than that.”
You laugh and snuggle into his side. There aren’t going to be any heartbreaks here, not if you can help it. You’re both planning on keeping the other around for the rest of your lives.

In The Static | Ted Lasso
Tumblr media
Pairing: Ted Lasso x reader (no y/n) Wordcount: 2.1k Warnings: panic attack/talks of panic attacks, vague mentions of trauma. That's about it I think, it's a touch angst and hurt/comfort I suppose. Fluff. Summary: Ted thought he was past his panic attacks until he encounters another, and you follow him to make sure he's okay. A/N: "now jay" you might be saying "wasn't the last thing you posted smut almost a year ago?" and the answer is yes. But i've recently become insanely attached to Ted Lasso, and I dipped my toe into writing more than a wip. SO here's my middle aged white man of the month. Enjoy :)
Tumblr media
“REFEREE!!!” Keeley stands with a force that causes her to latch onto your arm to keep from falling forward. It continues to astound you that for such a tiny lady, she really contains an insane amount of spunk. One of the opposing team’s men had just slid Sam’s legs out from under himself, causing him to land hard on his shoulder. The game had been a rough one so far, more aggressive and bitter than most. Richmond had been respectful at first (as per usual) but the second their opponents had started playing violent and dirty, that changed.
Roy and Beard were obviously shouting and pointing angrily, though you couldn’t make out what they were saying from your seat in the box. Ted, however, was standing stiffly with his balled fists shoved into the pockets of his Richmond zip-up. You can feel that something is off. Even if you can’t see his face, you know him well enough to read his body language. There’s mere minutes left in the game and the teams are tied.
Rebecca is already standing and gathering her belongings to head back in, gesturing for the lot of you to follow. That’s exactly what you begin to do before the crowd goes ape-shit, jumping from their seats and screaming so loud it makes your head thrum.
“ROJAS INTERCEPTS THE KICK AND PASSES TO TARTT AND JUST LIKE THAT-”
You turn just in time to watch Jamie kick the ball into the net, the stadium erupting in cheers that shake the ground.
“AFC RICHMOND TAKES ANOTHER VICTORY 2-1 IN A SHOCKING LAST SECOND SCORE”
Keeley, Higgins, and Rebecca rejoice, grabbing at each other in shock. Placing your fingers between your lips you let out a piercing whistle, jumping up and down as thousands of chants echo. You look down to your coaches, expecting to see all three soaking in the sweet relief of not gaining another loss. Instead, you see Ted darting for the locker room, head down with his phone held two inches from his face. It was obvious to you that he was trying to use it as a cover.
“I’ll meet back with you guys later, I’ve gotta check something real quick.”
They smile and wave you off, relishing in the buzzing excitement clearly felt throughout the facility. As much as you wish you could join them in celebration, you were pretty sure Ted needed you more. So you slip through the small crowds with ease, having much practice during your time with Richmond, taking the back staircase to the locker room hallway.
At first you check his office, finding only his jacket laying on the floor. The second spot you search is the right one, opening the door to darkness. You almost turn and leave but a staggered breath gives him away.
“Ted?” you whisper, stepping into the boot room and closing the door gently. He sniffles almost silently and hums in response, curling in on himself when the lights flicker on at your touch.. You’ve never seen him look so small before, his entire body condensed into half of his height in the corner of the room, the sight moving you to shut the lights back off for his sake.
“Hey,” you murmur softly, walking over to kneel in front of him. He has his head placed between his knees, hands on the back of head with his fingers intertwined tightly. As much as you know of his panic attacks, you’ve never been present for one. Something tells you he tends to keep it that way with everyone around him.
However, you’re well versed with them yourself.
“I’m gonna sit beside you, but I won’t touch you unless you say it’s okay.”
You lower yourself onto the ground, the floor cold beneath your already freezing ass. England's weather was not kind to the warm blooded. Ted doesn’t lift his head all the way, simply angles it towards you just enough for an eye to peek out from behind his arm. He looks at you with the gaze of a wounded puppy, eyes red and wet, smeared with warm tears.
The silence that follows is deafening, a faint ringing the only thing you hear. Ted looks like he wants to say something, but thinks better of it. It’s not like you can blame him. The last time he opened up to someone he considered close about his panic attacks, it ended up plastered on every magazine and tabloid across the country. Trust within himself and others had been fractured- not broken. No one could ever betray Coach Lasso enough to break that within him, it was fundamental to who he was as a person.
After a few more minutes of silence his foot slides over to yours, just barely nudging it. He lifts his head and sniffles, using his sleeve to wipe the mix of tears and snot off his face.
“I want to tell you about it, I do. I’m just… stuck. Feels like if I tell you, it’ll be too much,” he murmurs, keeping his foot pressed to yours.
“I understand, Ted,” you whisper. “I started having panic attacks before I was even a teenager. I’d been through things- rough things -and they plagued me for years.” He begins to unfurl himself, listening intently to every word you say, the blatant honesty and vulnerability easing his anxiety. “It took me a while to open up to anyone about them, let alone a therapist. I spent so long trying to hide them, that when I finally did get help I felt like a fake.”
Ted adjusts himself to sit up straighter, shimmying closer so your shoulders touch. You can tell he’s trying to be inconspicuous about it, but the man is known to be anything but subtle.  Outside you can hear the boys begin filing into the hallway, headed for the locker room surely for some type of victory activity. Their shadows dance across the wall in the darkened boot room, slashed into segments by the blinds slanted slightly open. Both of you seemed to have held your breaths as they passed, because as soon as they’re gone there’s a simultaneous exhale of relief.
An amused breath comes from Ted, palm pressing from the corner of his eye to the tip of his cheekbone to wipe away the stray tears. He knocks his knee against yours and dares to glance at you, opening up enough to make eye contact. Here in this room, he looks more human than you think you’ve ever seen him. For the most part he keeps his mood insanely optimistic, tending to care more about others happiness than his own. It gave him an almost otherworldly bounce to his step and light to his eyes.
But now that he’s sat no more than two inches in front of you with puffy eyes and a chewed lip, Ted is just… a broken man.
“You’ll never be too much, Ted. It’s normal to feel stuck, and it’s okay to not be able to talk about it yet.” His eyes flick to your hand when you lift it towards him, a lifeline of trust, openness in the form of warm skin and an upward facing palm. Internal conflict tugs at his lungs, his breath hitching as he weighs his options for all of five seconds before taking your hand. You are someone Ted knows he can always find solace in.
Someone who he could spot in a crowd of thousands, someone who he will always seek out.
His other hand reaches to pat the top of yours, rubbing his thumb against your skin in soothing circles. A shuddered breath begins to pass his lips, but he smothers it to ashes with the cool press of a kiss to your wrist.
Humming amusedly at the feeling of his mustache tickling your skin, you lean your head on his shoulder, moving slightly as they lift with the intake of air into his lungs. “I suppose you’re right. I just feel bad that I haven’t spoken to you ‘bout it,” he tsk’s softly to himself, carefully navigating his brain for the right words.
“I was fine out there, y’know? I’ve been doin’ better, Sharon’s helped a lot. But it just got so loud, and everything felt out of my control- out of any of our boys’ control and I- I just couldn’t breathe. Tunnel vision, boom, just like that.”
You whisper encouragements softly under your breath, murmurs of ‘it’s okay’ and ‘you can keep going’ pushing him gently in the right direction. Voices can be heard from the locker room, loud cheering and chanting from the team acting as muffled background noise for Ted’s moment of vulnerability.
“After everything that happened with Nate, I learned to mask it a bit better I guess. That’s the fancy word Doc told me about,” the corner of his lips quirks up “I figured I’d be okay in here for a bit anyway, then you walked in.” Your brows furrow and you pull away from his shoulder, opening your mouth to apologize for intruding but he beats you to it.
“No, no, that sounded different than I meant. I am very glad that you found me here. I needed you even if I didn’t know it,” he traces the details of your face with his eyes, not stopping you when you move your head back down to his shoulder.
“I think you’ve worked on it so much quicker than you realize, Ted. It wasn’t that long ago, yeah? Healing and improving takes time, and it’s okay that it takes time. I certainly took my time,” you muse, channeling your own therapist’s word. “But I think it’s right on par with who you are, who I know you to be, that you got on it as fast as you did. Even if it was begrudgingly at first.”
“Yeah, Doc definitely had her work cut out.”
You laugh, normally at first but then Ted snorts and you both lose it, bodies bumping against each other with the shakes that come with post-meltdown laughs. Soon enough you’re both wiping away tears of a different variety, the air in the room much lighter than before. You take that moment to push yourself up and off the floor, lending a hand to Ted to pull him up.
“I am immensely proud of you, Coach Lasso. So is the team. You have a very large family backing you up, as unorthodox as said family is.” You take one step closer, hand still holding onto his, pressed between your bodies. Taking your free hand, you hold the side of his face and lean in to kiss his cheek, thumb stroking his jaw.
Ted presses into your lips, chasing your touch even when you turn to the door. Twisting the knob open you find Will standing there, boots tied by their laces hanging over his shoulder, hand outreached to grab the now absent handle.
He blinks at the two of you for a second, gaze one of vague shock, before curling his lips in an embarrassed smile and stepping out of the way.
“Not a word, Will,” you sing-song when he opens his mouth, pulling Ted down the hall to stand outside of the locker room door.
You can hear Roy in the middle of a somehow happy/angry sounding congratulation speech that only he is capable of, grinning and turning to face your Coach once more. “Now, get your butt in there and relish in the sweet taste of winning.”
“I mean, relish is pretty tasty-”
“Ted.”
“Yep,” Ted takes a deep breath and nods, squeezing your hand “you coming in with me?”
“I don’t want to intrude on your moment, Coach.”
He rolls his eyes exaggeratedly and pushes the door open, dragging you with him. The boys’ faces light up, immediately rushing to storm him, all reaching to touch him and jumping up and down. Their team song buzzing and bouncing along with them.
“WE’RE RICHMOND TILL WE DIE, WE’RE RICHMOND TILL WE DIE, WE KNOW WE ARE, WE’RE SURE WE ARE, WE’RE RICHMOND TILL WE DIE”
You slide past the group, safely reaching Roy and Beard without your feet being stomped on. The smile on your face is one of pure joy and contentment, not faltering when Beard slides to your side, bumping your elbow.
“Thanks,” he speaks, nodding towards Ted. It’s easy to know what he means immediately, always one to be of few words.
“No need to thank me,” you reply easily, watching your family bond even more “it’s what we do.”

Andrew Minyard hates exy. Anyone on the Seahawks can see that. You could be in the middle of a conversation with him, but as soon as the word ‘exy’ is dropped, he will leave like you weren’t just talking.
He seems to have a silent agreement with the coaches to block out at least 75% of shots thrown on him, however it is not uncommon for him to sit down in the goal box after that percentage is reached, only to stand again when the percentage drops back down.
The only time that he’s seen to give half a shit is when he’s facing Neil Josten and Kevin Day from the Denver Eagles. Whenever they are on court, Minyard tries his danmedest to make sure they do not score, even going as far as directing the backliners that are meant to protect him.
Matthew Boyd is all too happy to take his suggestions, but even the two best strikers in exy struggle against Boyd without Andrew’s help.
So the team knows that Andrew hates exy, with a few exceptions.
Today is one of those exceptions.
They’re in the third quarter of the game and the Eagles are losing by four points. Neither Josten or Day are on court, having played the first and second quarters, and Andrew played the first half, so he won’t go back in. Almost a guaranteed win with Boyd playing second half.
What was unexpected was the little spat between Day and Josten across the court. Day was waving his arms animatedly and gesturing to the Seahawks side and Josten stood there quietly seething.
After a few minutes of Day practically tearing into Josten, Josten said one word that made Day go mute, taking a step backwards. Minyard took a walk around the court.
“Minyard! Come back here!” Coach Limmens yelled. Andrew ignored him.
Altrez watched the exchange, having been a Fox fan himself, their weird dynamic always intrigued him.
Andrew made it over to the Eagle’s side and seemed to start up another verbal fight with Day, Josten, and the Eagle’s coach. It wasn’t long before it was over and Josten was entering the court.
As soon as the court door closed, Andrew punched the Eagle’s coach in the face.
Andrew stalked his way back over to their side and immediately picked up his pads. “I’m going in Coach.”
“The hell you are. Jamie’s barely been able to play.” Coach Limmens said, dismissing Andrew completely.
“If you don’t put me in, right now, then Johnson’s going to get hurt. Josten’s on a mission and he’s too stubborn to listen to reason.”
“And you’re the voice of reason.” Limmens scoffed.
“No, that’s The Queen,” Minyard said jabbing a thumb towards where Kevin Day stood across the court. “I’m what’s standing between Josten and your team.”
“Right, I’ll take that into consideration. Sit down.” Limmens said.
Altrez could feel the rage coming off of Andrew, but he ultimately shrugged.
“Good Luck, Johnson. Hope you have good health insurance.” Andrew said sitting down next to Altrez.
Not 30 seconds after the play started, Josten got the ball, gave a nasty check to Boyd—weren’t they friends?—and made it towards the goal. He swung and Jamie dove out of the way, not even trying to block the goal.
The crack of the ball against he plexiglass wall was felt in the floorboards.
Boyd scrambled off the floor and made it towards the striker. Josten blew him off and went back to get into position for the next play.
For a scary moment, Matthew Boyd looked directly at him. No, not at him, at Minyard. All Andrew did was look at Coach Limmens.
Boyd can apparently read minds because he ran to the door and asked coach to put Andrew in, if not, Jamie was going to get hurt.
Coach finally relented and Andrew went out on the court.
Things happened faster than they probably should have.
Josten got the ball. Josten bypassed Boyd with some crazy footwork. Andrew left the goalie box and met him in the middle, hitting Josten’s racket against his own before pushing Josten backwards.
Rise. Repeat.
Josten never being able to get a shot off, and both teams growing increasingly frustrated.
This time Hendricks, the second Seahawks backliner, got to Josten before Andrew, hitting him down with a definitely illegal check. Josten went down… and did not get back up.
Then the fight broke out. Team against team letting their frustrations out as refs tried to break them up.
Minyard and Boyd fought together to get to player on the ground but didn’t seem interested in anything else.
By the time the refs got everything under control and players cleared out. Andrew was leaning over Josten with Day on the other side of the glass where the boy laid, and Matt stood guard making sure no one got too close.
By the time everything was said and done, Altrez was fairly certain that the bets he made on the Minyard-Josten rivalry were going to be paying out soon.

