Despite what my sister may think, I don't enjoy being a liar, so,
Here is the greatest manga that you've never heard of:
A Terrified Teacher at Ghoul School (JP: Youkkai Gakkou No Sensei Hajimemashita)
So, I'm not one to make too many essays or go on and ramble about something online, however, this series is just not popular enough in my opinion.
(everything will be under the cut, don't wanna bother people! and warning, this is long.)
So, what is A Terrifed Teacher At Ghoul School?
Terrified Teach (what I shall be calling it) is a supernatural, slice of life, and comedy manga created by Mai Tanaka. The story revolves around a young man named Haruaki Abe who is a cowardly man obsessed with sailor uniforms (worry not! he really just likes the uniforms and admiring them).
He has dreams of being a teacher, however, at his first teaching job, he ran out withing a short amount of time. He took a year off from finding anymore jobs, until he's approached by the principal of a high school and is asked to be the new Japanese Literature Teacher. He accepts, and is soon whisked away to Hyakki Academy.
Something he doesn't realize is that Hyakki Academy is not a school for humans, rather it is a school for youkai, and features a wide range of youkai that attend and teach at the school. And while he starts working at the school, he also learned that he has anti-youkai powers that can siphon out a youkai's spirit energy.
He spends his time at Hyakki Academy trying to become more confident and hone his anti-youkai powers. He also manages to befriend many of his students and some of the teachers at the school.
I managed to make that description without any spoilers, everything I just explained (minus the befriending) is gone over in the first chapter.
Why are you advertising this manga?
I love this manga! And, there are three main reasons I love it:
The Characters and Relationships
The Arcs and Storylines
The Way Mai Tanaka Writes the Story
And so let's get into these reasons
The Characters and Relationships!
So, we start with probably the biggest factor to comedy and slice of life series, the characters and how they interact with each other.
When it comes to Haruaki, it took a while for anyone to become friendly with him or fond of him. The only people who seemingly got close with him quickly were Maizuka Mamekichi and Koutarou Hijita (though, Hijita was a dick to him at first).
Aside from Haruaki, our major characters include:
Sano Mikoto: A rather sadistic and secretive young man. He dislikes showing affection and tends to be embarrassed when complimenting Haruaki
Mamekichi Maizuka: A cheeky young ma who likes to be carried. He tries to seem very cute and innocent, however, he has a clear dark side, likely due to how his family is.
Hijita Koutarou: He is a lazy person, and dislikes doing any home/classwork. He always tries to find ways to look at girls, however is usually stopped.
Zashiki Beniko: A shut-in who has a way with technology. She likes playing video games and didn't go into class for a long period of time due to playing video games.
Tamao Akisame: A young man who isn't the sharpest tool in the shed. However, with Haruaki's help, he tries to get better at his exams and his understanding of Japanese and literature.
Nyuudou Rensuke: A smart young man, also hides his past and family situation. He tends to be very kind and a bit of a mentor to his classmates, however, he can get angry and violent easily.
Utagawa Kuniko: A kind and sweet young woman. She is also smart, and works with Nyuudou to lead the class. She tries to aid typically the girls in the class in various things
Miki Rintarou: The youkai-studies teacher, and a terrible drunkard. He also hides his family situation and tends to keep himself far from other people.
Hatanaka Izuna: The spookology teacher and discipline teacher. He tries to keep a cool head, however, has a shorter and more explosive fuse than Nyuudou, due to him being a former delinquent.
The Prinicpal: The principal of the school, with a very secretive past. Most of the teachers are unsure why he decided to hire Haruaki in the first place, and has a dislike of some of his staff for destroying his school... various times.
And the list goes on with characters who aren't major throughout the series, but are important in certain arcs and parts.
When it comes to friendships, they tend to be between characters who have known each other for a while or have some sort of connection.
The friendships that the series starts with and develops are:
Sano - Mame: Sano is a person who adores small animals, and especially seems to like tanukis. Sano likes carrying around Mame and hates it whenever someone injures or insults him, being quick to anger.
Hijita - Beniko: Hijita and Beniko are childhood friends, and Hijita is the person who got Beniko into video games and he blames himself for her becoming a shut in.
