At the end of the movie Shawshank Redemption Andy was sanding on a piece of junk boat up on the beach. He has gotten away with a lot of money. Why didn't he just buy a good boat that he could use with some of that money?
Andy actually explains it in the film.
In the scene where he tells Red about Zihuatanejo, he shares his dream for a new life where he can “open up a little hotel right on the beach, buy a worthless old boat and fix it up like new, and take my guests out charter fishing on it.”
(The explanation is in this scene.)
It’s a rather simple dream but it speaks exactly to Andy’s character.
Sure, he could just buy a new boat. The $370,000 he stole from Warden Norton is about $3.48 million adjusted for inflation. So he has more than enough money if he wanted to go that way.
But buying a new boat is not his style.
Andy prefers to earn his dreams.
He’s a patient man who respects the value of putting work into his life. And ultimately he believes in renewal and rebirth over everything.
He also needs a mission he can invest his energy into.
Whether that’s carving a chess set from scratch, or building the best prison library in New England, or helping other men graduate high school, or carving a tunnel through his prison cell wall, he needs to be working towards a goal he can be proud of. And restoring a “worthless old boat” by hand is just such a project.
That way, when he takes his guests out fishing, he can take pride in the work being all his own.
(Andy always prefers to invest his time and effort into his projects. In the film he’s a rich and intelligent man, regardless of the fact that he’s a convict. He has money and connections and could easily try to buy and bribe his way out of most difficulties - yet he insists on all his victories being DIY, rather than taking the easy path of using wealth and power. In fact, as a prison inmate he once spent what would be nearly $200 today on a rock hammer without even blinking so he could make a chess set. For the same $200 he could have easily just bought a high-end chess set through Red instead.)
Andy needs to know that it’s his toil and effort that have made the important moments in his life possible, and that the moment of happiness he creates are something he has earned.

“We can keep ourselves so busy, fill our lives with so many diversions, stuff our heads with so much knowledge, involve ourselves with so many people and cover so much ground that we never have time to probe the fearful and wonderful world within… By middle life most of us are accomplished fugitives from ourselves.”

Justice For MCU Hulk: Everything cut from The Incredible Hulk (2009) that saves its characters
After She-Hulk renewed criticism of Bruce Banner’s characterisation in the MCU, I looked back at The Incredible Hulk. It’s the shortest MCU movie (1hr 52 mins) so this extra 25 minutes of footage would bring it to about the same length as The Winter Soldier, vastly improving Bruce’s characterisation, his romance with Betty, and General Ross as the villain.
Alternate Opening in the Arctic (2:16)
The most famous cut, Bruce’s attempted s*icide referenced in The Avengers. Strong, shocking character beat to open the film
Hulk’s origin
The film’s 3-minute title-sequence condenses “40 minutes” of Hulk’s origin & its aftermath. This was mostly unscripted (Norton contributed a lot) with “points of entry” for flashbacks throughout the film that unravelled the mystery of what happened..
In an interview, director Louis Leterrie explained:
“[the Arctic was] a few months after the incident … afterwards we were flash forwarding to Brazil … a few years later ... then afterward you were getting flashbacks—that’s the way the script was structured—to tell you the story … everything you saw in the credit sequence. People hated it … what the hell is this? Is this a sequel? Is this a re-boot? We don’t understand anything.”
Building the Lab (1:07)
Most of the cut Brazil footage is filler, but I like Bruce dumpster-diving to make DIY lab equipment
General Greller (2:28)
Ross’ motivation. He’s the true villain!
I’d cut the 1st exchange between Ross & Greller, moving straight from the plane to Blonsky entering the office.
Nice character-building (‘is there any medal you haven’t won?’)
Greller criticizing Ross’ supersoldier program ties into the wider MCU (Hulk as a supersoldier attempt was only later established in The Avengers) & makes Ross more culpable
Bruce Delivers Pizzas (0:36)
The girls’ dorm should stay cut, but Bruce helping students with an experiment at his old university is a lovely character beat
Betty and Leonard (0:30)
Doc Sampson!