Cutting Edge Master List
Tumblr media
Returning to Denver after Christmas, you spent most of your time at the rink after practice working on polishing your own skating again. You had been informed that all skating coaches would be performing at the upcoming NHL All-Stars weekend, and every figure skater had been sent music to choreograph a routine to. Luckily for you, choreography was one of your strong points. You had always loved putting your own routines together, and this was no exception. You had been sent the song CHAMPION by Bishop Briggs and though you loved the song, you knew your routine had to be flawless to skate to it. You were the reigning Olympic champion after all. Nate would stay most of the time with you, trying his best to be helpful and give you his opinion when you asked for it. He admittedly did not know much about figure skating though and usually just told you everything looked great, even when you knew it probably wasn’t. You appreciated his support though none the less.
Two weeks before the All-Star break was set, you found yourself traveling to Dallas as the boys had a game against the Stars. Along with the Stars came the one figure skater you could live without ever dealing with again, Ashley Wagner. Beside Nate, no one knew the animosity that was between the two of you, and you were hoping to keep it that way. You didn’t need to worry the team with a petty feud between two rival figure skaters.
You were staring out the window of the plane when you felt someone sit down next to you. Turning, you saw Nate settling into the seat as he gave you a questioning look. “You okay?” he asked. He knew you weren’t looking forward seeing Ashley, and was not sure what this new environment would bring out. You smiled and nodded, opening your book again to distract you.
Nate was worried about you. He had been watching you stress yourself out over putting together a perfect routine for the All-Stars, not to mention helping Jeremy put his together over multiple facetimes. Apparently, you were the one to come to with routine questions. He thought it was amazing, how you could take a song and within two days have a mostly completed routine laid out, he would never be that creative. But between coaching, working on your skating, and running to dress fittings at a shop you found in Denver, he had never seen you look so worn out. Nate was worried that if Ashley pushed a button correctly, you would snap. Your smile may be able to fool everyone else, but Nate had been paying attention over the two months you had been together and was starting to be able to read you like a book. Though it was comforting to you that he knew how you were feeling without even saying it; it also put you on edge. You were used to concealing your feelings behind a smile, and with Nate you couldn’t anymore.
The team landed in Dallas the evening before their game, and you enjoyed dinner with them before heading to your hotel room. You were just crawling into bed with the cooking channel on when there was a knock at your door. Opening it, Nate stepped in quickly and shut the door behind him. “What are you doing here?” you asked. When you traveled, the two of you didn’t spend time in each other’s rooms unless someone else was around to prevent any suspicion.
“No one saw me, we’re fine,” he said, placing a soft kiss on you lips. He grabbed your hand and pulled you over to the bed, getting in on his side as you did the same. “I won’t stay long,” he said gently as you rested your head on his chest. His arm that was around you started drawing absent minded figures on your waist underneath your shirt, as his other hand held yours. “I’ll leave early before anyone should be up,” he said into your hair as you both drifted off.
Around 5am, you heard Nate’s alarm go off and felt him get out of bed. He chuckled as you mumbled incoherently and deftly reached for him. “Go back to sleep,” he whispered, placing a kiss on your forehead. You sleepily watched him walk to the door and peak his head out, giggling at his large figure trying to be sneaky as he made his way out.
~ ~ ~
This was not happening. This wasn’t supposed to happen. Who does interviews before anything happens! You absentmindedly grabbed the figure skate charm on your necklace and bit your lip. You had just been told that you would be doing a pre-game interview. That wasn’t what was bothering you though. What was bothering you was that you would be doing the interview with Ashley. You knew someone had happened across your not so friendly history and planned this because you have never done an interview with any of the other skating coaches.
You were ushered to the area and sat down in front of a microphone when you were announced. Ashley walked in after, smiling brightly at you. You returned it, quickly snapping into performance mode. At first the questions were fine; how did you like being with your team, how were things going, did you miss skating yourself. Then the question came of how do you think your team will do in the game tonight. Ashley, being asked first, put on a brilliant smile that made you want to role your eyes. God she was so fake. “I think we’ll do great! I know how Y/N skates and I have prepared them for it. The Stars are a great team so we shouldn’t have a problem.” You kept your smile light, trying your best not to roll your eyes at her. The same question was then directed to you.
“I believe that the team is prepared. Similar to what Ashley said, I know how she skates and it should be a good game,” you answered. You heard Ashley snicker quietly and you had to bite your tongue. This was not the time or place to lose your temper on her. After a few more questions, you were asked to take a picture together. You had been fiddling with your necklace and didn’t pay any attention to it until you realized Ashley was looking at it.
“That’s new. Why is there a 29 on it?” she asked. You froze, but quickly recovered and turned the charm back around.
“It’s the maker of the charm,” you tried to shrug off. As you walked out of the room of the interview, Ashley followed.
“I’ve never heard of them. Where can I order one?” she pestered.
“It’s this little boutique in Denver. They don’t have a website,” you said off the top of your head.
“Well that’s too bad. Maybe you can take me to this 29 store the next time we’re in Denver?”
“Of course.” You both faked a smile at each other as you got to the hallway leading to the locker rooms. Unfortunately for you, Nate had stepped outside to see where you were. The team had seen the interview and you were taking a little long to get back. He volunteered to make sure you weren’t lost. Ashley didn’t miss him.
“What a coincidence, 29 looks like he’s looking for you,” she smirked, leaving for the Stars locker room. You walked over to Nate and started to push him back into the locker room. To say he was slightly confused was an understatement.
It was late in the third period, the score tied 1-1. The game had been highly physical, and you couldn’t help but be on edge. You were standing on the bench when the final buzzard went off, and the game was pushed into overtime. The game became even more physical if that was even possible, and you jumped as Perry checked Cale into the boards in front of you. A time out was called by the Stars, and you glanced briefly over to their bench. As you did, you saw Ashley say something to Jamie Benn, and he smirked looking your way. You saw him then eye Nate, and you had a bad feeling about it. Watching as Benn skated over to Nate, you could tell he was saying something. Nate tried his best to ignore the left winger, and you wish you could hear what was being said. The puck dropped, and as quickly as it hit the ice, gloves were also falling. You watched as Nate and Benn went at it, wanting to hide behind your hands but also not being able to look away. Without notice, you grabbed onto Tyson’s arm as he was the player you were standing behind. The bench was yelling, the crowd was cheering, and you didn’t know what to do. Watching hockey fights on tv or from the stands was one thing; but watching from the bench as the player you were dating was duking it out with another had you frozen in place.
To your relief, you saw Benn hit the ice with Nate on top and the refs scrambled to separate them. What you weren’t prepared for though was seeing Nate with a cut at his eyebrow, blood gushing from it. You unintentionally squeezed Tyson’s arm, and he turned back to you. “He’s fine Y/N,” he spoke lightly, patting your hand with his glove. Looking at him, you nodded and tried to compose yourself. Your first instinct was to run to Nate and see if he was alright, but you knew you couldn’t do that. All you could do was watch as he was escorted off the ice, his penalty longer than the amount of time left in the game. Benn had a bloody nose, and what looked like a busted lip, but that didn’t stop him from smirking over at you. You watched as Ashley tried to hide a laugh, and you were thankful that the game was about to resume or else you may have yelled something you shouldn’t. Unfortunately, a man down with Nate off the ice, the Stars scored first, effectively winning the game.
You were waiting outside the medical room wanting to see Nate as the Avs started to spill out of the locker room and head for the bus. You were in your own head, blaming yourself for the loss when you heard someone walk up to you. Looking up, you saw Tyson with a concerned look on his face. “You know he’s fine right? They probably just have to stitch up his eyebrow if anything,” he said, trying to judge your reaction.
“I feel like it’s my fault,” you whispered, tears starting to blur your vison.
“What do you mean? None of this is your fault Coach,” Tyson responded, confused as to why you were blaming yourself.
“I think he got in the fight because of me; because stupid Ashley can’t keep her mouth shut. And then we lost because we were a man down and it’s all my fault,” you swiped at a pesky tear that had fallen. Tyson wasn’t sure what to do, not entirely understanding why you were taking the loss so personally. They had lost a few times before and he didn’t think you had been this effected by it.
“You’re losing me. Why would Nate’s fight be your fault?” As Tyson finished his question, you grabbed the charm on your necklace and flipped it over to show him. You saw the moment his confusion turned into realization at what the ‘29’ was referring to. “Wait you and Mac?” he whispered, eyes wide and smile threatening to show. You nodded. “I knew it! Since when?”
“Since the home opener. But we’re keeping it quiet so you need to calm down right now!”
“Does anyone else know?” he asked, trying and failing to compose his face.
“Only Gabe and Andre on the team. Mel knows, and my best friend Jeremy knows, plus our parents but that’s it.” You said, then remembered why you were having this conversation to begin with. “But now I think Ashley knows, at least she guessed when she saw my necklace which is why this is all my fault. I shouldn’t have been playing with it which drew her attention to it and it landed on the wrong side.” You wiped angrily at another tear that fell, annoyed. You had always been a crier when you were mad though; it was how you dealt best with the emotion. Tyson went to comfort you as the door behind him opened. You looked around him and saw Nate, with the outlines of an apparent black eye and medical tape over fresh stitches over his right eye on his eyebrow ridge. You rushed around Tyson and wrapped your arms around Nate’s sternum, hugging him not caring that he hadn’t showered yet. He held you with one arm, his stuff in the other as he looked at Tyson who was smiling like an idiot.
“See you two lovebirds on the bus,” the younger man saluted and walked off. Nate stared after him confused for a second, but then seeing no one was around he bent down and planted a kiss on top of your head. You separated from him, looking up into his blue eyes.
“I’m so sorry if this is because of me,” you whispered, not bothering to stop another tear that had fallen.
“It’s fine baby. Does Josty know about us?” Nate asked, wiping a tear with the pad of his thumb. It was a risk, being this close in public. But he hadn’t seen you cry before, and he wanted to be near you after what Benn had said on the ice. You nodded and grabbed his hand, noticing he had also split one of his knuckles.
“I was freaking out because Ashley saw the 29 on my necklace and I think she figured it out and said something to Benn. I feel like it’s my fault we lost and I ended up telling Tyson.” You were looking down at your hands, then looked back up to him, your heart clenching at how concerned he looked when it should have been the other way around. “Why did you get in the fight?” you asked softly.
“It doesn’t matter. It’s not your fault though. We’re a team Y/N, all of us. I screwed up and let what Benn said get to me. If it is anyone’s fault we lost, it’s mine,” Nate shook his head as you opened your mouth to protest. He really did not want to tell you what Benn had said as it had all been in regards to you. He had been vulgar, and Nate snapped. Giving your hand a slight squeeze, he continued. “I’m going to go change. Why don’t you get to the bus and I’ll see you in a bit okay?” You nodded, and Nate watched as you walked away. Though he was upset with himself for getting in a fight and subsequently losing the game, he would do it again for you in a heartbeat. And as you walked away from him toward the bus, he realized for the first time that he would do anything for you, and you were taking his heart with you piece by piece.
An hour later found you sitting against your headboard, giggling at Andre’s reaction to the Hallmark movie you had playing. He had complained about it at first, but your room your rules. He had surprisingly gotten into the plot, and was yelling at the man who mistakenly thought the main character was with someone else when he wanted to confess his feelings for her. After Chip Gate (what you loving dubbed Tyson and Cale’s chip debate after the first game), your room had become the place the team drifted to. Whether it was to conceal junk food that they shouldn’t be eating, an ear to listen to girl problems, or a comforting environment in terms of a loss on the road, you became the team’s go to person. Not to mention you had motherly tendencies and didn’t mind being there and fussing over everyone. It made you feel even more accepted as part of the team. This is why at the moment Andre was sitting on the floor leaning against the bed, Tyson had taken his usual spot laying across the foot of the bed, and Cale was sitting in the desk chair.
Before you could tell Andre to be quiet so you could hear what was being said, there was a knock at your door. Tyson got up and answered, Nate walking into the room behind him. His eye was swollen and bruising, but he seemed more relaxed as he walked over to the side of the bed and sat next to you. He put his arm around you, pulling you into his side and placing a kiss on your head. “Did I miss something?” you heard Cale speak up and you looked at Nate with wide eyes and a slight giggle.
“Dammit,” Nate mumbled. He forgot Cale didn’t know. This was the first time he thought he could be open with you, forgetting the young defenseman was still in the dark about your relationship.
“Coach and Nate are dating. Now shut up so we can see the guy stop being an idiot.” Tyson responded. “Also Coach, I hate you for making me so interested in this movie,” he complained over his shoulder.
“You know you love it,” you teased, snuggling into Nate’s side. Cale kept going between staring at you and Nate, then the tv, unsure of when this happened and how others knew. Luckily for him, the movie ended 20 minutes later and he started asking questions. You told him how you got together and asked him not say anything because you were keeping it quiet.
“Of course, but why do they know?” he asked.
“I was on the phone with Burky and Y/N sneezed in the background, and Josty just found out today because…why again?” Nate asked you.
“I was freaking out about you getting into a fight,” you answered.
“Does anyone else on the team know?” Cale questioned.
“Gabe, but that’s it. So you are now sworn to secrecy,” you said looking over at him. Cale nodded, and then turned back to the tv. After another hour the three of them left for their own rooms, leaving you and Nate alone. You turned the tv off and turned off all the lights beside one on the bedside table. Nate took his shirt off and climbed under the covers with you, the both of you on your sides facing each other. You ran your fingers gently over his swollen eye. “Do you want me to get you some ice for this, or anything?” you asked. Nate shook his head.
“No, I just want to lay here with you,” Nate grabbed your hand in his and kissed your knuckles.
“I’m sorry,” you whispered, still feeling guilty over his fight, the team’s loss. Nate placed his arm over your waist and pulled you closer to him.
“You have nothing to be sorry for. You were right, Ashley probably did figure it out. But I would fight anyone for you,” Nate said honestly, moving strands of hair out of your face.
“What did he say?” you asked. Nate shook his head again.
“He was being inappropriate to you. That’s why I took care of it,” he stated, and you didn’t ask any further questions. Nate was glad because he did not want to repeat the vulgar things Benn had said to him. He wishes he would have hit him a few more times just thinking about it. Nate was brought out of his thought by a soft giggle.
“You defended my honor?” you teased him. Nate chuckled and rolled his eyes at you. “My hero,” you whispered, pressing your lips to his. Nate returned your kiss, maneuvering himself so your back was flat on the bed with him hovering over you. The kiss became heated as Nate slipped one of his hands under your shirt.
“Any day,” he whispered before kissing your neck. After what became a heated make out session, you were laying with your back pressed into Nate’s chest, holding his hand that was slipped under your head as his other rested on your stomach, holding you close to him. And though you never wanted to be someone’s damsel in distress, with how protected you felt in Nate’s arms, he could defend you anytime.