Sano - Mame - Beniko - Hijita: They often hang out together on this off days. They also scheme together, though Sano tries to leave himself out of it and tries to pull Mame out of it too
Nyuudou - Tamao: They're best friends. Tamao initially wants to be Nyuudou's cat when they grow up, though, he knows Nyuudou would find this stupid.
Nyuudou - Utagawa: They're both the class representatives and have great chemistry when it comes to them working together.
Hatanaka - Haruaki - Miki: Hatanaka and Miki were friends in high school and they are also the only teachers who aren't afraid of Haruaki and his anti-youkai powers.
Tanaka does an incredible job at showing the relationships between the characters and developing the relationships, especially when it comes to Haruaki and his students, like Sano and Nyuudou. And the way she crafts the characters to fit so perfectly in the series and to make their actions and goals seem so believable and to make the reader wonder about what one character said in an early chapter and make a full arc/set of chapters surrounding it.
2. The Arcs and Storylines
I have had a debate about my sister as to what constitutes as an "arc" compared to "a set of chapters focused on something", so I shall be using my definition as an arc.
To say the exact amount of how many arcs there are would be impossible, but there are a few major ones, so, I'll say there about 5-7 arcs in this series, though, most are just in between/before the very major, plot heavy arcs.
And, like I said in the previous part, many arcs are callbacks to something a character had said in a previous chapter. Not only that, but these arcs and chapters and the characters that are important to the arcs change after them and it's noticeable and realistic.
Also, do not be fooled by the first few chapters of this series, as lighthearted and funny and sweet as they can be, this series will rip your heart out when it comes to some of the major arcs, especially later in the series.
She also makes the arcs make sense and sometimes when referencing back to some of the chapters, she even puts little notes as to which chapter she references to.
3. The Way Mai Tanaka Writes the Story
This was clear and obvious in the last part, but I adore the way Mai Tanaka writes the characters and the story.
When it comes to seeing character change like with Sano or Haruaki, when you re-read the series and see how they acted at the beginning compared to how they act in more recent chapters, there's a clear and obvious development in the way they act to their friends and how they think things through when it comes to different situation.
The way that she foreshadows future arcs is beautiful and it makes the reader think "Oh! I wonder what this means and what will happen here!" especially when you catch on to her foreshadowing and makes you wonder and wonder "What will happen here?!" and "Where will she go with this?!"
As a former BNHA fan and as someone who did this himself, I dislike it when things seem to made up on the fly. Of course, not everything in a series will be meticulously planned out for more authors and artists, that's a hard thing to do. It's not easy planning like 20-30 chapters in the future when you make a scene with some of your characters.
However, an author shouldn't just make things up on the fly for the majority of the series and draw it out longer than one might think it should. And Mai Tanaka does a good job at pacing her series, especially since it is a comedy and slice of life, which one can get away with making it a bit longer than usual than other types of genres, but even so, she made 38 chapters before hitting summer break with her characters. She has paced this story beautifully, and I am all here for it!
Now, I wrote this entire essay with my laptop at too low of health and I have not that much more to say, so I leave you all with this essay, and my suggestion:

A Terrified Teacher At Ghoul School Episode 19 Review - The Ghost Train
This was a fun episode! It’s a nice little buildup for the culture festival and future events as many things are revealed in this episode that will be important later on. I’m just worried if all of them can fit in the remaining five episodes…
Every school anime has to have a Culture Festival and this one is no exception. I found it funny how Hijita suggested a mermaid cafe in that both the girls and boys wear mermaid bikinis but Nyuudou rejects the idea harshly. They decide to go with an escape room after blowing up the school once again. If you think that’s a weird transition, it’s because they cut off a part in the manga where Haruaki chased after his students in rage after insulting sailor uniforms which made the class get the idea of an escape room. I guess now that I’m a manga reader, the fact that the anime cuts off chapters with important little details does make it a little frustrating. There are five episodes left and they’re already revealing a special visual for an upcoming big arc and I’m wondering how they’re going to squeeze all that in…
The episode is mainly about the ghost train, which is basically a two-chaptered mini arc so they got a lot of it animated—as they should because it is an important mini-arc that foreshadows a lot of future events. A lot of family details for the characters are revealed like Akira being Utagawa’s adopted dad, but the anime sort of glossed over that Akira usually takes in youkai that have nowhere to go and he adopted the Zashiki-warashi that Haruaki saved back in episode 12, so Utagawa has an adopted little sister as well. Nyuudou also has a human mom who passed away a few years ago, which was hinted at two episodes ago when Hijita mentioned interspecies couples. In turn, Haruaki reveals he has an older twin brother. I’m surprised that Nyuudou and Utagawa weren’t able to pick up on the fact that they did meet Amaaki back in episode 8 when he took over Haruaki’s class for a day. Akira also has a younger brother who works for Nyuudou’s family who will show up in a few episodes.