So the love triangle doesn’t seem quite as lopsided
Bruce and Betty Talk (3:18)
Sets a clear timeline for Bruce
Sets up an ‘ethics cloud’ around Sterns/The Leader, and suggests he turned Bruce over to Ross in Brazil
Betty is proactive. Her arc becoming disillusioned with Ross starts here. Her keeping their data in an ornate jewelry box builds the Bruce/Betty romance
“Hope comes back so quickly” is a strong character beat
Dinner with Bruce (1:30)
“It’s been a long time since I’ve felt a light” is a nice character beat: Betty’s house is the eye of the storm in Bruce’s journey
Leonard characterisation!
The Orchid (1:27)
Betty is proactive again!
The Orchid as a metaphor for their love
Bruce and Leonard (4:17)
Leonard: I’ll confess something to you if you clear up some things for me. First, I confess as a man, Betty’s lover, that I’ve always hoped you were dead. Not because I don’t like you but because I love Betty. And I’ve known that unless you were really gone, or she believed that you were… there’d always be three of us in this relationship. I dreaded the thought of you walking through the door. But… now that you’re here, I have to admit I’m very happy about it. Because I’m also a psychiatrist. And I’m very committed to putting light into dark corners, so to speak. Betty has a very dark corner that I’ve never found my way into, despite considerable careful effort. And the only thing that I know about her dark place is that you’re in it. So… Why are you something that she won’t talk about?
Bruce: There are aspects of my personality that I can’t control. And when I lose control it’s very dangerous to be around me. I hurt Betty in a way that I will never forgive myself for.
Leonard: You don’t drop your career and fall off the face of the Earth for 5 years because you have an anger management issue, Bruce. You see a shrink.
Bruce: It’s a little bit more complicated than that.
Leonard: Trust me when I tell you I’ve heard them all.
Bruce: Not like this.
Leonard: Completely honest and yet avoiding the heart of the matter. Exactly like her.
Leonard’s big moment! He’s an actual character! Learning Bruce hurt Betty motivates him turning Bruce in
Chatting to a psychiatrist about the Hulk like a real-world personality disorder is gold
Lots of work on the romance, the ‘Dark Corner’ in Betty’s mind that Bruce inhabits.
Justification for Leonard ratting Bruce out. It's implied Leonard deliberately drains the car battery to discourage Betty going with Bruce
Motel Room Conversation (1:14)
Bruce: I’m sorry.
Betty: It’s okay. It’s so mysterious, this thing inside of you. All the other scars have healed.
Bruce: Not mine. His scars heal but mine don’t
Betty: Yes they do. They leave a mark, but they stop hurting [exposes a scar under her fringe, from the Hulk accident. Bruce turns away.] Look at me. That pain didn’t last. Not knowing was so much worse. I looked for your face everywhere. I never stopped.
Proactive Betty again. Real meat for the romance, addressing their shared trauma & Bruce’s guilt
Nature’s Mystery (3:02)
Ross: Major, a great writer once said, "There are clefts in the rock, where we see the back part of God, and tremble." There's no training for what you saw out there because it's not an enemy that confronts us, it's a new power. Let loose through a crack in the cliff of Nature's mystery. How many times do you think that's happened in all of human history? Fire. The splitting of the atom. The universe unveils a secret and people recoil, cowering in fear and awe. And then comes the person who stops trembling. Who steps forward to face the flame, and seizes the burning stick and says "This will I master and use."
William Hurt gets to act. This monologue is the best dialogue in the film. Ross’ motivation is so well-expressed here
On the Hulk Hunt (1:07)
Builds Blomsky’s frustrations with Ross and motivation to become Abomination
Ross and Sparr (1:40)
Betty: I will never forgive what you've done to him.