NOVEMBER 16, 2020
“Hey Y/N!” Kirby said, as you entered the locker room where you, and 46 boys were dressing for the start of selection camp.
”Hey Dacher!” You said, walking over to your stall, putting down your backpack, and pulling out your phone to text your family.
’About to go in for the first day of selection camp! Love you guys!’ Was the text you typed out to the groupchat you had made with your best friends and family before hitting the send button and putting your phone away.
“Alrighty guys, are you already?” Andre said, adjusting his mask.
A mix of “Yeah!” and “Yes!” were thrown around the room.
After getting out on the ice, selection camp in Red Deer began.
“Hey, you’re doing great out there!” Kaiden said, skating up to you and tapping his stick on your kneepad.
“Thanks Kaiden! Not to bad yourself!” You said, touching his helmet as he went back to skating and stickhandling.
“Soooo what's that about?” Jamie asked, when you turned toward the other end of the ice, not realizing he was standing there.
“Holy shit Jamie! What are you doing here?” You asked, eyes wide.
“Uhh I’m at selection camp... why wouldn’t I be? But you and Kaiden like each other. Just admit it.” Jamie asked, giggling and wrapping his arm around your shoulder, pulling you into his side.
“What? No!” You said, skating away from him and hearing Jamie laugh so hard you were sure he had tears coming out of his eyes.
Anyways, you couldn’t really decide if it selection camp was easy or not. You couldn’t feel your legs, and it seemed like nobody else could either. Andre and the assistant coaches made all of the players stick handle, timed skates to the far blue line and back, and a few of the players helped the goalies by shooting slap shots at them and acted like you were in a shoot out.

NOVEMBER 21, 2020
You were just about to leave your room to go to the locker room for the first intersquad game when you heard your phone ringing. You looked over and saw that Andre was calling you.
“Hello?” You asked, picking up your backpack from the floor, sitting down on the hotel bed.
“Y/N? We just found out that a non-core staff member tested positive for covid and they had come in contact with assistant coaches, Michael Dyck and Jason Labarbera so they are quarantining. We don’t have to cancel the intersquad games so far, though. Just a heads up and wanted to let you know.” Andre said.
“Oh I hope they’re okay! Thank you for letting me know!” You said.
“Yep, no problem. See you in a few minutes.” Andre said, hanging up.
You put your phone in your back pocket and sighed. This was the type of stuff you would have to deal with.. and really what anyone in the bubble would have to deal with. You put your mask on and opened your hotel room door, and headed to the locker room of the area you and 46 other guys were playing at.
-
“Y/N! Y/N!” Kirby called, passing the puck to you. ‘Shoot the puck. Shoot the puck.’ was all that you were thinking while skating as fast as you can down the ice. You shot it, and it went in, past the goalie that would possibly be on the final roster along with you, and a bunch of other guys. “Yeah!” Kirby said, hugging you and laughing while your other linemates tapped each others helmets. You gave your bench high fives and sat down on the bench as the puck dropped again. “Nice job.” Jamie said, tapping your helmet as you sat down next to him. “Thanks!” You said.
A few minutes later, when the period ended, you stood up from your seat on the bench when you heard someone calling your name. You turn and see Kaiden.
“Hey Y/N! That was a sick goal!” Kaiden said, smiling down at you.
You laughed. “Thank you Kaiden!”
“Yeah well I better score one or else I can’t be here with you on the final roster.” Kaiden said, laughing.
“What? What if I’m not on the final roster? Why so sure of yourself, Guhle?” You asked.
“Y/N, you’re an amazing player. Why wouldn’t you be on the final roster?” Kaiden said, looking at you.
“T-thanks. You’re an amazing player too.” You said, heart starting to beat faster.
“Well Jamie is probably going to come looking for us if you don’t go.” Kaiden said, smiling at you.
“Yeah! Stalkerrr vibess!!! Anyways, see ya Kaiden, and good luck!” You said, turning around and fast walking down the tunnel.
‘Why does Kaiden make you feel like this if I only liked him as a friend? I mean he does have a really cute smile, and face, and hair, and... oh my god. Do I have a crush on Kaiden?’ You thought while walking into the dressing room.
-
“You’ve got something on your mind?” Braden asked, while sitting in his stall.
“Not really, just focused on the game.” You said, smiling over at Braden, knowing the words that just came out of your mouth was a complete lie.
“Okay.. but Y/N.. I’m always here to talk if you need me.” Braden said, getting up from his stall and going over to the dressing room door as the 2nd period was just about to start.
Maybe you should talk to Braden. Especially since you didn’t have your mom or best friends to talk to in person. You thought Braden would be a safe space to talk to about things.

NOVEMBER 24, 2020
“Y/N?” Andre said through the phone, with his voice sounding a bit stressed and frantic.
“Hey! What’s up?” You ask, putting your stick tape in your bag, getting ready to head down to the locker room for the last intersquad game.
“Two of the players tested positive for covid. We have to post-pone the last game. I just wanted to let you know so you don’t get all of your stuff together for nothing. Have a great day and contact me, Michael, or Mitch if you have any symptoms.” Andre said.
“Oh my god. Okay that you Andre. You stay safe too.” You said before hanging up and immediately texting the group chat with you, Kaiden, Kirby, Braden, Jamie. The people you were closest with during this whole quarantine thing.
‘guys did you hear about the covid positives?’ You type out, hitting send and immediately seeing speech bubble pop up on your screen.
Kaiden Guhle :)
Yeah. I’m disappointed. That means we’re stuck in this hotel room for 14 days.
Kirby Dach
It sucks. We’ll get through it though.
Jamie Drysdale
Yeah. It sucks a lot. What the hell am I supposed to do in a hotel room that I’m trapped in for 14 days?
Braden Schneider
Guys we will be fine. I hope.
Jamie Drysdale
YOU HOPE?
Kaiden Guhle :)
Okay guys, calm down. Let’s all facetime, okay?
Me
i’m in.
-
You and the group chat ended up facetiming for two hours. You told your parents about the two covid cases among the players. They were scared you were going to get covid, but you told them about the 14 day hotel room situation and they calmed down. (thankfully)
You had to get used to this. It was part of being “apart of camp.”

DECEMBER 8, 2020
Some time had pasted and December finally had come. Well, you shouldn’t be that excited about it. It meant cuts and the final cuts to the roster were coming. Kaiden and a bunch of other people were very reassuring when it came to your worries about being cut.
Coach Andre made an announcement via email stating that the first cuts had been made. The players were, Matthew Robertson, Mason Millman, Xavier Simoneau, Daemon Hunt, and Ridly Greig, leaving you and 41 other players in camp.
When you read the email, and didn’t see your name, you felt like a weight was lifted off your shoulders... but, you still had 3 more days till the final cuts were made from the roster.
-
-
DECEMBER 10, 2020
That day, seven more players were cut from camp. The players being goalies Brett Brochu and Tristan Lennox, and forwards Adam Beckman, Tyson Foerster, Hendrix Lapierre, Cole Schwindt, and Shane Wright, leaving you and 34 other players in camp.
‘One more day.’ Was what you were telling yourself, trying to ease the anxiety of being cut.
“You aren’t going to get cut, Y/N/N. I know your not.” Kirby reassured you through facetime.
“We’ll see Kirby, we will see.”
-
DECEMBER 11, 2020 (FINAL CUTS TO THE ROSTER)
You heard a knock at your hotel door, quickly getting up from your bed, and tossing on a hoodie. When you opened the door, you saw a few staff members and one seemed to be holding a phone.
“Hey Y/N! We have a few people who want to talk to you!” The staff member said, making you put on a confused face before them handing you the phone. You saw your mom, dad, and brother gathered all around the screen.
“Hey sweetie!” Your mom said.
“Hi guys!” You said, looking down at the phone, seeing a bunch of smiley parents and brother.
“Congratulations, honey! You made it onto the final roster for Team Canada!” Your dad said, your mouth immediately dropping and looking at the camera crew and staff members, wiping tears that came down your face from being so happy.
“Really? I really did it?” You asked, jumping up and down.
“This is not a reaction we’ve gotten before.” One of the staff members mumbled to the other, slightly chuckling.
After saying goodbye to your mom, dad, brother, and staff members, you went back into your hotel room and immediately check your email, making sure you, Kirby, Kaiden, Jamie, or Braden weren’t cut from the roster as they were the people you were closest to.
“We’ve made the final cuts to the roster. Team Canada is releasing forwards Mavrick Bourque, Graeme Clarke, Gage Goncalves, Seth Jarvis, Samuel Poulin, and Jamieson Rees and defensemen Lukas Cormier, Ryan O’Rourke, and Donovan Sebrango. Thank you.” You mumbled out, not seeing any of your friends names, smiling even wider. You then texted Kaiden to congradulate him.
Wow, you did it. You really did it.

Someone in the crowd | Tyler Seguin
Tumblr media
Summary: A friend of seggy and something happens (nothing too serious) and you’re there for him and he realizes he’s in love with you
Requested: yes
Tyler was frustrated. It was obvious.
He hadn’t scored in over ten games and his drought was becoming a heavy monkey against his back.
His teammates were concerned as Tyler was one of their heavy hitters on the team- they needed him to start getting them points if they expected to make it to the Stanley cup playoffs this year.
His parents and sisters were worried because him not scoring immediately made them think that something was wrong with him and he was going through something.
Even his friends were concerned- Tyler wasn’t his usual happy go lucky self, he was exhausted constantly and always yelling at the smallest things.
For Christ’s sake his dogs had even gotten depressed over the goal drought. Barely lifting their heads when he came in the house.
It was depressing times.
Which is what lead Y/N to storming in Tyler’s house one weekend. With every game that he missed scoring in, Tyler had stopped showing up to the bars and hanging out with the group.
Not wanting him to sit alone in his house and suffer by himself, the girl was on a mission.
“Alright Seggs! Get your ass of the couch and grab a shower! We’re going out tonight!” She cheered, making her presence known.
The dogs jumped up and Berliner towards her, attacking her in sniffs and kisses.
Laying on the dark coloured couch, Tyler groaned, his forearm pressed to his head as he clenched his eyes shut.
“Remind me why I gave you a key?” He asked rhetorically, sitting up and pushing his glasses up his nose as he peeked at her over the cushions.
Y/N had been a friend of Tyler’s for a long time now, they had met at a bar and had a one night stand, but they didn’t really feel like sleeping together again after that- they had a couple drinks again as friends and loved the company.
While they both had underlying feelings, there was never time to act on them with both of their busy schedules.
“Because if you didn’t, you would never get out of bed and shower- or make yourself a proper meal.” She chuckled, greeting him with a hug and playful kiss to his cheek.
Tyler hummed, she wasn’t wrong. Y/N was definitely like the mom friend of their group- he absolutely adored her.
Just her walking into the house had already made him feel better. “Why are we going drinking?” He asked softly.
Y/N fluttered her lashes at him as she sat down on the couch next to him, throwing her legs over his lap and letting his hands rest upon her thighs.
“You’re asking a lot of questions today.” She rolled her eyes. “Just grab a shower and get ready.” She groaned.
Tyler sighed softly. “Fineee but only because I love you.” He winked.
They were always flirty with each other and Y/N loved it, she would never changed anything for the world.
A couple of shots into the night, Tyler was feeling a buzz. He had his arm swung around Y/N and looked across at Jamie and some of their other friends.
It was nice to see everyone together after so long- even though he saw the guys at work, it was nice to have the girls and some of their other friends around.
“You know bud- you’re never gonna get laid if you keep hanging off of me all night.” Y/N chriped at him, laughing softly as she leaned into his embrace.
Raising her glass to her lips, the took a sip and leaked at him over the rim.
Tyler smirked. “Maybe I don’t wanna get laid- maybe I would rather hang out with you.” He winked.
Jamie exchanged a glance with one of the guys before chuckling. “You two should just get together- you already act like a couple.”
Y/N’s cheeks flames. Quickly standing up straight and shrugging Tyler’s arm off, she brushed it off. “He couldn’t handle me.”
As she walked away to go dance with the girls. Tyler’s gaze followed her- something in him that night twisted. He was arguing with her in his head. He could definitely handle her.
When a couple of weeks had passed and Tyler still hadn’t made a goal- he was starting to fall into a depression. He was angry all the time and lashed out at his teammates.
They had taken his “A” away off his jersey, and although t was just to allow someone else to wear it for a game- the fans were blowing it up and saying that his performance was causing the coaches to think about trading him.
Which in turn fuelled his own worries. He had a contract, but he was still worried they would trade him.
It was Saturday night and the stars were set to play a home game- Tyler was feeling particularly down on himself because Y/N was going that night.
He didn’t want her to see him fuck up and miss another goal- the man had even gone as far to beg her not to come.
“Can’t you just wait until I score a goal? Then you can come to as many games as you want after- just let me get my groove back!” He sounded like a pouting puppy over the phone.
Y/N just laughed, already wearing her Seguin jersey and beanie. Her hair was curled into tiny waves and she knew that while Tyler meant well- she has great seats for this game.
“Absolutely not- I have behind the bench seats- right next to the bench actually and on the glass! I’ll never get seats like this again!” She stressed to him happily.
Tyler rolled his eyes. “I bought you those tickets- I can get you more.” He sighed irritably.
Y/N sighed. “Tyler- I’m coming. You’re gonna be fine.” She reassured him. Giving him a quick goodbye, she promised to meet him at the rink.
She could still hear his dread through the phone as he hung up.
When Y/N had made it to her seat, she was carrying a pint of beer and buzzing with adrenaline- the arena was covered in a sea of green and blue- Dallas was playing maple leafs that night and everything was electric.
The players took the ice and focused on their warm-ups, doing some fan service. Y/N spotted a few players that she knew and waved, even waving to Mitch and Morgan. She knew a few of them from her job.
When the game had started, Y/N was silently praying that this would be the night Tyler got his groove back- she didn’t know how much longer he could hold out before his mental health really deteriorated for the worst.
In the second period, Tyler got a hold of the puck, zooming down the ice and getting a breakaway.
As he took a wrist shot, Y/N stiffened. As if the arena was put in slow motion- everyone rose to their feet.
It swished in the back of the net- deep.
Tyler spun around- his teammates engulfing him in a hug and patting his shoulders- he looked around with a bright smile- searching for Y/N.
When he found her, she was jumping around with the rest of the people in her row- cheering harder than anyone else.
She looked beautiful- with his jersey on and a stars beanie upon her head, glass of beer in her hands- she was stunning.
Tyler paused for a moment and took in her appearance. He remembered every attempt she made at cheering him up and smiled fondly.
When he met up with her outside after the game, he wrapped her up in his arms and hugged her tightly- kissing the top of her head as she clung to him.
She was beyond excited and so proud of him- through her rambling, Tyler shook his head- dropping his hockey back and cupping her cheeks.
His lips found hers and her felt the warmness of her touch kissing her passionately.
“What was that for?” Y/N pulled away, her words coming out breathlessly as she looked up at him.
Tyler grinned. “I love you.” It was different from Any other time he had said it. There was no flirtatious banter behind it or teasing drunken tone.
He was being sincere and honest.
Y/N’a gaze softened but her grin stretched. “I love you too...” she reassured him, reconnecting their lips.
They were gonna give this a shot- and whatever came from it, so be it. All it took was that one moment for Tyler to see her in a different light.