If you’re a fan of the freaky Akira, you’re absolutely eating well for this episode because he has so much screen time. He’s absolutely unhinged and I can see why he’s so popular. He’s unabashedly unashamed of anything he does. He injects a serum into a train? Train goes crazy. I like how that one ghost was eating his neck and he was like “Oh, you like to start from the neck?” He’s freaky AND kinky. I think that Shouta Aoi giving him a rather boyish voice does amplify the creepy factor he has.
I think the best part about this episode is that everyone plays a part. Akira and Hatanaka are in charge of the combat. Haruaki is the one responsible for exorcising the Kasha, even if it means revealing the secret of his exorcism powers to the youkai that were in the dark. Nyuudou was responsible for being able to spot the Kasha. Sano and Ebisu were also in charge of the combat, but Ebisu also got more screen time carrying Haruaki over to the Kasha’s location. Utagawa took Nyuudou and Haruaki to the roof. Marshmallow saved Akira and Hatanaka from getting consumed. It’s really nice to see people playing a part! The cast is so vast, yet the author really does know how to utilize them in mini or bigger arcs.
Overall, I’m anticipating how the anime will handle the remaining five episodes. What’s going to be cut out? What’s going to be kept? What are your thoughts on this episode?

Oh, I just noticed that Ame refers to Renren by copying the same way the others call him. Utagawa and the others call him Nyuudou, he calls him Nyuudou.
Renren's father calls him Rensuke, Ame calls him Rensuke too.
He probably said you three because he didn't know tf their names were 😭
Question, in the scene where Ame is pretending to be Haru in Renren's arc and talks about if they ever considered thinking about what Renren really wants, does he use his usual way of speaking with his accent or does he imitate Haru's way of speaking?
he does talk in standard japanese here as far as i can tell!
compared to here and afterwards where its very clearly his accent
doylist reason is probably so it doesnt give up the game too early

A Terrified Teacher At Ghoul School Episode 17 Review - The Last Days Of Summer
The summer vacation arc is coming to a close as the students spend their final days going to the beach and doing their remaining homework. It’s a fun episode overall as the boys get into shenanigans as well as having Sano and Haruaki learn a lot about youkai lore.
The beach portion of the episode was just fan service and comedy in one. Remember how we had reverse fan service in Episode 8 where the girls were peeping at the boys? Well, we finally get the usual anime fan service with the boys being the stars. They go to the beach to try and hit on girls using Sano as bait, but things go awry when Mame acts like a rabid Tanuki around some girls approaching him. Not only do the boys get fan service, but the girls of Class 2-3 also show up in cute swimsuits! I have to say, Renjou was serving cunt in that swimsuit and hat combination. The chapter that this half of the episode was based on is actually an earlier chapter that took place at the same time as Haruaki going to Rintaro’s family’s home.
The craziness of the beach portion comes in the form of two sea youkai trying to hit on some of the girls, so the boys step up to try and save them from the pests. Although Satelight’s art for this show isn’t the prettiest, I do admit that the watery effect for the two water youkais were really nice. The Funayurei is voiced by Jin Ogasawara who is a rookie. The Umibouzu is voiced by Fumiya Imai; if you’re familiar with Project Sekai and/or Given, he’s Akito Shinonome and Hiiragi from those respective media. Since Taito Ban voiced Shizusumi from Given, it’s basically Shizu throwing mud at Hiiragi in a way. Though, the Funayurei was quite a threat with his abilities. The Umibouzu didn’t show his ability as Fuji froze the water and getting him and some of the boys stuck. Unfortunately, the Funayurei messed with the wrong guy as destroying the sand tanuki that Sano and Mame were making caused the former to summon his lighting magic to electrocute everyone. Never bother Mame or Sano will throw hands.
