A Terrified Teacher At Ghoul School Episode 17 Review - The Last Days Of Summer

The summer vacation arc is coming to a close as the students spend their final days going to the beach and doing their remaining homework. It’s a fun episode overall as the boys get into shenanigans as well as having Sano and Haruaki learn a lot about youkai lore.

The beach portion of the episode was just fan service and comedy in one. Remember how we had reverse fan service in Episode 8 where the girls were peeping at the boys? Well, we finally get the usual anime fan service with the boys being the stars. They go to the beach to try and hit on girls using Sano as bait, but things go awry when Mame acts like a rabid Tanuki around some girls approaching him. Not only do the boys get fan service, but the girls of Class 2-3 also show up in cute swimsuits! I have to say, Renjou was serving cunt in that swimsuit and hat combination. The chapter that this half of the episode was based on is actually an earlier chapter that took place at the same time as Haruaki going to Rintaro’s family’s home.

The craziness of the beach portion comes in the form of two sea youkai trying to hit on some of the girls, so the boys step up to try and save them from the pests. Although Satelight’s art for this show isn’t the prettiest, I do admit that the watery effect for the two water youkais were really nice. The Funayurei is voiced by Jin Ogasawara who is a rookie. The Umibouzu is voiced by Fumiya Imai; if you’re familiar with Project Sekai and/or Given, he’s Akito Shinonome and Hiiragi from those respective media. Since Taito Ban voiced Shizusumi from Given, it’s basically Shizu throwing mud at Hiiragi in a way. Though, the Funayurei was quite a threat with his abilities. The Umibouzu didn’t show his ability as Fuji froze the water and getting him and some of the boys stuck. Unfortunately, the Funayurei messed with the wrong guy as destroying the sand tanuki that Sano and Mame were making caused the former to summon his lighting magic to electrocute everyone. Never bother Mame or Sano will throw hands.

I did like the transition from the beach segment to the homework segment. The second half takes place in the last day of summer vacation, August 31. Sano is struggling with his youkai studies homework as he needs to write a report about youkai birth. So, he and Haruaki decide to go to the homes of the Class 2-3 students to learn about how they are conceptualized. In Yanagida’s case, he’s born from spirit magic that his parents put in an object; the fact that all the Yanagida family are voiced by Tomokazu Sugita is hilarious. Animal youkai like Mame normally produce a lot of offsprings, so it’s normal for them to have a big family with many siblings. I think Odawara’s story of how he became the first chouchin-kouzou and how he creates them was so interesting; he basically asexually reproduce them! 

Starting with Odawara, the topic of how youkais came to be become a topic of interest as there are many theories. Odawara says that he was born from a soul of a sinner. Takahashi says that youkais are born from the souls of sinners. Yamazaki says that gods curse humans into youkai as punishment. This gets Sano down as it’s revealed that he’s not a youkai but a god. Despite the serious confession, Haruaki already knew since the beginning as there was a note in his roll call file; he never brought it up because he felt as if it was a sensitive topic for Sano. I do like that Haruaki is considerate of his feelings and never reveals people’s secrets. I think the whole lore of how youkais come to be is so interesting because as a viewer, you’ve adjusted to them for a while that how they come to be feels like a question in the back of your mind.

Though, there is a topic of interspecies relationships when Haruaki and Sano go to Hijita’s place. While Hijita’s sister did marry a human man, their future child would be half youkai. Interspecies couples like the Hatanakas could either have youkai genes from either parent, or they could be a new hybrid altogether. However, if a human and a youkai were to marry and conceive, it’s more straining for the mother if she’s human. Given how this topic cuts to Nyuudou when brought up, it’s foreshadowing something; I know what it is, but I’m not spoiling for anime-only people.

The ending was hilarious. First we had Yanagida finding the serious atmosphere awkward as he just learned about secrets he feels as if he shouldn’t hear them, so he grabs the fireworks and blows it up. Then, we have Hatanaka destroying Hijita because he didn’t do his homework. RIP, Hijita. You’ll be seen next episode.

Appare-Ranman, nuova locandina e nuovo trailer per la serie animata

La folle corsa targata P.A. Works avrà inizio sulle tv giapponesi da aprile!

Pubblicati una nuova immagine promozionale e un secondo teaser trailer di “Appare-Ranman!”, il nuovo anime originale prodotto presso lo studio P.A. Works (Shirobako, Uma Musume: Pretty Derby, Maquia: When the Promised Flower Blooms,) che farà il suo debutto sulle tv giapponesi nel corso del mese di aprile.