Ross: He's a fugitive. He made choices.
Betty: You made him a fugitive. To cover your failures, and protect your career. I know what you said to him after the accident. Before I woke up, what you proposed? That's why he ran away and gave up.
Ross: His work, his blood is the property of the United States Army, and my duty precedes my personal feelings in this matter.
Betty: Freedom, democracy, our way of life.
Ross: Something like that.
Betty: You believe in so much. But we have to start with truth or the rest of it doesn't work. Don't ever speak to me as your daughter again.
“If you took it from me I’m gonna put you in a hole for the rest of your life”. Ross is the villain!
Cut the Major, but Betty confronting Ross re: weaponizing the Hulk is a strong cap for her arc
Bruce Confesses in the Helicopter
In the novelisation:
“on the helicopter, prior to jumping … Banner admits to Betty that because he thought he killed her when he first became the Hulk, he tried to kill himself. The Hulk wouldn’t let him, which is why he thinks the Hulk will save him from the fall.”
Leonard Calls Betty (1:40)
Follow-up on Leonard and Betty. Nice moment for her
Tldr; This extended version still wouldn’t be *great*, but it’s a significant improvement from mediocre to good, especially in hindsight with how Hulk has been treated since AoU.

Soooo, a few days ago, you had said that a Michael/David face-sitting fic exists. I happen to be very interested in reading that sort of thing, so I was hoping for a link! Thanks!
Hi there! Oh, my. Well, I think I might have inadvertently given the wrong impression about what I was referring to, as the "fic" was technically an Anon that someone sent me that read like a little Michael/David ficlet. I added onto it with my own thoughts, though I would still classify it more as "freestyle smut" than a fully-fledged fic, but if you'd like to read it, you can check it out here.
I can give you a rec for an actual fic, though! It's from a few years ago and takes place in the dressing room during the taping of the Graham Norton Show (at the end of 2020, when Michael and David were reunited for the first time in many, many months). In this fic, David actually straddles Michael's face instead of sitting on it, but it is still quite hot and well worth reading.
Mmh. I know we've all been hoping for some sort of response from Michael and David to the news of the GO 3 renewal, but now I'm wondering if they've been celebrating privately on their own, especially since we know Michael is in London. I could certainly imagine some celebratory face-sitting going on, and while I'm sure Michael would be tempted to accomplish the acrobatic feat of tweeting while not actually being able to see his phone, I think we can give him (and David) a pass for this one. Good times...
(Including a gif of Michael Sheen tongue purely for scientific purposes...)

Innnnnteresting......
My friend @TearsOf10th_ on Twitter found this interesting tidbit about a reboot of the 80s television show, Bergerac:
This is interesting indeed, since rumor on Twitter says DT was spotted in Paris over the last couple days. According to another article, "At the end of 2020, French TV production firm Banijay sealed its $2.2 billion acquisition of Endemol Shine from Disney and Apollo Global Management, which meant that the previous Bergerac project team was split up. Westward Studios, Banijay – and its company BlackLight – eventually decided to buy back the script from the owners of Paramount and start again, with the rights to develop the series being renewed last year." So the production company is French, Jersey is in the heavily Franco-British cultural landscape, and more than likely the production company's HQ is in Paris. Also, "Executive producers Phil Trethowan, Ben Bickerton and writer Toby Whithouse were recently able to visit Jersey for a familiarisation and scouting exercise that resulted in numerous changes being made to the initial draft script." Whithouse, as you all know, wrote Being Human (in which Turner starred.) And he's also done Doctor Who as well. This looks VERY promising indeed! Now let's all manifest David speaking French..... --- Here's the first ep of the original Bergerac (keep in mind this was made in the 1980s, so do be aware of how television has changed from then until now before watching it......you've been warned!)