I did like the transition from the beach segment to the homework segment. The second half takes place in the last day of summer vacation, August 31. Sano is struggling with his youkai studies homework as he needs to write a report about youkai birth. So, he and Haruaki decide to go to the homes of the Class 2-3 students to learn about how they are conceptualized. In Yanagida’s case, he’s born from spirit magic that his parents put in an object; the fact that all the Yanagida family are voiced by Tomokazu Sugita is hilarious. Animal youkai like Mame normally produce a lot of offsprings, so it’s normal for them to have a big family with many siblings. I think Odawara’s story of how he became the first chouchin-kouzou and how he creates them was so interesting; he basically asexually reproduce them!
Starting with Odawara, the topic of how youkais came to be become a topic of interest as there are many theories. Odawara says that he was born from a soul of a sinner. Takahashi says that youkais are born from the souls of sinners. Yamazaki says that gods curse humans into youkai as punishment. This gets Sano down as it’s revealed that he’s not a youkai but a god. Despite the serious confession, Haruaki already knew since the beginning as there was a note in his roll call file; he never brought it up because he felt as if it was a sensitive topic for Sano. I do like that Haruaki is considerate of his feelings and never reveals people’s secrets. I think the whole lore of how youkais come to be is so interesting because as a viewer, you’ve adjusted to them for a while that how they come to be feels like a question in the back of your mind.
Though, there is a topic of interspecies relationships when Haruaki and Sano go to Hijita’s place. While Hijita’s sister did marry a human man, their future child would be half youkai. Interspecies couples like the Hatanakas could either have youkai genes from either parent, or they could be a new hybrid altogether. However, if a human and a youkai were to marry and conceive, it’s more straining for the mother if she’s human. Given how this topic cuts to Nyuudou when brought up, it’s foreshadowing something; I know what it is, but I’m not spoiling for anime-only people.
The ending was hilarious. First we had Yanagida finding the serious atmosphere awkward as he just learned about secrets he feels as if he shouldn’t hear them, so he grabs the fireworks and blows it up. Then, we have Hatanaka destroying Hijita because he didn’t do his homework. RIP, Hijita. You’ll be seen next episode.
Now that summer vacation has come to an end, there are seven episodes left. What will be shown for the last remaining episodes? If you’re a manga reader, do you have any predictions? Let me know your thoughts as well!

A Terrified Teacher At Ghoul School Episode 12 Review - The Lost Teacher
Just a head’s up, this is the last episode of the first half of the show. The show has two cours back-to-back, so the rest of the season will be aired in Winter 2025. There won’t be an episode next Tuesday, December 31 due to it being New Year’s Eve. The second half will resume January 7 with a new opening and ending!
Anyways, it can’t be a Yohaji episode without Haruaki getting into some kind of trouble wherever he goes. This time, he gets lost while Class 2-3 is on a field trip to Tokyo. This guy’s sense of direction needs to be studied alongside his voice actor’s lungs. Anyways, this episode is mainly Haruaki and Class 2-3 trying to find and reunite with each other as the kids split up in all directions while Haruaki himself gets help from an unlikely stranger.
This episode introduces Ebisu, but he never introduces his name to Haruaki. However, you can tell that this man is Sano’s brother as he appeared in the flashback in the previous episode. Nine years later, he still has disdain for youkai. He seems intrigued by Haruaki as he knows he’s a human teacher at Hyakki Academy and he also knows that Sano is attached to him (not that Sano will ever admit that). I wonder how he knows all about this; he’s probably stalking his brother or something… Also, Ebisu is not a youkai, which means that Sano isn’t one either—Sano not being a youkai was established back in the first episode where the Yakubyougami wasn’t in Haruaki’s encyclopedia and that he wasn’t affected by Yanagida’s perfume that he sprayed on Momoyama back in episode 8.
Anyways, it’s interesting to see the differences Ebisu and Haruaki have when it comes to youkai. Ebisu hates them but keeps it a secret, while Haruaki is afraid of them, but keeps persevering because he’s kind and wants to do his best as a teacher to guide his students, youkai or not. That’s why Haruaki went to save the little Zashiki-warashi trapped in the fire despite the fact that he doesn’t have to. He wants to do it because it’s both the right thing to do and that he cares a lot about youkai. The little girl could be a future student of his in the future, which means that Haruaki still imagines himself teaching at Hyakki Academy years from now, which is honestly massive character development for him. The way Haruaki is a misfortunate magnet, yet is managed to be saved by an amulet given to him by the God of Misfortune feels like some sort of Uno Reverse card of sorts.