Dirt In The Skirt - Chapter 5 - There’s No Crying in Baseball
Frustration didn’t begin to cover what Jamie was currently feeling. There was nothing about his current situation that pleased him. Had you asked him where he thought he would end up, it wouldn’t be here. He was Jamie Fraser for Christ sake! He should be basking his is fame instead of managing a rag-tag group of girl ballplayers! Sure, he didn’t always make the best decisions when to came to his career and looking back, he would have done some things differently. However, what was in the past was just that - in the past. He needed to move on from what could have been and focus on what was yet to come. Alone for the first time in a while, he sought solace in the only place he knew to find it - on the baseball field. There was nothing better than being on the field first thing in the morning. Before all the hustle and bustle that lead up to a game. When it was just Jamie and the bases. He took a look around the deserted field. Closing his eyes against the sun’s bright rays, he allowed the light breeze to ruffle through his curls before he reached for the bat. Once the bat was in his hand, he positioned himself at home plate, staring down the automatic pitching machine located on the pitcher’s mound.
“Ye canna drink now Jamie, yer a Beauty now,” he mumbled under his breath as his bat made contact with the ball, breaking the silence with a loud crack. Sending it into left field, he took a moment to appreciate that he still had it - the ability to see the ball hit the bat, well before it made actual contact. His ability to anticipate where he was sending the ball as if he was always one play ahead of the other team. With a sigh, he returned his attention to the next ball. One after another, he sent them flying with the hopes that they would take all that he had pent up inside along with them. The stress he found himself under from Dougal and Colum, his dislike for the All American Girls’ Professional Baseball League and mostly, knowing all too well that his illustrious baseball career had been reduced to nothing more than a coach. Not just any coach, but a coach of a league that he knew all to well would be short-lived.
Look at her go, Louise has hit it out of the part for a triple! No wonder they call her “Let it Loose Louise!” That brings the score up to 3-0, Boston Beauties over the River Run Belles. Next up to bat is number 32, second base for the Beauties, Marjorie MacKenzie! Claire watched as Marjorie approached the plate, patiently waiting for the young girl to make eye contact with her. With Louise ensuring their lead, Claire didn’t want to take any risks. It as clear that Jamie wasn’t going to do anything when it came to coaching the team. It had fallen on Claire’s shoulders to ensure that the team played their very best each game. Sure it was just a game, but the Boston Beauties would not go out and make fools of themselves under her watch. When Marjorie’s eyes met hers, Claire began a series of motions, directing her as to her next move. Claire smiled at the girl when she was greeted with a nod of understanding. “Are ye daft lass?” Jamie called to Claire from the dugout. She could tell by the tone of his voice he didn’t agree with the calls that she was making. “Why would ye squeeze bunt with the team’s best hitter?” Before Claire even had the chance to defend herself, her teammates jumped in to back her play. “What do ye expect?” interjected Geillis. “Someone needs to run the team.” “Oui, someone who actually watches the games!” added Louise, making a point to comment on the fact that Jamie had a tendency to use their games as the perfect venue for his afternoon naps. While grateful for their support, Claire paid the girls no mind, not needing them to help fight her battles. Being perfectly able to put Jamie in his place all on her own, she turned back to him ready to justify her call. “A squeeze will work just fine, Jamie.” “Batter!” Jamie shouted, ignoring Claire, and attempting to get Marjorie’s attention. He began to deliver his own set of signals. It didn’t take long for Claire to realize what he was doing. She found herself at his side, battling for Marjorie’s attention, both given their own unique set of signals. Knowing full well that the call that she made was the right one, Claire didn’t back down. Jamie could give all the signals he wanted, as far as she was concerned. It was no surprise to her that poor Marjorie just stood at the plate, her eyes glazing over in confusion, unsure of whose signals she should be following. “Oh come now, Jamie!” “Ye dinna need to be thinking with yer heart, Claire. Ye need a big inning! But no, ye won’t listen to me. Why mind me? I’m no’ but your manager.” Jamie yelled his face flushing, taking on the same bright red coloring of his hair. “We are already three runs up, we don’t need to push it!” she spat back, taking a step closer to Jamie. “I’ve been playing baseball for as long as I can remember! I know how to call plays perfectly well! But why should you pay attention to what I have to say? Women are only fit to do as they’re told and obey orders! ” She had been participating in the sport long enough to know how to effectively call plays. Claire was never one to back down, and she wouldn’t be starting now with Jamie of all people. They stood face to face, sizing each other up. “I am the manager here!” Jamie bellowed. “If you are so interested in being the manager, why don’t you start acting like it you bloody Scot!” Turning back to the game, Jamie was insistent upon proving just who the manager of the team was. “Aye, lass,” Jamie said, trying to regain his composure. “How about ye take a seat. It looks like the bench could use some of yer wee coaching.” Without so much as another word, Claire defiantly stomped back to the dugout, her arms crossed in front of her chest, all the while her eyes were boring holes into Jamie’s back.
To keep their explosive arguments to a minimum, the pair kept a safe distance from one another for the sake of the team. They did everything in their power to avoid speaking to one another. Whenever Jamie came into the locker room to give the girls a pep talk before the game, Claire would conveniently be hiding in the bathroom stall, only coming out once the coast was clear.
Their multiple attempts at avoiding each other were starting to be noticed among the team. It was obvious to anyone around them that there was something going on between the pair. Louise and Annalise were convinced that their discord was stemming from some deep sexual attraction that needed to work its way to the surface. While Geillis, who knew Claire better than the rest of the team put together, was sure that it was just a clashing of personalities.
Even while trying their best to keep the peace, it didn’t take long for the delicate balance they had created between the two of them to reach to reach its tipping point. All of the animosity and anger they were harboring came spilling out during their next game with the Hillsborough Hitters. So after adding two runs in the sixth inning, your Boston Beauties and Hillsborough hitters have managed to even the score! Heading into the 7th inning stretch, the score is now 2-2! “Say, Claire, can I ask ye a question?” Jamie asked Claire as he made his way towards the plate. “Of course,” Claire responded, folding her arms across her chest as if to protect herself from what was coming. “What team do ye play for?” Jamie questioned her. “I beg your pardon? You know I’m a Beauty.” Claire looked at him with confusion, unsure of where this line of questioning was coming from. “Weel, I was just wondering, because I couldna figure out why ye’d no throw to second when we were up by two runs! You let the runner get on second and cost the team the lead!” Claire made no attempt to respond to Jamie. She stood there, as still as stone, with a glare that could easily rival Medusa’s. Claire believed that she could handle quite a lot under stress, had been that way most of her life, but dealing with Jamie was another issue altogether. It was as if she hadn’t been given enough time to cope with the loss of Frank, before being thrown into the unknown of this new league. Add to that the stress that Jamie continually put her, and the team under, she could feel herself slipping, reaching the end of her rope. It would only be a matter of time before she lost her grip. “Do ye ken what it’s like to live as half a man? To lose the one thing that means the most to ye and have to accustom yerself to exist in the bit that’s left?” “Do I know? Do I know how that feels? Yes, you bastard, I know! What do you think I’ve been going through since Frank…” the rest of Claire’s sentence was caught in her throat as she attempted to keep the tears that were welling up in her eyes from falling. “I’m no’ talking about ye losing yer husband. I’m talking about losing her life’s passion!” Jamie retorted. “And I suppose that makes it alright, does it? What makes you think that your loss is so much more important than mine?” She screeched, her eyes burning with unshed tears. “Are ye crying?” Taking Claire’s silence for insubordination, Jamie continued on his tirade. “Ye need to start using yer heid! ‘Tis the lump that’s three feet above yer arse!” Claire would have given just about anything not to show this form of weakness to Jamie. She had tried to bite her lip, to keep the tears hidden. He already had such a low opinion of the woman on his team. The last thing she wanted was to add more fuel to his fire, but he had struck a nerve deep within her, one that she had fought to keep hidden. As far as Claire was concerned, this terrible war made everyone equals. Everyone was suffering at the hands of the World War. What gave Jamie the right to assume that the things that he had lost as a result of it were greater than hers, or anyone else on the team for that matter. It bothered her even more so, that the majority of his so-called problems were self-induced, and could have been easily avoided. The loss of her husband, however, was another matter entirely. She hadn’t made the choice to lose her husband, nor did Frank. “I’m not crying,” Claire croaked. “There’s no crying!” Jamie yelled. “Ye ken there is no crying in baseball!” As the pair continued arguing, their shouts grew louder and breached far beyond the boundaries of the dugout. Everyone suddenly became interested in what was transpiring between them rather than the actual game. It didn’t take long, with gameplay currently at a standstill, for the umpires to insert themselves into the fray. “And just what seems to be the issue Mr. Fraser?” asked the umpire, a kindly grandfather-like gentleman who went by the name of Wakefield, as he made his way to Jamie and Claire. “The lass is crying,” Jamie said, motioning in Claire’s direction. “Perhaps it’s because yer chastised her a bit too far?” Wakefield questioned, bring his hand up to rest on Jamie’s shoulder.  “Just a bit of advice, ye need to treat each of these lasses as if they were yer own mother.” “Och aye,” Jamie sneered as he shrugged off the elderly ump’s embrace. “I’ll be giving ye some advice as weel. Did ye ken you look like a right tadger in a wee hat?” “I’ve about enough of yer tongue for one game, laddie,” Wakefield yelled, grabbing Jamie by his shirt, forcefully directing him towards to entrance to the locker rooms. “Yer out of here!” “Ye canna throw me out!” Jamie shouted. “We’ve got a game yet to finish!” “I said you’re out! Get off the field!” With nothing left to say, Claire returned to the dugout as she watched as Jamie made his way off the field. As soon as he was out of sight, her shoulders relaxed slightly, the adrenaline in her body lessening as her fight or flight reflex calmed. While there was a palpable difference in the atmosphere due to his absence, there was still something amiss. Claire couldn’t help but think that she was in for a long and bumpy ride as they approached the end of the season.
As the rest of the game went on, Claire couldn’t help but notice that her mind was not present on the field, but rather with Jamie - cast off the field, likely sitting alone in the locker room. She couldn’t shake the fact that he should still be out here with his team. Whether either of them liked it or not, they were in this together.
What is it about that bloody Scot that has you so out of sorts, Beauchamp? You’ve never let a man have this effect on you before.
Claire wrapped her arms around herself in an effort to protect herself from the thoughts that were racing through her mind. The thoughts that she knew she wasn’t going to be able to hide from for much longer.

Power Over Me
Word Count: 1,156
Players: Tyler Seguin, Jamie Benn, Dallas Stars
Warnings: cussing
Authors note: Sooo after the stupid shit that management said about Tyler and Jamie, this random idea popped into my head and well.. here we are lmao. I don’t know if there will be more parts to it or not (though I have a few ideas), let me know what you think! Feedback is very much appreciate :) <3 Hope you all enjoy!
(Tyler’s POV)
I could hear the clicking of heels coming down the tunnel. I turned my head just in time to see our new owner poke her head around the corner.
"Jim? May I speak with you after this period is over with?"
Monty turned and nodded to her before turning his attention back to the game. She glanced over to me and smiled a bit before turning to walk back down the tunnel.
"I swear this new owner is going to be the death of me. She has no idea what she's doing," grumbled our coach behind us.
"At least shes trying to do something," I mumbled as I jumped over the boards to go out for my next shift.
The guys had all filed into the locker room for the intermission between periods. It had remained 0-0, and we had more shots on the net which was good. We just hadn't been able to find the back of the net yet, but we still had 40 minutes left to do so.
My head turned towards the door as I heard it open and the familiar clicking of heels on the floor as our owner walked into the locker room.
"What did we talk about in my office the other day?" Was the first thing she said.
"Can we talk about this in the ha-"
"No I'm good here thanks," She said crossing her arms. "What did we talk about?"
I could see the look on Monty's face. He was not impressed with having to deal with this, especially in the middle of a game, but we all knew she wasn't leaving any time soon.
"No? Don't want to answer my question? Fine. Listen I bought this team because I was in the position to do so, it was recommended to me as a good investment by my accountant, and I have been a Stars fan for years. I did not appreciate how management and the last owner decided to treat our star players here. I told you all that shit was changing when I came in here. It was not only unprofessional but it was fucking rude. And honestly I didn't agree in the slightest with what they had to say. In my opinion the lines have been messed up too much. I understand what you are trying to do here with getting the other lines up to speed with Ty and Jamie, I get that. We have talked about it before and you have explained what you are trying to do. There have been good things to come out of it sure," She said as she made her way closer to the coach. "But I told you-" she said pointing her finger at him "-do NOT split them up," she said pointing over to Jamie and I.
"Alright alright. Can I talk to my team now?"
She just stared at him for a moment, her jaw clenched once, before turning to all of us.
"Have a great game boys. You all are looking good so far," she smiled as she made her way out of the room.
"Alright, Benn and Segs back on the top line."
Jamie and I just nodded, looking over to one another, not sure exactly how to process what just happened. That wasn't something owners did, but this was not a normal owner that’s for sure.
The rest of the game had gone amazing, we didn't let the other team score, Comeau scored, Rads got two goals, Jamie scored, and I got a goal. It hadn't been completely back and forth for the last 40 minutes, it was pretty one sided. We had good puck handling and barely had any turnovers.
"That is what I like seeing from you guys! Still have more to work on, but this looked better," Monty said as he entered the room behind the last few guys.
It wasn't long before the media flooded the room, coming over to talk to us about the game. There were 7 or 8 microphones shoved in my face which meant tonight was my turn to talk to them.
"Tyler, do you think that being under a new owner and a few other new management has done anything to help you guys have a game like this for the third time this week?"
"Uh yeah actually I do," I said as I rubbed the back of my neck.
"What about it has helped?"
"Positivity if I'm going to be honest."
"Positivity?"
"Yeah, our owner trusts us to do what we do. If she sees something she doesn't like, she comes and fixes it herself. Most other owners don't do that."
"So you think having an owner that is more involved has been a positive for you guys?"
"Yes. She talks with us and makes sure to pay attention to everyone's feelings on things, and tries to fix what she can so that everything flows better. It obviously shows in the last 3 games."
"You guys haven't let more than 4 goals in the last 3 games and you won all of them."
"Exactly," I answered,
"And this is the third game under ownership of Brooke Davis, correct?"
I just nodded, looking around to see if anyone else had another question before I stood up and thanked them, making my way to the showers.
As I made my way back towards the locker room it was a lot more quiet than I was expecting. I poked my head in the door and saw that Brooke was in there talking to the team.
"You guys did so amazing tonight. I'm so proud of everyone in here. We just need to keep working on a few things, but let's wait to worry about that for practice, go celebrate with your families and friends," She smiled as everyone cheered, going back to changing and grabbing their stuff.
She turned and started to make her way to the door as I made my way into the room fully. She looked up and smiled at me, stopping in front of me. I paused and smiled back. I swallowed noticing that her blouse was unbuttoned a few buttons, a peek of her cleavage showing. I didn't mean to stare but..
"Tyler?"
Her voice snapped me out of it as I felt her finger under my chin, lifting my head a bit. She had a smirk on her face, at least she wasn't mad.
"Eyes are up here hun," she said softly, leaving her finger under my chin.
"Sorry.."
"Its alright. You did great tonight," she said, her hand moving down to my chest, lingering there for a moment before moving up to fix the collar on my shirt. She flashed me a smile before stepping around me to walk out of the locker room again.
Fuck.
How was she my boss? And how was she only 23?
This was going to be an interesting year...