Back in 1998, when Matt Damon was still on his ascent to Hollywood's A-list, he made a movie about poker that was initially viewed as a box office disappointment. But time has been kind to Rounders which has benefited from a burgeoning interest in high-stakes poker over the years and become a cult hit. (Interestingly, the movie was written by David Levien and Brian Koppelman, who took their interest in high-stakes finance to a whole new level by co-creating the series Billions, which has only helped establish the film's pedigree further.) Damon has recently expressed a renewed interest in revisiting the film with a sequel, stating on The Rich Eisen Show that he's talked to many of the people involved with Rounders, and they'd be "all in" on making another, so to speak.
Whether that sequel happens or not remains to be seen, but in the meantime, Damon might just head back to the casinos to keep his chops up. After all, when he made the original film, he told us that he and co-star Edward Norton prepared for their roles by hitting Vegas and playing in the infamous World Series of Poker. Rounders is currently streaming on Pluto TV and available on DVD, Blu-Ray, and most digital platforms.

On July 30th 2003 Multi race winning Motorcyclist, Robert Steven ‘Hizzy’ Hislop died.
Hislop was from a close knit, Scottish Borders family. He grew up in the village of Chesters near the town of Hawick with his father Sandy, mother Margaret and younger brother Garry [his best friend]. Sandy encouraged his boys to be enthusiastic about competitive motorcycling and take up racing.
However his father died when Steve was 17, then Garry was killed in a racing accident at Silloth circuit in 1982 aged 19, Steve’s enthusiasm waned and he slumped into an alcohol fuelled depression.
However, a trip to the TT races in 1983 inspired him, and he decided to compete there, with his first win in the 1987 TT Formula 2 Race on a Yamaha.
He went on to become the fourth most successful TT rider of all time with a total of 11 wins, including four victories in the senior race - the TT’s premier event. In total, he took the podium an incredible 19 times. But for many domestic fans, the victory held most dear is his win on the rotary-engined Norton in 1992 - the last time an all-British machine won a TT.
Unlike a lot of TT specialists, Hislop was also extremely good on conventional racing circuits and was tipped by many for world championship success. When he won the British 250cc Supercup for Honda in 1990, everything looked set for a glittering career in grand prix, following his countryman Niall Mackenzie.
But promise was never turned into reality, and he never marketed himself in a way which would secure a GP ride. Later, he expressed regret that he had not contracted a personal manager, who could have directed his talents on the bike into a career off it.
He was twice British superbike champion and also won in world superbike and world endurance racing. Hislop excelled at endurance racing and was world champion in 1993 - but again didn’t capitalise on this success.
Much of the problem lay with his dual personality. With race fans he was often the most charming, accessible and easy-going of all his generation of riders. However, he was often difficult for teams - despite his astonishing skill on the track.
Even after winning the 2002 British superbike championship, Monster Mob Ducati team owner Paul Bird did not renew his contract, and Hislop was fired from the Virgin Mobile Yamaha team in July of this year - and mid-season sackings of a team’s lead rider are rare occurrences.
Injuries did not help his career either. In a miraculous escape, he broke his neck at the 2000 world superbike round at Brands Hatch and then, unaware of the seriousness of his injuries, discharged himself from hospital. In 2002, he suffered horrendous injuries when a safety fence lifted and he hit a solid barrier behind it. Despite this enormous setback, he went on to win the 2002 British superbike championship.
Conscious of the fact that his racing career was coming to a close, Hislop had been taking helicopter flying lessons with the aim of becoming a commercial helicopter pilot.
On July 30th 2003 Hislop crashed his hewlicopter just eight minutes after leaving a friend’s home in Hawick to fly solo back to Buckinghamshire.
Steve has two statues in his memory, one on The Isle of Man, the other at Wilton Lodge Park in Hawick. He has two, £2 coins that were struck by the royal mint in 2019 to mhonour him.