It’s sweet that Class 2-3 didn’t rejoice over losing their teacher and doing whatever they want and took the time to look for him, even if meant costing them their trip. I know for a fact that not having a teacher around is a student’s biggest joy and that realistically, students would be happy to do whatever they want without teacher supervision, so it’s nice that these kids aren’t about that. They split into different groups and search different areas to look for their teacher. Youkai students function a bit differently when in human territory; they have their own set of rules implemented too like humanoid youkai need to hide their non-human features like how Nyuudou needs to wear a mask despite looking mostly human while the non-human looking youkai have to be disguised as objects or mascots like how Yanagida is disguised as a pennant and Daisy and Marilyn are mascots following Utagawa around. Though, the kids do get to explore Tokyo while searching for their teacher. Though, Hijita spends his day searching the sewers, which keeps the running gag of him getting the short end of the stick in situations at times.
Though, there is a little detail that there are youkai living in Tokyo as Akira and Yamazaki disguised as him are going to a cafe they visit every six months that have actual youkai in them. And the rules of youkai are a little odd when some are doing their magic out in the open without being concealed like how Yamazaki is showing off his wrappings while there are people around. I also find that there is an air patrol youkai to be hilarious.
My only gripe is that this episode actually removes a little detail that was in the manga regarding Fuji and another character, but it makes sense because that other character hasn’t been fully introduced into the story yet. In fact, they skipped that chapter, but given what I’m seeing in the second cour’s trailer, maybe he’ll finally get that spotlight.
If I had a nickel for every media that has Ryota Osaka and Ryohei Kimura in it together, I’d be a millionaire by now because it’s happened so often, whether they be characters that have interacted with each other or not. Like I mentioned in my review of the previous episode, Kimura and Osaka have been in several media together where they voice characters that have a lot of chemistry like Haikyuu with Bokuto and Akaashi, Tales of Zestiria as Sorey and Mikleo and now Yohaji with Ebisu and Haruaki. This makes a voice actor fan like me happy. Keep at it—keep casting these two together!
Also, the trailer for the second cour is on Youtube if you want to watch it! I’ve never heard of Sou before, but there are a lot of people excited for him singing the second opening. I honestly can’t wait to see what the second half of the show will bring in terms of what they’ll animate and how it’s presented. Let me know your thoughts on this episode!

Haruaki: You guys are reading hamlet, right? What’s one of the recurring themes in Hamlet?
Kuniko: Oh, Oooh, Ooooooh, call on me! Betrayal
Haruaki: Very good, very good. Ok, now who can give me a good example of betrayal?
Rensuke: Oh! Um, when Hamlet sends Rosencrantz and Guildstern on a boat to die.
Haruaki: Exactly- Hamlet betrays his friends.
Hijita: Which is super fucked up because only a fucking dickhole betrays his friends
Beniko: Well, maybe he wouldn’t if his friends weren’t a bunch of selfish bitches who had already betrayed his girlfriend in the first place.
Haruaki: That’s mostly right! Rosencrantz and Guildstern were going to betray hamlet first.
Fuji: Well maybe if Hamlet’s girlfriend had known her place instead of being a whiny little bitch, everything wouldn’t be so fucked up!
Beniko: Well maybe if Rosencrantz and Guildstern didn’t tried to set up two dickholes to make love with the girl that he was in love with like two skanky little cock wranglers, they wouldn’t have got put on that fucking boat!
Fuji: That doesn’t mean that Hamlet should go attempt to blow up an entire fucking school and almost ruin fucking everything!
Mame: And maybe if people would have chilled the fuck out, Ophelia wouldn’t felt like she had to jump off of a goddamn bridge!
Haruaki: Ok, I think we moved a bit off topic, but I loved the energy, guys! Love the energy.
Rensuke: What page does the school bombing attempt happen on?
Kuniko: Don'tworry, Ren-kun. Apparently, today is not going to be a learning day.