don’t you wanna save this dirty little damsel?
For the Steve Rogers 100th Birthday Celebration created by the lovely @mee2themoo :D
Pairing: Steve Rogers/Darcy Lewis
Overall Rating: Explicit
Chapter: 2 of 3 Read chapter one here or AO3
Summary:
It started with a simple question in Tony’s lab.  And it ended up in a small town strip club, where nobody recognizes four Avengers in civilian clothes sitting in the back.  Needless to say, even when he was in the ice, Steve has never had a more uncomfortable birthday. But amidst the smoke, the lights, and the skintight red, white, and blue, one Darcy Lewis is out to start some literal and figurative fireworks.
For the Steve Rogers 100th Birthday Celebration :)Title comes from Natalia Kills’s “Problem.”  Prompts included: Fireworks, Baseball, Small Town, and Red, White, and Blue.
“I thought you said you wanted some, and I quote, ‘fine quality dining.’”
Steve’s tone was one of amusement, low over the sound of clinking utensils and dull chatter at the local Denny’s.  Darcy smiled and swirled her French fries around in the small glob of ketchup on her plate before popping them into her mouth.
“Yeah.  They make a mean Bacon Gouda Burger.”  She dusted her salty fingers on her napkin, then pulled her jacket a little tighter around her.  They kept the Denny’s in the little podunk town pretty damn cold, so that when it was summertime that initial walk in the doors was refreshing, but by the time you were sitting for more than ten minutes, you needed to run outside into the heat and humidity to get your jacket out of the car.  “So level with me, Captain Steve.  Why am I here with you right now?”
“Because you agreed to come?”  She raised her eyebrows, unconvinced.  He set down his Coke.  “Fine.  I asked you to come out with me because I think you’re an interesting girl.  You had this...well, this look in your eyes.  And when I was back in that club, I got to looking at the other girls and…”  He shrugged and ran a hand through his hair.  “...they had this look in their eye like they were ashamed.  And you didn’t.”
He didn’t know what he’d expected for her to do or say in response to that, but it certainly wasn’t for her to purse her lips, raise her eyebrows, and completely break eye contact with him.
Shit.  “Did I say something wrong?”
She inhaled deeply and exhaled equally deeply, looking back up at him.
“Look, dude.  I know you’ve only been back in the world for the last, what, eight, ten years?  And in those eight-to-ten years, you’ve been shacked up in Avengers-land dealing with aliens and dictators and crazies of all shapes and sizes.”  She paused to sip from her soda.  “But, like, the whole ‘you’re different from other girls’ thing?  Went outta style a looong time ago.”  She was running her fingernails over the tabletop, brushing over the nicks and ridges.  “We all do it for our own reasons.  Just because my reasons might be different from the next girl’s doesn’t mean I’m any better than her.”
Steve could feel the blood filling his face.  God I’m a fucking idiot.  But she was still sitting there, though looking thoroughly unimpressed, picking at her cheeseburger and her French fries.
“I’m sorry.  I didn’t mean to...I didn’t mean to be insensitive.”  He pushed a lump of syrupy pancake across his plate, listening to the small screech his fork made across the porcelain.  “But you asked why I wanted you to come out with me.  And I guess the best way I can put it is that I liked how you talked to me and I liked how you seemed so confident.  And I’m not always that way.”  This seemed to soften her, judging by the gentle smile that rose to her lips when he said this.  “So why did you agree to come out with me?”
The gentle smile turned brighter, easing some of the tension in Steve’s chest.  He realized he’d been holding his breath, and exhaled softly through his nose.
“Well, for one thing, you’re pretty hot, and I’d be an idiot to say no to a date with Captain America.”  She grinned.  “And I’ll admit, part of me is wondering if I can’t double-cross you into going to my baby brother’s baseball game with me tonight so we can watch the fireworks after and make sure he doesn’t get into any nonsense.  But, honestly, you seem very sweet.  And I guess I wanna get to know Steve, not Cap.”  She took a big bite of her burger, and some of the juice from the meat dripped onto her plate.  “Plus, a burger with you kicks the shit out of stripping any day, to be honest.”
He smiled back at her, finally letting himself ease into his seat.  He took a bite of the pancakes, now long soggy from soaking in maple syrup on his plate.
“A burger with you kicks the shit out of sitting in a strip club any day.  Now, about that baseball game…”
*****
It had been a long while since he’d smelled freshly cut grass and the crisp dirt of a baseball diamond.  In fact, the last time he’d smelled a baseball diamond had been before the serum, when he’d wheezed his way up to the Dodgers stadium with Bucky after school and whiffing the field had brought him into a coughing fit under the bleachers.  Bucky’d made off with a strawberry blonde in a skirt that was a little tight around the hips for three innings, and Steve had watched Al Lopez fire an out at a stolen second base over the best corn dog he’d ever had.
This time, though, Darcy had pulled a couple of camping chairs out of the trunk of her little sedan and had propped them up on the other side of the third base line, just outside left field.  Most of the people in the bleachers were decked in the stars and stripes, and the boys on the field wore star-spangled stirrups in celebration of the holiday.  The air was still fairly thick with East Coast humidity, and the sky had begun to glow golden as the sun started going down.  As the boys entered inning four, Steve was starting to think that Tony had done him a favor.
“So would it be a douchebag move to ask you why you do the whole club thing?  Even if it’s out of curiosity?”  He tilted his sunglasses to dim the glare glinting off one of the stadium lights.  Darcy edged her chair closer to his, letting her arm brush comfortably against him.
“Because I grew up here, and every teacher I’ve ever had, almost every adult I’ve ever known never wanted to take me seriously.”  She leaned forward, slipping her hair into a ponytail at the top of her head.  “I did fine in school, but they always told me I wasn’t really smart enough to make up for my smart mouth.”  She plucked a Gatorade out of the cooler at her side and handed it to Steve before grabbing one for herself.  “I went off to college for a bit, got my B.A. in sociology, shacked up with my parents for a bit...then when I moved out I thought people’d finally take me seriously.”
“But they didn’t?”
“Nope.”  She let the p pop satisfyingly at the end of her lips.  “My folks kicked Taylor out not long after, so he’s been living with me for the last year and a half.”  Steve opened his mouth to voice some kind of sympathy, but she shook her head, meeting his eyes through her own pair of shades.  “No, don’t be sorry.  He’s my best friend and he’s way better off with me than he was with them.”
“I’m glad you’ve got each other, then.”
“Soon as he graduates next year, we’re getting the hell out of this dumbass town.”  She breathed it out in a sigh, fingering a loose strand of hair that had escaped her ponytail.  Without thinking, Steve reached over to tuck it behind her ear.  Darcy glanced up at him, her eyebrows furrowing in confusion.
“Any idea where you want to go?”  He didn’t move his hand.
“Far from here.”  Her voice had turned soft.  Her lips were so close, so pink, and the curve of her Cupid’s bow so gentle that Steve was beginning to think that if he leaned over just a hint, if he caught them against his just so, they might just cast a spell on him, and she might just own him forever.  “Steve, I’m - ”
“THATABABY, LEWIS!” screamed out the coach at the third base line, jumping up and down, and around the bases flew a tall, gangly teenage boy, his helmet bouncing with every step.  He’d rounded second and slid into third by the time the center fielder was able to return the ball to the infield.  Darcy had leapt to her feet and was clapping furiously, then cupped her hands around her mouth and screamed for him.
“Yeah, Taylor!” she cheered, flashing him a thumbs up when he turned to face her from third base.  He flashed her the same, and in that brief moment that Steve had been able to catch a glimpse of him, he could count the freckles on the kid’s face, he could see the chip in the kid’s third tooth from the middle, but nothing shone more from Taylor Lewis than how excited he was to see his big sister.
Steve couldn’t help the smile that clung to his lips as he clapped along.  When Darcy scooted her chair closer to him again, settling into it and into the arm that had somehow found its way around her, she couldn’t help smiling either.
The game ended in the seventh inning with a score of 4-0 to the Rangers, Taylor’s team.  After the obligatory coaches’ talk in the outfield, the boys cleaned up and Taylor came bounding from the dugout grinning from ear to ear.
“Holy shit.  Holy shit, Darce, how’d you line this up?”  He reached for Steve’s hand immediately, grasped it firmly and shook hard.  “Great to meet you, Mr. Steve, I’d call you Mr. Rogers, but, you know, he’s a whole ‘nother ballpark.”
“You’re babbling, Tay.  And watch the language around my friends, okay?”  She elbowed him playfully in the side before reaching around for a hug, unfazed by the dirt caking his jersey.
“Captain America is your friend?” he asked incredulously, looking from one to the other, and though Steve had almost doubted it was possible, smiled even bigger.  “No way, I gotta tell Jamie - ”
“Tay,” Darcy chided, folding her arms over her chest.  “Nobody knows hes down here.  Give the guy a break, I’m sure he doesn’t want to sign autographs and take pictures with everyone on his birthday.”
“It’s your birthday?  Dude, happy birthday!  How old are you in, like, people time?  ‘Cause you’ve got one of those faces, you know?  Where you might be, like twenty-nine, but you could also be, like thirty-five, and it probably doesn’t make that much of a difference as you get older, plus you’re like, super-serumed up, and - ”  He reached out, as if his hand was moving of its own accord, and let his fingertips brush against Steve’s chest, and for an amusing moment Steve was reminded of the way that Peggy had done the same thing about seventy years ago, and suddenly it made sense as to why he and Darcy had a strained relationship with their parents.  “ - gosh, man, it’s so great to meet you.”
“Great to meet you, too, Taylor.  That was a nice triple out there, by the way.  You’ve got a good swing.”
Taylor’s face lit up, and it was as though Babe Ruth himself had clapped him on the shoulder and said the words to him.  He shook Steve’s hand again before blushing furiously, looking back and forth between him and Darcy.
“Hey, uh, kiddo, look who’s here.”  Darcy nudged him again, then pointed to a cream-colored truck that was pulling into the dirt parking lot, shiny red rims rolling through the dust.  If it was possible, Taylor’s smile grew even brighter, and as though he totally forgot about Steve, he patted Darcy on the back and bolted for the truck, tossing his batbag into the back and hopping into the passenger seat.
“Who’s that?”  Steve nodded at the pickup, folding his arms over his chest.
“His boyfriend.”  A hand had popped out of the driver’s window, wagging at Darcy, who waved back.  “Jamie’s a good kid.  I’m glad they’ve got each other out here.  I’d kick his ass for not coming out for Taylor’s game earlier, but he works a lot.”
“So young?”
Darcy shrugged, combing her fingers through her hair.  “Got a kid sister and his mom’s sick.  He takes care of ‘em.  Like I said, he’s a good kid.”  The last curve of the sun had finally descended below the horizon, and the brilliant gold of the sky was fading into deep crimson, then purple.  Darcy plopped back into her chair, pulled a thick blanket out of her tote bag, and slung it across her shoulders.  “Come sit with me.”
He took his place beside her, letting her drape the blanket around the both of them, huddling closer to share heat.  Which Steve was sure he wasn’t short on, considering how close she was, the lavender in her hair drifting toward him.
His arm was around her again, and he wasn’t sure what possessed him to say it, but then he was telling her, “You know, this is the best birthday I’ve had in a really long time.”  In a voice softer than he’d used in a long time.  The kind of voice he used to reserve for Peggy…
“I’m glad I could be part of it,” she mumbled, leaning so that the side of her head pressed to his shoulder.  “I’m gonna need to kiss a lot of ass for playing hooky, but it’s been worth it.”  Her voice was soft, too, the words tumbling out of her mouth like a song that Steve had never heard.
“Maybe I could come around here more often.  I could take you for some more fine quality dining.”  She’d let her hand wander to his forearm, and her fingers were circling a spot on his wrist, and Steve was certain the goosebumps that sprouted up there had nothing to do with the slowly cooling night.
“I’d like that.  I’d really like that.”
They sat in comfortable silence as the chirping of the cicadas rose in the distance.  Darcy would turn every so often to glance over her shoulder at the cream-colored truck, and each time would nestle closer to Steve’s side afterward.  Not long after the sky turned inky black, dotted with clusters of stars and galaxies, the park officials started setting off fireworks.  Bursts of red exploded in the sky, then white, shimmering off into oblivion when they burned out.  The sparks blew every color of the rainbow, but Steve was finding it more and more difficult to concentrate on the sky.  It was like gravity itself had pulled Darcy to his side, and gravity itself was pulling his face toward hers.
He kissed her under a shower of purple, funnily enough, and her lips were even softer than he’d imagined.  As the night grew darker and the sparks above them grew brighter, Steve held Darcy close, feeling her fingers thread through his hair, his own hands gently cradling the curve of her neck.
And as the sky lit up red, white, and blue, Steve was thinking that maybe, just maybe, he’d have to thank Tony when he got back.