There is a cairn near Teviothead close tothe scene of the helicopter crash, it reads……
The last pic is a cairn near Teviothead, the scene of the helicopter crash, it reads……
'Hizzy’ This cairn was built by a few friends of Steve Hislop, British Superbike Champion, who was tragically killed in a helicopter accident near this site, on July 30th 2003.
Kind permission was granted by His Grace The Duke of Buccleuch.

I'll just wait for 4 Minutes to (hopefully) become available in Gagaoolala, iQiyi, or YouTube because I'm too broke to re-install and renew my Viu membership. Not to mention needing a VPN that can connect to Thailand because Viu ain't available in Australia (btw, Norton VPN sucks. But it comes with the 360, so yeah).

Podcast #981: The Power of Everyday Rituals to Shape and Enhance Our Lives
When we think of rituals, we tend to think of big, inherited, more occasional religious or cultural ceremonies like church services, holidays, weddings, and funerals. But as my guest observes, we also engage in small, self-made, everyday rituals that help us turn life’s more mundane moments into more meaningful ones. In the The Ritual Effect: From Habit to Ritual, Harness the Surprising Power of Everyday Actions, psychologist and Harvard Business School professor Michael Norton explores the way our DIY rituals shape, and enhance, our lives. We take up that survey on today’s show. Michael explains the difference between a habit and a ritual and how individuals and families create unique “ritual signatures” even within more standard rituals like holidays. We discuss the different areas of life in which rituals show up and what they do for us, including how they help us cope with uncertainty, savor life, and connect to the past. We get into the function DIY rituals perform in romantic relationships, from deepening intimacy to facilitating a break-up, the role that “kinkeepers” play in keeping a family together, the tricky business of combining family traditions when people get married, how to know when a family tradition should be retired, and much more. What we know about Jackdaw so far
(EDIT Jan 21, 2023: This piece has been updated to include a little bit of new information as Jenna Coleman made her first media confirmation of the new movie in her recent Telegraph interview)
So, as Jenna Coleman begins what will hopefully be a successful run in the play Lemons Lemons Lemons Lemons Lemons (stream please, National Theatre Live) my thoughts turn to a rather mysterious project she was involved in just before Christmas - somehow as she was in the midst of rehearsals for the play. Jackdaw - as the project has been referred, though this may not be the final title - has had only scant regional media coverage and I admit that if not for that scant coverage I would be starting to wonder if this project was real or some sort of nethoax like a certain alleged lost film Tumblr was on about for a while in the fall.
Since there have been numerous posts on the topic here in recent weeks (mostly by @oswincoleman who has done an amazing job keeping track), I thought I’d try and distil what major information is known (or not known) about this film so far. Spoiler break for length.
1. As I said, it is not known if Jackdaw is the official name, or a working title, or some sort of cover title like “Blue Harvest” disguised the filming of Return of the Jedi; but that would have to mean “Jackdaw” is connected to some major enterprise, which it doesn’t appear to be. Although I saw someone ask if maybe this was connected to Sandman coming a few months after its renewal by Netflix (and Netflix allegedly being connected to Jackdaw, not to mention a comics-accurate hair-colour change by Jenna), there’s no sign of any connection to Sandman or any other franchise (Mason Alexander Park of Sandman said the other day they don’t expect to resume filming till the summer); and despite the director having worked on Doctor Who before, there’s been nothing to suggest it’s related in anyway to that either (and they’d be talking Disney+ or BBC not Netflix if it was).
2. As of mid-January, all we have heard about it is from social media posts and a few “what are they filming?”-style stories on local/regional news sites, plus a casting call for extras that was posted in December. Recent major media coverage of Jenna - including about her hair colour change - have made no reference to the project.
3. Jenna herself has only made reference to this production by way of a couple of enigmatic Instagram Stories posts, one showing a motorcycle, another showing camera equipment. According to social media, she filmed her role over the course of about a week or so in mid-December. Despite this, people purporting to be insiders on the production have claimed she has a major role in it. Speculation is she might go back to film more after the play wraps. But social media reports filming on Jackdaw wrapped in mid-January. Filming apparently took place in the north of England, including Hartlepool.