Per l’occasione sono stati rivelati gli interpreti delle sigle della serie: il brano di apertura si intitolerà "I got it!" e sarà ad opera del trio Mia REGINA (Code:Realize, Citrus, HenSuki), mentre la sigla di coda sarà cantata dal doppiatore Showtaro Morikubo (Starmyu, Uta  no Prince-sama, The Prince of Tennis II).

Inoltre, al cast già confermato si vanno ad aggiungere:

Il brillante, ma poco socievole ingegnere Appare Sorano Appare e l’astuto, ma ben poco temerario samurai Kosame Isshiki, si ritrovano fortuitamente su una nave diretta in America. Una volta sbarcati e senza il becco di un quattrino, i due decidono di partecipare alla Trans-America Wild Race, una gara che percorre tutto il continente da Los Angeles fino a New York e che premia i vincitori con un grosso premio in denaro! Pur di ritornare a casa in Giappone, i due dovranno affrontare una schiera di concorrenti uno più folle dell’altro, a borda della loro auto a vapore!

Come direttore artistico troviamo Miho Sugiura, mentre la fotografia e il compositing sono curati da Satoshi Namiki. Naomi Nakano partecipa la progetto come colorista, mentre Motonari Ichikawa dirige la sezione 3D. Il montaggio è di Ayumu Takahashi, Satoki Iida è il direttore del suono e la colonna sonora è firmata da Evan Call (Violet Evergarden, Symphogear GX) per Lantis.

A Terrified Teacher At Ghoul School Episode 14 Review - Cursed Guesthouse

Summer vacation continues, but Haruaki gets to see his students again as they all gather to help Beniko and her family’s guesthouse. It was nice to see Class 2-3 interacting outside of school! Even if we don’t see everyone interact with each other on-screen, it’s nice to see the strong bond they all have with one another.

It’s actually nice to see Beniko have some spotlight for once! While she is a prominent character, she doesn’t really get much spotlight, but this is her time to shine! Her family background is also revealed in that she has three human fathers and that she was born from the guesthouse after the three renovated it seventeen years ago. She’s usually indifferent towards others, but she loves her three fathers a lot and want to do what she can to help them as they raised her for seventeen years; Matsuo, the one with black hair, even broke up with his long-time girlfriend because of her. She wants to show that her fathers gained a lot when she came into their life and not be plagued by their downs. Because she looks like a human, she is able to pass off as one and not have people suspect her to be a youkai.

Despite that, the guesthouse her family runs is popular because of rumors about youkai living there. This is the premise of the episode: to prove to a occult journalist and a skeptic scholar that they exist. I like how creative each method was. First, Fuji was acting as a proprietress with Akibe being in the little box before running out; it’s shocking how his voice actor Saku Hyuga could produce such a feminine voice. Next was Haruaki, Kurahashi and Momoyama posing as corpses trapped in Renjou’s webs as the Ogata twins produce weather befitting the spooky vibes; I found this so funny because these three make the funniest faces, so Beniko used that to her advantage. Because the skeptic wasn’t scared, the scare tactics go up a level. The most hilarious part of the episode is Haruaki running like a spider to help scare and he gets his picture in the magazine article despite not being a youkai. Oh, Haruaki, continue being silly as heck.

This is the first episode where Ogoso actually has screen time and a speaking role. The chapter where he was prominently introduced was supposed to be before the summer vacation arc, but I’m assuming he’ll be showcased after the arc as Fuji doesn’t seem to be aware of his abilities despite being close friends canonically. Haruaki doesn’t even know why he’s dressed the way he is despite knowing in the manga; it makes it feel as if Yanagida just took him while he was busy. He’s voiced by Noriaki Kanze who also voiced the Human-faced Fish and Tenmaru.

Beniko’s three fathers all have different personalities, so it’s nice to see that they’re not one-note. They’re all named after plants with the Matsu in Matsuo meaning pine, the take in Kotake meaning bamboo and the Ume in Oume meaning plum. Matsuo is very laidback in that even when he broke up with his long-time girlfriend, he wasn’t too bothered by it as Beniko was more important. I think Beniko’s way of talking was influenced by Kotake in that they’re both blunt and abrasive when talking. Oume is practically ‘straight man’ of the three. I think it’s really sweet that Beniko loves all three of them so much and wants to do something nice for them. Also, surprisingly, they’re not voiced by well-known voice actors. I guess of the three, Kotake has the most ‘well known’ voice actor as he’s the VA of Land from Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End and Cappy from Super Mario Odyssey. Other than him, the other two are voiced by rookies.

I just noticed that Sano and Mame actually did nothing in this episode—wow. I wonder how long the summer vacation arc will be. Will it be until the first half of the second cour? Let me know your thoughts of this episode!