NFL 2021 Power Rankings
Two weeks down it’s time to over react!
32. Jacksonville Jaguars- meet the new boss same as the old boss. Urban Mayer and Trevor a Lawrence are starting off their NFL careers about as expected. Lawrence will have a second season at least but if things don’t turn around the same might not be able to be said about Urban. Maybe fake a heart attack?
31. New York Jets- back to back blowout losses is not how mean green thought they’d start 2021 but it’s certainly not a surprise. Any time your star QB ends the half with as many interceptions as completions it’s time to panic.
30. New York Giants- and the Jets stadium partner is also their partner in sadness. Big blue isn’t much better off with the derp know as Daniel Jones under center and a terrible running game to start 0-2 and making the case for the #1 overall pick. Will either Jones or Judge be around next year? For the sake of Giants fans I hope the next coach can help eliminate penalties.
29. Atlanta Falcons- the best thing to come out of Atlanta the last two weeks is Secret Base’s video series about them. The ATL was surprisingly close to upsetting Tampa this week but reality comes back. Matt Ryan hasn’t been playing great this year but neither has anyone else playing in the black and red. The way things are going it’s only a question of when not if the Falcons decide to move on from Matty Ice.
28. Detroit Lions- 0-2 has never looked quite as good as Goff and the lions putting up a big fight to both the 49ers and Packers. After two weeks it’s clear this is not the NFC’s worst team by a mile but that is not going to turn into vary many wins considering the schedule ahead of them. Trading for Jerod Goff wasn’t as much a tank job as previously thought, I don’t think Mathew Stafford could have turned either of those losses into wins.
27. Cincinnati Bengals- “reworked” offensive line huh? How’d that work for you bengals fans? Only two games into the year and Joe Burrow has already been sacked 9 times and hit another 16 times. Forget a winning record if Bengals fans want to see Joe have a career longer than 5 years you need to make some changes need to be made!
26. Philadelphia Eagles- Week 1 Jalen Hurts played out of his mind and lead the team to the win but Week 2 Hurts lived up to his name in a close but pedestrian performance. Seriously how do you get a 91 yard completion and not get ANY points?!
25. Chicago bears- how ironic that the Andy Dalton revenge game is what leads to his end as the starting QB. That being said how well Justin Fields plays now as the starter will decide how far this team goes and if they can snag another playoff spot in a tough NFC.
24. Houston Texans- I’m just as surprised to see them up here as you are. Tyrod is showing he can still play a starting roll by running all over the jags and almost upsetting Cleveland at home. Honestly if he didn’t get injured the Texans might have been 2-0 right now. Houston has made it clear that they are not the push over we thought they are this year.
23. Minnesota Vikings- the Vikings were one missed Morten Anderson extra point…I mean Greg Joseph field goal from beating the cardinals in a game they absolutely should have won. That and a Dalvin Cook fumble is all that stands in the way from a 2-0 start for Minnesota. Now that you’ve been punched in the mouth it’s time to see how you react.
22. Indianapolis Colts- a painful 0-2 start for a team that like the Vikings could have been 2-0. The Colts played two good teams in the Seahawks and Rams to start the year and have both a run for their money and fought hard. In a perfect world I would pick them to be the 0-2 team most likely to make the playoffs but this isn’t a perfect world and with Wentz injuring both ankles it’s up to Jacob Eason to try and avoid an 0-3 death nail.
21. New England Patriots-Belichick gonna Belichick I guess. Not that focusing on defense and running first is a bad strategy especially with a rookie QB. It certainly is working better than whatever the Jets are trying.
20. Miami Dolphins- I’m not sure what hurts more for Dolphins fans seeing Tua get injured or getting shutout at home to a rival. 35-0 is a hard pill to swallow. Now I don’t think having Tua would have made much of a difference last week against the bills but going forward at least one week with Jacoby Bresett under center is only going to make things harder for a Dolphins team with playoff aspersions.
19. Washington Football Team- 0-1 with Ryan Fitzpatrick and 1-0 with Taylor Heinicke and a share of the NFC East for the moment is about all the nameless ones can ask for at this point in the season. Unfortunately for the Team you’re facing the Bills next week and your defense has not been playing up to expectations.
18. New Orleans Saints- the Saints domination of the Packers in week one inspired hope for the Brees-less era but the teams follow up against Carolina brought them crashing down as Winston regressed to his typical Tampa form. Week four’s test against Mew England with show how well this team bounces back and how competitive they will be.
17. Pittsburgh Steelers- this team will be pulled along by its defense kicking and screaming. Lucky for the black and yellow they get to beat up on the bengals next week but you better be ready to show up to your week four game against Green Bay.
16. Denver Broncos- 2-0 is 2-0 no matter who you play right. That being said it’s hard to tell how strong this Denver team is after watching them play against the two children in a trench coat known as the jags and giants. Lucky for the Sutton-less Broncos they get to play the Jets in week 4 before a real test (and probably loss) in the form of the ravens.
15. San Francisco 49ers- the 49ers as lead by Jimmy G might be the weakest 2-0 team in the NFL right now. Scoring a measly 17 points against Philadelphia and almost letting in the Detroit Lions the week before has done nothing to inspire confidence with diet Alex Smith. This team as it currently stands is in peak form to meander around and do nothing and given the rest of the division that is a death sentence.
14. Los Angeles Chargers- the bolts find themselves sitting at 1-1 after absolutely refusing to get out of their own way in the form of 99 penalty yards against the Cowboys. Justin Herbert has been playing week but far from light(n)ing the world on fire as exemplified by the pair of picks he throw last week. Monday night’s game against the now Las Vegas Raiders will be a big test to see how far the team can go…also FYS, if you know you know
13. Seattle Seahawks- the Seahawks live on the razors edge. The defense has been as good (read bad) as expected but the offense has not been playing up to expectations and because of that they almost let the lions comeback on them and then proceed to let the Titans score 17 unanswered to win. If this trend continues chief Wilson will not only bring sitting at home come the playoffs but will do so in last place.
12. Tennessee Titans- speaking of that Seattle-Tennessee game… next up is the Titans who have to not be feeling good about how their season has gone so far. The super bowl hopefuls started out getting flattened by Arizona before almost falling to 0-2 before just pulling out an overtime win. Much like Seattle the defense side of the ball is what will hold the team back.
11. Carolina Panthers- probably the biggest surmise so far is the 2-0 (well now 3-0 because I’m doing these late) Panthers. Granted two of those wins are against the Texans and Jets but the blue and blacks do get credit for shutting down New Orleans and Jamis Winston and that why the end up here knocking at the door of the top ten.
10. Dallas Cowboys- by the edge of their teeth the Cowboys find themselves at number 10. After giving the Tom Bradys all they can handle in week one they get their first win (barely) against a very good Los Diego Chargers team thanks to them shooting themselves in the foot a little less then their opponents. Lucky for the jerryworld inhabitants they get a freebie on Monday against the Eagles.
9. Green Bay Packers- it took a six quarters but the Packers finally showed up for a football game! Now we’ll see if that’s a giant in the making like the last few years or a flash in the pan has yet to be seen but of course there’s still plenty of football including a good yardstick against San Francisco in a chance to right an NFC Title game loss.
8. Los Vegas Raiders- the Raiders have beaten the Steelers and ravens and I think that makes them the AFC North’s best team? All jokes aside the Raiders have started out 2-0 and in a good position to start off the year. If they continue to play up to this new standard they very well could be the AFC West’s champion
7. Cleveland Browns- Maybe almost beating KC in week one gave the browns a hangover and that’s why the Texans were as big a threat as they were? On the bright side even with the injury concerns Cleveland is still playing great football and even get to get their team in order going up against a pair of NFC north teams.
6. Arizona Cardinals- the Redbirds benefitting from a missed field goal? After seeing last season I’m shocked. These Cardinals are fun to watch and K1 is playing up to his billing as the number 1 overall pick. I don’t know what to do I’m not used to being excited about something that isn’t the draft…ugh sorry A’s fans for taking him away?
5. Buffalo Bills- ok now things are getting serious. After loosing to Pittsburgh to start the season the Bills took out their frustrations on a helpless Dolphins team to the tune of a 35 point shutout. The Williams are still one of the best teams in the NFL and you need to come prepared.
4. Los Angeles Rams- despite the Colts best efforts Stafford is still perfect as a non-lion quarterback. It wasn’t perfect but the Sheep pulled out a win and showed why they are a super bowl contender.
3. Baltimore Ravens- what a difference a week makes. From licking their wounds loosing to the Raiders to giving the chiefs and Patrick Mahomes his first loss in September. The Ravens put down any doubts from anyone that they are not a championship contender as a reward get to beat up on Detroit.
2. Kansas City Chiefs- The aforementioned loss to Baltimore not withstanding Kansas City is still a powerful team. It’s hard to fault the 2 time AFC champions for a 1 point loss on a fumble to a playoff team. They’re good who knew?
1. Tampa Bay Buccaneers- you’ve got to beat the best to be the best and so far TB is 2-0 so they’re number one in the rankings. Don’t have much else to add.

The SEC’s weirdest rivalry may be what we need.
As we look forward to this afternoon’s Halloween matchup between Auburn and LSU, let’s go back several months and look at a possibility.
March 13th, 2020. Friday, March 13th, 2020.
That was kind of the day when this all hit the fan. Aside from being designated “World Sleep Day”, the news on that particular Friday was vast.
We’d just canceled basketball. Like, it was done. We wouldn’t get to see Auburn defend a conference tournament title and make a return to the NCAA Tournament. No more NBA, either.
Here’s a snippet of the headlines then:
Tumblr media
It’s pretty much all bad news, and it’s continued that way for several months. No lie, 2020, and October in particular, have been long and tough.
So, how do we give this thing a hard reset? Can we power cycle it? Does that work?
When you finally get to this point, what can you do but be a little aggressive?
View post on imgur.com
And how does it get more aggressive than trying to combat the miasma of 2020 than by taking a visit to the old backwoods voodoo shop that Auburn and LSU co-own and operate.
Here we are, trying to find solutions for this pandemic and trying year, and the answer was here all along. Just let Auburn and LSU play. We should’ve done this months ago. Spring scrimmage. Best of seven. Apply the magic liberally.
We would’ve wiped this thing out by mid-April.
When you consider the facts, there’s no other way to approach this. Auburn and LSU have played the most unimaginable series in conference history, and the rivalry doesn’t even really date as far back as some other matchups.
Of particular note:
1988 - Stupid idiot Earthquake Game. LSU scores in the closing seconds and the bourbon-induced guttural moans triggered a flimsy seismograph across campus to register. Auburn’s only loss in the regular season. With a win, they would’ve played Notre Dame for a national title.
1994 - Ha! Stupid idiot Curley Hallman!
Tumblr media
LSU quarterback Jamie Howard throws three pick sixes among his five interceptions in the fourth quarter, and Auburn erases a 23-9 deficit to win 30-26 and keep the winning streak alive.
1995 - Stupid idiot Phantom Whistle game. Patrick Nix got sacked for a safety when he heard a whistle from the stands and stopped during the play. Auburn loses 12-6.
1996 - Stupid idiot Barn Burning game. Literally a barn, not like “BARN CHEATIN”. Smoke billowed up from behind the student section but play continued. Auburn got screwed out of a touchdown when a Robert Baker catch was called incomplete. We lose 19-15.
1999 - Cigar Game. Auburn wins in Baton Rouge for the most recent time. Oh why does this number have to start with a 1?? Gross. Tommy Tuberville brings his guys back out onto the field to smoke cigars and curses the Auburn fortunes in Death Valley for decades to come.
2001 - 9/11 Game. Auburn/LSU is set for September 15th, but pushed back because of 9/11. LSU gets stronger as the season goes along, and thwacks us in Baton Rouge. Damon Duval fights a band member.
2004 - Hurricane Game. In the afterglow of Hurricane Ivan, Auburn upends the defending national champions with Jason Campbell’s last minute touchdown to Courtney Taylor. Nick Saban, Will Muschamp, and Jimbo Fisher are all on the LSU sideline.
2005 - Poor John Vaughn. Vaughn misses five field goals, including a doink in overtime to tie it, and Kenny Irons’ 200-yard day is wasted as Auburn loses again in Death Valley.
2006 - The Totally Not Pass Interference Officials Finally Made a Good Call Game. LSU gets unlucky with a controversial no-call on a play late in Auburn territory when Zach Gilbert and Eric Brock get entangled with an LSU receiver. Auburn stops LSU short of the goal line on the final play of the game to win 7-3. Oh, and an LSU fan doused our eagle with a drink and got arrested.
2007 - Les Miles Rabbit’s Foot Game. Instead of going for the easy field goal and certain win, Les Miles elects to throw to the end zone in the closing seconds. The pass is completed, when a bobble may have killed the clock. LSU loses twice during the regular season and still backdoors into the national championship.
2010 - Cam Newton Heisman Game. If the Iron Bowl cemented the Heisman that year for our large adult son, this was the game that vaulted him to the top of the polls. He runs for 217 yards and two scores, with one the scintillating affair where he dodges nearly every member of the LSU defense. Auburn goes to #1 in the country after this win and takes the national title a couple months later.
2016 - The You’re Fired Game. Loser of this game was pretty much guaranteed to fire the coach. Auburn gets six Daniel Carlson field goals and LSU appears to score the game-winning touchdown on the final play of regulation, but a review shows that the offense wasn’t set and the clock had run out before the snap. Les Miles gets fired the next morning.
2017 - Gus Hotseat Part 1,000. Auburn builds a 20-0 lead in Baton Rouge but tightens up and lets it slip away in the second half, falling 27-23. Auburn wins out in the regular season and wins the SEC West. This game, however, falls into one of the 3-4 most inexcusable losses under Gus Malzahn along with 2014 Texas A&M, 2016 Georgia, and 2018 Tennessee (and now 2020 South Carolina).
2018 - Pass Interference Revenge for LSU. Auburn blows another double digit lead and Joe Burrow leads a game-winning drive that culminates in a walk-off field goal for LSU and a 22-21 final score.
2019 - Nobody comes close to LSU in the regular season except for Auburn in Baton Rouge. In the end, a penalty on LSU allows LSU to run out the clock and preserve the win on the way to a perfect season.
See, if we’d just had a few of these happen in March, the Butterfly Effect of mojo would be more than capable of wiping out COVID, bringing back Kobe, dousing the wildfires, and doling out another round of stimulus checks to the country.
Or, we could be in for something truly epic tomorrow. Let’s consider the facts again.
Gone are the ultra-talented offensive cogs from last season for LSU. Heisman winner Joe Burrow, along with his trusty skill position players, most of his offensive line, and his wunderkind passing game coordinator are all in new spots (the NFL). Steve Ensminger is in charge of the show once again. Dave Aranda is leading Baylor, while people are laughing at Bo Pelini’s Baton Rouge buyout considering how poor the LSU defense has been this year.
They lost to Mike Leach, who hasn’t won another game yet. Think about that. MIKE LEACH MADE LSU WALK THE PLANK AND THEN DID SO HIMSELF. Mutually assured destruction from the Pirate. They also lost to Missouri and first year coach Eli Drinkwitz. LSU looked great against South Carolina, but that was at home, at night, where you can never pick against the Bayou Bengals unless you’re Troy.
Meanwhile... you know how this season has gone for Auburn.
Earlier this year, our own James Jones wrote a nice little ditty examining the history of BARN CHEATIN’. That only reviewed our controversial wins against the Tide after we were accused of nothing more than playing “gotchya and grabass” by the full diaper havers across the state.
Interesting only if you’re a mouthbreathing nitwit. Equitable if you’re the ones on the field trying to play actual football instead of gotchya and grabass. https://t.co/sum1sEFeXM
— Roll ‘Bama Roll (@rollbamaroll) April 22, 2020
Now, however, they may not be alone. Arkansas has joined Club Barn Cheatin’ —
I’m gonna be bitter for so long. In WHAT WORLD is that not a fumble!? WE WON THAT GAME pic.twitter.com/eGxwcFYlD9
— WoOoO Pig SpoOoOoky (@ArkansasFight) October 11, 2020
Then Ole Miss joined the group with these shirts and the sympathy of Alabama beat writers. It’s an alliance!
You can now grab yours today! : https://t.co/r4qq8zrpQR pic.twitter.com/W2cOnbQHWj
— Randy Jewel Morgan (@RebelNutt18) October 27, 2020
C’mon, you know we only cheat by funneling cash to star players through their family’s church and then strong-arming the NCAA into keeping them eligible by having a large yella man who likes to hit stuff with his own brand of 2x4s. Can’t you tell that’s how we run this game by all of the blue chip recruits we’ve gotten lately? Huh? Oh.
Anyway, Auburn has had some major buildup coming in the form of karma against LSU. The double digit leads blown over the past two years, with all the pass interference calls going against Auburn in 2018 are sure to somehow Yeerk their way into the back judge’s ear and force him to throw a flag on the purple Tigers. It’s going to happen. We’re going to get an all-SEC West alliance of Barn Cheatin’ going on in 2020.
Now, I’d love that, because it means we can win all of our division games, pissing off EVERYBODY and getting some victories while we’re at it in the year that doesn’t matter.
Let’s boil down the wild games in this series to a few choice words.
Photo finish. Last second. Controversial. Turnovers. Missed kicks. Poor clock management. Crowd involvement. Heisman winners. Natural disasters. Nicotine.
Now, to create the perfect outcome for tomorrow’s game, adding in Halloween and a full moon and a pandemic and the election.
Auburn and LSU will play a perfectly fun first half. There will be a bunch of points scored because neither defense is really all that good. LSU hits two or three big pass plays, and Auburn gets a breakaway run from Tank Bigsby and a long touchdown through the air. There will be a gadget play that works and one that blows up spectacularly. I have no designation on which team those happen to.
After halftime, it’s a close game, but LSU builds their lead in the third quarter with some defensive adjustments and another long pass play for a score. As the fourth quarter starts, Auburn trails by two scores. Then the turnovers happen. Whoever’s playing quarterback tomorrow will throw a pick, leading to a score for Auburn, and then in the final five minutes, Bo Nix and Tank Bigsby lead a methodical drive down the field and Auburn goes up by a point.
LSU will have a couple minutes left to salvage a win, needing only a field goal. They quickly move into range for the kick, but in their greed they go for the end zone from the Auburn 25. Offensive pass interference is called on a play where both the receiver and defender are hand-fighting, and the 15-yard penalty moves LSU back to where only a 57-yard field goal would win the game. With just five seconds left, Ed Orgeron trots out the kicking team, but the kick misses. Auburn roughs the kicker but doesn’t get called for it. Tigers (blue ones) win.
In the aftermath, Donald Trump criticizes Ed Orgeron for bad coaching on Twitter, and says that Big Ten football is way better (they love him in Iowa!). The southern states revolt and go blue. LSU joins Barn Cheatin’, Inc. and as a full moon sets on Halloween on the Plains, 2020 is put back in order.