3.5. Interestingly, Jenna has made no reference to the film in recent interviews, including the one with Graham Norton who surely must have been aware of the social media reports if nothing else; even when she was under her NDA for Sandman back in 2021 she was at least still able to acknowledge she was filming “something” recently even if she couldn’t say what. Jackdaw does not seem to something on the scale of a Marvel movie, so I can’t see her not being allowed to at least acknowledge the film - unless maybe the producers of the Lemons play asked her not to, perhaps so as not to take away from the play. To be fair, if you’re promoting a specific event it wouldn’t do to spend the limited time available talking about Jackdaw, Wilderness, Sandman S2, Klokkenluider, War Rooms... right?
5. Who is involved in Jackdaw? Other than Jenna, it appears the lead actor is one Thomas Turgoose, known for the This is England films and TV series in the UK (an unknown to me; he was in one of the Kingsmen films too; I see Jenna also began following him on Instagram at some point). A casting call for a scene suggested Oliver Jackson-Cohen, Jenna’s co-star in the upcoming Wilderness, is also in it but I haven’t seen much more on that. And Jenna reportedly has a stunt double. Personnel from The Sandman are also involved such as the cinematographer as well as the director is reportedly Jamie Childs, Jenna’s current boyfriend who directed her main episode of SM. If reports are accurate it makes this an interesting hybrid of her most recent TV projects.
6. Around the time of filming, as we know, Jenna dyed her hair a bright blonde, a look she debuted at an event she found time to attend just before the holidays. It is not yet known if she did it for the film, for the play (as she’s kept it and yellowish hair for a play called Lemons, etc., makes sense), or both. Or maybe she just decided to go blonde. The fact she’s still dark-haired on the posters for the play suggests it was a decision made after the initial publicity photo shoots for the play were done.
6.5 Surprisingly, Jenna didn’t make an Instagram post about changing her hair colour. Indeed, except for a couple of play-related posts and one set of pics taken while preparing for a pre-blonde event, she was all but radio silent on Instagram during December (she didn’t do a year in review for Instagram Stories either, nor did she post anything related to the event she attended where she unveiled the new hairdo). Which does make sense if she was shooting a movie, commuting, preparing for the play, etc.
7. There’s apparently a rave sequence in the film with police (including apparently riot cops, at least based on the casting call), for which some photos from the set have emerged. Jenna, as noted, apparently has a stunt double possibly related to motorcycle riding?
8. Social media have said this is a film being made for Netflix, but Netflix has yet to make any announcement regarding such a production. Obviously, no hints of a release date have come out (and remembering the long wait for a release on Klokkenluider, scenes for which Jenna filmed 2 years ago, it may be a while). According to the social media reports, this is a feature-length film, not a short, intended for cinemas.
I’m sure I missed a few (and likely made some mistakes too) but these are the major bullet points as I understand them. Despite claims of Jenna having a major role in the show, I’m a little skeptical given how little time she appears to have spent filming (and the fact she squeezed this in while in the midst of rehearsals for the play). The fact we have a pretty clear indication of when she went blonde (between her event in early December with dark hair, followed a couple weeks later by her attending an event with blonde hair), I don’t think it’s a case of her having done more filming earlier that we don’t know about (unless she changes hair colour during the film ).
My gut is telling me it’ll be the same as Klokkenluider, for which Jenna indeed plays a major role but according to reviews does not actually appear throughout the film. In Jackdaw, Jenna could be playing a major role - but one that only involves her in a few scenes. Time will tell. And until or unless someone - production company, one of the actors, Netflix - actually releases some sort of info, we’re stuck for now with speculation, guesswork and Instagram posts.