Gary Neville: Liverpool a level above Manchester City | Football News
Tumblr media
Gary Neville insists the application Liverpool are showing so far this season is a level above that of Manchester City.
Jurgen Klopp’s side have started the defence of the Premier League title they won last season with three straight wins, including an impressive victory at Stamford Bridge against Chelsea and a 3-1 success at home to Arsenal on Monday Night Football.
Meanwhile, Manchester City started with victory at Wolves but Pep Guardiola’s side were left stunned after a 5-2 defeat against Leicester City at the Etihad Stadium on Super Sunday.
Gary Neville commentated on both Liverpool’s win against Arsenal and City’s defeat to Leicester and speaking on The Gary Neville Podcast, the former Manchester United defender was effusive in his praise for Liverpool and gave a title warning to Guardiola and his side…

Image: Jurgen Klopp’s side have made a perfect start to their Premier league title defence
I picked Manchester City before the start of the season, when we were asked to make our predictions, just on the basis that they would respond. I thought they would do more in the transfer market, but I’m in the position whereby, and it’s only three games in, I’m going to change my mind.
It’s not because of Sunday. I was obviously at the Etihad on Sunday to see Leicester beat City 5-2, but just watching Liverpool, even in that first game against Leeds where some people took out of it that they weren’t at their best, they were sloppy, and you could get at them.
That was a mad game, the type of which I have been involved in myself and if you come out of those games on top, when you are not at your best, it demonstrates something.
They also signed two players after that game and then they went to Stamford Bridge to face Chelsea and they did the business. They then have Arsenal at home, another team near the top of the league, and they’ve done the business again.

Against Arsenal, the first-half performance was outstanding. When you are up in the gantry, you see more in terms of the shape against on corners. They were really serious about their work. Their reaction to giving the ball away was impeccable all over the pitch.
The front three set the tone for it, but everybody else backs them up. They were absolutely outstanding.
You can take Jordan Henderson and James Milner out, who used to be the workhorses of this team, and they are all workhorses now.
Naby Keita is somebody who has taken a couple of years to get up to speed, but now you see him play and it looks like he’s getting there. Fabinho moves through the game and doesn’t break sweat. Georginio Wijnaldum is a player that you never really give him the credit, but he does everything really well.
The whole team, from the goalkeeper right the way through to Roberto Firmino at the top of the pitch, is just outstanding.
‘Signings a statement of Liverpool intent’

Image: Diogo Jota celebrates after scoring Liverpool’s third goal of the game
It was a brilliant performance against Arsenal. You are watching a team that’s in sync, together in possession and out of possession. They can control the game, they can counter-attack and they can press. They can mix it with you if needed and can score from set pieces. They can do everything you’d want a good football team to do.
The signings of Thiago Alcantara and Diogo Jota were big moves because it signalled intent. They needed to strengthen in midfield with somebody who can play, control the game and do something a little bit different to the rest of them, and then Jota up front, who provides a real quality back up to the front three, but doesn’t unnerve them to the point where they want to leave. It was a clever signing.
It’s a really top team and we know that from what they’ve achieved over the last couple of years, but it looks like they’ve come back to do it again.

Jamie Carragher says Diogo Jota has made a great start at Liverpool after scoring against Arsenal but will ultimately be judged on his work off the ball.

I talk about the fact that players are missing, and in the past 12 months or so we’ve mentioned it I don’t know how many times. I can mention that they’ve had a week delay in starting and they might not be up to speed in a fitness point of view. I can mention all of these things.
We know Pep Guardiola doesn’t have the team he wants on the pitch at the moment, he’s signing another centre-back.
But when I watch the application of Liverpool in the game against Arsenal, and the application of Manchester City, it’s a different level. And that’s the one thing that Pep Guardiola will really need to affect.
For two seasons, their transition from losing the ball to winning the ball back was off the scale, like we’ve never seen. He was bringing Barcelona to the Premier League.
Nev’s title warning for City
Tumblr media Tumblr media

Former Manchester United midfielder Roy Keane says he was ‘shocked’ by Man City’s performance as they lost 5-2 at home to Leicester.
They’ve stepped off it. They stepped off it last season and I think at that point I felt with the levels they’d reached they were always going to go over the edge a little bit. I expected them to start this season really, really at it.
Against Wolves they were good, but Sunday was really worrying because I just didn’t see that same urgency and application to the game.
Pep Guardiola is the best coach in the world, his team have been outstanding, and they will get better, no doubt, but he’s got to be careful.
They dropped eight points to Liverpool in the first eight games of last season and found they couldn’t catch up. They can’t afford to do that against this Liverpool team, it’s too good.

The start of Western Illinois’ NCAA tournament run in Year 22, continued
Tumblr media
The Leathernecks enter the NCAA tournament as a No. 11 seed with an impossibly tough draw.
Welcome back to our simulated dynasty with the Western Illinois Leathernecks in College Hoops 2K8. You can find a full explanation of this project + spoiler-free links to previous seasons here. Check out the introduction to this series from early April for full context. As a reminder, we simulate every game in this series and only control the recruiting and coaching strategies.
We pick up with the Leathernecks in the first round of the 2029 NCAA tournament, but first here’s a recap of everything that’s happened so far this season.
Coming off a disappointing loss in the round of 32 to No. 1 seed Xavier last season, the Leathernecks enter the new year ranked No. 19 in the preseason polls. We have three new starters.
We went 6-5 in the non-conference schedule before sweeping the Summit League and winning the conference tournament once again. We earned a No. 11 seed to the NCAA tournament, entering at 27-5 overall.
We recruited for one scholarship, but didn’t land anyone yet.

Here’s a look at our roster heading into the NCAA tournament:
Tumblr media
No one can doubt the overall talent level of this roster. We’re rated as a 100 overall for a reason — we have a great combination of experienced top-end talent plus depth. It is fair to wonder who are takeover scorer is going to be, though.
I have full confidence in Kevin Brazzle, the 7’2 junior center and projected top pick in the NBA draft. He’s put up numbers all year and figures to give a consistent scorer and rebounder inside. Who steps up on the perimeter is a better question. Wilbur Ager, our lone senior, has had a good career thus far, but he’s never had to be the man in the shadow of Allen Cunningham and others. Now we need him to play like a star. Does Ager have a Wilky Henry-like run in him? The spotlight is also waiting for Mathew Alloway, now a junior and a starter every year he’s been eligible. Alloway has the size (6’7), he has the shooting, and he brings it defensively. We’ve had him circled as a future star for years. The future is here.
Point guard Jamie Burke and power forward L.F. Neal, both first-year starters as juniors, are less accomplished but still talented. Our bench has a 300-pound center in Artie Snipes, a 6’10 wing in Jitim Dupree, and our best three-point shooter in 6-foot guard Koko Reeves. We’re good enough to lean on a star-by-committee approach, but someone is going to have to step up against an incredibly formidable UConn team.
The Huskies have been killer throughout this sim, one of only four programs to win two titles (the others: Louisville, Maryland, UCLA) while we have three. UConn knocked us out in the Elite Eight back in Year 18. They have a loaded roster once again. Both teams enter the game rated as a 100 overall:
Tumblr media
Maryland is likely waiting in the round of 32 and top-seed Xavier is likely waiting in the Sweet 16. Our Leathernecks are used to getting shafted by the committee, and it happened in a major way this year. This might be our toughest draw ever.
We watched this game on Twitch together on Sunday night. As always, I’m not controlling Western Illinois during the game, we’re watching a simulated game. Unfortunately the video transfer to YouTube is taking forever and still isn’t fully uploaded even after 12+ hours. I’ll add videos in this post when it’s complete.
Let’s go!

Win, 103-89! Second half team!
This was getting dark for a minute there. Led by my long-lost relative Donny O’Donnell (36 points), UConn opened up a double digit lead late in the first half. That’s when I switched us into a 1-2-1-1 zone full court press defense. We started forcing turnovers, which led to easy offense, which led to us taking control of the game. We dropped 65 damn points in the second half, which is just amazing.
twitch_clip
I loved what I saw out of Alloway, finishing with 19 points on 3-of-3 shooting from three-point range. Ager struggled to shoot the ball from the outside (1-of-5 from three) but still found a way score 17 points and also had four steals.
twitch_clip
Our front court gave us a great complement next to our guards. Neal played the game of his life: 20 points, 11 rebounds, and five stocks. He’s had a quiet career so far but we don’t win that game without him. Brazzle continues to be the picture of consistency by going off for another fat double-double of 17 points and 16 rebounds.
Less good: point guard Jamie Burke, who finished with eight turnovers turnovers and 0-of-4 shooting from three.
We absolutely would have lost this game without the switch to a full court press defense. The final scoreboard says we won by 14, but man does it feel like that’s a game we easily could have lost. Even still, it feels great to beat UConn in the tournament. Unfortunately, it isn’t getting any easier from here.
Our next opponent in the next our is No. 3 seed Maryland, who beat No. 14 Samford in their opening game.
No. 11 seed Western Illinois vs. No. 3 seed Maryland, round of 32, 2029 NCAA tournament
Maryland has been one of the better programs in the country throughout this sim. Like UConn, the Terps have two national championships while consistently being a factor late in the tournament.
Maryland enters the game as a 100 overall — the same rating as us. Here’s a look at their roster:
Tumblr media
You can see that Maryland doesn’t have a ton of size, with no one taller than 6’7 listed on the first page of the roster. In a lot of ways, this Terps roster reminds me of the Xavier team that knocked us out in the round of 32 last year: lots of dynamic guards and wings who can knock down shots. Like us, they have six players rated in the 90s.
Let’s cut down on the turnovers, defend the three-point line, and feed Brazzle inside when we have the ball. We’re going to need to play better than we did against UConn to win this game.
We watched this game on Twitch on Sunday night. Once again: it’s a simulated game; I’m not controlling Western Illinois on the court.
This group knows the pain of losing in the round of 32 because it happened to us last year. A win here and we likely get a rematch against Xavier, who knocked us out last season. We want a rematch. Let’s go!