Update: January 21, 2023: Jenna Coleman was the subject of a major interview with the Daily Telegraph magazine. The article is behind a paywall, but it does confirm that Jenna did film a movie called Jackdaw, dyed her hair for the film, and apparently plays a “pixie punk biker” in the movie. The plot thickens!

I loved those things, once, each and all of them, until they turned on me, like they all did, like they all do.
The honeymoon phase of any addictive behavior is such a swirl of pleasurable brain chemicals and renewed vigor for life that it is, for me, often impossible to turn away from. I’ve had it with so damn many things I know it by heart, that new-relationship energy of a fresh compulsion. Bourbon, heroin, razor blades, credit cards, dangerous sex, face punching, cash, whiskey, bondage, check fraud, vodka, shoplifting, ketamine, methadone, red wine, cigarettes, work, nicotine gum, croissant binges, wintergreen Skoal. Turning tricks, stealing cash, smoking weed, throwing up, watching porn, eating, starving, trespassing, beating men up. There are so many things that have, for a short while, salved my discomforts and offered me peace and pleasure. I loved those things, once, each and all of them, until they turned on me, like they all did, like they all do. This, of course, is the nature of compulsion. The substance of the habit becomes almost immaterial after so many years of trying to stuff things into the gaping void of spiritual discontent.

finished the nevers 1-b!
aughhhhhhh, i wish they hadn’t so confidently ended as if a second season was going to happen! WHYYYYYYYY! WHY COULDN’T IT JUST END WITH AMALIA AND PENANCE BEING SCHMOOPY? frustrationnnnnnnn! (although i get that there’s no way they could’ve predicted the show would get THIS screwed back when they were still in production. you gotta try to swing for a renewal when you’re on hbo!)
i got SO attached to frank and hugo and i am pissed that hugo died. noooooooooooo! let them be happyyyyyy! i hate thissssssssss!!!!!!!!!!! hasn’t this show heard that we don’t bury our gays anymore??????? (I get that maybe james norton wanted out because he works so much, but shhhhhhh.) maybe i just immediately need to start writing a fic about someone rolling up on the scene whose new turn is bringing your recently dead boyfriend back to life. or maybe the galanthi seeds ship frank and hugo too, and one somehow falls on hugo and magics him back to life. yep. that’s where i’m at right now. MUNDI CAN’T HAVE BOTH HIS LOVES DYING TO BOOKEND THE SERIES! I REFUSE! I REFUSE TO HAVE HIS LIFE BE THAT SAD. also, foppish aristocrat + grizzled copper wound up being a really excellent shippy dynamic that i don’t think would have occurred to me! update: it’s possible i wrote my fix-it fic already. I HAD TO! FOR MY OWN PEACE OF MIND, & PEACE OF FEELS!
i really, really liked the twist of auggie going bad. the stammering, hapless, charming englishman trope feels like such a staple of whedon’s work (and just such a staple in stories in general), and i loved seeing it turned on its head. i especially liked the way that the penance/auggie dynamic sort of felt like a fred/wesley remix but through a more critical lens, and i like how it was starting to feel like an amalia/penance/auggie love triangle was starting to happen. but ugh, i reallyyyyyyyy wish we hadn’t ended the series on that hug. D:
kinda relatedly: you KNOW i was like, “horatio gravitating back toward his awesome wife and auggie being evil and amalia being bisexual means the narrative was totally setting up canon amalia/penance!” and now nobody can tell me any different, damn it.
all of the maladie/sarah stuff was riveting and so magnificently acted! loved her journey.
olivia goddess williams remains my favorite, even when she’s shooting an innocent space creature over and over.
amalia and her two past selves hanging out was excellently trippy!
i really liked the direction the show took in these episodes, i would have liked to see more of it. (but it would have required the magic resurrection of hugo swann, so maybe this is all for the best.) weary sigh! i really love all these characters and would have loved to watch them for much longer.
i still say reed diamond should’ve showed up as lavinia’s evil american boyfriend. sorry, denis o’hare!!!!!!