Win, 95-91! We juuust had enough to hang on there in the second half.
We were in control for most of that game and I was feeling pretty good about it. We took a nine-point lead into the half on a Wilbur Ager tip-in. We pushed that lead to 16 points early in the second half, but credit Maryland for refusing to go away. The Terps went on a run in the last five minutes and hit a three-pointer with 17.5 seconds left to make it a three-point game. It was a two-point game with 4.5 seconds left when Jamie Burke missed the front end of a 1-and-1 at the foul line. Fortunately, Alloway grabbed the offensive rebound and iced the win at the line.
While I didn’t switch to a full court press defense in this one, we actually had more steals (12) than we did vs. UConn (10). I thought our defense set the tone once again. It had to be that way considering we couldn’t get a good look from behind the arc all night. Maryland hit 10 more three-pointers than us — 13 to three — but we were able to stay alive by attempting three times as many free throws. It wasn’t a pretty offensive performance for us, but it was enough to get the win.
Brazzle was a monster and really does feel like the trump card during this tournament run. It is so nice to have a 7’2 center we can consistently go to when we need a bucket. He was excellent to finish with 27 points and 14 rebounds on 13-of-20 shooting from the field. That performances locks him in as a top-five center in program history, I think. We lose without him because no one really got going.
twitch_clip
Alloway, Ager, and Neal were all solid but unspectacular. Maryland’s star wing Ross Pasco ran all over us, going off for 33 points on seven made threes. That’s two wings putting up massive individual scoring games on us so far. Something to monitor.
Ager still made big plays when we needed him to.
twitch_clip
I am officially worried about Burke at this point. We’ve had so many subpar point guards over the years and there’s no way to really know until you see them out there. Burke was a very solid four-star recruit at No. 71 overall in his class — the type of player we’d take every time. He has succumb to the same issues as Armien Amous and Angel Keita before him though: too many turnover. After eight turnovers against UConn, he had five or six this game. We need to take better care of the ball.
As we sim to the next week, we have some shocking news: No. 7 seed Richmond stunned top-seeded Xavier in the round of 32! That means we face the Spiders with an Elite Eight trip on the line!
No. 11 Western Illinois vs. No. 7 Richmond, Sweet 16, 2029 NCAA tournament
Every deep NCAA tournament run requires at least a little bit of luck, and there’s no doubt we got it in a big way with this matchup. Xavier appeared to have the most players rated in the 90s — seven — of any team in the tournament this year. They also demolished us on this stage last year. I am feeling so much more confident against Richmond.
How the hell did the Spiders beat Xavier? Xavier was a 100 overall and Richmond is a 91 overall. Here’s a look at Richmond’s roster, with only one player rated in the 90s.
Tumblr media
This is a game we should win, but I’m sure Xavier thought that, too. One win away from the Elite Eight, let’s get it.
We also watched this game on Twitch on Sunday night, the first time we’ve ever streamed three games on the same night. Why stop now? Standard disclaimer goes here: I’m not controlling WIU, we’re watching a simulated game.
Let’s go!

Win, 136-71. Absolute domination out of our ‘Necks. We’re going to the Elite Eight!
This was a beatdown from the opening tip. We got out to a 10-point lead in the first seven minutes and never looked back. We were up 30 by halftime and had already pulled our starters.
First things first: shout-out to our embattled point guard Jamie Burke. who finished with an exquisite line of 12 points, 11 assists, zero turnovers. He also hit 4-of-6 shots from three-point range. Exactly what we want out of our point guards. Just a textbook great PG performance.
twitch_clip
Ager was also awesome to finish with 19 points. He was super aggressive from the jump and it looked like he knew no one on Richmond could match his physicality. That was tight. Alloway also played an efficient and wonderful game with 14 points on 6-of-8 shooting, all in the first half I think.
How about our defense? We had 17 steals, a new high for this tournament run. Unreal.
Looking back through the records, that’s our biggest win ever. 65-point win! The bench also beat Richmond by 30 in the second half. Just ridiculous.
I thought the future of the program was on full display as the bench got some run with a big lead. Wow, were they great. Jitim Dupre: 22 points, 10 rebounds, four steals, three makes from deep. Edwin Wolfe led us in scoring!?! I never would have guessed. The former five-star JUCO recruit is now a RS sophomore and rated an 80 overall. That’s disappointing by our standards, but he played so much better than his ratings in this game. Wolfe finished with 26 points on 10-of-16 shooting from the field and 6-of-12 shooting from three.
twitch_clip
Artie Snipes also deserves a shout-out with 20 points off the bench. He’ll be our starting center once Brazzle bounces to the draft after this year and it feels like we won’t be losing much at center with him in the lineup.
That sets up a game vs. No. 8 seed Tennessee. The Vols stunned No. 1 seed Stanford in the round of 32 and then took out defending national champs BYU in the Sweet 16 to force their way into the Elite Eight. If you had this game on your bracket, more power to you.
No. 11 seed Western Illinois vs. No. 8 seed Tennessee, Elite Eight, 2029 NCAA tournament
The Elite Eight has been a nightmare round for us in the past — most memorably when we saw three straight seasons end in this round from Year 16, Year 17, and Year 18. The allure of the Final Four is so strong that guys start to get tense. You can’t really blame them, but we need to be better today.
Tennessee looks solid but not overwhelming from a talent perspective. I think this is the first time we’ve ever played them? Here’s a look at the Vols’ roster:
Tumblr media
Guess what? We playing this game out too. A four-game stream. Win or lose, this will be our last game of the night.
I’m not controlling WIU, but you know that by now.
Final Four on the line. Let’s goOoOoOoO!

Win, 100-92! We’re going to the Final Four for the fifth time in program history, and we will be looking for our fourth national title once we get there.
Ohhhhh my gosh, that was close. The second half felt as tense as any game we’ve ever played in this dynasty. Tennessee refused to go away, hitting threes, getting and-ones, forcing steals — they really made us work for it. Shot of the night goes to our senior, Wilbur Ager. With our Leathernecks up two points with 18 seconds left and about five seconds separating the shot clock from the game clock, Ager fired a catch-and-shoot three-pointer that was cash to seal the win.
I was so nervous when he shot this, and elated when it went in.
twitch_clip
What a shot. If he misses, the Vols have the ball and a chance to win the game on the last possession. Instead, it goes in, Ager is the hero, and we advance to the Final Four. Wow.
I felt like Nick Nurse in this game: I was riding my starters until the very end. All of them were excellent. Burke went all 40 minutes and only scored one point, but he finished with 13 assists and limited his turnovers. Alloway played like a flat-out star with 28 points on 12-of-17 shooting. Ager hit a very nice 6-of-9 shots from deep. Brazzle had another ridiculous double-double with 25 points and 15 rebounds.
L.F. Neal also made two super tough field goals in crunch-time to help seal the win:
twitch_clip
Unreal. I never thought this team would make the Final Four, not after losing three starters and potentially the GOAT Leatherneck in Allen Cunningham. I thought our tournament draw was far too difficult for a run like this. I’m so happy I was wrong.
We’ve been to the Final Four four other times. Three times we won the national title. Let’s go back banner No. 4.
Our opponent in the Final Four is No. 1 seed George Washington. GW has a created player at center in former bracket contest runner-up Steven Frye. We made Frye as a three-star recruit back in the day but he’s really developed into a great player. Frye vs. Brazzle will be a signature matchup inside. GW is rated as a 98 overall, so this won’t be easy.
We’re going to stream this game on Wednesday, September 16 at 8:30 p.m. ET on Twitch. Here’s how you can watch the game:

Premier League New Year's Day predictions: Lawro v BGT comedian and Liverpool fan Kojo Anim

Premier League New Year's Day predictions: Lawro v BGT comedian and Liverpool fan Kojo Anim
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sheffield United start 2020 just two points off fifth place in the Premier League table before a first visit to leaders Liverpool for 13 years on Thursday.
“If I had to name a manager of the year midway through the season then it would be Sheffield United boss Chris Wilder,” BBC football expert Mark Lawrenson said.
“The great thing about them is they have shown every promoted team that they do not have to spend fortunes if you’re well coached, well organised and difficult to beat.
“It’s different for Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp and all the other managers near the top because they have got real quality. Wilder has done a fantastic job.”
Lawro is making predictions for all 380 top-flight matches this season, against a variety of guests.
For the first round of Premier League fixtures of 2020, he is up againstBritain’s Got Talent comedian and Liverpool fan Kojo Anim.
Kojo, who is about to embark on a UK tour, is understandably is pretty happy with the way the Reds are doing right now.
He told BBC Sport: “Nobody is celebrating anything yet but with what I have been through in the past few years with that team, I think I deserve to enjoy myself at the moment.
“It does not look like there will be a dramatic end to the title race like there was last season when Manchester City pipped us at the post, but being totally honest, I don’t care!
“It has been 30 years since we last won it, and I would happily have had it totally wrapped up by Christmas if I could have done.”
Kojo is friends with Liverpool defender Joe Gomez and former Reds striker Daniel Sturridge and is a regular at Anfield
Kojo got into football and the Reds when he started watching John Barnes play for Liverpool in the 1980s – and told him that in person when he bumped into him a few weeks ago.
“I was at the station, on my way to watching Liverpool play Salzburg and I told him that I was left-footed so his position on the wing was always where I played – well, when I could,” he said. “Sometimes I was left-back, and sometimes I was on the bench.
“Could I have made it as a professional myself? Well, I had trials at QPR’s school of excellence when I was a kid and used to really enjoy it.
“Then I stopped enjoying it because I used to play with the older guys, who knew I was good but would always stamp their authority on me, and that is how I lost my confidence – then I started telling jokes instead, and I think I am a bit more of a natural at that.
“I was good at football, but looking back, that bit of bullying I got on the football pitch changed my life.”
Premier League predictions – week 21 Result Lawro Kojo WEDNESDAY, 1 JAN Brighton v Chelsea x-x 0-2 2-2 Burnley v Aston Villa x-x 2-0 1-2 Newcastle v Leicester x-x 2-0 1-3 Southampton v Tottenham x-x 0-2 0-3 Watford v Wolves x-x 2-1 0-2 Man City v Everton x-x 2-0 1-1 Norwich v Crystal Palace x-x 2-1 3-1 West Ham v Bournemouth x-x 2-0 1-0 Arsenal v Man Utd x-x 2-2 1-3 THURSDAY, 2 JAN Liverpool v Sheff Utd x-x 3-0 1-1
A correct result (picking a win, draw or defeat) is worth10points. The exact score earns40points.
LAWRO’S PREDICTIONS
All kick-offs 15:00 GMT unless stated.
WEDNESDAY, 1 JANUARY
Brighton v Chelsea (12:30 GMT)
Brighton fans might think I’ve suddenly fallen out of love with them but I haven’t. They’re going to be absolutely fine this season but I feel Chelsea have a better side and are decent on the road.
Chelsea were good in their last game as they came from behind to win against Arsenal. Frank Lampard deserves praise for changing his tactics mid-match. All of a sudden everybody started pouring forward and they looked a completely different team.
Lawro’s prediction:0-2
Kojo’s prediction:You never know what you are going to get from Chelsea this season. 2-2
Burnley v Aston Villa (12:30 GMT)
Burnley have lost three of their last four home games, which is very unlike them. I think they’ll be ready for Aston Villa, who are too easy to score against.
I listened to Villa’s complaints after their loss to Watford but they need to stop worrying about things that have gone against them and start winning some games.
Villa need to show a little bit of backbone.
Lawro’s prediction:2-0
Kojo’s prediction:1-2
Newcastle v Leicester
Newcastle are very difficult to predict. They don’t lose many games at home but against Everton last time out they were outplayed before coming back – only to be undone by a sucker punch.
In fairness to Leicester boss Brendan Rodgers, he made nine changes in the last game at West Ham and still got a win. That’s good management. He knows he has got players who can come in, win games, and not seriously weaken the side.
However, I fancy Newcastle to bounce back in this one.
Lawro’s prediction:2-0
Kojo’s prediction:Leicester have had a tough Christmas but Jamie Vardy has still got his tail up. 1-3
Southampton v Tottenham
Tottenham are a bit of a conundrum.
It’s taken Jose Mourinho a lot longer to mould Spurs into the team he wants – and it may only really happen when he has brought in players he wants.
I feel they do have so much quality that if they get it right against Southampton, who are on a nice little run, then they will win comfortably.
Lawro’s prediction:0-2
Kojo’s prediction:Jose Mourinho has brought a bit of stability and discipline to a very talented squad. 0-3
Watford v Wolves
Watford’s players are enjoying life under Nigel Pearson. I watched his first game in charge at Liverpool and they created more chances than any other team I have seen visit Anfield this season.
Wolves have a bunch of good players – not just four or five. They caused Liverpool problems last time out in a game overshadowed by VAR, which is turning into a bit of a farce.
Media playback is not supported on this device
MOTD2: ‘VAR is affecting spirit of the game’
Watford, though, are full of confidence after two wins and a draw in their last three matches.
Lawro’s prediction:2-1
Kojo’s prediction:0-2
Man City v Everton (17:30)
Carlo Ancelotti has had a really good start as Everton boss. In the last match at Newcastle, the Toffees looked a really good and full of confidence for half an hour – before revisiting their old mistakes from this Premier League season.
Manchester City are inconsistent like lots of teams in the Premier League. They look a little bit flat but Sergio Aguero is back and scoring again.
I do think City will go on a good run and their eyes might possibly be on the cup competitions – especially the Champions League.
Lawro’s prediction:2-0
Kojo’s prediction:I don’t see Liverpool going the whole season undefeated, but I think Manchester City are going to lose again at some point as well. They could easily drop points here because Everton are full of confidence under Carlo Ancelotti. 1-1
Norwich v Crystal Palace (17:30)
There’s a real spirit about Crystal Palace. Roy Hodgson’s side have come from behind to pick up points against Brighton and West Ham recently.
Norwich are not playing badly and are creating lots of chances. They’re also due a win and went close to beating Tottenham on Saturday.
Lawro’s prediction:2-1
Kojo’s prediction:3-1
West Ham v Bournemouth (17:30)
The return of David Moyes is just what West Ham need. He’ll get them organised and difficult to beat. All this ‘the fans aren’t happy he’s coming back’… the fans have got to be realistic.
He’s been appointed to make sure they stay up. His record is very good and if you look at how many times he has been a manager in the Premier League, he knows all about it and how it works.
David Moyes’ record at West Ham in his first spell
I know Bournemouth have been hit by injuries but they look flat. I think West Ham will get a bounce because of the new manager.
Lawro’s prediction:2-0
Kojo’s prediction:1-0
Arsenal v Man Utd (20:00)
Arsenal are the poorest I have seen them for many, many years. They simply cannot defend and their defensive issues are not going to be resolved anytime soon. Mikel Arteta has his work cut out trying to sort it all out.
That said, I think this will be an open game and I see them getting something against Manchester United.
United have had a good festive programme so far but they have their own fragilities.
Lawro’s prediction:2-2
Kojo’s prediction:Mikel Arteta has got a lot to fix at Arsenal, and it is not going to happen overnight. 1-3
THURSDAY, 2 JANUARY
Liverpool v Sheff Utd (20:00 GMT)
Sheffield United are heading to Anfield on the back of their first away defeat of the season, while Liverpool just keep churning out results.
I have been impressed with the Blades this season. They have been fabulous – long may it continue.
But I cannot see beyond a home win.
Lawro’s prediction:3-0
Kojo’s prediction:We won at Sheffield United in September but it felt like the only game this season that we could have lost. So, even though we are at home I am a bit wary, and I am expecting a tough evening. 1-1
